The DNC's host committee is facing a possible monetary shortfall.
The DNC's host committee is facing a possible monetary shortfall.

DENVER (AP) — The host committee for the Democratic National Convention faces a possible shortfall of $15 million, complicating logistics for the August event and forcing it to abruptly postpone a media walkthrough of the site scheduled for next week.

The Democratic National Committee has asked the cash-strapped panel to raise $40.6 million by Monday to finance the event. Last month, the committee said it had just $25 million in cash, and it has failed to meet each of several fundraising deadlines since signing a contract with the DNC last year.

Host committee members consistently have refused public comment on their fundraising efforts. Committee spokesman Chris Lopez could not immediately be reached by telephone Friday.

Last week, Denver city auditor Dennis Gallagher sent a letter to Mayor John Hickenlooper saying taxpayers are concerned they may get stuck with the tab if Denver can't come up with another $15 million by Monday.

"I have people buttonholing me in coffee shops, corralling me along the 16th Street Mall, even stopping by my house asking how the city will be able to afford the convention if the fundraising
efforts fall short," Gallagher wrote. "Specifically people are asking me if Denver will have to use tax dollars to back-load any financial shortfall or even if the city is planning to use bond money to subsidize any shortfall."

Hickenlooper, who has traveled across the country seeking funds for the convention, has said he is confident the host committee will raise enough money by Monday's deadline.

The Democratic National Convention Committee announced Friday that it had delayed a session for the news media next Thursday at the Pepsi Center, site of the August 25-28 convention, and hoped to
reschedule at a later date. "Postponing the event allows us to work through outstanding issues and ensure a successful event when media do arrive in Denver," said Theodore LeCompte, the DNCC's
director of media logistics.

A DNCC official who asked not to be identified cited financial and logistics problems for the delay.

Earlier this month, the Denver 2008 Host Committee canceled 24 separate welcoming events around Denver for convention delegates.

It decided instead that it will hold a single celebration to mark the rebuilding of areas affected by Hurricane Katrina.

The committee denied the cancellations had anything to do with fundraising.

The August 24 party, to be sponsored by the Friends of New Orleans, an organization supporting Gulf Coast rebuilding, will be held three years after Katrina devastated New Orleans and the Gulf
Coast region.

B. Churchill,
I thought I was the only one on here with reading comprehension beyond a third-grade level. The fact that the Hillary fanatics can't understand the story shows why they continue to stamp their feet and cry about sexism and how somebody stole the nomination from Hillary that was apparently owed to her. They can't grasp that in a contest, someone wins and someone loses.

Duke,

I have read through all these posts and I do not see Hillary fans as stomping their feet because the election was stolen. With all the FL and MI votes counted Obama may still have won. I think what bothers people is that the vote does not represent the full voice of the people so it is rather like Bush won in FL. I myself will vote Obama if Clinton is on the ticket as well because the election process was questionable and a vote should always reflect the full vote of the people and there should never be people counted as half votes as if they are half people. There should never be votes taken from one person and given to the other. This makes it seem too many (myself included) that the DNC hand selected Obama instead of Obama actually winning. It also bothers me that Obama would claim to be for the people, but would let be people be counted as half voters or just plain have their vote stolen from them just so he can win. I have re-registered to vote as no party so if Clinton is not on the ticket I think I will be going with McCain this time. I do not like the other VP choices much at all.

Wayne   June 14th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

What the Obamanites aren't understanding is that the lack of money for the Denver Convention shows that the people who usually give aren't giving. It means that Obama is a lame duck before he ever makes it to the convention. The people who have been integral to the DNC and the convention have been disenfranchised, and they aren't going to volunteer their time or money to a poser.

The new DNC supporters are all the elitists and babies, and they need to step up to the plate and learn how to take care of their new party. Because all the HRC supporters are no longer going to carry them.

Cal in New York   June 14th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

I cannot believe that a lot of you peple believe HRC on her false aligation that she recieved the most popular vote. The Caucus states don't count every vote, just a sample vote and if you counted all of those and FL/MI obeyed the laws you could see that HRC is a liar and I know that is why the majority of the people voted for Obama. You people are so misinformed you need to get some of the news from NovaMradio or Air America and get informed you have fallen into HRC Republican ways Oh yea that is right she is a DEM I couldn't tell

Margaret   June 14th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

I agree with Amy, the DNC should scale down the convention, but as stated by others above, it's not the DNC they are talking about they are talking about the host committee.

And as usual the Clinton supporters are still crying that the nomination was 'stolen'. Get over it!! No one bought any votes, there were just as many of us voting for Obama (more actually because not everyone is counting the caucus states which Clinton didn't think were important). If you want to vote for McCain go ahead…just thank yourself for the consequences.

Adam   June 14th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

I've got 3 questions for Obama supporters…

Obama pledges to increase the capital tax gain to 28%. Do you honestly think that that is a good idea? That would hurt the economy, and really slow growth.

Obama pledges to tax the oil companies on their windfall profits. That's a Jimmie Carter policy. Do you honestly think that is a good idea? This idea is nothing but pandering so Obama can appear to be standing up to the big bad oil companies but it would do nothing but force the oil companies to jack up their prices to offset the lost profit.

Obama voted for the Cheney energy bill. What makes you think he can bring gas prices down?

I'm a Dem, but Obama's economic ideas are terrible. He needs to get some better economic minds around him because his current economic plans would lead to an even weaker economy if that's possible.

Marquis James   June 14th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Hmmmmn? Seems strange that this committee never spoke of such possible scenarios when Billary was $20 million in debt, knowing that nominated campaigns have to reconcile their debts before progressing into the General election!!!!!! Black America is waiting to see how the "white political establishment" will change the rules as usual, when negroes threaten to show up!!!!!! Either the Iraq war will mysteriously end, the DNC will run out of campaign money, or Bush will start a war or implement Martial Law or something, anything to keep a black man out of the white house!!! Cause a black man can not be privvy to all of white america's secrets!!!!! Let's see?????

James   June 14th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

I don't know where these "scorched earth" alledged HRC supporters that are posting here come from. Everyone I know who supported HRC, has taken a look at the facts and even though they are disappointed, they are supporting Obama. Are you guys really HRC supporters or are you really working for the Repubs?

Project Chaos is alive and well on the internet.

Oregon   June 14th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

There's a lot of white trash resentment in these comments. Look - Obama played by the rules and won by the rules. Hillary Clinton and her supporters, by contrast, tried to change the rules . . . after discovering that under the rules they themselves helped write . . . they couldn't win. People on this thread who resent Barack Obama are just displaying their own petty personal insecurities.

speedopeneto Washington State   June 14th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

I am with Ginny in CA. I have been a life long Democrat, and I really wanted to participate this year. From the very beginning it was clear that the party in Washington's 8th District had already made up their minds. Hillary was not going to be considered. If you wanted to participate, it would be a vote for whomever the party had already chosen. The whole delegate thing is a joke. They call them elected delegates. Gee, I got to be a delegate from my area because I and one other person showed up. There was no one else. I have never been more disappointed. And they call this democracy. The conservative Democrats, at least in our State, are not being represented. This is one reason a local retired Army Major decided to run. He won’t have any party support and no big money from special interest groups. But he is going door to door, talking with the people. I admire his willingness to put himself out there in the corrupt sea of politics.

Mike from Virginia   June 14th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Here we go! Witness the death of the Democratic party. The Democrats have a history for nominating losers, folks who have absolutely no chance of winning a general. It's good to see that they continue the tradition this year. No wonder they don't have the money for their convention. What's the point? Everyone knows Obama doesn't stand a chance anyway.

Kathy from Colorado   June 14th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Just for clarification…for anyone NOT related to this matter…it is the HOST COMMITTEE that is shrot money, not the Convention Committee—the Host Committee is a separate group with completely non-partisan fundraising…its not like it can ask for money from politicians.

WE are going through tough economic times so things like this are getting hurt…its sad but we can't complain too much because the Convention coming to Denver is going to bring in a lot of money from volunteers and delegates coming into our city to spend thier money in our stores, hotels, etc.

barb   June 14th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

I posted earlier but for whatever reason it's not up so I'm trying again. I think CNN and the DNC should try to get a website up for the express purpose of fundraising for DNC. The thing is Obam did do a wonderful job raising funds for his own campaign. His skills and running a great campaign are probalby an indaication that he has a great deal of insight in how to organize. Not a bad thing. None of his funds come from corpoations or lobbyists, but from the people who believe in his policies.

Most of the dems and some of the independents also feel good about what the DNC has to offer the Americans. Our candidate has really excellent ideas for helping the average and struggling Americans to survive and even thrive successfully in living the American dream.

I know Hillary kept the campaign going for a very long time, and that caused her to go deeply into debt which now Obama is being approached to pay off for her. He cannot take care of all the DNC Debt and all the Hillary debt, besides run his own finacillay solvent campaign. Let's forget jumping all over the winner and all agree to do what we can to ehlp a dem reach the White House in January, 09. Please people. throw away the bitter attitude! Let's be togehter in this ok? You may choose to bring a Republican just to be mean but what good will that do? McSame is not what we need!

ukd   June 14th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

The DNC will pay the price of being unfair to Hillary. We are not sending any money to the DNC anymore. John McCain is more qualified to be the next president of the United States.

Betty   June 14th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Most you people posting on here need to grow up & get a life. First, learn to read (maybe a little comprehension exercise would help too). Learn to think, and learn to type. Better yet, learn to keep quiet if the subject is something you have absolutely no knowledge of.

Hillary Clinton had NOTHING to do with the convention fundraising committee coming up short. And I'm betting they'll have the funds in the end anyway.

You obviously don't understand how the DNC works in relation to the convention & the Denver fundraising group. And it appears most of you have no idea how the electoral college works come election time in November.

I hope there are brighter minds running the DNC than what I see on here, because if not, the Democratic party is in BIG trouble for the general election. That goes for the Republican party, too, for all you GOP ghost writers on here.

George in Denver   June 14th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

As a resident of Denver, I think the citizens of the Denver and Colorado should sue our elected representatives if even a single taxpayer dime is spent on the DNC. Since when is it the taxpayers responsibility to pay for anything for the political parties? Never.

I hope Mayor Hickenlooper and Gov. Ritter are listening to the people here in Colorado and don't try to make us pay for the huge waste of money that these political conventions have become.

Allie in NY   June 14th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

To the reader who commented on Michigan and the 4 delegates that were given to Obama:

Actually Hillary broke the rules by staying on the ballot. The other candidates were complying with DNC rules by not campaigning there and removing themselves from the ballot, and Hillary should have done the same. Since she didn't, you have a situation where you can't possibly know how many votes Obama would have gotten. The fact that 40% bothered to vote "other" sends a pretty strong message. Many others surely stayed home, since not only was their candidate not on the ballot, but they knew none of the votes in MI were supposed to count anyway. The only genuinely fair way to handle it would have been to start from scratch and re-poll both states. The state parties and all the candidates understood what the rules were and what the consequences were going to be if they moved up their primary dates. It was only when Hillary saw that she needed FL and MI that there was noise to somehow change on the rules that everyone had already agreed to so that FL and MI would count again. It's an unfortunate situation for FL and MI voters, but their gripe is with their state parties, not with the DNC. In light of the circumstances, the delegate split they arrived at was more than fair towards Hillary, who herself violated DNC rules and shouldn't have gotten any delegates for those states at all. If you're unhappy about what happened, take it to your local party officials, and stop taking it out on the DNC and Obama. Regardless, to vote for McCain is to cut your own nose off to spite your face. I strongly disliked Hillary, but if she'd won the nomination, I'd have voted for her over McCain without hesitation, because I am not a masochist.

Answer: DEMS were too busy giving their input on superdelegates and how to cater to Hillary and what she felt that she was entitled to.

No, it was Obama's people that were buying off superdelegates.

John Zeger -

True enough… that's probably why the failed leaders of the undemocratic Democratic Party selected him, because he is such a slick saleman that he gets people to throw money at him and the DNC decided that they would rather dip into that pot and take as much of the money as possible regardless of whether or not the guy can actually win the general election.

There was a time when the DNC stood on its principles even in the face of losing elections rather than tossing out our principles in order to take some cash.

Obama didn't run a winning campaign. His friends had to carry him over the finish line because he wasn't able to get there on his own regardless of all his campaign's money.

Barak Obama is the nominee and conveniently enough, they all of a sudden don't have money. But hey I guess I'm just an American citizen that works for a living. I mean really, who's gonna listen to what I have to say or care about what I think. Oh well, when this country is brought to it's knees the only thing we'll all be doing is panicing and blaming someone else for our screw-ups right? That's the American way.

Justin-Austin, TX   June 14th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Since the Dems can't handle their finances or pick consultants that can, maybe us Republicans (who are responsible with our money) can lend you some money. All of you blaming Bush for the housing crisis, the job losses, etc are ridiculous. You are probably the ones that decided to take out more debt than you can handle and are now paying the price. Just an FYI…it is YOUR fault the economy is shutting down right now. You had to have that huge house in California that you couldn't afford. Now your credit defaults are causing banks to not lend to anyone and limiting the liquidity in our national economy. BLAME YOURSELF…NOT BUSH OR MCCAIN.

Lori   June 14th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Your true democrats that consistently donate to the DNC are not donating this year. Why? Because you chose to down play Hillary Clinton as if she was not in a dead heat. I and many others have already informed the DNC that as regular donators to the DNC we will no longer be contributing. The primary and the way party leaders and super delegates handled themselves was repulsive.

Good luck getting the money from OBAMA's new democrats. We were the parties true blue donators and the DNC slapped us in the face and punched us in the gut. I am highly offended by the DNC and you can thank Dean for part of that as well. Who do you people think that you are?

Anne   June 14th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Well, Hillary Clinton supporters are called "dead-enders", you know. So, when the dead-end money stops flowing to the DNC and Democratic Candidates, they should not care, right? And when the dead-end votes start flowing to the other side, they won't care about that either, right? Right. Because the Obama campaign followers have said they do not need the Clinton voters to win. I hope not because a lot of people who voted for Clinton will be voting for McCain, Nader, write-in, or just won't be voting. It has nothing to do with Clinton. It has everything to do with the Backbone of the Democratic voters not liking Obama. It is difficult for an Obama cult member to "get" that, but it is true. There are voters who don't want him President…and NOT because of the color of his skin, folks. But, maybe Mr. Obama can just wave his magic wand, give a speech, or two, and whal-la, he can appoint himself President! You know, similar to the way he self-appointed his nomination. LOL

Fla   June 14th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

It would serve the DNC right if they couldn't have a convention. They never meant to have a democratic process anyway. They robbed Floridians of their votes, pressured the superdelegates and practically crowned Obama as the nominee, I hope their convention is a financial disaster. I got half a vote in the primary; they can have half a donation of nothing. my whole vote in the fall goes to McCain, not because I like or agree with him, but because he is better than Obama.

It is really typical of the Donks. They have no shame. The party is made up primarily of treasonous and leacherous fools. An Obama victory, coupled with a consolidation of Donk power over Congress, guarantees that this will the last national elections we will have. This is simply a Marxist coup.

Party unity   June 14th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

Again this is why the Democrats always lose. No organization and arrogance. This is just ridiculous. First they push the winning candidate out of the race and now they can't pay for their convention. I feel bad for the taxpayers of Denver because the Democrats are going to leave them with the Bill. Time for Pelosi to go. She can't run congress and now she can't even put together a convention.

Rick NYC   June 14th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

Maybe if they had tried to run a real primary election instead of one where the media and party bosses got to pick the nominee there'd be more of us willing to give some financial support. Who needs a system where not all states are counted because they didn't hold their primaries on the "right" day? Why does a vote count on one day and not another? The nomination process this year was as stupid and irritating as having Granny take her shoes off before she can get on the plane.

Malik Obama confirms his half-brother Barack grew up a Muslim
By Israel Insider staff June 13, 2008

Malik holds a photo of Obama and him in Muslim dress, reportedly when the two first met in 1985

Apparently the Obamas of Kenya have been reading those scurrilous emails to which Barack likes to refer, because they have no doubt — contrary to the claims of the Obama campaign, that the presidential candidate was raised a Moslem. They take that as a given.

As the Jerusalem Post reports, "Barack Obama's half brother Malik said Thursday that if elected his brother will be a good president for the Jewish people, despite his Muslim background. In an interview with Army Radio he expressed a special salutation from the Obamas of Kenya."

The Obama brothers' father, a senior economist for the Kenyan government who studied at Harvard University, died in car crash in 1982. He left six sons and a daughter. All of his children - except Malik — live in Britain or the United States. Malik and Barack met in 1985.

If Hillary would have gotten the nominee. All the Obama supporters would be saying the same thing you Hillary supporters are saying. In any contest there is always going to be a loser. So suck it up and move on.

Have you people won everything in your life? NO! Life is not always fair, but it is time to move past all this anger. Have you ever quit your job because someone received a promotion over you. NO!. You just moved on. Hillary is moving on and it's really time for her supporters to move on. Hillary has been vacationing for the past two weeks and all that has been posted on these boards is betterness one after another.

After 911 the whole country was able to come together. Hillary lost is no way equal to 911, but as Dems. We still can't seem to get it together. You probably don't even defend/protect your kids the way you voice your opinions for Hillary. HILLARY AIN'T THINKING ABOUT ANY OF US RIGHT NOW. Jon, Somewhere, MI   June 14th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

lol Looks like the Dems really need a lesson in how to pull a party together after a primary. Oh well, more power for us. Maybe McCain should name Hillary as his running mate. See how much you all will regret alienating those "bitter Americans" when that ticket buries you in November.

"Its a SHAME to read the racist speak evil against Obama, the same point out the weakness of Mugabe."

OMFG! Obama = Mugabe! Please, I want you working on the DNC's ad committee this year!

Just another reason why Dean should step down.

If there are insufficient funds for the typical convention, have a "different" convention. Save fuel and have it via conference call, by satellite or by mail …. we have to think about alternatives because we cannot have everything we want in this life! Living within one's means will take on a new meaning in he years to come!

Arkansan 4 Obama   June 14th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

Georgia,

You posted saying what you reap you will sow. Did you ever think that is why Senator Clinton did not get the nomination? So you are exactly right. So remember that your bitterness, anger, and wanting to punish the rest of America because your candidate of choice didn't win will come back to bite you! Because as you stated WHAT YOU REAP SO SHALL YOU SOW!!!!!!!

iluvsparragus   June 14th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

it's obama's convention, let him pay for it….he bought the delegates votes….or perhaps oprah would. She is buying herself a president after all.

OH MY!!!!!   June 14th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

ch……………………………………………………Maybe they can move the convention to Obama's church?………………..HOW about REV HAGEE 'S CHURCH ! TIM……………………………….Nominate Mrs. Clinton before this whole thing melts down………………………HRC has her on MONEY problem$20 mil ………..GET OVER IT she is not the Nominee

You Stupid Stupid Bloggers!   June 14th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

Read the article. The DNC isn't short on money–the committe trying to raise money to hold the convention in Denver is!

This has nothing to do with the fact that Hellary isn't on the ticket, except for the fact that she drained funds all around and consumed time and energy that could probably have been used to raise funds in Denver.

Stupid Bloggers–read first, then respond! You are way off base. Duh!

DENISEGA   June 14th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

I agree with a previous post. The DNC spent so much time catering to Hillary Clinton, when she lost in February, that the DNC is running behind!

Tori   June 14th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Grow up HRC supporters! How about if it was the other way around and the 18 million voters and 2million individual donors to Obama where complaining. Get a grip and actually vote on policy and NOT on anger. If you screw this up for the 9/11 generation who are coming out in droves to vote I will be so mad.

Another thing to the Baby boomers for HRC…Who is paying social security??????…ummm lets see the YOUTH! Don't make the youth vote angry or else maybe we won't pay the social security that ensures your retirement OH WAIT THATS RIGHT the republicans already screwed up SS in 8 years well I guess we will have to do something else then….

A famous proverb,"Don't bite the hand that feeds you". Eventually you will all be retired and we will be picking up the paycheck. Just please for once think of the nation as a whole rather than your anger or who is morally superior.

DENISEGA   June 14th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

All of you bitter ex-hillary supporters need to get a grip ad shut up complaining. Obama won fair and square, by the same rules Bill won by, but Hilary could not. He got MORE votes than her, so for you people to keep acting like something was handed to him is ridiculous.

Be careful you are acting BITTER, maybe Obama was right!

Vote for McCain, and see what your economic status is next year. Hope you can still put food on your table, because I will be able to, wether Obama wins or not!

Ray, NM   June 14th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

I am afraid Dr. Dean will go down with DNC and Obama as he did in 2004. Nora, FL is too clueless.

ALL YOU HILLARY SUPPORTER SAYING YOU WILL NOT SEND MONEY TO HELP THE DNC, NEED TO READ THE ARTICLE. THE DNC IS NOT BROKE. YOU DIDN'T HELP HILLARY GET OUT OF DEBT. WHY SHOULD WE THINK YOU WOULD HELP THE DNC.
STOP WITH THE BITTERNESS, THE BEST CANDIDATE WON.

Nancy Kenosha   June 14th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

As a longtime Clinton supporter, I apologize for those from our camp who have become blind to the importance of having a Democrat in the White House. For women, education, the economy, health, and more, a Democratic president is vital toward achieving our goals. Look at what has happened over the past 8 years. The dead, the further impoverished, the educational setbacks. We cannot afford a McCain presidency, not just because of McCain, but because of the people he brings with him. The world and the country deserve better. Also, those who think the DNC coronated Obama are missing much of the story. This was a complex situation that the Clinton camp was very involved in as well. We all were part of the entanglement. Now let's get the DNC (whose 50-state strategy will win the election) and the Obama campaign healthy so we can move on our agenda.

HRC for Sec of State!

lady democracy   June 14th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

I am a white woman. I am college educated (working on my third degree). And I am an Obama supporter, with all of my heart. I am a Democrat based on my beliefs, which include a belief and faith in God, and not because my mommy or daddy told me to be, and not because I hopped on some band wagon that rolled through town. I am a true Democrat in part because even if Senator Clinton had won the nomination, despite the fact that she is not my top choice, I would not have stamped my feet on the ground or cried foul play or racism or sexism or any number of the nonsensical claims here. I would have supported the decision of my fellow democrats and swung my support behind the candidate chosen by the majority. These discussion boards make me sick on a daily basis because of the lack of reason and intelligent thought. It saddens me how irrational people are, and how little thought is put into the ranting and raving. How it is more important for Clinton supporters to have HER in the White House than to stand up for what we believe in as a party and have a Democrat in the White House for just the second time in my lifetime. The lack of funds in Denver has nothing to do with karma or "reaping what you sow" or a failure on Obama's part. The folks at the host committee, I imagine, have been fighting an uphill battle to fund a convention with no candidate, up until a week and a half ago. The fairweather Dems that comment here are certainly no help. You should be ashamed of yourselves. I am more proud of my party today than I ever have been.

judy   June 14th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

I can't believe all the people who are so vindictive that they would actually vote for McBush–how do you think Hillary will have any power in the Senate with a 3rd Bush term? Oh–maybe McCain with have her as his attorney general or appoint her to the Supreme Ct. She did say he was as qualified and patriotic as herself. So let's get McCain elected and have the war with Iran start, and appoint another right wing judge to end women's rights. Old man McCain will really be great for the country. That'll show us!!

No thanks.

rachel   June 14th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

I do hope folks listened to the DNC rules/bylaws committee who took legally cast votes for one candidate and gave them to another. This amounts to YOU casting a vote for your candidate and party activists reaching into the ballot box and taking that vote and casting it for the candidate of their choice. This is America folks..it is not a third world emerging country….and this is the Democratic Party. I think maybe they should hire President Carter to MONITOR elections. …so sad that some love to call names but care less that this takes place in our country.
independent voter

Shiloh Everett   June 14th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

Well some of you are right. The DNC has lost some money by nominating Obama-HOWEVER, some of Hillary's rich powerful freinds threatened to backrupt the DNC if she were not choosen. They did this way before the RBC meet. They tried to BUY the primary! I am glad the DNC did not bow to this. We should help them as best we can if we don't want our elections bought by the highest bidder-no matter who the canidate is.

Noah   June 14th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

Good. The DNC will not get my help and its has nothing to do with Hillary.

Bitter in PA   June 14th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

Political pundants and the media often report about the Christian vote… the black vote… the poor vote etc. They often forget to calculate the stupid voting bloc, which is quite large. Obama doesn't get their vote for obvious reasons… but some will "Get Smart" before November.

Go Obama!!!

Cindy,CA   June 14th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

Maybe this is the way the convention will be cancelled and held in Chicago. One day to nominate Obama as the official nominee. I will wait and see if Obama and Dean will really make this happen. If it does than I think the democratic party is over. Tooo much control by the party elites. We the people are having our voices torn to shreds and the party does nothing….

Ruth   June 14th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

the DNC deserves to dissolve; great news that they are having problems with fundraising; they are the ones who made a mess of the primaries and didnt listen or care about the 18 million people who voted for Hillary; they annointed Obama and pushed the superdelegates to switch to him. I for one will never again give money to the DNC, Howard Dean and his cronies are the cause of their problem; I will write in my vote for Hillary

Peter   June 14th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Democrats in Congress take our money via higher and higher taxes every year to redistribute it to their constituencies or waste it on foolish government programs, and now we are surprised to find out that the DNC convention committee can't manage money properly? Either you are a Democrat or not. I have said on numerous occasions that I understand the hurt & anger from the Clinton supporters but at some point you adjust and go on. The DNC did not give the election to Senator Obama - he won it fair and square. As far as the DNC funds go - I'm sure the Obama supporters will step up to the plate and help them out the same way they have Senator Obama. Unlike the Clinton supporters who are always bellyaching about Senator Clinton not winning. If they were such Hilliary Clinton backers - why is she $30 million in debt?

Helen, NY   June 14th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

This is interesting. Barack has lots of money which he collected for his campaign. He should pay $30.- million to Hillary's campaign and another $15.- million to DNC. Barack does not need money anymore because he can go upto the convention. After that he will have a big fall. He has no resume whatsoever to become our president. CNN, you do not have to moderate my comments. Please make sure that you publish them as they are.

Amy from MIchigan   June 14th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

Wouldn't it be nice in these tough economic times for the Democratic party to scale down the convention? I think it would show the American people some respect if the party spent their (our) money wisely and with restraint. We don't need confetti, matching hats, or balloons to herald in the Obama years! Spending millions on a convention when millions of Americans are struggling is a disgrace.

Carmen, Ret Vet Florida   June 14th, 2008 2:59 pm ET

Go and ask Dean and Obama for some money. Specially Obama he has a good friend name Pesko with money. How about Oprah , Martin and Donna Bazile?.

Another good one that could help the DNC "judas" Gov. Richardson.

Dukeboards
Do you think the race between Obama and Hillary was fair game? We all agree there is always a winner in any contest, but a win has to be fair. This race was not fair in any way you look at it. The Media never questioned Obama's experience and readiness to be president of the United States! Just being a Community Organizer and an eloquent speaker is not enough, by any standards, to lead this great country. The Media went after Hillary's experience despite the fact that she has been a public servant for over 35 years. Between the two, Hillary has a grasp of events a round the world and how to turn this hailing economy around. She understands every bit of the governance. Obama will be like Bush; always depending on advisors!

joe   June 14th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

Nora #1: "DEMS were too busy giving their input on superdelegates and how to cater to Hillary and what she felt that she was entitled to."

Oooooh cult Obama get over it….you still want to make it ALL Hillary's fault…if your Messiah loses…let me guess — Hillary's fault. (Of course that and racism too — don't forget that anything said questioning the new coming is clearly racist).

DNC you are a bunch of idiots — with Dean at the top of that loser list. You are going down and so is your supposed wonder boy.

Will   June 14th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

Obama's killing the rest of the Democratic Party's machinery here. People line up to donate to his fundraisers, but the rest of the fundraisers for his party suffers - this could be bad for the campaigns of some of the local and state candidates as well.

Denver resident   June 14th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

Mayor Hickenlooper had better be prepared for EXTREME public scrutiny if one CENT of Denver taxes go to the DNC. The press is ready to pounce. After all, he can't even figure out how to keep Denver's roads clear of snow between November and April. I don't have great faith in his ability to keep the Dems out of Denver's coffers.

And by the way, dukeboards, the DNC debacle will seem TEENY compared with what will happen if the U.S. goes the way of socialized health insurance. Go live in the U.K. for a few years, where taxes are very high and everyone is covered by the state's insurance program…and where those of us who would afford it bought private insurance anyway. The answer is LESS insurance, not MORE. If we create a market for health care, prices will be much more realistic and affordable. Take a look at services like plastic surgery or lasic eye correction, which are NOT controlled by insurance and are a fraction of the cost they were just five years ago.

People who get on these boards claiming to be HRC supporters who will now for McCain are posers. It is an effort by Republicans to convince democrats that our candidate "isn't strong enough." Just look at some of the names the post as, "beach gurl"? Think about it. Ridiculous and hilarious. The numbers don't lie, nor do democratic values, or the fact that McSame couldn't have a stronger record against THE CONSTITUTIONAL WOMAN'S RIGHT TO CHOOSE. See you in November.

B Wingler   June 14th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

DELSA LEISE   June 14th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

I mean, if we can count Florida and Michigan, then, Obama did not win legitimately. Consequently, Hillary had more votes and delegates than him . This primary elections did not reflect the reality on democrats voters. Hillary's victory was ripped off. I've decided for me NOT TO VOTE. I feel very dissapointed because she was taken out of the race.

FactCheck   June 14th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Cinton couldn't even keep her own campaign's finances straight. Get it over!

Former Clinton Supporter   June 14th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Why do you people keep repeating the same thing. This has nothing to do with Obama or Clinton or any of the other candidates that ran. This has to do with fundraising and the DNC will raise the money.

bob in LA   June 14th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Sounds to me less time should have been spent trying to get Hillary out of the race and more time getting their act together.
Of course they also wasted a great sum of money on the Florida/Michigan debacle which was also thier mess.
If Dems hope to win in November they need to remove all members of this committee and start over. They are pathetic.

Just make sure you're content with losing the right to choose, having your grandchildren still fighting Bush's war, losing your homes to McCain advisor Phil Gramm's one man mortgage crisis, and being on your own finding health insurance that doesn't cover anything."

How can anyone claiming to have been a clinton supporter find anything in McCain to support. Your candidate lost get over it and move on!

since obama stole the nomination from hillary, he should fork up the full amount since this is nothing more than a show piece for his benefit.

Cindy   June 14th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Ok, I think the real answer is this…

Don't spend money you don't have. Denver just needs to tighten it's belt and cut back on the glitz… the unnecessary things in the convention. Don't do it fancy if you don't have the money for it.

When Obama started his campaign, he didn't have the money. He started with a frugal campaign. He only spent big bucks when he had the big bucks.

When Hillary started running out of money, she kept on spending more money. Denver needs to follow the Obama model, not the Clinton model.

Spend within your means. Adjust your budget. And actually, it sounds like they're already doing just that.

Joe   June 14th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

I am a republican who is voting democratic. If the republicans put up someone worth voting for I would vote republican. At least you have one of the two best candidates in the primary running in the general election. You democrats need to get over yourselves and stop crying and fighting over who should be the nominee. You Hillary fans need to get on board because if you vote for the republican or stay home, it will be a sad day for this country. I voted for George Bush and I wish I can take back my vote, but I have to pay the price for my messup. Do you want to pay the price by voting for McCain?

Hillary supporters need to learn how to read the subject for each story! Please… go vote for McCain. He will need your support and don't forget…with your support he will need money! Don't short change him like you did with your love for Hillary… meaning you are mouth only for support… no cash!

The DNC plans will go forward!

Go Obama! I am so happy you won!

Illiteracy? The children left behind? Read the article; it's not the DNC that's running with a deficit. Stop reading into it what you want it to be and stick with the facts, people.

Abby   June 14th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

WELL - too bad - maybe IF the DNC had of ELECTED the best qualified candidate - they would have lots of $$$$.
I know MILLIONS of Hillary supporters will not give one cent to the DNC - they will be lucky to exist after November. They are hardly the party for the people - think they have proven that!

And - yes, we can read - the Hillary supporters are highly educated and know a scam when we see/read it!

Charlotte   June 14th, 2008 2:33 pm ET

The DNC will never get another dime of my money. Let the highly educated, wealthy Obummer supporters cough up the dough. This high school graduate, watched the DNC throw this election to Obummer. Howard Dean and Nancy Pelosi tried to force Hillary out of the primaries before the votes were all in. Kennedy, Kerry and Richardson went against the will of their constitutents and backed Obummer. The DNC put pressure on other delegates to attempt to end the race and support Obummer with an eight of a mile left in the race. The Kennedys and Kerrys have loads of money, let them pay for their mistakes. I will write Hillary on my ballot in November, and I urge all of her supporters to do the same.

James   June 14th, 2008 2:33 pm ET

Enough of all these disgusting comments from Hillary supporters, The Loser could not even finance her own campaign, she was $20 Million in red more than half is her own personal money which she wants back, si everything is just bussiness to her, and all of you are so stoned to see the real thing,… In fact we don't really care if every Hillary supporters vote for Mc Same or don't even vote at all,…. Guess who would bepaying over $5 for a gallon of gas, and why should we stay in Iraq for another 100 years? when just 5 years has already cost over 2 Trillion already? so it is your call…… vote for whatever you want but please JUST SHUT UP…… we've had enough of you losers blaming somebody else

sorry to break your dear heart, but we don't need selfish Hilary.
Go ahead vote for McCain if you like, let me remind you there was only ONE VOTE SHORT to OVERTURN Roe v. Wade.

Let me remind you that 50 mil Americans have no healthcare. And 50 percent of high school students drop out every year. We are spending 100k EVERY MINUTE on the war, and this money is not raised by taxes, but by borrowing more into the defeicit…

NOW GO AHEAD VOTE FOR MCCAIN AND DON"T WORRY ABOUT US.

WE ARE GOING TO NOMINATE OBAMA AND MAKE HIM PRESIDENT IN THE FALL

YOU CAN STAY ON THE SIDELINES, i have no problem with that.

Brian   June 14th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

What good is the convention going to do and why in the world would it cost $40M in the first place? If you're gonna raise money, do something useful. This is a great example of how Dems just spend other people's money as though people didn't work hard to earn it. Stop taking my money and giving it to someone else. I can choose who I want to give it to myself, I don't need your Socialist party to do it for me. It's cool if you spend your own money on that stupid convention but if you use tax dollars, you have another thing coming.

MIKE   June 14th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

TO ALL OF THE IDIOT POSTERS HERE:
THIS PROBLEM DOES NOT CONCERN THE DNC, THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY OR OBAMA.
A CITY IS SELECTED TO HOST THE CONVENTION BASED ON BIDS AND PRESENTATIONS BY VARIOUS CITIES. THE CITY GOVERNMENT MAKES THE BID. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE LOCAL BID COMMITTEE TO COME UP WITH THE MONEY. IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS IF THE LOCAL COMMITTEE DOESN'T COME UP WITH THE $$$$ NEEDED.
SURE HOPE THE CITIZENS OF DENVER ARE NOT LEFT HOLDING THE BAG.
THIS IS JUST ONE INSTANCE OF CITY GOVERNMENT BEING INVOLVED IN THINGS THAT THEY SHOULDN'T BE INVOLVED IN. OTHER THINGS ARE BUILDING BALL PARKS AND ARENAS THAT DO NOT BENEFIT THE PEOPLE - ONLY THE RICH AND POWERFUL.

BLASTING IGNORANCE   June 14th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

TJ-
you truly are ignorant

Former Clinton Supporter   June 14th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Clinton, Obama, and all the rest of the top Democrats should help out with the fundraisers.

Debbie   June 14th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Maybe all the 19 year old doe-eyed Obama girls can hold a bake sale. You know, since they're now so involved in the political process and everything.

Bradley Schaubs, Greeley, CO   June 14th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

I have complete confidence in Mayor Hickenlooper's abilities.

Dems '08

Crush Rush   June 14th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Whats wrong mister moderator,we cant tell the truth today?

jm   June 14th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

Yes, I'm sure if Hillary was the nominee, all would be well in the land, they would have billions of dollars in excess after the DNC, and she would beat McCain by 30% in each state. You "democrats" make me sick. Go ahead and vote for McCain instead and enjoy four/eight years of the same old song and dance.

Jackie   June 14th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

Many of Hillary supporters felt it was unfair the way the dnc conducted their business. as a voter from Michigan I have always contributed but not this time. My vote was worth more than a half a vote and what the dnc did was unfair. they created their own Mess. I would rather not vote than give my money to those crooks who care nothing of the american people and what they want.

Thomas   June 14th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

It's a shame that everyone is quick to jump on the DNC bashing bandwagon, when it has nothing to do with the DNC. Perhaps we could get a headline change to "DNC -Contracted- Convetion Committee faces $15 million shortfall". Hopefully the people that only read the headlines wouldn't become confused, when posting their comments.

TonyNJHC   June 14th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

If things were done fair and square in the first place, there would not be any money problems. You folks better get Hillary back before your ship is totally under water. My household received (3) THREE requests for funds recently. After observing the undemocratic practices of the DNC, additional requests for funds will meet with the same fate as the last (3), Nil, nothin, got that!

Mike, Syracuse, NY   June 14th, 2008 2:22 pm ET

Why do they need a convetion? The messiah has arrived. Just put a crown on Obama and be done with it. It's not like them Dems are going to wake up at the convention and realize they've nominated someone completely unqualified.

For Mike. You are correct. The Reps have appointed the first black Supreme Court justice, the first black Sec. of Defense and Sec. of State, the first black NSA and the first black Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. The Dems are the do as I say, not as I do party when it comes to race.

Turquoise, you're just delusional. Seek professional psychiatric help soon.

DEMOCRAT FOR MCCAIN   June 14th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

its called kharma…

this is what dean and obama get for manipulating our primary

season…

the silent majority voting republican first time like many others

Chris in Vegas   June 14th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

Hell i saved a bunch of money by switching my insurance to geico, I will give the difference to the DNC.

Les-Wa   June 14th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

Many lifelong democrats and big supporters of DNC when it comes to fundraising, QUIT sending money to the DNC when they've SELECTED their nominee instead of popular vote. This news has been going on for TWO WEEKS, it was reported in real politics. In fact DNC planned two dozen parties to welcome delegates to the convention, now they'll just have one block party due to shortage of funds.

I'm a DISGRUNTLED LIFELONG DEMOCRAT who abandoned my party due to its undemocratic act. When a party doesn't listen to me anymore because I am just a single voice; then, they I have no other recourse but to leave the party. For the first time in my life, I've donated money to REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE.

WE WILL REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER.

kevin   June 14th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

This typical white guy sent his DNC envelope back empty this yr.

After 45 yrs. BYE BYE DEM party. Hello MCCain !!

Al   June 14th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

These are the folks (democrats) who control the congress, senate, and now want to control the White House?! It's no wonder America is looking for leadership. They can't balance their own checkbooks without looking for a handout from their lost supporters.

Griffin   June 14th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

Good, I hope the pandering cowards go broke and lose disastrously in November. They have sent me many e-mails begging for money, but as long as they're ignoring their own (now former) supporters, and trying to shove that fraud Obama down our throats, they'll never get a penny or a vote from me. I'm voting for the lesser evil in November, which means voting Republican for the first time in my life. Go McCain!

Chris in Vegas   June 14th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

good to see the Hillary supporters are still blind as to what happened in the primaries. 18 million voted for hillary, what the other 18million that voted for Obama, So if hillary had all superdelegates switch to her side and win, then 18mill obama supporters will feel the same. I really dont care for either one, but i will still vote for my party. Pulling the handle for Mccain is like putting a loaded gun to my head

Mary - Independent   June 14th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Good planning DNC! Where you not checking with the Host Committee in Denver? Take up a collection!

John Zeger   June 14th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Obama seems to have no problems raising money. Let him finance the converntion.

Coby Austin, Texas   June 14th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

You people are still mad that Hillary did not get the nomination. Stop freakin crying! It is what it is! "I will never vote for Obama, I'll vote for McCain"! SO DONT! SOMEONE ELSE WILL. TALK ABOUT "BITTER"! WE DONT WANT YOUR VOTE ANYWAY!
