Johansson is a fan of Obama.
Johansson is a fan of Obama.

(CNN) — Scarlett Johansson, it appears, has a crush on Barack Obama.

The Golden Globe-nominated actress, who has long been an Obama supporter, told the Politico on Tuesday she often e-mails the Illinois senator and is amazed he takes the time to write back.

“You’d imagine that someone like the senator who is constantly traveling and constantly ‘on’ — how can he return these personal e-mails?” she told Politico. “But he does, and in his off-time I know he also calls people who have donated the minimum to thank them. Nobody sees it, nobody talks about it, but it’s incredible.”

“I feel like I’m supporting someone, and having a personal dialogue with them, and it’s amazing," Johansson said.

Specifically, Johansson said she e-mailed Obama following the last Democratic debate in Pennsylvania, after which the moderators were criticized for focusing on trivial issues instead of more pressing matters. The Hollywood starlet said she wrote Obama to congratulate him for "holding his ground."

Watch Obama criticize the final debate

Johansson, who has previously joked she is engaged to the presumptive Democratic nominee, is one of Obama's more vocal supporters in Hollywood, having hosted prominent fundraisers on his behalf and taking a starring role in the Emmy-nominated "Yes We Can" video that's racked up millions of hits on YouTube.

The 23-year-old actress told the Politico she first met Obama at a private fundraising event last year, but has since met up with him several times on the campaign trail. She says she is approaching campaigning for him the same way she campaigns for other causes she believes in.

"I’m hoping to raise awareness,” she said. “I’m not telling people who to vote for, and I don’t expect that if I did it would swing votes. At least, I hope not. What I want to do is raise awareness of Obama and his policies, and share my own story of how I became involved in his campaign. Perhaps, if they’re a fan, my story might entice them to learn or spark their interest some other way. If I can answer questions or direct people to a website where they can get more information, that’s how I can help.”

I emailed Sen. Obama last July. I'm an Illinois resident, and asked his position on upcoming legislation on a Medicare issue directly related to cancer treatment I'm receiving. Low and behold, 6 months later I received a response. However the response was a "canned letter" that could have been sent to any of his constituents, and did not address or even mention the issue. Why does he have time to communicate with movie stars that are non-residents of the state he represents, but not have time to discuss issues with his constituents? He was elected to represent the citizens of Illinois, but can't seem to do his job. Sen. Obama is collecting a salary but has failed to perform the duty for which he is paid. I don't think his dedication to duty meets the requirements of a head of state or a commander-in-chief.

I think is a rather refreshing short new peice. Something quite positive. I think further goes to show that Barack has some personality and is a people person. Barack really cares about the middle guy and everyone else!

Can't wait till he's the President and things start CHANGING!

Yea Barack!

P   June 11th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

I am one of Obama's actual senatorial constituents in Illinois. I have emailed him several times over issues. All I get back is some generic response generated by his staff. Is this actress getting more than that? I would hate to think that the Senator is actively making time to shmooze with Hollywood celebrities while essentially ignoring (Or at best patronizing) the citizens whom he represents. That doesn't seem to be much change from othr politicians.

David Minneapolis   June 11th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

In case you didn't notice, she helped to make a music video, "Yes we Can", with Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas. Check it out on youtube. It went viral, almost 8 million hits. This helped immensely with the youth vote, remember this is a political strategy, and a smart one for Obama to use. She is seen as a smart, successful female superstar. And like Leonardo, and Brad, she has consciousness and uses her fame to forward what she believes in, you know, artists realizing that they can do more than just make money and tabloids rich. It would be great if all 'stars' began to be involved in the change that their country so desperately needs right now. And it helps with former Hillary supporters, ones younger than Elizabeth Taylor anyway.

As opposed to the brilliant and insightful HRC supporters who are going to vote McCain out of spite? Well, to his credit, McCain finally did take his referring to HRC as a "female dog" off his web site so that must make him a gem of a catch.

Lynn   June 11th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Did you hear where Obama Supporter Roland Martin wants America to change voting until the weekend. In our state you can vote all day Tuesday from 6:30am till 7:30 pm. You can vote 2 weeks early at your local voters registration office and a couple of Saturdays included. That would give everyone time to vote. I guess since Obama is running the DNC now he wants control of the elections. Scary. He controlled the DNC meeting which took away the votes of MI and FL and gave him delegates when he was not on the ballot..

AND HOW THE HECK IS THIS NEWS???

This story is nothing more than a "CNN is in the tank for Obama" piece of fluff. What a joke.

I was hoping that CNN would try to keep their reporting, at least somewhat, neutral for the general election. With stories like this one and all the others like it on CNN as well as CNN.com I see that you've taken sides.

Shame on you CNN.

Bob from Illinois   June 11th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Obama has always been responsive to emails even before running for POTUS. I live in Illinois and although I didnt agree with his response to the question/comment I sent him, he did respond, and quickly I might add.

He does appear to believe in maintainig open communication with his constituents. So I have on occasion received a couple of emails directly from BO in response to specific questions, as a constituent in Illinois.

This is, I'd bet, a big difference between him and say a John Mccain or a lot of other politicians and I am not anyone of note. Just a teacher.

Look at these comments! Looks that the small provocation from CNN with this kind of information works! These sexual comments show that people miss this kind of events. No sexual information from White House for the last 8 years – another big failure of Bush administration.. Clinton was more productive in this area.. And keep in mind, if McCain win, no sexual information will be available at least for the next 4 years. Obama – 2008!

Just watched Obama blame the credit card companies for Americans being in debt. Didn't the card holder got to the store and make the purchase the he/she couldn't afford? Is it the Democratic Party's position that Americans should spend irresponsibly or that spending more than you can afford is Visa's or Mastercard's fault?

Worse, Mr. Obama blames McCain and "Washington" for allowing credit card issuers to have complicated contracts. Wasn't Mr. Obama in the United States Senate–in "Washington" while credit card contracts got longer and more complicated to understand?

He acts like he just got here from another planet and has discovered problems that he apparently missed while he was in the Senate.

Why doesn't the media, say CNN for example, challenge his approach
and this pretense that he hasn't been as much a part of the problems he now decries as the people he now blames?

Well, at least when this woman starts stalking Obama, he has a full squad of Secret Service to wrestle her to the ground before she tries to boil his rabbit.

Doesn't this woman realize she's probably actually communicating with one of Obama's staff? I get emails "from Obama" all the time. I'm not dumb enough to actually believe he's sitting down and writing them.

And CNN put this up as "news" because???????

I'm an Obama supporter, but can we keep the articles on this news website newsworthy? There's not much space here. Can we stay on topic and read about what Obama and McCain are talking about?

Why in the world is an actress with a tremendous amount of access to the media surprised that Obama would have emailed her back. what an idiot. He is definitely media savy. And no, I don't intend to vote for him. I just find it ironic that she is surprised. I did actually think she was halfway intelligent. Now I see that I was completely wrong.

Obama's Camelot   June 11th, 2008 12:26 pm ET

Obama has been playing up the Obama/Kennedy link since the onset.

So goody, now Obama has a link with an actress of the type similar to Marilyn Monroe (as a nod to the Kennedy/Monroe link). He has already linked himself with Ted kennedy and put Carolyn Kennedy into his VP search group. Michelle Obama wears purple a lot, with a nod to Camelot as well which has been noted by the media. This country hasn't gotten over the tragedy of the Kennedy years, and the dream is that it can be re-created somehow. Obama is keen on this sly advertising angle.

So wake up people….Obama is as much of an actor as anyone in Hollywood!!!

Sarah,

Clayton from Atlanta,

Thank you for sharing your feelings. I, like Sarah, have a huge crush on Barack, and like you and your wife, my husband and I are both huge fans, except I am the bigger fan!

I think it is just the way Barack speaks to everyone, on their level, he just inspires anyone who really takes the time to listen to him.

And no it is not a CRUSH in a romantic sense, it really is difficult to explain. It's more like you've known this person all your life, he just makes you feel that you really matter in the big scheme of things.

I am a 65 year old white Canadian, and I am simply amazed at the way Barack really inspires people of all ages, but the way that he has inspired the young people, and the way that he has moved them to come out and exercise their right, to participate in the election process is something that I will always marvel at!

Good luck folks we are rooting for you!

Suse   June 11th, 2008 12:16 pm ET

I really have to wonder why this even made the news. Also just because you are "famous" I don't think you should use the media to voice your opinion concerning personal preferences to the general public. There are people that will either buy/change their lifestyle just because their "famous idol" has said this or done that. Take this election for example. "Famous people" endorse this candidate or that candidate and people follow. But if Joe Brown was to get on TV or in the news and said I'm backing this candidate who would give a hoot? We are as a whole influenced by the media everyday in just about every aspect of our lives. But to me there are a few places namely religion and politics where our decisions should be our own and not someone "famous" making it for us.

WhoCares   June 11th, 2008 12:15 pm ET

Is this news? Some B-list actress whose work is mediocre at best with a name and Obama emails her, and she goes public with it? Does pandering to the public, and clogging up our eyes, know no limits? What next? A published email with Jane Fonda and Tom Hanks and then Sinbad and Obama starring in a comedy about two men searching for that last undereducated white blue collar voter in the Ozarks whose ballot will decide who's the next president of the United States?

Swing Voter in Virginia   June 11th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

I think a lot of people are missing the point in this one. I think the point of this article is to prove that Obama is an ordinary guy that is decent at his core. I think it is great to have a President that doesn't think he is almighty and too good to reach out to his supporters.

And my goodness there are A LOT of haters on today. I want to say to all of the Hillary democrates that keep threatening to vote for McCain…Do you really think you are hurting Obama? The Obama's are successful, rich and have a good life. Yes they will be disappointed if they lose but at the end of the day they will still be successful and rich. The question is…will you?

I am a 29 year old, African-American lawyer. The economy sucks BUT I am doing well, thank God. Most Obama-voters make over 50K a year, most Hillary voters do not. Hillary voters you all will be screwed more than anyone else if McCain gets elected. Have you really listened to McCain's economic plan? He wants to continue to provide tax breaks for corporations and continue to cut them breaks even though they are sending jobs over seas. THAT MAKES NO SENSE.

I am a lawyer and yes I want Obama to win, but I am a professional so my job is safe. But all you blue-collar democrates that are voting for McCAin because you are mad that Hillary didn't win, you are basically voting to lose your job. Please educate yourself before you make a silly, emotional decision!

Brad in Dixon, CA   June 11th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

What a load.

She truly is a great actress, and now, a fantastic liar.

A Wang   June 11th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

We are not electing a Oscar winner here. I have always felt his campaign is more about himself than this country. Nice does not make him a good president. Obama is going to spend more time worrying about his fans than the poeple in America.

Syd   June 11th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

CNN, the primary is over! Get over it! I am sure Obama and Michelle has called and e-mailed ordinary, hard working voters, so why is this making the six o'clock new?

58 yr old white guy   June 11th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

Kevin in Bennington, NE   June 11th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Let's see here, young, beautiful, rich, supports his campaign, donates to his campaign…….. OK, so Obama has enough common sense to keep in touch with someone like that, woo hoo, not news worthy. Of course he should, she is out in Hollywood where the hills are loaded with rich liberals to support his campaign.

What gets me is she is amazed that he calls her back. Shows a little lack of common sense on someone's part.

catjax   June 11th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

If this was Bill Clinton, they would say he is having an affair and blow it out of proportion.. only shows the double standard..Who knows? Obama could be sleazy too, and have something under his sleeve…I guess Michelle got him by the neck. A lot of people can play this little game that they had on the Clintons for years.

Truth Be Told   June 11th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Oh wait, I've mistaken a news network for a celebrity gossip forum again!

CNN, why are you waisting time reporting this? Where are the extensive articles about Kucinich introducing 35 articles of impeachment against Bush yesterday?

I'm ashamed of our country and our people. When did everyone turn into a bunch of gossiping, petty nincompoops? Lets get back to making this country as great as it's supposed to be people.

amazed   June 11th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

I'm amazed she believes that it is actually him returning her emails…

Angry American   June 11th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

Of course he e-mails her back. She is a movie star – BUT I would put money on the fact that he probably does not return e-mails OR phone calls to the "average Joe" who he supposedly "cares" so much about. He's corporate – JUST like Scarlett. And for that matter, just like McCain.

Barry   June 11th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

I've read most of the posts, and yet haven't seen anyone focus on what she also said:
"..and in his off-time I know he also calls people who have donated the minimum to thank them. Nobody sees it, nobody talks about it, but it’s incredible.”

It's only BIG news because she's a Hollywood star and the MSM wants to make a big deal out of it. I mean, who'd ever believe it if the MSM tried to spin a "relationship' about him calling "Ethel" from central NC to thank her for her support.

mabus   June 11th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

It turns out that Barack Obama's Chicago zip code is 60606 – the sign of the beast. This revelation raises an interesting question:
If Obama is exposed as the Antichrist, do you think it will hurt his presidential chances?

Maybe he's not as busy as he wants us to believe he is.

kypar   June 11th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

Who cares what Scarlett thinks (and do you really think Obama wrote the response himself or was it an aid?)
Scarlett is hot but she's an actress and CNN using her story as an "endorsement" of a candidate is wrong, regardless of who it is.

Moderate Dems are voting McCain in Nov, plain and simple….

Ted Strickland and the moderate dem congressman from OK are distancing themselves from Obama… I love it…

I guess you Obama supporters are going to be stuck with Chris Dodd for you VP choice, since he is probably going to be the only one stupid enough to take the spot.

Then, McCain will pick Bobby Jindal from LA as his running mate. Bobby Jindal will show that you can be a person of color in this country and be a true patriot…. Unlike Mr. Obama who aligns himselft with Anti-American and Anti-Jewish haters.

OHHHH Obama talks to me, it means that someone so important must be so wonderful and that makes me "important." The Cult of Obama…the pontifications and platitudes never end, and yet ask some of the young folks out there while they are voting ofr him, all they can reiterate is something pablum "esques." " He will bring change," they gush. Like what kind of "change?" Well like you know, change the "system?" You mean the "system" he is a part of, with a party that he is supportd by and now will lead apparently. Why in the world would we care what some self absorbed "Hollywood " type thinks is beyond me. But again, we see the Clinton-esque fascination with style over substance. The only thing that will change is how wvery aspect of our society will be forced to pay more taxes to this over bloated monster call the United States Federal Governent, and aquiesence to our enemies, more socialistic drivel from the global warming heretics, and judicail nominess that are chosen by the fact they will continue to advocate the slauhgter of the unborn, and the radical homosexual movement finding a way to…ahem…insert there perverse lifestyle into every aspect of our society and to preach or mention that his is unnatural coould eventually be described as hate speech. You want anarchy and America, choose this man, and his godless beleif system will defile us more thatn Clinton's ever could have.

I believe he threw her under the bus too.

I don't understand why if I Choose not to vote for Obama, that makes me a racist? That Obama supporters, is why you are pissing off the former Clinton supporters. I am a Democrat, who supported Clinton however, for the good of the Country, NOT THE PARTY, I will vote Democrat. I could care less if the Democratic Nominee was a Blind, Deaf, Pink He/She, as long as it is a Democrat. Well, Except for Scary Pelosi, then I would stay home. She is too much for me.

T.A. O'Neil   June 11th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

P.S. Anyone over there in the political ticker world paying attention to how many of us repeatedly as this question?

This is one of the reasons I didn't vote for Obama. He's running for President of the United States – not the winner of American Idol. I think all of this "hollywood hype" about him is disturbing. And, I think it is a double-edged sword.

Matthew   June 11th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Seriously CNN? A crush story?

Rob   June 11th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

I think she was trying to express approval and admiration.

Obama supporters: Please try to be kinder on these blogs. We can win on the issues without being mean. That is what Barack wants from us. He does not get down and roll in the mud and neither should we. I know, it is really tempting but please don't. It makes us all look bad.

The "Movement" has people from all walks of life who feel we drastically need CHANGE. Senator Obama relates to the poor and the rich, and millions of us that are in-between. Once people stop and LISTEN to his message, and the HRC supporters have time to heal and realize what this election menas to THEM- I believe that Senator Obama will become President Obama in November!

DemtoMcCain   June 11th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

She's as dumb as a brick.

Lauren   June 11th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

She never actually said she had a crush on him. Their actions were completely platonic, and I've heard other stories about Barack Obama taking the time to talk to people and respond to their needs, so this is not an isolated situation. So frankly, I think it's rather silly that CNN is trying to turn this into a crush.

Why???   June 11th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

How low will the Media go that we are asking to see birth certificates?

How much longer will we continue to go down this path? This year has truly brought out the best in all of us. This reminds me of the time when God sent Moses on his quest and Moses asked who shall I say sent me? The Lord spoke and said tell them “I am who I say I am? And then Moses would have replied and said “But my Lord, where is your birth certificate?

Please give me a break,

What about the high gas prices?
What about the high home foreclosures?
What about the high unemployment rate?
What about the high rate of businesses closing their door and giving pink slips?
What about the high food costs?
What about the funding for higher education?
What about the high cost of health care?
What about?????etc

We should hold the Media response for all our headaches and pains. We should call the Media a Man-Evil-Den-In-American.

Jack   June 11th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

I am for Obama all the way but this story bothers me way more than Rev. Wright and Resko put together. I can't stand the idea of Actors and Actesses having abilities to contact elected officials more than the average citizen. It's what I couldn't stand about the Clintons. I am for Obama because I want him to give the government back to the average american not lobbyist and for sure not hollywood.

Let's not trash her … It's CNN and the "provocative sound bite" culture that should be the focus of our indignation.

It's not odd that a younger voter age 23 is behind Obama. Some of them are going to be female. Some of those are going to be pretty. Some of those further are going to be blond.

He didn't only answer her e-mails but others from the general public as well.

If we as a country are going to react to sliced and diced stories like this, the news media will always be able to give us just enough to titilate puritan minds and take the focus off of what truly matters …

Don't fall for the Okie-Doke!

Scarlett,

She calls you, because you are Scarlett Johansson.

Though besides having much, much, much more money than I, I do not think you are better or worse than I as a person; however, I honestly do not think Barack Obama would call me.

Sorry to burst your bubble…but the fact that you, celebrities, due to your work and fame, get "freebies" when you actually have the money to buy them, let us know how weird things work…Obama calls you and even more, knowing like we all know that you have a crush on him, but he won't call us…..not that I care about it…I was all the way for Hillary Clinton because of her and yes, because of her husband, because he was one of the best presidents this country has had.

OK CNN> This is somehow news? Gas is out of control, people can't afford food, floods are flooding in USA, Floods in China and people can't afford their mortgages and you care about this Blonde WHY?

Waste of Space…….Not Newsworthy, unless you are attempting to say he is interested? Nah, Michelle would tear her apart….

Dan , TX   June 11th, 2008 11:57 am ET

When you have a supporter that the world apparently thinks is really important – important enough for CNN to pay attention. Then I think it is reasonable to email that supporter to thank them for their support, don't you. The reason Obama emailed her is because, according to CNN, she can influence thousands of people to vote for Obama. People who admire her, and again, CNN wouldn't post this if many people didn't admire her, will be given positive feelings for Obama. I don't think it makes anyone vote for Obama, but it makes them listen. What is clear is the more you understand about Obama and learn about his policies, the more people tend to support him.

On the other hand, McCain is promising us things he doesn’t have, or can’t control. He sounds so ridiculous talking, that many people are turning off the TV saying, “You got to be kidding”.
McCain is turning the election campaign into a comedy. The day of voting I have two options.
Vote for Barack Obama, or Go Fishing.

I totally agree with AVA.
The primaries should happen exactly like the general election. Single day primaries with winner takes all for states. And no election in Peurto Rico, Guam etc.. They do not count so why have their influence?

I am sure Hillary would have benefited from the above format but I am glad that Obama won. He is a better politician. Hillary would have a definite big role in his government.

Terrence (Winston Salem, NC)   June 11th, 2008 11:57 am ET

People,

CNN used the "crush" as a tagline. This isn't the views of SJ. But I think it's news worthy in the fact that we get a glimpse of Obama's humanity. When you get to see the man when he's not in front of a camera, you get to see a bit of where his integrity lies. Scarlett is just trying to let people know that Obama's not phony; that he truly appreciates the support of his American supporters.

Carol   June 11th, 2008 11:57 am ET

Yes, I am very concerned about Scarlett and JLo's views about the election ahead. I would also like to hear their solutions to the mortgage mess, the war, health care, etc., etc. If JLo says it – it's good enough for me.

Why do you always publish these stupid stories about stupid people? Isn't CNN supposed to be a news organization? How many idiot headlines have you run about Angelina Jolie ? Get a clue – WE DON'T CARE!!!

If we want this kind of crap, we will get on TMZ.

Olivia   June 11th, 2008 11:57 am ET

A very talented actress but it seems she has no common sense.
Obama is in the publics' eye..married with 2 young daughters.
If he's aware of her infatuation then he should not even innocently encourage her by personal communication. basic psychology.

I thought the Obama girl was bad enough…. half naked, shaking her tail feathers…more burlesque than political.

James, Pennsylvania   June 11th, 2008 11:56 am ET

Voting Obama   June 11th, 2008 11:56 am ET

Obama reaches out to everyone. I love this man! He has my vote coming November. People who criticize his racists to me and it is sad how comes into play. All you can do is pray for the small minded ignorant people. He didn't do anything wrong. He won fair and square.

All I can say is Obama 2008! I love you Obama! GOD bless you and your family!

George   June 11th, 2008 11:56 am ET

This could be such a great forum for serious discussion if only CNN wasn't more interested in sensational nonsense, juvenile humor and benignly trying to influence public opinion. Your moderators need to be more objective and stop trying to suppress free speech when it differs from their political idealogy.

@ matt NY lol

Gregory Watson Morgan   June 11th, 2008 11:55 am ET

I change my mind. If I was running for president I would sit around and spend two to three hours a day writing back to everybody that I could and give the impression that everybody's opinion and idea counts and means something to me. That is exactly how we should run this country. Why don't we just apply the town hall meeting format to decide all national issues? Let everyone vote on everything and express their uneducated opinion on everything. Who needs a Legislative branch or even Executive branch. We'll just text our messages to the town hall meeting and then allow everyone to read their opinions and then have a vote on it. Or just text message votes like American Idol. That is the way to go.

Wooptie Doo!!! I get emails from Obama all the time and he calls me by my first name….. You didn't report that CNN….. I am just as an important Obama supporter as Scarlet…. let's be fair….

Sheri   June 11th, 2008 11:54 am ET

Who cares who Scarlett Johanson supports or emails?????

This isn't news.

S.M   June 11th, 2008 11:54 am ET

Yes, the moderators were really bias towards Obama. The questions that they were asking him were a waste of time and completely bias. They spent the first hour attacking Obama about issues that didn't have anything to do with what we as Americans are concerned about.

Nancy   June 11th, 2008 11:54 am ET

This is so sad! As one of Senator Obama's constituents in Illinois I never got so much as a return call or email from his senate offices regarding one of his amendments. I was always told they were too busy and he was campaigning for president. I finally had to go through Senator Durbin's office who gave me a contact person in Senator Obama's office. Finally, I received a call from staff. I guess I had to have clout for an Obama staff member to return a call and answer my question on an amendment Senator Obama had introduced. So Scarlett Johansen is a very lucky lady!

SDB   June 11th, 2008 11:54 am ET

So?

Daniel   June 11th, 2008 11:54 am ET

I also donated the minimum amount to Hillary Clinton and I also received more than one email back from her thanking me to take the time to support her campaign. Would this even be a story if this actress wasn't a celebrity? Not being rude, just asking…

Alexis   June 11th, 2008 11:54 am ET

Good for you Obama, I believe he needs those liitle distractions some time to time, cause it's a lot for one person to focus on at the same time….. To tell you the I'm a lttle jalous that Scarlet has a crush On Obama but for my next President I'll accept anything, as long as it's good for him. Cause the door he just opened for me and more importantly for my kids, I will never be able to repay him for that. And while I'm here I want to take the time to thank Hillary for her hard work too.

Ive heard a lot of people suggest Obama isnt a "quick thinker" and better at reading from a script…

consider this:

Sometimes the inability to speak quickly is a cue to someone's ability to think deeply.

election watcher   June 11th, 2008 11:50 am ET

This is a big a non-story as McCain saying 'beer' instead of 'bill'.
Polls are close. People aren't sure if they want to gamble on McCain's age or Obama's lack of experience, so we get this idiotic politics of the stars nonsense instead of real reporting. Thanks for a lot of nothing CNN.

jason   June 11th, 2008 11:50 am ET

i have a crush on Scarlett. I'm a cause she should believe in. (O yeah, and Obama MUST win in November!)

CNN give us real NEWS!!!!!!!

Tina   June 11th, 2008 11:49 am ET

The caption, as most captions these days, completely misses the mark.

From reading the article, I wouldn't say that Johannson has a crush on Obama. The only thing I can conclude is that she supports Obama and is doing what she can for his campaign and she is impressed with his style of doing things. She is trying to raise awareness of him and his campaign, and it seems she is doing it without arrogance, without pushiness, and without coming off as an elitist.

Te HE HE HE   June 11th, 2008 11:49 am ET

So… Obama IS being installed by celebrities and the media, right?

Get over the adulation and start looking at things with some objectivity.

Andy J, NY   June 11th, 2008 11:49 am ET

Who cares if an actor supports Obama? Are they smarter than the vast majority of people? No, they are more hypocritical than the majority of people.

Many actors who obtain success come from modest backgrounds and have lived the american dream of making a ton of money through talent and hard work. It is a little shocking and hypocritical that they then support socialist ideas based up the premise that people, in general, are too stupid to make it on their own.

Bums.

Danno   June 11th, 2008 11:49 am ET

Probably has something to do with the fact that she is Scarlett Johansson and she is gorgeous. Michelle better keep a tight leash on her liberal husband before it gets out of hand.

Funny, I haven't heard of any "commoners" commenting about Obama personally responding to their emails. Anyone out there?

Damon   June 11th, 2008 11:48 am ET

He doesn't just do it for "stars". My friend works for Northwest airlines and she emailed him recently about a layoffs and a strike and he wrote her back pretty promply.

He's a genuine guy…that's why he'll always have my vote.

sacto joe   June 11th, 2008 11:48 am ET

The filth and trash this little piece has brought forth on this forum are telling, to say the least. It's about time we got a little light and air to the running sore that is racism in this country.

If he accomplishes nothing else, Senator Obama has already accomplished this, big time!

Theresa in Georgia   June 11th, 2008 11:48 am ET

I won't vote for him because he is a SOCIALIST.

Race has nothing to do with it, i don't feel guilty for not voting for a black, i don't feel guilty for slavery, and i think you are an idiot for saying that people won't vote for Obama because he is black and they are racists. Have a back bone, you little rodent.

Right wing conservatives, aka racists are so pathetic. They're born with their minds made up. They'll vote for a 71 year old man that had barely any competition to take his party's nomination and still can't unite the party behind him, over anyone that instills them with fear.

The Clear Thinking Indepedent   June 11th, 2008 11:43 am ET

On the Wednesday, June 11, 2008

When asked about his energy plan and any relief that he could bring Americans from the rising price of gasoline before before the election, Senator McCain said,

We need alternate energy solutions. We need new battery technology that would allow a car to travel 100 miles.

When the interviewer expressed skepticism that battery technology was likely to advance it that period of time, Mr. McCain stayed on point and did not waver.

I have a couple of problems with this.

The 1st is, we already have batteries that meet his threshold; he is uninformed / out of touch.

The 2nd is that, when someone tried to point out the flaw in his position, instead of reconsidering, he " stayed the course".

WAKE UP   June 11th, 2008 11:43 am ET

yuck. she is SO overrated. i dont understand why everyone thinks she's so hot.

Chipster   June 11th, 2008 11:42 am ET

Grow up! I can't believe a grown woman would admit something so silly.

A Crush? What? Are you in junior high? Do you agree with him on the issues? Do you care about the disaster that the Republicans have made for our country? That's how I know that the folks who say they supported Clinton but plan to vote for McCain are Republicans in disguise. Anyone who cares about our country enough to support Clinton would never, ever vote for McCain. I don't care how disappointed I am (and I am), the welfare of the nation comes first. Democrats have to gain control to stop this destruction.

Robert Plano, TX   June 11th, 2008 11:42 am ET

Scarlett Johanson is hot. Is there a correlation between hot girls attraction for a presidential candidate and probability of winning the general election?

alda   June 11th, 2008 11:42 am ET

I wonder how much she will still like after he raises her taxes? Maybe she is rich enough not to care, like a lot of the Hollywood do-gooders. For us normal folks, if we earn a dollar but get to keep only 60 cents (or less) in change after Obama raises our taxes, that is NOT change I can believe in.

any lady may have a secret crush on Obama. Just a tiny little crush maybe?

Patty Don't   June 11th, 2008 11:42 am ET

I don't understand why everyone is so cynical about celebrities making their politcal views known. For the most part they are citizens of the USA also. As such i think its very responsible of them to have an interest in politics and other causes that can benefit the nation and the world in general.

As much as there is a celebrity obsession in this country, there is also the anti-celebrity obsession. Folks, not everyone is a waste of life like Paris Hilton and some can actually think for themselves and make informed decisions (shocking, i know).

Well...   June 11th, 2008 11:42 am ET

CNN… this is my last post…. I'm convinced most Obama supporters are Communists and socialists, so I'm done talking with them…

As a whole, they bring no discussion to the board and only bash anyone not believing the way they do…

it's like the George W. Bush followers, but on the other side of the political spectrum… apparently, it's not that they are upset at Bush, it's just they are upset it's not a bad leader following their line of thought…

it all makes me sick… i'm done with politics and I will only vote Libertarian from this point…

goodbye, America, and have fun when you hit bottom, because you'll bring the world down with you.

She may be an okay looking girl, but there is nothing like my African American women. Look at the booty on Michelle Obama, You rarely see that type of loveliness on a European American woman. But the moral of the story everyone has their idea of beauty. And both are very attractive women in their own right!

Bill   June 11th, 2008 11:40 am ET

Obama is a very caring, decent person. That's why he called her and others as well. As a precinct captain in Iowa, I was on several conference calls with him. He is connected to THE PEOPLE, as opposed to sucking up to the mega-corporations. He cares what PEOPLE think.

Obama '08 YES WE CAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

juan R   June 11th, 2008 11:39 am ET

That's a good idea but he can take a break but not a long one McCain has been out there longer than he has so he had that lead on getting people to know him now Obama needs the rest cause he had a huge hard primary race and he should be exhausted but if he is tired and if he realy need that break and if he doesn't take it it must be cause he really cares about being president and change the way things are done in the white house and so forth. I believe that he is human and must rest for his mental and physical health but he must first and most be be strong and my friends that faith that he has shown those values and the believe in that together as a nation we can make things better lets not criticize this man but unite with him on this battle against corruption and then we all can take a break yes then we can rest and relax god bless you all. this is for the take a break blog…

Oh and for the fool up there who claims it was done to Bill by Vanity Fair? Bill Clinton has a HISTORY of infidelity, Barack does NOT. The fact that Bill got so mad means it must have been true. Thanks Scott, I'm here is Cincinnati – I didn't know stupidity was so close to home!

I love it when he emails me to thank me for my support.

Gregory Watson Morgan   June 11th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Why should we report that some young Hollywood star has a "crush" on Obama. Do we really believe that Obama writes back to her? I suppose since she is a celebrity and him writing back might make it into an article than he would have an incentive to write her back just for the publicity. But do you really think Obama has time to write back every or even a small percentage of the people that contact him? Does the president have time to write back to everybody that has a crush on him and wants to praise him for "holding his ground" and not wavering on values that he holds true?

This article implies that young Hollywood stars couldn't possibly have a crush on the 71 year old McCain since he is too old and out of touch and not cool.

Brett from Austin, TX   June 11th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Who the hell cares? Haha. The stupidest thing I have ever heard.

Well...   June 11th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Some of you guys are taking this article too seriously. CNN is as much News as it's entertainment that's been known for a while now. If you're looking for starch, dry, and self-important go read The New Yorker.

She's awesome !!

Obama is a different kind of politician. He has a good heart and brilliant mind. Very rare these days for a politician to have both those qualities.
He will be one of best leaders we will ever see. Hope the American people can put their ideological biases and vote for someone who can truly bring us all out of the 20th century.

Karrah   June 11th, 2008 11:34 am ET

That is disrespectful to his marriage. Hollywood actresses think they can say and do anything. It's sickening. Back off!!!

Senator Obama, do not get caught up in the celebrity, like one Bill Clinton.

And don't start hanging out with celebs, it makes the ordinary people feel ignored.

Bottom line is Senator Obama is a down to earth guy. We need people like him in Washington instead of all the Old corrupt folks there right now who would like to keep on doing the same on thing.

TIME FOR WASHINGTON TO CHANGE THE WAY IT"S BEEN DOING BUSINESS. AND THE ONLY WAY THAT"S GOING TO HAPPEN IS BY VOTING FOR OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT.

Veteran For Obama:

Dude, you really need to come up with a better name than 'Clintonites'. LOL

Obamabot was very original and true.

It's like something out of a horror flick…zombies walking with their hands out saying over and over "Yes we can".

What if?:

Your racist comment is unjustified. The 90% of the black vote went to Obama – are they racist because the didn't vote Hillary? I don't think so…but when the roles are reversed you play that card.

Obama attended a radical anti-white church for 20 years, but he didn't know they were anit-white…right. It didn't affect his zombie base one bit.
Now, if Hillary attended a KKK church (god forbid) for 20 years, then said she didn't realize it's message was a negative one, she would be been pulled over the coals – no excuse would be acceptable and I would be one not to accept it. There would be riots on the streets. Believe me.

Racism is a part of this race but you need to point your finger in another direction.

I was standing in line waiting to use the ATM machine in my bank's lobby on Christmas Eve 07 and this man walks in with a baseball hat on and jogging suit. As I and the lady in front of me did a double take, he simply got in line behind me. He wished us Merry Christmas and the lady in front of me turned around and said "I'm going to vote for you". Although, he was behind us, when the machine became available we told him to go ahead of us. He asked "Are you sure?' We told him to go ahead becasue he was probably in a hurry.

On this chance path-crossing with Senator Obama, I found him to be very nice and considerate. It was Christmas Eve and everybody in there was probably in a hurry.

How pathetic that this is part of our political discourse.

Unfortunately, it is, both explicitly and implicitly.

Roland Martin & Jeff Toobin still do!

It's obvious. It's pathetic.

Oh, God, CNN, ENOUGH ALREADY with your hero-worship of your God Obama. I am SO sick of Obama! I can't even stand to look at his face or listen to his voice anymore – exactly the same way I feel about Bush.

I don't watch you guys in the morning anymore except for Lou Dobbs' reruns (I get up very early) – he's great and the only unObiased reporter ON CNN. Other than that, I watch Fox in the morning.

I REFUSE to watch you repeat your hatchet job on McCain that you did on Hillary. I wonder how long it will be before you take some innocent remark of McCain's and start calling him a racist. I bet not long.

Why don't you do a story on how Oblahblah is scared to death of town hall meetings with McCain since the ONLY thing HE'S good at is reading a prewritten speech.

I wonder why CNN doesn't report on the fact that Oblahblah is scared to do a town hall meeting because the ONLY thing he's good at is reading a prepared speech.

Thats one thing you have to respect about McCane he is better off the cuff and when it comes from the heart…….Obama is better at the wroten word and what others tell him to say you can see that by how he has others searching for his best VP. true they both have staff proubly checking the options and it is a marrage that has no divorse but showing that doesnt seem to be very presidental. also we must remember there are no teleprompters on foriegn affair meetings.
they both have pros and cons I just hope America isnt getting coned.

I suspect many young women and old women have a crush on Obama. I am an older woman, and wouldn't go as far as to say I have a crush on him, but find much to admire. Beyond that, what is wrong with having a good looking young President. Kennedy was younger when he was nominated, and I believe Clinton was in his mid forties also.

The senator is young at heart.
He has been doing this all his life, helping people, listening to people and reaching out to people.

We have in our hands a superb personality who wants to change Washington and bring back this country to where it belongs.
"THE SUPERPOWER"

We have to stand behind him no matter what happens. We the people need to stand behind him, likewise the democratic party. Whether we are conservative or liberal democrats, we need to put aside our differences and look at the similarities.
We need to support our party, be it a white or black person and no matter our race or culture, divided we fall and united we stand.

WE MUST UNITE AND BE IN ONE ACCORD.
I APPEAL TO ALL DEMOCRATS,YOUNG ,OLD, CONSERVATIVE OR LIBERAL.

We must take back our country and we must take back the white house.

We cannot afford another 4 years of Bush administration, which Mccain-Bush will carry on.

WE CAN'T LET THIS HAPPEND TO OUR DEAR COUNTRY.

Scott, Newport KY   June 11th, 2008 11:13 am ET

Obama takes the time to personally return email messages from pretty young starlets. The next thing we know, she'll be buying him ties and showing him her thong underwear.

Axis of Evil - OBAMA   June 11th, 2008 11:13 am ET

Just as long as she stops singing, I dont care whats he does.

young obama supporter   June 11th, 2008 11:12 am ET

a woman supporting obama now all the hillary supporters can stop whining on the blogs it's really getting old. all those supporters wasn't real democrats who are voting for McCain. When you see your rights get taken from you when it comes to abortion you'll feel stupid for voting for him.

kingsley   June 11th, 2008 11:11 am ET

This is news worthy, and hope pundits and the idiots at fox news don't spin it in any other way than what it is

Clayton from Atlanta   June 11th, 2008 11:11 am ET

My wife is also a big fan. I'm a bigger fan…

As far as a crush, let's not get a rumor started…

john   June 11th, 2008 11:11 am ET

When I read this I thought to myself : here we go again with the stereotypical black male sexual prowness and its racist overtones.
Shame on you. It won't work. Give it up right now. Report on substantiative stories rather than tabloid sensationalism.

Sarah   June 11th, 2008 11:11 am ET

I have a crush on him too!!

Agnostic Democrat   June 11th, 2008 11:11 am ET

Just make sure Slick Willy doesn't get her Email or meet up with her or Hillary will suffer another defeat. Hillary will have to keep Bill's leash very short, and Mr. Obama will need to dispatch him to the most remote areas to campaign on his behalf. No mixin' it up with starlets and Bill.

rumpusgoopus   June 11th, 2008 11:11 am ET

It's amazing how easy it is to predict what the comments will be like to this post.

Hill Supporter   June 11th, 2008 11:11 am ET

As to all of the young women that voted for Obama, you will find that a hip, good-looking black man does not necessary translate to an experienced and electable candidate as Ms. Clinton would have been and still could be. Yes, I believe, women can sometimes forget what they are voting for. I remember when I was considerably younger and looked at John Kennedy with no real knowledge or understanding of what he or the Democratic party stood for, just that he looked good, gave nice speeches and pays attention to blondes, e.g., Scarlett Johansson; sound familiar?

TXBad1   June 11th, 2008 11:11 am ET

a Fatal attraction in the works, Obama, dude i'm not voting for you but stay away from that one!

Mark Cary, NC   June 11th, 2008 11:11 am ET

WHO CARES!!??!!

Alizabeth   June 11th, 2008 11:10 am ET

I crinch everytime a celebrity talk about our candidates, especially young stars. Not to mention what some of the gutter media would make of this story, perhaps using old days of JFK and Monroe as an anology. However, Scarlette is engaged to be married and an informed voter working for her candidate and hopefully does her own work without media hoohaha.

Banko   June 11th, 2008 11:10 am ET

Obama is intouch with small and big donors. He really cares. This guy is the real deal.

scott   June 11th, 2008 11:10 am ET

this is the big problem with this campain it is about romance and not brains, the bobots claim its about brains but the more you see the more it seems its just about Romance with the canadate. I know a few people that feel like they had a bad one night stand after super tuesday and felt alittle remorce. HOPE they did the wright thing…….

Karen   June 11th, 2008 11:09 am ET

Watch out Obama-girl, Scarlett has got the "looks", the fame and the fortune!

Matt--Nebraska   June 11th, 2008 11:09 am ET

Gawd.

Another fluff press piece for Obama.

Do you people have no pride?

I hope and pray there are enough people in America that are smart enough to see through Obama's lies.

vic nashville,Tn   June 11th, 2008 11:08 am ET

Political groupie

Deborah   June 11th, 2008 11:07 am ET

Oh please. Of course he's going to communicate with the lovely Scarlett Johansson. And she thinks it's because he communicates with everyone! Give me a break. He ignores people all the time. I've seen it and I've read about it on blogs. He just knows how to play the media game and boy does he have you guys snowed.

gurarro   June 11th, 2008 11:07 am ET

Next….

Matt   June 11th, 2008 11:07 am ET

As an Illinois resident I know how he has time to do these things – by not doing the job he was elected for.

Eddie   June 11th, 2008 11:06 am ET

Yeah, she emails me too

Robert   June 11th, 2008 11:06 am ET

Few men wouldn't respond if Scarlett Johansson emailed them :)

john williams san diego, ca.   June 11th, 2008 11:06 am ET

just one more rocket scientist voting for Obama.

insanity   June 11th, 2008 11:06 am ET

Obama is a different kind of politician. He has a good heart and brilliant mind. Very rare these days for a politician to have both those qualities.
He will be one of best leaders we will ever see. Hope the American people can put their ideological biases and vote for someone who can truly bring us all out of the 20th century.

Independent for Obama   June 11th, 2008 11:06 am ET

Not news. Although it is nice that Obama calls supporters in his free time – that is pretty cool.

martin   June 11th, 2008 11:06 am ET

nice woman.

New Day   June 11th, 2008 11:06 am ET

gary   June 11th, 2008 11:05 am ET

Zina   June 11th, 2008 11:05 am ET

Can we please talk about news, and not celebrities?

Thanks!

Robert in Toronto,ON   June 11th, 2008 11:04 am ET

While I appreciate Johansson's support, this is not newsworthy.

On a side note – Scarlett Johansson is overrated. Jessica Alba has her beat hands downs.

Caryn, WDC   June 11th, 2008 11:04 am ET

??????

Women for Obama   June 11th, 2008 11:04 am ET

She's a smart young lady.

She knows that McCain will work to outlaw abortion.

Dems   June 11th, 2008 11:04 am ET

This woman is a moron. To be surprised that Obama (or actually a campaign intern) takes the time to respond to an email from a Hollywood star is amazing and shows you how dumb she is.

She probably is hoping for a "private tour" once he's elected.

Dope.

McCain '08!

Franky   June 11th, 2008 11:03 am ET

Grrrrrrr!!! LOL!!!

oil rules   June 11th, 2008 11:03 am ET
