From

WASHINGTON (CNN) – One of the most awkward developments for Bush administration and McCain campaign officials to defend is the appearance of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in Iran, embracing and kissing Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The Iranians are widely accused by U.S. military and civilian officials of helping to kill American troops in Iraq. The Iranian leader is widely accused of supporting a covert nuclear weapons program. He has been quoted calling for Israel to be removed from the map. So why is the top U.S. ally in Iraq kissing him?

The Administration’s defense is that the Iraqis need to work out a good, long-term relationship with their Iranian neighbors. High-level discussions between the Iraqi and Iranian leadership, they say, will help – not hurt – the overall security situation in Iraq.

The Democrats, including Barack Obama, make the point that Iranians have in fact been the big winner in the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Iran is a more influential player in the region now, especially since it no longer has to worry about its former Number One enemy, Saddam Hussein.

All this takes on a greater significance now that the U.S. and Iraqi governments are trying to negotiate what’s called a Status of Forces agreement in Iraq. That would spell out the terms for a prolonged U.S. military stay. The Iranians are telling the Iraqis that the U.S. must pull out. And some Iraqis agree.

“The Americans are making demands that would lead to the colonization of Iraq,” Sami al-Askari, a senior Iraqi politician close to the Prime Minister told The Washington Post. “If we can’t reach a fair agreement, many people think we should say ‘Goodbye, U.S. troops. We don’t need you here anymore.’”

What? Doesn't the world revolve around America any more?!

Tom   June 11th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Sampling the confused republican replies here just proves that ditto heads don't have a clue. They don't even realize the situation. One idiot even said this was "propaganda". So the Iraqi leader didn't really go and make nicey nice with the Iranian leader? Propaganda is when you make something up and spread it as truth (Tune in to Rush Limpnoodle for a perfect example of propaganda) No it's not propaganda, the Iraqi leader did go and talk to the Iranian leader after the Bush crew said it was a bad idea for any talks with Iran. That is the situation and yes it is awkward no matter how you look at it and no matter what side of the political fence you are on. Now they claim it can only help the cause in Iraq after telling Obama that it would hurt the situation. Well, which is it hurt or help? See how that is awkward.

Slash   June 11th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

*mock gasp* you mean, we have to have high-level discussions with key regional players in order to secure long-term peace in Iraq? But I thought that was naive Nazi-appeasement!

McCain, you've been proven wrong again. You can't expect to succeed in Iraq OR Iran without talking to everyone involved. And the junior senator from Illinois, who you claim as inexperienced, knew it before you did.

Go home, McCain. Go back to the Senate where you've been voting against women's rights and intelligent spending and sanity in general for your entire career.

It is simple John McSain – Bush would rather let another 4000 US servicemen die in a needless War on foreign soil.

Let them Die this would make McSan – Bush more love by the War base compainies.....

Barry IL   June 11th, 2008 6:49 pm ET

Wolf raised a formidable issue. President Bush tours Europe so that the Europeans collaborate with US to put pressure on Iran. On the other hand, Iraqi PM pays high level visit to Iran and receives best friend's welcome. At the same time, Iran is blamed as the number one problem for the instability in Iraq.
This proves that President Bush's strategy on Iraq-Iran relationship is a total failure. After all help and support he has from US, Iran's hand in Iraqi stability, how come Iraqi PM has this kind of warm relationship with Iran? This also hints the strength of Shiite-Shiite relationship across Iraq and Iran. Iraqi PM is a Shiite and hence, as per the region's friendship of trust, it flows for him to have a good relationship with Shiite Iran, whatever US may think.

Mike   June 11th, 2008 6:37 pm ET

McBush is sooo clueless. He keeps saying that American troops can stay in Iraq indefinitly like in South Korea and Germany. Well, first of all. America should have left these countries a long time ago, also iraq is not korea. we will be losing young soldiers in iraq for as long as we stay there. Arabs have a long standing fear that westerners want to occupy and colonize their lands. There will always be young Arabs who will travel to Iraq to fight our soldiers. Not because these young Arabs are terrorists but because they fear American/Christian occupation of Arab lands . Mc Bush is ignorant of all of this and will be the architect of a one hundred year war of occupation that will bankrupt America.

So now the media and Obama fans are going to do to McCain the same thing they did to Senator Clinton. Mince every word he says, magnify his mistakes, ridicule him, all the while building Obama up. I don't even know why we are bothering with an election in Nov. Just anoint Obama and be done with it.

H Arnold   June 11th, 2008 6:21 pm ET

It's quite simple......Iraq and Iran are neighbors and sooner or later and now are possibly friends.....As long as we are there, we are spending money and providing security that costs more money.....We are building the infrastructure also. Iraq is saving their money and charging extraordinary pricing for oil. And we have an administration and Senator McCain who wants to continue this same position. Spend, lose our service men's lives, build their infrastructure, let them charge any price for oil on any given day, and allow for more years of the same policy......

Justice League   June 11th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

Just to put things in perspective, how would you feel if there were 200, 000 Iranaian soldiers in Canada fighting Canadian Al Queda? You'd be pretty upset wouldn't you? So maybe you can understand why Iran doesn't want us in Iraq, 60 miles away from their border. We never had a right to be there, and we never will. So stop backing McCain, the Greatest American Zero.

I do not buy the Admimistration's Defence (Excuse). I think they have been bafooned by both Iraq and Iran Leaders. In fact both were likely meeting to celebrate their victory (pulling the wool over America's eyes and emptying the Feds' bank accounts)

If I am right, the Bush Government will be eating Crow until they begin ice skating in Hades! If it was ever proven that Trillions of US Dollars went into the Coffers of Iraq and Iran's State bank accounts compliments of Bush and Cheney's desire to make their mark on the world, I hope I'm not around to see the outcome errrr (demise).

Justin from West Haven, CT   June 11th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

Bob D   June 11th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

So, let me get this straight: John McCain doesn't think that a US President should meet with a leader like Ahmadinejad, but it is okay for a close ally to do so??? Would McCain countenance the British PM meeting with Ahmadinejad, while excoriating Obama for having expressed a view that he would meet with someone like Ahmadinejad without preconditions?? Seems a bit contradictory and hypocritical to me.

Perhaps someone in the media will see that McCain needs to be asked about that clearly contradictory stance.

Bush should have read the NIE that might have warned about the Iranians benefiting from the removal of Sadam. If there was no such NIE, then the intelligence community is seriously flawed.

As long as both Iran and Iraq Governments are from the same sect, there will be an unwritten bond between them, stronger than any "pact" with Iraqis the US can dream of.

Tradition is one of the aspects of the Middle East that NO American administration has ever understood.

Hopefully if Obama is elected, then he will appoint middle eastern experts (not Americans who claim to be experts on middle east) and give them a voice at the policy making sessions.

The American tax payers are paying the Sunnit Iraqi troops to defend their own country and Mccain has yet supported a plan to help home owners losing their homes. Mccain is out of touch with the needs of the American people. Mccain doesn't understand that the average working family wants to end the war in Iraq and start focusing on the future of our economy, healthcare plans, and the creation of more jobs. on either subject Mccain has nothing to say. Mccain will lose this presidency because he is doesn't understand the demand that American families have towards the increasing gas prices and college tuition and Obama does. We need a president thats not interested in supporting the well connected and wealthiest of Americans but the average joe too. That president is Barack Obama. Obama 09

We can never "win" in the middle east. They rightfully reject our premise that we get to control their politics. If they came here and invaded us, and then kept troops here, wouldn't we be pissed? Sure we would.

We all know that the past 5-6 years have been one big lie after another and that the only way out of this mess is to start using brains, honesty and diplomacy to improve our standing in the world and to have both sides of the story.

One other note... I am sick of hearing McSame's stale old argument that we are all "tax and spend" liberal democrats. From the state of our country and from what I see - they are all "tax and kill" republicans. This war has bankrupted our country and ruined our standing in the world.

Jeremy   June 11th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

For the record. . . Before the war liberals like myself said (1) there will be no WMD stockpiles found, (2) the aftermath will be a mess, (3) Iran will gain power and influence. Maybe instead of "liberal" being a dirty word folks should pay attention to what we have to say.

People make no sense   June 11th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

Nick – why should Mrs. Obama be proud of this racist country. While she was growing up I'm sure she saw her friends and family sprayed with hoses, dogs attacked, heard about the CIA bringing drugs to the inner city communities, giving black men syphillis, this all while getting a higher education. I'm sure she's been called the n word more times then you can write words. I'm sure she endured much hatred in her lifetime. I'm sure she had to read about what our government deemed as great hero's of American, while these same people had a hand in the lynching, raping, murder and genocide of her people. Then on top of that she is a woman and had to endure all the sexism from the men plus she had to work four times as hard as a man but received less pay. I know the perception is if you make money then you should be happy.

I know its hard to tell that people have a heart since George Bush and his gang are raping American citizens while going golfing and enjoying life, but some people have a heart and care about others. I for one am still not proud of America. We cosigned for the genocide of the Iraq people and barely blinked. Look at the Jena six travesty, and katrina. We as citizens allow our government to mistreat other citizens while clinging to guns and religion. Look how people hate immigrants but America was founded on immigrantion, remember the melting pot? Meanwhile businesses are profitting off of immigration and they are the reason why immigrants are coming to America but no hate is spewed towards them. Businesses send jobs overseas but Americans will spew racist comments about the foreigners receiving the jobs. How stupid!

Jack from California   June 11th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

One has to wonder what all those secret meetings at the White House between the Republican leadership and the Oil Executives were all about?

Start a war to drive up profits? Did short term profits displace middle income American security?

What a mess we have ourselves in and John McCain wants to continue down this path! I say NO to this policy – VOTE DEMOCRAT

Chris   June 11th, 2008 5:08 pm ET

Who cares? That's just a formal greeting. If our president, George W. or whoever else becomes president, met with him, would they not shake his hand? Keeping positive relations with neighbors is just as important as keepings positive relations at home. That's just diplomacy at work people. Why do we have to work so hard to spin every piece of news we see?

Am I the only one that actually reads ALL of the articles on CNN/News?

Didn't I just read an article the other day that said that the Government and the war had no influence on the gas prices?
If one of the "reasons" why the democrats think we went to war in Iraq was to get cheaper oil, wouldn't the gas prices go down???

Also, isn't this a cheap way for the liberal media to cut down President Bush and McCain? How is it that they have anything to do with this? Personally, I think that it is great that Iraq is now starting to think that they can handle their country on their own. This means that the plans that President Bush put into place are working right? How is this a bad thing?

Also, I would like to mention that on all of these comment boards 99.9% of the Obama/Hillary supporters trash talk ANY republican and say that anyone that is going to vote for McCain is stupid. They also write the SAME THING OVER AND OVER... McSame, McBush, that he is old, he doesn't know what he is talking about.... WHY?
It is because you know that Obama has no grounds, he is inexperienced and the democrats are scared that McCain will become President.
But if you notice... the Republicans actually put FACTS on the boards, they don't resort to PETTY name calling. Well what can I say… the uninformed democrats really do follow their uninformed “leader”!

WAKE UP AMERICA! The GOP wants you to think there is a divide between Democrats. That the word LIBERAL is a bad word. How many of you actual know what it means?

They claim that Barack has no experience, that his views change constantly yet look back 20 years his ideals are the same.

They claim he will destroy our economy or our military yet THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION HAS DONE WHAT EXACTLY?

They claim Barack can't be trusted to make good decisions.
They try and try and try to rule you by FEAR.
When you get out of line what do you hear?
TERRORIST THIS REMEMBER 9-11 THAT.

DO NOT DISRESPECT THE AMERICANS OF ALL CULTURES, COLORS, AND RELIGIONS THAT DIED ON THAT SAD DAY BY GIVING IN TO THIS FEAR.

We can make this world better through action in a positive manner, or be ruled by fear and ignorance. EDUCATE YOURSELVES and then make a decision based on the knowledge that you have gained. SEEK TRUTH. DON'T BELIEVE THE LIES.

When will some of these so called journalists actually report that Ahmadinejad has NO say in his country's military actions and his influence amongst the people and politically are waning? He has no say in what Iran's military will do when it comes to Ayatollah Khemeni who is the Supreme Leader and COMMANDER IN CHIEF of Iran who has the final say.

Dear American Voters,

Hon. Senator McCain and Obama, besides each having many attributes and characteristics. The critical differences between the two of these presidential presumptive nominees are as under:

1. Presidential "Temperament and Composer".
2. Little Washington "insider Versus outsider" experience.
3. "Vision and mission" for our nation future rather than past.
4. American policies, " first U.S.A Centric" than any other country [ ies ] centric.

In my professional opinion Senator Obama leads in all above qualities.

The need of our next movement and generation is a change. The Change in " past Washington and its Leadership". A change we can believe in and not the seductive, deceptive, and confusing slogan of "leader we can believe in" [? Effexor ?".

Our Greatgrand Nation has to address many present and future challenges and start with new clean "Slate and Senator".

God Bless America. its diverse people, and our Greatgrand Nation.

Our Greatgrand Nation is needs the CHANGE at every level and for long time.

I am sure Senator Obama with the help of Senator Clinton and her supporters, can deliver that CHANGE.

Please stay involved, stay engaged, and stay informed. Please do not allow any seduction, deception, and or confusion by some partisan media and leaders effect your vote [ Psychological Terrorism ]..

Yours truly,

DMAC in ID   June 11th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

Sure Iran wants to try to push Iraq to get us out of Iraq. Then they will walk in and take over that country and the Iraq people will be back where they were with insane Hussain. Then everything that our troops have fought and died for will be in vain and every thing we have spent will be like flushing all that ( lives and money) down the drain.

Continuing a war started on the basis of false facts and resulting in more lost American lives for a people who don't want the US on their soil and strengthens Iran only continues the Bush lies.

I am a very proud american with a very deep rooted sense of patriotism. My family has shed blood for this country in the Civil War, WW I took my great grand father, WW II, my grand-father and two of his brothers served, both brothers died, the korean war, my uncle Collier gave his life, Viet Nam...uncle David did 3 tours, I lost a cousin in desert storm, and I have another 2 in iraq now, there was a third but he is among the fallen 4,000. I myself recieved honorable discharge, (broken back in three places) from the army for my country. So when a fellow vet and pres. candidate tells me its not about a time for withdrawl, or winning is everything, dipomacy is out, and voes against better benifits for vets....my decision is clear. I will side with the young pup of a Senator which gives me hope and inspires the good in all he encounters than the same old lies.

Most people do not realize how out of touch Mc Cain is with his own inner warrior, for a real warrior realizes the ugly truth about war...."It's a bunch of old men lieing...and young men dieing." I want McCain to come here to Texas and tell me cousins little girl why her daddy isn't comeing back. And I want a substanative answer.

Why would people think that it is the same thing for us to meet with Iranian leaders as Iraqi leaders to meet with Iranian leaders?

Iran and Iraq have always had some sort of dialog if only due to their geographic locations. If Canada was taken over by a terrorist government, we'd probably have to meet with them. But that isn't to say we would meet with them without prior conditions. What is so difficult to understand about this? Iran is naturally going to try and get Iraq to ask us to leave. The weaker Iraq is (ie still is a state of upheaval) the more power Iran can exert over them. This isn't a surprise and doesn't indicate close ties between the two any more than your next door neighbor has to be your best friend.

Hey Pat in Cali – now are you going to try and credit Obama with suggesting renewable energy????? PUH-LEEZE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just like he thought up "YES WE CAN" (NOT). Blind lemmings following him off a cliff.

Where was this kind of scrutiny of the Iraq war and the policies back in 2003?
The biggest hypocrites are not among the politicians but in the media. CNN was second only to Foxnews in drumming up support for the war, telling us to be scared out of our witts, resulting in 80% support for the war by the public at its start because we 'had to' invade.

To those naive fools who think Obama is getting us out of Iraq: it's all rhetoric. Sure, he will get more troops out of Iraq than McCain will, but he himself doesn't mean to withdraw all troops either. There would still be tens of thousands of US soldiers in Iraq even after the "complete" withdrawal of troops by a president Obama.

Iran does play an important role but that does not mean Iran makes the call for immediate withdrawl. Sadam Hussein was removed by the invasion of Iraq by US forces and billion dollars spent. Iran has to make the effort to agree to an agreement offered by the US. Otherwise no deal. Iraq held accountable for the fallout between Iran and US. Simple!

I don't know if "awkward" is the right word to use here Wolf. I think maybe try the phrase "TOP RANKING AMERICAN OFFICIALS FEEL STUPID." I agree 100%. It is time for USA to bring our troops home, let Iraq and Iran do whatever I do not care. I want to know who gives Bush authority to even contemplate a "status of Forces Agreement"???? Why would he want to do that now, since he is leaving office. WHY? Because that is the type of divisive mind Bush and his adminstration have period and have had for past 8 years. He and his administration want to leave either Obama or McCain with their BIG FAT MESS and the main sufferers – THE AMERICAN PEOPLE once again. We need to STOP NOW THIS WAR, bring our troops home, begin to heal AMERICA and help AMERICANS who are struggling now because of this BUSH WAR, which has our citizens, including me, with homes on verge of being taken, can't afford gas or food, difficult to even get to work or to go out looking for work. So BUSH what is more important Iraq's future or your own country?????

I want someone to explain to me a citizen of USA how does Bush get authority to even propose this Agreement? Does the Congress have no responsibility at all or any voice or is Bush as usual, doing what "BUSH WANTS", negating the Constitution. As the president, BUSH has too too too much power – or does he my fellow Americans. We really need to investigate this issue NOW!

Hillary, you are an important Senator – where are you, why are you not questioning this Agreement, why are you not speaking up for us Americans????? Thought you cared so much about us!!!!!

Maybe McSame should ask Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki did he have PRE-CONDITIONS for embracing and kissing Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Maybe McSame would find out that those preconditions were that they BOTH agreed to s-c-r-e-w us Amercians and work together to accomplish that goal.

It seems WE are the last to know that we are the 3rd Wheel in the affair!

The Iraqis are beginning to realize that they can not live in isolation from their neighbors ... not even with a permanent American protection. And they also are realizing that engaging in diplomatic dialogue with other countries in that region will not only make them safer but it will also strengthen their economy. It is only the Iraqis who can safeguard the security of their country and its people. I Wish them well and hope they continue to diplomatically engage their neighbors.

Fred Flintstone   June 11th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Seems interesting how McCain wants to stay in Iraq for 100 years, yet you have the Prime Minister and people closes to him telling the U.S. that we don't want you in our country anymore. So, why then is McCain saying that we should stay for the defense of Iraq if they don't want us there? they obviously don't want us so bring the troops home and let them fend for themselves. Also, to all the people who can't get over the fact that Obama actually wants to TALK with PEOPLE and form new alliances. Why are people afraid of him talking to other countries in order to secure the U.S. or is this country gone down the pot and thinks because we think we have the bigger guns we should use them? In the famous words of Gandhi "an eye for an eye only makes the world blind."

Choke on that slappy

Ah, you don't actually expect McCain to comment on this do you? He's too busy whining about Johnson (when he's got some of the slimiest lobbyists RUNNING his campaign). Anyway...if he did comment, he'd just deny it or forget about it by tomorrow, so why bother.

McCain would make a worse president than Bush – and I didn't actually think that was possible. But every day McCain's "gaffes", "misstatements" alzheimers moments are making Bush look like a regular Einstein in comparison. This man is a danger to our country.

To a Voice from Iran:
Maybe because Iran is funding terrorism around the world.
Because Iran is supplying weapons to Hamas and Hezbollah.
Because Iran is planning a nuclear attack on Israel.
Because there is no freedom of speech or press in Iran and journalists are being jailed and torture.
Because mullahs are draining Iran of its national resources and betraying the Iranian nation for their own purpose.
Because 90% of the nation is against the government of Iran but are afraid for their lives to act.
Because human rights doesn’t mean nothing in Iran.
And much more than I don’t have time to write them all.

If Iran wasn’t such unstable and violent government they could have nuclear power but Iranian government can’t be trusted.

And I am talking from experience.

Peter   June 11th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

So how safer are you now? With your ally in fighting terror kissing your worst nightmare enemy. I do not understand that even after Bush losing 4000+ courageous men and sinking his country deep into debt he can still hope to be in Iraq indefinitely. What he did in effect build up Iran and now McCain wants to continue this type of war. I really do not understand what is there to gain for being in Iraq when even oil is at $135 dollars per barel. I think the next us president should just pull their troops back home and work on reducing tensions in middle east alongside other world powers which in turn would reduce price of oil. You have the chance in November better late than ever.

Since Iraq and Iran and not only talking but hugging and kissing each other, that sure makes a fool of out of touch McCain who is always bad mouthing Obama because he wants to have talks with other countries to have peace and McCain keeps saying NO NO NO, bad idea. So much for his bad idea, Iraq and Iran just proved McCain wrong on this thinking again. And McCain is suppose to be running on his military and foreign policies. It's not 1960 any more John Boy! You ways are out of date.

Proof Positive! McCain and Bush are the Same.

If Iraquis can kiss the face of Iran...can't we at least sit in the same room, we don't have to shake hands or kiss both cheeks but we can at least have a conversation.

The failure of this adminstration to at least do that is why Americans need to "turn the page" and open a new chapter in American diplomacy.

Ha, ha....America's chickens are coming home to roost. Even the countries that are our sworn enemies know they have to practice diplomacy by talking to each other. Senor Old and Deluded, doesn't think people should talk but rather should just fight. If he had served in the marines or the army and was actually on the ground doing the dirty work, then he would sing a different tune, but since he was in a airplane flying around and then got imprisoned almost the whole length of the Vietnam war, while others were out fighting, dying and losing limbs....its easy for him to say....I will never surrender defeat or retreat....even though he can't show how he is going to win! Obama is definitely the future for this country. GOD help us all if McBush is elected!

Um...here's a good question:

Why is this buried on the political ticker? Why isn't this a top story? Looks like the supposed "liberal media" must've dropped the ball, eh? Imagine that? How could an entity that is purportedly so "liberal" as the US news media (to include CNN) have missed an opportunity to point out the new Shi'a government in Iraq is getting all buddy-buddy with the Shi'a government of Iran? This is stunning...it almost makes me think that, God forbid, those conservative pundits have been lying all along, and the "liberal media" is a myth, just like Noam Chomsky said. Perish the thought!

Jeff in Illinois   June 11th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Nothing unusual about them kissing in public, holding hands, and hugging in friendship.

Arab leaders have been doing it for centuries–just before they cut their throats and steal their wealth.

For the poster that said he is more worried about Jim Johnson then Iran/Iraq – well this is why were are are in the state that we are in. And for the poster who asked about Cindy McCain – nobody hates her, there is nothing to hate. She is like a stepford wife, with that fake smile on plastered across her face.

I am afraid this over the top patriotism is going to bring this country down. We are so blinded by this that we can't see what is going on in the rest of the world. Quite frankly it scares that me that I as American born and raised can't say what i want about my country and my fellow citizens.

I was more afraid about Bush's foreign policy. And I was right.
I don't think Obama can make things any worse. The only way he could make it worse is if he continues Bush's policies.

In general, when one makes a mistake, no matter how large, the first step is to stop and reverse.

The Iraq war was a mistake, and we should stop and reverse. That's just fundamental common sense that every first-grader already knows.

Unfortunately, George Bush doesn't know (or doesn't care).

John McCain can't remember the difference between Sunnis and Shias. He can't remember what he said last week on tape about Hillary. He didn't know that we actually have more troops in Iraq since the surge started. He thinks it's "not important" when our troops come home. He jumps on Obama about talking to our enemy, but he hasn't said anything about when our allies do it.

We need a president who is extremely smart not one who constantly is wrong. We need someone who graduated magna cum laude and not someone who finished a miserable #894 out of 899 like McCain.

What it is time to do is let Iraq build itself. The US, thanks to Bush and his idiocy, has to stay and ensure that the infrastructure remains intact.

What Bush is doing by rebuilding that country to resemble the US is outrageous. McCain, by endorsing this failure, should be put in the nearest retirement home and left to continue his aging views of divide and conquer [the US citizens].

2. Wealthy... and ignore murder because the nice loopholes and tax advantages under a Republican party offer you a plush lifestyle

It amazes me how people can still be willing to go to war with Iran, it is very clear they do not see what this war with Iraq has cost us in blood and money. Everyone seems to forget that Russia has stated they would not tolerate any military action against Iran. If Bush and McCain have their way we will attack Iran and quite possibly end up in the big middle of World War III.

We should start building nuclear power plants and good quality powerful electric cars as soon as we can. Then we could say good by to the oil Iraq and Iran wants to sell. Imagine their level of power when their oil is not needed. Of course, we would have to find jobs for those in the oil industry, but we can do that. Let those folks live however they want as long as they don't attempt to harm U. S. citizens or property. If they do, take them out George S. Patton style.

REPUBLICAN Senator Dole said this “Democrats had to choose between one candidate who said she’d obliterate Iran and another candidate who said he wants to invite Iranian leaders over for dinner and then maybe a chat after dinner with a good cigar—Cuban. When there is a chance that Obama may become the president of the US, Nouri al-Maliki has no choice but to get friendly with Iranians.
Obama keeps threatening that he will put more pressure on the Iraqi government and pull the troops out.
That is why Nouri al-Maliki is trying to have plan s B incase of a troop withdraw.
A 2 year old can understand that and Obama doesn’t.

Unfortunately Democrats didn’t learn anything from the mistakes of Carter era and planning to repeat is all over again.

COMEON HILLARY SUPPORTERS AND LET US ALL WELCOME YOU TO THE TEAM CARRYING THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, JOHN MCCAIN!!!!!!!!!

He is trusted more by americans than Obama, and so is his wife.

I would like to discuss something that i dont understand. Why do Obama backers think Cindy Mccain is such a bad person?
Is it because they dont like John so they think they should be prejudice and just not like Cindy? I THINK SO!
She founded a non profit organization which: emergency medical care to disaster-struck or war-torn third-world areas, thats a GREAT thing SHE DID!
Did you know while in Bangladesh she met two infant girls she decided needed to be brought to the United States for medical treatment and She also decided to adopt one of the girls?
that is also soo NICE of them, yet Obama supporters are prejudice towards her, and she did nothing wrong, unlike Michelle Obama Claiming that "for the first time in her adult life she is proud of her country" thats pitiful.
Well like i said welcome Aboard!

BRING it on MICHELLE OBAMA!

It seems that maybe the policy of actually talking to your enemy has some merit after all!

I especially liked the point where President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the largest hurdle to securing peace and a lasting relationship was the presence of American troops. SOmething that has been said over and over by the international community. The major violence in Iraq is because we are there, if we had left, after they ahd established their own government the Iraq situation would have been taken care of by now. Our staying has increased the violence in Iraq and our leaving, once Mr. Obama is Presidnet, will make Iraq a much more stable and secure country. (Yes I am aware that there will be an initial surge in violence, and that Al-Queada will try to influence the country, but I am also aware that most Iraqis do NOT support Al-Queada and that they will do what they can to prevent the rise of Al-Queada. Contrary to the lies told by the bush administration not all Islamic people are radicals and only a small minority support the actions of such groups as Al-Queada, they do, however, support the right to make their own decisions about their own country something we in the West (and former USSR) have not allowed them to do for over 50 years. They do have some anger towards America, and rightfully so if you look at their history, but they also know that we are TRYING to change things and they do like most Americans, just not our government. but hey what do I know I have only spent 21 years in the military and been to Iraq during war time, of course I never got a "dog and pony show" like visiting VIPS but I did see things from a real perspective.

Cost of a Republican in office in 2009 = Four more years of the same.

Bob Indianapolis, IN   June 11th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Was there any tongue? McSame doesn't know a Sunni from a Shiite and won't be president anyway....

WILLIS, Texas   June 11th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

THIS SHOWS THAT MCCAN'T IS OUT OF TOUCH - IRAQ TALKS TO IRAN AND HE IS BEATING OBAMA OVER THE HEAD FOR WANTING TO TALK TO OUR ENEMIES.

LOOK OUT US THE NEW POWER HOUSE WILL BE CHINA AND THE US GETS DOWNGRADED TO THIRD WORLD STATUS WITH MCCAN'T!!!

OBAMA IS A VISIONARY AND IS THE ONLY ONE WHO RECOGNIZES THAT WE HAVE TO COMPETE ON A GLOBAL BASIS! THE WORLD DOES NOT STOP AT U.S. BORDERS 9ACCORDING TO MCCAN'T.

WE NEED TO MOVE THE OLD, SENILE, AND OUT OF TOUCH MCCAN'T OUT OF THE WAY AND LET A YOUNGER, SMARTER, FASTER MAN DO THE JOB!!!!!

mary, Dallas, Tx   June 11th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

This is crazy. We talk about war with Iran and protecting Iraq when it appears that the two are now uniting. McCain says that he does not know how long we will be there but the citizens want us gone. There life has not been made easier. Their towns are in ruins and civilians are injured and killed every day. It appears that we are the aggressors and it has nothing to do with democracy. It appears that our presence there is more about control.

May God protect our soldiers. When the people get tired of our presence, what will happen to the men and women in that country. You can't tell your friends from the enemy. It is time to bring boys home, alive.

Sarah   June 11th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Wolf, embracing and kissing is part of their culture... The awkward bit for the McBush is they are engaging in DIPLOMACY!

Illinois   June 11th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Well at some point I'm sure we'll see Obama kiss one of the high ranking Iranians. You know, we wouldn't want anyone to be mad at anybody or anything. I don't know why people are just now paying attention to the influence Iran has had on the Iraq war. It's been going on for years.

And in case people arenot paying attention, Obama is starting to pull away from getting out of Iraq. I agree that we need to get out of there, but wehave to do it carefully......which is what Clinton was always saying. Of course now that she's led the way...again....Obama is starting to come around to the "right" way of thinking. This guy is a Manchurian Candidate. He doesn't have an independent thought of his own.

tom   June 11th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

just goes to show ya all those trillions of dollars spent for a ridiculous war leads too...

way to go republican "tough talk" diplomacy.

republicans SUCK

Obama 08!

Michelle   June 11th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

wolf its just a well understood fact that Bush made terrorism 20 times worse with his failed Iraq policies and in doing so made Iran a stronger country in the process, but having said that its vitally important that the US take the path to diplomacy with Iran and not forge ahead with another mindset for more war!!
Its time for the US to stop being the BULLY on the block and occupying foreign countries where they have no business being!
Its not going to happen with MCCain at the helm but there is a chance with *Senator Obama* for the country to take a more peaceful
and prosperous route

Independent for Obama   June 11th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

High-placed Iraqi officials have already said that they want our troops out in the next year.

Also – to A voice from Iran – the reason people think Iran is evil or a threat is because:

(1) Ahmedinejad refuses to recognize Israel and insists that if Iran ever gets a nuclear bomb, Israel will no longer exist; and

(2) Ahmedinejad denies the Holocaust, denies the existence of gay people in Iranian and Middle Eastern society, and has a terrible human rights track record.

Teddy California   June 11th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

This is not big deal. It actually proves Iraq is an independent country and its leader is NOT a puppy of the U.S. Many of U.S. friends and allies do talk with Iranian leaders. McCain would be happy to talk about Iraq and Iran. The press does not have to talk about worsening economy, every rising oil prices, and sinking stock markets!

Capt. Smash, Salt Lake City, Utah   June 11th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

The biggest question I have for Bush, Channey and McCain is; why didn’t they just invade Iraq and treat them like the American Indians? You know just take there land and slaughter most of them. They could have put the rest of them on reservations and let them build casinos. We could have just took there oil and gave them a small share, that would have made more since. We you use to do that kind of stuff in this country.

Instead they just lied about WMD’S and we have to pay high gas prices with no end in sight; that is stupid. The sad thing is 4100 American solders are dead and we are paying more for gas! What the hell? There is something definitely wrong here.

Bush, McCain, GOP and CLINTON voted to send 4100 troops to there death and for what? That is the real story here!

1. Is Iran stronger or weaker since Bush/McCain’s invasions of Iraq?

2. Has Osama bin Laden been killed or captured since Bush/McCain’s invasion of Iraq?

3. Are we paying more for gas now or before Bush/McCain’s invasion of Iraq?

4. Is our economy better of now or before Bush/McCain’s invasion of Iraq?

5. Is the White Houses creditability better now or before Bush/McCain’s invasion of Iraq?

6. Is the budget deficit higher now or before Bush/McCain’s invasion of Iraq?

7. Is the Middle East more peaceful now or before Bush/McCain’s invasion of Iraq?

8. Do we have more American Solders dead or before Bush/McCain’s invasion of IRAQ?

I love America to much to vote for McCain and the Rethuglicans

Chris from San Antonio   June 11th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

RE: Voter June 11th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

Nice and slick. Just say the "problem for the Bush administration and the McCain campaign…" Linking them together as only CNN is willing to do. How about acting like journalists instead of radio talk show hosts?

It is a fact that both Bush and McCain have said Obama is irresponsible for wanting to talk to Iran. There is no bias in this from CNN.

ANGIE   June 11th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

well can we finally give obama some credit for once lets see mcain what do you have to say about this one look whos laughing now you old fool!!!

voter from CT   June 11th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

The republicans are clueless and pathetic, this war is one HUGE distraction and it's costing the economy and our taxpayer dollars and our children's future...this is a disgrace, I'm so disgusted and I can't believe there are still so many that are with Mccain, what a waste...what a mess...

Daniel from FL   June 11th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Interesting...

Wade   June 11th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

So whats this got to do with McCain? Wolf, stop playing Presidential politics. You report, we decide what it means.

Franky   June 11th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

You know what Wolf? Who cares!! All I'm gonna say that when I was told "Change" was possible, I believed them..........that's all I'm gonna say.

Chut Pata   June 11th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Okay, so our puppet government in Iraq can kiss the Iranian prez but our government can not negotiate with Iran? What kind of a policy is this Mr. McBush?

Mimi De La Cruz for OBAMA   June 11th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

HOW CAN ANYONE FORGET BUSH WALKING THROUGH

THE HALLS OF THE SAUDI PALACE, HOLDING HANDS WITH

THE SAUDI KING? ALL THESE BOYS ARE IN IT FOR THE MONEY.

WE ARE BEING SOLD RIGHT DOWN THE DRAIN.

Buddy   June 11th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

You can not trust Iran and you can not trust Barrack H. Obama.

Loretta from California   June 11th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Now do you see? even the Iraqi's say they don't need us anymore.

Read the writing on the wall It couldn't be more clear. Bring our brothers and sisters home.

Start packing troops.

Gary Chandler in Canada   June 11th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Here's a True and False quiz for ya'll.
The Iraq War will be a short one. T F
The Iraq War will be an inexpensive one. T F
It will be precise with minimum casualties. T F
It will lead to lower oil prices. T F
WMD's will be found. T F
It will lead to the capture of Saddam and Bin laden. T F
It will destroy the threat of Terrorism. T F
A heavily guarded, costly, guided tour of Iraq by McCain proved it was 'safe' to walk the streets. T F
The Iraq War weakened Elquida and Iran. T F
————————————————–
IT WILL BE a 'catastrophe' for Americans to withdraw. T F
————————————–

Chris   June 11th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

If Wolf knew anything about Middle East culture, he'd know that kissing is a natural greeting, much as it is in Europe. To play it off as some lovey-dovey warming up to Iran is foolish. In addition, the meeting was tense and cold, with Malaki warning the Iranians to stay out of Iraqi affairs.

A voice from Iran   June 11th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Why are Americans tryng to describe Iran as evil?

1) Because they are developing Nuclear Weapons?
Answer: if it is soo bad to have nuclear how comes US and its allies have it long before Iran ever tried to obtain it

2) Because Iran is helping Iraqis to fight against US?
Answer: What are US soldiers doing in Iraq at the first place. US puts over 200K soldiers fully armed in Iraq it is not bad but if Iran gives a small arm to someone there, it is bad?

Charlotte   June 11th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Isn't that what Obama wants to do?

rice, bryan   June 11th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

and the train just keeps backing up, and running the united states doesn't it. and just think the iraqis and trying to help us in defending their country. let's stay in for another 100 years!!!!!!!!!!!

Voter   June 11th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

Nice and slick. Just say the "problem for the Bush administration and the McCain campaign..." Linking them together as only CNN is willing to do. How about acting like journalists instead of radio talk show hosts?

I'm certainly not a Republican, but this is so tacky that those who are will only be re-enforced. Don't you have any confidence at all that the Democrats can win this thing fair and square???

Chris from San Antonio   June 11th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

So the Bush response is:
We won't talk to Iran, and it's irresponsible for Obama to talk to Iran, but by all means, Iraqi officials are SMART to talk to Iran.

This administration has less appeal than hemmoroids.

Susan   June 11th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

It's time to get out of Iraq. We are clearly worsening the situation. Obama and Clinton were right!

DJ, LA, CA   June 11th, 2008 3:50 pm ET

Duh...of course Iran benefited from the removal of Saddam. I mean what were they thinking? Errr...that's too much of a rhetorical question as they were only thinking about $ for Bush/Cheney constituents – in guaranteed long-term reconstruction projects w/ no oversight.

Now that the Sunni's have been disposed...the Shiites and their Iranian cousins are closer than ever and have much more political influence in the Iraqi government.

David Goldman for OBAMA   June 11th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

EVERYONE THAT CAN READ KNOWS THAT THE WAR IN IRAQ

MADE US WEAKER & IRAN STRONGER. THAT'S A FACT.

THE IRANIANS SPEND PENNIES FOR GAS. WE ARE ON OUR

WAY TO PAY $5.00 A GALLON IN A MONTH. 99% OF WHAT

COMES OUT OF MCMOULD, UNLESS HE HAS A BRAIN GLITCH,

IS A LIE. WE ARE IN BIGGER TROUBLE THAN MOST AMERICANS

CAN EVEN IMAGINE.

RuthieM   June 11th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

"The Democrats, including Barack Obama, make the point that Iranians have in fact been the big winner in..."

HA! And as usual Obama was correct. No, it's not 'the Democrats including Barack Obama', it's been Barack Obama who has been making the point that the Iranians have in fact been the big winner in the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Give the man some credit for once, huh. And Bush has been listening to Obama from a distance, from the sidelines as he did with the attack into the Afghanistan hill and rooted out some of the bad guys there not long ago. Obama has said this is where we need to be, that if there is intelligence that is where we should be, he would go. And Bush listened to him and he went!

Turnabout is Fair Play   June 11th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

OOPS! Gotcha McCain, what are you going to say about Obama wanting to sit down and talk to Iran's leader NOW? Yeah, that's what I thought. Time to watch you squirm, lie and claim that you never said all those things about Obama being naive to want to sit down with our enemies now..you'll look like the senile old fool that you are if you try.

Obama/Sebelius or Webb '08!

Greg, NY   June 11th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

So McCain is saying it would be bad for Obama to negotiate directly with Iran and here we have our key Iraqi ally not only negotiating directly, but kissing the guy...

I'm actually speechless.

Don   June 11th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

I am more concerned about Jim Johnson affiliation with Obama and the constant double speak. Lobbyists would not be part of this campaign yet u pick a friend to lobbyist to vet potential veeps. Followers take the cloth off your eyes.

Heather   June 11th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

....

Awkward?

Yeah, that's putting it mildly. I guess Malaki's a Nazi appeaser, as well?

Um. HOW'S ABOUT WE GET THE HECK OUT OF THERE???

charles   June 11th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

I am waiting for the day when the Iraq govt. tells the U.S. to get out and get out now!

Welcome Hillary Supporters   June 11th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

I'd like to welcome all the Hillary Clinton supporters to the republican party and thank you for coming to your senses and backing the best candidate, John McCain.

Together we can:

1) help reverse Roe v. Wade and make abortion illegal – let's stop the murder of unborn babies!

2) stop gays from getting married – let's get a constitutional amendment to stop gay marriage and let them know they are not normal!

3) keep fighting the good fight in Iraq for as long as it takes – remember 9/11 and what we are fighting for!

4) get ready to invade Iran – we know they are planning to nuke us – let's get them first! McCain will make sure we do!

Good to see democrats finally waking up and becoming more conservative!

Ostriches burying our heads in the sand   June 11th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

Hmmm...this should be interesting!!!

No HIllary and No McCain EVER   June 11th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

THE CLINTONS HAVE A HIT LIST

EVERYONE WATCH OUT. THEY ARE OUT TO GET EVERYONE WHO DIDN'T VOTE FOR THEM.

MCCAIN IS OLD AND SENILE AND HAS THE BEGINNINGS OF ALTEIMERS.

OH LOOK. A PERFECT REASON AS TO WHY WE NEED TO NUKE AND GO TO WAR WITH IRAN AND START WORLD WAR 3 AND 4

MCSAME

Donald, Canton NC   June 11th, 2008 3:44 pm ET

So its OK for Iraqi government officials, Prime Minister, to speak directly with the Iranian President, but not so for the US! Talk about hypocrisy!!!

Its time to tell the Iraqis that American troops are coming home - get your act together.
