Many countries thing U.S. foreign policy will improve with Obama as President.

(CNN)—Despite increasing economic concerns and an on-going war in Iraq, a new international poll finds a widespread belief in many countries that United States foreign policy “will change for the better" once a new administration is sworn into office, particularly if Sen. Barack Obama is elected president.

The international poll conducted by Pew Research of more than 24,000 people in 24 countries found people who have been following the U.S. elections feel more confident Obama “will do the right thing,” with regards to foreign relations than John McCain.

McCain has lower ratings than Obama in every country surveyed except the U.S., where the two presumptive nominees run neck and neck.

Obama’s advantage over McCain is enormous particularly in France, Germany, and Australia, where the Illinois senator leads McCain by up to 51 percentage points.

Overall, there is little confidence in the United States in general among those surveyed in the Middle Eastern countries of Pakistan and Jordan. McCain has a confidence rating of 6 percent in Pakistan, while Obama garners 10 percent. “In Jordan and Egypt, more people who are following the election say they expect new leadership to change U.S. foreign policy for the worse than say they expect a change for the better,” according to the survey.

Of course our image will change. Our new president will look at other countries with respect. He will make sure our people are taken care of. We are going to be fine.

Sorry grandpa its not your year.

America and the world is not looking for a very very very very old person as president.

The average life age is 78, I dont want somone close to it running the #1 country, also with your temper and what you called your 2nd wife you should be ashamed.

This great nation has been a beacon of hope for the entire planet since its inception – the greatest engine of prosperity and social mobility the world has ever seen. No other nation has espoused higher aspirations than ours or labored more mightily to attain them. It is undeniable that we lost our way as prosperity morphed into insatiable greed and our desire for security became intractable militarism. Is it any wonder that the admiration of the world has turned to resentment and fear? All we need to relight the beacon is to return to our true core values – they're all there right in the Declaration and Constitution. Vote for the expansion of freedom, not empire – vote your hopes, not your fears...

What a stupid article and an even dumber poll!

Since when does the United States of America elect their presidents based on the opinions of people from foreign countries?

Gimme a break!

Paul C. Palmetto Bay, FL   June 12th, 2008 8:44 pm ET

There is no doubt that Obama is the better candidate and should be elected but, the American voters have been noted for choosing a president for the most asinine reasons.
There is a lot of truth in the saying "you can't go broke underestimating the American public" and I don't think they can bring themselves to vote for a (half) black candidate.

No McCain!   June 12th, 2008 8:41 pm ET

I think it show the world the United States is more than willing to elect a black leader!

Also, I think it was mentioned on CNN, most countries except the U.S. are willing to negotiate with hostile nations. I find this a little surprising.

Hopefully, this will spread throughout the United States and Obama's lead will increase.

I've been hearing over and over again, that's not what he meant. Well, guess what, that's exactly what he said. At least with Mccain we heard the whole comment, can't say the same for the bitter comment. Didn't even get a transcript....

I digress. Happy to see the world agrees.

I guess the rest of us want to see America 'tries' before starting the bombing runs. Face to face negotiations, with the 'important' issues ON the table is better than, 'you do what we want before we will talk to you.' (Canada is carrying the can in Afghanistan BTW!)
I still can NOT believe McCain is not being forced to flip flop on his proposal to kick Russia, and bar China, from the G8!!!???
Could SOMEBODY ask Britain, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, and Japan how they feel about such a moronic proposal?
You would hear "he has lost his bearings?' in 5 languages.
Maybe after 8 years of Obama the improvement in the World's image of America will be such that y'all can STOP wearing Canadian flags when travelling abroad.

This was a key factor in why I decided very early to support Senator Obama. The U.S. can't stand another four years of Bush foreign policy, and that is exactly what we'll get with McCain. McCain doesn't see any need to change course in Iraq or in any other foreign policy matters. That shows he's out of touch.

When outsiders see Obama they see a change candidate. Not because of race, as Geraldine Fernono describe but of diversity, which makes this country of ours so brilliantly defined.

Please everyone stop the hate mongering against either candidates.
We don't need any of that in the 21st century.

Senator Obama will breathe fresh life into our foreign relations in a way that Senator McCain simply can't compete with. Why, just the MERE FACT of electing a black man U.S. President will shore up our image as a country that's moving boldly into the future. There's simply no calculating the amount of good it could do this country to elect Senator Obama.

Belle   June 12th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

Let's see here.....

McCain tells Bush the war in Iraq is not working...he pushed a surge policy that the White House did not endorse for 8 months.

Now a year later, the surge IS working. Iraq is beginning to take responsibility for fighting off insurgents...and now the American Death Toll is the lowest since the start. By November the US will continue to pull out troops from Iraq. McCain also believes that the Defense Contractors should be ACCOUNTABLE for the money they spend.

How is this war mongering? I am a Democrat that actually trusts McCain in Iraq.

However, that said...BOTH Obama and McCain will increase the national debt with their economic policies, and right now America has too much debt.

Clinton seems to have been the ONLY one that got it. You have to have a self-sufficient America to have a strong America. McCain and Obama will continue to sell out America to the lowest bidders.

Those who have unfavorable rate about new USA government are the ones getting big foreign aid from Republican administration. Egypt and Jordan are no except because Egypt is the second receiver of USA donation after Israel and Jordan. There is much worry in some countries that Democrats tend to focuse on demostic issues than foreign ones and I will not be surprise with those statistics.

America is choosing , now and then, the world president, not only the American president. therefore, we should understand that the change must be real for the American forgieng policy, skyrocketing of gas prices and the value of the currency. Republican Presidential candidate , John Mccian has shown nothing different ,than Mr: Bush's policy that we have seen for the last eight years. And the only change that the American is hoping for is the call from the democratic presidendential candidate, Barack Obama ,so far.

At least 14 Republican members of Congress have refused to endorse or publicly support Sen. John McCain for president, and more than a dozen others declined to answer whether they back the Arizona senator.

Many of the recalcitrant GOP members declined to detail their reasons for withholding support, but Rep. John Peterson (R-Pa.) expressed major concerns about McCain’s energy policies and Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.) cited the Iraq war."

So that's 2 non-backers for Sen. Obama and 14 non-backers for McCain

I wonder why this story isn't all over the news.

As a travelor, Our image overseas is one that I am not proud of. It is best not to announce that you are American in certain parts if you can get by with it.

It is so sad as to what the Bush Administration has done to alienate this country and voting McCain would be further alienation. IT MAKES ME SICK TO MY STOMACH TO HEAR SOME OF HRC SUPPORTERS BOAST THEIR VOTE FOR MCCAIN.

A MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE ANGRY VOTERS!!!

Sharon Adkins   June 12th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

For the first time, since I could vote as a Democrat, I will be voting as a Republican. I am not the only voter who feels that Clinton should have stayed in the race against Obama. I feel that Obama is the worst candidate you could have found, he is not for the common man but for big business and his own ego of importance. I am totally afraid of what this man will do for our country or to it. I would rather have four more years of a Republican than vote for him. There are many of us in Iowa who feel the same and have been sending out the messages to get Obama defeated.

If you folks think the Image of the US in the world could not get any worse, just make sure McCain is elected President.

That old man is so backwards, after his first term a womans right to chose will be gone and "equal pay" is the punch line of discriminating jokes. After his second term I wouldn't even be surprised if women have lost the right to vote and the husband automatically owns all her possessions after marriage.

Americans really love reruns and remakes, don't they? Womens rights movement take two. If you really manage to get McCain elected and he can only push HALF of his real agenda (including all the wars he would like to start without any prior attempts of diplomacy whatsoever), the current Image of the US in the world would be a pretty picture by comparison.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me a third time, shame on America!

It's nice to see us become part of the global community again!

I am so disgusted by Bush's comment suggesting that we'll just have to abide by the Supreme Court's decision in the matter of Guantanimo... why has this man and certain members of his admin not been prosecuted??

Because too many governmental figures would also fall. Our country has disgraced itself, here's to a much brighter future!!

drsmarty08   June 12th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Barack Obama has a genius for tact and diplomacy. It's nice to know that w/ an Obama presidency, air strikes are not our only means of preventing and/or solving international conflicts. The notion that our leaders might have the brains and skill to maturely resolve conflicts with the gift of gab is astounding and long overdue. It's time for America to regain its prominent and exemplary standing in the world community. It's time to replace Bush's brutishness w/ Obama's finesse.

Americans are masochistic at heart – they like to vote against their best interests. The rest of the free world does not do this.

We did it with Bush in 2000, again blatantly in 2004, and if it weren’t for the 4 dollar gas, we would no doubt do it again in 2008.

Sadly, I have no doubts that many people are going to say, "Who the heck cares what a bunch of foreigners think?!"

The truth is that we all should. We Americans have incredibly narrow-minded views of the world and it is time for us to open our minds to the reality that our lives are inextricably entwined with the other nations with whom we share this planet, and it is the all of our best interests to get along and work together.

The results of this poll are very telling and I urge everyone to ponder what they mean for the future of the United States' position in the world.

Since when did America start electing leaders based on what the people in Europe thought? Honestly here, the most important factor in any election is how our next president will work to help the United States succeed, not how to make us look more attractive to our European socialist brethren.

McCain's the only one that appears to be doing that at this point...

Republican who loves OBAMA   June 12th, 2008 6:37 pm ET

Obama is like a breath of fresh air! Some are questioning whether he has enough experience, last time I checked McCain is a senator also, and how is his experience to run the country any better than OBAMA. McCain has been around the same old Washington croonies for years, and is deeply embedded in their ways. He's promising change, but is running the same kind of smear campaign right out of the old Republican's playbook. Obama brings a level head and temperment that the country needs to get back on track. He may not have all the answers, but he has called on all Americans to stand up and fight for your own American dream, and we haven't heard this from a presidential candidate in a LONG time. Vote for OBAMA, and restore America. Good luck OBAMA!!!

R-E-S-P-E-C-T. America is coming of age with Obama. He is diplomatic, presidential, and brilliant, with a social vision for America and the world that is all about sustainability and fixing what is broken. He is all about restoring the American Dream and once again collaborating with our friends (and negotiating wherever possible), but always keeping America safe by fighting terrorism where it really is. The world is safer with Obama's wisdom and values leading the discussion on issues which affect the whole planet. We are, after all, one human family.

Just the thought of an intelligent person with a wise and mild temerament, one that puts peace ahead of war while at the same time the courage to fight if it is necessary. We need Obama someone that is not soley about filling his pockets while the people go bust!

We need Obama to gain respect from nations across the world after the eight years of Bush being a bummbling embarrasement to us all over the world.

We will be so proud each time he represents us with his intelligence and good looks. Plus the fact that he is a black man will be viewed as progress for America, it also will go well for the nations that do not trust white Americans, there are many nations that we deal with that have a total distrust for any and all whites. Many in the military can attest to this!

Mccain represents the same – gray-haired white men who think they are better than other nations and don't have to negotiate with them. Always threatening force. Obama is change and a glitter of hope different to this old attitude which has brought the United states to the sorry state that it is in today. Don't think others around the world don't know this. That is why they welcome Obama.

Darth Vadik, CA   June 12th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Do americans confuse strength with brute force?

1) He has already started making changes and keeping promises by rejecting lobbyist money

2) Lincoln, Churchill, and FDR were able to solve many problems because of their ability to inspire confidence in the people of the nation. NEVER underestimate the power of a great orator.

Something to think about during this political season.
We’ve been lied to for the whole time.

jfs Memhis, Tn   June 12th, 2008 5:59 pm ET

There is an excitment around the world not seen since the early Sixties and the JFK Administration. We NEED this man so much now. Go Obama

Stud   June 12th, 2008 5:58 pm ET

The world is waiting for us to elect Barack. Republican/bigots are on the losing side of this fight.

Capt. Smash, Salt Lake City, Utah   June 12th, 2008 5:58 pm ET

Anybody with a brain knows that one.

Yes yes, yes,
people all over the world already are talking about how we can come togehter to talk, to see our differences to agree to disagree, and treat each other with human dignity and respect...........

YES WE CAN
the world awaits our leader..............

Pam   June 12th, 2008 5:56 pm ET

I absolutely agree. Not only because of showing how our country is overcoming race, but because Obama is so progressive. The rest of the world needs to see that most Americans are not living in the past. We are a proud people. Yet the world needs to see that we are aware of our image to the world and that we want to change the wrong negative views that some parts of the world harbor about us.

'We may have some bad apples (doesn't everywhre?) but for the most part we are good descent people.

Ronald Reagan, HELL   June 12th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH..........

Bayou Joe   June 12th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

I am glad you mentioned that the only country that differs is the United States. That is the only country that matters in this election.
Obama will not be our President.

OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT   June 12th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

Well That Settles It! Obama Is Going To Be Our Next President!

P, CA   June 12th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

I like how people who dislike Obama point to the fact that Middle-Easterners want him more, so obviously, Obama has a secret deal with terrorists somehow, but they'll completely ignore the fact that every other country wants him too. Weird.

Oh, and I took some time to puruse all the PUMAPAC (pro-"If not Hillary, McCain") websites, and honestly, a lot of the linked sites are basically just hate sites against Obama. Way to go, guys. Preach out against Hillary-hating, but let Obama-hating and suspicion run rampant.

You people (Brian Knoxville, etc.) really are hypocrites if you think you can trash one person because their supporters weren't nice to you. News flash: you were there too during the primaries, and you know that there was nothing different about the vitriol spewed between the two candidates. If you can't learn reconciliation, then I'm sorry, but you've haven't proven to be so virtuous yourselves. I would've been for Hillary if she'd gotten the nod, but she didn't.

Don't live in the past, don't foster hate, let it go already. You can support McCain all you want – that's not what I'm talking about – but just cool out on the hatemongering and the rumors.

Mark Anthony - Lake Elsinore, CA   June 12th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

This just goes to show that the U.S. leads the free world and the world wants change and Obamas that change.

Tyler   June 12th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

Exactly, with Obama as president, the USA will return to it's former place as the strongest and best nation in the world.

Mike in Calgary   June 12th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

McCain says he HATES war, but he castigates Obama for even thinking about talking to parties who McCain view as evil ENEMIES ofthe US.

McCain HATES WAR but obviously McCAIN HATES TALK EVEN MORE THAN HE HATES WAR!

McCain seemsto losing it. Pro=lifeas he may be, he is alienating without discrimination – he is an equal opportunity turn-off!

Mike

Ardnuas   June 12th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

If we DON'T change, we WILL destroy ourselves. We NEED friends around the world, so IF we have to fight another war............................. we will have HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Obama/Hagel

Man of Integrity   June 12th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

It is not about Image it is about integrity and character. Obama has neither and will destroy the United States. Cuba, Venezuela, Iran and
all the Muslim Nations will rejoice if he becomes president.

England, France, Germany and all Democracies will suffer.

If image is all you are concerned about then we are truly doomed as a Nation.

McCain 08 , a Man of Integrity.

Steve   June 12th, 2008 5:52 pm ET

Another reason to reject Sen. McCain this November...CNN just aired a report that FEMA just gave away 85 million dollars in relief items tagged for Katrina victims. They stored the items for two years and then gave it all away to avoid paying a storage fee. FEMA told CNN they didn't know there was still a need and then refused to comment further as "it isn't news". This report was on CNN five minutes ago.

We absolutely can not have another four years of Bush policies which is what we'll get with Sen. McCain.

Vote Obama in November!

Seth in Jacksonville, FL   June 12th, 2008 5:52 pm ET

We DO need other nations around the world to respect us. We can't survive on our own. Please make the right choice this fall – we don't need another bully in the white house. We need someone who prefers diplomacy first. Obama will keep American's interests first, but will do so in a positive way. Please vote for Obama in November. Our futures count on it!

What Bull   June 12th, 2008 5:52 pm ET

And pray tell just why is it that Obama is so well liked in these foreign countries. He is virtually unknown to people here in the U.S. There is more to Obama than we know apparently. Just give some reasons why Obama is liked more than John McCain in these foreign countries. Something is just not right here.

R. Cooper   June 12th, 2008 5:50 pm ET

Thank God for Obama! Otherwise the US may be facing the profile a third world country!

Frank in NYC   June 12th, 2008 5:50 pm ET
