Senator says Obama VP search team discussed 20 names

Obama's VP search is under way.
Obama's VP search is under way.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Illinois Sen. Barack Obama’s vice presidential vetting team discussed roughly 20 names with a senior Senate Democrat Tuesday, including some well-known options and others that are “outside the box.”

Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota told CNN that some of those on the list are “top officials now,” others are “former lawmakers” and others are “former top military leaders.”

Conrad said Obama’s team wanted his impressions about the people on the list, including the respect they command and their “standing with their colleagues.” He termed their discussion “wide-ranging.”

Jim Johnson and Eric Holder, two members of Obama’s vice presidential vetting team, arrived on Capitol Hill Monday for several days of meetings with top Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Another Democratic senator, Dick Durbin of Illinois, a close Obama ally in the Senate, left the Capitol at noon on Tuesday saying he was headed off the Hill for a meeting with the search team.

I like that he's keeping the public informed while maintaining discretion. I'm certain that he'll make the right choice.

We need a smart communist to raise gas taxes so I can't afford anything. Go Obama! Maybe he will find a Vice Pres who isn't "so far to the left that he has left America."

Jim Johnson has accepted dirty money from the Loan Housing Industry, read the article about him and the impact on Obama campaing. Also read article of Bill Cosby on Wall Street about Obama and how Bill thinks that Barack is influenced by his Church great article.

As a Hillary Supporter I will not vote for Obama he represents the values of the corrupted school of politics from Chicago. He is and opportunitistic politician and his positions are not consistent.

HIllary Supporters stay home, write HIllary's name on the ballot of vote for McCain. Obama is very different from HIllary. WE need a person that will go to the center to unite the country. Obama will go from the extreme right now to the extreme left.

  5. Other People

He gets other people involved because he does not have a clear thought in his own head. He lived off of Hillary's views and statements throught the entire Primary. Well, he better surround himself with a lot of intelligent people if he gets in the White House, because he will never ever be able to run this Country on Day 1 on his own – that is the one thing you can count on. Too bad for this Country if he gets to be President. All you young people who voted him in will see what an empty suit he really is – to bad for the rest of us.

Watch how Obama handles this. He and his campaign have been brilliant in their handeling of these things. The media does not understand it but the experts on air often over the Hill politicians or political operatives who are out of work except for their time on the various shows. So they can give all the advice they wish but we need to remember they are out of work.

No Clinton. She lost, its over. Be upset, feel badly, then get over it. If you're still mad in November, you need to find more things to do with yourself.

    Obama-Webb
Obama-Sebelius (sorry as a woman, she's who I would pick)

    Obama-Clinton = President McCain

Obama is doing the right thing. He should take his time. He needs to examine strategically how each candidate can help him in the general election. Will that VP candidate help him with foreign policy, economy, experience, voters, or help turn a state or region to vote for him. Also, he is going to look at how well he can work with that person should he become president. He is going to look at the negatives of each candidate. Does that VP candidate have anything in their background that is controversial that would be a distraction. For Clinton supporters that would like to see Hillary Clinton as his VP choice, biggest negative is going to be Bill Clinton. Obama's team is going to look at the domors and money going to Bill Clinton's foundation. Bill Clinton is going to have to be much more forthcoming about the money going to his foundation. Therefore, demanding to put Hillary on the ticket without Obama's team going through a process of examining the pros and cons of each candidate is not a smart way to proceed. Let the process play itself out so a good decision can be made. The same goes for McCain as well.

Another reason Obama is poised for a huge victory - his VP choices are much better than McCain's. Obama could pick Hillary and automatically pick up 18 million votes. He could pick up Strickland and pick up 20 electoral college votes in Ohio. He could pick Kaine, Webb, or Warner and win Virginia going away. What does McCain have? Romney, who nobody likes and couldn't even carry his home state? Crist, another hoary old man who would give McCain Florida and nothing else. Jindal, but why put a 36-year-old within a heartbeat of the presidency, and why pick an Indian who would turn off the ethnocentric base? I think his only choice is Huckabee given his problems with Evangelicals, but most voters see him as too goofy.

Another reason to vote McCain. He tries to act like he has to think about who the vp should be. It is a no-brainer that he should pick Hillary asap because his hesitation just makes Hillary's supporters more likely to vote for McCain.

I'd like to see Obama get someone who has some military experience to run with him. It's not necessary to have military experience to be president, but it would be beneficial to have some military savvy people around you. Obama is showing us he's willing to listen to people he trusts. That's why Hillary doesn't need to be his VP. How could he trust her? I'm confident he'll pick the right person. I hope he doesn't allow anyone to pressure him into choosing someone.

With the right choices for his White House cabinet team and VP Obama is capable and will win the biggest landslide in history.

I do hope he puts a unity team together taking the best talent from both parties and independents.

Clinton Supporters–please respect Obama's decision. It is his decision and his decision only. If you vote for McCain that is Pro-Life, who will put in ultra conservative Supreme Court Judges, pro-war, anti-Health Care because of "sexism" reasons or don't vote at all. You're an idiot.

    Funny stuff.

Former lawmakers = Georgia's Sam Nunn.

Top officials right now = Governors like Pennsylvania's Ed Rendell.

Former military officials = General Wesley Clarke...and probably only General Wesley Clarke.

Just say the names. We know most of them.

    No VP to Clintons!

Obama does not need to have 3-Cheney-like Clintons in his administration! And, the Clintons brand name will drive out voters to vote against the Clintons instead of for Obama!

Never, Never, Never vote for another Clinton!

Now WHY in the world isn't the press digging dipper into all these McSame's gaffes? If it was Obama, hell would be let lose! Doesn't this ring a bell? The whole YouTube is full of the dumb gaffes and stupidity communication displayed by the current Bush and they are not asking 'Could not McSame be same as Bush?'
And, WHY isnt the press digging deeper into the fact that McSame cannot give a single speech, they seem to have accepted the fact that he can only conduct small town-hall meetings?! For someone running for the highest job in the world! THE PRESIDENT OF THE USA! The press has settled for that. But the american people deserve to be heard! We deserve better! If it was Obama they would be asking all the questions into why he cant give a single speech!
