WASHINGTON (CNN) – Illinois Sen. Barack Obama canceled his town hall in Iowa due to flooding in that state, his campaign announced Tuesday.

Obama was scheduled to speak to voters in Cedar Rapids Wednesday, but the Illinois senator’s campaign decided to cancel the event after a discussion with Iowa Governor Chet Culver's staff, saying they wanted all resources in the state to be focused on flood relief efforts.

Stay safe, people in Iowa! There'll be other opportunities for Obama to visit. He shouldn't be your focus right now.

Texas Independent   June 10th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

I still don't understand some of Sen Clinton's supporters hatred on this issue. The only people to blame for her loss is her campaign. She had the name, the money and the establishment to win this from day one. But somehow Mark Penn and his bunch had a bad (or no) strategy, ran her campaign into debt and allowed her to make comments that did not help.

Bosnia, the pregnant woman that died becasue she was denied medical treatment, Pres. Clinton reaction, holding her tax returns, the list is long. None of these helped and it her and her campaign's fault. I could understand if Sen Obama railroaded or swift-boated her, there could be some animosity but he remained fair to her throughout the campaign. Be mad and angry at her people for ruining her chance, and I bet they were paid quiet well for failing

Mike   June 10th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

To Ray Jay (4:52)

Perhaps you need to go "back" to school.

It is obvious that you are an Obama supporter (based on your inability to spell).

Oh, by the way, I'm a physician; buddy you couldn't even carry my lunch box!

Go Hillary!!!!!!!!!

Richard   June 10th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

Kathy, you are a fool, and an uninformed one at that.

michael   June 10th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

No one took Clinton"s nomination from her, she lost it. The reason the press got all over her was because she accused Obama of stuff she and her campaign were guilty of. She became negative first. She lied, she mislead. Are you forgetting Mark Penn. Are you forgetting "Shame on you"? Are you forgetting how she constantly attacked Obama, making fun of him saying"The skies will open Choirs will sing"? Every vote counts? Give me a break. Clinton could care less about the voter. When she started her campaign it was all about the delegates, then her story changed and you people bought into it hook line and sinker. Lets not even bring up sniper fire. But go ahead and vote for McCain and see what happens to your right to choose. Obama and Clinton agree on 99 percent of the issues but you are so pissed off because you think this was stolen from you. How democratic is it to have a primary with only candidate? A primary where that same candidate pledged she would not participate in. You Clinton supporters who are voting for McCain are brain washed. Vote for MCain, you get what you deserve.

anon   June 10th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

If some of you idiots took time to read the article you would have noticed this part as to why Obama canceled:

"but the Illinois senator’s campaign decided to cancel the event after a discussion with Iowa Governor Chet Culver's staff, saying they wanted all resources in the state to be focused on flood relief efforts."

If your comprehension is still limited. What that says is that the Gov. requested that it be canceled so that they can concentrate on the flood ravaged areas with their resources instead of using those resources on Obama's visit.

Belle   June 10th, 2008 6:47 pm ET

Actually, Hillary probably would have went to Ohio anyway to see how she could help. She showed up at Ground Zero the day after, and continued as a senator to fight for health insurance and the government to take care of those that go sick from working at Ground Zero.

Before you spew such nonsense, why don't you check the facts!

Farrell, Houston, Tx   June 10th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

You people amaze me. The Governor asked Obama to not come so that the state could focus all of its resources on helping its citizens instead of preparing for a huge rally…and you people trash Obama? That makes absolutely no sense at all.

No Pat- Iowa Bush did not go to New Orleans after Katrina, HE FLEW over it looking quite annoyed that he had to cut his Crawford vacation short. Weeks later he landed telling Brownie he was doing a good job. I guess you were one of the few who did not caucus for Obama in Iowa.

Tommy Hussein in St. Louis   June 10th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Brian Knoxville, TN June 10th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Obama's flowery rhetoric and empty slogans are getting old anyway. Its not like he was ever going to say anything of substance…

Go PUMA PAC

————————————————————————–

Brian, I went to the PUMA PAC website, and those people are PSYCHO.

-They think they speak for 18 million people, when it's probably closer to just 18, period – and most of them are probably Republicans.
-They actually think Obama will lose in "50-state landslide". Is that mental vomit even worth arguing against? Do they even live on the same planet as the rest of us?
-They think Obama stole the nomination, but they never provide evidence of that, because THERE IS NONE. Obama got 18 million plus votes, too, you know – and yes, more votes than Hillary. If you want to be ignorant and not count the caucus states and the fact that there do exist people in Michigan who support Obama, then it's your head in the sand, not mine.
-They practically writhe in pain at the thought of Hillary agreeing to be Obama's running mate – apparently they live in denial about the fact that she already said she would if Obama asked her.
-They complain endlessly about how bitter Obama supporters are, but they don't take a look in the mirror. Why should Obama supporters be bitter? It's the Hillary supporters' candidate who lost, not Obama's.

I try to be nice to people, but please…get over yourselves. Most rational, fair-minded, and intelligent people know blind hatred when they see it, and are not convinced by it.

Alex   June 10th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Having the dem. presumptive nominee takes a lot of logistics, effort and resources. If you guys had better reading comprehension (I don't expect it from many of you Obama bashers) you would see that Governor Culver had a discussion with Obama and decided it would be better if all the resources went to the very urgent flood relief efforts. This is in no way shape or form Obama dodging Iowa because of floods. It is like postponing a BBQ because your house needs to be sandbagged. Should the effort go to marinating, or saving your home?

PS to Pat: Bush is the worst president of all time, and Katrina was one of many catastrophic flubs in which there was no leadership. You should be so lucky to have Obama in office, even though you're too stupid or racist (not mutually exclusive) to vote for him.

Donna   June 10th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

Well the DECENT thing to do would be to cancel an appearance so that the city doesn't have to use their VALUABLE resources providing security, traffic detail, etc…anyone with SENSE should know that…ignorance is bliss and there are a LOT of HAPPY people posting today!!!

So what if he was going to say the same thing…he draws HUGE CROWDS and don't have to speak at bowling alleys with awful GREEN signs in the background like McCain…

GO OBAMA!!!!

Make these HATERS your MOTIVATORS!!!!!!!

Black Cat   June 10th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

MM   June 10th, 2008 6:14 pm ET

oh my gosh, there is a lot of venom out here tonight!
please read the article — it was at the request of the Governor's staff so that they could put their resources into helping the flood victims.
My prayers go out to the flood victims.

As for the venom — put your energies into civilly discussing the issues. You certainly don't win anyone over to your side (whatever that side may be) by spewing venom, by reacting without reading the whole story, by seeing conspiracies behind every statement.

R.I.F.   June 10th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

Hey Brian in TN,

I think everyone knows that you are a republican so you can comment but stop trying to prove to us that you are a democract. It's getting annoying because you are the first one to post on every single ticker. GET A LIFE!!!!

Ev-VA   June 10th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

Icannot believe some of you people, you will TRY to find fault in ANY and EVERYTHING Barack Obama does or does not do. If you had any common sense or common decency you can see these people in Iowa and the other flooded areas are in a disaster state and need to focus on getting their homes and lives on track. I applaud Barack Obama for not going to Iowa at this time to try and get support from the people who are trying to get their lives together.

I am certain in due time Obama will go to these areas an give them the needed support they need and get the support he needs as well.

Stop being so obtuse!

Obama 08!

Foreign Observer   June 10th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

These comments are odd — could you perhaps read the text? apparently, the governor asked him to cancel the event. Probably so all the cops, troopers, etc. can help the flood victims.

Daniel, WA   June 10th, 2008 6:06 pm ET

I think Obama should have gone there to Iowa more so becaus eof floods. He is frightened that his campaign will get washed away…..
Vote John McCain…

K of TX   June 10th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

Y'know, this just goes to show that the people who where never going to vote for Obama in the first place will always find something wrong with anything he does. They are so busy trying to find something wrong with him that they can't see what's right about his policies!

And to the McCain supporters posing as Democrats, you're pitiful. All of these divisive tactics you people use to keep this country divided wil soon come to an end. Why? Because history has shown that when a society is threatened with challenges of the magnitude that we are faced with today, people of every race, culture, economic bracket, gender and religion unite for the common good.

I'd personally like to thank George Bush for abusing the power of the White House and uniting this country against him and those who share his views!

csimp   June 10th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

To all of the Obama haters I have one question. If your home flooded and you lost all of your possessions, would you really want to hear anything someone running for president has to say? No you wouldn't, you would be more concerned about picking up the pieces of your home that was just destroyed. It's really sad to see people so full of hate and anger that they would take a states tragedy and pull something from it to criticize Obama for. Why don't you direct your energy to seeing what you can do from the outside to help those people on the inside who are at a loss.

What if?   June 10th, 2008 6:02 pm ET

by People at 6/7/2008 1:33:08 PM-PEOPLE OF NO IMPORTANCE….

Don't jump for joy to fast………All Dems. checked out what the Repubs really think of the democrats……………..

I love America to much to VOTE FOR MCAIN AND THE GOP!
I am a democrat and found this to be unacceptable for both candidates. Senator Dole said “Democrats had to choose between one candidate who said she’d obliterate Iran and another candidate who said he wants to invite Iranian leaders over for dinner and then maybe a chat after dinner with a good cigar—Cuban. I’d imagine. I don’t want EITHER of those two answering the White House telephone at 3 o’clock in the morning”. “We’re going to have to fight the ideal that this is a historic opportunity to elect Barack Obama” said Huckabee. “I salute how far he’s gone, but as far as I’m concerned, because of his views and what he would do —-he’s gone far enough for me this year”. But McCain camps says ——–McCain aide Michael Goldfarb wrote on the campaign's official blog that "there is a genuine affection for her here at McCain HQ“ "Sen. Clinton has really grown on us over here in Crystal City over the past few months," wrote Goldfarb, calling her an "impressive candidate" who "inspired a generation of women" but "fell victim to a vast left-wing conspiracy that resented her generally centrist foreign policy views."

FYI…So if Hillary would have won, this is the way it would have read…..We’re going to have to fight the ideal that this is a historic opportunity to elect Hillary Clinton.

Jasmyne   June 10th, 2008 5:27 pm ET

Pat in Iowa…it seems as though maybe you flunked out of grade school because you are obviously lacking the skills to comprehend what you are reading. The article clearly states that he did not go to Iowa because Iowa's own Governer said that he would rather the states resources go towards flood relief. Why don't you read the actual article and make sure that your little brain can understand what is being said before you comment. I swear this whole election season has really brought to light how STUPID some people really are.

Politically Speaking   June 10th, 2008 5:27 pm ET

Why don't people understand? Obama is not afraid or does not care about Iowan people. He canceled it because we people of Iowa can not go anywhere because our streets are flooded out. Ohio Governor Ted Strickland – who has often been mentioned as a possible vice presidential pick for presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama – said Tuesday that if asked, he would “absolutely not” join the party’s presidential ticket this fall.

Strickland, who backed Hillary Clinton during the primary season, told NPR’s Michele Norris that he was taking himself out of the running. “Absolutely not. If drafted I will not run, nominated I will not accept and if elected I will not serve,” he said, in an interview scheduled to air Tuesday night. “So, I don’t know how more crystal clear I can be.”

A Vote for Barrack Obama is a vote for Hillary Clinton because they support the same cause.
A vote for John McCain is a vote for a George Bush third terms more wars, bad economy and more country will not want to deal with our country. If you were really a true Hillary supporter that want a better America for this generation and the future generation you must vote Democratic this November. Please do yourself a good favor and vote for the Democratic nominee this coming November.
No hard feeling because Hillary has none against Barrack. We must put the Republican out of the white house.
As you can see, we are in a big recession and that will get worse with a John McCain.
I want to tell John McCain that gas tax holiday is not a solution for our energy problem and is not going to be a solution. This gas tax holiday shows that John McCain do not understand the economy. Keating 5 john McCain took money from the Keating five for political favor.

I wonder what will come out of the McCain camp. Will they show any restraint from turning this into an issue? Like McCain surveying the damage?

Spring Heat   June 10th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

My heart goes out to the people of Iowa…

However, Iowans are not missing anything but a speech full of pander…

Hey kids, how about some free college and you don't have to get health care cause college kids don't get sick…

How about fixing or funding no child left behind… How about real universal health care….

Obama has a govt program for everything. I'm just wondering where the money will come from…

Pat--Iowa   June 10th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Wow.

Bush went to New Orleans after Katrina, but Obama can't come to Iowa because a couple of rivers overflowed???

Obama is afraid to come to Iowa because of floods.

I guess he doesn't care about the people in Iowa.

How can you people seriously think this guy can lead?

Bush is a far better President than Obama will be.

Think about that one for awhile.

Brandon Hillary Democrat for Mc Cain   June 10th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Thats what we will see in November-
A flood of votes to Mc Cain from independents and Hillary Democrats.

Bradley Effect- Bitter Effect whatever you want to call it.

Kathy   June 10th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

He should have given it anyway—Ohio is not that far from ILL. The flood waters could have helped by sweeping him back to his roots—or are his roots, Kenya, or Indonesian, or Hawaii—whatever–anywhere but Washington DC.
Do wolves in sheeps clothing swim—something to ponder.

Brian Knoxville, TN   June 10th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Obama's flowery rhetoric and empty slogans are getting old anyway. Its not like he was ever going to say anything of substance…

Go PUMA PAC

Capt. Smash, Salt Lake City, Utah   June 10th, 2008 3:52 pm ET
