Jeb Bush has long been considered a likely presidential candidate.

(CNN) – For only the second time in nearly three decades, there won’t be a Bush on the presidential ballot this November. But that absence may not be a permanent one, the current White House occupants hinted Sunday.

President Bush was asked by a SkyNews correspondent whether the end of his term marked the end of the Bush presidential dynasty that began with his father’s Oval Office tenure 20 years ago.

In response, Bush singled out his brother, who has often been mentioned as a possible Republican presidential contender. "Well, we've got another one out there who did a fabulous job as governor of Florida, and that's Jeb,” he said. “But you know, you better ask him whether or not he's thinking of running. But he'd be a great president."

There had been wide speculation in 2000 that Jeb Bush would enter the Republican primary race that was won by his brother.

During the SkyNews interview, first lady Laura Bush added that public service was an "unbelievable” life.

"One of the reasons George and his brother, Jeb, served in office is because they admired their father [Presient George H.W. Bush] so much," she said.

Asked whether that meant her husband was not “the last Bush," she responded: “Well, who knows. We'll see."

I hope I never see another Bush in the White House. But nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to politics. People have very short memories. I don't trust the American voter!

b   June 16th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Heaven forbid!!!!!!!!!

Brian, NJ   June 16th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

We infortunately elected the wrong Bush in 2000. Jeb is the best of the three but won't get a change because of his brother.

Then again, no one thought any child of the Nazi appeaser Joseph Kennedy, Sr. would get elected President…

I will vote for Jeb Bush if Hillary is not on the ticket!!

Can you all see how stupid that sounds!! Say no to a Bush 3rd term.

Vote for Change!

I think once he is out of office and indicted for treason next year. The name Bush will go down in a fire ball.

Jason, Koloa HI   June 16th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

Who's next in the Bush dynasty? You mean for the guillotine? How bout' all of em'. "Let them eat blade flavored cake". Treasonous elitist vermin are not American, they are a digrace to humanity.

MN   June 16th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

The Bush dynasty is not ending. The mismanagement of our economy, the shredding of the constituion, the decline of the U.S. brand in the global community due to the disastrous Iraq war and failure to lead in climate change, as well as the failure to establish a sustainable energy policy and disappointing lack of investment in education, healthcare is the true legacy of this Bush. It will take decades to turn this damage around.

If I were Jeb, I would change my last name.

Chad in Cincinnati   June 16th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

Worst… President… Ever…

what do you think???

An Independent Hillary   June 16th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

No more BUSH!!!!

David, Doylestown, PA   June 16th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

First, this is America and we should not have royal entitled families dynasties here. Second, we've had ENOUGH Bush politicians, just as we've have enough Clinton politicians. Hopefully Bush has tarnished the family name enough after his completely DISGRACEFUL 8 years that we will NEVER have another Bush in high elected office again!

Thall999   June 16th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Maybe on the LIL' Bush Cartoon Jeb would be elected and FL would be culprit again!

Daniel FL   June 16th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Nope. We have finally learned to listen to what our mothers told us when we were little. That is to "STAY OUT OF THE BUSHES"! There are to many snakes, ants, spiders, and disease-carrying rodents that reside in Bushes. Children shouldn't play in Bushes.

Jenny   June 16th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Personally it think Jeb Bush will be a much better president than McCain.

Jeb Bush will only need to win all the states his brother won in 2004, we know Frolida will be an easy win for – he might loose Iowa but if he win OH, NM,CO and MO he will be in.

Jeb Bush 2012 – and his Veep should be Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, this will help him win OH.

Jeb BUsh/George Voinovich 2012

Jim   June 16th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

No. No way. Never. NO!

chuck   June 16th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

This is the son who was supposed to be in the White House in 2000. Not the one who snorted coke, lost millions of dollars in investments, was arrested for a DUI, and who cheated on his wife. Maybe things would have been different is Jeb was in there. At this point the kook in there now has ruined it for anyone named Bush to ever be elected president. The only people to elect a "jeb" into the whitehouse would have to be relatives of the Clampetts.

David in Florida   June 16th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Jeb is a very good Governor, I voted for him twice.

I do not however want him as President for the current moment.

I think he is much better than his brother and will offer more to the American population than some Flavor-aid tainted "Change" offered by Obama.

To me anyone that would demonize Jeb for running for President simply based upon his last name and support the inexperienced and untested Obama is simply out of their mind.

Just remember he's for "CHANGE" and nothing else. Untested, No experience, supports higher taxes and losing in Iraq.

WOW Barack sounds like my kinda guy!!!

Vote with common sense and experience vote McCain 08!

jim   June 16th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

THIS ISN'T GREAT BRITAIN. Enough with the neo-monarchy. No more Bushes and Clintons monopolizing our great nation (which was founded on the principles that we could elect our leaders instead of having those leaders appointed from birth or marriage). Let's move on and elect someone new.

Hell No ! I never want to see another Bush in office !! It's bad enough we have McCain running as he's just the same as the brainless twit we have now. No more Bush !!

Concerned   June 16th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Living in Florida, I was very in tune with Jeb's policies. He was very in touch with public/private development which helped attract new businesses in this state.

What I am concerned about is his inability to manage his own family. His daughter in and out of rehab and Jeb Jr. was caught in the act with an underage girl.

Needless to say, when your life could be a feature on a Jerry Springer show, it is very hard to listen to him talk about his family being paramount.

scott,manchester NH   June 16th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

I feel sorry for Jeb – he got screwed over by his brother. I think he would make a great president, but his chances were destroyed by GWB's performance as president. It's a real shame.

Mike   June 16th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

There was no Bush on the Presidential Ballot in 1996. It was Clinton-Gore vs Dole-Kemp.

Ted   June 16th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

It's not the first time in nearly three decades a Bush isn't on the ballot. Clinton ran against Dole in 1996.
Also, please no more Bushes, HW was alright, W was one of the worst we had, and Jeb….*shudders*

I think Jeb's to smart for that. Anyone can see that he wouldn't win(at least not for another 20 years). Why would he waste his time with that then? He's to good to be president…

First of all if anyone in the Bush family had any common sense at all they would figure out that a third Bush as commander and chief will NEVER happen. This country had been through some terrible times over the past 8 years and I don't think the voters are stupid enough to give this family another shot at it. It just shows how naive and frankly STUPID our president is with his 28% approval rating.

Erik B   June 16th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

that's scary.

We've had one mentaly handicap president, and we have a senile one on the ballot this year, if McCain wins, and this country still exist Jeb will be sure to destroy it.

Just the thought of another "Bush" in the White House makes me cringe. There is hope in the world community that with this Bush gone the US will improve it's image. I'd say Bush number 2 has dragged us down to such a degree that a Bush number 3 would hopefully be an impossibility.

I don't know the accuracy, but I once read political commentary that suggested the Bush family plan was George HW, Jeb, George W. I don't ever again want to see another Bush, Clinton, or Kennedy in office. Enough is enough. We need to enact term limits to get rid of the politicians on both sides of the aisle (like Robert Byrd of West Virginia) who spend their lives enjoying the overly generous perks of public office, while doing nothing but waste hard-earned taxpayer dollars in distributions to those who didn't earn them.

This nation needs statemen, not politicians. Unfortunately, those men and women of integrity who could run the country well are busy running their own lives and business well, leaving the field of governing open to egomaniacs and socialists.

Chut Pata   June 16th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

I knew it was coming. With Kennedies and Bushes (Clinton wannabees) USA will soon become a third world country with family fueds and ruling dynasties like India (Gandhi Family), Pakistan (Bhutto Family, Sharif Family), Bangladesh (Mujib Family, Zia Family), Philippine (Marcos Family, Aquino Family) etc.

I hope Obama wins this time and the next time and then a Latino or Jew win in 2016 and put an end to political dynasties.

One Bush was enough, second was not needed, third one should not be talked about.

What is this double standard about? Why am I not hearing anyone mention that Mccain said it was tough to be proud of America only 2 days ago. In a town meeting on saturday, June 14, Mccain said it was tough to be proud of America while responding to a question.

Isn't that Un-American? Why is no body talking about it? CNN, what is this cover-up about? We all know that if those words had come out of Senator Obama's mouth, there would have been no other report today than that.

Shout it loud. John Mccain says 'it is tough to be proud of America'

You are not fit to be the president of a country that yu find tough to be proud of.

DJ, LA, CA   June 16th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Figures…I knew he would circle around the wagons and wait in hiding for a THIRD Bush President. They should create new laws to prevent husband/wife or father/son/brother dynasties from dominating the White House or Primary Elections.

This is getting ridiculous…people are sick and tired of the Clintons and Bush's.

Proud American   June 16th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Some people are thinking about voting for McCain which says alot since he has the same policies as Bush. Having a third bush in office seems plausible. sad but true.

Bush 88, Clinton 92, Clinton 96, Bush 00, Bush 04… I think this is enough with families controlling the whitehouse, we don't need Clinton or Bush 08, 12, 16… this is a democracy not a monarchy.

"For the first time in nearly three decades, " – 1996 was 12 years ago. Hardly "nearly 3 decades"

Please, please, pleeeease run, Jeb Bush.

It's looking like the Bush family might be the best thing to happen to the progressive movement in a long time.

Anne   June 16th, 2008 1:11 pm ET

Jeb did a good job here in Florida but he made ti clear then he was not planning to run for president. Maybe this is a Bush with the family brains.

I have heard Jeb is alittle more Liberal then the 2 others…I dont care. We dont need a dynasty as we have already. No more Bushs'

Jeb had a chance to before big brother screwed everything up.

He sounds like a more thoughtful and prudent guy but I would not want to take a chance on him.

For the first time in nearly three decades, there won’t be a Bush on the presidential ballot this November. – There wasnt a Bush on the ballot in 1996.

In retrospect, I believe that the first Bush would have been more than enough. The twelve years of the Bush Dynasty have been the low points in our American history. We certainly don't need another Bush.

DQ   June 16th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

" For the first time in nearly three decades, there won’t be a Bush on the presidential ballot this November."

What about 1996? Dole-Kemp?

unions are not stupid   June 16th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Good lord if they think his brother has a ghost chance in hell of winning they are completely buts! Talk about winning by a landslide!

I bet that is the reason though they have Mc Cain running this time they want to get rid of him because they know they are going to lose

McCain IS ANOTHER BUSH , WE NEED TO STOP HIM .

Andy   June 16th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

First line: "For the first time in nearly three decades, there won’t be a Bush on the presidential ballot this November."

What about 1996? I don't remember a Bush on the ballot, but I suppose I may have forgotten.

Joe   June 16th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

The first phrase is inaccurate — no Bush was on a ticket in 1996.

Mavik   June 16th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Was a Bush on the presidential ballot in 1996?

Three decades? So then the '96 election between Clinton/Gore and Dole/Kemp doesn't count?

FactCheck   June 16th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Technically, that may be correct. However, since McCain's platform is essentially an extension of the George W. Bush platform, Jeb would be the fourth.

Fool me once sham on you.
Fool me twice sham on me.

We have already been shamed by the Bush’s. This country would become a laughing stock to elect another.

Greg, NY   June 16th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Ha, yeah as if anyone would ever vote for a Bush again. I kinda wish he ran this year to prove that fact.

The president may not be the last Bush to run for public office, but he's certainly the last one to be elected.

Cynthia   June 16th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Please no more Bushes – they are the reason why we are in the shape we are.

Ryan, New York, NY   June 16th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Why even bother to have elections when executive is turning into a competition between two families?

It's ridiculous to think that, in a nation of 300 million people, the only qualified people all come from the same families.

No more Bushes, No more Clintons.

Carmen   June 16th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Seriously? Do they honestly believe the country has not had enough of the Bush dynasty?
