(CNN) - Cindy McCain, wife of John McCain, said Thursday the spouses of the presidential candidates should be allowed to have some privacy.

"I do not think that spouses and family members ... are fair game," she told CNN's John King.

"There has to be some decorum left in politics and in American journalism as well. Our husbands are the candidates," she said.

You notice she slammed Michelle before making this statement very convenient.

Generation X   June 19th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

may be cindy you can start living by your words. Now spouses are off limits but it does not stop you from critisizing michelle. you should not be talking about others Cindy, when you have a colorful past.

Sante   June 19th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

GIVE ME A BRAKE!

THE "CHANGE "IN AMERICA WILL BE : TO ACCEPT AN INEXPERIENCED , AGGRESSIVE ,EAGER TO GET PEOPLE /OBAMAS/ AND TEACH THEM HOW TO BE A PRESIDENT AND A FIRST LADY!

BOY, JUST BECAUSE WE WANT THE WORLD TO SAY: SEE AMERICA WENT SOO FAR!!???

MY QUESTION IS: WHO IS GOING TO PAY FOR THESE "EXOTICS"?

MRS.McCAIN GO GET THEM!

Shelly in IL   June 19th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

But she (Cindy) can comment on Michelle's (proud to be an american for the 1st time) comment. What a hypocrit!

As long as it's not about you and your family, huh Cindy?

miko Kansas city   June 19th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

O really! After you yourself went after her and spinned her words to make yourself look better?? You are PROUD of SLAVERY!! A war that we should have not entered!! The civilians in iraq that were killed!! the republican party that continues to oppress the already oppressed!! Yes you don't want your dirty laundry to continuely be aired in the way that you all attack Michelle. You are a HYPOCRITE!!

Cindy McCain like Husband...Delusional   June 19th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

If wives are not fair game then why in the world is she harping down Michelle Obama about her comments?

Margi   June 19th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

It just occured to Cindy that it might not be a good idea to slam Michelle with all the skeletons she has in her own closet.

Rhonda   June 19th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Michelle looked gorgeous yesterday on the "View". She could be a model. I wil be so proud to have her as my first lady, and I can't wait to vote for her husband.

Tired of W, OH   June 19th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Wow. The hypocracy is staggering...

It' like she's using the old "no-touch-back" rule of tag. She whacks Michelle over the "proud" comment again, then says that they're off-limits.

She's just as senile as her husband. The botox just hides hers better.

Justin   June 19th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

She's exactly right.

McCain 08   June 19th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

we dont need Hillary or her screaming women to win this election.

McCain 08

obamagirlinbama   June 19th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Of course she wants families to be off limits now because the hammer is about to come down and the lights will be shining brightly on her drug problem. Let's not forget they don't want people to know what John McCain really thinks of her...maybe c_ _ _ is his pet name for her.

Tori   June 19th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

David from Silver Spring....I agree with you 110%. Cindy McCain doesn't want to press to get going on her.

Shirley, Silicon Valley, California   June 19th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Cindy McCain got her TEETH MARKon Michelle Obama's proud remark. Cindy is the cheer leader of viciousness attack club.

Cindy FUELS THE FIRE and FANS THE FLAME of the attack on her husband's opponent.

Alexandra   June 19th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Oh shush you hypocrite!
You just slimmed Michelle yesterday, and now you are flip flopping like you husband McBush.
I guess it runs in the McBush family to talk out of both sides of their mouths...
Go learn how to create an original cookie receipe for once and leave us alone
Obama/Clinton '08
Crush McBush!!

Bill from ALabama   June 19th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

I think that wives should be examined carefully, due to their influence over the candidate, and their in-put in to entertaining Whitehouse guests. Children ,however should be left alone! -let them have as normal a life as possible.

GB   June 19th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Wrong Cindy. Hold onto your hat along with Michelle. Bill Clinton took a beating in the nomination process and so did Hillary.

Bishop   June 19th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

I don't believe her when she says that she wasn't trying to start something with HER "proud" statement. She tried to get her hits in too. I don't trust her. She said no to showing her tax statement. When the pressure was on and EVERYONE else showed their cards she said: oh, I didn't know it was that important...

That's right Cindy, defend Ms. Obama like you SHOULD....

Brian   June 19th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Wrong, Cindy. When your husband runs for the highest office in the land, your whole life's story is an open book whether you like it or not. And lose the double standard – you were making snips at Michelle Obama the other day.

Got Game Cindy?   June 19th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Too late, you already attacked Michelle, so now you are fair game. Bring it on Barbie, we're ready for you.

Kenneth M   June 19th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

NO WONDER SHE IS PROUD OF HER COUNTRY. SHE GETS TO USE DRUGS, SLEEP WITH MARRIED MEN, FLY AROUND ON HER CORPERATE BROOM, GET HIGH ON BOTOX. WHAT A COUNTRY.

Ms. D   June 19th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

It's not fair game to the Mccain's because they are the ones who have something to hide. The Obama's have no problem addressing issues!! And having to release some tax returns is no attack Mrs. Mccain because all the candidates had to do it. The personally attacked Mrs. Obama and they have never done that to Mrs. Mccain.

emanga   June 19th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

she's only saying this b/c all the focus is on Michelle ...its pathetic really when everyone was bashing Michelle she was all for it...but now that Michelle is on the cover of magazines and co-hosting the view... now she wants to start protecting 1st ladies... oh Cindy

double standard   June 19th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

I guess that should apply to EVERYone EXCEPT the Clintons.

The Clintons are fair game–every single one of them can get slammed and attacked in vile and ugly ways- and that is acceptable.

But....oh... don't dare to mention any other family members of any other candidate.

susants   June 19th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

Well, then Cindy, live by your words: stop slagging off Michelle Obama and misinterpreting what she says.
Or is this latest comment like the cookie recipes?

bernadette   June 19th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

if Mrs McCain thinks spouses should be off limits – why is she continuing to go after Mrs Obama?

TESAP   June 19th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

I think the wives should be left out of it..... especially in Cindy's case.

BARACK THE VOTE PEOPLE................... :)

Angus McDugan   June 19th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

The Cindy needs to not say anything to the press or campaign for her husband. Otherwise she is fair game. Just like Chelsea should have been fair game.

Buster, MA   June 19th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

You Barbie Doll, understand this, if you attack Michelle, we will attack you. So everytime your doe-eyed face is on the screen you are fair game.

Michelle is just as American as you are, and even more so because she actually works for a living. Why don't you go shopping or whatever rich people do, just leave Michelle alone.

Chut Pata   June 19th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

If it ain't fair game, why did you start it by questioning Michelle's patriotism?

As for Obama's campaing, all they did was ask you to declare your taxes like Bill Clinton did. After all you share the expenses (especially your jet plane for campaigning). Bill Clinton did not say he should be off limits.

Cynthia   June 19th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

I agree that they should be off limits. But, it looks like Cindy opened the gates herself.

Il voter   June 19th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

well you are the one who started it. Welcome to the game.

Vote Nader   June 19th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Why do the two corporate controlled parties always say one thing and do another? Both campaigns are guilty, and to suggest otherwise shows one's ignorance. Don't be blinded, there is a way out.

Tjstelten   June 19th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Cindy McCain is two-faced! She said once again to attack Michelle that SHE was proud of her country as thou to imply Michelle is not. I have lost all respect for the plastic Barbie Doll she is!!!!!

Jonathan   June 19th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Please! Now that the Fembot wife of McCain is in the hot seat we shouldn't question what "family" of the candidate stands for? The Party that is all about family. Rich, White, hetero chrsitian families only! What Ever.

Hypathia Lee   June 19th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Hey Cindi ... are you proud of how we served our citizens in Katrina?

OBAMA SUPPORTER IN IOWA   June 19th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Independent woman-4-Obama.

I so agree with your comment repeated below. You and I are on the same page.

AMEN! Cindy McCain AND Michelle Obama need to be left ALONE. PLEASE PEOPLE LET'S BE CIVIL……… FOR ONCE!

Aren't we all sick and tired of the "gotcha-politics"? Let's concentrate on the IMPORTANT AND CRUCIAL issues we are facing!

Obama Fan   June 19th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Sounds like she's hiding something...

Neil K, Lake Forest CA   June 19th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

I'm an Obama supporter, and I agree with both Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain on this. However, if John McCain can't convince his own party to back off of using Mrs. Obama as "fair game", what does it say about his ability to get people to follow his lead? That's also a fair question to ask about Barack Obama, but it seems that most of the fire concerning the spouses is coming from the Republican side and the conservative talk show wing of that party.

Not So Delusional   June 19th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

Cindy: i have to agree with you. I still want to know what you pulled in last year though. I don't care where it came from (as long as it's legal). But I just want to know how much bank you really are worth.

Oh and P.S. If you don't have any problem with it, i'd really like to date your daughter. I'm a hard working Republican vet. But here's the catch, i'm black and voting for Obama. If you can look past that, let me know. I'll make you proud..

Theresa in Minneapolis   June 19th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

Then perhaps the hypocrite should stop talking smack about Michelle!

Jacob   June 19th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

So why was she attacking Michelle yesterday?

Jim   June 19th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

I'm kinda surprised her past hasn't been brought up and everything is about Michelle Obama, are the Dem's saving it for the last few month's?

Jeff D, South Bend, IN   June 19th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

Of course you say it's not fair game, because you don't want people digging into your own drug addiction problems, or that you stole drugs from your own charitable foundation to feed you habit, and then skated on cimmunity service instead of going to jail.

Imagine if Michelle Obama had a drug problem and stole drugs from a charity giving medicine to third world countries. There would be no end to that news cycle.

lil   June 19th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

She can attack michelle but no one can attack her. Sound like a double standard to me.

Independent LAWYER for Obama   June 19th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

LOL – after she again brought up the Michelle Obama "proud" comments! That is some pretty funny stuff.

unions are not stupid   June 19th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

Well duh!!!! we agree on that for the most part but your the one slinging trash at Sen Obama's wife not once but yet again today you did it! This women need to find a hole and crawl in it she is a picture of everything wrong with America. Plastic fake elitist! go get some more botox will help you keep smiling after your husband cheats on you too

Russ, Albuquerque   June 19th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

How does this square with the rip she made on Michelle Obama? Guess the rich are used to having their cake and eating it too!

Linda31   June 19th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

Isn't that double speak? When you attacked Michelle Obama about being really proud.

Could it be that you are scared that the DEA charges will resurface?

Loretta from California   June 19th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

Why the change? Afraid the media will go after you next? I've been waiting for that for some time now.

Yes.We.Can.   June 19th, 2008 2:33 pm ET

and that whole wording "Our husbands are the candidates’" is against everything Hillary did, isn’t it ? Sounds so backward.

Independent-woman-4-Obama   June 19th, 2008 2:33 pm ET

AMEN! Cindy McCain AND Michelle Obama need to be left ALONE. PLEASE PEOPLE LET'S BE CIVIL......... FOR ONCE!

Aren't we all sick and tired of the "gotcha-politics"? Let's concentrate on the IMPORTANT AND CRUCIAL issues we are facing!

Chanda-Cincinnati Ohio   June 19th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

Is anyone surprised that SHE would take this stance. No one wants to call out her drug use, prescription pill stealing, but everyone wants to put Michelle under a microscope for any thing she does. As far as those people still talking about the "for the first time I am proud..." First of all she says really proud, second of all if you listen to the entire speech she is talking about the political process IN this country. Not because her husband was running as a candidate, but becasue people were actualy getting involved and engaed in the process!!!

Jim   June 19th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

Well said, I agree. I am an Obama supporter but I fully agree with this, you can't base someone on everyone else, that's just not right, we all disagree, it's human, judge people by their own actions.

Joe   June 19th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

I wonder if the RNC is listening. If the spouse of the party leader says families are not fair game, and they continue to attack Mrs. Obama on personal issues, them what does that say about the Republican party?

David, Silver Spring, MD   June 19th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

By which she means that she can make derogatory remarks about Michelle Obama, but any questions about her personal wealth, prior drug use, or her affair with John McCain during his first marriage are all off-limits.

ALLBAMALLTHETIME   June 19th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

Oh SHUSH! When you made the comment directed at landing blow to Michelle Obama–apparently you thought that she was fair game then. So, I implore you–where was YOUR decorum then? Exactly as I thought. Hypocrisy at its finest...Botox to teh rescue.

RANDY   June 19th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

wow….new poll from Florida….Obama up by 8 points….see rasmusen poll…generally ranked in the top 3 polling firms. It's for real!!!!!

Its happening!!!!! Bye Bye Mccaine!!

woops….my bad….its Mccaine up by 8! How come CNN doesn't have that poll plastered all overplace like the "Quinnipiac" ones from yesterday?

Gerry   June 19th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Of course this is after she slams Michelle Obama again. Looks like she's as much of a flip flopper as John. Runs in the family I guess.

Yes.We.Can.   June 19th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Then why are you attacking Michelle?
