Sen. John McCain has made reaching out to women voters an important factor in his campaign.
Sen. John McCain has made reaching out to women voters an important factor in his campaign.

WASHINGTON (AP) — John McCain has called off a fundraiser at the home of a Texas oilman who joked about rape during a 1990 gubernatorial run in the state.

The Texan, Republican Clayton Williams, made the joke during his failed campaign against Democrat Ann Richards. Williams compared rape to the weather, saying, "As long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it."

He also compared Richards to the cattle on his ranch, saying he would "head her and hoof her and drag her through the dirt."

Williams' comments made national news at the time and remain easy to find on the Internet. Even so, McCain's campaign said it hadn't known about the remarks.

"These were obviously incredibly offensive remarks that the campaign was unaware of at the time it was scheduled," McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said. "It's positive that he did apologize at the time, but the comments are nonetheless offensive."

The campaign said it would not return money Williams had raised for McCain because the contributions came from other individuals supporting McCain and not from Williams. Williams told his hometown newspaper, the Midland Reporter-Telegram, that he had raised more than $300,000 for McCain.

Democrats said McCain should give back the money: "Senator McCain's claim of ignorance is no excuse for refusing to do the right thing now. Offensive, disgusting comments like these cannot be tolerated," Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Karen Finney said.

The flap comes as McCain's campaign reaches out to women and to backers of Democrat Hillary Clinton. McCain began a women-focused outreach effort in recent days, sending a well-known female supporter, former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, to campaign in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The Washington Post said the campaign, when it initially was contacted by the Post and ABC News, questioned why the story was newsworthy; later in the day, the campaign canceled the fundraiser, which had been scheduled for Monday.

Republicans also have criticized McCain's Democratic rival, Barack Obama, for failing to vet an adviser, Jim Johnson, who resigned when questions about his home mortgage deals involving
Countrywide Financial Corp. became a distraction for Obama. McCain had accused Obama of hypocrisy for speaking out against Countrywide's role in the subprime mortgage crisis.

Richards defeated Williams to serve one term as Texas governor; she lost re-election in 1994 to George W. Bush. Richards died in 2006 after a battle with esophageal cancer.

Sharon Minnesota   June 14th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

John McCain is an honorable man. I'm happy to see that at least one Republican will stand up for women and their dignity. It's completely unfair to lump him in with all the former conservatives who made a mockery out of the word conservative. To be fair, we need to listen to Sen. McCain and give him credit for being a stand up guy when it comes to women's rights. Ms. Richards would be proud of John McCain's defense of her dignity.

When Clayton Williams made these remarks, it was a time when women were just getting their footing on equal rights. Times have changed dramatically from then to now and most of us are disgusted with that kind of rhetoric. I'm sure there are still some Neanderthals out there who would get a laugh from his nasty comments.

jack   June 14th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

Clayton is a scumbag for saying this about women. But he is "right on", about what will happen to the GOP in Nov. Because they are going to have to lay back and accept the inevitable…."that their canidate is going to get pounded at the polls."

No republican in their right mind would risk a political career in this election cycle. McCain's desperation to be the nominee was an answer to the GOP prayers. A person willing to run….knowing he will lose.

Count the seats held by the republicans in congress. Then in Nov. count again and see how many fewer "R's" there will be.

Have the Republicans heard this one? "You reap what you sow"

LT for Obama   June 14th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

So as you put it McCain, why are you not denouncing this person?

That's right because we all know that the candidates need to focus on the issues and not have to denounce every person who has said something vile and offensive.

The next time one of Obama's supporters has been found out to have said something offensive, I don't want to see a bunch of posts and media demanding his denouncement of that person. So long as he lets us know that person's views are not his own and moves on to the real issues, that should be more than satisfactory. No more double standards for these candidates.

James CA   June 14th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

Very disgusting in more than one way. First and foremost he is sexist and offensive. Second he's an oilman, how can you fundraise with an oilman at time like this. Talk about conflict of interests. Yeah you so called 'ex democrats' will still come out and say how great McCain is. Money has become the most important element in elections so you'd better watch where the candidates money is coming from. Undoubtable McCain's trying to get his hands in the pockets of corporations and oil companies while pretending to be anti-lobbyist.

tigerakabj   June 14th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

So McCain, you don't agree with what he said, but you are willing to take the $300,000 he raised for you?

Not surprising. You dumped Rev. Parsley and Hagee when you got their endorsements (and later the votes). You are still trying to get rid of lobbyists in your campaign, yet you accepted their money beforehand.

In other words, once you reaped the benefits of these people, it is now ok to reject their endorsement of you. So what else is new.

No matter, you will still be bankrupted by Barack both financially and politically. Another day, another flip-flop.

All the women who backed Hilary and who are declaring their vote will go to McCain, take note of this disturbing story. Even I remember when this Texas yahoo made those horrific comments, and the McCain campaign didn't know of them? Recall that McCain left his first wife for his current one (to put it politely). And I dunno if it's true or not, but a new book on McCain claims that in one of his famous fits of temper, he called his wife a foul 4-letter word that begins with a "c." So by all means, if after seeing the sexism Hilary faced (from the media, not Sen. Obama), you choose to vote for McCain, it's your choice. An inexplicable choice, especially since his views are mostly incompatible with hers, but it's yours to make.

Sammy   June 14th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

I didnt know about this story as I didnt really follow politics very much at the time. The idea that McCains people either did not know or didnt think was a big deal is a major blunder and neither possibility is acceptable. They should face some public flak from the senator. But we know thats not how the game is played so one or two will fall of their swords.

I herd that the other town hall meetings were hand selected by the McWar group, but I decided to sign up for the one going on today.

I wanted to be fair but ask why he supports the Bush tax cuts when he was against them before and why he would continue a tax plan that has helped to put us into bad economic times.

Yet I was not a hand picked by McWar. The idea of a town hall meeting is that the people can ask questions NOT McWar's HAND PICKED PEOPLE!

McWar's straight talk bus cant seem to drive straight at all!

BV   June 14th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

How is it that McCains campaign didn't know of the remarks made by Clayton Williams and or Rev. John Hagee? McCain outright courted the Rev. John Hagee in order to obtain his indorsement and when Rev. Hagee's controversial remarks were brought to light he then distanced himself from him. He now contends that he knew nothing of what Clayton Williams said, when it was a National news item. Could it be that he agreed with Williams remarks so they didn't seem relevant? Yet he has brought up over and over the crap about Obama and his church. A church that Obama may have belonged to for 20 years, but only attended for approx. 5 years as he lived in different areas of the country. I think that McCain should take a good look in the mirror and start paying of his and Cindy's credit card debt. How utterly disgraceful. He talks about how elite Obama's attitude is. What would you be needing to incur that kind of debt? This really scares me as he promises to get the American economy back on track. How?

Clayton "Claytie" Williams……………..made the joke during his failed 1990 campaign for governor against Democrat Ann Richards. No matter how they spin it McBush knew about this. Just goes to prove how he feels about women, and the fundraiser would have gone on if the media did not bring this up. Did McBush return at least His contribution? I think not. This is the man people want in the White House? I think not.

Diane   June 14th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Why didn't McCain go a head with the fund raiser and hammer the point: He doesn't work for me, He doesn't speak for me? Obama calims that and people are more than okay with his responses.

katiec   June 14th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Canceling the fundraiser smells like politics. The problem is that McCain is friends with this man.

How could any woman vote for him?

Branden Patterson   June 14th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

I can't believe that John McCain is criticizing Barack Obama for his VP vetters (Jim Johnson among others) by calling him a hypocrite, when he has blatantly recieved funds from a man who degrades women like Clayton "Claytie" Williams. Who is the real hypocrite? Well it's none other that John McBush. I hope the Obama campaign pounds him on this one.

John McCain sucks he needs to give back the money and cut all ties does this guy think rape is a joke.

Pathetic

Texas for Obama   June 14th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

McCain needed the money so he decides to take the chance to continue the fundraiser in case people forgot about Clayton's comments. But since Clayton has been exposed once again by the media, McCain then decides to cancel the fundraiser and saying "Oh we didnt know".

Nice Try McCain.

Keeping It Real!   June 14th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

I would bet money that McCain knew about the comments made by the Texan but thought the media wouldn't call him out on it since it's obvious that networks protect him quite often. McCain is not the straight talk express as the media like to tout he is. I use to have a lot of respect for McCain but since he decided to run for president he has completely did a 180 as it pertains to ethics and bounderies. The media needs to point out his mistakes and inconsistancies like they do to Obama. The media is so bias for him to the point that a lot of net works along with CNN has lost a lot of credibility with the American people. McCain lies quite easily and a lot of the American people are starting to pay close attention to him now.

Sheila   June 14th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Dave, Illinois   June 14th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

There you go Hillary supporters who want to go over to the Republican Party. Here is what they think about you.

Brian Knoxville, TN   June 14th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Wow, a politician with principles who will not just take money from such sleazy people, unlike the Democratic so-called leaders, who had to carry a candidate over the finish line because he wasn't able to get there himself, regardless of all his campaign's money.

The DNC decided that they would rather dip into Obama's pot of gold and take as much of the money as possible, regardless of whether or not the guy can or should actually win the general election and regardless of the will of millions of voters who were told they didn't count.

There was a time when the DNC stood on its principles even in the face of losing elections rather than toss out our principles and select an unknown, inexperienced and unqualified candidate in order to carry off a bit of the money-machine's treasure.

Jen, CA   June 14th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Richard, you're an idiot! The one that was "raped" was the Democratic Party - by the DNC.

And we're taking the DNC "to court" in November by voting for John McCain!

Brian Knoxville, TN   June 14th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Politicians who have principles and who will not just take money from such sleazy people still exist?

Judging from the undemocratic Democratic Party's so-called leaders' actions–in selecting a candidate, and in abusing the process to favor that candidate, and even after all that in having to carry that candidate over the finish line because he wasn't able to get there himself, regardless of all his campaign's money–I didn't think such principled politicians existed any more…

The DNC decided that they would rather dip into Obama's pot of gold and take as much of the money as possible, regardless of whether or not the guy can win the general election or should hold an office for which he has no qualifications, and regardless of the will of millions of voters who were told they didn't count, than uphold our principles, like those of full democratic participation and fair reflection.

There was a time when the DNC upheld our principles, even if it meant losing elections. Now the party's so-called leaders just toss them out and select an unknown, inexperienced and unqualified candidate in order to carry off a bit of the money-machine's treasure.

Ironically, this year they could have upheld our principles AND supported the stronger general election candidate and better leader.

Can't believe that he didn't know how awful this fundraisers mouth was and the awful things said about women. Way too many men like this in the Republican party. Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh come to mind to name a few,

I can't stand McCain… but I can't be a hypocrite either. Just like with Obama… I hate the fact that McCain has to answer for what other people say as opposed to himself. We all know people who are offensive, or racist, or ignorant. Judge McCain based off what he says.. not what someone else does. After all.. McCain has plenty of dumb things say :)

It is funny though that McCain runs to people who he wants no part of any affiliation with to raise money for him… Bush, now this guy? Kind of a sell-out if you ask me.

Vig   June 14th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

This is blatant misogeny - not like the veiled misogeny aimed at Clinton by the more "refined" male media - it's all the same - all comes from the same place - some people are just more primitive about it. A woman be President of this country? Clinton got slammed mostly because she is a woman - the media did everything to keep the status quo - keep two males competing for the Presidency. Write in Clinton your November ballot and stop the repression.

Tammy/Indiana   June 14th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

McCain=Women Beware   June 14th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

I don't believe McCain respects women at all. This is more smoke and mirrors with him.

Look at how he voted. He voted against ALL women's issues. He wants to take our rights and choices away.

He's an adulterer, and called his wife a terrible name in public (CNN won't allow it).
Do your homework on the real McCain!

Yup, thought so.

That is correct AMA for Obama. The Obama die hards just can't remember what happens in the dem party only the rep party. Here is a reminder of some of what has happened.

Did you already forget the two "religious" leaders that had hate America flowing out of their mouth. He must really be a hard sleeper during the preaching not to hear what was said for 20 years. Or Oh, I didn't know that real estate guy was crooked.

But look at it this way. If Obama wins you get a black guy and a white guy. Hey! two for one deal.

Trouble is I don't trust McCain either, but he isn't as left leaning as Obama.

Ilona Proud Canadian   June 14th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

John McCain was the cause of two of Barack Obamas campaigners
quitting the Obama Campaign! Now here he is with his fundraiser who has, absolutely no respect for women, (why would this surprise us, John McCain ALSO has no respect for women especially his WIFE CINDY and his FORMER WIFE!)

Sure he has cancelled the fundraiser, but he IS NOT GOING TO RETURN the $300,000 RAISED BY WILLIAMS, BECAUSE THE MONEY CAME FROM OTHER INDIVIDUALS SUPPORTING McCain, AND NOT FROM WILLIAMS! JOHN McCain IS SPLITTING HAIRS, WITHOUT WILLIAMS THIS MONEY WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN DONATED TO McCain.

JOHN McCain SHOULD RETURN THE MONEY AND DENOUNCE WILLIAMS!

Bill Stapp   June 14th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

Eighteen years is a long time to hold someone's words against him. People serve less time in prison for murder.

But I don't believe for a nanosecond that Senator McCain and his campaign did not remember. Why can't they just admit that? Granted they did not think it would be brought up again, but they certainly knew the facts in this matter.

Is this story newsworthy? Not really. But Senator McCain should be as sensitive to this kind of personal history as he seems to be expecting Senator Obama to be.

I think it is going to be a long, hot summer.

Obama Supporter   June 14th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

It seems to me that Mr. John McCain is becoming quite senile in his old age. Do we really want that in our office, representing our country? Bush did enough damage trying to act as the voice for all. Stop the broken record and vote for change, vote Obama.

double standards   June 14th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

If it is Obama , the McCains and the press would make a field day.
Why the double standard? McCain should return the money. It is an insult to the American women.

Bryan   June 14th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

You would figure a campaign spending tens of millions of dollars would at least take the time to do a Google search of somebody at whose house they are scheduling a fundraiser.

Which is why I don't buy this for one second. In my book, McCain's already appalling women's rights record just got a little worse. Of course, we've known for decades, after what he did to his ex-wife, that this guy has little to no respect for women.

Clinton supporters thinking of defecting to McCain: Would you really vote for a "good old boy" sexist over Obama, just because you have a personal grudge against him?

Let's get beyond the petty politics.

I'm sure there are sleazes who support McCain, sleazes who support Obama, and sleazes who support Clinton. But at least McCain renounced the jerk immediately. Obama needed 20 years to figure out that the minister he was listening to was a racist and a socialist.

So…Hillary-supporters-now-voting-for-Mcain…what do you think of your guy now??? Sitll think he has your best interest at heart? The man doesn't even BEGIN to have the remotest clue as to what becoming President of the free world is all about. I daresay he still believes in the old adage "barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen!!! You guys had better wise up quick-fast!!!

Mary   June 14th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

McCain was abusive to his first wife, dumped her when she had a disability, and married a women young enough to be his daughter (very rich, of course). He has clearly stated a mission to over-turn Roe V Wade and opposes funding for abortions for poor women/girls who have been raped (even insest). This is not a man who cares about women's rights.

Darcy - Arkansas   June 14th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

McCain shouldn't have to defend himself from what those who support him say any more than Obama should have to defend himself from what his supporters have said or done.

It is time to skip the "silly season" and hold McCain and Obama's feet to the fire for what they do or do not do. To much time spent putting out Bush fires.

Mccain has shown, by his complete lack of understanding of Iraq, economy, Constitution, by his constant confusion and by the complete lack of judgement (he still thinks the surge is working), that he is not fit to be President. And everyday, there is a little something to remind us of that.

Barbara   June 14th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

If McCain is going to get all moral about insults to women, perhaps he could start with himself and address the way he humiliated and disparaged his own wife in 1999 in front of three reporters, calling her a word that would be grounds for divorce –if not homicide–where I come from.

That she took it and stands beside him today, all Stepford-like, says a lot about both Cindy and John McCain and their mutual ambition to occupy the White House.

Dan, TX   June 14th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Remember, the "birds of a feather flock together" comment applies to everyone. Can anyone say the same thing about Obama without getting trashed?

I thought this article sounded like what the democratic party, media, ets. did to Hillary. I guess some things don't change. Sad….

"Hey Claytie, you are a scumbag not good enough for a visit from me, but thanks for the $300K you raised for me…"

Steve in Durham   June 14th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

Time to put McCain's JUDGMENT to question.

He still kept the money, not having the punch and foods it really does not make any difference. If he was so concern he would return the money.

If this was something an Obama supporter had said, you wouldn't be reporting it, now would you? As we all know, your goal is to see that Obama is elected regardless of what the voters choice may be. How much is the DNC paying you?
CNN - if you are paying Donna Brazile, you sure got your money's worth. She sat there time after time pretending she had not made up her mind about who she was going to support and we, the public, knew she was in Obama's camp. She needs to find a real job and become one of us "blue collar workers", that she seems to find so disgusting.

skunkrat The Marine   June 14th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

This man probably was not VETTED. I know that McSame is going to return the money. To keep it would be totally against his purer than fire standards..
Like the hypocrite he is he will keep the money issue some type of statement justifying his actions.
McShame shut up!

DOH!!!   June 14th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

um…..not much more t o say…..
VOTE OBAMA

Mandi Locke   June 14th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

I was thirteen years old when those comments were made, I hardly ever watched the news, but I still remember the uproar it caused. I find it very hard to believe that nobody from McCain's camp knew about these comments. They were just hoping America had forgotten about them. It only goes to show you where some politicains take their money from. Pretty much from anyone who has it to give and is willing to give it. There are hardly ever ethics attached. McCain is no different.

I may be an Obama supporting left leaning homosexual, but in this case I've got to come to ol Claytie's defense. Good gosh people….He made the remark 18 YEARS ago. Sure it was an incredibly stupid and offensive thing to say, but give me a break! He realized that and apologized. Heck, in all likelihood, it cost him the election! What happened to redemption and second chances in America? But then again, maybe I'm just a another dumb Texan sticking up for a neighbor!

BROOKLYN   June 14th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Good for McCain… It shows that he can make a decision… It would have taken all of the media running stories about it for Obama to do anything (example: Rev, Wright)…

SJ Thornton   June 14th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

I want to hear all the political talk shows beat McCain over the head with! If Obama's fundraiser said anything like this McCain would have a field day with this! How insulting.

Chad   June 14th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

I'm mean really, are we surprised? This is what right wingers do. They protect only themselves, crush anyone who gets in their way and then treat their women like cattle. If you're a woman and still a republican I guess you're used to being treated like cattle. You deserve no better.
Remember: there are only two types of Republicans- Millionaires and suckers.

TexasLady   June 14th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Rob,

Better an "elderly man with bad views on everything" than a young inexperienced wanna be president who won't do a thing but ruin the US.

How long ago did you meet your friends? Did you look up every possible off color or wrong remark that they ever made? Did you? Why, I'll bet you didn't.

And this is going to be a civil campaign - yeah right.
