Obama praises new hire - estranged ex-Clinton campaign manager

(CNN) – Barack Obama had high praise Tuesday for Hillary Clinton’s former campaign manager, who recently joined his campaign as chief of staff for his yet-unnamed running mate.

“Patti Solis Doyle I think is a terrific, experienced campaign hand,” Obama told reporters aboard his campaign plane. “She’s from Chicago. Her brother and I organized on the southeast side of Chicago when I first moved to Chicago as a community organizer, so I’ve known the family for a very long time.”

“I think that she will bring not only a set of skills that we're going to need as we put our ticket together but she’s going to be a terrific adviser and offer insight and judgment that will help us," Obama added.

CNN’s Jessica Yellin reported Monday that the Clinton campaign is angry about the hire. Solis Doyle left the campaign in February after a string of disappointing primary results and rumors surfaced before Clinton even bowed out that Solis Doyle would join the Obama campaign.

A top Democrat close to Solis Doyle told Yellin that Solis Doyle would not have accepted the job if she believed Clinton would be Obama's choice for vice president.

On his plane Tuesday, Obama also addressed the boos for Clinton he tried to silence at a rally in Michigan on Monday night.

“When I got out there I shut that down, and made very clear that Senator Clinton deserves respect. She ran a great race and we are moving forward because we want to win in November,” said Obama. “You know I think people were still in primary mindset, and we're moving into general election mindset.”

God bless Obama for giving this woman a chance. Everyone deserves another chance. I am sure if most of you got fired you would want someone to rehire you. Stop hating on the woman or Obama.

Vote for McCain if you want to but if you do make sure you have plenty of money and expect your grandchildren to go off to war in Iraq because McCain is going to let this ugly war rage on and on. There's not going to be many more volunteers for the military after doing 3 and 4 rotations. So, a draft may begin one day soon if McCain is president.. The war is draining the economy here in America. New Orleans is still not rebuilt yet and Iowa will be joining them. We have no money to fix our own problems, There's people here in America starving and homeless. Many of them are veterans. So, vote for McCain and see what the next 4 years will do this economy.

I think that hiring Ms. Doyle was a well thought out decision. There are several reasons why. One she will be able to help Obama and the democrats gain support from three very important groups(women , hispanics, and also act as a conduit for other Hillary staffers to make the transition to the Obama Camp).
Due to the fact that Ms. Doyle has been selected as the chief of staff for the vice president, I think that the Obama camp is close to selecting there v.p. candidate. It seems obvious to me that by making this decision, she had to meet with the finalist.
I don't understand why so many people are upset over this hiring. Ms. Doyle has work for Hillary since 1991 and has been a loyal supporter of her's. I think that this is what the demcrats must do to unite the party. The fact that she was fired by Hillary was more of a professional decision than a personal one. Some people and groups are just trying to find any reason to divide and conquer.
    Brilliant Move Obama Camp.

These Hillary supporters who act this way are just making themselves look stupid. They behavior will cause more people to move from Clinton to Obama the longer it lasts. So keep it up. You're just making it hard for Hillary to ever get another chance. If Obama loses, she'll always be known as the reason the Democrats lost.

When Clinton gave her concession speach, there were people booing Obama and she said nothing. When Obama was giving his speech and people booed Clinton, he scolded them and told them to show her the respect she deserved.

As for Solis Doyle, she got fired...is she supposed to sit at home and collect unemployment??

This is how is was during the entire primary, he constantly defended her yet her supporters accuse him of disrespecting her. Clinton supporters can threaten all they want about voting for McCain. It's your choice just quit whining about the nomination being 'stolen' from Senator Clinton, SHE LOST, get over it, move on, go to the voting booth, take a deep breath, take a minute to think about what you want for our country for the next 4 years, then make your selection. No one wants to hear about it. Thank you.

  7. Republican for OBAMA!

To all the hillary supporters who are now threatening to back McCain. ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR NARROW, PATHETIC MINDS!!! Look at all the misery bush has put upon this country and the world as a whole. YOU WANT 4 MORE OF THAT!!!

I didnt back Hillary because of her history and her moral standing, but to back mccain over obama. Are you just plain dumb!

Its clear Hillary couldnt look beyond her own ego and back the better candidate when she clearly was out of the running. This is understood. Its up to the voters now to correct that misjudgment and come together. We cannot afford 4 more of bush/cheney inc.!!!

Clinton can't tell Obama who to hire. He just let the Clintons know who is in charge. She said and did too much to have that job.
Obama08 with or without PUMA or Clinton.
Clinton can't even get her so called 18 million supporters to send her a $1.00. Until they pay her dept they should shut up.
Obama08 with or without PUMA or Clinton.

This isn't Romy and Michelles High School reunion. This is really getting tired. Doyle does this for a living. Why should she be denied a job because Hillary fired her? I agree with Sandy above. The campaign went extremely negative after her departure. Perhaps Doyle is a true Democrat who chose not to divide the party just to win a nomination? She was certainly better for Clinton than Penn, who did a real job on Clinton's campaign, didn't he?

Well, this is interesting – I am voting for Obama – for social policy reasons, like, umm, my civil liberties, but I don't care if he loses because I am, umm, wealthy and can pay for my civil liberties unlike, i suspect, the lot of you screechers here – happy days and cheers my brother and sister citizens – heh

  16. A WEAK MAN!!!!!

Todd............. She probably is the one that sabatoged the Clinton's for this very reason. What a mockery!
I wish her well, and Obama well, he is going to need all the support he can get without a majority of the Hillary supporters...............I can excuse The WOMEN SUPPORTER OF HRC BUT I CAN'T STAND TO SEE A MAN CRY !!!!!!!!!

Oh and by the way, too Todd, you said that, "I wish her well, and Obama well, he is going to need all the support he can get without a majority of the Hillary supporters!" Todd 25% of Hillary voter's who are saying that they will not vote for Barack is not a majority, it is not half. it is one quarter. Todd if there is one thing that is certain, not to many things are 100%. So the 25% of Hillary supporters who will not vote for Barack, were not going to vote for him any way. The reason why I say this is because if they feel that McCain is the best option, than they are uniformed and don't understand the relevance of this time in US history. They are the same people who complained about Bush for 7 1/2 years and then ask for 4 more from McCain. These people make me wonder, is it more important to them to suffer and make a point, or relent and get relief. Don't spite your Nose for your Face.

First, you're right, it is hard to respect those who show disrespect. But I see no disrespect coming from Obama, Doyle, or HRC with regards to hiring Doyle. Clinton, in her finite wisdom, choose to go with someone who was loyal rather than someone with prior expirience running a campaign. To blame Doyle entirely for HRC's demise is truely insulting of epic proportions.

The REAL question here is WHY is Obama hiring the VP's Chief of Staff? Doesn't the VP usually hire their own chief of staff? Whether it's Patti Doyle Solis or anyone else, Obama should leave that decision up to the VP so they will have someone they like and trust.

I don't think this was a good "judgement" call on Obama's part, plus he needs to trust his chosen VP to be able to handle the staffing of their own office. As top "manager" of our country, Obama needs to delegate the small stuff to others as he will not have time to micr-manage.

Obama is very transparent – Mr. Nice Guy, very on the surface, so many feel free to call him Barrack – what kind of authorative presence is this? This guy is too user-friendly and our enemies will see right through him (which is very easy to do). Where's the core? Write-in the guts and grit candidate – write-in Hillary Clinton on your November ballot and send Hillary where she belongs – to the Oval Office.
