Sen. Barack Obama holds a town hall meeting with residents in Wayne, Pennsylvania, on Saturday.

(CNN) — Sen. Barack Obama told voters in Wayne, Pennsylvania, on Saturday that he'll cut taxes for the middle class, raise taxes for the wealthy and pour more money into what he calls green energy.

Later Saturday, in Illinois, Obama helped fill sandbags near the Mississippi River in an area devastated by flooding, his campaign said. The same day, Sen. John McCain extended his sympathies to those affected by flooding in the Midwest.

According to his campaign, Obama wants to invest $150 billion over the next 10 years to establish a green energy sector; create a national low-carbon fuel standard to ensure that the fuel is more efficient, and invest in clean energies like solar, wind and biodiesel.

That, according to the campaign, would create up to 5 million new green energy jobs.

Obama also blasted McCain, the presumptive GOP presidential candidate, for his recent silence on energy reform and his support for a gas tax holiday.

"He isn't offering any solutions to help Americans pay for high gas prices. Instead, he's proposing a gas tax holiday that's nothing more than a Washington stunt," Obama said. "I was for the idea back then, but I've learned from my mistake, because I don't think it's right to say you're offering families relief when you're just boosting oil company profits."

Obama says McCain's gas tax plan would "actually do real harm" and take "$3 billion a month out of the highway trust fund and hand it over to the oil companies."

Obama more favorable globally for President.
Wake up everyone, poll on MSNBC shows Obama leading it the world and 1% behind McCain in the states. What is our problem here in the US of A? Why can't we see what the world sees?

McCain to old to help put down sandbags. Once you get that age, all you can do is talk and pray that you remembered what you said.

Making America 'Green' a.k.a communist, will raise taxes, oil prices, housing prices, etc. Just be quiet already, Obama; you obviously don't have the slightest idea of how the economy works.

TexasLady   June 14th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

And where will Obamanation find the extra money? Hmmmmm? I'll bet by raising taxes on thos of us who worked our backsides off without government help to get where we are.

Jen, CA   June 14th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

It always amuses me to see Obama with that "authoritative" look when, as usualy he says nothing, just like during the debates. "Blasts"? Don't think so (just more CNN literary license). In reality, Obama is more like THE MOUSE THAT ROARED!

All of a sudden the junior senator from Illinois is a know-it-all because the media elected him nominee. The junior senator from Illinois runs on ego.

Belle   June 14th, 2008 4:54 pm ET

Obama is always blasting someone! What he needs to do is explain his policies, not blast and steal ideas from someone else. But I forget, he doesn't need a plan; he is god. He can hope for a solution for all the ills of the world.

We are all pretty sure that Obamas "tax plan" harms something as well or is he just going to pull the money out of his butt?
Both plans are pretty much the same so why is it that Senator Obama (who I voted for by the way) practicing "politics as usual" when he SWORE he would not do this, that is why I voted and now I will NEVER give him my support, he has flat out lied to us all…

And the DNC, spending all that money for a party just to announce the nominee???? WE ALREADY KNOW WHO IT IS… GIVE THE MONEY TO THE PEOPLE WHO NEED IT… LIKE THE FLOOD VICTIMS WHO HAVE LOST EVERYTHING…

Selfish slobs all of them….

jaye   June 14th, 2008 4:57 pm ET

Senator Obama is a very smart man, and John McCain is not.
Senator Obama finds solutions, while John McCain is nothing but a panderer, and that pandering is nothing but Washington politics at its best.

Investing money over the next 10 years to create a green energy ssector is good, but it won't do anything to reduce the price of gas today or tomorrow. What is Obama going to do to reduce the price of oil and gas NOW? Obama does not want to do anything about the high price of gas. At least McCain wants to put a few dollars back in the pockets of working Americans. Maybe McCain's idea doesn't amount to much, and it won't solve the problem, but it is still more than what Obama is offering. When Obama comes out and discusses his position on drilling for more oil in the US, nuclear power, and other things that can be done in the short term, then he'll be talking.

Mike H   June 14th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

Protect ANWAR forever. Develop cellulosic ethanol synthesis and cyanobacter oil production as alternatives to petroleum energy. We need petroleum more for the chemical industry anyway.

It's a new idea about women in particular and families in general.
Pregnant women or women having new borns who work do not get enough maternity leave allowing them to take care of themselves and their babies. They have to go back to work in one or two weeks after they deliver babies otherwise they loose their jobs. America expects many things from these babies for the future, they should be well treated by their moms for at least one year and then go to day care to allow their moms to work.

Winthorp   June 14th, 2008 5:25 pm ET

Wow, imagine that. A candidate actually focusing on issues instead of just saying things without substance.

sue   June 14th, 2008 5:26 pm ET

If America has truly sunken to the depth required to first BELIEVE this man is anything more than a huckster, and second ,can actually DO ANYTHING he says he can or will, then…quite simply, we are truly already too far gone here and doomed . The country DESERVES a snake oil salesman like him if they actually elect him

Jayson   June 14th, 2008 5:27 pm ET

Most politicians are a joke when it comes to our energy policy. The government prefers to send money to countries who give money to terrorists instead of drilling in the US and being able to collect royalties on that oil production to spend on alternative fuel source research. Also many of the countries we get our oil from could care less about damage to the environment since they are more concerned about making money. But what do you expect from people who lay the blame solely on the oil companies instead of acknowleding the fact that they are contributing to the problem. The same could be said for the problems in the housing market since they were so set on keeping the economy soaring that they threw common sense to the wind instead of stepping in when people were being given interest only loans that they could only afford with the teaser rate.

David Newport, OR   June 14th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Growing up, I remember gas at 19.9 during the gas wars of the late 60's. Yes, that is 19.9 cents/ gallon. I agree that if we put 1 yr worth of what we are spending in Iraq into research we could be well on our way of freeing ourselves of this burden IF we do not give that money to the companies already in control (automotive and oil). But understand, there is a bigger problem and it has to do w/ our financial system as it is. The price of oil is linked to the US dollar since that is the currency it is sold in. Everytime our dollar drops in value (compared to the Yen or Euro) oil prices have to go up. Until we fix our economy…oil will continue to rise.

Jason, Texas   June 14th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

it will be easy to take McCain down on energy. the Republicans have no clue how to fix this without lining their oil soaked pockets….

Mitch   June 14th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

Jack Mehoff, Orlando   June 14th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

Why is Obama leading McCain by only 5-6 points when Bush's unfavorable ratings are 60%+ and McCain is 4 more years of Bush???

Guess people don't like Obama. Maybe that's why the DNC is short $15 million for their convention.

I love how people feel the need to comment on this article, referencing other articles, and taking them totally out of context, and moreover, completely misreading them. Brittany, the DNC isn't short the money, it is the company that is hosting it that has the shortcomings. But that's alright, as long as people have the ability to continually smear and contort the facts in favor of divisive politics. That's the American way.

Double standards, mmm, deliciously ironic. Much in the same way that the members of McCain's team have taken "sweetheart loans" from or have special relationships with Fannie May. Love me some hypocrisy.

I would like to see it though. If I can find it I know that you're people are resourceful enough to print the story….

To all the Hillary supporters:
Indeed what the democrats are saying about McCain and his political policies are correct , however what else does he have to run on ?
Obama has more of the right stuff to argue about as Democrats, but I really do believe that McCain will change a lot of his views on things if we really back him plus it would be hard to do anything with a democratic congress.
The Supreme court Judges will have to stay active for four more years in which they could.
Things would not be as bad as people think with McCain. He is not my first choice but better then Obama this man has not a clue, he does everything half way before moving on to other things for political gain, look at his record. McCain will work both sides he has nothing to lose and he is a fair man. Think about it…lets put Hillary in 2012

Hey you were a hero and fine public servant McFlipFlop BUT —- you are confused who helped Bush get us into this mess. I like that strategy. It can work for national security, economy, health care, social security, education, and just about any political topic of the day, including energy and taxes.

Sounds like they have very little or I would contend NOTHING to work with in what is appealing about McCain's agenda.

I believe if we invest more in green energy, instead of basing the foundation of our energy sector on oil profits, then America can truly transition into a phase where we can once again, live in harmony with this beautiful country we live in. That is the American way, not tax breaks and environmental degradation from the elites.

Thus if Obama pours even a little bit of investment into this green energy sector, and ignite innovation that will free us from 20th century oil.

Christ bless you all.

Charlotte   June 14th, 2008 6:39 pm ET

And who voted for the Cheney energy bill? Obama is a joke. I think he is the biggest flip-flopper ever.

The Tax Man   June 14th, 2008 6:39 pm ET

For all of you who hate GW, you should take some time to at least acknowledge that if he did anything right during his eight years in office, it was to implement his tax plan. Since the implementation of the plan, overall tax revenues have been on the rise and capital expenditures have exceeded the expenditures. Most economists agree that without the plan, we would be in a much steeper economic decline. Every time taxes are cut (and they were cut accross the board - not just to the rich), revenues increase. If Obama were not so inexperienced and dead set against any ideas from the other side, he would extend the tax cuts and use the increased revenue to fund all the socialist programs he wants to implement.

Keep Doing Your Own Town Halls Without Mccain! Keep Punching Him From A Distance And Let Him Make His Own Mistakes At His Meetings! Then Punch Him Some More The Next Day! And So Americans Dont Forget, Remind Them About All The Dumb Things He Says That Put Him Out Of Touch With The People! Then Hold One Debate In Front Of Thousands Of People To Deliver The Knock Out Blow! I Can Hardly Wait!

Did you hear that at a campaign rally recently Obama healed a crippled child, and made a blind woman see! Also, I heard that at a McCain rally 'McBush' actually ate the head off of a live chicken!

C'mon people - enough with the Messiah and Satan characteristics. If Obama's elected do you really think that the world is going to turn for the better overnight? The President isn't the emperor - that person still has to get their ideas approved by Congress. I am about to gag from both sides' lack of humility in this campaign.

McCain need to make a difference and convince American people before the Democratic convention otherwise a prolonged fight could be detrimental.

This whole fraud nomination process should have stopped long ago but who knows we had to see it with our own eyes first. Look out for more fraud.

Brittany try actually reading the articles that you want to comment on! The DNC does not need the money! The city of Denver needs the money! You must be one of the uneducated voters. I don't mind that you can't follow the topic…the story is about energy proposal from Obama but at least be somewhat informed.

Simply, rather than bash Obama or McCain on issues for which many of you are posting don't seem to have a clue and basing them on your own ignorance - please just go to their perspective websites and learn about the issues!
Learn about taxes, healthcare, economy, womens' rights, war, education, social security read who has the better plan regarding issues!

Sue   June 14th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

Obama's plan sounds great–to invest $150 BILLION in more environmentally favorable alternatives. However, the key word in the report above is that Obama "wants." He can "want" all day long, but good luck on getting that done. Many Americans don't care about alternative fuels, and dismiss that as an important issue when electing their representatives. Our system is such that the President can't unilaterally implement a $150 Billion plan. He needs the support of Congress, and rightly so. The problem is that we are all complacent and don't insist on telling our congressmen what we want, and we don't back up our talk with votes. We put more energy into keeping up with the goings on of Paris Hilton and "Brangelina." We just can't wait to see the precious pictures of Brangelina's twins. How about putting some effort into our own children's futures–or for that matter, our own immediate situations?

Nick   June 14th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

I think it's interesting how people are blasting Obama for lack of experience. He has just about as much experience if not more than GWB had when he ran for president, and apparently that was enough because we elected him twice. And for those saying he is a hypocrite for supporting the tax holiday, and now being against it: check your facts. It's not like he has flip-flopped in this campaign just to pick up more votes. He supported it while in the Illinois state legislature and then realized it was pretty much a hoax. I'd rather have a president who learns from his mistakes and wises up instead of sticking with their mistakes and dragging everyone down. (i.e. GWB and McCain over the Iraq war)

ward   June 14th, 2008 6:54 pm ET

Where have these readers been hiding. All of these anti-Obama comments are so entirely out of whack, their originators must be spending their time out of country or getting their opinions from the likes of Limbaugh or the Inquirer. Wake up people and vote for Obama. Try overcoming your petty bigotry and do what's best for the USA.

TXBad1   June 14th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Obama, wow they are already working on what you are wanting, you must of had an internet enlightening and what about Hydrogen , Military is testing and runs off water even better than others! HILLARY 12!

Lisa   June 14th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

To the Obama supporters, has Obama accepted a debate aganist Senator Mccain yet? I understand that he was scared to debate Hillary. I cannot believe he's scared to debate Mccain though. He's not going to be able to use that car salesman line that he's already debated 20 times. To be honest to become the President of this country it shouldn't matter if you had to debate 100 times you are suppose to be for the people, not out for yourself.

chere   June 14th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

Obama is inexperienced talks alot of eloquent fluff, while he may speak of higher taxes on the wealthy, it wont happen, he's saying what the people who made him a frount man tell him to say..he's fall up under the authority of the money masters and march to the beat of their drum if elected.
There's no way he isnt going to do the same exact thing John McCain
is proposing he'll do. The only difference is John Mcshame is telling the truth & Obama is so green he has the audacity of hoping to actually having a say in anything. If these 2 all Americans can cream up ..the dream's a nightmare. I havent seen one Obama sign in my state and no Mcshame's either but I did see the Paul signs, and driving home I even seen a headquarters that Said "Ron Paul"
The American sheep are dumb. Reminds me of that verse "They are as lambs lead to the slaughter."

First off, I want to show my support to a Man that demonstrated what responsible media should be. He brought our voices to the table, and he was the kind of man who proved that asking questions was, has and will continue being a natural, noble, and undefeated cause.
