“He was hard but he was always fair. We miss him," McCain said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. And we know that Tim Russert leaves a legacy of the highest level of integrity, of the highest level of journalism, and we miss him and we'll miss him a lot. Again he was hard, he was fair, he was at the top of his profession. He loved his country. He loved the Buffalo Bills and most of all he loved his family.”
In Columbus, Ohio, Obama said Russert was "one of the finest men I knew."

"I’ve known Tim Russert since I first spoke at the convention in 2004. He's somebody who overtime I came to consider not only a journalist but a friend," Obama said. "There wasn’t a better interviewer in TV, not a more thoughtful analyst of our politics, and he was also one of the finest men I knew. Somebody who cared about America, cared about the issues, cared about family.
"I am grief stricken with the loss and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family. And I hope that even though Tim is irreplaceable that the standard that he set in his professional life and his family life are standards that we all carry with us in our own lives," he also said.

For Tim Russert – In Memoriam:
"A large personality is built on such a structure that we scarcely realize its dimensions while it is being built; it keeps up its monstrous development, flinging out as many unaccountable commitments as the limbs on an octopus, growing until we scarcely recognize its shadows—so large it has become beyond that of ordinary people. Except we can recognize the dimensions of the shadow in the horizontal twilight of the coffin."
— F. Scott Fitzgerald

I am shocked and saddened to hear such news about Tim. He was such a likable guy and he was so even handed with his interviews and reporting. He'll be greatly missed.
Rest in Peace. Speechless as I am, that all I can say. You will be deeply miss. One
He tried to make this a better world and almost succeeded. We all need to try and be more like him and how disrespectful of the people who chose to make nasty remarks on a site like this. Russert was a truly respected and honest hardworking journalist. God bless him. With his faith there is no doubt where he's at.
Irreplaceable loss. –One of the fairest, most objective journalists of our time. Tim Russert always gave viewers the facts. My favorite moments are when he would use the Interviewee’s very words –an opportunity for them to speak the truth to viewers. These were not ‘gotcha’ moments neither could the Interviewee take the “out of context” defense, because Tim quoted quite a bit of the Interviewee’s words –verbatim.
Meet the Press will not be the same without Tim Russert.
–With deepest sympathy my sincere condolences to the Russert family and NBC/MSNBC.
Regardless of what one might think of his journalism or politics, he'll be greatly missed, particularly by those of us who are loyal and native Buffalonians (and fellow Canisius High School graduates).
reast in peace tim, you will be missed

We have lost a great man, and great news professional. Senators Obama and MCain have lost a voice of reason as they fight it out for the Presidency; they both said it: we are saddened by his loss. Lets put politics aside for a day and give thanks that we had Tim with us for so long.
