Watch Sen. Obama fill sandbags Saturday in Illinois.

QUINCY, Ill. (AP) — Barack Obama has stopped by the Mississippi River city of Quincy in his home state of Illinois where he used a shovel to fill sandbags as a precaution against the rising river.

The Democratic presidential nominee-apparent says his thoughts are with the people of Iowa, where flooding has chased thousands from their homes.

Obama said since he's been in public office he has not seen "this kind of devastation."

Obama pledged to push the federal and state governments to provide aid to the stricken areas.

Yes He Can……Yes We Can!! Finally a role model to help guide those who have lost their way. Meaning, showing respect for those in need, being sensitive to others in mind and deed. God knows this country's negative "wash your mouth out" statements made by some needs someone to step up and show them the way. Alas, if only those hateful people would only get the message.

God Bless you Barack for being a fine Dad and a fine Man:)

Happy Father's Day

How are YOU helping out??? Tell me.

My father always told me when I was growing up that "if you see a man doing a job that he needs help doing, and you're just sitting there, then what kind of man are you?"

This is no photo op. This is leadership by example.

Hillary folks, please come home.

Janet, Arizona   June 15th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

Not only was Senator Obama out sandbagging himself, his campaign website was organizing help from the Obama supporters. And letting people know where they could go if they needed help. Contrast this to George Bush and John McCain having birthday cake while people were dying in New Orleans. Which kind of president would you rather have?

Before commenting about sexism in Dems, can anyone name a prominent woman leader in Republican party? We have Pelosi and Hillary, they have none. At least Hillary went so far. Republicans won't let a woman stand so far.

You'll find a lot of bloggers commenting on Barack's act as a photo op, and if it was, at LEAST it was a photo op that showed concern.

During Katrina, where was Mc Cain? Oh, right… he was photo op-ing with Bush and a birthday cake at the airport. (Puke!)

To answer the Obama haters that cannot admit that he is a great leader , politican and an excellent role model. Those of you that are saying that this is just a publicity stunt, a photo op. Well, answer this, What did Bush do during Katrina. Don't you wish he picked up a shovel or did anything to help Katrina victims instead of watch them in his safe plane. I admire Sen. Obama for modeling what others can and should do - other then criticize.

Love you future President!!

Jacquie H   June 15th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

I can tell you that Clinton, Bush, and Bush 2 NEVER rolled up their sleeves to shove anything but BS and I work in disaster relief. The only thing Bush did was hand out some ice to some people during the campaign with his brother in Florida during the 4 storms in 2004. I can guarantee you that Bushie Boy didn't haul his rear to New Orleans, don some gloves and a respirator and clean some some mold from some poor victims home, help clean some mud out or tear out dry wall and rotting molding carpet. Before you all moan about the photo op, where are YOU? Sitting home in your comfy dry chairs watching it all on CNN. The flooding is maybe not as dramatic as Katrina damage but it hits a huge area of the country and where are all you patriots? Hmmm at least Obama is making some sort of effort rather than popping his gums about what government will do with his limited time he made an effort. I don't see the same effort from Bush, he's too tired from his trip to Europe when the WHOLE middle of this country is in dire straights. What is wrong with this picture?????

Give up obama we see right through you. You can't win in november by filling sand bags. You have surrounded your self with loooosers like kerry , dastchel, kennedy edwards and the list goes on. Only person that can save DNC is Hillary.

Steve   June 15th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Eric   June 15th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

It is about time that a young and youthful presidential candidate get out there and help out. Let us see if McCain can do it. Wow, Obama saved 50,000 dollars on a Rezko deal. A whole 50,000 dollars! Let's talk about McCain, and Bush support of Haliburton. The Iraq war is costing us almost trillions a year. Just so Bush, and McCain can play Civilization 2000-2008 on a large scale. The difference between the deal that Rezko gave Obama and the millions of bank lenders, govermental agencies who screwed so many African American under bush's watch who had better or equal credit with White Americans and Katrina, is that the Bush and McCain supports these bank lenders through bad economic, and political policies. I am glad that Obama got a 50,000 dollar discount. It is funny how the Republicans and their constituencies complain about high taxes, and governmental interference when it comes to them. No, Senator, or Candidate can take the high road any issue. Just like McCain is taking his wife's business plane to move him from political event to event, and using it as business write-off. It is legal. But is it matter of ethics when your rival can't do it? If you want to talk about ethics or fairness, the amending of the Bankruptcy bill of 2005 is an atrocity. I will see youbama in the white house.

John G said:

"Obama said since he's been in public office he has not seen 'this kind of devastation.'

CNN takes Obama's quote out of context. He was referring to devastation caused by Midwest flooding, as other accounts I've read make clear.

2NurseLady:

Give it a rest. Obama was not involved in any wrong doing with Rezko and gave all the money Rezko gave to his campaign to charity. So stop trying to slander Obama by misleading people about Rezko. And if you're a Clinton or McCain supporter, there are proven frauds on their resumes that no one wants to bring up. I think it's ridiculous that Obama has to answer for so many things that he has no control over, but no one wants to get to the bottom or dig up dirt on McCain, and they didn't on Hillary, either.

Give it a rest.

On a lighter note, I think it's great that he's helping out in a real way. Good for you, Obama, I can't wait for you to be President!

This is not the first time that Obama has put his money where his mouth is when it comes to caring and learning about his fellow citizens. During the primary, he spent a whole day with a caregiver for an eldery, disabled man and just recently he spent the day with a nurse in Colorado. This is the type of leadership we need, not another PR junket to Iraq, risking the safety of our troops and incurring needless cost. OBAMA '08!

This is to 2NurseLady - if you can't take the time to find out the facts about any candidate, of any party, and instead prefer to spread inaccuracies spread by those with a vested interest in pushing another candidate, you should sit out of the election process. It's this type of vicious falsehoods that infects the political process and ensures that absolutely nothing gets done in D.C. Having been stuck living in Chicago for nearly 20 years, I've had a ringside seat to all of this, and if nothing else, you and people spouting off about things you know nothing about are providing the Windy City with plenty of amusement. A $1.65 million mortgage in that neighborhood is pretty average, and the Obama's had to raise their bid from an initial $1.3 million to get the house. The price paid for the strip of vacant land was exactly 1/6 of the original purchase price Rezko paid. There are endless other inaccuracies in your comments, i.e. "slumlord". You're only making yourself look foolish by carrying on this way.

What a show! Good grief! Barack Obama is doing everything possible to get votes when all he needs to do is to ensure that Hillary Clinton is on the Democratic ticket to ensure his own win.

While Barack Obama is filling sand bags, I think he is also building a loss for himself and for our Party, the Democratic Party. Because of circumstances such as those we face right now, the Democratic Party has always hedged its bets to the DETRIMENT of the Democratic Party and of The People and we have LOST THE WHITE HOUSE 70% of the time over the past 40 years. That is because our Party fails to do what is needed to win. Right now, Hillary Clinton needs to be on the Democratic ticket. The VOTERS have said this. Whose voice are they listening to at the DNC and whose voice is Barack Obama listening to? Certainly not that of the voters.

The DNC and Barack Obama are paving the way for yet another loss for the Democrats in November when they could ensure the Party's certain victory by ensuring that Hillary Clinton is on the ticket.

dumb   June 15th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

What exactly do we want them to do?

"New polls show Mr. Obama opening up a huge lead among female voters — beating Mr. McCain by 13 percentage points in the Gallup and Rasmussen polls and by 19 points in the latest Wall Street Journal-NBC News survey.

How huge is a 13- to 19-percentage-point lead? John Kerry won women by only 3 points, Al Gore by 11." - By FRANK RICH

Some people just don't get it. This man is sincere. He is our savior. People can write in as much as they want that they are not voting for him. It doesn't matter. He already is winning without you!!!

And he is doing this as a PRE-EMPTIVE measure to prevent the levee break. One president who would know which task requires us to be pre-emptive.

For all the naysayers and doubters, please do whatever you can to help the flood victims. This is not the time for pointing fingers at others and dividing people. Take pride in being an American!

2Nurselady…
You need to do some research and get your facts straight before you start spouting off. Look up Rezco and Obama on the internet and start reading. You must be one of those that hear bits of this and that from others and think you know everything without really checking into the truth. It's a shame that so many people do that.

unions are not stupid   June 15th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

It is funny to me the hate some people have in there heart for this man. They know nothing about him are unwilling to educate themselves and don't care what happens to the country. Just hate filled bitter people! That I guess is exactly what republicans what a hate filled bitter people that way it is much more easy for them to trick everyone and keep these people under there control.

Ann   June 15th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

Take it easy Mr. Obama.. keep the shovel closer to your body Senator otherwise you'll hurt your back.. if you really want to fill a whole sandbag not just pose for the camera.

BTW, the sand cannot be as dirty as Obama's politics.

It's a photo op - get real. I doubt that he did it for any longer than it took to take his picture. People sure believe he is so great. He is no different than other politicians who want to get elected. It's truly amazing that people think he is really helping.

Tim, Powder Spring, GA   June 15th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

Talk is cheap!!! And faith without works is dead!!! Him helping fill bags goes alot further than saying "you're in our prayers and jumping in a plane and taking off". Finally a President who gets it!!

Andrew   June 15th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

Obama should be doing his job in the Senate to help Illinois and especially Iowa. Instead of doing photo-ops on the campaign trail.

But, campaigning to be President is really all he has done since he has been a Senator anyway.

StacyGA   June 15th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

First of CNN , post my comment (I have been trying for months!!!!

Why the nastiness coming from some people. He was a community organizer, SO he is used to helping communities that are in the direst of condition. He was not afraid to go in the "hoods" of Chi-town and work with the people to help better their lot in life. let me tell you some of those communities are riddled with despair, helplessness, and hopelessness. He made a difference in their lives (I have family that live in a communities that he served, so I know first hand that he is a man who does get things done, and sincerely wants to help people. I am NOT SURPRISED, that he would help in this tragedy. Most men of his stature would not even care. Some of you may want to think about that.
Go Obama 08,12

lol they cant even bend over, no wonder they arent there…cute peice on McCain too, makes me lose alot of respect for the guy concidering my dads a vet and from all ive learned this guys got quite a distorted view of things. Probably never dug a hole in his life either. Republicans are looking for anything to hate on, maybe because they have been proved wrong about EVERYTHING, meatheads, keep up the hate, maybe we should honestly encourage them to open a book, like one said to me " Obama is no good in my book" my reply….well moron "maybe you should open a book?" hey thats an idea.

Mary   June 15th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Wonder how many other sandbaggers put on new blue jeans and a white dress shirt to fill sand bags? Bet he did not even get any dirt or sand on him but managed to have more photos than filled sandbags. This is political pandering, again.

Seventy year olds did more to save their town.

Susan   June 15th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

And if President Obama had stayed there longer, he would have been criticized anyway…. probably for not helping people at the next flood scene or tornado disaster.

I say respectfully that Senator McCain is proably not able to shovel sand… and I would not expect him to be doing that. They also serve who only stand and wait.

But after months of campaigning, and no doubt wishing for time with the family, President Obama got up off the couch and went out and did some work. There are times when I wish my kids would do that.

Loretta from California   June 15th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

I don't believe the negative comments on this blog. They complained when he didn't go, even though their state leaders asked him not to, and now they complain because he went to help out. Hmmmmmm-need I ask why.

TheTruthHurts   June 15th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

Even if it were a political stunt; at least he did it. I don't see the rest of them. This man has rolled up his sleeves to help throughout his adulthood. He's also calling on US to do the same. That's a big difference. Republicans (in general) don't want the general public involved. They might see how they are being ROBBED BLIND by the system.

I'm sure Barack will lose some friends in the Democratic Party because they are doing some robbing themselves. They don't want the veil of secrecy removed either. We will need to support Barack after the election if he has any chance of changing the way government operates. January 2009 is the beginning, not the end.

Now how about you repub shills going to Iraq and relieving all those tired young women fighting your wars for you? Ain't THAT a great idea? Go…go now…GB has a uniform all ready for you, and you will get a much better deal than if you wait for the draft McCain has in his back pocket.

But he did work on Bush's reelection campaign, so I guess that qualified him. Oh, am I being cynical??? Sorry.

Yes we can. This is the "Can-do" attitude that America needs. I know some of you question his motives, but consider the following. Did any other politician show up? Whether or not he stayed for the photo-op or the whole day, will it inspire others to take action?

So many of us are so focused on the candidates that we forget that this democracy of ours is about "We the People". That's what leaders do. They inspire others to take action. He's inspiring millions. And not just within our borders.

You people really have nothing else to do but post negative comments. Where are your photo ops of you helping in any of these cities? How many Katrina victims did you help? Funny I can work all day in my yard and not get dirty at all. How exactly do you hold a shovel, I have never ready those instructions myself, and can you post them? Don’t hate, appreciate!! Those of you who want to vote for McCain because Hillary did not win, because Obama is black, because he is too young, and any other pathetic reason you come up with, must have deep pockets to continue to pay for rising gas and food cost, and I also hope you have an unlimited supply of yellow ribbon for the soldiers that will continue to loose in this senseless war that he will keep going. By the way Bush should have plenty of experience and look where we are now!!! Follow the lead of those with a college education and those with just plain common sense and base your vote on what it will take to Change the way we are all living today.

Barack was a US Senator when Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005. Summary of devastation: 1836 dead, countless lives wrecked, 81.2 billion in damage. I'm sure he's seen that, so his remark was a little too casual here.

But it's good to see that he has the foresight to get help the people prepare, and I'm sure that when he's president he won't be as blind to natural disasters as George Bush.

Obama canceled the campaigning in Iowa last week. Instead of staying home, he could have helped there. He has not seen the disaster area yet! If McCain gets down and dirty, I don't see people will appreciate that at all. In fact, McCain is 71, Obama is 46, you expect McCain to hold a shovel? If he lost the primary, I don't think Obama would be helping.

Desmond Sequeira   June 15th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

I love it. The only "down and dirty" that OBAMA is likely to engage in is when he take shovel to earth. This is so unlike those republicans whose "down and dirty" is downright nasty, cheap and preying on the unintelligent, purely emotional among their constituents when they engage in gross smears against Obama's wife. Obviously they cannot find dirt on the candidate so they clutch at straws by attacking his spouse.
Though Mccain has praised Michelle, I am not seeing him denouncing this nasty republican smear campaign.

The Weatherman   June 15th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Satuday, I saw a "code pink" or whatever group trying to park their Ford F-350 pick-up (gas hog) with a sign insulting McCain, Bush and our troops. This occured in front of a Stripper Club in south Arlington VA within a 2 minute drive from the Pentagon. I saw some really incredible dichotomies (tough word for Obama's crowd). I did my patriotic duty for the environment (according to McCain) and called the Arlington County Police Department to let them know the "code pink" protesters were creating a public safety problem with their antics within a stone's throw from Arlington National Semitary and those heroes buried within the walls.

Now we have a photo of Obama digging dirt. The photo is another dichotomy. He is for "change" but, he will stick his finger in the dike for a photo opportunity just like all the rest……Will he ever answer a qustion that is not on a telepromper????????
