Sen. John McCain has made reaching out to women voters an important factor in his campaign.
Sen. John McCain has made reaching out to women voters an important factor in his campaign.

WASHINGTON (AP) — John McCain has called off a fundraiser at the home of a Texas oilman who joked about rape during a 1990 gubernatorial run in the state.

The Texan, Republican Clayton Williams, made the joke during his failed campaign against Democrat Ann Richards. Williams compared rape to the weather, saying, "As long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it."

He also compared Richards to the cattle on his ranch, saying he would "head her and hoof her and drag her through the dirt."

Williams' comments made national news at the time and remain easy to find on the Internet. Even so, McCain's campaign said it hadn't known about the remarks.

"These were obviously incredibly offensive remarks that the campaign was unaware of at the time it was scheduled," McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said. "It's positive that he did apologize at the time, but the comments are nonetheless offensive."

The campaign said it would not return money Williams had raised for McCain because the contributions came from other individuals supporting McCain and not from Williams. Williams told his hometown newspaper, the Midland Reporter-Telegram, that he had raised more than $300,000 for McCain.

Democrats said McCain should give back the money: "Senator McCain's claim of ignorance is no excuse for refusing to do the right thing now. Offensive, disgusting comments like these cannot be tolerated," Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Karen Finney said.

The flap comes as McCain's campaign reaches out to women and to backers of Democrat Hillary Clinton. McCain began a women-focused outreach effort in recent days, sending a well-known female supporter, former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, to campaign in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The Washington Post said the campaign, when it initially was contacted by the Post and ABC News, questioned why the story was newsworthy; later in the day, the campaign canceled the fundraiser, which had been scheduled for Monday.

Republicans also have criticized McCain's Democratic rival, Barack Obama, for failing to vet an adviser, Jim Johnson, who resigned when questions about his home mortgage deals involving
Countrywide Financial Corp. became a distraction for Obama. McCain had accused Obama of hypocrisy for speaking out against Countrywide's role in the subprime mortgage crisis.

Richards defeated Williams to serve one term as Texas governor; she lost re-election in 1994 to George W. Bush. Richards died in 2006 after a battle with esophageal cancer.

Lol. And this is the guy ex Clinton supporters are gonna vote for?? Ya'll better pay attention, this is a giy who wants to take away womens rights, called his wife a c^nt, and has a fundraiser who joked about women giving in to being raped.

CB   June 15th, 2008 11:40 am ET

McCain said the reason women don't get equal pay is they need more training!!!!!!!!! Talk about out of touch!

He is an angry, bitter, out-of-touch, stinkin' rich man who has been in done nothing except run a senate office for 25 years.

Kenneth M.   June 15th, 2008 11:40 am ET

I support Obama but this is not something we should harp on. The fact that McCain wanted to do a fund raiser does not mean that he is not a good guy, of sound mind, or should not be respected. Those questions are rased by his stance on policy and inablility to remember who the key players are in the Mid East.

Judy California   June 15th, 2008 11:39 am ET

To all you McBush voters, you cannot sit here and tell me that he did not keep that money from that pig. No wonder he lost the race, and the funny thing to me is that if this would have been Obama, the media would beat this down to the ground. They only reason I can think that the media isn't doing this to John McBush is that he is told old and were told to respect their elders. I say screw that, he is fair game just like Obama is.

It is real unfortunate that people do not realize that McBush is a racist and a sexist, he even called his wife the C word that all women hate. IF he calls his own wife this, then just what does he think of all women. Yes back to the article, I truely believe that he still had a fund raiser in private with that idiot and kept all the money. Go home and retire to your front porch on one of your many homes that you have.

david   June 15th, 2008 11:39 am ET

It really is funny that Mcain who is fully under the influence of lobbyists and out rageous public figures like Clayton Williams….tries to be the president of the great USA….hey we need transparent and positive campaign like that of President Obama….to be honest i don't expect no more than an old politics from the old Mcain. We need a president who lives and shares the terrible moments of the people of the united states of America…look what obama is doing …he is filling sandbags in Illinois town threatened by floods…that is a president in touch with the emotions of the people…..OUT OF TOUCH MCAIN….pleas learn from OBAMA

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

Terry in El Paso   June 15th, 2008 11:32 am ET

Most of you don't seem to realize that if Obama or McCain had planned to hold a fund raiser at your home, either of them would have to cancel because of the obnoxious and thoughtless things that you have posted. Examples:
"We don't need or want Tennessee come November. You backwoods, racist hillbillies can just amuse yourselves playing with your sisters." Elitism, racism, stereotyping.

"Political parties aside, I find the comment made my Williams rather funny. I suppose most people are to up-tight to appreciate a little crude humor" Sees rape as just a little playful sex.

"Give me a break and toss me in the bramble bush, says Br'er Rabbit
when the fox catches him. That is what Br'er Obama wants us to do. Vote him in the office where he can continue to make mistake after mistake. Well I've news for him, we ain't no br'er foxes and we aren't going to elect him." Reminding us all that Obama is Black and that Black people are child-like.

"I really wish all the old and antiquated folks whould just give it up and realize my generation (20/30's) are taking over. Only a matter of time before you all die out!" A charming child, wouldn't you say? I'm sure his parents are thrilled.

Linda31   June 15th, 2008 11:31 am ET

Brian in Knoville, again the DNC did seat the delegates from FL and MI. As for MI, Obama was not on the ballot and you call that a principled primary? When broke the rules in the first place? And give me a break about this, because the Republican party also seated FL with half votes. This process has been in practice for years, so what do you think changed? Because from my view, it is still the same and therefore by your standards, still principled.

While there was sexism towards Clinton, there was/is also racism towards Obama. The thing is, Obama doesn't talk about it because he doesn't want that to be the focus. Do a little research about how his campaign sites are vandalized, people hurling racist comments to volunteers, and inappropriate things being named after him. So don't talkt to me about fair.

MI Democratic party chose to allocate as such because they recognized that it was not a valid primary. Best that they could do. Little know fact, Obama could have won the 50/50 split, but chose to go with 69/59 for party unity.

His support seems pretty strong to me. People encouraged him to run because they belived that he could make a difference. Could that be why you are so scared?

Nancy L-TN   June 15th, 2008 11:28 am ET

Did they cancel the event over this, or because no one was coming anyway? These comments made national news then, but they didn't know? I'll bet they are keeping whatever money the event would have raised, they're just skipping the event itself! Not much of anything in this man to believe in!

Hey, at least McCain knows there aren't 57 states in the U.S. I'd rather have him then someone who knows nothing about our country. We are proud people here in the U.S. We're not all on welfare like Obama seems to think.

would you rather be on welfare before we save our country? or do it now before things get any worse and you actually end up on welfare? vote obama.

I hope that everyone who thinks McCain supports women's rights will investigate his treatment of his first wife. It was shameful. After surviving a horrible car accident that disfigured her and resulted in 23 surgeries, she was abandoned by McCain, who had an affair with his current wife, Cindy and married her three weeks after his divorce was final.

well put jim i will never vote for mccain….

Mauri   June 15th, 2008 11:13 am ET

So much for the so-called biases and prejudices against Obama. If Obama had one-fifth the knowledge of this great American patriot, John McCain, his candidacy would be worth considering. But he doesn't, and nowhere, no time, does this show than when he makes such negative remarks about McCain's age. Obama obviously does not want the votes of Hillary's "old" women supporters, because when he makes such derogatory remarks about McCain being old and confused — he offends the very constituency that just might put him over the top. I sure do wish we could hear more about issues and changes rather than personal jabs.

Linda31   June 15th, 2008 11:02 am ET

Brian Knoxville, you are not a Democrat and you obviously cannot read!

McCain DID take the money from this slease bag.

As for the Democratic leaders carrying Obama over, well if you want to take them out the picture, Obama still wins with pledged delegates and that was the will of the people. Do you not realize that millions voted for him also? Where do you think the campaign money came from? DOnations for ordinary people who believe in bring the right can of change to the white house and our nation.

Every vote counted and come November, you will see the true power of a united Democratic party. Not just the party, but a nation that is hungry for change.

The DNC now more so then before has principles to admire. You do realize rules were broken, right? Yet, chaos was avoided.

I am tired of hearing about an unknown, inexperience and unqualified. If he was unknown, he would not have get any where. If he was inexperience, again no where to go. If he was unqualified, he wouldn't be allowed to run. Those who oppose Obama act like he is magic or something. The man is just a man with policy and issues that the American people agree with.

Again, he wouldn't have money if people didn't believe in him. So Brian, you may need to take your blinders off and see the reality of things and stop lying that you are a Democrat!

Yes We Will

Thank you so much for expressing my feelings 100%

I am a 65 year old white female who is just looking in from the outside.

My instinctive feeling is that Barack is the real deal! I hope and pray that Americans will take advantage of this unprecedented opportunity to elect a President who WILL BE FOR ALL AMERICANS. The rest of the world is looking on and I know that most of us really believe that this is an opportunity that the American People CANNOT let slip by!

This kind of opportunity comes by once in a million years, and no I am not talking about the colour of Barack's skin, I am talking about this relatively young man's vision. He inspires young and old, white, black and everything in between, but the way that he has inspired the young people (who REPRESENT OUR future) to believe in themselves and to take part in the political process is unprecedented.

GOD BLESS AND HELP AMERICA TO MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION!

Then there is the other side of the coin, respect our fathers, our husbands, our sons, our brothers and our nephews !! How about everyone respecting everyone!! I know that is a difficult idea, but we are a great nation and we have achieve things that other nations can only dream about !! It's not the color of some one's skin, but the content of their heart !! Don't forget America, what a great American said!! It is worth attempting to achieve this idea, it will make our nation an even a better nation !!

That McBush choses to have a good time with such jerks, is not new. He asked why Obama was in his church for 20 years when pastor's comments were taken out of context.

However, he has been in the senate for 26 years. he didn't quit because the place was corrupt. He only fired his own lobbyists because they were found out.

You don't hear Texas oil men complaining about high oil prices. Talk about rape–how about motorists. This is Bush's last gift to big oil for the continuing support of the Republican party. McCain knows he needs to keep it going.

I guess the McCain camp couldn't run a five second google search on Clayton Williams before accepting $300000 on behalf of his supporters.

I encourage the media to pressure the McCain camp to donate the $300000 to a charity that helps raped and battered women.

I promise you the Texas republicans who coordinated this fundraising event were full aware of what Clayton said while running for the govenor's office.

I know some Senetor Clinton supporters are disappointed that she will not be running and are concidering giving McCain the nod in protest. Please ask yourself what type of judgement does it take to keep the money knowing what Clayton said.

I hope every female in this country would send an email to McCain asking him to donate the $300000 to raped and battered women.

Your conscience   June 14th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

Just a friendly reminder to all the PUMA and pro-hillary people who will be backing McCain this November: If you really do decide to back McCain, which is of course your own decision, please realize that you're willing to give up your affordable health care, your sons or daughters in Iraq, the value of YOUR dollar, and YOUR America to someone who is now a flip-flopper who is Bush's third term. McCain wasn't like this before, he was great back in 2000 and 2004, but now I'm too worried about backing him.

Please think carefully about your decisions come November. I know many people are still bitter over the Democratic Party, but do realize that in the end, YOU will be paying the price if our new president is terrible. While I don't entirely trust Obama, I honestly think he will be better than McCain.

Thanks for reading.

Good for John S McCain, a true patriot and one who loves our country.

The DNC is worse than the Supremes in decision making. Let's count the votes please. Yes, let's count all the votes.

Obama lacks the wisdom, maturity, judgement and experience to be our leader. As you know his first decision after stealing the nomination from Hillary was to pick Eric Holder, who recommended a pardon for Mr. Marc Rich and Mr. Johnson, a former CEO of Fannie Mae to be key members to vet a VP candidate. `Can we afford a mistake prone individual with our America?

Th role that women play on earth is too dear to just say such of them. I would like this guy to call her mother and ask her if sher could sit back and enjoy rape because it was inevitable.

I think Mcsame shares this pig's view. I will nerver vote McSame even if it was a matter of life and death.

Ok, I don't know any intelligent people that would vote for McCain. Reguardless if you are republican or democrat. Who would vote for anyone that has flipped flopped on all of his decisions, he is out of touch with anyone except CLEARLY his own pocket book….Weather you are republican or democrat this man is to selfish to be in office…

David O   June 14th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Alright ladies, back McCain!

He really cares about your issues.

I guess we can add Rape lover to his ever expanding resume.

Connie   June 14th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

I am sure all of Hillary's will want her supporters voting for Obama as she,Bill and Chelsea will be doing. Let her take a much needed rest then I am sure she will be out letting every one know how she feels. John McBush is always the first one to jump at Barack. And Brian I guess you should be calling John McBush sleazy , not Obama. The article said he took the 300,000 and you might try to google John McCain skeletons in the closet. The way he treated his first wife fits in with his friend attitude about women. Most of Obama's war chest came from the little guy. I agree with Becky , racist, sexist, pigs. OBAMA 08

Connie from Indiana

John from Las Vegas   June 14th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

This is only the beginning. McCain has more skeletons in his closet than John Wayne Gacy.

Obama is going to wipe the floor with McCain in November. Get used to it America…we are going to make history.

Yes we WIll.

Sean Williams   June 14th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Everyone old enough to vote in the 1980s remembers the comments from 1990; how could McCain not? They were heard all over the world! It was pretty traumatizing for some women, especially because at the time rape was just being redefined as a crime of violence, not of sex. Sheesh.

Jim   June 14th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Most of you people who left comments about this piece are despicable. I'm not saying whether I'm Republican or Democrat, because that's a moot point; the fact is, the McCain campaign clearly denounced the idiocy and feeble-mindedness of some southern idiot, and all YOU people can do is criticize and ridicule McCain. Where does it end? If McCain had saved a young child's life, you'd find fault in it. Quite pathetic…

Chanda-Cincinnati Ohio   June 14th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Oh Please!!! If this guy were an Obama supporter, it would be headline news on CNN, MSNBC, and FOX. he would be raked over the coals…not called a good man for "suddenly" realizing his friend was a jerk. If McCain is so outraged by the comments that were made, why doesnt' he give back the $300k he got from this man's fundraising? McCain you and Cindy pill popper need to just go retire!

For the Black Eagle   June 14th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

Poor Mc Cain wonder how much time it'll take him to brush off the dirt off all the $300 000 bills!

McCAIN=BUSH=DISASTER CONTINUES   June 14th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

PUMA = lame, desparate attempt from the Repubs…hiding in the shadows as pissy Dems. Don't believe the hype, if a female with a brain votes McCain over Obama because she loves Hillary…she's really a Republican anyway. McCain will destroy the Supreme Court. And take down Women's rights and Civil Liberties with it. Alito and Roberts have evil, close minded G.O.P. clones waiting in the wings.

Greg FL.   June 14th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

Ask these questions.

How could he or his team not know about this man's past?

Why didn't McCain give back all the money?

At what point did he or his team call off the fundraiser and why?

In response to those who might think those comments are crude but still funny. What is funny about rape??? If you can give me a good answer that defends those types of statements I would greatly appreciate it.
By the way whether you are liberal or conservative those types of statements have no place in our society. That is not being politically correct as some will try to paint it but morally correct which is what the Republican party always tries to paint itself as. Gee, isn't this the party of God and the Ten Commandments?? Sure could have fooled me.

Frank   June 14th, 2008 6:47 pm ET

And this the man that Hillary supporters are going to vote for?

richard   June 14th, 2008 6:47 pm ET

McFlipFlop should not give the money back. He should give it away to charitable causes for rape victims. Why give it back. Those folks can always donate again in the future through a different surrogate. Give the money away and those who maxed out on their donations cannot give more to McFlipFlop later. I think it is time someone challenged the notion that McCain was a war hero. The code of conduct for military personnel at the time was not something he complied with. Others who didn't violate that code died with honor. McFlipFlop had no honor then and has no honor now.

Bone   June 14th, 2008 6:45 pm ET

What exactly does McCain's campaign actually KNOW about? Every time there's some bad remarks spoken by a supporter, his campaign claims they didn't know about it ahead of time (i.e. comments by Hagee, which I saw on The Daily Show a good week or two before McCain's camp claimed not to know about them)? I suppose he's keeping the money to pay off his credit card debt.

Seriously, if he and his campaign are always going to plead ignorance, what good will he do us as president?

A few years ago I really liked McCain and hoped he would run for president, but the more we get into this election year, the more I've come to see what a big mistake that was.

KRichard   June 14th, 2008 6:45 pm ET

How could McCain not have known about this creep's comments? They helped elect Ann Richards Governor of Texas.

randy   June 14th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

this example of what i dont like about any politician who call him salf republican. well american people we have a clear choice this november.

Diane Wilson   June 14th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

As a Texas woman, I was highly offended when Clayton Williams first made the insensative remarks equating bad hunting weather with rape. As a Texas woman from the Midland area, I was ready drag ol' Claytie (as he was called) through a catus patch - butt naked telling him to just sit back and enjoy it. Reading that McCain was going to William's home for a fund raiser gets my ire up again. You cannot tell me that McCain's staff was unaware of the taint that is all over Clayton Williams. Have they never heard of Google??

McSame means insanity -period   June 14th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

There McSame goes again. McSame means insanity. This old moron is making a mockery of himself. Pray November comes fast so this old, dark age and out of touch moron can go hide his face in the senate. Concerning detainees at Guantanamo Bay, the man showed he does not understand a very simple and basic principle of the rule of law – the right to be heard. On the Supreme Court decision, McInsane is quoted as saying, “… is a decision that will harm our ability to detain and prosecute individuals who are enemy combatants who want to destroy America.” He said the Supreme Court was wrong. I wonder how he planned to prosecute enemy combatants without sending them to court. Americans should be wary of this man.

If this man plans to veto every beer, who knows if he will not veto Supreme Court decisions. If he does that then what would be left of democracy and the rule of law in America. Bush is going down as the worst president in recent history. I predict that McCain, if elected president, will be the worst dictator in history. We have a clear choice. I trust the American people to vote wisely and save us and the world from this old dark aged backward looking moron in the 21st Century.

He canceled the event BEFORE dems whined about it. Think obama would cancel something before republicans whined about it? No.

Hey, at least McCain knows there aren't 57 states in the U.S. I'd rather have him then someone who knows nothing about our country. We are proud people here in the U.S. We're not all on welfare like Obama seems to think.

Marco De Lillis   June 14th, 2008 6:40 pm ET

Obama just captured all the female voters. Nice going McCain, you just gave the Democrats the female vote. We didn't need Hillary Clinton after all…just a stupid, ignorant move by a rich republican.

fred   June 14th, 2008 6:40 pm ET

McCain is just another Bush and Chaney. Evident by the fact that he wants to make the tax cuts permanent for the wealthiest 1% of Americans. Their m.o. is to curry favor, then when is office to release their treacherous arrow, just as Bush did. It's not surprising that he kept the money.

Richard   June 14th, 2008 6:39 pm ET

In addition and aside from these comments, being here in Texas when is the media and when are the American voters and readers, listeners going to do a little research and "look back" and examine Senator McCain and his record as amember in the "Keating Five" and the savings and loan crisis that with the failure at the time of Lincoln S&L cost taxpayers in excess of some 3 billion. When are they going to take some time to look back at deregulation policy and his role? and special interest money and the Republican party over the past twenty years since then. There are a LOT of facts that need to see some noon day press attention regarding Senator McCains LONG record OTHER than his Viet Nam service which of course we are all proud of. His record is not unblemished.

For the McBush camp to say they didn't know about the remarks is ludicrous….McCain has been a republican figure long enough to have been there when they were made….these people don't say one thing like this and get caught…..this is their mindset…..you can bet that at the actual fundraiser - and believe me there will be one -all the talk and jokes made while they drink, eat and pat each other on the back will be about this remark and many more just like it…..

Sue   June 14th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

I see…Obama's 20-year personal affiliation with a racist preacher who consistently preached hate and blame is irrelevant, but when an ignorant rich guy holding a fund-raiser made a tasteless comment 18 years ago, it's "birds of a feather flock together," huh? I also love how the CNN political ticker blog says, "Williams' comments made national news at the time and remain easy to find on the Internet. Even so, McCain's campaign said it hadn't known about the remarks," implying that b/c the remarks were available on the net, McCain should have known about remarks made EIGHTEEN (18) years ago by some failed gubernatorial candidate.

But of course, despite the fact that Obama's pastor's "sermons" had been available online long before the national media carried the story, and that he was Obama's own preacher for 20 years (who married he and Michelle, and baptized his children), we are supposed take Obama's word for it, even though Obama flip-flopped about his knowledge of Wright's remarks. Talk about media bias.

I'm becoming more convinced with every post that I read that the so called "Pumas" are just Republicans trying to stir the pot. McCain is going to lose this election very badly and we will finally have a break from 8 years of failed policy.

MCceeMould, this is the very reason why you should pay attention to your immediate surroundings before poking your beat up old nose in other people's business. If you had paid less attention to Obama's VP search committee and more to your fundraisers' events there would have been no need for the event to have been set up. You would have known of that a long time ago.

If the Democrats think McCain should give back the money, then they should rescind their endorsement of Al Franken. His skit making jokes about rape were just as offensive (and as long ago). By the way, if we continue to attribute any comment by any one supporting a candidate to that candidate, there will be no one qualified to hold any office.

B for Obama, Houston, TX   June 14th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

As soon as many of the "blind" republicans get it, maybe THE COUNTRY can move forward! These comments were offensive in 1990 and they still are. So let me get this straight (talk express), HE can apologize and it all over and done with. Maybe McCain SHARES this viewpoint to. Maybe because he was going to have a fund-raiser at his house or whatever that McCain thinks the same about rape. Does that sound logical? Now, I can hear a republican saying, "no he doesn't agree with that comment MADE 18 YEARS AGO! Now, maybe you will see what it was like with the ridiculous Jeremiah Wright comments. Maybe John McCain can resign as his FRIEND?

Brian Knoxville, TN   June 14th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

On the rules, the DNC and the RBC screwed up the process from beginning to end in a variety of ways, through actions (like deciding not to seat any delegates from MI or FL, when halving them was an infinitely better choice so that the party could hear the voices of millions of voters in those states, and allowing the Obama campaign to resist counting all the votes or allowing revotes) and inactions (like doing nothing to investigate serious charges of fraud at caucuses and saying nothing as the media bashed one candidate way beyond anything reasonable and let another candidate slide on matters that showed his serious lack of subtances on issues).

On my principles and why I will be voting for McCain, the principles of our party (like full democratic participation and fair reflection) are necessary bases that guide our processes for speaking to and, indeed, chosing our leaders. Those principles were stepped on, spat at, and tossed out with the trash (particularly the bizarre choices for the unfair allocation of delegates from MI ).

Obama is a weak candidate with a weak base of support. He will abuse his power over the DNC and step all over our principles for not other end than to keep his power. That's what weak rulers do when they rise to their positions through illegitimate means.

S. Preval Lutz, FL   June 14th, 2008 6:26 pm ET

OMG! Another prime example of shady politics from McShady. "I don't want anything to do with you but I'll take your campaign money." I wouldn't be surprised if McCain is STILL taking money from Rev. Hagee to fund his campaign. McCain is in it for all the wrong reasons. He can't fix our economy. He still has ties to President Bush by voting 95% his way in the senate. He doesn't care about women's rights by taking the money from this ((expletive)) idiot Clayton Williams.

Apparently McCain is the only person in America who hasn't heard of Google or YouTube where you can research the people who you're affiliated with during this run. WOW! Out of touch is an understatement for this man. McCain get a clue. You're running for the most prestigious office in the land, stop taking money from low lives who just don't get it.

Go Obama 08/12

Mcbush, you must return the "rape" money, for you can't have it both ways. I think if this was one of the Obama affiliation, all the media begin with foxnews will have been all over it.

Jeff: I agree that sometimes people take the humor out of jokes by making them political, but YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING on this one.

I could go on for days about why this isn't funny, but let's just say that the basic attitude behind it is that rape isn't that big of a deal.

Women who have been raped are often haunted by it for the rest of their lives. It is the most humiliating, degrading, awful thing one human being can do to another.

From my point of view, anyone who would make this kind of 'joke' is merely exposing an inner belief that sex with whomever they choose is a man's birthright. That is a sickening thought. Williams is scum.

T Williams & Obamaican,

The article says that "the contributions came from other individuals supporting McCain and not from Williams." McCain separated himself from Williams on principle and did not take any of Williams's money.

Don't choose facts selectively or distort them. The article was clear on the source of the money, though I admit that with CNN it's sometimes harder to see facts because they give a few paragraphs of their take on it and provide the dirt, so to speak, before they provide the quotations of what the people actually said about the parts of the stories that really matter…

Brian Knoxville, TN   June 14th, 2008 6:06 pm ET

Politicians who have principles and who will not just take money from such sleazy people still exist?

Judging from the undemocratic Democratic Party's so-called leaders' actions–in selecting a candidate, and in abusing the process to favor that candidate, and even after all that in having to carry that candidate over the finish line because he wasn't able to get there himself, regardless of all his campaign's money–I didn't think such principled politicians existed any more…

The DNC decided that they would rather dip into Obama's pot of gold and take as much of the money as possible, regardless of whether or not the guy can win the general election or should hold an office for which he has no qualifications, and regardless of the will of millions of voters who were told they didn't count, than uphold our principles, like those of full democratic participation and fair reflection.

There was a time when the DNC upheld our principles, even if it meant losing elections. Now the party's so-called leaders just toss them out and select an unknown, inexperienced and unqualified candidate in order to carry off a bit of the money-machine's treasure.

Ironically, this year they could have upheld our principles AND supported the stronger general election candidate and better leader.

Brian & Josh, do honestly think Hillary Clinton would approve of McCain taking the money under the circumstances? No. Not that it really matters to you, because you sound like McCain Republicans anyway .

julie mn   June 14th, 2008 6:06 pm ET

Senator McCain has no problem with cancelling , or with ever making an apology. obama has never apolizied to anybody for anything, he just blames it on someone else, or lies, like the snub he gave hillary or the just scratched my face, finger !!! he only regrets the media brought it up.

very good articles at realclearpolitics, re the vile posts of obama supporters, and cnn endorses obama, shame on you all!!!!

What many people do not realize is that this remark, along with others, by Clayton Williams is responsible for George W Bush being elected president. Had Clayton Williams not stuck is foot in his mouth, he well could have won the TX governor's race in 1990 over Ann Richards. He then would have run for reelection in 1994 on the Republican ticket, preventing George W. Bush from running and being elected governor in 1994. Without the TX governorship to his record, George W Bush would just be a son of a former president and an unsuccessful business man, with nothing in his resume to warrant him running, much less getting, the presidential nomination of the Republican party.

But Obama goes to church for 20 years and was "shocked" that the priest was saying all that stuff.

andrea, Illinois   June 14th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

We really need Obama to be our next president. He will improve our education system and then maybe people will actually understand what they read.
It CLEARLY says that McCain DID NOT GIVE THE MONEY BACK. So he basicly distanced himself from Williams after having taken the money. So much about McCain's moral standards……He's a joke!

Charlotte   June 14th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

Nick, I hope you apply the same logic to Obama? Wright, Pfleger, etc.

I am a gun-toting proud TENNESSEAN who will NEVER support ANYONE who thinks lightly of "rape" jokes. Cling to my guns, yeah, at least I can protect my property and myself and fend myself from some jerk wanting to hog-tie me and drag me through the dirt for his perverted pleasure..well, I would have a BIG surprise awaiting someone like that.

We "C'AIN'T" let someone into office that negates women's rights while courting them, telling them LIES.

Obama would have given the money back. At least he has some ETHICS. Ask Cindy for a loan if you need $300k that badly.;

Why do my comments not get posted? There is a such thing as freedom of speech and besides that as I see it I have told the truth as I see it and did not say anything that is not in accordance with CNN's Comment Policy.
We won't support Obama . My wife and I have voted Democratic and contributed to the DNC since 1972. We just got a call from the DNC last night asking for our donation. We were told that we are not true Democratics for not supporting the candidate that Dean, Pelosi, Kennedy, the media, and the DNC rammed down our throats. If an inexperienced empty suit is the best the Democratic Party has to offer, then I guess we are not true Democratics. We will be voting for McCain in November and our contribution to the RNC has already been made. This is no longer the Democratic Party that we have supported so long. The Democratic Party left us, we didn't leave it. And that sickens me.

If it was Obama instead of Mccain this would be getting a lot more space in the news!
The more I learn about McCain the less I like him!

OBAMA 08

Jeff   June 14th, 2008 6:02 pm ET

Please, can we move past this crap and get to the substitutive issues that Obama will wipe McCain's butt with?
Obama '08, enough of the silliness.

James   June 14th, 2008 5:59 pm ET

The Clayton Williams comment was national news, a very famous incident. Williams was ahead in the polls by huge margins before the "joke". Even if McCain was not aware of the comments, a quick Google search would have educated him. McCain was probably aware and just let it go until someone finally called him on it.

Larry in TX   June 14th, 2008 5:59 pm ET

McCain has personally apologized to DNC spokeswoman Karen Finney. He told her, "I'm sorry about this, sweetie."

Ratgurl   June 14th, 2008 5:58 pm ET

Yep, another QUALITY Republican, running for President. Is it me, or do these guys always seem to come from Texas (or the general vicinity)?

Steve   June 14th, 2008 5:57 pm ET

All you Hillary supporters who are threatening to vote for McCain should Google "McCain Chelsea joke". Then see if you still want to vote for him.
