Obama's campaign manager said Friday he could win the White House without Ohio or Florida.
Obama's campaign manager said Friday he could win the White House without Ohio or Florida.

FLINT, Michigan (AP) – Barack Obama's campaign envisions a path to the presidency that could include Virginia, Georgia and several Rocky Mountain states, but not necessarily the pair of battlegrounds that decided the last two elections — Florida and Ohio.

In a private pitch late last week to donors and former supporters of Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe outlined several alternatives to reaching the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House that runs counter to the conventional wisdom of recent elections.

At a fundraiser held at a Washington brewery Friday, Plouffe told a largely young crowd that the electoral map would be fundamentally different from the one in 2004. Wins in Ohio and Florida would guarantee Obama the presidency if he holds onto the states won by Democrat John Kerry, Plouffe said, but those two battlegrounds aren't required for victory.

Florida, which has 27 electoral votes this year, gave the presidency to George W. Bush in the disputed election of 2000. Ohio, with its 20 electoral votes, ensured Bush of re-election in 2004 in his race against Kerry.

The presumed Democratic nominee's electoral math counts on holding onto the states Kerry won, among them Michigan (17 electoral votes), where Obama campaigns on Monday and Tuesday. Plouffe said most of the Kerry states should be reliable for Obama, but three currently look relatively competitive with Republican rival John McCain — Pennsylvania, Michigan and particularly New Hampshire.

Asked about his remarks, Plouffe said Ohio and Florida start out very competitive — but he stressed that they are not tougher than other swing states and said Obama will play "extremely hard" for both. But he said the strategy is not reliant on one or two states.

"You have a lot of ways to get to 270," Plouffe said. "Our goal is not to be reliant on one state on November 4th."

Plouffe has been pitching such a new approach to the electoral map in calls and meetings, according to several people who discussed the conversations on the condition of anonymity because they were meant to be private. Plouffe confirmed the descriptions in the interview.

Plouffe and his aides are weighing where to contest, and where chances are too slim to marshal a large effort. A win in Virginia (13 electoral votes) or Georgia (15 votes) could give Obama a shot if he, like Kerry, loses Ohio or Florida.

Plouffe also has been touting Obama's appeal in once Republican-leaning states where Democrats have made gains in recent gubernatorial and congressional races, such as Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Montana, Alaska and North Dakota.

Obama's campaign has spent heavily on time and money in Virginia, where a Democratic presidential candidate hasn't won since 1964. In recent elections, however, high-profile Republicans have lost there. And in a sign of how serious Obama is taking the state, Plouffe dispatched to Virginia many aides who helped Obama stage his upset win in the Iowa caucuses Jan. 3.

The key, Plouffe told supporters, will be to register new black voters and new young voters in Virginia.

Likewise, Georgia has many unregistered black voters who could turn out in record numbers to support the first major-party nominee who is black, he argued. Plouffe said the campaign also will keep an eye on Mississippi and Louisiana as the race moves into the fall to see if new black voters could put them within reach.

In a telling bit of scheduling, Obama declared himself within reach of the nomination at the statehouse in Iowa, yet another state he hopes to put in play.

Plouffe is warning Democrats that McCain is an appealing candidate who has proved he can take votes from the middle before and could do so again. McCain won New Hampshire as a GOP candidate in 2000 and 2008, thanks in large part to the state's high number of independent voters.

Clinton won Michigan's renegade primary after the national party stripped the state of its delegates for moving its contest to January. Obama's name wasn't even on the ballot. Clinton handily won the Pennsylvania primary in April, gaining strong support from white, working-class voters.

Plouffe argues that McCain squandered his opportunity to reach independent voters in the past three months.

McCain's aides acknowledge frustration among fellow Republicans for the slow-to-start campaign. Even though McCain clinched his party's nomination in early March, his supporters didn't name operatives to run the must-win states, let alone open offices in key states. While Democrats hammered each other in their marathon contest, McCain left aides from his primary states sitting still, waiting for orders. It took more than two months for McCain's national headquarters to approve budgets for the battleground states.

The task, Plouffe said, is to define McCain as tied to Bush on the economy, the war and abortion rights. He said the campaign will go on offense against McCain, besides playing aggressive defense when criticized.

That promise was also given by Obama, who said Friday night, "If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun." Critics have questioned why a candidate who promotes a new kind of politics planned such bare-knuckles tactics.

Among independent voters, McCain and Obama are about tied in favorability ratings in recent polls.

Plouffe in recent days has been making his pitch aggressively — part cheerleading, part sales job. Many of Clinton's supporters remain frustrated with how national Democrats resolved the issue of Michigan's delegates, agreeing to seat all of them at the nominating convention but penalizing them by half for violating the calendar, and Plouffe has tried to quell that frustration.

He wraps up the pitches by asking Democrats to imagine Obama taking the oath of office. On Friday at the Capitol City Brewery, about a block from where that would happen, Plouffe pointed toward the Capitol steps to reinforce the visual.

2 points:

1. To Obama's campaign: You might win without OH and FL but lets try to win them anyway, ok?

2. To Republicans: Enough with the nonsence. You guys have written off quite a few blue states already. This fake outrage to try to garner support for your rapidly-aging candidate is pathetic

first and foremost what is your definition of being american. Sweetie this is the same land that stole the land from the native americans, enslaved nubians, and also took california, arizona, new mexico from the mexicans.

So who really is the anti-american.

John in NY   June 16th, 2008 11:14 am ET

You people that think Obama said that he doesn't care if he wins OH and FL are idiots and just grasping at straws to find something wrong with Obama. Only a moron would plan only one path to victory. Say kind like how Hillary lost or Rudy's FL plan?? Yeah planing only one way to win and not being flexible didn't work too well there did it???

The point is he will try to win more states than past Dems did and have more than one way to win. That is actually the smartest thing any prez has done in a long time. He is smarter than Hillary and McCain, this is why he will make a great prez.

Gadissa   June 16th, 2008 11:14 am ET

CNN. what is wrong with the Obama camp? It looks like they are making huge mistakes. They don't have to say we can win without Ohio and Florida. They have to be fired. May be they are working for GOP.

Oh…., never mind.

Josh Johnson   June 16th, 2008 11:13 am ET

Umm, why is everyone so angry? If you're a voter who believes in what the democratic/republican policies are in regards to: the iraq war, the economy, social issues (like abortion and race), education, and whatever else in whatever order of importance, then you vote for your respective candidate. Saying that a candidate can win without Ohio or Florida isn't arrogant, it's mathematically accurate. How many previous candidates said they could win without Kansas? None, but I'm sure all of them thought that. Presidential elections have never been about uniting the country, if it was, we wouldn't have a two party system.

Gerry   June 16th, 2008 11:13 am ET

THE MSM just want to keep up the slice and dicing. When the last vote is counted, the electoral map will be different than ever seen before.

And it will be blue in a landslide

cheekbrown   June 16th, 2008 11:12 am ET

So far Obama's campaign strategy has been excellent. I am glad that his people have devised a strategy that does not include states that are most likely to be won by Republicans.

Chibeardan   June 16th, 2008 11:11 am ET

270? Without Florida and Ohio? Awesome! This is going to send Republicans into a tizzy trying to figure out what state they should try to rig next.

Man– I can't even read these crap comments anymore. You people are making me lose faith in the ability of America to make any decent and smart decisions. Don't you know how to read? Every time one of these stories comes up, all these stupid comments start pouring in misinterpreting the facts. CHECK YOUR FACTS before you open your mouths. Diarrhea of the mouth, 90% of you people. Obama isn't putting his eggs in any one basket, he isn't ignoring any state, he is just going against what is "always done in politics" and that scares the crap out of you. So he has a different strategy than McCain…thank goodness, because it is nice to see someone think outside the box for once. Let McCain do it his way, let Obama do it his way, but lets cut the criticism to productive criticism, okay? Your foul language doesn't help anyone.

DP, Fullerton, CA   June 16th, 2008 11:10 am ET

To No Spin:

What do you mean by four more wars? McCain is not that stupid like you. Even one will not happen, because Iran will be suppresed hard by the world. And even if all hardest sanctions not work, it's Israel job to finish the line.

The US only help providing space through our allies in Iraq so that Israel can launch the attack easily. But don't worry, it won't happen without the world's agreement (Germany, France, UK, Rusia, China, etc). Although I still am optimism that the sanctions will work.

America is very addicted to oil. Bush has tried hard to be not independent to foreign oil, but it won't happen overnight because it's not easy to do that. It needs several presidencies before finally we will be energy independent. And President Bush has started the job. In the future, there will be more hybrid cars coming in (Bush has talked to Japan about this). Obama only takes the advantage of Bush's efforts. What can he actually do? nothing. Don't hope the Japanese will respect him.

Democrat controlled Congress has blocked Bush proposal for oil drilling in Alaska. If they didn't block it, we would have been able to self supply our country with our own oil. Now not only we rely on Saudis, but also Russia and Venezuela, which are all our enemies (not sure about Russia, but at least Venezuela is our enemy. Don't argue it was because of Bush, Venezuela becomes our enemy now. You can see how tyrant and dictator he is to his people).

Second, Bush initiative to expedite the ethanol has been harshly blocked by the Dems (masked as environmentalists). So you can see it is you the Dems who really make our country is so heavily foreign oil dependent. And this is the result that we can see now.

CNN, if you don't publish this, you can take this for your own input. I am not seeing that my comments are not for the sake of this country. I don't know why you always block my comments. But that's ok, because I also put my comments in a more fair news, Fox News.

Bond_Dallas   June 16th, 2008 11:10 am ET

I don't like this talking point. I thought we were all together as Americans. Saying we need these states or those other states to win and we don't need this and we don't need those is just not Obama message. This is confusing. We need them all,,, we are all together.

Out of many, we are one.

Bob   June 16th, 2008 11:10 am ET

Watch people twist this… I am pretty sure they meant "He would be still be ABLE to win if HE DOES NOT GET Ohio and Florida in November"

He isn't saying that he doesn't need Ohio and Florida, they are just saying that it is possible to win if he doesn't get them.

Stephina   June 16th, 2008 11:09 am ET

Obama is a very arrogrant, naive and in-experienced candidate whose beliefs also include socialism. That combination makes him a threat to the national security of the United States, not to mention the values of capitalism for which our country was built upon.

Obama must never be allowed to step into the White House!!!!

McCain in 2008!!!

For those of you who are Hillary supporters and now say you will vote for McCain, please look at the issues. If you trust no one else to lead you to the correct vote in November, listen to Hillary!

The dem primary season was a hard fought battle and your disappointment is totally understandable. However, voting for McCain is not the answer. Please vote issues…..and that will lead you to Barack Obama as your second choice.

Just think for a moment !

what did McCain accomplish in the senate all these years?
what social conservative values does McCain have to differentiate him from Obama?

What economic difference does he have with George Bush?
Does McCain really understand the minds of the middle easterners?

Who were the George Bush clique of convenience in 2004 (McCain, Guliani, and Schwarzinnegar? - - liberal liberal liberals). So go figure, a true conservative will never vote for McCain and a true democrat would never vote for McCain — economically wrong choice, understanding of middle eastern affairs zero, wrong person to handle the war in Iraq or deal with Iran (no different from George Bush).

I know GWB has shortcomings and failures but he is a true conservative, McCain is a whimp and imposter conservative

I was a supporter for the war but the way the war was poorly managed. You cannot not used civilized war tactics in a theatre where the oposing party use barbaric tactics. The way the way is conducted, it is unwinnable and each and every american life is precious.

Obama experience = zero, McCain accomplishements=zero, Obama judgement= fair, McCain judgment=very poor, Economic value=McCain ~George Bush, Economic values= Obama~ Bill Clinton

Conservatives No McCain!!, only confused democrats will vote for McCain, I am not an Obama supporter, rather sit it out !

Obama is a senator who has fast tracked to the top of the heap without much experience to prove that he would be capable of handling the job.

Those of you have a color problem are missing a few brain cells. 'Nuff sed.

Your reasons for NOT voting for Obama are as mindless as most of Hillary's supporters. You say you don't trust Obama, so why in the world would you want a woman for pres/vice pres who has lied so many times even the press can't keep track? She deliberately ran her campaign into debt in the millions of dollars, yet you want her to run the country?

There are millions of women who support Obama; white, black, Latino, etc. Perhaps you should spend some time investigating what the candidates positions are on the critical issues in this country, before you vote for someone else:)

Can any Obama supporters give me a clear defintion of Obama's "change". What are his policies on Education? He has hinted at subsidizing college much like the socialistic policies of Europe. What most people don't realize is that German "university" is subsidized but they can afford to send less than 20% to college and the rest are weeded out into different schools after elementary education.
I would really like some insight into what he plans to do. I cannot find anything positive that this man plans to do for our country.
Is anyone tired of the gas prices? Well if the US began drilling in and around our own country we could become energy independant. We are not allowed by law to drill in the Gulf of Mexico for "environmental" reasons yet china has rigs in the gulf piping out oil for their own means. As pertains to ANWR: If ANWR were the size of a football field, the drilling area would be the size of a postage stamp.

Why are so many people quickly responding here only to the headline, without reading the entire story first? The Obama campaign clearly did not put it so simply that they "don't need" Ohio or Florida. They said they're not focusing on winning one particular state over another. Try "listening" (ie. reading the story) before speaking!

axt113   June 16th, 2008 11:02 am ET

Aris Katsaris   June 16th, 2008 11:01 am ET

Tim, there are 50 states in America. You may have enjoyed your special privilege of having 90% of each presidential election be about Ohio+Florida, and you may angry at the Obama campaign for arguing you are merely one state, not 25 of them, but you have to recognize that what the Obama camp is saying is factually correct.

Ohio's vote is appreciated and wanted, but you're not anymore the sole decider of the USA elections. If you can't stand that, if you can't stand the fact that other states' votes also matter, your complaints should be directed at the US Constitution, not at the Obama camp.

BW CINCINNATI   June 16th, 2008 11:00 am ET

Why doesn't Obama grow up, and realize the Clintons bring more positives, then negatives. Instead of figuring out how the long shot might work. If he cannot deal with the Clintons, what is going to do with the RNC, John McCain, Irag, the middle east, congress etc.

Citizen   June 16th, 2008 11:00 am ET

Ohio and Florida are very overrated; and have way to many voters who are either unable cast their ballots properly are are just plain stupid. Thank goodness that this two states are being put into their proper place.

And to the poster that mentioned Affirmative Action; it is clear that you do not know what it means, because if you did then you would know that George Bush's whole life has been based upon Affirmative Action. Being born with a silver foot in his mouth, he has attended universities that he was not smart enough to get accepted into on his own merit; he has gotten capital for business that he was not capable of running; and he has been elected into numerous public offices, that he had no actual ability to perform within.

So Bush is an Affirmative Action baby.

Pete   June 16th, 2008 11:00 am ET

First, the article clearly states they will fight for both Florida and Ohio, just not rely on them. So they are not ignoring them. Read next time folks.

Second, Obama and Hillary agree on almost everything. They had to dig hard to find enough differences to debate about. So I can't imagine why anyone who supports Hillary and her agenda would not be naturally drawn to support Barack for president, unless you are voting based on things other than the candidates' agendas, which is questionable.

OBAMBI SUPPRESSES VOTES IN MI & FL   June 16th, 2008 10:59 am ET

THAT'S WHY OBAMA SUPPRESSED FLORIDA'S VOTES. OK. LET'S SEE IF HE CAN WIN. ALL FLORIDIANS SHOULD VOTE FOR MCCAIN TO SHOW THE ELITIST, ARROGANT OBAMA AND HIS SUPPORTERS THAT FLORIDA REALLY DOES MATTER. MICHIGAN SHOULD JOIN IN THAT TOO. OBAMA IS THE MOST UNDERHANDED, ARROGANT, ELITIST, CORRUPT RACIST EVERY TO RUN FOR PUBLIC OFFICE. HIS THREAT OF BRINGING A GUN TO A KNIFE FIGHT SHOWS HE IS ONLY INTERESTED IN WINNING AND NOT IN HELPING THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. HE CAN'T EVEN COME UP WITH HIS OWN IDEAS; CONSTANTLY STEALING HILLARY'S IDEAS LIKE THE GREEN JOBS PROGRAM REGARDING A $150M INVESTMENT AND TALKING ABOUT SOLUTIONS. FLORIDA AND MICHIGAN AND THE REST OF AMERICA - VOTE MCCAIN AND SHOW OBAMA THAT YOU REALLY DO MATTER.

I WILL ENJOY WATCHING HIM LOSE!

Phil - Chesterton, IN   June 16th, 2008 10:59 am ET

You know - that all sounds good….but we are forgetting that never has a president been elected, who has not worn a lapel pin. That's right folks - I know there's a lot of talk about foreign policy, economic fervency, health care, and so on, but let's talk about the REAL issue. Freaking lapel pins.

Gosh, you McCain supporters have your heads so far up your butts that a piece of jewelry has come to define a person's love of country. You know, I think Bush was wearing a lapel pin — right before he dismissed warnings about 9/11 and right before he sold out this country he loves so much in an effort to establish a legacy for himself and NOT his country.

Make no mistake - I want a patriot in office and that is not defined by their ability to accessorize. Tim Russert was termed 'Buffalo's Favorite Son" - How is that possible, McCain supporters?? He didn't wear a Buffalo lapel pin.

Neil   June 16th, 2008 10:59 am ET

"Obama camp: We can win without Ohio, Florida"

CNN, this title is VERY MISLEADING. If you actually listen to what he says, his approach is a 50 state approach, not Hillary Clinton's losing strategy of re-using the 2004 map and just flipping one or two states. That is a very flimsy strategy especially because you're putting all your eggs in one basket. Hence, why Hillary could not win the primary. She put all her eggs in one basket

Change is inevitable.

One candidate has been working extremely hard since the beginning of this campaign. One candidate take a 2 month break after clinching the nomination. If he did not have the enthusiasm to take advantage of his 2 month edge of the democratic nominee, then this republican is voting for democrat this election.

Its time for a nominee who will work, even when up against an unbeatable force (BILLARY)…AND TRIUMPH!

I am still waiting for Obama to address why he had an endorsement from the Black Panthers on his web site which was removed after the Wright thing. I am also waiting for Obama to explain to the American people why he lied about the Wright issue. First he said he was never in church during the controversial speeches then later he said he was. I am also wondering why Obama has flipped flopped on the Iraq war. Back in 2004 he stated he agreed now he says he doesn’t. He has flipped flopped on Israel, Iran, and Iraq. Sounds like Obama is running John Kerry’s campaign.

In comments about the bitter comment its as if you never heard Obama explain himself. He admitted he chose his words poorly. He said he should have said frustrated instead of bitter. He said he should have said turned to vs. cling. He himself said he is not perfect and makes mistakes and yet people seem to not give him any room to be human and back track nor to accept an apology. We all have said things we would like to take back. I suggest that we judge him as we would want to be judged. That we accept his words that it was not what he meant. Lets lighten up and stop picking apart every single word and spinning it into attacks.

thank you "tiredofthecrap" …. I wish people could really start thinking with their critical minds instead of the hidden burning crosses stuck in their mind's eye.

Never mind the fact, as well, that Black people have overwhelmingly supported every. single. Democratic candidate for the past 40 years (including/especially Bill Clinton, and HRC by extension) but now that we vote for a Black candidate, it's "reverse racism." (although Alan Keyes is a little different than the rest of them lol). And don't forget Shirley Chisolm lol !!!!

Never mind the fact that a LOT of people voted because Obama went out and did a MAJOR push to get them registered. He put forth an extraordinary effort to got the extra mile, just like he's doing now with the White voters over in Appalachia working with Tim Kaine and others in VA.

John in NY   June 16th, 2008 10:54 am ET

Vulpine: I am not a real fan of the Electoral College either, but I think its real purpose was to make sure all states would get attention and make sure all states would have a voice in the election. If we did away with it then no one would spend much time outside states like NY, FL, and CA. That is OK with me, but I don't think it would be OK with smaller states.

they aren't writing off Ohio and Florida, they're just saying that it's possible to win without winning those states.

Obama has a 50-state strategy, which is more than McCain can say - he's going to campaign in EVERY STATE, while McCain is going to write off the blue states as a waste of time. read the news, people. Obama cares about every state, and he's going to win states that are usually red.

The Obama campaign has already stated that it has a '50 state strategy'.

In all likelihood, Obama is not going to win every state anyway.
So stating possible outcome of the election IS NOT departure from 50 state strategy.

It is only mis-education or a lack of education, or just plain propaganda reporting that would cause anyone to interpret the campaign's statement as 'writing off' any state.

Sammy   June 16th, 2008 10:51 am ET

People who claim that Obama is anti-American should watch what they say. Is it pro-American for Bush to lie and lead to the deaths of thousands of American troops and Iraqi civilians? But he's our president…

If you don't like Obama, that's ok; but don't say stupid things like he's anti-American. The people that are anti-American are those who are denying basic rights to women, the poor, gays, the disabled, immigrants, you name it; and you know who I'm talking about!

It's these thoughts that keep our country right where it is….headed nowhere fast.
He WON the nomination…..yet he's unelectable.
He's WINNING in the polls against McSame…..yet he's unelectable.
We're "drinking the kool-aid" because we have an eye on our children's future….as well as our own…and we know a good man and a blessing for this county when we see one!

It is truly too bad that the DNC Howard Dean and Nancy P. along with Harry W has ruined the Democratic pary. What was one a party for all is now a party of extreme liberals just as the Republicans was one the party of extreme conservatives. Neither extreme will bring unity to this country only moderation can do that. I does not matter if Obama gets to be president or not he will have no power . He will be able to get nothing done without the approval of Nancy P or Harry R with out the direction of Howard D. that is your true Democratic power. Sucks don't it?????

blah blah blah. i am so sick of hearing florida cry cry cry foul. look at your history or how the votings went in florida over the years. can you guys ever get it right instead of just trying to blame others for your lack of understanding on how it works. hold your primaiesy on time, count your votes right, i.e 1,2,3, etc. not that hard, and another thing, take responsible for your actions. no one stole the nomination from the other. they both ran their races, and one lost. if you do your research and see why she lost, you will find out if wasn't because he smeared her name or that CNN and others favored Obama more given him more positive publicity than hers. look at her history for once, then look at how she tried to use her "i have more experience than Obama, theory. if so, then expereince should have worked for her. it i did not worked for the past eight years of experienced republicans, now did it? we need change. a new kind of change that most of you don't want to see it, period, or the fact that the new change will come from an african-american. get over yourselves. to make this work we have to be color-blind and embrace the fact that someone who has struggled for so many years to be excepted in a country that still won't except him because of the color of his skin and not content of his character, that he still cares about the unity of people of all color, and love for country that is still seeing no other than an african-american. our dream is to be one america, not white, black nor hispanic american. just one america.

"Who is what? June 16th, 2008 10:07 am ET

As long as Obama's supporters keep on calling anyone who isn't pro-Obama racist, the D candidate won't get the supplementary needed votes to win over MC!"
————————————–
For the record, only SOME of the voters who don't support Obama are racist. Here's how we can tell the difference.

If you don't like him because of his stance on issues, such as lack of experience, maybe you think he's too liberal, or maybe you want to continue the war, etc., that doesn't make you a racist.

However, there are many people who think that, for instance, Rev. Wright is the most important issue, and try to brand Obama as the same type of person, just because he goes to the same church, or try to use personal attacks against him or his wife - remember, his wife is not running for office - then you might be racist.

Racists fall in two categories. The first category is the racist who admits that he doesn't like black people. I have some respect for them, because at least they are honest.

The second category is the person who uses the flimsiest of excuses to not like someone, who happens to be black. Those are the ones that I have no respect for, because they are dishonest with themselves and others. That's no way to live, hating someone simply because their skin is darker than yours.

I have no idea if you are, and don't care either way. But you have no reason to be paranoid. If you are, then your true colors will come out sooner or later. If not, then you have nothing to worry about.

Regarding oil prices as mentioned in an earlier comment:
You know why oil prices are high (in the US)? The Dollar is weak. You know why the Dollar is weak? Low interest rates. You know why interest rates are low? Subprime lending seems to be a major cause. You know who can be credited as one of the top 10 individual in this mess? Jim Johnson, former CEO of Fannie Mae. With this in mind, can you tell me why Obama would choose this lightning rod of an individual to work on selecting a VP for him? Talk about bad judgment! With decisions like this Obama should be concerned with winning ANY state he can. Do we really want a Socialist running our country? I say go Capitalism! Vote McCain!

Webster's defines patriotism as love for or devotion to one's country. Who amongst this crowd believes they can see into a person's heart to confirm this in anybody otehr than themselves?

If having your faith questioned, your wife trashed on the internet and Fox News, sacrificing time with your family for 2 years, neglecting your health, suffering from sleep deprivation and eating corn dogs and other unhealthy local delicacies foisted on you by well-meaning folks around the country, is not patriotic then I don't know what is.

Why does the Obama campaign ignore seniors? We realize that the base of his supporters are young college kids and African-Americans, but he cannot continue to cater only to those two groups and expect to win. We realize there are many seniors in FL, OH, and PA and he turns his back on seniors at his peril. I do not like his hits on John McCain because of McCain's age. As a life-long Democrat, my party is barely recognizable.

christina   June 16th, 2008 10:46 am ET

Why is everyone twisting his words? First of all, it wasn't Obama that said these things, it was his campaign manager, and we all know how managers can royally screw up. Put things into perspective before you criticize. Second of all, he didn't say they don't matter, his manager simply said they aren't critical for victory and they aren't going to put all their eggs in one basket. Advice for all–before jumping all over someone, consider the biases of the reporting. CNN clearly made it look like Obama himself said OH and FL didn't matter, when in fact, his MANAGER said they would love to win them, but they aren't going to completely concentrate on TWO states when there are FORTY EIGHT others to help him clinch the nomination.

James, Redlands, CA   June 16th, 2008 10:46 am ET

It is amazing how many of the anti-Obama comments ignore the fact that he had the most delegates from the primaries before even counting super delegates and the most states won. And the only reason he may, and I stress "may", not have the popular vote is because no one is sure how to count the popular vote from the caucus states.

Hilliary didn't lead in those catagories.

People didn't vote for her in large enough numbers to be ahead in all of those areas. Get real and stop making things up about him being given the nomination when it would definitely have to have been given to Hilliary, the person who was loosing in all of those catagories.

And as for patriotism. Many of you think walking lockstep with the government or a flag pin define patriotism. It sounds like we never would have had an American revolution if you had had anything to say about it.

jr   June 16th, 2008 10:45 am ET

Stupid is as Stupid does. Why not consider winning without Michigan too?

jhl   June 16th, 2008 10:45 am ET

it never ceases to amaze me how dumb some of you people are. nowhere does obama say he is going to forsake florida and ohio, thereby creating disunity and "ignoring" certain voters. in fact, his plan actually puts the focus on MORE voters, since he will not be shutteling back and forth between ohio and florida. for the first time in a generation people in states like mississippi, louisiana, and virginia will maybe get a chance to meet a presidential candidate, interact with him, and feel as if they are important to the electoral process…which they actually are. some people need to widen their myopic view of this race and see the whole board, not just two states, which is something i am glad that obama himself has clearly done. (for those of you who still think that he is ignoring voters and throwing them out the window like the dnc did by making florida and michigan follow the rules, myopic means "having a narrow view") this is why education should be the number one issue in our country.

Philip   June 16th, 2008 10:45 am ET

I am simply amazed at how much hatred is being directed toward Sen Obama. You would think that our country was not currently engaged in two wars with no end, or in dept to the tune of trillions of dollars. You would think that the economy was doing fine and that the leadership of the last eight years has been acceptable. It is not just that you all seem so resistant to change its that you seem so hateful towards the person with the message. I am a 59 year old black Viet Nam vet.
Since I returned from the war I have been so dismayed at the way we pee on each other instead of having a normal rational discussion about our problems. Obama is offering a new way of thinking for both Democrats and Republicans. It won't kill us try. Least we drown in our own pee.

Becky   June 16th, 2008 10:45 am ET

Obama and his team is thinking outside of the box. They're not saying that Ohio and Florida don't matter. They're saying they need to make sure they can depend on more than just Ohio and Florida to win. What's wrong with changing up the strategy?

Daniel   June 16th, 2008 10:44 am ET

I don't see how Barack can win Georgia or any mountain state. Colorado maybe, but even if he were to win Colorado he'd still lose without Ohio and Florida. The problem with his wins in the primaries are that they are mostly in red states like Utah, Mississippi, etc. Sure, Obama will probably win some New England states, some upper midwest states, and the west coast, but it won't be enough. Although McCain is not perfect, I think he will emerge to be the stronger choice.

Obama The King?   June 16th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Electoral votes are meaningless when you are ultimately running for King of the World, Emperor of the Planet, and Lord of the Universe!!

Reading monitors is the same as lip synching - when will we see the real Barry?

georgia   June 16th, 2008 10:43 am ET

George   June 16th, 2008 10:43 am ET

agib   June 16th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Well , the gerneral election is no cucus mr Obama , soon ur dream will be over , period.

ADS   June 16th, 2008 10:43 am ET

What I'm enjoying most is watching Obama lead us in a direction we have not gone before….away from the old way of doing, thinking, planning and into a more efficient, thoughtful, purposeful direction. We are not following any old models, these young curious minds are charting a new course from Obama's vision.

From one of those female senior citizens…….GO OBAMA!!!

Spirit of America   June 16th, 2008 10:42 am ET

2000: Reps stole the election in Florida
2004: Reps stole the election in Ohio
2008: Obama stole the election in Florida and Michigan
2008: Dems snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory with an Obama nomination.
Who needs theft when stupidity reigns among your victims?

John Starnes Tampa Florida   June 16th, 2008 10:41 am ET

I hope he CAN win without those two states since the last two elections were rigged there! Demand a paper receipt for your vote!

John in NY   June 16th, 2008 10:41 am ET

LOOK!! If you you people are going to vote McCain then do it already. Just shut your stupid ignorant face already. No one cares anymore. You want to vote Bush again then no one can stop you just as no one stopped you the last 8 years.

I know you don't want to hear it, but the only real differences between Hill and Obama are race and gender. All the other stuff is meaningless garbage and no reason to Clinton and then vote McCain. You most likely are a ugly bigot unless you really do agree with McCains policy, but if you did why they hell did you vote Clinton??? Yeah, exactly.

Being a patriot isn't about waving a flag around like an idiot or calling other people unpatriotic. America is an idea that all people deserve freedom and equality. Defending those ideas makes you a patriot. Just waving the flag and calling names makes you a poser and hypocrite.

indy dem   June 16th, 2008 10:41 am ET

This has been POORLY reported. The campaign didn't say they were writing off FLA and OH. They outlined possibilities that would have been out of the question in past election cycles. If anything, it proves the strength of Obama's candidcacy. Ohio's economy is in the toilet. It's inconceivable that McCain wins that state when his economic "plan" denies the harsh reality that millions of Ohioans face.

GaVoter   June 16th, 2008 10:41 am ET

There is no way Obama will win Georgia.

We believe in less government and less taxes here, a flavor of life you city slickers just can't taste. And besides, too many racists live in the red states…, according to the progressive media that's currently overlooking Obama's 90% race vote.

Yep, this is shaping up to be a lose, lose for all of us. What did you expect when you nominated a Jr. Senate for President? Jimmy Carter?? Bill Clinton???

And you progressive's claim to be the higher educated, "smart ones"… Ha Ha!!

Tom   June 16th, 2008 10:41 am ET

Yeah, good luck with that. Nice work on disenfranchising two key states even further while spewing your b.s. about unity. Now, tell everyone how you're so arrogant that you're sure you don't need MI or TX either. What the heck, might as well throw in CA for good measure and top it all off by tossing 18 mil or so of the Clinton supporters on the fire also. There, that ought to do it.

Why would we want someone for president who, among many other ills, continues to, in purely arrogant moves, dismiss states as unimportant??

Jerry   June 16th, 2008 10:40 am ET

AmericaDownTheTubes - another racist american.

SIngadude   June 16th, 2008 10:40 am ET

Do republicans understand what the word "strategy" means? If you have $100 to spend, you don't spend a large % of it on states you have little or no chance in, you spend your biggest % on battleground states. McCain? nice guy, better than Bush (not hard to do) but Obama is for real.

Obama 2008!!

scat398   June 16th, 2008 10:39 am ET

Actually, Obama might be able to win the presidency without winning ANY states. He just needs to moan about racism and the Washington establishment and hand to him on a silver platter. Truth is, his style of thug politics will cost him many, many states.

worst post of the day.

Theresa in Georgia   June 16th, 2008 10:39 am ET

Well, I guess I really don't need to vote in November if the voters in Florida and Ohio that their votes are the only votes that will count or make a difference. Wow! Florida screwed up the 2000 election and Ohio handed the election to Bush. Now we are all paying for the Bush Administration mistakes!! Thanks again Florida and Ohio!!!

Vulpine   June 16th, 2008 10:39 am ET

In all honesty, in this day of instantaneous communications, the Electoral College is obsolete. It's purpose was to represent their respective states when communications took days, weeks and even months to move from one side of the country to the other. That situation no longer exists and I believe each and every voter should be able to be counted as an individual rather than as a collective group.

We are not ants. Let's stop acting like a hive.

Murf   June 16th, 2008 10:38 am ET

The Obama camp is beginning to think outside of the box. Doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result, is insane. So, how then, will it benefit the Democrats to attempt to win with a strategy that has failed twice? It wouldn't. They have to start thinking of ways to get around the Florida and Ohio problem. Two States can't be allowed to dictate the future of the entire Country. This is indeed a 50 state strategy, b
