Laura Bush addresses the press at the Presidential Palace in Kabul Sunday.

(CNN) – First Lady Laura Bush said Monday that as a veteran of the rigors of the campaign trail herself, she "admired Hillary's grit and strength."

"I know what it’s like to run those campaigns, to be the candidate and how very difficult it is both emotionally and physically,” Bush told ABC News. “It's a huge endurance, process of endurance, and so I'll have to say I have a lot of admiration for her endurance and strength."

"I know it's hard," Mrs. Bush said, "It's hard to do that and I think she did great."

Bush also defended Michelle Obama over a controversial comment that drew criticism from many conservative pundits – but offered caution for the wife of presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama.

Earlier this year, Michelle Obama told the crowd at a primary season campaign event that "for the first time in my adult life, I'm proud of my country." (WATCH what Michelle Obama said)

Later, she said her remarks had been misinterpreted, and that she had been referring to how proud she was that Americans were engaging in the political process as never before. (WATCH: Michelle Obama responds to her misinterpreted remarks.)

"I think she probably meant 'I'm more proud,'" said Laura Bush Monday, adding that "you have to be very careful in what you say" when you’re campaigning.

"That's one of the things you learn and that's one of the really difficult parts both of running for president, and for being the spouse of the president, and that is everything you say is looked and in many cases misconstrued."

wow, now she is in giving advices…….

Chris from NY   June 9th, 2008 11:39 am ET

What a lady Laura Bush is. I wish her husband is half the woman she is. Thanks for the tips.

No McCain   June 9th, 2008 11:40 am ET

Does it mean, she is a Democrat now?

Penelope   June 9th, 2008 11:40 am ET

Did we "misconstrue" her reply when asked if she would vote for Hillary? I think not.

Helen, NY   June 9th, 2008 11:40 am ET

I do not believe what Michelle Obama said. Also it is immaterial what she said because, Obama does not serve to be our president. He does not have resume while CNN tries to portray him as capable candidate. Media wants to blind all the American people. I wonder if CNN will publish this message. Vote John McCain.

Robert in Toronto,ON   June 9th, 2008 11:42 am ET

Notice how there is now advice for Cindy McCain? Maybe fo her to lay off the Botox injections…lol.

Mrs. Bush, advice Clinton on the following:

1. Keeping a SCORE CARD

Jean   June 9th, 2008 11:43 am ET

Until you live through the years of of history in the USA as a black American you can not comprehend the dept of these feelings. Mrs Bush have you ever lived as an Africian American woman????????
It is not the same I am sure!!!!!

Marie   June 9th, 2008 11:43 am ET

Maybe CNN Could actually post the accurate quote and include the full quote.

Laura Bush is Nice!

OUTSTANDING Speech HILLARY!!!

Just one thing : NO WE WON'T!!!

I will NOT unite with obama - he is NOT qualified to lead our country - BUT McCain is!

Nice words and advice First Lady. I wish your husband was as smart as you.

thanks but no thanks from the wife of the WORST PRESIDENT IN HISTORY!!!

although I agree that Hillary CLinton has done a GREAT job, and that Michelle Obama's words were soooo misrepresented!!

i still don't like the Bush policies!!!!

Laura Bush is a real lady. I have all wasy appreciated the kind a gentle sprit she has exhibit through out her husband adminstration.

much more gracious than her husband

Mary from Sarasota FL   June 9th, 2008 11:44 am ET

I believe in all the years Laura Bush has been First Lady we have heard more from her in the past few months.
Too bad. She never got a chance to practice this art of speaking she is referring to. Poor Laura. Dubbaya just couldn't let her out of her cage. If he had, maybe things would have been better for HIM as well.
Mary from Sarasota, FL

Sharon Snider   June 9th, 2008 11:45 am ET

Laura Bush: You have not been where Hillary has been. Michelle Obama you can advise, but Hillary is out of your league. You are the wife of the president, remember? Not the president. Which, by the way, Hillary probably should have remembered, too, when she claimed the Clinton presidency.

Hopefully Michelle has learned to watch her mouth in the future…

Proud of both   June 9th, 2008 11:45 am ET

I was also very pleased with how Hillary handled her suspension speech. She is a very admirable woman and did herself and women everywhere proud that day. I've been a little concerned that she didn't actually conceed, I'm not sure what that means in the long run, I guess she wants to keep one foot in the race so to speak, but it means her delegates stay with her instead of being released to Obama. Does that affect anything, I'm not sure?
I hope her supporters can muster the grace and strength of character she herself showed and rally behind the democratic nominee. He is a worthy man, just give him a chance to show you. I feel very proud of his dignified campaign and how he and his staffers refrained from dragging Hillary and Bill's baggage into the campaign. I'm sure McCain would not have been so kind in the General Election race.

Jeff   June 9th, 2008 11:46 am ET

Good for you, Laura, you're more of a Diplomat than your husband could ever dream of being. I'm surprised we didn't hear more from Laura over the last several years. I know she's a fairly active First Lady with her initiatives, but she actually seems like one of the smarter ones, and I think First Ladies should be more vocal and prevalent.

This is coming from an ardent Bush critic and Barack Obama supporter.

Paul   June 9th, 2008 11:46 am ET

Michelle Obama meant exactly what she said. BO means exactly what he says and does. To try and "undo" statements and actions to be politically expedient is slowly going to register with the American people and they will see through the vail of deception. As far as Hillary bringing supporters' votes to BO? Good luck. Not this Democrat and I know I am not alone. I would rather have another Republican as president than a liar and a hypocrite. I love America too much to risk her future on BO and his recently proud of America wife.

Sam   June 9th, 2008 11:46 am ET

Mrs. Bush, advice Clinton on the following:

1. Keeping a SCORE CARD

2. Not to manipulate the media with a story line.

3. Keep it real and know when to bow out by listening to experts.

4. To have a strategy and rules of the game.

5. Not to feel entittled and control the country and the whole campaign

6. Not about her and her family but about America and it's people which connects with Obama.

7. Aknowledge defeat and congratulate the winners and not look down on him.

I wish all the best to the Clintons!

Pepou   June 9th, 2008 11:47 am ET

I always thought that Laura Bush had the brains in the family. Too bad she was not running for President instead of her husvband.

Keith   June 9th, 2008 11:47 am ET

It's very gracious of the First Lady to recognize that Michelle Obama has had her comments miscontrued. Go Laura! Go Michelle! You're both wonderful!

CTP   June 9th, 2008 11:48 am ET

Why can't George be more like Laura? Oh well, I'm glad it's almost over!

Sharon from Dumfries Virginia   June 9th, 2008 11:49 am ET

Thank you Laura Bush for giving Michelle Obama that advise. You are a great first lady.

Ginny CA   June 9th, 2008 11:49 am ET

Oh, if only that were the only misstatement from Michelle. Unfortunately there have been so many, they now identify who she is. From those slips, we see her for what she is. I wish it were a prettier sight.

Me   June 9th, 2008 11:50 am ET

She actually seems like a good person, why on earth is she married to George?

Michael   June 9th, 2008 11:51 am ET

We do not need advice from you. What were doing Mrs Bush when your husband ran this country into the ground? I see Rove called you and told you to still try divide our party. Its not going to work this time, you lose.

HSNP   June 9th, 2008 11:51 am ET

Here's some advice for Mrs. Obama. Don't sell the house in Chicago. You'll probably still be living there after November.

I'm formerly for Clinton, now for McCain '08

Pol   June 9th, 2008 11:51 am ET

CNN, how long are you going to chew this snivel "for the first time…"?FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY ADULT LIFE gasoline will be $5 soon, however you together with Ms. Bush (who doesn't care) are continuing "for the first time", "proud..", "more proud"… Stop it, we are already fooled. Thank you.

Please Post:

How can you be a good Christian and vote for the GOP and McCain?

!. They do not care about there fellow man, they are not my brothers keeper.

2.They do not care about the environment, for example big oil companies say that global warming is not real. They are not Stuarts of the environment.

3. War is always there 1st option instead of trying to get along with other countries and trying to talk to them and encourage constructive dialog.

4. Greed is the must important thing to the GOP, they do not want to hear about caring for the sick and poor.

I cannot for the life of me; how any good Christen can vote for McCain and the GOP. I know the GOP are going to talk about the abortion issue. To me this issue is not for the government or for constitutional changes. This issue is for the educational system, churches and parents. That’s were you can put an end to the abortion problem not by big government telling you what to do with your body.

I AGREE with THIS   June 9th, 2008 11:52 am ET

Good thing this was a fair primary.

Good thing that no one ganged up to throttle and trash HRC.

Good thing I never saw Richardson TRASH both Clintons on national tv in the most hateful of ways, while preaching against negativism.

Good thing we had DEAN and Pelosi at the helm.

Good Thing Michelle Obama never said that she would not vote for HRC if Hillary was the party nominee.

Good thing millions did not witness the media rape of the BEST candidate just to punish the Clintons.

Now we will all UNITE.

Amit NYC   June 9th, 2008 11:52 am ET

So laura are you endorsing OBAMA

vic nashville,Tn   June 9th, 2008 11:53 am ET

Easy to say get over it I think people say get over it they never try in their life

I know how hard for Hillary

DNC worked on this math
Equation 1 They want to come out from Clinton brand
Equation 2 They don’t want lose the black votes
Solve these 2 equations with super delegates
This race was decided by Super delegates

That is fine with us but we decided to whom we have to vote
Who care the party now

Frosty   June 9th, 2008 11:54 am ET

She's the only thing lovely about the Bush presidency…either Bush by the way. haha

NoMcSame   June 9th, 2008 11:54 am ET

They will slander Mrs. Obama in any way they can. She is strong and will stand up to them I know. As a black woman she has had to learn how to do that from birth.
Obama will not stand by and let McSame send our kids off to die in Iraq. No Way. Nor will he allow McSame to give us four more years of Bush economics. No Way. Are you better off today than what you were eight years ago? if yes then vote McSame, if not then Obama is your man.
Those of you that are planning to vote for this war monger and really want to show your support for McSame JOIN THE ARMY. Many of you are no help anyway because you supported Hillary in MOUTH only but did not send her a dime to help her out. Don't hate on Obama because we supported him with our time and our MONEY. YOU LOST IT FOR HER. Our money was well spent.

????   June 9th, 2008 11:55 am ET

CNN are you really that much of a poor excuse for mainstream media? Will you ever quote Michelle correctly! You're getting as bad as Fox news. She said, "for the first time in my adult life, I'm REALLY proud of my country." Are you people actually journalists???? How are we ever going to believe that you're quoting your sources accurately when you can't even quote Michelle Obama correctly who's video was all over the news when this came out?

Former Democrat   June 9th, 2008 11:55 am ET

Baloney! Michelle Obama belonged to a racist church for 20 years, and she MEANT that she had never been proud of her country until Barack started winning votes. Michelle also wrote an ant-American thesis and has said that America is just a "mean country."

I love the way Barack is always "misunderstood" or "taken out of context" also just like his wife when they both say stupid or racist things.

Carolina girl   June 9th, 2008 11:55 am ET

Hillary's strength of character came through during her long, arduous campaign. I definitely applaud her, and hope she runs again in the future. We NEED such character traits in the White House, more than ever.

You go Laura Bush tell the GOP that they are going to lose this election.

Obama v McCain   June 9th, 2008 11:55 am ET

this is probably well-wished thoughts and I'm sure that there is no hidden agenda for speaking on these topics.. yet i cannot help but cringe when i think of this woman being married to what will go down in histrory as the most HATED Prez!.. my the courage it takes to keep your head held high in the face of approval ratings like her hubby. A man will come from the East and unite all nations. Rulers will bow before him and adore him.

Sounds familiar. Do you still doubt that Obama is the ONE.

my 2 cents   June 9th, 2008 11:56 am ET

'd give Obama a chance… but so MUCH rancor and vitriol from his camp. And so much arrogance and boastfulness from the great Obama himself.

MY moment of defection:
Early On the polls showed that the majority of supporters for HRC would gladly vote for Obama.

Then Obama used that as a weapon to divide the party. We went National and very arrogantly and presumptuously declared that HE could WIN back the HRC supporters… but not the other way around.

SEE? words DO matter. And How was that so? After all don't the issues and the values and ideals of the party matter to the Obama supporters? Besides, as I then blogged- Obama supporters have MORE to lose with a McCain win, then us older, more conservative HRC demographic. I was seldom posted and abusively attacked if I managed to sneak in a comment.

THAT WAS MY PERSONAL MOMENT OF DEFECTION FROM OBAMA.

Millions of other Democrats have THEIR moment.

Justin from New Mexico   June 9th, 2008 11:56 am ET

It makes sense that people who are campaigning non stop would have a slip of words or two. I think it is disgusting that watchdogs lean on every word, looking for such mistakes so they can pounce. When did it stop becoming about the issues? It is sick to think that Obama and his wife "aren't patriotic enough." Get over it people! Most people I know of aren't feeling patriotic right now. We are sick of the direction our country has chosen to go and since we can't seem to do anything about it yet, are we expected to sit and be proud about it? I love my country because of where we stood once, but no one can decide whether I feel patriotic or not. Maybe once we get a sensible person in the White House will I feel proud to be an American again. I can't wait to see how many of you will spin this comment.

Rasheeda   June 9th, 2008 11:56 am ET

DEAR CNN:

HOW ABOUT CORRECTING YOUR QUOTE BY ADDING IN THAT ADVERB, "REALLY", THAT YOU'VE LEFT OUT OF THIS ARTICLE. THE LEAST YOU CAN DO IS CHECK YOUR FACTS AND BE ACCURATE AS TO WHAT WAS SAID.

THANK YOU.

WOW Laura, you proved more generous in person than your husband.

Generation X   June 9th, 2008 11:56 am ET

McCain supporters (HRC supporters also)- I suggest watching Frontline on PBS which featured, "Bush's War" or you can watch it online. Next here is a quote from McCain back in 2004,"He is in effect deputy commander in chief," McCain said of Cheney, whom some Democratic critics contend is really calling the shots in the White House. "We are very fortunate the president relies on the counsel of this man," McCain added, praising Cheney's "resolve, experience, patriotism," and calling him "indispensable and very debonair." McBush for third term!

Joi   June 9th, 2008 11:57 am ET

Mrs. Bush should have given that same advice to her husband, Pres. Bush.

Tim in California   June 9th, 2008 11:57 am ET

Interesting that Ms. Bush is offering suggestions to others when she's married to probably the worst president the country has ever seen. One wonders why she never offered suggestions to her husband about being honest. There might be a 100,000 less dead around the world.
It must be difficult for a spouse to know that she's married to such a scroundrel…..and this didn't start when he was elected…he's been a ner' do well and reprobate his entire adult life.

Former Democrat   June 9th, 2008 11:57 am ET

Barack also originally claimed that Reverend Wright had been "taken out of context….."

Ramon   June 9th, 2008 11:57 am ET

It's not so much that Hillary didn't win; it's that I will never vote for Obama. He is too far to that left even for this life-long dem. When I saw how the "Rules" committee stole delegates from her, and how they all scammered to Obama despite that fact that she won more votes, it reminded me of 2000. I was soooo angry then that I said "we deserve what we get". Now we've done the same! Why am I voting for McCain over another Dem? Because the Dem party has a festering ulcer that they won't even attempt to heal.

Michelle   June 9th, 2008 11:57 am ET

MO also stated that she wouldn't vote for Hillary and would have to think about it.

It seems that MO was unwilling to support Hillary as the Democratic candidate but expects everyone else to blindly support Barack.

It won't happen.

By the way, Wolf, you need to hire a new copy editor. I have been reading several CNN entries, and I was stunned at the errors.

Former republican   June 9th, 2008 11:57 am ET

According to Hillary, Laura Bush has 8 years of presidential experience.

Henry Smith   June 9th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

I don't believe that's a correct quote of Ms. Obama's comment. I recall the phrase being "really proud," with "really" being an important and meaningful modifier. That is, her choice of words suggested to me that, although she may have been proud of her country throughout her life, she is now "really proud" because of the marked increase in the legel of participation in the political process.

Less, Austin Tx   June 9th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Behind every good man - stands a good woman? Well, there ya go. This woman has no place to talk or comment about anything.

From the beginning, this woman should have advised her destructive husband Bush, "you have to be very careful about what you do when you run this country". This woman should be explaining why she let her husband commit such ruinous acts.

Sabrina   June 9th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Well said Mrs. Bush, well said. Once again 'Michelle Obama's remark were intentionally miscontrued by republicans, and even more so now, mentioning and reminding people again what they almost forgot is not needed; when this should be the histroy reminding every one again of those remarks really serves no purpose.

As far as Mrs. Hillary Clinton is concerned, indeed she did an excellent performance all the way around, and it shows that she was not just a "First Lady' she is herself a well polished politician and a true leader. Her endoresement of 'Obama' speaks by itself as to how much she cares and how dedicated a democrat is she.

Thank you for valubale advise anyways!

I have always respected Laura Bush even though I DO NOT agree with the Presidents policies and loathe the thought of 4 more years of the same. And that is what we can expect if McCain is elected. I also agree that MIchelle Obama did not choose her words carefully….but I also challenge the ones who are bashing her to say that they have never in their lives misspoke. I can only imagine what it must be like to have every word you say scrutinized. I would likely be toast within a week if I had to answer for every word uttered. I definitely put my foot in my mouth from time to time…..as do the rest of you I daresay.

Rabid Shrillary Fan   June 9th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

I will not vote for Hussein Obama. He is an arrogant black man who has no business being president. I don't care what Hillary says about supporting him - she has to say that.

I am a bitter, middle-aged crone who is racist, fearful, and spiteful. I have placed all the blame for my failures on men and minorities. I am also a spiteful b**ch to other women, including my so-called friends, but I tout my support of feminism and sister-hood whenever possible.

I don't base any of my political choices on any actual issues or positions, just on my immediate emotional response to my subconcious fears - that is why I so strongly hate and oppose Obama. He is young, black, and male - everything that I am not, and everything that I fear.

Leave Michelle Obama alone. Her words were misconstrued and all "mature" Americans know it. If your not an african american woman, I guess it would be hard for you to understand, however, your maturity level, african american or not, would help you understand. Let her alone, we totally understood what she meant (I'm mature). Except for "Molly" who needs a reality check on maturity :)

I'm REALLY getting sick of the idiots playing off and misinterpetting Michelle's comments(notice how i said "really" there? ) thats what Michelle did and it does not imply that she was never before proud but that she was really proud..duh..also..you dont have to be black(and nappyheaded as one nice gentleman pointed out the other day) to feel disgust and not-so-proudness and speak up about it.. America is and has been gulty of turning a whole nation away from pride(and in yours hearts you know its true) so even if she did say it the way it is being contexted..(and she wasnt)so what..truth is truth. I HAVE NEVER BEEN PROUD OF MY COUNTRY UNTIL THIS ELECTION SEASON. Equation 1 They want to come out from Clinton brand
Equation 2 They don’t want lose the black votes
Solve these 2 equations with super delegates
This race was decided by Super delegates

That is fine with us but we decided to whom we have to vote
Who care the party now
***************************************88

How many delegates was obama short of before he worn the remaining 21 and how many Hillary was short of.

Hillary had no majority of elected delegates (1627) needed to win the nomination while Obama did when he went to celebrate in Iowa.

This race had been over for 3 months but Hillary decided to be in denial and she got what she wished for.

I wish her luck!

Brian, NJ   June 9th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

This is abolutely part of the GOP strategy to get Hillary voters to support McCain.

Please Hillary supporters, remember a vote for McCain, staying home (same as a vote for McCain) or writing in Hillary's name (same as a vote for McCain) will only lead to more conservative judges not only on the Supreme Court but lower Federal Courts (arguably a bigger deal), possible repeal of Roe v. Wade, and more troops to Iraq.

Elect a Dem as president, embrace the history of the first African-American President (how cool is that), and then she can run in 2012 (I bet there will be other women in the field as well since she blazed the trail).

I would have been just as upset if Obama lost as you all are, and would probably be saying I'd vote for McCain right now, but I would come around in the end. I hope you all will.

SC lady   June 9th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

I applaud Hillary for her long arduous campaign. She really rose to the occasion hanging in there. It requires great strength of character and commitment to do what Hillary did.

Bob, Hamilton   June 9th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

CNN, you better watch the way your overzealous journalists word their headlines. 'Laura Bush applauds Clinton, has advise for Michelle Obama', isnt the best caption judging from the full text. Divisive.

Secondly, your proffessional journalists seem to omit the most obvious-not the best form of Journalism and could potentially land your Network in Libel Suit.

WHERE IS THE word 'REALLY' in Michelle's remark? She said 'for the first time in my adult life, I'm REALLY Proud of my country'.

That word 'REALLY' makes a lot of difference in interpreting that statement. And your journalist knows that and thats why its more convenient for them to omit it.

Xavier, St. Louis, MO   June 9th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Don't Start Please...   June 9th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

To CNN…I sure hope that you will not become the new station that that's known for spewing distorted Republican talking points. I could have sworn that I saw and heard her say "I'm REALLY proud of my country." Operative word, "REALLY." If you're gonna quote someone you should do it responsibly and accurately. Get your stuff together please!

"Lay off my wife!!!", Obama '08

JJ   June 9th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Jean–knock off playing the race card. POTUS is the biggest game in town, and if Michelle Obama doesn't learn how to handle herself better in prime time and it costs her husband, it will have absolutely nothing to do with race. Obama himself said those kinds of arguments have no place in the campaign, yet you want to affirm Michelle's poorly worded speech just because of her race. You can't have it both ways…not everyone who doesn't vote for Obama is a racist. Perhaps a lot of McCain supporters simply think Obama isn't qualified. Have you considered that?

MD   June 9th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Michele Obama probably became very proud to be an American when Barack was elected to the Illinois legislature. She saw her salary jump from just over $100,000 to over $300,000.

That's change she can believe in.

Doris,Memphis,TN   June 9th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

Good advice from one first lady to the next first lady!

Dave G   June 9th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

I agree with Brian, NJ,
"This is abolutely part of the GOP strategy to get Hillary voters to support McCain."

To all who are considering voting for McCain, not voting, or writing in Hillary's name in November, please know that this will hurt Hillary Clinton. If she is perceived (rightly or wrongly) as dividing the party and losing the November election to McCain, then her power and influence as a Senator and future candidate will diminish.

At this point, the best thing we can do for Hillary is to do what she says and vote for Obama in November.

On the other hand, if you think another 8 years of war in Iraq would be a good thing, then go ahead and vote for McCain.

DEMS UNITE!!!   June 9th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

As much as I despise her husband, she seems pretty leverl headed for the most part and actually gave some good advice. At least there is a Bush in the white house with some brains, to bad it's the wrong Bush.

Okra Mouth   June 9th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

Hello Mrs. Bush,

Get a moving truck, and start packing out of the Whitehouse.
You and your husband are leaving behind a HUGE debt for our children.

It's my prayer that Obama will STOP giving tax breaks to the wealthy and businesses exporting our jobs overseas and hopeful balance the federal budget like Clinton did.

If McCain wins, and continue Bush's economic policies as he has said, then we are all dead !!!

Most polls show that a majority of Republicans say this country is on the right track and our economy is just OK….is that really true?
………………any republican around to tell me why?

Anyway, I'm an independent planning to vote AGAINST every Republican incumbent, from president, — senator — congressman–mayor, and even city council representatives.

well laura you are the worst first lady ever. You did absolutely nothing with your time as the first lady. You should be ashamed of yourself. You had the power to be a strong voice and did nothing. Even Tipper Gore was more involved when she was the wife of the VP.

Marlie   June 9th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

To Michele Obama. The question was, "Would you support Hillary Clinton, if she is the nominee?" and your response was, "I dont know, I will have to think about it." Well, guess what??? I have to think about it too and should I support your husband…Well **LL NO!! You are an idiot and I hope all of the Hillary supporters write her name on the ballot and DO NOT vote for you idiot husband.

HILLARY 2012!!!!

Indiana Voter   June 9th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

For everyone who is going to vote for McCain, you need to read the article regarding how he dumped his first wife after a major car accident that left her seriously debilitated. He married Cindy a month after he divorced Carol. Is that how you show respect for women? This speaks to his character which really hasn't changed much. Look at how he courted Hagee and Parsley and then dumped them and has changed his political stances to fit with whatever he thinks the American public wants to hear, particularly the right. What we do is the true test of our character so we need to focus more on what these candidates are actually doing and less on what they are saying.

Laura Bush is a lady, something Michelle Obama will have a hard time emulating. Hillary Clinton is a lady and a fighter. Sadly she has lost her chance because she would have made a great President. Too bad she had the media against her. Can't believe that the American people are really letting the media (and Oprah) pick their next President. This isn't a book club advisory!!!!

Less–you can knock it off, too. Painting the picture that everything is Laura's fault is ridiculous. Are you old enough to drive yet?

As for the pro choice crowd–that "they'll repeal Roe v. Wade" crap has been coming up since 1980, AND IT HASN'T HAPPENED YET! Frankly that a law enacted by activists judges (not their job) has remained intact all these years should comfort you. What would be so wrong if the 50 states could vote on it? What are you afraid of? That maybe just maybe more Americans think "choice" is synonymous with murder?

Luis   June 9th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

Stop blaming the Bush family. What about the Congress and Senate? Laura understands what Hillary has gone through. By the way, I now support McCain, my conscience and heart cannot support a candidate that had an affiliation with a church that was anti-American and anti-white. I am sorry Hillary! I supported you but I cannot support Obama. Patriotism is very important to me.

To the person who thinks Mrs. Bush should be faulted because she never lived as African American:

You're going to have ditch the "I am an AA, therefore I deserve your patience and support" line. If MO becomes the First Lady, she will have to represent the United State of America, not just AAs. How very unsophisticated to pack up all your personal baggage and bring it to White House. Keep saying things like that, and you will guarantee Obama's defeat. This is exactly what makes so many people hesitate to put him in that office.

You Michelle Obama haters are a little harsh. So what if she meant haven't always been proud to be an American. Lots of us have felt that way one time or another but that doesn't mean we're not patriotic and wouldn't stand up for our country if our country really needed us to.

Get over yourselves and stop blaming someone for saying the same thing you, yourself have not had the courage to say, at least once in your life, depending on your age. All of us gets fed up with the process from time to time and we're entitled to do just that.

Now, in Michelle's defense, I do believe she meant exactly what Mrs. Bush said.

DNC betrayed it's base and it will have sober wake up in November

We need Hillary back!
We won't vote for Obama!
We will vote for McCain with 100%.

Dear Fake Obama Supporters,

Please go away. Your act is old. True Obama supporters want unity within the party and a change in America. HRC is a needed part of that change even if she isnt going to be president. We want her as an ally. We know you are really either Republicans or Limbaugh Lemmings

PS Rush Limbaugh was an idiot before he got old. Now he's an old idiot and quite irrelevant. Stop listening to him. Informed Americans arent going to vote for McCain. Period.

Tell Hillary to obey the rules next time and not to think she is above them. This is America and the to be a president you have to be able to show that you can obey the rule and not try change them at the middle of the game when you fall short.

Hillary mislead 18 million people even when it was clear she was gonna loose.
Thank God she is out and will not mislead 309 Million Americans by not dealing with reality!

Obama 08   June 9th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

Michelle NEVER said she would not vote for HRC. Also you all need to wake up and realize not everybody is always proud of America. John Edwards was right about two different worlds. Just because I am not always proud of my country does not mean I am un american or un patrotic. I am not proud of this country from slavery, stealing land from the Indians(native americans) jim crow laws, how hurricane katrina was handled, the jena 6, sean bell, war in Iraq and the list goes on and on. So no everybody is NOT always proud of this country and every policy and law that was ever on the books. Michelle Obama rocks and will make a GREAT, Strong, educated 1st lady with a fierce sense of style..:-)

david   June 9th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

Hillary and Michelle are in separate leagues…

I have more sympathy for HRC because she was cast aside by one hundred or so superdelegates. That's not democratic in the least.

Michelle on the other hand is married to none other than Barak H, and her comments are inexcusable because they reflect the whole Obama package. That is to say, two outspoken personalities, surrounded by some bad friends and their loathesome beliefs about America.

I think Laura Bush always carry herself with respect & grace, very first lady like, unlike, her husband, is a disgrace to have a president like him. I always thought I could relate with Democrats beliefs, so I supported Hillary Clinton, but the way she has been treated by her own party & the media, specially CNN & MSNBC, If Obama does not pick her as his running mate. I will not vote on this year's Presidential election. Maybe I would consider voting for McCain.

Michelle   June 9th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

You people are pathetic! Me being a 36-year-old African American and voting for the FIRST TIME, I agree with Michelle Obama. I can NOW say I'm proud of this country and that we're able to see for the first time in history, that a black man can become president. Based on the way this country has treated black people, I COMPLETELY understand where she's coming from. If you haven't walked a mile in our shoes, then you have no right to say what Michelle really meant. I knew exactly what she meant and I agree!

NormK   June 9th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

Mrs. Bush is being much too generous and kind to Michelle Obama, but her advice is sound.

Mrs. Obama meant exactly what she said, “"for the first time in my adult life, I'm proud of my country." There is no way to misinterpret a crystal clear statement such as this. Sadly Mrs. Obama has shown that she has little love for America and is full of hate and anger.

Cheerio   June 9th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

Hey CNN, way to perpetuate the misinterpretation….

What Michelle actually said was "For the first time in my adult life, I'm REALLY proud of my country."

Please get the facts right before you publish a story.

vp not owed to Hillary   June 9th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

To Paul-Go ahead and vote then watch our Sons and Daughters sent to Iraq to return with life long problems, injured/ in a body bag then count all the money spent in Iraq .(A war Bush and Chen ey started for no reason just lies ) Then watch the mistreatment of these Veterans when they return remember McCain voted against education for them many of these young men and woman are high school graduates that deserve College education when they return.
Republicans keep harping the Democrats will raise taxes well what do you think you are paying for now for this uncalled for ungodly war ?Is paying for this war worth shouting from a mountain top ?

Laura is a good person. unfortunately married to the wrong guy. I attended a dinner with her before and she is a great down to earth person. i truly believe she meant what she said, so nasty comments are not needed. you can vote for McCain or Obama, it really does not matter since this what democracy is all about. what democracy is not about is to be so bitter that you are willing to vote against your believes just because your candidate did not make it. I am not defending Obama but my question is: what makes anyone of us so qualified to judge Obama's experience?? are we experienced enough ourselves to be qualified enough to say that some is experienced and someone is not??? since it is almost impossible to find a candidate with last job is President listed on his resume then we need to stop making this an excuse. Bill Clinton was around the same age of Obama when he first became a president and he did not have a president listed in his past experience. we all lived the good times of Bill Clinton and we all lived the hardship of GWB in which both of them were governors before becoming presidents. so to say that being a governor qualifies you to become a prsident is no longer an argument if you take a deep look at both Bill and George

Beware out there   June 9th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

Many of us have seen through the Obamas.

We are already tired of their hypocrisy and two-facedness.

ObamaSupporter   June 9th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

Every body have a feeling even Laura Bush our next president is going to be Obama. Thank you Mrs. Bush Michelle would use all the advice you can give her. I can not wait to hear what Sean Hannity , Karl Rove, and Bill O'Relley have to say now.

AMEN to Hillary……but the rules are the rules…..I have seen a lot team that are better…..but in the end there could only be one winner…..please do not elect McCain……I am an ex-soldier who do not want to go to war with IRAN……..

GWS   June 9th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

The 'Clinton Women' opting to vote for McCain are the prime example of why a woman should not be president … the 'if I don't get my way, I'll take my ball and place with the enemy' mentality shows that some women operate with their emotions, rather than with the brains!! I wonder if they would be reacting the same way if Sen. Obama was a white male - NOT!! Get a clue, ladies, there's more at stake than your hurt feelings - four more years of Bush!!

Roberto   June 9th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

Gee now that Obama is the Dem nominee, my question to all the staunch Republican bigots is, "Do you really want someone who gave the enemy (VietCong) military information while under interrogation to be president?"

Jackie Waldolrf   June 9th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

I am really tired of having this statement mischaracterized by CNN.
If CNN is going to put the comment in quotes, they should quote it accurately. Michelle Obama said (watch the tape). "For the first time in my adult life, I'm REALLY proud of my country." The insinuation that this is the first time in her life that Michelle is proud of her country is pure spin and either intended to discredit her or keep the argument that the Obamas are not patriotic going.

I would expect something like this from FOX but not from CNN

Behind every good man, there is a greater woman.

Thank you first lady!

Evidently, all of the educated people have stopped posting to the CNN Political Ticker Blogs.

It's obvious from the spelling and grammar mistakes in the blog that the majority of posters are either uneducated, or republicans.

I for one have stopped reading these comments as they are nothing but childish vitriol and fear mongering.

CNN Please do a better job of moderating. Stop the violence!

BARAKFORLIFE   June 9th, 2008 12:26 pm ET

Headlines stirring up more strife than a "little bit." Of WHAT value is her praise to Clinton? Her Admonishment of Michelle? That's what I thought…CNN you REALLY need to watch the tenor of your reporting. You have, oft times, gotten under my goat with some of your foolishness. Please, son't make me turn to MSN for my daily…

Republican for Obama   June 9th, 2008 12:26 pm ET

Of course all the people saying Obama doesn't have the experience to be President were horrified when Bill Clinton was elected, I am sure. Here comes Bill, governor of a small state with a poor economy and ranked 49th in the union for education. I lived there at the time and coming from NY it was like going through a time portal, blacks on this side of the street, whites on that side. Yet even as a Republican I can admit he motivated and energized the people to make changes and that is what Obama offers, good communication skills and motivation to make ourselves better.

Lastly Obama never says he will fix everything, he says WE will fix things and it will not be easy. The quote from Obama that really got me over to his side was "I'm not running to tell you what you want to hear, I'm running to tell you what you need to hear". As Americans we live out of our means and expect things instead of earning them (not everyone but on the whole). It is time someone came out and said, it will be tough, we've been lazy, let's get to work.

Capt. Smash, Salt Lake City, Utah…
You will NEVER get it!
It is not "your body" that is at issue.
It is murder of an unborn human being!
The Government has always had laws against murder.
The politically correct choose to think life does not begin at conception and they are WRONG!!
