Sen. John McCain defended his decision to postpone a fundraiser Monday.
Sen. John McCain defended his decision to postpone a fundraiser Monday.

(CNN) – John McCain on Monday defended the decision to postpone and move a fundraiser that was initially to be hosted by Clayton ‘Claytie’ Williams, a Texas oilman who joked about rape when running for governor in 1990.

“My people were not aware of the statement that he made 16 or 18 years ago,” McCain told CNN’s Dana Bash. “So when we found out that this was planned there we said ‘Nope, we’ll reschedule it and do it some place else,’ and I understand that he’s not attending. That’s pretty much the sum of it all.”

McCain added that the campaign will keep the $300,000 Williams has reportedly raised for him, arguing, “the people who contributed are supporters of mine, not supporters of his.”

He did not answer how he thought this might affect his outreach to women.

“The only thing more insulting than John McCain’s willingness to keep hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign cash raised by Claytie Williams is his attempt to get away with it by simply changing the venue of his fundraiser,” an Obama spokesman e-mailed Monday morning. “It’s clear that John McCain is more concerned with dealing with a ‘perception problem’ than in condemning these despicable remarks or in living up to the straight talk reputation he brags about."

Williams had compared rape to the weather, saying, “If it’s inevitable, just relax and enjoy it.” He later apologized.

This "Whitey" comment is a proven LIE, and a Joke. We all know that there is no Tape, and that Michelle Obama has never spoken from the Pulpit at her former church.

You should be banned from every blog. you never make any sense of your anti Obama statements. Any woman of self respect won't make such a comment in defence to mcain.. Yous opinions are senseless for the record. The man has yet proven to be the so called MAVERICK. accept the money and dump them afterwards just like the lobybist who got him his nomination.

I think everyone that votes for John McCain should also be registered to fight in the war in Iraq. Hey what's just is just. If you don't want to pick up a gun and fight don't let a naive college kid do it either!

I guess when Cindy starts putting on the pounds, or gets looking like that housemother, and didn't have all that money, McCain will be looking for his third below size 0 girl! Of course, she will have to be filthy rich and so proud of her country, while watching illegal aliens clean their house and garden!

The McCain supporters are saying McCain's connections with Clayton Williams is no big deal but Obama's relationship with Jim Johnson is wrong, when all he did was get a great deal on a mortgage loan because he knew someone in a high place. There is so much hypocrisy in politics it's ridiculous. I don't think McCain should be held responsible for what came out of Williams' mouth 18 years ago, just as I don't think Obama should be held responsible for what came out of Jeremiah Wright's mouth 7 years ago. This is what's so sickening about this election. It's not about who can help our country get out of this mess we're in, it's about who can smear who the worst. No wonder we're in the mess we're in.

Kelby from Houston, TX   June 16th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

Give McCain a break, he is old. He is real old. He is so old he still he knows Methusela. He is so old he can't remember what his supporters support or believe.

Another reason why you should give him a break...HE'S BROKE! HE NEEDS MONEY.

Speaking as a woman I am pretty disgusted that he is keeping the money. In this situation, the least he could do is donate the money to a women's shelter of some sort. Also, he has never voted in favor of any women's rights issues. I have a problem with the fact that he dumped his first wife to get with Cindy McCain. Do my fellow female voters really want this man in office???????????

Either McCain is lying or his campaign staff are lying. In other words, either McCain and/or his campaign staff are lying or they are extremely dumb! Either way, just changing the location and accepting the money is an effront to all women and thinking and caring men everywhere. And yet, there are Clinton women supporters who say they will hold their nose and vote for McShame. Shame on them!

BELLE-who says Obama got away with the Rev, fiasco? It was on the news 24-7 for weeks and hurt him in the elections according to all polls. Mc Miilionaire should not get away with this. If he had repect for women (which he does not) he would give the money back. And nobody I know sits in church for 20 years. A few hours a week is more than the average American, who goes to chuch, spends there. People act like he was sitting there for 24hrs a day x 20 years! People change-so to Pastors- some Pastors become alcohlics, druggies, manic by means of bi-polar disorder, etc. If all you self-richess people read you Bible you might recall it is not you place to judge but to forgive.

Don in Florida   June 16th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

For all the negative posts against Obama, it's probably Republicans trying to start mischief and divide the democrats. Don't fall for that. We democrats are united and will send the republicans back home for the next 24 years.

And for those (true) Clinton supporters saying they will vote for McCain. oh well, you do that. it's your choice. But it won't help because Obama will pull just as many disaffected moderate republicans and independents.

By the way to those (true) Clinton supporters threatening to bolt the party for McCain because she didn't win, you're falling for a bag of tricks. Do you really think that the republicans would be saying such nice things about Hillary if she were the nominee? think again. And also remember this, Hillary probably wants to get re elected to the senate and she will need Obama Nation to accomplish that. So think through carefully about bolting to McCain just because she didnt win. If you feel McCain has better policies then Obama then that's a different story, but to bolt just because your candidate didnt win, not a good or very smart reason. Think about that awhile.

grain of salt   June 16th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

Clatyie made that joke when a storm was blowing in during an interview on one of his rances. The joke is an old, tacky joke that compares rape to Texas weather, and he thought it was appropriate at the time. Obviously, that kind of joke is never appropriate. That said, Claytie is a good person who has given millions of dollars to education and has helped many people–male, female, and all colors–without ever seeking credit. He wasn't a politician, and he said something that was politically suicidal. It's sad that people think that the ones who have avoided making such statements in public are automatically better than the ones who haven't filtered themselves as well.

are we in a civil war?   June 16th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

I bet people reading these posts from other countries with no knowledge would think America is in a civil war between Republicans and Democrats.

In terms of politics, I guess it could be a never ending war.

However, the problem is the definition of what people call Republicans and Democrats are changing.

Old school republcans wanted small government, no foreign wars, low to no taxes, etc.

Neo-cons want wars, spending, and no taxes... they closely resemble President LBJ in the late 1960s....

Old school Democrats also believed in small government, but also favored exapansion through military conflict. This can be derived from democrats prior to 1900.

Since 1900, "new-age liberals" or still Democrats have become very socialized in their polices. You could call the democratic party the socialist party and you wouldn't miss much of a beat.

So what I am trying to say is this. You may be Democrat vs Republican in a political war.

However, the meanings of these terms have simply been removed from today's definition.

It's more of the socialist vs. neocons. Either way, the government is bigger and spending more money, which hurts the taxpayers way of life more.

Thoughts?

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   June 16th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

Well, when you need the money, many people justify many things including taking money from questionable sources. I am guessing that McCain can't refuse any money at this point.

To say that any kind of violence is permitted only smacks of disrespect for another person (or group of people). How should any president accept that from people that support him?

There is no excuse for any man to condone rape. It was a well-known statement made a while back, so either McCain is stupid or he thinks that everyone else is to fall for his okey dokey. Why not just give the money back? Obama gave Rezko money back, why can't McCain?

Casey - Sebastopol, CA   June 16th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

@No Socialist, NY

That war was illegal and a mess, too. It took the public to force us out of Vietnam. We can be sorry and have respect for a person who served the country – that doesn't mean he's Presidential or that he'd make a good commander in chief.

I think it shows exactly where McBush is morally and ethically. He's proven that he message is whatever it takes at the time, from his "ethical conversion" on the heels of the KEATING 5 issues to his "family values" when dumping wife #1 to marry the rich woman he was dating on the side. McCain's integrity is BS.

And I think we can safely say that "I will NEVER surrender" is coming directly from his Vietnam experience. NO, I don't want this guy anywhere near the phone at 3am or the red buttons.

And here I thought McCain WANTED women to vote for him...

Bob   June 16th, 2008 2:58 pm ET

Wow . . . I can't believe this is news 18 years later.

Williams is an idiot who should not have been governor – not because of this stupid phrase but for his bad policies. This "quote" is created from two separate ideas he uttered back to back, 18 YEARS AGO! He never supported rape and used rancher analogies – admittedly stupid ones – to try and appear confident, not misogynistic. Thankfully, Ann Richards (w00t!) beat him handily.

Go back and read what Williams actually said and you'll see what he intended, not what CNN says he said. He bungled his words, but he never said rape is good or that he wanted Richards to be hog-tied. His career is over and has no bearing on McCain.

Concerned   June 16th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

Attention Democrats, Republicans, and Independents!

Before voting for Senator McCain, check out how he treated his first wife. The information is readily available on the Internet. I almost cried after reading about the events that led to the end of the marriage of John and Carol McCain. A mid-life crisis is no excuse for a divorce. A man can not trade in his wife for a newer model when he feels ike it. This information gives us a clear indication how he feels about women's rights and women in general. Marriage vows are to be honored in sickness and in health and so forh. How Senator McCain treated his first wife concerns me. Is this really who you want as the next President of the United States?

Ed in Dallas   June 16th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

Everybody please chill out. I was living in Texas back in 1990 when Clayton Williams made his rape comment. It wasn't the only stupid thing he said, but it was enough for him to go from clear front-runner to clear loser in the election that resulted in Ann Richards becoming governor of Texas.

Now fast forward 18 years. I didn't even realize the man was still alive. People who are outraged make several fallacies of logic to get to that point. First, they hold McCain accountable for Williams' comments, second they place the comments in the present day, and third, they ignore the 18 year-old apology from Williams. Three errors in logical thinking to be able to justify moral outrage.

Be careful casting stones. If each of us were held accountable for everything our acquaintances had ever done in their lives, what kind of world would we live in? Hold McCain (and Obama) accountable for their own actions, not those of people they probably didn't even know years ago when something stupid and offensive was said. He distanced himself, so let's move on to something important like the economy, Iraq, health care, inflation, global security, education or a hundred other issues more relevant than what some private citizen who happens to raise money for a candidate said 18 years ago.

Michael   June 16th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

I'll preface this with just saying outright that I am an Obama supporter.

Now; I don't think you can truly hold McCain responsible for what this idiot said so many years back. However, that leeway has to be granted by both sides. McCain just came out last week, complaining about one of Obama's VP vetting team members because he was for a pardon during the Clinton administration. Mad a lot of hay of that one, all while he continues to keep Charlie Black on staff. I think if you're going to hold a standard that you believe everything that everyone connected to you believes as McCain has tried to do, the turn about is fair play. Thus if as JC states that Obama is for killing whity, then McCain is okay with rape, he thinks 9/11 and Katrina was God's judgment and that Hitler was doing God's work....Yes people this is ridiculous to it's very core! I do however agree with "OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT" that perhaps McCain should donate the money raised to a battered women's shelter. But that's totally up to him, I just think if you're going to throw the mud and link a candidate to every person who has ever crossed paths with that candidate, that you're on a slippery slope. Given the number years McCain has been a politician I think that's a slope he doesn't want to get on....

i can understand politicans needing to raise money, and there's probably stink money with all candidates. but this was called out and is now in the public eye, so it shows a lack of character on mccain's part. it makes him look pathetically desperate too.

the fact that mccain has such a hideous record with women's issues and his big fat mouth gets HIM in trouble with women too, he should be a man and give it back. it's not true that all of those people gave money to the loser b/c they support you. they might not have contributed to mccain if loser hadnt asked him. we all know people give money for unsavory reasons, especially when you're talking people of this low caliber; no doubt loser made promises to some of them and that's why they donated to mcsame.

mccain has ZERO integrity, credibility, reliability (his flip-flopping is monumental in politics), and his stability is very questionable too. he is a dishonest disaster and should never be POTUS!!!

This money did not come from Williams it came from other people supporting John McCain. Im a Democrat and I know that. I cant believe Obama had anything to say about this, it took Obama twenty years to break ties with a hatemonger and racist and he has only done it now to try and win this election. John McCain was not friends with this person and as soon as he found this out he stopped the fundraiser at his home and moved it some where else. Shame OBAMA did not do that with his mentor and friends. Hey have you read dear ole Michelle's thesis from Princton. Why dont CNN issue he thesis. I know i write this in vain since CNN does not put comments that show the Obamas in bad light, but the other websites print it.

mcwar just voted against a bill last week for equal pay for women. The week prior he voted against extending unemployment benefits. Too much stuff is coming out about him and its all negative. Besides the fact that I think he has a touch of dementia or maybe he is just plain evil, he'll never get my vote.

Mary   June 16th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Your wife and daughter are women and what he said goes for them also. Will you sell them out for the money? This man has no respect for women and if the price is right neither do you.

judy   June 16th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

His values regarding women and not surprising–I heard McPain dumped one of his previous wives while she was terminally ill and married a better prospect (i.e.rich), then announced it on TV–oh sorry that was the announcement by Rudy, he was the repub that dumped one of his wives on TV.

Upstanding Gentleman   June 16th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

Rape is never something to joke about. I am a man. If Clayton Williams had a daughter and she had been raped, then I do not think it was funny. It is one thing to use poor judgment in private. Williams said this is public. In private is bad enough, but in public that statement is much worse. McCain needs to try to defend dealing with Williams to a roomful of women while that joke is posted on a screen. McCain should then ask the women if that joke was funny. Somehow, I believe he would have to make a quick exit.

Bear in mind this Clayton Williams used direct sexist remarks against former Texas Governor, Ann Richards, when she was running against him for Governor of Texas, comparing her to a cow that he was going to rope and hog-tie. AND, he compared rape to the weather, by saying, "If it's inevitable, just lay back and enjoy it." So, PUMA members, is this the kind of mind-set you agree with by aligning yourselves with McBush?

Republican for Obama   June 16th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

While I don't think you can tie McCain to something this jerk said, you can however expect him to donate the money to charity. The fact that he is cashed strapped and is keeping the money shows a lack of moral backbone. Had he a shred of decency he would have done the right thing even though it wasn't good for his campaign.

I am no defender of of Rev Wright or his sermons, but please tell me exactly when he said that he hated white people? The idea that people try to use the so called '20 years' of attending Trinity as some form of Obama being racist or against anyone who isn't black is far fetched. First please learn the difference between racist and prejudice. There is a difference and we are all capable of prejudging or stereotyping. Second of all, I believe most people on these blogs are guilty of making negative remarks or having bad thoughts about someone or something else, even things you love. Imagine if someone took those remarks and painted you a person who thinks or acts that way 24/7. Would it be an accurate reflection of you are or what you stood for? Again, I am no promoter of Rev. Wright, but I find it hard to believe that he preached negative or hate spewed sermons every Sunday over 30 years. If that was the case, YouTube would have more than just the 4 or 5 sermons.

I stopped attending church because I found some preachers to be hypocritical and judgmental towards other religions and other people. But if someone were to take the words of those preachers and somehow tie them to my way of thinking, I would consider them liars. I have seen preachers baptize members and marry members of the church and I don't think that somehow makes them two minds that think and act alike (Pastor/Congregation).

Now to McCain and his campaign. I don't hold John McCain responsible for what the Texas Oilman said in the past, but I do believe it would have been beneficial for him and his campaign to return the money. It would have gone a long way to show that he truly cares about accountable...and it's not as if he can say he is unaware of this statements. But what do you expect from a person who thinks like a caveman.

Women...read up on your McCain history and his voting record on multiple issues that are meaningful to you and me. Read up on his treatment of his first and current wife. Judge him by his own actions, not by the actions of others. You will find plenty to be up in arms over.

Your people must be really stupid! The Clayton Williams meltdown in 1990 was huge news here in Texas and I am sure that it made waves nationally.

It's hard to believe that McSame's people studied 20 years of Jeremiah Wright video to dig up the GD America rant, but a scandal that decided the governorship of the 2nd largest state in America escaped their notice. I wonder if they are stupid, or just dishonest.

TonyNJHC   June 16th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

Someone should do a back round check on some of obama's campaign contributors. I think one made the news recently. I wonder if obama will help his friend out, or forget him. It must be nice to be able to forget when you wish to. Most Americans would find it a bit hard to forget, much less cut links with a church they attended for the past twenty, yes they say (20) Twenty years. I suppose obama is lucky in that way. But the folks of the ancient city of Troy were not so lucky. In either case, my vote will go to LANDSLIDE MCCAIN! He stood up for America, and he does not wish to change our America. If someone is so concerned with changing America, let me give you some advice. There are Millions and Millions of Americans who love this country and don't wish to see America changed. If you do not like it here, if you think something needs to be changed, then I suggest you go to another land, where the majority of the citizens want change. Your "services" may be needed there. So Run, don't walk, and help out those folks on some distant shore, and explain in great detail to those folks in great need, as to how you will make their life better.

Michael Lorton, Virginia   June 16th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

How can McCain expect to reach out to women after this? And this article left out some of the more sensational aspects of the rape "joke" . McCain supporters are attempting to downplay the matter when rape is the most heinous crime that can ever be perpetrated against a woman. And accepting money from someone who would refer to a woman as a cow who needed to be dragged through dirt is a huge disgrace and the ultimate insult to women and makes John McCain an enabler of this type of sick thinking.

And by the way, to the Hillary/McCain supporters, I hope you're keeping score. This is the man you want as your president. Enough with the Republican status quo, senseless violence in Iraq, "lost" White House emails and other cover-ups! No more Bush, and no more McSame!

Keeping 300k is an insult to all women. Here is my advice to Senator McCain, donates that money to Susan G. Kumen. Stop speaking from both sides of your mouth. anyhow, you donate 300k but still loose big time. Women are more smarter

Cosmo   June 16th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

Ok, so what if McCain denounced the man and didn't accept the money? Then those supporters would contribute it a different way. HE DIDN'T ACCEPT MONEY FROM THE GUY. Why do all you knuckleheads miss the point all the time? If I'm McCain, I say no thank you to the funds that were raised by him and then just tell those same people to donate online.

fred flinstone   June 16th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

What's funny is he hammered Obama about his V.P. searching team. Which was a bunch of B.S. because the person did nothing wrong he said nothing wrong yet he had to resign to not let this distract Obama. Now McShame is keeping the money from a person who said the things he did. when Obama made the DNC give back money and is changing the Fundraising plans of the DNC. Mcshame is doing nothing to change. Give the money back and stop attacking Obama on meaningless things.

Martin Wilson   June 16th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

Looking at things from Canada, I can hardly believe that McCain is even being taken seriously as a candidate for President. This dinosaur has political views that were obsolete in 1975 and sees the bankrupting of America in an immoral war for the next hundred years as the only way to go. Yet here he is with 43% of the polling results. Incredible! I watched with disbelief as Gore and Kerry were shunted to one side for George W. (Warmonger) Bush, so it would seem that picking the wrong guy is the new American tradition. Good luck America.....you'll need it.

Belle   June 16th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

Before you start criticizing McCain on a fundraiser, you might want to check out Rezko and Obama's relationship. A 17 year friendship, not some unknown fundraiser that made hateful comments.

consultantaz   June 16th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

Never ceases to amaze me – JC says "never call Iraq a defeat" ! REALLY! We got suckered into this because of our fears; Congress went along with the lies, the deception and allowed us to be engaged in a war to which there is no "win". We cannot sustain the bleeding of funds to support this major folly and the rebuilding of this pile of sand while Katrina victims still have no communities, Social Security is in serious jeopardy and our National Guard is guarding a foreign country ! The dollar is so devalued because of extreme debt that Sax Fifth Avenue is merchandising in Euros right in Manhattan ! Not sure what you would call it but sure smells like that proverbial "duck" to me. It's 1968 all over again – most either don't care, don't see it , are getting rich off of it or are just plain stupid.

The Bush Twins : George and John   June 16th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

They'll just "reschedual it and do it some place else" ?. Something tells me this Clayton Williams guy will still be involved with McCain some way or another. These oil people find it to their benefit to hang with the repubs. and visa versa. And he claims his campaign people didn't know anything about the comments made by this jerk. Right.

OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT   June 16th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

Everytime I See You Smile Mccain I Will Know You Are Thinking About That Joke!

Tammy - KCMO   June 16th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

The only thing McCain is sorry for is getting caught with his pants down for accepting the money. He at one time I'm sure knew about the statement, even if due to old age he's forgotten about it now.
Maybe he ought to think about donating it to a battered woman's shelter or rape crisis center.
Any woman stupid enough to vote for this idiot in November deserves what they get.

WFK   June 16th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

Just make sure that all those women who said they intend to vote for McCain since Hillary lost the nomination to Obama know what they're voting for: an anti-choice gentleman, supported by hundreds of thousands of dollars raised by a Texas oilman who makes misogynist comments while running for public office. Charming..

Kalifornia   June 16th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

It is not a proven fact that she never said "whitey", chose your words accurately. The only fact is that it has not been proven that she has said it for now. It will come out.

Venus   June 16th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

Ha,ha,haaaaaaaaaa!

This is great!

So... lt's see!

We will have Bitter-Gate and Rape-Gate!

We also have "Rope her like one of hs cattle-Gate!

Go Obama!

Women Decide   June 16th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

John McCain is anti-choice and anti-woman. He vowed to make abortion illegal and votes against breast cancer screenings.

He dumped his first wife after she got seriously injured and permanently crippled in a car accident.

He joked at a GOP fundraiser that Chelsea Clinton was so ugly that her father was actually Janet Reno.

Women make up a majority of voters in America, and women will never put that jerk McCain in the White House.

Bob   June 16th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

Is anyone really surprised? Take the money ditch the man. That's how these guys operate, vampires, and never mind the fact that the guy is an oil man! Oh yeah and Iraq a defeat? Defeat and victory are old terms from the 20th century, we are living in the 21st century those terms and concepts are outdated and hide the real debate on Iraq. It is not a war, it is an occupation, we ousted a dictator fine, but the morons in charge didn't know what to do after, that is what happens when civilian leaders tell military leaders how to do there business ie Rumsfeld, watch Bush's War on PBS to see how little this administration knows about running a "war". McCains language is related more to his baggage from Vietnam than our current debacle.

Matt   June 16th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

Wow.

Obama must be desperate if this is all he can come up with.

stephy   June 16th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

Lets see if the media will hold McCain accountable for this guy's words, like they tried to make Obama accountable for his FORMER Paster's words. As a woman I don't know this man at all, but I am offended by his words.

M.S. Indiana   June 16th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

One day you say be nice to the women and respect them, next day you take money from the camp who wants to treat women like slaves... nice job McCain.... just shows the real face of you and the republican party

No wonder HRC left your party....

pam Eugene OR   June 16th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

I don't want to see McCain get away with this. It is nuts saying he did not know about it! If this had been about Barack it would be first up on the ticker all day.
McCain needs to give the dirty money back and apologize to all women. Of course I could die of old age waiting for that.
Women, how do you like him now?

Steve, Madison WI   June 16th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Hey the Repubs have been raping the Constituion and the American people for years – so what's new?!

jon   June 16th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

up with obama or down with cain who is too old for this time well

Bill   June 16th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

I enjoy the 2 faces of john mccain. He will accept the endorsement of hagee and the money of willimas and will denounce the givers once he is helped. He certainly beats kerry for the flip flop award.

Down with Obama   June 16th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Get over yourselves Obamabots.....Obama is going down!!!!!!!!!

Maryann Rose   June 16th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Hmmm, maybe McCain is just relaxing and enjoying it?

amtFresno,CA   June 16th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

McBush needs to DENOUNCE his friend Williams & RETURN the
$300,000. Obama for Pres 08

Jay   June 16th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Yet another example to show the true nature of McCain.

Sharon Minnesota   June 16th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Who ever said this is way off base: The only thing more insulting than John McCain’s willingness to keep hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign cash raised by Claytie Williams is his attempt to get away with it by simply changing the venue of his fundraiser,” an Obama spokesman e-mailed Monday morning. “It’s clear that John McCain is more concerned with dealing with a ‘perception problem’ than in condemning these despicable remarks or in living up to the straight talk reputation he brags about."
--------------------------------
This is pure rationalization by the Obama camp by blowing smoke to cover up their own sleazy actions in this campaign against Hillary Clinton.

John McCain is an honorable man. I'm happy to see a good man and fair Republican stand up for women and their dignity. It's completely unfair to lump him in with all the former conservatives who made a mockery out of the word conservative. To be fair, we need to listen to Sen. McCain and give him credit for being a stand up guy when it comes to women's rights. Ms. Richards would be proud of John McCain's defense of her dignity.

When Clayton Williams made these remarks, it was a time when women were just getting their footing on equal rights. Times have changed dramatically from then to now and most of us are disgusted with that kind of rhetoric. I'm sure there are still some Neanderthals out there who would get a laugh from his nasty comments.

Ryan   June 16th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Nice job keeping the money someone who supports rape raised for you.. I guess we see where your priorities are.

JC   June 16th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

These republicans don't respect women. They think all women are married and soccor moms. some women are single and don't have children. You republicans are sexist. Who is a single women to vote for? The republicans don't have much to offer with their war machines and their disrespectful attitude towards women. Not every women has 3-10 kids.

No McBush   June 16th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

'EX-HILLARY" SUPPORTERS TURN McBUSHES, KEPT YOUR NEW ANTI-WOMAN GUY, YOU " just relax and enjoy it.”

SAD! SAD! SAD! WHO IS THE REAL JUDAS NOW $300K ??????????????????????????????? wow

Tell me Senator McCain...   June 16th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

How's that working for you – you know, the whole "reach out to women voters" thing? Good luck with that...

Uncle Sam   June 16th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

Thank goodness that Team Obama is engaging in a new kind of politics. If this is change we can believe in, then why does it look so much like the old? Unbelievable.

SteveLeft   June 16th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

Unfathomable, how about unconscionable. There will be no McBush on Pennsylvania avenue. You guys should read all the polls. I like it how McCain is taking a clandestine way to reach out to others with trying to have 10 secret debates with Obama in town halls. Good one McCain, oh so that way no public eye gets to see your impeccable rhetoric and how you "flip-flop" from issue to issue. The right wing will cease to exist come November, just the same way the dreadful Carter administration did it (left congress and left presidency). But this time, don't expect the same mistakes!

Obama '08

Rave   June 16th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

Look at this guy.. what will he do with the Billions he is planning to earn with more fake wars and contracts, that he can't do with the Millions he already has??
These guys don't really understand the true problems of American people. Obama is our only hope and he will win this Election
OBAMA (2008 -16)

mk5112 tx   June 16th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

This is nothing and seems to have some tie that is over 15 yrs ago.
Dont you obamabots have anything better to bring up then this??????

No Socialist, NY   June 16th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

All you McCain haters are so ungrateful. He sat in a POW camp because he chose to serve in the military to protect your freedom, including your right to freedom of speech which you use to try to distort who he really is. If Obama gets in maybe you'll end up in a POW camp, when we're occupied by muslim extremists, and you can re-think the whole issue. Oh no that wouldn't happen – the extremists would just lop your heads off; why waste camp space.

Cooper   June 16th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

Giving back the money would have been probably very popular and would have put him in a better light. It would have been a good way to illustrate the "integrity" and "character" he speaks about having but has failed to show. He missed the opportunity. $300,000 isn't worth the drama.

bridgette   June 16th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

JC it is a proven fact that she never said that. But, I do think it is getting silly that people are blaming these two men for everything other people said a hundred years ago. It is starting to get a little silly.

Brian from Fort Mill, S.C.   June 16th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

"JC June 16th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

Oh please. Lets see how much money Obama is getting from the church of "kill whitey" so he can become president and tries to turn Iraq into a defeat.

No matter what that fool Obama does if he does become president never call Iraq a defeat!"
-----------
So much hate. So little time.

Andrew   June 16th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Williams also said that he would rope his gubernatorial rival, Ann Richards, that he would rope her like one of his cattle - that he would "head her and hoof her and drag her through the dirt."

Time to the Thruth   June 16th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

MaCain, This is a subject the public should judge for themselve if MaCain will take money from someone who likens Rape to how he treats his cows. And MaCain has the audacity to claim he is looking for women vote.

MaCain is just another repubclain claiming to have judgement... only when I suit their evil motives.

Vote Obama for ture leadership.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   June 16th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

This is just a small highlight of how crooked John McCain is.

Mister Anderson   June 16th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Holy Cow! McCain is keeping the money raised by a man who believe women should enjoy the act of being raped?

UNREAL!!!

VOTE 08!!!   June 16th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

Let McCain keep the $300,000. He can have all the chauvinists he wants raising money for him. It won’t win him the female vote and it won’t help him out raise Obama.

Difference in McCain fundraising and Obama’s…McCain takes money from big party backers and Obama is literally funded by us the people. I would like to see McCain translate those backers into votes needed to win in November.

OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT   June 16th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

You Are Not Making Any Headway With The Women On This Mccain! You Should Donate That Money To A Battered Womans Shelter . . . Or Do You Think That Little Of Women! Ill Be You Even Laughed At That Joke And Told It To Your Friends! SHAME ON YOU MCCAIN!

Franky   June 16th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

Of course not, because that's his boy.....

survivor   June 16th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

I am a rape survivor. I think that Senator McCain is wrong to keep the funds that were raised by a man that would say something as horrific as what this man has stated no matter how long ago it was. What a disgrace. I thank God for men that would not have anything to do with such a horrible person.

ben   June 16th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

McSame says his people were not aware of this Jokers remarks back in 1990. That's hard to believe when I remember it very well.

Maggie   June 16th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

He's all about the cash. And if they truly didn't know about the comments, he's got lousy staff.

tornado1972   June 16th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Yea I guess McCain can wash the money and use it!!!!!!!!!

Just give the money to and organization that needs the money oh like you?

urbantexan   June 16th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

Well well well.... McCain ... am I surprised HELL NO.

Robert in Toronto,ON   June 16th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

How on earth can women really vote for this guy. His voting record AND his own comments AND now, some of the company he keeps shows that McCain does not support rights of women.

And do be spiteful and vote for him because Clinton lost is exactly what she would NOT have wanted. Which means you're not listening to reason and voting on emotions – the worst thing you could do.

kingsley   June 16th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

we are so ready for this hypocritical so called straight talk WARMONGER. Repubs please bring him on. we are reloaded. and to the Hillary supporters who intends to pay as back by casting your votes for mcsame, understand whats the issue here. HE GOT NO RESPECT FOR WOMAN. PERIOD.

and one word to describe him WOMANIZER

An old white woman 4 Obama   June 16th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

It's a darn good thing nobody from Brack's background said anything like that, Huh? Heck, Barack can't even sit on a panel with somebody who was even near as controversial as that. That just gese to show me what kind of people we will have in Johnny's White House.

Ruben   June 16th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

I don't think the US and the world would be SO FORTUNATE to have ANOTHER Bush in the future!!!!!

martin   June 16th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

mccain promotes rape?

New Day   June 16th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

well, thank goodness!!!!! now that we fixed this fundraising minutia, I am sure that gas prices will go down immediately.

Shame on McCain and Obama for continuing to focus on this stupidity. How about some bipartisan criticism from Obama and McCain supports to get these candidates to stop this kind of nonsense.

And how about blasting CNN, and the rest of the news agencies for reporting comments from low-level campaign flunkies in order to stir up news?

Loretta from California   June 16th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

As a woman, McCain's "we will keep the money" statement offends me to know end. If you take the money, you might as well attend the fundraiser. And yes, I am questioning McCain's morality.

DEMOCRATS UNITE!!!

Belle   June 16th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

Obama fans excuse listening to hate-filled anti-American sermons for 20 years; yet want to condemn McCain for not remembering every sexist statement made by Republicans. How can they forget that sexist statements have been condoned for so long few people even hear them. Just ask Obama, Sweetie.

Cynthia   June 16th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Shame on you Senator McCain.

jason   June 16th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

they should put clayton williams in prison for a couple days.

see if he takes his own advice...

JJ   June 16th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

WOW! What people will do for money. McCain isn't deouncing the remarks if he's keeping $300K. He's a hypocrite and I can't even fathom the fact that he will elected come November.

JC   June 16th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

Oh please. Lets see how much money Obama is getting from the church of "kill whitey" so he can become president and tries to turn Iraq into a defeat.

No matter what that fool Obama does if he does become president never call Iraq a defeat!

Susan, PA   June 16th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Nice One McBush !!!!
Keep the money of the guy but dump him. You are teaching me a lesson everyday.
