The Obama campaign is attack McCain over his recent Iraq remarks.

(CNN) - Barack Obama's campaign seized on an interview Wednesday by presidential rival John McCain where he said the date when U.S. troops can begin to withdraw from Iraq is "not too important."

The Arizona senator made the comments on NBC's Today Show where he was asked if he had an estimate of when a withdrawal process may be possible.

"No, but that's not too important," McCain replied. "What’s important is the casualties in Iraq, Americans are in South Korea, Americans are in Japan, American troops are in Germany. That’s all fine. American casualties and the ability to withdraw; we will be able to withdraw."

In a conference call with reporters Wednesday, Obama surrogate and former presidential candidate John Kerry said McCain consistently confuses facts about the war and is "unbelievably out of touch."

"It is unbelievably out of touch and inconsistent with the needs of Americans and particularly the families of troops who are over there," the Massachusetts senator said. "To them it’s the most important thing in the world when they come home. It’s a policy for staying in Iraq."

Later when asked if calling McCain "confused" could be taken as a shot at the 71-year-old senator's age, Kerry said that suggestion was "unfair and ridiculous."

Meanwhile, McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said the Obama campaign is launching "a false attack."

“The Obama campaign is embarking on a false attack on John McCain to hide their own candidate’s willingness to disregard facts on the ground in pursuit of withdrawal no matter what the costs," he said.

"John McCain was asked if he had a ‘better estimate’ for a timeline for withdrawal," he also said. " As John McCain has always said, that is not as important as conditions on the ground and the recommendations of commanders in the field."

UPDATE: In a conference call Wednesday afternoon, McCain supporter Joe Lieberman said he's dissapointed with the Obama campaign attacks.

“This is exactly the kind of partisan political game the American people are sick and tired of," he said.

Hopefully all Americans can agree on one thing, impossible as that may seem. Everyone wants the war on terror and specifically the fighting in Iraq to end, being a proud Republican I know of no one who wants the war to contiue or who likes this war. However, the war on terror MUST end in victory and this includes Iraq. We are getting closer and closer to realizing this victory in Iraq, speficially having Iraq govern and manage it's own affiars without American involvement.

That is what Senator McCain is sayng in the article above, the date we eventually leave is not as important as leaving in victory

This guy is an idiot. I can't believe I once thought about voting for him in a previous election.
The Iraqi people don't want us there and the majority of the US people don't want us there. Considering we never should have entered Iraq in the first place, and should have concentrated on finding Bin Laden in Afghanistan, we need to withdraw NOW!
When are the Republicans ever going to get a clue that Iraq does not = 9/11? Although with all the enemies Bush has created for the Americans over there because of his foolishness and stupidity it could now unless the Democrats can put an end to it.

"That’s all fine. American casualties and the ability to withdraw; we will be able to withdraw."

If this is an accurate quote, does anyone have any idea what he is trying to say here? This is not the first time I have noticed that the words coming out of his mouth are almost unintelligible. Forget whether we agree or disagree with his ideas – sometimes it's just plain impossible to tell what the heck he's trying to say.

Like Bush, but at least when Bush slaughters the English language, it usually has comedic appeal – this is just mud.

Brian   June 11th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

History has shown us that there are two things people will fight doggedly for: their religion and their homeland. The militants in Iraq are fighting for one, the other, or both. Most American’s in Iraq are fighting for neither. The sooner we realize that, the sooner we can bring our troops home to safety. In my mind, a quick withdrawal saving thousands of American lives is the only way we win anything in this war.

Our troops and folks here are BOTH suffering!

erika morgan   June 11th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

Let there be no mistake:
Every dollar spent on an American to feed, house, employ, educate, medicate, transport, supply utilities, provide for a secure retirement; defend against injustices foreign or domestic, physically and legally, is a dollar spent building personal hope and is thus a dollar spent for a capitol gain. That means it will give back to the wealth of the nation.

Every dollar spent on the war machine is a dollar wasted, it is a pure loss like the plastic Christmas toy that breaks bringing tears almost before the smile. In fact it would be smarter to burn the cash because then it would not foment the fear, jealousy, pain and resentment the grandparents of terrorism.

Is America ready to be the adult? Or are we intending to continue the antics of a spoiled child turned bully, that have prevailed for the last 7 years.

The prosperity we enjoyed during the fifties and sixties were a direct result of the GI Bill, the FHA housing loans, the CCC and New Deal, and the Marshall plan that helped rebuild what the war destroyed abroad. Whenever the Republicans dominate the economy tanks and we fall into depression! just fact.

I am so upset with the DNC so I am definitely voting Republican in the fall; here are some Key reasons why I like John Mccain and why I think the 18 million Hillary supporters should switch and vote for Mccain also

McCain has a 0% pro-choice rating from NARAL and Planned Parenthood.
* He has vowed to appoint pro-life justices to the Supreme Court.
* McCain voted against reauthorizing the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) for five years.
* He voted against the restoration of the Fair Pay Act.
* McCain voted to suspend the Family and Medical Leave Act in 1993.
* He voted to shut down the Title X family-planning program, which provides millions of women with health care services ranging from birth control to breast cancer screenings.

I am so in love with this guy
gaush
he is so cute
This is definitely the change I can believe in.

The major difference between Korea, Japan and German is that there is no currently active combat zone in those areas. Iraq is currently considered by many to be an active combat zone. There are active duty troops there needing to go on missions to kill those that would kill us.

McCain is simply unreal. When I watch and listen to his listless comments, dead tone and hollow words I ask myself is this who we want to lead our country? Absolutely not! He is a very nice man and has served his country well but he is NOT presidential material. He sings the same song, relies on the same old tactics and wants us to believe he is a "change" agent. Get real folks! The same old, same old and the people of America have had enough. The margain of support for Obama over McCain is increasing each week and will continue to do so as the summer goes on. The republicans will lose big in November. Yes, republicans continue to trash talk Obama as they are simply afraid of running against Obama as it is a sure fire ingredient for failure on their part.

I have never once voted Republican in a national election, however I would have voted for John McCain . . . 8 years ago. The man I see now I don't recognize at all. I realize that this is his LAST chance at the presidency but it seems this John McCain will say and/or back anything to get elected. It saddens me that after what George Bush and Rove did to him in South Carolina (debatably worse than the Swift Boating of John Kerry) that he climbed right into bed with them to gain the Republican nomination. Then tops that off by pandering to the far right wing of the party all the while talking out of the other side of his mouth to try and gain favor from independants and HRC's upset constituency. This man, this John McCain, isn't even a shadow of the man who USE to stand up for his principles . . . now he doesn't seem to have any at all!!!!!!!!!

He basically said what he has been for weeks now. His main concern is casualties and its noble. So long as there are no more soldiers wounded or killed he sees no real need to leave quickly.

Those that want to stay say either:
A: Iraq is still a dangerous place that needs our help.
B: Iraq is rebuilding and doing well because we are there.

WIth those two arguments as a rationale we will never leave.

NOT TOO IMPORTANT??? What a Bush cultist. Those of you insist we will "win" the so-called war (that is, invasion and occupation) in Iraq shold define what a "win" is and decide what we really get for our 500 billion dollars and thousands of Americna lives.

And why, oh why, do so many fools believe military service makes one somehow more ready to be President? We have a civilian leader of the military, according to the Constitution, for a reason! "Sir, yes sir!"

Esther   June 11th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Did you guys hear the latest news about Bush's pathetic administration – FEMA gave away just this year about $85 million in goods that were meant for Katrina victims years ago?! It was costing over $1 million for storage per year and now another group wanted to use the warehouses – thats why they gave them away!!!

Vote for McSame and continue the pathetic Bush 3rd term, dumb voters as dumb as the person they voting for!

Admit it – a lot of factors were behind such stupidity by the Bushes – race, politics and sheer meaness...as evident in the McSame policies

'...those items never made it to people such as Debra Reed.
"An honest person like me didn't get nothing," said Reed, 54, who recently moved from a tent beneath a New Orleans bridge to a home with the help of Kegel's group. "I'm gonna turn, 'cause I'm gonna cry. I didn't get nothing. I fought to get my money, but they wouldn't give it to me. So I ended up going under the bridge" .'

There are still people (such as the one above (welcome Hillary Supporters) who have their fingers on the nuke button and Bush's mentality of lets go get them. They haven't learned anything from Iraq war, which was based on lies and looks like Bush is ready again to take us to another war, probably based on some more lies.

In Iraq there were the WMD which they knew were North, south, east and west of Baghdad (according to Rumsfeld)....but the truth IS they weren't.

Now its Iran today. What will be tomorrow? And for God's sake we should know that it is not easy to build nukes. Only 10 or so country that have it and most of them cannot deliver it far enough to reach USA. (Oh yes, there is one country that possibly has the capabilities but the world does not admit or even supervises it....Guess which one?)

We must ask our politicians to think about America first and not base our policies to appease another country. We, americans must think of us first but as long as we continue to base our foreign policies based on how it will effect one small country in the ME, we will have problems at home and elsewhere.

Lets get the trigger happy politicians out of washington.

Slash   June 11th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

I'm not saying McCain is senile. But he definitely is crazy if he thinks he's going to win, especially if this is the best he has.

Maybe the press should cover his pitiful stances on women's issues.

McCain opposed the Equal Pay Bill for Women, saying they "need education and training’ instead.

He crippled the Family and Medical Leave act in 1993.

In 2005, he voted against funding for programs to prevent unintended and teen pregnancies—and reduce abortions in the process.

In 2003, he voted against requiring health insurers to include birth control—and, again, prevent more abortions.

In his service as an Illinois legislator and a U.S. senator, Obama has earned a 100% rating from Planned Parenthood for voting in favor of sex education, counseling, and the right to choose. McCain? Lowest ranking senator at zero percent.

Vote Obama—he DOES have experience. And it's the right kind.

Teddy California   June 11th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

One more thing. If American casuality goes down to very low in Iraq, then Aemrican public will support staying in Iraq. Do you remember the American zero casualty war against Serbia? The U.S. almost bombed Serbia into stone age destroying Serbia's all kinds of infrastructure and killing thousands of Serbia people. But Americans sufferred zero casualty. What was the support level of that war? I bet over 80%.

If the American casualties go down in Iraq, then McCain will win the arguments. Obama should concentrate on economy, not Iraq war.

McCain's time has past. He let the Bush folks talk him out of running against Bush in 2000, so now he is too old to even think straight. This is too sad, because I was more inclined to vote for him back then. However, he now seems so out of touch, so stiff and so slow and just not someone who has the charisma to inspire the country. Maybe there should be an age limit for the presidency. I don't think anyone can argue that a 40-something year old mind is more agile than a 70-something year old mind. Look what happened to Reagan? He went into seclusion when he left the White House because he was already in the mid stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Americans must become smart enough to analyze everything...along with the issues at hand. McCain is McSame because at this point, he can only remember what is, not what should be.

Sabrina   June 11th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

Is McCain serious to say the date for the troop is not important. He has no idea what he is talking about. The press and McCain keep saying the causality for American soldier is less compared to four years or so ago. When I her such comment it makes me sad. What about the soldier and the family members who see their love die, wounded or going through trauma. Can someone consider does victim as one of those not important because the causality in the war is less. I don't care what happen in Iraq, losing one life is not worth fighting for in Iraq. As for McCain when I see him on TV he alway look angry and is his smile is has sad has his anger. II hope he will find a way to stop smiling and just speak. PlesaePost: YES I AM BITTER VERY BITTER!

Let’s talk about the economy and Bush/McCain and the GOP. The war in Iraq has done so much damage to our economy here in the US we have only begun to see the effects. If you think back to the before the McCain/Bush invasion of Iraq oil was trading around 25.00 a barrel. Now we are looking 150.00 a barrel before the end of summer.

Some of you say this has nothing to do with the war in Iraq; let’s play the blame game. Well let’s follow the money shall we? With any crime that has been committed you have to find motive. Who has benefited most from this war in Iraq?

A.Bush and Channey are two former oil executives and have friends in American Big Oil Companies; have they benefited?

B.Big equipment and supply companies (i.e.) Halliburton; have they benefited?

C.How about Iran, they more money now then they ever had; have they benefited?

D.Saudi Arabia Bush begs them to produce more oil; have they benefited?

E.Has Osama Bin Laden and Al Quida; have they received more money from the Saudi Arabians that secretly support them; have they benefited? Has he even been killed or captured? We found Hitler in a bunker are Bush/McCain and the GOP chicken s**t to go get this turd?

F.The military industrial complex; have they benefited?

I love America to much to VOTE FOR MCAIN AND THE GOP!

Maybe it's time for you peaceniks to consider what the American casualties would have been if we had waited until Saddam Hussein DID get WMD's. I'd rather make the mistake we did of moving too soon, than the worse mistake of waiting too late. One Iraqi nuke would have caused 10 times the casualties of the entire war to date.

Jesus dude! Someone, and preferably a friend, maybe Liberman, needs to tell him he is heading down the wrong path if he wants to win in November!

So now all the CNN bias against Hillary will be focused on McCain. CNN knows that if they only tell part of the story, it will be misconstrued and make McCain look foolish. When Obama does something particularly dumb, CNN gets busy white-washing it and making excuses, and then never mentions it again. CNN, before all of this, I was pretty well hooked on your station and wouldn't miss Chris Matthews or Olbermann for anything, but now I never go to you for news. I'm sort of old fashioned that way: I like my news without any bias from the news anchors and hosts. I like making up my own mind about the events of our nation and the world.

1) help reverse Roe v. Wade and make abortion illegal – let's stop the murder of unborn babies! You mean those babies that you don't
want to pay health care for? You love them until they are born
2) stop gays from getting married – let's get a constitutional amendment to stop gay marriage and let them know they are not normal! Normal according to whom? The Repubs that like little boys? This country has a few problems more pressing than two
people of the same sex who love each other.

3) keep fighting the good fight in Iraq for as long as it takes – remember 9/11 and what we are fighting for! and Iraq had what to do with 9/11? Please remind us

4) get ready to invade Iran – Right- are you enlisting? Our military is stretched to the breaking point now. This country is mortgaged to the hilt with the Chinese now. The Repugs are not even willing to pay the taxes to support the war we are in -they would rather saddle our children and grandchildren with debt

The definition of insane is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. That is John McCain

But I know what is lost – a lot of lives; husbands, wives, sons, daughters, mothers and fathers are gone, and Bush says he has no regrets starting a war.

Stand face-to-face with the families who have lost loved ones and say Not too important!!! Ice Cold Hearted-Brainless McCain – these are people, not toy soliders. McCain wouldn't be standing for too long.

All the more reason to keep fighting...to work together to:

1. Protect a woman's right to choose.

2. Fight for gay rights.

3. Realize that Iraq and Saddam Hussein had NOTHING to do with September 11 and END the U.S. occupation of Iraq.

4. Realize that Republicans and Democrats are the same in terms of war... that, given a REAL and CREDIBLE threat from Iran, any president, REPUBLICAN OR DEMOCRAT, will take us to war again.

MCcain is a war monger plain and simple!!!

The truth is John McCain has repeatedly voted against supporting veterans.

McCain Voted Against $19 Billion for Military Hospitals. In February 2006, McCain voted against an amendment that would have provided for at least $19 billion for military health facilities, paid for by eliminating tax cuts for the wealthiest earners.
*Senate Amendment 2735, Amendment failed.

McCain Voted Against Legislation to Provide $2.8 Billion For Medical Care for Veterans. McCain voted against a 2006 Democratic amendment that would have provided $2.8 billion to increase veterans’ medical care.
*Senate Amendment 149, Amendment failed.

McCain Voted Against Establishing $1 Billion Trust Fund to Provide Improvements to Military and Veterans’ Health Facilities. McCain voted against an Amendment to establish a $1 billion trust fund to provide improvements to health facilities that treat veterans and military personnel to lapse on December 31, 2006.
*Senate Amendment 2735

McCain voted Against Adding $1.5 billion to Veterans’ Medical Services in 2007 Budget by Closing Corporate Tax Loopholes. McCain voted against an Amendment offered by Democrats to increase medical services funding to veterans by $1.5 billion in 2007.
*Senate Amendment 3007

McCain Voted Against Mandatory Funding of $6.9 Billion in 2007 Budget and $104 Billion Over Five Years for Veterans' Health Care.
McCain voted against a Democratic amendment to provide a mandatory stream of funding of $6.9 billion in Fiscal Year 2007 and $104 billion over five years for veterans' health care.
Senate Amendment 3141

September 2007: McCain voted against the Webb amendment calling for adequate troop rest between deployments

bottom line he has done little or nothing for vets!!!!

Having survived the Vietnam war too I remember Nixon talking about peace with honor vs. what we got- piece of our !!! shot off while we were making a fast exit. Above All   June 11th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Compairing troops in Iraq with troops in South Korea, Germany, Japan, and other parts of the world is a bit off. First of all, troops can bring their families to most of all the other parts of the world, so no matter where they go, their still home and have all the necessary support structures like school for their kids and jobs or colleges for their wives/husbands. There's no bagdad american high school... Secondly, Iraq and Afghanistan are war zones, the rest of the countries he mentioned are not. Some might argue that South Korea is, but it's not, I know because I live here. Compairing casualties in war zones with casualties in our allies countries is not a legitimate argument... especially when the end of his little soundbite was about keeping troops out of harms way so they could come home with honor. The whole thing made no sense, he gave no strategy for Iraq and simply could have said, "no, I won't accept a timeline." One final note, all these politicians need to stop talking about our honor, It's ours, and nothing you say or do in the capitol will change it, so stop using it to manipulat public opinion. Give us the respect that you say we deserve and pay for my college.

L mckee   June 11th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

And by the way, the 10 to 1 Vet's for Mccain is ridiculous, maybe 10 to1 officers, but with the atmosphere of the military not to get politically involved or show your support publicly, soldiers have to walk a thin line and most just stay away from it unless they are around friends.

Besides, a few war correspondents have said off the record that many soldiers have told them PRIVATELY that they support Obama.

I am pretty sure they are ALOT more out there like the ones that told the war correspondent.

Teddy California   June 11th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

McCain's ideas are typically imperial! Do you really believe Germans, Japanese, Koreans welcome American troops stationed in their countries from their hearts? The U.S. is an empire, no doubt about it. But I believe most Americans, especially those in foreign affairs, support McCain's imperial ideas. After Iraq is stabilized and violence is done, of course, Iraqis want Americans to leave. But I think the U.S. will stay there because Iraw is in the center of middle East and it has the second largest oil reserve. When Moguls ruled middle East for a couple of hundred years, their center was also in Iraq. It is a golden opportunity for the U.S. to have a presence in that part of the world.

We should have an open disscussion of all these imperial things.

Julio   June 11th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

The comments made by a McCain supporter welcoming "all the Hillary Clinton supporters to the republican party" VERYCLEARLY demonstrates the very narrow, even fanatic views, (reverse Roe v. Wade – stop gays from getting married) and totally, even blithely ignore the serious problems that this country faces. If this were 1692, these same people would be killing cats and burning women at the stake. Their grandparents used the Bible to justify segregation and attacking blacks with dogs.
The Real Issues:
-American men and women have died by the thousands in an unjust and unnecessary war.
-An ignorant, possibly criminally deceitful administration has facilitated recruitment of thousands to the terrorist's banner.
-Oil Companies have piled up obscene profits, refused to invest a penny in refinery capacity, and raped the American consumer in the process.
-Utter failure in the Katrina calamity.
-Uncontrolled Lobbyist and Cronyism.
-Exposing CIA operatives

"He was asked if he had an estimate of when a withdrawal process may be possible." "No, but that's not too important," McCain replied.

Obviously, Mr. McWar-Monger isn't concerned about our troops coming home anytime soon ... but many of us Americans are concerned along with the children, spouses and parents of our valiant troops ... they did their job ... they won a military victory and there is nothing left for them to accomplish in Iraq ... thanks to Bush's and McCain's stupidity the problems facing Iraq are now for the Iraqi people to deal with on their own.

David Newport, OR   June 11th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

he is wrong...it isn't about casualties. If we have to maintain a force of say...150,000 and something happens that we need our military elsewhere...where will they come from? We cannot be invested like this in a country where we are not wanted. Of course...idiots would rather not look at the obvious...stay the course they scream.

L   June 11th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

Spokesman Tucker Bounds said Obama wants to pursue “withdrawal no matter what the costs” and stressed that McCain was only saying what he “has always said.” Bounds said McCain believes the timetable is not as important as the conditions on the ground, and that Obama’s campaign was trying to “twist and distort the truth. “

McCain has always said that as long as the deaths of American soldiers didnt increase again then he will listen to the Generals on the ground and will withdraw then, not in 60 days so the extremists can wait until then to wage their own war again on the innocent iraqi's.

The rest of the interview went on to say that even when wars were ended in Europe, Japan, Korea, Balkans, our troops still remained and are still there now.... Iraq is in more of a civil war now so the troops will be home under President McCain...

Liza   June 11th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

McCain has said in the past the we might stay in Iraq for 100 years. At least he is consistent on this one.

Obama '08 and 2012.

Disgusted   June 11th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

Typical CNN headline spin. McCain is right on this one. It's the casualties that matter. No one is jumping up and down demanding that we withdraw our troops from the 702 overseas bases in about 130 countries. So it's not about having troops stationed someplace it's about what is happening to them while they are there.

I guess most of Obama's supporters are too young to remember, but we have a historical example of cut-and-run policy already. Just look at what happened when the Russians gave up and pulled out of Afganistan. The Taliban took over and we ended up with 9/11.

Knowing what I know now, I don't think we should have invaded Iraq. But I told my son at the time that if Saddam didn't have WMDs then he could have averted the invasion by cooperating with the weapons inspectors. He wanted the world to believe he did have them and it worked. And before you Obamamanics jump out there with your "Obama opposed the war" postings, he was not in Congress and didn't have a vote. And based on his inability to press any button but "present" in the Illinois state house I would not count on his being one of the 23 that voted against using force in Iraq.

No one in the media did the work they should have done to vet the decision making process at the time even though there were plenty of signals (which they ignored) coming from plenty of "sources" that things were not adding up. We know that now. At the time, the Bush Administration was mobilized and labeled anyone who disagreed with them as unpatriotic which effectively silenced most of the opposition.

Hmmm, sounds a lot like what happened in the Democratic primary...only the label was "racist" and it was Obama's camp that was mobilized.

We are in Iraq now and we either finish what we started – the right way – or we risk creating another Afganistan or Syria. For Obama's campaign to call everyone who doesn't support their candidate "out of touch" without offering up a workable plan is yet another indication of what we can all expect if he is elected...which is darn little in the way of realistic action for the good of this country.

PS – I'm a registered independent who has never before voted Republican for president (I detested Regan) but most likely will this fall...not because Obama is bi-racial but because he has no specifics, no track record, and really bad judgment in the people with which he surrounds himself.

My response to Lo-Jack is that part of the reason we have so many veterans is because people like McCain and Bush pushed for a war that was not merited. I was fully behind going into Afghanistan– even though any war is problematic on so many levels– for we had clear intelligence that the 9/11 masterminds came from training camps within that country. Perhaps if we had spent our resouorces their, we might have caught Bin Laden and helped Afghanistan get back its life, one not policed by the Taliban

NickNas   June 11th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Getting OUT OF Iraq is McCains LOWEST Priority. Just Like Bush he knows the longer we stay there the more BILLIONS they can get out of congress to give to their friends.

Ask yourselves this. WHY can the U.S. crank out the worlds best trained people in the ARMY, NAVY, AIRFORCE and MARINES in 90 Days of Training but the Iraqis have had YEARS to train and still can't do ANYTHING by themselves???

Saw reported this morning that Iraq is talking buddy buddy with Iran saying they don't want us there anyway so WHY????

If we made them self sufficient then WHERE WOULD WE SEND ALL THOSE BILLIONS every month????

Get it?

I'm a veteran and I like Obama. I don't see what a lot of people are saying are "scary" things that Obama is does. What I would like to know is:

What is so scary about Obama?

What is your evidence?

How can you support a candidate that self admits that he knows nothing about the economy or anything else much besides the war? (He's only running on that one item. Past that, he doesn't have any substance)

Do you really think Roe v. Wade will be repealed? (That's a matter of law, not what the President wants. Otherwise, Bush would have already done so.)

I don't see any problems with gays being married. What they do in the privacy of their own homes is their business, not yours and not mine.

Do you really think that the war in Iraq and 9/11 were tied together? You would believe anything then. I've got some desert property here in Florida for you to buy. Lots of heat and no humidity. For Iran to attack us, they have to have a good reason. They don't want to come over here and live. They like where they're living right now. If we were to be wiped off the face of the earth, the entire global economy would collapse, and they realize that. They aren't stupid, unlike some people.

Dickson   June 11th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Mcsame is just as confused as President Bush who is now regreting his comments preceeding the Iraq war. To the vindictive Hillary supporters who want to vote for Mcsame may God help you all, your shame will be full when Obama is sworn in as our next President come January 09.

hmmm   June 11th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

So I noticed some new attacks on Obama now include likening him to Carter and also referring to him as a Socialist/Marxist.

This won't work on me because a. I wasn't cognizant during the Carter years but I am aware that republican policies in place today have failed in all fronts (foreign policy, domestic, and the economy) and the republican nominee wants to continue practically every single one of these failed policies and b. I happen to be educated and I know that socialism means that the state controls and owns everything and that is clearly not what Obama or any Dem for that matter stands for. I find it ridiculous that you have the gall to use this argument when the current President has basically abused his executive office powers, making a mockery of checks and balances, and dragged this country through the mud for the last 8 years.

So try again Republicans, the people are waking up to your tired smear tactics and this time, even Rove won't be able to save you -you're going down!

robert ga   June 11th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

I mean, honestly what does win in iraq mean to mccain, establish a democracy or kingdom and eliminate Alkaida (or what ever). That should end all the hate we get from the middle east.

What paralell universe are you on Mcsame, that is never going to happen, not in your or our life time. So quit feeding us that "air" about staying till the job is done. And stop using our presence in Germany or Japan as examples.

So a timeline for withdrawal out of Iraq is "not important" in John McCain's eyes.

God help our children AND Grandchildren, who may get drafted into this war.

Bryan   June 11th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

MCain has already admitted, point blank, that he doesn't agree with the majority of Americans on Iraq.

So...let's see....he's admittedly out of touch on Iraq, admittedly doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to the economy....

How exactly is he still pulling down 44% of the electorate?

atypical   June 11th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Overall, McCain is in touch. . in touch with those that still cling to an old paradigm.

Obama represents the beginning of a new era, but it is not so much because of the man as it is the collective we in search of a new path, a new way of relating, a new way of living.

The scales are beginning to tip as more and more folks realize the need to let go of the dominant survival-based mentality.

There is a new paradigm emerging, and depending on your perspective you'll either embrace it and take an active role in nurturing it and pushing aside obsolete boundaries or you'll continue to live in a state of fear and apprehension, and run from an opportunity to not only reinvent yourself but the world in which we live.

"Don't be afraid to feel insecure."

Peace.

Wanted to post this on the other ticker, but my lunch break is almost over, so I'll say it here.

BTW: Brian from Knoxville, Hitler called. He wants his swastika back.

Okay, a couple of things:

1. Romney lost, so go away

2. Hillary lost, so all of her supporters who are still bringing her loss up, its over. Go vote for McCain and shut up.

3. I was alive when Carter was in office and I know that the Republicans made a deal to have the hostages held until Reagan got into office. Carter inherited a mess from Ford and Nixon

4. Reagan set the Civil Rights, Women's Rights, and Human Rights back 40 years. He cut any program designed to help the poor and caused what is known as "Reaganomics", the good ole trickle down theory. I often wonder why conservatives love him so much. He literally ruined this country and caused quite a long stream of inflation.

5. The Republicans are desperate and will do or say anything right now to get elected, including saying that they love Hillary. Apparently, none of these people remember the impeachment hearings and Kenneth Starr.

Chuck   June 11th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

South Korea, Japan, Germany are not Iraq. But I know how McCain thinks and why he says what he does. Stay in Iraq long enough until Iraq becomes stablized and there is no violence against Amercian troops, i.e. South Korea, Japan, Germany. But he is comparing apples and oranges. The complexity of the issues in Iraq are too much for McCain's brain. Now what if we said North Korea, Iran and Cuba. Do we have troops there? And if we did would the situations be stable and would there be no violence aganist American troops? And why is it we do not have troops in these areas. Because like Iraq we would not be welcomed and we would not be seen as liberators. We would have our backs against the wall playing policeman in streets that would errupt frequently and at will. The locals (partisans) would fight a terrorists war aganist the US until at some point, and not unlike Britain during the Amerfcian Revolution or Russia after their invasion of Afghanistan, we would say enough is enough and come home. But those with a brain and some common sense know we have already reached that point in Iraq. It is time to come home.

There is absolutley nothing wrong hunting down and eliminating terrorists who threaten or do harm to the U.S. But to send Amercian troops into another country for the long haul in order to nation build and to police the population is insane (especially in countries where there are several factions that do not want U.S. presence in the area).

In such cases (terrorists), hunt those individuals down who provide leadership and orgnaization to these groups, kill them, and then get the hell out of the location where they were located. Do the same with leaders of nations who can be proven support and train such terrorists. Target them and kill them with special teams or by way of CIA infiltration and then leave. To win a war against terrorists one has to learn to fight like a terrorists. Sending thousands of troops to expose themselves while patroling the streets of an unstable and violence prone nation is not the answer. If McCain does not understand that he has no business running for President of this country. Our only option is to get our troops home from Iraq, regroup and retrain special teams to infiltrate and kill terrorists, and stop these attempts to nation build in parts of the world where the people are not ready or prepared to create a democracy.

Check your ideals and diplomacy at the door, we plan to take care of EVERYTHING. We have a five year plan, its brilliant, I won't tell you what it is but by the time you'll live to regret it, it will be far too late. We at the Obama camp are completely in touch with a majority of all voters, as we've never made a decision that beared a significant amount of responsiblity. All we expect in return is blind obidience while we, and our great friends Farrakahn, Franken, Wright and the KKK... you'll be in good company

Hillary is a woman for sure, but she is not a good woman candidate. Choosing a woman candidate does not mean choosing a bad one. Now all of you do not sell yourself to Mcain for such a bad logical error. Stand behind Obama and I am sure you will get your voice heard.

Nicholas Mariniello   June 11th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

"Here they go again!". The Democrats are twisting the spirit of what John McCain had said. Isn't it true that for many decades the US has positioned troops around the globe to insure stability in specific regions? Isn't it true that there is no greater regional instability than what we currently have in the Middle East? Isn't it true that if we were not sustaining casualties American's would have less negative feelings about being in the Middle East?

No one person can be expected to have all the answers to the many questions that are being asked. America needs a President with the experience and wisdom to recognize the right answer when he/she sees it. Obama can't recognize a wayward preacher in his own church; never mind the answer to a very difficult international crisis that threatens the very freedoms we all enjoy and take for granted.

Talk is cheap. The ability to focus and act on sound judgement is what separates effective leaders from effective orators.

Steve   June 11th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Don't bet on veterans for McCain. I am a Viet Nam veteran. I respect the sacrifices McCain made as a naval aviator and P.O.W. I will not vote for him. Politically, he's out of touch, and out of options. He is a wife-beater. He calls women all kinds of nasty names. He divorced his first wife because she became disabled and he didn't want to deal with it. He has voted against a veteran's benefits bill because it was "too expensive". He can't control his temper (has punched other Senators). Nope. I don't need a grumpy old man running my country. I don't give a rat's rectum if he IS a veteran. He's a basket case.

Won't Be Held Hostage by Clinton Supporters   June 11th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

Hillary Clinton's "staunch supporters" (because not all of you have completely lost your minds) make me laugh. I mean it won't be funny come November when Obama is the POTUS. I read the whole "Puma Pac" thing, and I'm laughing even harder. You all are ridiculous. I've never seen a nominee treated this badly before for winning fair and square. Mad about MI & FL? Thank those legislatures who created that problem? Mad about the media "bias"? Then stop writing on CNN blogs and watching these news channels in protest. Mad about how the DNC and Obama "stole this election?" How could he have stole it... if he won more of the pledged delegates? Why is it only big states count and the others shouldn't? He won more states, more delegates and ended up with more support of the supers. How is it someone way ahead ends up behind? Simple, they mess up and she did, get over it. This isn't some voting, freedom, woman's rights, I don't know what to call it. You're mad he won and you'll come up with any excuse, no matter how flimsy to support your irrational behavior. Anyone I've talked to a Clinton supporter in person who expressed how they're upset and what they think was unfair. I understood it and I spoke to her about my support for Obama and you want to know what she said? "I agree, and in my head I know you're right, but its gonna take awhile for my heart to catch up". You want to know why that was an easy discussion? Because not all 18 million of your are nuts. You can be mad, you can cry, whine and "protest with my vote" all you want. But the right to vote isn't a right of protest, it was a right of choice to make good decisions for you and your country. It is not to make purposedly bad decisions for the sake of petty spite. We Obama supporters don't owe you anything; to kiss your butt, Clinton's butt or anyone's butt. We worked hard, he worked hard and it paid off, the end. The whining is just unbearable and you know at the end of the day, you live with those decisions. Hopefully, eventually, you'll come back down to earth, at least most of you will, for the others, I'll pray for you, you really need it.

So the date of withdrawal is not important, huh? I'd love to see McCain go on the campaign trail & say that. I don't think he'd get a favorable response. I'd love to see him try to tell that to a soldier's husband or wife, a soldier's mother or father, a soldier's son or daughter, a soldier's brother or sister. Just because he's all gung ho about this war & doesn't care at all about the families it's destroying doesn't mean everyone else feels the same way. Why veterans would vote for him is beyond me. He doesn't want to improve their benefits. I'll continue to say this, if you vote for John McCain, I don't want to hear not 1 single whine or complaint from you when we're twice as worse off than we are now, & we're pretty bad off right now. Voting for McCain is simply hate voting, because you hate the skin Barack Obama is in.

McCain does not sound like he has a firm grip in the complex issues involved in Iraq. McCain was a pilot, a PWO, but never a commander and, frankly, he is not very intelligent nor studious. He does not inspire my confidence in making major security decisions such as how to get out of the mess in Iraq.

Obama also lacks military command experience, but his extraordinary intelligence will allow him to quickly evaluate input from experts to make the final decisions regarding the war efforts. Also, his strong diplomatic skills will allow him to effectively negotiate with our potential enemies to avoid war where reasonably possible.

Abortion: If Roe vs. Wade is overturned it would not make abortion illegal across the board as implied. It would leave it up to the states. States like NY would never make it illegal. We protect the right to privacy.

Would someone please explain to me how gay marriage effects anyone else except the two gay people getting married? If you don't like gays getting married, then don't marry a gay.

Iraq: If you want to fight terrorism on behalf of 9/11 then sign up and go to Afganistan. Iraq is about oil...not terror.

Iran: Good solution, let's start another war when we can't finish the first one.

Rosaleen M. Mackay   June 11th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

I don't know why McCain gets confused at times, but I do know that we have had a president for the past seven years who has great difficulty talking. Even when his seech is clearly scripted, he flubs it. And when he goes off on his own tangent, then watch out. Has anyone forgotten the mess of "You can fool me once....uhh....fool me once...uh....you kn ow what I mean!" If McCain becomes president, he will not be in front of town hall meetings taking questions from the crowd, many of whom will be ardent supporters. How will he contend with speaking and the UN or his State of the Union addresses or when he speaks throughout the world to other politicians (those he believes agree with him but not those who could possibly be terrorists (those who don't agree with him).

I believe that Brack Obama not only sounds good but his speeches are also substantive. Those of you who see him as "just a speecfh" should try really listening. In 2002 when he spoke out against going to war in Iraq, he very eloquently presented all his arguments. So if as Hillary Clinton believes she and McCain are ready and Obama is just a 2002 speech, she clearly hasn't listened to that speech; if she had, she would understand how many of us see him as that speech and are glad. By the way, I am over 60 and a white woman.

"No, but that's not too important," McCain replied. "What’s important is the casualties in Iraq, Americans are in South Korea, Americans are in Japan, American troops are in Germany. That’s all fine. American casualties and the ability to withdraw; we will be able to withdraw."

All people need to remember is, "Maybe a hundred." My question to this man is, are there road side bombs to worry about in Korea, Japan and Germany. Being in Iraq is not like being in those other countries.

When people volunteer to join the military, they don't join to fight for oil and try to take over the world.

or...he could make him keel over tomorow to teach you not to use the Lord's name in vain...it could happen.

seperation of church and state flame war aside, well-being of the troops is the most important thing above all. however, to say that the withdrawl date is "not important" would be foolish. withdrawal from the hot zone would be the most logical and likely way to ensure safety
from the dangers that exist in that area. and no, it is not "just another station" because we are not at war with germany, japan, italy, or the other countries we have stations at. and as for the troops going straight to their next base afterwards, that is unlikely unless they want to. aside from 2 weeks manditory R+R, they can opt to take additional leave and then GO HOME to their families. thus, the call to "bring our troops home" does hold sway.

Again, the President does not make or interpret law so I wouldn't worry too much on Roe v Wade. I have not yet heard him claim that ruling needs to be overturned either. He has stated he will appoint strict constitutional judges to any open positions. And if you really think an issue such as this would ever be overturned you're crazy. Other than the many other things I feel is wrong with Mccain, the main thing that IS evident, no matter what he talks about, is he is showing his age (seriously). You people may not want to face it but he is confused at times..it is JUST LIKE Reagan when he was in early stages of his Alzheimers, and it did show in his public appearances/speeches.It is showing publicly with Mccain...ask anyone who remembers Reagan's last year or so.

Realistically, Mccain is too old! Shame on those of you who deep down inside know this but because of hate and partisanship will vote for him. Vote in the best interest of the country not on partylines, status quo ideas about the other party. Too many people treat it like it is JUST a contest of the two parties as if this were some college football rivalry. It makes me sick and sad that mine and many others are serving & dealing with this war while this type of bickering goes on here.

The Iraq war SHOULD be #1 on our list, it is where all the OTHER problems have trickled down from...wake up America.

Kenneth M   June 11th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

IT IS QUITE CRULE OF MCCAIN TO SAY THAT IT DOES NOT MATTER. THERE ARE KIDS WHO HAVE NEVER SEEN THERE DADS BECAUSE THE SOLDERS HAVE BEEN THERE SO LONG.

Agnostic Democrat   June 11th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

For all of those hardcore, hard-headed individuals out there, who like McCain, don't get it: When you invade a country – (that hasn't "attacked" anyone in over two centuries just for the record) -based on lies, there does at some point have to be an end date.
And again to remind you, AlQaeda in Iraq wasn't there until we INVADED! Get it?!

'Welcome Hillary Supporters'

Great post! Those are many great reasons to vote for Obama!

John in NY   June 11th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

In early 2000 I loved McCain and agreed with almost everything he said. After Bush used dirty tricks to beat McCain I voted dem. I knew then b4 anyone else that Bush was too dumb to be president. Looks like I was right.

I can clearly see that McCain is not the man he used to be. I don't know why it is. If he opposed the Bush Tax cuts and the Bush war then I could vote for him. I just don't understand how he could vote against the tax cuts and then say they are needed.

On top of that it seems as if he mixes things up all the time now. I am not worried about him now and I am not worried about him dieing. I am worried about him a few years from now and him losing his mind.

robert ga   June 11th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

You mean we don't have a walmart there alread?

Now that is unbelieveable.

AJ   June 11th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

I voted for Kerry but now question his jugement. His man crush on Obama makes me believe that we are lucky he didn't get elected. He would have been just as incompetent as Bush. Too bad the realistic choice we now face is between Senator McCain and Mr. Ego in a suit. I don't know if I can stomach voting for McCain. I know I cant stomach voting for Obama.

Nicole   June 11th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

my 3 yr old daughter has more sense than mcbush and anyone else that thinks staying in iraq is in the best interest of the american people. this war that should have never be started to begin with is only bankrupting hard working americans. the cost of food, gas, college education, health care etc is sky high thanks to the failed mcbush administration.

randy   June 11th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

This is to show how out of torch john mcain is when it comes to this issue you might be a war hero but if your not right on your policies you not win an election. From what I am seeing from john mcain he is going closer to the loser lane.

"Welcome Hillary Supporters" June 11th, 2008 12:55 pm ET,

Wow, you are something else.

I don't support abortion, but if it's outlawed, do you know what will happen? Back alley abortions and dumpster babies.

We are NOT in Iraq because of 9/11. Afghanistan, the war you have forgotten, is a result of 9/11, NOT Iraq.

Calling to nuke Iran? Idiotic.

Now I like to believe you don't really feel this way, but since the senile John McCain has this mindset, you are just supporting him.

milly   June 11th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

McSame should tell that to all of the families waiting for their loved ones to come home from Iraq. I'm sure he would hear a very different response. How insensitive can Gramps be? Why doesn't he re-enlist and take continuous tours of duty and see how he likes it ? It's so easy to say this when he isn't the one there.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't U.S. military bases located in generally safe areas and have military families living on them? I don't see how having a base in the Middle East makes sense. Can you see an entire base full of American people being safe ANYWHERE in a region where most of the people are angry that we are there in the first place?

Everyone should look at Obama and Mccain's voting record.

Obama has 85% approval for "womens issues" and 100% pro-choice.
Mccain has 15% approval for "womens issues" and 0% pro-choice.
Obama has 90% approval for veterans issues.
Mccain has 40% approval for veterans issues.

I, too, was surprised by the veterans issues numbers. I ask you all to look it up yourself to confirm.

russell   June 11th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

that's right.....it's a new day and a different century , we need to do away with this old old way of thinking , and put some young new fresh ideas in Washington, because if Mcain and his supporters haven't notice that there policies are not working.......................DUH.

You guys should be ashamed of yourselves.

Read post from 'Welcome Hillary Supporters' and this is exactly why NOT to vote for McCain. Very scary !

Sean   June 11th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

I know that the McCain camp claims his comments were taken out of context, but I've also seen them IN context, and frankly, I still find them troubling.

Even if you believe we should keep troops in Iraq right now, I think it's hard to claim that when we can get our troops home is "not important". I'm sure the troops themselves, as well as their families consider the return of their loved ones to be VERY important.

Brilliant satire   June 11th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

I'd like to welcome all the Hillary Clinton supporters to the republican party and thank you for coming to your senses and backing the best candidate, John McCain.

Together we can:

1) help reverse Roe v. Wade and make abortion illegal – let's stop the murder of unborn babies!

2) stop gays from getting married – let's get a constitutional amendment to stop gay marriage and let them know they are not normal!

3) keep fighting the good fight in Iraq for as long as it takes – remember 9/11 and what we are fighting for!

4) get ready to invade Iran – we know they are planning to nuke us – let's get them first! McCain will make sure we do!

Good to see democrats finally waking up and becoming more conservative!

LJ   June 11th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Obama is out of touch. He screams change but that alone won't bring change. I hope I'm not considered a racist because I dared to ask what is his plan for change.

Democrat for McCain...(wow thats an oxymoron)..you should be ashamed of yourself as well as all others who are planning to vote for this warmonger who has nothing but war thought 24/7...ask him about economic issues and inside his head he's screaming IRAQ IRAQ BOMB IRAN..oh and..when he crawls out of bed each day IRAQ WAR FIGHT FIGHT

The Bush Twins : George and John   June 11th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

"No, but thats not too important." That's easy for him to say. Him and his twin Bush just seem to think it's ok to have and keep our men and women in harms way since they haven't a clue as to how to bring this to an end. The Iraqis will never step up as long as the good old USA is willing to take the bullets.
I'll bet McBushes son is in a comfort zone as he does his tour.

John McCain is a victim of his own "straight talk" persona. He just can't help throwing out dumb comments just because they sound like tough talk.

John, you should just come out and say it, "We're all going to die, my friends, and the world will end when the sun turns into a supernova. Nothing you or I do will have any meaning when the end comes." See how that bit of straight talk works for you.

Please Hill supporters   June 11th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

I find it amusing that you so called Democrats on the left (aka socialist supporters and terrorist sympathizers) are trying to force women to vote for Obama because of Roe V. Wade.

Well, we true democrats, moderate democrats that do lean left and agree with most of the domocrat's platform will not be bullied.

Get over yourselves. John McCain is not George W. Bush, but Obama is the second coming of Jimmy Carter.

We've seen what an extreme liberal does to the country and we don't want any part of it. 20% interest rates, higher taxes, and lines at the gas pump are not the answer.

Good luck Dems... Because we moderate democrats will not stand with you.

Travis. LA, CA   June 11th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

"No, but that's not too important,"

He seems to think of our soldiers as nothing more than action figures in a game of war. Someone needs to remind McCain that these are living, breathing human beings whose lives are actually worth something.

Empty suit, empty promises   June 11th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

McCain is right in this particular statement, sorry lefties.

Funny how gutless "never wore a uniform" Obama sends out John "three scatches" Kerry to do his dirty work.

Kerry should not be a spokesperson for anyone but "Ghengis Khan" (remember him")?

While people are talking about people being "confused", is Obama confused about the fact that he SHOULD submit an actual birth certificate to alleviate any questions? What ya hiding "Barry"?

No problem "Barry" the media will ignore it.

Caryn, WDC   June 11th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

McCain LOVES war...that's all he knows. He said it himself in his new television ads. His grandfather went to war, his father was in war, he was a POW, and he sent his sons to Iraq. He wouldn't know what to do if there was peace. HE LOVES WAR.

al-kanemi   June 11th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

The President should be concerned about the lives lost and sacrifices already made by our service men and women. It is likely we'll need to have military staff in Iraq for years to come to sustain the peace.

JJ   June 11th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

This is just another reason why we don't need him in the White House. He is constantly going back and forth and Kerry was right. He's confused.

Sandy J. Smith, Battle Hill, NC.   June 11th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Welcome hillary supporters!

with your help we can get the bible back in school! Also, get rid of abortion and this rediculous idea of healthcare for all! We can't afford it! Thanks for wising up! With McCain we can finally stack the supreme court for the next 20 years!

Seamus   June 11th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Why does McCain show so much disdain for the troops? First he says he's "fine" with them being there 100 years (which I'm sure is not "fine" for them and their families, even if they're not taking casualties, and how exactly that is going to happen, McCain doesn't say). Then he opposes the GI Bill because it would lead to too many troops leaving the service for a good education (the horror! Never mind that we'd recruit just as many with a good educational incentrive) Now he says it's not important how long they're there. What a disgrace.

MoveOn   June 11th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

There's CNN's lead reporter, Michele Obama, at it again.

Did you know BOTH Michele and Barry server in the Army? They both won lots of medals and are the cat's meow when it comes to being all-knowing. She knows what is important and that makes it CNN's most important topic.

She thinks sooooo highly of Kerry, too. He won all those medals, too, for ALL those war wounds..(scratches to the rest of us).

You go, girl. Get CNN to pay Kerry, too, as one of your reporters.

Eric   June 11th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

John McCain is confused – he'll veto beer, he'll send bottled hot water to dehydrated babies and he certainly doesn't care if US forces come back or not, just like Bush who is secretly negotiating for permanent US presence in Iraq. John "Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran" McCain is also in favor of opening up a third front in the middle east, further stretching our armed forces. In addition, if he cares so much about US lives, then why would he advocate engaging Iran militaristically.

John McCain is confused. It may be his old age, it may just be that he's ignorant and stupid.

Caryn, WDC   June 11th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Win in Iraq? What does that mean exactly? It's pretty obvious that we've already lost.

Bob/NH   June 11th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

There is no need to tiptoe around McCains ripe old age. His age will be a factor in his ability to do the job. Imagine if McCain at the age of 71 interviewed to be a bus driver at your local, public school. He probably wouldnt be hired because they would conclude that he is too old and it would be unsafe for the children on board.

McCain is too old to be president. He would be too old to do many jobs in America.

Matthew   June 11th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Just think of where the New England Patriots would have been if they stuck with the old experience guy in Drew Bledsoe, instead of going w/ the young, up and coming star in Tom Brady (3 rings).

- Samething happened in Dallas. Drew Bledsoe 9-7. Tony Romo 13-3.
- Samething in Pittsburgh stay will the old journeyman or go w/ Ben Rothesburger... They go w/ Ben and win a Superbowl. 1st since 1980.

Karen explain the date not being the issue to someone’s child who hasn’t seen their parent for more than a year, explain that to the wives and mothers whose husbands and sons have served much longer than they were told. The date is the issue when we spend billions of dollars on this war and our own economy is going down the drain while thousands of homes are foreclosed on. The date is the issue. We have been in Iraq long enough. You and McCain and Bush believe so much in this war then yall can go fight it while our troops come home.

Terry, Butte, Mt   June 11th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Wow, McCain continues to show how out of touch he is on the war.

Too bad Lieberman was not around to bail him out again. The date of withdrawal is extremely important to those serving bravely in Iraq and their families back home.

It is extremely important to those that want to go after those that really attacked us on 9/11.

It is extremely important to those that want our economy moving in a positive direction again.

It is extremely important to those that are concerned with the security in Isreal, the middle east and America.

It is extremely important that we elect Obama as our 44th president to the United States. (Someone who understands our economy, the real war on terrorism and who had the foresight to see the Iraq war for what it really was.)

boo-yah   June 11th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

I think every detail about the war is important. For McCain to suggest that a withdrawl date is not important shows just how out of touch he really is.

Obama 08 & 12

DJ, LA, CA   June 11th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Nice to see the McCain supporters reaching out to all those loyal Clinton supporters.

Also nice to see McCain supporters want to ignore the real issues that the country faces...and instead waste time on OLD, DIVISIVE, ACTIVIST wedge issues related to religion.

Quit wasting my tax money debating GAYS and ABORTION. That's too much information and the federal government shouldn't be wasting time on all that crap yet again. Let the states decide and move on to the real issues.

Amy   June 11th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Define what will comprise a Win the War in Iraq.

I have yet to hear Bush/McCain or anyone else describe what a "win" will look like.

The War was WRONG and we must bring our troops home in the safest manner and the shortest time.

Understand at 71 years old, to McCain there is no real vested interest in how history will define him from this point forward. He will more than likely not be here in 20 years. It is easy to keep going in the wrong direction when you know that you are getting off at a stop befoe the final destination.

McCain needs to get real and we need to leave Iraq.

Ken in NM   June 11th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Exaclty Karen, a soldier doesn't get a say where they are stationed but as citizens of the United States we should get a say where and how our troops are used and stationed.

Norris   June 11th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

So how long will it take us to win this "WAR ON TERROR" anyway? Ten, fifteen, twenty more years. Seems to me like McCain is not in too big of a hurry? I mean like, at what point do we say, "it's time to wrap this up? What was the objective of this war anyway?

Russell Hammond   June 11th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Everyone who is pro Iraq war should be required to join the US military service (College Republicans) or at least offer one "of age" family member to fight. Guess what…no war. It's so easy for neocons to wave the American flag when blacks and poor whites become the low hanging fruit who end up on the front lines. Send those college Republicans who conveniently have "better ways to serve" at home. Blah.

Linda31   June 11th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

False attack? You are once again on tape. Get with the program, you would think that since this war is so unpopular that you would be careful of what you say, guess not.

You must be confused if you think when our troops leave Iraq is not important.

The Clear Thinking Indepedent   June 11th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

John -

It matters ... 4,100 US Troops dead ... 14,000 SERIOUS maimed or catastrophically disabled by this farce of a war.

When your opponents mention your comment about stying in Iraq for 100 years, you cry foul and say they are misconstruing your words...

Yet today, you clearly place Iraq, through YOUR OWN WORDS, in the catagory of Korean (we've been there for 60 years) or Germany.

The American public did not sign up for this GOP-mandated, unfunded, unplanned, poorly executed, experiment by you and George Bush. Our budget does not support 20, 40, 60 years of spending, at any level, in Iraq.

Step away from Iraq John.

Belle   June 11th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

I was appalled when the U.S. attacked Iraq. I still believe there was no excuse. However, I understand that to get out, we must be careful and try to leave behind as stable a government as possible. We created this mess and we are responsible for cleaning it up. I believe Obama would simply pull the troops out and pretend he is not responsible for the chaos that follows-and I understand that there is already chaos. Still, I believe McCain has better judgment than Obama. Obama has done nothing but make pretty, politically correct speeches. I believe that is all he is capable of doing. Just as Bush had no experience; Obama has no experience. Obama is also just as arrogant as Bush. Let's not trade the far-right inexperienced arrogance for the far-left inexperienced arrogance. I would have chosen almost any of the original Democratic candidates over McCain; but, Obama is the Democratic version of "W".

Veteran in Kansas   June 11th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

We have a US military that stretch to the breaking point, we are having difficulty in retaining and recruiting to the services, especially to the Army and Marines, but what is important is the number of casualties in Iraq.

No, what is important is defining the military objectives that will lead to the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq. This was a key component to the Powell Doctrine, something this administration violated from day one.

The military has done a fantastic job. They have accomplished each and every mission objective that they have been given. Iraq is a military sucess, so why are we still there, because our political leaders have failed to identify the strategic military objectives that would result in a withdraw of US combat forces. Our current administration has failed in the seperation of military objectives and political objectives.

Why has this been so hard to do? It is because the invasion of Iraq was based upon political objectives from the start, not military objectives. The military objective was the defeat of the Iraqi military, the replacement of the government of Saddam. It occurred, now let the politicians finish it. Our servicemen and women are still in Iraq because our leaders to include Senator McCain can not seperate military force from political processes that need to occur to bring this error to its conclusion.

Mr. Spock   June 11th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

John McCain is absolutely right. He saw what was happening to our troops in Iraq...due to mismanagement and did something about it.
He broke with his own party to do this. John McCain is in touch with the American people...and will prove that in November.

John Kerry is out of touch. He spends all of his time running around defending the indefensible...Obama...and ignores MA.
He is up for re-election this fall and has a democratic opponent in the primary (his first in 24 years) and a republican opponent in the general election. Hopefully in the fall the people of MA can show both Kerry and Obama the door.

It only takes a month of "intolerable" violence against Americans in Iraq in July or August, to remind Americans of why they hate this Iraq War and McCain's position on it.

Remember people, you are talking about a guy who spent 5 years as a Vietnam POW, you really think he gives a hoot about troops being in Iraq 5, 10 or 20 years! McCain himself at his age and health may not be around in 5 to 10 years!

What the man said was, "Americans are in Japan, Germany, and Korea and are not engaged in conflicts in those countries that are taking American lives. Japan and Germany since the end of WW II (may be for 100 years!), and Korea since the '40's and '50's. America is in these countries for peace keeping purposes and to protect neighboring countries from historical threats such as Communist China, Russia, and North Korea. Hey, it's worked and maybe we'll be in Irag for 100 years to protect the Mideast from the likes of Iran and Syria. No time frame, no American loss of life once the pieces are in place. Senator McCain, stay in Iraq to finish the business at hand, establishing a chance for the people of Iraq and Afghanistan to choose if democracy is meant for them or not.

McCain is right. The DATE is not the issue.

When you enlist in the armed services, you don't get to pick where you will go. You can't say "I want to be stationed in my home town". The concern should be the well being of the troops. Are we now going to start ranting about troops in Germany??? Or how about other places US Troops are stationed??? The goal should be safety and stability for the troops. If their tour is not up – they aren't coming home if they leave Iraq – they are going to another posting.

I'm not saying I agree with all of McCain's positions – I don't. There are a lot I disagree with. But this is not one of them.
----------------------

Their concern should be the well being of the troops? So explain 3, 4 and 5 tours of duty because our military is stretched so thin due to our presence in Iraq which under McCain dates for duration are not important.

Hey Terry, newsflash: if Obama loses this election, his supporters will blame Clinton for stirring the pot and she will NEVER win another primary. Obama may need Hillary's supporters, but Hillary needs his supporters too. If you're merely SO bitter that you want to bring down the Democratic Party, that's fine; but if you want Hillary to have a chance in 2016, you'd better pray that Barack wins in 2012.

I saw the interview. HE sia that it was not too IMPORTANT! Tucker Bounds knows no bounds of shame when he counter attacks on this issue. Rhe Repubulicans are War Mongering Theives, who have sold the USA down the river, just like McCain did to his fellow prisoners in Viet Nam. You cannot cover up that this man only wants war because it continues to make the rich Republicans even more rich. @ Welcome Hillary Supporters...3) keep fighting the good fight in Iraq for as long as it takes – remember 9/11 and what we are fighting for!

Now this statement would have made a lot more sense had the terrorist from 9/11 been from Iraq...sorry they weren't! We didn't have a good reason to go into Iraq and everyone knows that now. It will yet again become another place where America has to set up permanent bases. How long ago was the Vietnam war(another ridiculous war)...Don't we still have troops there! The more important danger beyond Iran is China who is constantly doing nuclear testing and shooting off freaking missles, but we don't care because 98% of our goods including those "VERY PATRIOTIC" flag pins comes from China and their cheap labor.

COMEON HILLARY SUPPORTERS AND LET US ALL WELCOME YOU TO THE TEAM CARRYING THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, JOHN MCCAIN!!!!!!!!!

He is trusted more by americans than Obama, and so is his wife.

I would like to discuss something that i dont understand. Why do Obama backers think Cindy Mccain is such a bad person?
Is it because they dont like John so they think they should be prejudice and just not like Cindy? I THINK SO!
She founded a non profit organization which: emergency medical care to disaster-struck or war-torn third-world areas, thats a GREAT thing SHE DID!
Did you know while in Bangladesh she met two infant girls she decided needed to be brought to the United States for medical treatment and She also decided to adopt one of the girls?
that is also soo NICE of them, yet Obama supporters are prejudice towards her, and she did nothing wrong, unlike Michelle Obama Claiming that "for the first time in her adult life she is proud of her country" thats pitiful.
Well like i said welcome Aboard!

Kathy in Oregon   June 11th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

You Obama drones are so transparent - posing as McCain supporters and LOUDLY threating to repeal of abortion rights.

I'm a Clinton supporter who has ZERO confidence in Obama = I will NOT be voting for your unqualified nominee.

I am considering casting a vote for McCain because I am not a single issue voter...and there is more to life than Roe V. Wade.

I genuinely feel that Obama will do MORE harm if elected president that McCain could possibly do - especially in regards to Iraq!

The Obama camp is once again attacking the opponent by parsing words. Too bad folks - McCain is RIGHT, the actual "date" of withdraw is irrelevant.

Obama or Clinton, Never McCain   June 11th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

I have realized that voting for Obama, while tough for me to do, is still by far the best option in November. It is clear that McCain is the opposite of everything HIllary stands for, and we can't allow him to sneak into the white house, even if Hillary is not in it. Let's support Obama and defeat McCain in a landslide, which will send a message to Republicans across the country that we are tired of their ineffective policies!

Melissa, MI   June 11th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

Wow. How out of touch indeed. While it would be great for casualties to be reduced another aspect of the war that greatly upsets me is the billions of dollars that we are spending there. That money could be spent in the U.S. or not spent at all in order to stop adding to our country's debt.

Paul, Riverside, CA   June 11th, 2008 1:11 pm ET

I am a PROUD American. My Grandfather fought in the Pacific in WWII, and my father was in Vietnam. The only thing that kept me out of joing the military is a pre-existing medical condition that the USMC said was a risk.

How can someone that is a Hillary supporter vote for this clown?

Not important? Boy McCain just doesn't get it!

This is CENTRAL !!!

This war has bankrupted the American people and has had FAR too high a human cost - ask anyone who's lost a loved one in Iraq what's important...

McCain makes me sick!

It's SO important that we elect Barack Obama our next president – we can't afford another clueless old man who focuses on the microcosm of 'VICTORY' and failes to see the bigger picture...

$4 a gallon gas is stretching working people beyond their capacities... But McCain couldn't know what that's like – married to money as he is!

This is just ignorant. Hillary supporters cannot be serious about voting against their own interests just to spite Obama because he won the nomination. Obama will win in November with or without you.

John McCain is senile and can't even read the darn teleprompter. He is constantly misspeaking about Iraq and believes that his personal war experience qualifies him to lead the nation. He is always flip-flopping on issues and now more than ever just to appeal to conservatives. Why was he so outspoken about his objection to the Bush tax cuts, now he's promoting them? McCain is a realist and engages in plain talk. Obviously, Obama, who speaks out of both sides of his mouth, enjoys dissecting every word McCain says, taking it out of context, and using it to paint McCain as old, befuddled, confused. Voters with functioning brains know McCain's record and that he has a wealth of experience that will serve him well when he's president. The wanna-be, whippersnapper pup who'd like to muscle his way into the White House is no match for the old lion.

There is no "winning" Iraq. This is not that kind of war anymore. We already won the conventional battle, and right now all we're doing is babysitting. Ian   June 11th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

We have bases (that we know about) in over 130 countries. What's the harm in having a few more? Besides economic collapse.

Von Bismark Vienna   June 11th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

WHERE DOES McCAIN REALLY STAND?

Teri   June 11th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

You Obama lovers keep saying that McCain is the same as Bush- then keep in mind that in 8 years, nothing happened to Roe v Wade under Bush, did it?

Kris   June 11th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

Caption from picture "my friends" Withdrawing from Iran..Lieberman leans over and whispers in his ear.....opps I mean Iraq is not important right now. Please...This guy is wrong...very wrong.

Mister Anderson   June 11th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

DIdn't McCain say a few weeks ago that the war would be won by 2013 and the troops would start coming home?

When will the DNC or Obama start producing a series of commercials with "Maverick McCain" debating "Republican Presidential Nominee McCain"?

Tejano   June 11th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

McCain gets it right. You Obama idiots don't have a clue about Iraq and the war on Radical Islam. Elect Obama and you might as well be prepared for the destruction of Western Civilization. This is not about you or me it is about the future of our Nation and Civilized Society. We will not surrender.

Debby   June 11th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

Obama camp taking a shot when their chosen one hasn't even been over there to see for himself whats going on talk about an idiotic statement. Kerry commenting is like listening to bozo the clown with the big flip/flop shoes. I understood what McCain meant and I also heard troops might be withdrawing as early as Sept. its been on the news.

A Moderate   June 11th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

Yeah. Who cares when we leave Iraq. Certainly not anyone who claims to "hate war" like John McCain in his new ads.

58 old white ladies for OBAMA   June 11th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

FORE THOSE THAT WOULD EVEN CONSIDER VOTING

FOR MCMOULD, WE SHOULD START A PETITION TO

RUN BUSH AGAIN. DEFINITELY A BETTER CANDIDATE.

MCLIER IS PRIMED AND READY, NOT TO JUST CONTINUE

BUSH POLICY, BUT TO EXPAND IT BY TRILLIONS OF

DOLLARS TO THE CORPORATIONS. AT THE END OF HIS

4 YEARS, GAS WOULD BE $10 A GALLON.

Linda Esen   June 11th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

McCain 08 : WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO WIN IN IRAQ>>>>DO U HAVE ANY IMMEDIATE FAMILY OR ANYONE RELATIVE WHO HAVE BEEN MURDERED OVER THERE. You should be concerned about a "leader" who was a POW, Senator for 80 years AND YET he voted for a war and continues to advocate it !!! Why dont you vlunteer for the military and go over to Iraq and WIIN WIN WIN .....

Loretta from California   June 11th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

Not too important. NOW IVE HEARD ENOUGH. I'm sorry, but only the mentally UNSTABLE, unbalanced idiot would even consider voting for this man.

DEMONSTRATE YOUR COURAGE OF CONVICTION

Franky   June 11th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

Let me get this staright............we have the fewest casulaties in last month(I believe) than when the war started, right?? You know, something like that. So, I ask you, what else do we need to do??? Create a Burger King??? Create some bunkers??? We might as well have a Wal Mart........

Kristen- Philadelphia, PA   June 11th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

McCain is just off to an awful start for his general election campaign now that he actually has a competitor. Why does he keep saying such things? Maybe he truly is out of touch with what Americans in this country are going through. And now he is going on some world tour to Canada, Mexico and Columbia. This man is out of touch with Americans and is obviously not trying to get in touch with us.

Lets all vote Obama 08!!!!

John Starnes Tampa Florida   June 11th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

Why is there no mention on CNN home page of the filing of 35 Articles of Impeachment against Bush by Kucinich?

George   June 11th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

He is running for the Bush's third term and how he will withdraw troops from Iraq. Some idiots still support this guy and they want more blodd in Iraq. shame on you guys who support Bush's third term

McCain Democrat   June 11th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

Should I support a candidate for whom a majority of his supporters can't name any of his accomplishments?

Former Clinton Supporters for McCain '08

rice, bryan   June 11th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

too bad he won't remember saying this either. kinda sounds like reagan, and iran contra doesn't he?

Herman in LA   June 11th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

What a joke, he makes me sick on the stomach... If a black man was this old and running for president and making this many mistakes he would be hung and thrown out to dry.

MD   June 11th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

McCain is right. You all know what he meant. Kerry continues to be unimportant on national and international issues – though he knows a lot more than Obama.

Former Clinton / Now Obama   June 11th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

The audacity of John Mccain!! He is so out of touch! He is not listening to Americans. Former Hillary supporters do we really want to vote for a man that doesn't understand what is going on!! I'm just as hurt as you are but come one. He is pro-life, for continuing Bush economic policies and national security policies. We can't afford to let this country continue on the same path we have been going on the last 8 years.

Obama 08

MD FOR OBAMA   June 11th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Typical mcPig Repig comment.
He is out of touch. He won't make the best choices for our country.

Damian Salter   June 11th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Keep digging that hole McCain. By the November you'll be all the way to China. At least while you're there, you'll be able to ask for a trade debt reduction!

The Clear Thinking Independent   June 11th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

On the Wednesday, June 11, 2008

When asked about his energy plan and any relief that he could bring Americans from the rising price of gasoline before before the election, Senator McCain said,

We need alternate energy solutions. We need new battery technology that would allow a car to travel 100 miles.

When the interviewer expressed skepticism that battery technology was likely to advance it that period of time, Mr. McCain stayed on point and did not waver.

I have a couple of problems with this.

The 1st is, we already have batteries that meet his threshold; he is uninformed / out of touch.

The 2nd is that, when someone tried to point out the flaw in his position, instead of reconsidering, he " stayed the course".

b black   June 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

McAdulterer, has lost his mind!
obama 08!

Mb   June 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Staying in Iraq is not the same as staying in Japan, Germany or South Korea. They do not have a part of thier citizenry that would die to remove us from their country. Why can't we as Americans accept the fact that we should not be in every country in the world militarily.

Yasriel   June 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Is this the man Clinton supporters would like to vote for? If they do, then it shows that they were not supporting her for the issues rather for other reasons far removed issues.

Down with Obama   June 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Meanwhile, McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said the Obama campaign is launching "a false attack."

==================================

Everything about Obama is false!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IAMWMD   June 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Tales from the McCrip has to stay the course after making promises to George Dubya Bush for raising money for his so called Straight Talk Express which is being driven remotely by none other than Carl Rove.

David Goldman for OBAMA   June 11th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

I HAVE A GREAT IDEA, IF I SAY SO MYSELF.

MCMOULD (TOLE THAT) CAN RUN FOR

PRESIDENT OF IRAQ.

THIS LAME IDIOT WANTS TO GIVE CORPORATIONS

ANOTHER 3 TRILLION DOLLARS IN TAX BREAKS.

BUT AS HE PUT IT, COLLEGE TUITION FOR OUR VETS

IS " TOO GENEROUS". AND WE CAN FORGET ABOUT HEALTH

INSURANCE. I WOULD RATHER VOTE FOR A BUSH 3RD TERM.

Alice in Florida   June 11th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

I bet CNN has an altar to Obama in their employee lounge where all the employees can go worship their God and leave offereings.

Peter   June 11th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

BTW.

What's this about Bill Clinton canceling his speech at UCLA?

Uncle Sam   June 11th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

Are you still grateful that the Obama campaign promised a new kind of politics?

Pitiful.

Peter   June 11th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

Enough already.

GO HOME MCCAIN!!!!!!

mollygonz   June 11th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

McSame please go away! Everything you say lately is a total gaffe and then you deny it. I am a military wife who is an Obama supporter because atleast he has sense enough to work on a withdrawl method whereas you have no idea!! I hope and pray you do not become president because then our military will be in such dire straights. They are bad enought right now. They don't need to be burdened for years to come.

McCain08   June 11th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

McCain will lead the way. We will win in Iraq with him as our leader.
Hillary supporters welcome to the right side. We will have a push this time to stop the MURDER of babies. Glad that you have seen the light and will vote McCain this time. Obama is for gay rights and we need to keep marrage between a MAN and a WOMAN. They want to uphold Roe V Wade but we will shoot it down now. It is my hope that with your help we can overturn some of this left wing stuff.
Vote Life Vote McCain08

Welcome Hillary Supporters   June 11th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

Terry   June 11th, 2008 12:55 pm ET
