President and Laura Bush speak with Vance Wilson, the Headmaster of St. Albans School in Washington where Russert's wake is being held Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush and his wife, Laura, went to a wake for Tim Russert, the television newsman who died last Friday.

Bush and his wife rode in a short, unmarked motorcade to St. Albans School in Northwest Washington, where the wake was being held Tuesday in the refectory.

White House press secretary Dana Perino said that Bush wanted to pay his respects and offer his deepest sympathies to the Russert family.

The funeral for the 58-year-old of NBC's "Meet the Press" is scheduled to take place Wednesday.

Is it possible that he is expressing his genuine respect and sympathy
to the family rather than be suggested by some who seem to know it all.

martin,arkansaw   June 17th, 2008 6:33 pm ET

wouldnt want him at my wake.

pam Eugene OR   June 17th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Good bye Tim. You will be missed. I was lost Sunday morning without you.

vw   June 17th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

Respect you, president and first lady.

A CANUCK   June 17th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Tim Russert had the most honest show on TV…….and he was a true gentleman. Sunday mornings will never be the same. They say the good die young. It's so sad for us and his family.

Alicia   June 17th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

I will miss Tim on Sunday mornings. My deepest of sympathies to his family for their loss.

**Not many individuals make you feel like you know them, through television. A true genuine man.

Denver Dem   June 17th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

No disrespect to Tim Russert. But Why is it the President can go to a wake of a reporter, but can't make it to the wakes of the 4000+ killed U.S. Soldiers?

His priorities are jacked just like the remaining 27% that believe this fool is good for them and the country.

Cynthia   June 17th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

God bless and be with the Russert family in this trying time. Meet the Press won't be the same.

Beverly, NYC   June 17th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

Rudy NYC: No shortage of self esteem on your end bud.
You sir are no Tim Russert.

Lynn   June 17th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

I will miss watching Tim on Sundays. But you have to admit he had his favorites.

Uncle Fester   June 17th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

Tim, you were a national treasure, and will be missed deeply.
I feel like I actually knew you after all these years. My heart goes out
to your family. Rest in Peace.

Jon   June 17th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

Although not one could replace Mr. Russert, I think Norah O'Donnell would lend a new stamp on Meet the Press going forward. She would provide a new beginning to the show. She was a decibel of Mr. Russert and I think would do an excellent job once she returns from maternity.

gordon   June 17th, 2008 5:24 pm ET

Tim death is a loss not only to his family and freinds but it's a loss to the country. I saw his first Meet the Press and the last one. He will be missed! My vote is for David Gregory to take the seat.

MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOUR FAMILY …..

Carol, San Luis Obispo, CA   June 17th, 2008 5:08 pm ET

There is a special place in heaven for Tim Russert. What an amazing man. He asked questions I would have wanted to ask. He would explain political concepts in every day terms without coming across as talking down to anyone. Always a smile. Always kept his personal choice for candidates out of his journalism.

He must be holding some fantastic conversations and interviews up there in heaven.

What a wonderful model for journalists, parents, sons/daughters to emulate.

joseph   June 17th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

On sunday morning I would take my TV remote and flipped between CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox11. to watch the political discussion

And each time I would end up watching Meet the Press.

Thank you Mr. Russert. I am going to miss your show.

Xavier, Saint Louis, MO   June 17th, 2008 5:03 pm ET

Tim Russert will definitely be missed. I still can't believe he's gone. However, God knows best. May Tim rest in peace. My prayers are with his family.

Oh, and that was very thoughtful of Bush and the first lady.

Margi   June 17th, 2008 4:54 pm ET

My sympathies to the family. He was in a league of his own. He had rare qualites, honesty and respect, that I never see on ANY of the networks. They should all strive to be like him.

J.C.W.   June 17th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

Our family will miss Tim very much, He was our window into the true workings of washington thru his program which we watched every week. Our prayers are with the Russert family

JED   June 17th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

I hope that networks and journalists will carry on Tim's 'torch' for ethical journalism.

TAHARI in CT 4 OBAMA   June 17th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

When I turned on the TV Friday night and heard Keith Olberman talking about Tim Russert with Chris Matthews I thought they were talking about Russert Sr.

When I heard it was my TV pal Tim I couldnt believe it. It hurt. Tears came. I couldnt believe it.

It wont be the same on Nov. 4th without him.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   June 17th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

Do you people who are bashing Bush here think you can allow him to pay his respects without turning it into a political event? Although Russert was tough on his interviewees, he was always courteous.

Ian   June 17th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Bush does something thoughtful for once.

GARY   June 17th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

THE GREAT THING ABOUT TIM RUSSERT IS YOU NEVER NEW IF HE WAS A DEMOCRAT OR REPUBLICAN HE WAS VERY FAIR AND ASKED PEOPLE QUESTIONS WE THE PUBLIC WANTED TO KNOW WE KNOW MSNBC IS OBAMA NETWORK AND FOX IS MCCAIN NETWORK THE FUNNY PART IS I WAS HAVING CHEST PAINS AND WENT TO THE HOSPITAL I HAD BLOCKAGES IN HEART AND THEY DID A CAUTERIZATION ON ME AND I HAD 2 HUGE BLOCKAGES PLEASE MEN AND WOMEN GO TO YOUR ER IF YOU HAVE CHEST PAINSDO NOT WAIT MY CONDOLONCES TO TIMS FAMILY HE IS IRREPLACEABLE

TIAJA22   June 17th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

Funny how Bush goes to pay respect for Russert, but could not go to LA and show any support for the Katrina victims. Why is he still in office?

linda n carolina   June 17th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

God speed Tim…..Your life….Your love of family….Your love for this country……..this is the American dream we all wish for our own childern.

big ed   June 17th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

McCain has no capacity to handle situations where respect is necessary. In all honesty, could you see him meeting with World Leaders? If you think anyone could be worse than George

When asked yesterday by reporters what it was like to be interviewed by Russert, McCain said with a smile, "I once told him I haven't had so much fun since my last interrogation at prison camp."

DOOFUS Cape Coral Fl   June 17th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

I feel as if I lost a member of my family. Tim Russert raised journalism to an art form. My love and prayers go out to his family.

To Dolald Nick and the others...   June 17th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Tim Russert has equally criticized MSNBC for it's very biased left viewpoint. Russert was the last of a dying breed. He actually talked about issues without a biased opinion on politics and let the people viewing decide for themselves what to make of an issue or politician when they spoken on his program.

It sickens me to know that some people came on here to try to take a cheap shot at people that may view certain issues differently when coming to talk about the death of a good journalist…

shame on you….

Fay Tx   June 17th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

I will personally miss you, TIM…….MY thoughts and prayers are with your Family ……….To the Russert Family may your memories bring you comfort

Nia - AZ by way of MN   June 17th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

He'd better…the only person to hold him (Bush) to task on issues, unlike the spinless Dems who chose not to impeach him. Now if we could only get the Pres. do hit up flood sites to help bagg up sand like Obama did yesterday.

Obama all the way...   June 17th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Tim Russert,

You will be sorely missed. I felt as if I knew you, even though we had never met. You made politics fun and understandable.

You were are great man, a great father and a great son and a top notch journalist.

I watched your son on the Today Show yesterday. He is a wonderful young man, and I know you are looking down, smiling on him. You should be so proud of him.

That picture of him in the dark on the MTP set, touching your chair and looking as if you were still sitting their, will be forever ingrained in my mind like little John Jr. saluting his father, JFK during his funeral.

God Bless you and your family.

proud army and navy mom   June 17th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

tim russert was indeed a fine, honest man.

i tried never to miss his show because I depended on hearing just the facts. it's true that you really don't fully appreciate someone until they are gone.

Tim, I can't feel sad because a know you are in a better place. put a good word in for us left behind.

We will all miss Tim Russert!

President Bush presents himself well these days. Of course, Laura Bush always has.

Republicans began looking better ever since the extreme left-wing Democrats began to push their extreme left-wing man.

But, Tim Russert remained above political manipulation. :)

Dolald Nick   June 17th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

What a man if I must say it myself. Tim would never have worked for FOX(FIX) News. Tim was the real deal.

While they are at it, maybe they could consider paying a liitle repsect to the rest of the country. Well, at least Tim gets their respect , and he deserves it.

Independent   June 17th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

My deepest condolences to Tim's wife, son, and father. But know that your loss is, quite truly, not bigger than ours. Where will the American people go for truth, now? The media is filled with cheerleaders and activists — but no journalists; no one with the backbone that Tim had.

God help us all.

Faith Pa   June 17th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Tim Russert was one of those people who are unique in that they are honest, humble and destined for greatness. I am sure he will continue that path in heaven. He will be missed but not forgotten here on earth. RIP God Bless

He would be very proud and humbled to have the President of this great country he so loved give him this honor and respect. Thank you to the President and First Lady for doing so.

Ula Nejad- Sacramento Ca   June 17th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

He truly was one of a kind. And to hear his son on TV talk about his father shows what Tim was able to give back to society which is QUALITY.

Mercedes   June 17th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

To the Russert family,

Please receive from the Rodriguez/Montero family in Miami, our most deepest condolence. Tim Russert will always be in our thoughts. He brought to my home so much knowledge. I must say that my children both whom just finished 1st and 4th grade were very much political educated through what they heard every time he came on the air. I remember my 9 year old's teacher telling me that he knew more than others his age. For this and for bringing me to love and respect more my parents and elders and for my beloved New York City. Thank you so much you have no idea how much this lose has affected my family.

Goodbye Gentle Giant. Gone but not forgotten. Always that Irish smile that searched the truth demanded it in ever so gentle a way…..truth from those who hide behind political gain, truth from those in power, truth from those who are no matter how we measure them…just beings like the rest of us…but who represent us…and should stand on truth.

Thank you Tim Russert for being the yardstick of accountability, whenever you were able to get the measurements that is….and you never left a rock unturned if you had the strength to move it.

Thank you for being one person we can trust in this unsavory world of ours…Thank you for being kind, and open, and respectful, and honest. Thank you for being a role model for all of us.

We shall miss you and shall never see the likes of you again.
God bless your family….your wonderful example of reality, your dad, your awesome son Luke and your beloved wife.

Gone but not forgotten. Tim Russert.

Rest in Peace now Tim

Why don't you pay respect to the families of the troops, and bring home150,000 of their loved ones?

Over 4,000 soldiers have died at your hands. Were have been when it comes to paying respects ffor them?

(No disrespect intened for Tim.)

Dave Froyalde/Washington   June 17th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

Although I don't agree with Tim Russerts politics, I admire the guy for for his honesty in expressing his opinion. Unlike other people in the media, he do does not sugar coat his statements on this or that issues. Very rare in this time and age. My condolence to the family. My Sundays will no longer be the same from this day on.

Its sad what we are left with now in journalism (sean hannity, bill o'reily—–>pathetic)

When you're finished there Bush why not pay a visit to the midwest where so many have lost their homes in the floods. Let's see if you've learned anything from Katrina other than going for a photo op.

We're going to miss you, and the great work you did on Meet the Press. May you look down from heaven and smile at the tribute to you by so many Americans.

We hope to see your son follow in your footsteps.

Tim Russert was a great guy, no question about it. I think all Americans can agree on that subject.

I hate that I didn't tape MTP this past Sunday. I hope they will replay it.

Bruce Wexler   June 17th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

NBC will have a terrible problem trying to replace Russert. The American people though, have a bigger problem. They must find the truth without Tim leading the charge.
We mourn our loss.

To the Russert family, I am one of millions that watched your husband, and dad, each Sunday on MEET THE PRESS. I think a lot of Tom Brokaw, and Brian Williams, and I enjoy watching Wolf Blitzer. But, Tim wrote the book on journalism.!!! He was the Michael Jordon of his skill. My wife Tracy and myself send our condolences.

I don't think Brit Hume would be a good replacement for Tim Russert. I think it should be someone who's views of politics are not known. Brit is clearly a Republican.

I think whoever they get should have the same temperament as Tim, and that's going to be hard to find. Maybe his friend Mike somebody.

Ralph   June 17th, 2008 3:08 pm ET
