Senator says Obama VP search team discussed 20 names

Obama's VP search is under way.
Obama's VP search is under way.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Illinois Sen. Barack Obama’s vice presidential vetting team discussed roughly 20 names with a senior Senate Democrat Tuesday, including some well-known options and others that are “outside the box.”

Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota told CNN that some of those on the list are “top officials now,” others are “former lawmakers” and others are “former top military leaders.”

Conrad said Obama’s team wanted his impressions about the people on the list, including the respect they command and their “standing with their colleagues.” He termed their discussion “wide-ranging.”

Jim Johnson and Eric Holder, two members of Obama’s vice presidential vetting team, arrived on Capitol Hill Monday for several days of meetings with top Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Another Democratic senator, Dick Durbin of Illinois, a close Obama ally in the Senate, left the Capitol at noon on Tuesday saying he was headed off the Hill for a meeting with the search team.

  1. Anyone but Richardson

I am a Hillary-fan and I will vote for Obama in '08 regardless of the VP as long as it is NOT Bill Richardson!

Bill Richardson is the only VP choice that could make me deflect to John McCain or Ralph Nader.

    Anyone but Richardson!

Obama and al of his suporters make me want to vomit. As a supporter of Senatior Clinton, I can honestly say, it's no longer about Democrat v. Republican. It's all about defeating this snake oil slaesman in the fall. Obama will be a bigger disaster than G.W. Bush!!

To the HARD CORE Hillary supporters – You were going to vote for McCain if Hillary didn't get the Dem Presidential nod anyway. She didn't, so do what you gotta do. The rest of us want this country to move in a different direction, you know the OVER 18 million voters who did vote for Obama in the primaries. Now we're in GENERAL ELECTION MODE and it's not just about Hillary. It's about putting the best team together that works for the President and the Democratic Agenda and ALL the American people. Last time I checked there were 350 million of us.

Obama is too afraid to pick Clinton as VP. It might insure the party comes together and Clinton could bring Florida and Arkansas into play. More electorial votes than any of the other possible choices. The choice is so obvious but after all the horrible things the O mama parisites regurgitated, they would be embarrased to have to eat their ugly words. They will never admit that Clinton might be the best choice for VP. 75% of the country sees that Clinton would be the best choicet, but they are still haters that are still regurgitating the same hateful comments towards Clinton. .

Good luck President Obama, I hope you will pick the right person. I like the fact that you keep us inform of everything. I also hope that Hillary is not part of the list.

Hillary would be best for the Supreme Court. We need a woman, especially a Dem on the Court. We have three justices that will likely retire next year.

Colin Powell would be great but America isn't ready for THAT much change. Two brothers on the ticket is too much for some!

He needs someone with foreign policy and governing experience. Hillary couldn't bring that. His best choices are : Jim Webb, Joe Biden, Gov. Strickland, or Gov. Kaine.

For those who don't undeerstand why Caroline Kennedy is on his team-you need to learn more about her and you will see she wa a lot of knowledge and education in this area. For those of you who are holding Hillary hostage to the VP-has it ever mattered to you if SHE doesn't really want it? Do you think she wants a position that she is the subordinate in, or one where she is on her own and probably more powerful. Do you think Bill will past the vetting? Do you want her humiliated by him again? Can't you be proud of what she was accomplished or is it really about YOU? For those who will not do as she sked and vote for the demacractic nominee-you show her no respect. Remember this is HER party that SHE will be working with regardless of what position she has. A VOTE against Obama is a loss to HER as well.

Hey wouldn't this competition make for an interesting election:

    Obama-Clinton

    vs.

    McCain-Rice

    as in Condoleeza Rice?

You know what would be a really good idea. If he organized his future cabinet right now, so that we can see exactly who will be in his administration when we vote him in. All nominees should have to do that before the election.

I agree - anyone but Clinton.

And for the record - anyone that would vote for McCain because Clinton isn't the nominee is an idiot and was never actually a Democrat.

No REAL Democrat would vote for a man like John McCain.

No woman who values her personal freedom would vote for John McCain.

No man or woman who has an ounce of intelligence would risk four more years of Republican rule - our country teeters on the edge of disaster and we can blame men just like John McCain for it.

I know Hillary supporters want her on the ticket but forcing the issue is not an advisable way to get her hired. Seriously, if your company got a new CEO, would you badger him about his hiring decisions? Let Obama make his own decision.

I'm skeptical about it being Hillary. Her infant-minded supporters who vote like this is sports and not about issues have really left a bad taste in my mouth.

I feel sorry for her that she attracted such mental midgets.

But if she does get the VP - I'd still support them both the entire way because for me this is about health care, the economy, fuel, the environment, Iraq, Bin Laden (anyone remember him?)...
