Senator says Obama VP search team discussed 20 names

Obama's VP search is under way.
Obama's VP search is under way.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Illinois Sen. Barack Obama’s vice presidential vetting team discussed roughly 20 names with a senior Senate Democrat Tuesday, including some well-known options and others that are “outside the box.”

Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota told CNN that some of those on the list are “top officials now,” others are “former lawmakers” and others are “former top military leaders.”

Conrad said Obama’s team wanted his impressions about the people on the list, including the respect they command and their “standing with their colleagues.” He termed their discussion “wide-ranging.”

Jim Johnson and Eric Holder, two members of Obama’s vice presidential vetting team, arrived on Capitol Hill Monday for several days of meetings with top Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Another Democratic senator, Dick Durbin of Illinois, a close Obama ally in the Senate, left the Capitol at noon on Tuesday saying he was headed off the Hill for a meeting with the search team.

I really like the idea of Wesley Clarke- he has a lot of military experience. I've seen him speak before and he is idealistic as well. Kathleen Sebelius would be good, but doesn't bring the national security experience. I really like Hillary, but I think she would make a better Supreme Court Justice or Senate Leader. John Edwards should be Attorney General.

What ever he does he should not pick Hillary. I want all those Hillary supporters to vote for McCain! What better way to insure he will lose then to pick second best when he could have had the real thing.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but calling me uneducated and racist won't keep me from voting for McCain.

    Hillary or McCain!

If he were really smart he'd talk Colin Powell into doing it... that'd win him the whole thing for sure.

I love it. The same group of individuals who slammed Hillary saying she didn't actually have experience (which isn't true) think that a NEWBIE like Obama should pick another NEWBIE like Caroline Kennedy as VP???????

Who is going to run the country??? God forbid – Michelle??? I'm moving to the BWI.

No far left radicals in the Whitehouse. Start to value your freedom already. Most of the people on the planet live under repressive regimes. The solution to Bush is not Obama. He is unexperienced and affiliated with dangerous ideologies. Just say no !!!

I say... put them all on the ticket.

Pile on the Bandwagon and drag the limping Obama to a win in Nov.

He needs all the help he can get- one to pull in each state-

Better make it '57'- one for each state.

Let face it, the older voters and the so called reagan democrats where not going to vote Obama anyway. We do need them but Obama is in the this race to start with because he has brought in a lot of younger voters.
If we have the turnout from independents and latino's Obama should be fine.
We do need to get those blue collar votes , that is where picking the right VP comes in. I will select wisely . Bottom line, we want someone Obama can work with once he gets there.
Trust me its like a Marriage, you don't want to be stuck with trouble for the rest of your term, so pick wisely.

    Go Dems.

How could Hillary be a VP after what they have said about one another. The Dems had this election to lose and they will most likely screw it up.
