Gore has not ruled out a future presidential run.

(CNN) — After remaining neutral throughout the Democratic primary season, former Vice President Al Gore is officially backing Barack Obama's presidential run, and will appear with him at a Michigan campaign event Monday night.

"A few hours from now I will step on stage in Detroit, Michigan to announce my support for Senator Barack Obama," said the 2000 Democratic presidential nominee in a fundraising e-mail sent to supporters Monday. "From now through Election Day, I intend to do whatever I can to make sure he is elected President of the United States."

Former presidential candidate John Edwards also announced his decision to endorse Obama at a rally in the crucial fall swing state.

Too little…too late - and should have endorsed Hillary in the first place!

NEVEROBAMA   June 16th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

@ HEY HILLARY CLINTON SUPPORTERS

Give it a rest in 4 years no one will care that Obama lost the election in 08′. People will hate the fact that McCain/Replicans are in office they will greet Hillary with open arms.

The fact is we do not like Obama now or ever. I especially do not like is wife.

Al Gore your endorsement is too late! Who care what you think anyway, coward! Why did you not endorse anyone before. Did you forget 2 weeks after Bill Clinton had his heart surgery he went out to stump for you in 2000? How easily people forget what the Clintons did.

Ilona   June 16th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

A comment to Hillary supporters who are calling Al Gore a loser. Have you forgotten that Al Gore won the popular vote in 2000 and that that election was stolen due to Florida "recount"? You all were screaming that Hillary won the popular vote, so you should be calling her loser as well:)
I just wish Al that you have supported Obama earlier. But better later that never.
Let's unite democrats and win in November!

Edwin K C   June 16th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Al Gore

From Africa, we like you with all our hearts

Over Eighty percent still belive that Victory was robbed from you but look at what happened. Your choose to move on and you are now respected all over the world.

Please agree to serve in President Obama's leadership and blessings will be upon you abundantly.

Do we need our Vote   June 16th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Gore,

The only way Obama can get our Vote is either You or Hillary on Ticket.

Obama/Hillary
or
Obama/Gore

Otherwise go McCain!

Eli   June 16th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

He needs to go worry about the planet, he is way too late and endorsing the wrong person. When is Gore going to learn he turned his back on the CLINTONS in the 2000 election and that is why he got beat. Hillary please do not take the VP even if he offers because that toliet is about to flush and we all know what happens after that.

le   June 16th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Duh…you expect him to endorse McCain?

GO HILLARY 2012…MCCAIN 2008

Stonewall, Florida   June 16th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Al, your endorsement, credibility, popularity and immense appeal definitely add some measure of political muscle to Obama's candidacy. I must say though, that I always pegged you for a closet Barack supporter, but your political acumen disciplined you from an earlier endorsement. I admire your style.

John Carter   June 16th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Can someone tell me WHY this is news? How about trolling out all the other former Democratic politicians that are endorsing Obama…wow, that would be surprising! And big news! The same for Republicans.

WHEN CAN WE STOP CALLING EACH OTHER NAMES, START RESPECTING EACH OTHER (INCLUDING _BOTH_ CANDIDATES) AND START TALKING ABOUT THE REAL ISSUES?!?!?!?!

I don't care that Obama doesn't/didn't wear a lapel pin, and I don't care that McCain most likely veto beer. It doesn't matter to me that Obama picked up a shovel, and it doesn't bother me that McCain is keeping some money from some screwball.

What bothers me is that every minute/hour/day that we spend discussing these nonsense/trite issues is time spent AWAY from the substantive issues that ARE important, and that SHOULD be the basis for the voting decision made by each and every one of us.

ISSUES! LET'S TALK ABOUT THEM SOONER RATHER THAN LATER.

Tom   June 16th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Wow. It takes such great courage to endorse someone who has already won. Way to go, Al Bore.

EDW   June 16th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Obama Nation, I like that…

Now since Obama donated the money raised by Rezko then McCain should donate the money raised by that Texan oilman. Fair is fair…

independent now   June 16th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Hello???? He is the dem nominee there isnt anyone else, This isnt news people!Who did you think he would endorse? The republican? come on wake up. This does nothing for Obama any Politician who dosent endorse him will get a huge lashing from The DNC Nancy Pelosi and Howard Dean.

Scott (GA)   June 16th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Before you read this, this might offend some people. Take that into account before reading it.

For anyone out there who doesn't consider age when voting for a president, I wish to make a point. "Age-ism" as its being called, is taking political correctness one step to far. Should age be a factor? To me, without a doubt. First, look at a picture of ANY former President at the beginning of his first term, and then look at a picture of when they leave office. Second, the life expectancy of ANY president is almost always shorter than that of the general population. We have had a good run with Regan living into his 90's, as well as Bush 1, Carter, Ford and Nixon living long lives. Including those names, only 1/3 live full healthy lives to life expectancy. 4 years ago, when Ford Carter Bush Clinton Regan and Bush 2 were alive, we had more living "Presidential Terms" than anytime in history (8 - 4 year terms). Truthfully this is by far the exception rather than the rule (the average being somewhere between 2 and 3). Yes, you could talk about medical achievements over the last 50 years, and pension reform took place for the president and their families around the turn of the 20th century, but I still go back to how the Presidency ages you: Go back 8 years and take a look at Bush 2 and you will hardly recognise the brown hair that he lost. Clinton was a ladies man when he took office, by the end he could hardly get a WH intern. Now I might be going a little overboard, but then again, if anyone wants further proof that age MIGHT actually matter, go back and study the election of William Henry Harrison. At the time he was the oldest man to take office. When he was running, many attacked his age, and yet he was still elected. He died a month after taking office and the country was left in political turmoil. At the very least, look long and hard at the VP, because that might be who you are really voting for. Anyone want to describe McSame as young and vigorous? I'm not saying don't vote for McCain because of his age, I'm saying that it is wholesale naivete to not consider age when voting for President.

To the mentally sick or just plain ignorent Bush supporters, your man child did NOT win the election in 2000. He was appointed by the supreme court and after the votes were counted Bush lost Florida. I know facts and figures scare you since they are what they are and you cannot manipulate them but Bush lost both the popular vote and the electoral vote once the votes the Supreme Court stopped them from counting were counted. What we have is a king not a president and it will forever tarnish this formerly great Country. Bush is a war criminal that deserves to hang till death with the rest of his cast of characters right on the mall in DC, Condi, Rumsfeld, Cheney, Powell, Ashcroft all swinging in the breeze of the Patomic. I only hope that there is enough time left to save this Country from the tragic idiocy that King George the Foolish has dragged us into. Anyone and everyone who supports this piece of crap should be deeply and forever ashamed. And to pretend to be Christians on top of it? You are sick and depraved and will never see Heaven except possibly in your rear view mirror on your trip straight to Hell! Call yourself whatever you want but your actions say an entiely different thing then anything remotely Christian!

Besides… being a VP still lets you excercise tons of power. Thanks to Cheney, the VP position is now the 4th branch of the US Government.

How hurting is the Obama camp, in a year that for all political purposes is suppose to go to the Dems., that every few days they have to make news with an endorsement. And each time they try to up the ante, the polls remain basically the same…….it's over Dean & Co. And if the Dems. had any sense of dignity they would begin to clean house at the TOP.

Get the message Mr. Dean, country before party. You've made a tyrannical mockery of the primary process…we all know you shoved Obama across the finish line….listen to the popular vote: Hillary won.

After all this, my respect to Gore and gratitude for his work on behalf of our environment. We know he was strong armed to make this move.

So you hillary supporters are betting on a fail adminstration just to get her elected in 2012. So you would vote for a person who doesn't represent your values, put the country through 4 more fail yrs. Just to get hillary elected because you are sore losers. WOW great going!

"the visit was postponed because McCain “had a personal conflict” and 400-500 people had already bought tickets — far too many for Williams, an oilman, and his wife Modesta to accommodate in their home."
so do to the fact that so many people were attending they have to find a bigger venue for the event not because of a comment (i hope mccains spokeperson learns a lesson from this i.e. get fired)

JM   June 16th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Well, he would be doing this regardless of the candidate considering how far along it is, so I do not see this as a personal endorsement but a purely political one. He waited until Obama was the only one left, so that says something. He's just a loyal Democrat going through the motions. Although, I find it a bit disappointing considering what he wrote in his book and has said about politics being toxic. Obama also just spoke for AIPAC… I suppose Al Gore supports that too? As a supporter of his I still retain my right to think for myself and decide what I will do in November based on what happens between now and then. And hopefully he has told Obama that his climate change plan is abyssmal and he has to stop kissing up to the coal industry in order for his rhetoric on the environment to look credible.

They are women that have always voted GOP but were willing to vote for a woman. Now that she is out they are trying to convince Democratic women to vote for McNut.

We will not be fooled. Real women care about issues that affect us. The same issues that McNut has voted against his entire career. He just voted against equal pay for women let alone his wanting Roe Vs Wade to be overturned. Watch the debates to come hopefully he will have to answer to all his anti-woman voting over the years.

I have a humble suggestion: please consider choosing Al Gore as your VP. A more radical move would be giving your delegates to him and making him the nominee and you being the VP. After all he rightfully won in 2000 and had the election stolen from him by the imposter and his "let them eat short term dividends" warmongers. Either way your combination would be awesome!

One more failed politician who has simply given up on America. Faced with the most unqualified and divisive nominee the DNC has ever produced, too many weak and feeble minded politicians, such as Mr. Gore, have taken the low road. Instead of using their clout, position and access to information to help voters make an informed choice, many have chosen to push Mr. Obama even though he is obviously a poor choice with a cloud of unanswered questions swirling about him.

Sadly, it is clear that the DNC no longer wants what is best for America. Patriotism, qualifications and aptitude no longer are weighed when choosing a nominee to fill the most important position in the world.

Who cares who they endorse, they couldn't get the job done!!!!

Bold move, Mr. Vice President.

Steven Dison   June 16th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

Let me just say this to all the women( Hillary supporters, too) who are contemplating supporting McCain. For one, he supports overturning Roe v. Wade that made abortion legal. How would he do this?

By appointing the next judges. They'll be conservative, of course. Some of the supreme court judges are very old, and will retire (or god forbid, die.) So, please, if you're pro-choice, DO NOT VOTE FOR McCAIN!

Timber   June 16th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

Gore should not smear his good name by endorsing Obama.

Walter   June 16th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

All of those Obama haters should be ashamed of themselves. Do you idiots understand that our government has been screwing us over and over and over and over and over and over and over again?

Do you get the point or are you all just palin old dumb? Also, some of you are just plain and simple biggots and racist!

Barack Obama is trying to bring change to a government that has done nothing but get rich off the backs of hardworking americans. Ask yourselve just one question, what has the fat cats done for you?

Get real and get behind this man. He can't be any worst then what we have put up with for so manty years. I'm tired of housing, feeding, and insuring the Washington fat cats while I struggle to house, fee and insure my own family!

NH for OBAMA!!!!!

Dems Win   June 16th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

Shame on all of you bitter Clintonistas calling Al Gore a "loser."

Al Gore won more votes for President did in 2000 than Bill Clinton did in 1992 or 1996. Clinton only won a plurality of the vote with Ross Perot taking big chunks of the vote.

I'm not sure if you Clintonistas know how to count. I know many of you believe that having a college degree is elitist.

Brandon   June 16th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

lol…McCain.

Do people actually think he is going to win? Holy hell…even leaders of the GOP pack are predicting his chances are slim.

The ONLY way McCain is going to win is if our Government stages another "terrorist" attack on our soil or drums up some impeding doom BS so that ole' grizzly McCain can step in and win on his POW status.

Other than that….Obama is a sure win in November. Anyone willing to hedge bets on that can respond here and I'll be happy to take you up on it

Mariela   June 16th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

who cares if he endorsed him. Obama is going to loose the general elections we still have a long way to go and there is going to be more things coming out from Hussein. One loose to another looser. I am shame of Gore to endorse Hussein that does not have any experience and his radicals friends, and his rethoric. Obama won't be a president I think the US is more intelligent and know who can lead this country.

Hillary 2012/ Mccain will win the presideny 2008

My vote would have been democract but not this time I am voting for Mccain since Hillary did not win the nominacion because all of the leftis the control the democraty party that gave to Hussein. You will regret DNC

Hey Brian in Knoxville, and other Puma advocates,
the people voted. Not the DNC.
I know you wanted Clinton, I wanted Richardson.
My candidate didn't get it. Your candidate didn't get it.
So, since your kid isn't the heard cheerleader, or star quarterback, you want to go to the other side and root for the opponent?
All while your kid is still on the team?
Again, Clinton didn't win, but has asked her supporters to stay with HER team.
I don't get it but maybe someone else will explain it.

AJ   June 16th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

So Gore has decided to swallow the kool aide too? What a pity. He was the one democratic leader that I still had some respect for. I have been a democrat all of my life and I have never been so ashamed of the democratic leadership. I hope Gore is doing this just to try and bring unity to our party and not because he really believes that Obama is the saviour that the rest of the rabid Obama supporters believe him to be. After 30 years in the Democratic party I wont be supporting Obama in the fall. He is Ego in a suit. Obama will do what is best for himself, not what is best for the nation.

Robert   June 16th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

I'm an Obama supporter but to this one I say, "who cares?". Is there anyone who was biting his or her nails hoping Al Gore would not endorse McCain instead? Al Gore had a chance to speak in a way that meant something but waited 'till now. He may be a hero to the left but he's a joke to the right and to the center and the center is where this election will be won.

I had no idea that people were so dumb.

I'm not referring to Gore, but to the people posting on this page.

Those of you who once supported Hillary but are now virulently supporting McCain, I have a hard time believing that you honestly see McCain's policies as a rational place-holder for Clinton's. Obama won, fair and square. Please, just get over it.

Youre not fooling anyone:

"Well, Hillary didn't win, so instead of voting for Obama, the candidate whose views are closest to Hillary's, I'll vote for McCain 'cause I'm pissed off."

I had no idea that values mean so little to some people…

Wonderful, can wait to see his endorsement on CNN.

Can someone please tell David Plouffe to keep his mouth shut. Senator Obama should campaign in both Michigan and Florida.

Democrats Unite.

Loretta, Obama is campaigning in both states. Plouffe was stating that these two states should not be the only ones that count. It is important to stray away from the big state stratigies and compete in all 50 states which democrats in the past have not done. Plouffe made that clear in the article. I am happy gore is endorsing. yes we can.

This is a major endorsement, Obama has his green side (no pun intended) covered. it is a big deal for him to come out before the convention to show his support. Meaning that he likes obama's approach to Finding alternative energy sources and reducing emission of global warming gases. Don't forget about green jobs.

Thanks Al , we need all hands on deck to get this going. We need an early knock out to beat mccain in the fall.

BTW, has anyone heard from HRC lately? Didn't she promise to stump for Obama? Hopefully she intends to keep her promise. Maybe she's working a second job trying to pay off her campaign debt.

MD   June 16th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

This is an important step. I think Obama could use all the support he can get to negate the damage that Hillary Clinton caused during the primary.

I am so glad that she has not been heard of for over a week now.

The best way for the Democratic Party to heal is for Hillary to stay as far away from Obama as possible.

Tonya, Richmond, VA   June 16th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

No one seems to have a legitimate reason as to why Obama will not make a great president. Wait, there is the same "he's inexperienced" excuse. We've heard it all before, let's come up with more reasons please.

Hillary would NEVER win even if she ran in 2012 because there will be 18 million Obama supporters who WILL NEVER vote for Clinton if that happened.

So you can play it your way and we Obama supporters can play it our way, you want Hillary in 2012 or 2016? Vote Obama so the 18 million Obama supporters repay the favor

OBAMA won iowa without any endorsements just by talking to people and delievering his messag right –so he does not need anybody .

Agnes   June 16th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

DNC, when the voice of the people is ignored this is the result. It is really very simple, the issue is precisely that the voice of the people was ignored. How can we the people trust the democratic leadership when they wholesale railroad the peoples’ choice? Hillary is that choice, but the DNC took it away and awarded it to Barack. Just wat actual number of undecided votes went to Edwards and why were they arbitrarily given to Obama?
The people are asking exactly how will he deal with the very serious issues facing the nation. We don't know and since he has little to no experience, there is no gage to determine how he will act. We do need change but we don't need change for the worse. Hillary is proven and trusted; Barack is an unknown. I for one want a history of action in order to make an informed decision. For me it is Hillary. It does not matter who endorses Obama; I found him lacking and still do.
Give us a choice that is viable!
Nobama!

Nicole in NE   June 16th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

I have so much admiration for Al Gore. Think of how different America would be had he won?

I can't believe the same FEAR propoganda that got Bush elected TWICE is why people will vote for John McCain. This country has gone to crap quick and we need a responsible leader to help us out of it!

McCain votes against equal pay for women, and says women's rights should be overturned as far as Roe vs. Wade goes.

McCain voted against the hurricane Katrina probe twice to see how it was handled.

McCain voted against the new GI bill to take care of our soldiers retunring home.

How can we even say this man fights for most Americans?

It's amazing how easily one's respect for someone can be lost. I know this is purely political, but I thought you were better than that Vice President Gore.

You must know Sen. Obama's "investment" in "green technology" is not a good thing. The inevitable underfunding by the government will do more to hurt the progress forward than it will to help. Let the free market decide what course we should take. Remember, very few cared until gas was $3.90/gal. The market hasn't had time to react.

I'm another Independant swinging to McCain, when the dems were a party open to ideas and moderate, I swung for them BUT not now, they've destroyed the party this time. Why didn't they think before they made this mess a year ago January. It doesn't seem possible that they could lose the election in Nov. but they've done it. How they could make such a mess of it is beyond me. I may swing back to the dems in 4 years if they can get their stuff together and act like Democrats and not spoiled children. We need experience right now with the mess we're in on every front and we nominate someone WHO HAS ONLY RUN FOR OFFICE, TIME & AGAIN, DONE ONLY WHAT WOULD GET HIM ELECTED, never did anything once he was elected. Or if he wins in Nov. I'll stay going with a republican in 4 years.

Welcome back, Al! Don't let these thugs do to the next POTUS what they did to you!

Hopefully he shows Obama how to win the popular vote but still lose the electoral college.

Dear Mr. Gore,

Wake up and smell the coffee! obambam is the worst person to endorse. I was democrat, but not any longer. VOTE INDEPENDENT its our only hope now.

Shame on your, Al Gore.

You should do something to restore the democracy in this hijacked party rather than to endorse someone who indeed has no any legacy for the nominee…

Are you too old to do something to save this party and this country???

Rise up and defeat McCain!!! Every serious Democrat in America should be working to elect Obama….and let's hope that the legacy of Tim Russert's integrity and sense of fair play can influence the behavior of the campaigns….the RNC, the DNC, the PACs and the 527s…..I'm already sick of the pettiness, especially from the McCain side
