GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee did more than just give a speech at the North Carolina Republican Party convention. He also may have saved a life.

State GOP spokesman Brent Woodcox says the former Arkansas governor did the Heimlich maneuver on Robert Pittenger, the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor, at a lunch before Huckabee gave his speech Saturday.

Woodcox says Pittenger was walking by the front table of the lunch greeting people when he began to choke.

Woodcox says Huckabee jumped up to help Pittenger, who was able to walk away after the incident without medical assistance.

Phone messages left for Huckabee and Pittenger on Saturday were not immediately returned.

Way to go Huckabee!

As a Physician, I recommend that everyone take a course in First Aid and familiarize themselves with CPR.

Fast thinking on your part!

Hopefully, he can save McCain. LOL

Tom in CA   June 7th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

Well isn't that the right thing to do - save a fellow human's life.

Tom

PS I made 3 comments on "Minnesota Democratic Party endorses Al Franken" and CNN put up two. The first comment was the one with the most relivance - the other two were additional comments and CNN put up the last two.

CNN you do not believe in the 1st Amendment. You're commentaor sucks.

Donn Hudson   June 7th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

Typical. While the also-ran in the Democratic party is bathing in the glory of being treated like royality by the liberal main stream media, the Republican runner-up is out there saving lives. Poetic doesn't even begin to explain these actions. Of course, Hillary has "people" to take care of little problems like Huckabee took care of himself today. She doesn't like to get her hands dirty you know. Barack of course would have just laid his hands on the victim and healed him on the spot.

Way to go Huck… seriously. Way to go…

(see we CAN speak to each other without disdain)

final note.. this is the first time i have been allowed to post here all day, so I am going for it in relation to today's political events…

Senator Clinton,
I do thank you for your tenacious campaign. During the 90's and beyond, I had always been a staunch defender of all things Clinton. I did identify with Senator Obama during 'this' campaign. HOWEVER, I will credit YOU for making Senator Obama a stronger more vibrant candidate. I will credit YOU for preparing him to be successful against the forthcoming Republican smear machine. Senator Obama and his supporters always 'thought' he was ready. YOU MADE HIM PROVE IT TO HIMSELF, TO US, TO THIS NATION, AND TO THE WORLD.

Thank you for yesterday. Thank you for TODAY. Thank you for the tomorrows you have made brighter for all Americans, women in general, and my own daughter, in particular.

Senator, best wishes to yourself, former President Clinton, and your beautiful daughter with the brightest future imaginable, Chelsea.

Respectfully,

******, a.k.k. Biff Biffington

Michael   June 7th, 2008 8:52 pm ET

I do not think that lol is the right response to someone saving a life, having been a medic for a number of years I take great exception to that. You know it is a very sad day in this country and says a lot about its people when we cannot simply give thanks to Governor Huckabee for stepping up in an emergency and taking the time to learn life saving techniques. Go work in an ER or on an ambulance then come back and tell me you can laugh about saving lives, it is unbelievable to see such hubris.

Something inside me thinks it was either a premature move on his part or the whole thing was a set up. Mr. Pittenger probably would have been fine without it, but it was a great chance for Ole' Huck to look good and steal a little limelight. I don't trust a thing this two-faced politician-extraordinaire says or does. Not after his acting debut in the primaries.

And I'm a medical student who actually HAS saved a man's life (in 2004) with the Heimlich in a nursing home. Most people who are choking don't need the Heimlich.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   June 7th, 2008 9:31 pm ET

We are choking on debt thanks to political leadership at the national level. Republicans have doubled the national debt in the last 8 years. They spend our money and my children's money to solve our problems. The cure is getting to be worse than the disease.

US $ 9,000,000,000,000 has been rammed down our throats by our national leaders. Another US $50,000,000,000,000 is owed to federal pensions, Medicare, and social security.

America needs the Heimlich to get rid of national politicians who are choking my children with debt.

Everyone knows these things are problems…. but the candidates refuse to talk about it.

HEY. Wake up. Step 1: Admit you have a problem.

Dirk Wigdoubt   June 7th, 2008 9:37 pm ET

Huckalberry is a likable clown. He saved a life- great for him… But his dopey joke about Obama hitting the floor after mistaking a noise for gunshots revealed Huck's real character… go back to the pulpit where you have a gullible and adoring audience Huckster!

He thinks on his feet and does the right thing. Sounds good to me. Maybe to McCain, too?

Andy   June 7th, 2008 9:58 pm ET

They save lives on Baywatch too. Pamela for VP! Huckabee is an idiot and only an idiot would choose him as VP. He needed more than a miracle to win the nomination. And a Heimlich maneuver won't be enough to get him the VP slot either. Although McCain does owe him for sabotaging Romney's win and taking away enough conservative votes to leave McCain the last man standing.

Get back to your book Huckabee. I can't wait for the laughs to come out of that one!

To those who care about the people in the war; they should never ever vote for Obama. He does not have the ability to get us out savely. Mccane might want us to stay in the war for 100 years, but he won't be able to do that because Hillary will take over in 4 years. However, if you vote for Obama, his impotence might cause us more lives for another 8 years. Definately NOobama. Also, my dream for universal health care is crashed today. YOu know what, Obama promised a lot, but he will never deliver. We can only hope hillary will save us in 4 years if not (in august) after the convention. I will support hillary all the way. I will never ever donate a single dollar to the DM party. I never would ahve thought i would become an independent and voted for a republician as I never could have thought the people in teh DM party and the media is so bias, manipulative and undemocratic. I guess everything thing has it's first time. I would cast the vote for Mccane for this time for the sake of the war, our soldiers in Iraq, and most importanly, Hillary. I will be here in four years. NEVER vote for OBAMA. IT only means troubles, racism, and sexism and dirty politics. Speaking of change??!!! I guess we changed into a darker period of manipulation with this democratic primary race, with the influence of Obama. Who said he is not a washinton old style politican? Maybe not, a regular politican; because he is more manipulative, and superifical relying on retorics and less potent. I guess his change means a change to the darker side.

Who has a 11 percent approval rating that is lower than the Presidents and what promises have the democrats delivered on since they took over. Do your homework on the economy, gas prices, housing market, oil,and stock market. I thought if they got power in the senate and house hope and change would be the rule of the day? Looks like things have really gone down hill since they took over except for the fact we are winning in iraq. Hope is not a method!

CJ in FL   June 7th, 2008 11:57 pm ET

I'm not sure how you can make a negative comment on a story about someone helping a person who was choking. But then I always underestimate the hatefulness of some in this country.

Clinton, no, wait, McCain Supporter   June 7th, 2008 11:58 pm ET

Who believes Barry really severed his ties with his 20+ year tenure friends? I expect we'll see Rev. Wright giving the eulogy on Inauguration Day, with Rezko picking up the tab for the State dinner.

Way To Go Mike!!!!!
What a guy!

Huckabee for Attorney General!

Awww

Mike in Mickleton   June 8th, 2008 12:18 am ET

Huckabee for VP! Who knows, maybe he could be saving john mccain's life on day……you never know!

Wesley Widlend   June 8th, 2008 12:20 am ET

Are there any Republicans who can swallow food without choking?

Andrew Corey   June 8th, 2008 12:23 am ET

Way to go Huck! Hope you become the VP! :)

lee   June 8th, 2008 12:23 am ET

Huck is a good man. Too bad he is a republican.
There is a mismatch between his character and the party he belongs to.

Sean for Obama   June 8th, 2008 12:24 am ET

Heimlich's, Obama/rifle jokes, this man will do anything for some spotlight. He's just a random type of guy.

John   June 8th, 2008 12:27 am ET

I can't beleave that Cnn new would report anything nice or good about anyone besides Obama. You can't fool us folks we know you have been unfairly ragging and trashing the Clinton's name for weeks. I time for all you haters and Obama name caller's to go back under your rocks the show over till fall. Watch out Mr. McCain your next on their little name trashing game.

Sandra   June 8th, 2008 12:28 am ET

To the medical student who is not a believer: You said that most people who are choking don't need the Heimlich. So! Then they don't get one. This person did and did.

I believe that the Heimlich maneuver has changed its name to the stomach thrust because Dr. Heimlich distanced himself from it a couple of years ago.

Mr. Huckabee certainly has presence of mind to be able to do something like that in such a distracting setting. Why would anyone think it's a publicity stunt when Huckabee is not running for office? It doesn't help the other person's publicity.

Ernest   June 8th, 2008 12:29 am ET

Mr. Huckabee, save your move for McCain because he will be choking come November.

Vince, Fayetteville, AR   June 8th, 2008 12:30 am ET

To I'm not a believer,

You're such a fool. Oh, you saved a life so Mike Huckabee can't? Is that what you're saying?

Wait a minute, you said Most people who are choking don't need the Heimlich"

So, then what you basically said was, it is possible that this person DID need the Heimlich or it at least helped him.

From Day 1 when Hillary was telling lies and became a "drama queen" to win votes, my daughter decided NEVER to listen to any of Hillary's talks. And guess what, I was proud that she did not listen to Hillary's belated speech on Saturday! I remain proud of this daughter of mine; she is a woman of integrity.

GOP Man   June 8th, 2008 12:35 am ET

Why did he start chocking?

Did he see Gov. Huckabee coming with a gun?

Bad jokes are hard to forget, no matter how much good you do…

I am fed up with my party. I am wondering how McCain will win with the Dems flying high on victory. We need to make up our minds if we want to lose now or lose later…

Raymond Duke   June 8th, 2008 12:37 am ET

Good for huckabee. He knows how to keep a good republican canidate going. What it proved is that huckabee made a decision , recognized the problem and put a solution in place and solved the problem. I wonder what Obama would have done, ask if there was a doctor in the house. Action not talk soves problems . anybody can talk a good game but can they perform under pressure. If the media would tell the truth that is why Obama lost to hillary in the debates. Even an untrained eye like mine could see the doubt in his face and then the stuttering and stumble words would begin. If the media had not insisted on hillary always going first he would never have been able to give an intelligent answer.

A Latte Lover, Seattle, WA   June 8th, 2008 12:40 am ET

Good job Huck. Maybe you can keep McSame from choking in November???

Kick Hillary to the Curb   June 8th, 2008 12:45 am ET

Is this true or is it publicity to get Huck out of his rut

Linda Rayborn   June 8th, 2008 12:54 am ET

I was at the luncheon and Governor Huckabee was truly amazing! He calmly stepped up and saved this gentleman from choking and then, just sat back down like he had done nothing special! On top of that, his speech was dynamite!!! The crowd was wild for him, gave him a standing ovation and just kept on clapping….. What a pumped up group!!! Was worth the 8 hours I drove to see him..would have gone twice as far!!! He did Senator McCain proud. Was such a fine spokesperson for McCain! It is clear NC (and SC) LIKES MIKE!! I talked to many people there and they ALL want Mike on the ticket with McCain. McCain/Huckabee'08…..priceless!!!!!

Alexa   June 8th, 2008 1:03 am ET

Love it! Helps someone and doesn't show off as others would of. He's a very decent man.

Christopher Huckabee   June 8th, 2008 1:04 am ET

Way to honor the Huckabee name. At one point I knew how I was related to Mike, but I have since forgotten. Either way, his policies scare the cr@p outta me, but his personality is absolutely wonderful. Glad he was there to help out.

Good work Mike!

khquinn   June 8th, 2008 1:15 am ET

Way to go Mike!
Huckabee is McCain's best choice for VP for so-o-o-o many reasons!

Mike,

I'm happy to see you still got it. Keep up the good work. I agree that everybody needs to know how to administer CPR, Heimlich, and other simple but effective life saving techniques. I bet the man you saved is glad you were paying attention to the instructor that day.

From one American to another. Good Job!
