Watch a clip of John King's interview with Cindy McCain.

(CNN) — As the presidential campaigns of John McCain and Barack Obama tangle over which is unfairly dragging the prospective first ladies into the general election battle, Cindy McCain sent a signal this morning that she’s not about to step out of the fray.

The wife of presumptive Republican nominee John McCain stood behind her initial response to Democratic counterpart Michelle Obama’s comment that for the first time she was “really proud” of her country. She told CNN’s John King that her own remark – that she had “always” been proud of her country – had been a spontaneous response, not a planned attack.

“I’m an emotional woman when it comes to service to our country. I’ve watched many people’s children leave and go serve,” she said. “This is something that is the fiber of the McCain family. It was nothing more than me just saying, look, I believe in this country so strongly.”

“I think [Obama is] a fine woman and a good mother” but that both women were just “in an interesting line of work right now.”

Watch King’s full interview on The Situation Room at 4 p.m. ET

She repeated her defense of her initial reaction in an interview that aired on ABC News Thursday. "I don't know why [Obama] said what she said,” said McCain. “All I know is that I have always been proud of my country."

McCain is in Vietnam, where her husband spent more than five years as a prisoner of war, on a humanitarian mission.

Several days ago, first lady Laura Bush defended Obama, telling an interviewer that she believed her original remark by the wife of presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama had been misinterpreted as unpatriotic. On Thursday, Obama senior adviser David Axelrod told CNN that Cindy McCain’s response had not cleared up matters from the campaign’s perspective.

“Well, I didn't hear an explanation,” Axelrod told CNN’s John Roberts in an interview on American Morning. “She just said that the McCain family feels strongly about America. And I think the Obama family does as well. I think most Americans do.”

Cindy McCain! Don't make me gag!! She knows darn well what Michelle said and meant, we all do~ Ms. McCain, the one who is the other woman, to a man who left his wife who was disfigured in a car crash, because she didn't have any momey to sustain his political ambitions, she loves this country so much, she steals drugs from a charity to help its poor, to feed her self-righteous drug habit!! Oh yeah she even steals cookie recipes!! Ha Ha! Ha!….Cindy!!!? She wouldn't know what it means to be a true American , she never had to struggle in life like a true one……So who is the Fake one here??

Wow   June 19th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Pam,

Your quote is wrong. Michelle said "really proud". That makes a difference unless you are a hatemonger who can't handle the truth.

Tanya, GA   June 19th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

To Pam from Florida:

If you're going to quote someone, you should do so accurately. The actual quote is as follows "….for the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country…"

As people like you already know (because it's what you're doing), you can remove one word from a quote and turn it into something totally different from what it was intended to be.

silas   June 19th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

ridiculous, and this is a news to me ? even barbara bush understood what she meant .

Shasta   June 19th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Pam- I don't know how many times this has to be said, but I'll try again. Michelle did not say "for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country," she said that for the first time she was "really proud." One word, yes, but it makes a world of difference. Get over it.

Linda31   June 19th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

FIrst of all, Michelle Obama has ALWAYS been proud of her country. She said she is really proud now or like Laura Bush said, more proud. She did not say she was not proud of her country. So take the wax out of your ears. Also Obama was talking about the political process & how engaged people were.

Cindy McCain should think twice about trying to throw stones, especially unwarranted ones. Was she so proud of her country because she was able to avoid jail time for STEALING drugs from her own charity?

Stop the lies!   June 19th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Why would anyone interpret McCain's comments as a dig on Mrs. Obama? please!!!! Of course she was trying to highlight some alleged difference between she and Michelle Obama on patriotism. Funny how she's quick to mention her emotions about our country but no comment on how she was cheating with John McCain while he was very much married!!!! Oh, those are just the little details….

John   June 19th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

Just because she has money doesn't mean she is a bad person. Heck, the Obama's have PLENTY of money. Go Cindy! Go Cindy! We all know who the REAL two-faced unpatriotic liar is.

tito valentino   June 19th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

She should be ashamed of herself. Instead of visting places displaced by flood in the United States, her first agenda is to run to Vietnam. misplaced priorities. Charity begins at home. Mccain's agenda has always been other countries first before the United States all in the name of wanting to seem that they have a lot of foreign policy experience.

Skott   June 19th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

Cindy McCain has proven that she is just as willing to get in the mud with other mean-spirited Republicans. Spontaneous?! What a liar. She is taking her talking points from her husbands angry campaign. Go take your multi-millions and put it toward something useful for the poor, disenfranchised, abused or homeless if you want to prove you love this country. Otherwise, your words remain just hollow Republican smear points.

Bradley In Colorado   June 19th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

You're a fine woman, Cindy. If only your idiot husband could be so tolerant…

Letha, SD   June 19th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

Good for her. She should never back down. The messiah and his wife are public enough in their comments and criticisms.

she can not back down on michelle, she won't be able to go home at night, she appears to be afraid of old mac. cindy does what she told to do nothing more, mac gave her permission to be on the attack, and not to let up or else. don't forget mac was a ( WAS A POW FOR 5 YEARS, YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT GOES ON BEHIND CLOSE DOORS.

Susan Cusson, Mohave Valley, Arizona 86440   June 19th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

Maybe someone should get their hands on Michelle Obama's Princeton Thesis as I have. Read it!!!! It speaks for itself. I went to college twice and never thought it necessary to write about racism. It was always a non-issue for me. I never saw color. I don't measure people by the color of their skin. Michelle, get over it. It is old news in a progressiv world. I vote McCain. We will be proud and safe!!!!!

Jonathan G   June 19th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

Wow, is this really all she has to attack with… this topic has been worn out. The statement was taken out of context anyway. Claw as hard as you can McCains… money wont buy this election!! :)

Rudy NYC   June 19th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

I believe that McCain has been quoted by Tim Russert as saying that he didn't truly discover his American sense of pride until he was a POW.

Somehow I got the impression that Michelle Obama was expressing a similar sentiment. After listening to Cindy's sage advice to Michelle on how to be a politicians spouse, this denial of an attack rings a little hollow. The statement itself was the standard company line these days.

spinners   June 19th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Obama and his wife are both manipulative frauds that keep re-tooling their words to perfect their message- depending on who the audience is.

And the media keeps spinning for them. Refusing to be critical of the Obamas in any way.

We are losing our free press and our democracy.

Phil Newton, Murphy OR   June 19th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Hmmm.

But she didn't pilfer downers from her own charity.

Now, did she?

aware   June 19th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Go Cindy! :)

Give it up Axelrod! You are part of the reason that I will never vote for Obama. :(

Cindy has much higher positive ratings than Michelle and a fix the Michelle image will not help.

Remember the Kerry spouse problem!

Mike   June 19th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

This woman fakes receipes. She's not strong enough to withstand pain. She is pathetic!!

Slick Hilly   June 19th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Do we really need another Stepford Wife in the White House? I shouldn't say that. Laura is starting to show some personality.

Actually, Cindy looks more like a Praying Mantis.

Jim   June 19th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Michelle Obama needs to take pattern off of Cindy McCain and become involved in charity work. I think that is where her time, money and efforts would be best spent.

Pam Corbino   June 19th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Michelle Obama is responsible for any words that she speaks. When she said that "for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country," she shouldn't later be believed when she says that what Ishe "clearly" meant was something else . . . the public hears what she says, period, and she was very clear in her initial statement as to how she feels about America.

Pam from Florida

Adam Habib   June 19th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

To Ryan,

So you came to conclusion that Mitchell is a hater? Huh! Obama is half white and half black. I guess she hates whites, not hafl whites. Get over Hillary. Go vote for McCain and you will end up with another Scalia.

mixed messages from Obama   June 19th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

The Obamas are just lying hypocrits.

Notice how they want to appeal to Muslims and yet do not want people to see that Muslims support Obama- that is why they removed the 2 Muslim women from view behind Obama.

At the same time, Obama repeats that he is a Christian. Why does he keep pressing that point? Don't we have freedom of religion? What is wrong with being a Muslim?

Obama wants to be all things to all people and keeps getting caught in his own trap of hypocrisy.

What is the UNITY of which he speaks? It does not apply to HRC supporters, or white blue collar white men, or Jews, or Muslims.

So what IS HIS MESSAGE?

Nia - AZ by way of MN   June 19th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

I think Mr McCain might want to tap her on the shoulder and let her know that he agreed with Obama that family was off limits. hopefully it will stop here. It would be a shame for her to be attack for her indescretions with pain killers

I think the Michelle Obama comment was a poor choice of words by Michelle and I am sure if she could take the comments back she would.

Mr Fix it (Sanford Florida)   June 19th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

I think there should be a debate of spouses on issues.
Does someone really think Cindy would be a better VP than Michelle if a president could should his / her spouse to be the VP?

Really I dare someone to set up a Spouses debate nationally televised.

Tom   June 19th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

Hay Ryan, care to back up your slander againts Michelle Obama, and to offer proof of her being "white hating"?

Can we unite please!   June 19th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

Then we wonder why Obama is leading.

MD   June 19th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

Cindy McCane should be "proud" of this country. Growing up in a rich family, having everything she ever wanted, are good enough reasons for her to be "proud."

She is an elitist woman who tries to play down her rich background by making stupid comments like "I'm just a woman from Arizona." That is such an insult to Arizonians. She says that as if Arizona is a dump.

The pettier Repubs become, the more people flock to Obama. They should look and see what happened to Clinton when she tried to attack Obama's character.

Adam Habib   June 19th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Cindy McCain's found an opening and took a swing at Mitchell Obama. Well, its Okay. I do not blame her for that because she mentioned that she was a very emotional woman. However, she should be careful, democrates can unleash quite a few things about her which are not so nice. It is time for spouse not to take a punch at each others and let the candidates play.

Student for OBAMA 08!!!   June 19th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

And another thing to be proud of. Because of this election with Obama and Hillary for the first time on television I see people that look like me. Never before have cable news channels had so much diversity. Cindy McCain should get a clue. The comments were not that big of a deal. Laura Bush got it.

skunkrat The Marine   June 19th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

I love this woman for her integrity! I think Cindy McCain would make a beautiful first lady!

Farrell, Houston, Tx   June 19th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Cindy needs to tell the truth about her drug addiction. She said when her mother found out she was using she quit, NOT TRUE. FACT: Her picture was posted all over the Arizona newspaper in front of the charity she stole drugs from, now was that before her mother found out or when her mother found out along with the rest of Arizona citizens. TELL THE TRUTH CINDY AND DON'T HIDE BEHIND MICHELLE OBAMA.

Flor   June 19th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Cindy McCain has nothing to retract or explain. She just reinstated how proud she is of her Country all the time.

After I have heard Michelle Obama’s comments, it is clear that she starts being proud of this wonderful Country when her husband begun to run for president. Shame on her; she owes everything she is and has to this Country!

RYAN   June 19th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

I think Cindy McCain should worry about her old wishy washy husband, one who loses his attention in every speech except someone whispers in his ear. Over 50 million people voted for dumb Bush and what did they get— stupidity. Cindy should focus on her drug addiction recovery, stealing of recipe, and illegal business deal in Danfur.
Cindy! Americans 're not stupid as you and McDumb think– we know who you 're?

I do not want to start attacking Mrs. McCain but perhap she should listen to the comment again. Mrs. Obama said "really" proud as oppose to the interpretation of "for the first time in my life I am proud…." There is a definite difference in the statements.

39 YR OLD WHITE WOMAN IN SEATTLE   June 19th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

I guess she should be proud of her country!!!LOL

Really...what is the difference   June 19th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

Why does the media choose to spin all things Obama in a positive light?

Do they seriously think Obama is a Messiah? Are they afraid of appearing racist?

The media doesn't do the same for anyone else.

The media was brutal to HRC- hideously vile and biased in its criticism.

They are not hateful toward the McCains…. but they are not gushing all over themselves with praises and justifications and excuses, the way they do with the Obamas.

JAY CHICAGO   June 19th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

What about the humanitarian needs of your fellow Americans Cindy McCain? People all along the Mississippi River are being ravaged by floods and you're thousands of miles away! A person genuinely PROUD of her country would be IN her country helping the needs of fellow Americans being displaced by natural disasters. I suppose Cindy McCain's eating cake in sunny Vietnam, while thousands of Americans are struggling to save their homes from the floods.

Lucy in Chicago, Illinois   June 19th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

This is the only statment that Mrs. McCain knows how to make. Did she go to college?

David in Illinois   June 19th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

No to Mr. AND Mrs. McCain. They're poison for this country. We need healing and forward-looking policies and action, not another 4 years of nastiness, war, and economic incompetence. Please go back to the sidelines Mrs. McCain.

Cooper   June 19th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

"I believe in my country so strongly." Of course, where else could power and money keep you for doing jail time for using your non-profit to steal drugs. At the same time , McCain was pushing for more punishment for drug-related crimes. I guess he saw his wife as an exception. How un-American. Cindy McCain is such a fraud.

JC from NJ   June 19th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Michelle said it all very clearly and it is her problem. Can she go back in time and furnish some proof that she had been proud of America before.

Cynthia   June 19th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

Cindy McCain doesn't have room to talk. Some of the things that are known about her are not very American. I would rather have a 1st lady whose words were misinterperated than one who has done things that are questionable.

39 YR OLD WHITE WOMAN IN SEATTLE   June 19th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

I am so sure that she has seen many people leave to go an serve thier country..she has also seen a man come back from serving his country and leave his wife and children for her. She is a fake as they come.

She comes from a background of money and believes in getting her way at any cost and hurting anyone (that is proven by her privious actions)

I want someone in the White House with family values that Americans can look up to not someone that would leave his wife and kids for a younger woman ( that uses all her money to try to stay that way)

Yes he was a POW (granted) what else. He is ok with our men and women dieing in a foreign country for another 50 to 100 years. He has know idea about the economy. His wife has money (boat loads) so he will never really worry about gas prices or losing his home or job!! so what does he have in comon with the American Public? How will he do things to better our lives if he will never understand our lives. Proud of our country I think not as the rest of the world has no respect for us and we are no longer this super power because we have not aillies thanks to GWB and we want to continue this with McCain!!!! (WHY!!)

Jonathan   June 19th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

GOP can you please get together and have this woman be quiet? She needs to stay away from the limelight. A normal person can never find anything in common with this one. She travels the globe looking for kids to adopt and for communities to help but fails to go to American commmunities. Take a look at Downtown Miami, I see many people who need help. Instead this one is off to Vietnam for whatever reason. We are going to lose this election with her. At least Laura worked as a librarian.

JWB   June 19th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

I'm happy that Mrs. Obama has refused to comment on Cindy's complicity in McCain's adultery and former drug addiction. Too bad the press who is willing to continue to publish Mrs. Obama's comment is not willing to discuss the second Mrs. McCain's drug abuse and relationship with a married man.

Personally I prefer the woman who is really proud of her country as first lady lady.

The Obama campaign really should go against it's instincts and stay out of this one. Just let the media and who ever else go after her. Stay out of the fray. If you shoot back, it will come back to haunt you. Let the McCains look petty on this one.

What if?   June 19th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

AFTER FINDING OUT ABOUT THE WAY CINDY MCCAIN BECAME JOHN MCCAIN WIFE. AS WIVES, WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT MAKES CINDY THINKS SHE"S HAS THE RIGHT TO SAY ANYTHING ABOUT MICHELLE OBAMA OR ANY OTHER WOMAN……………………….

McCain, upon returning from Vietnam had numerous affairs during his marriage to his first wife (who was disfigured in a car accident on Christmas Eve while McCain was staying at the Hanoi Hilton), before setting his sights on the current Mrs. McCain who was younger, prettier, and richer than his current wife at the time. He then divorced his wife and the mother of his children for Cindy, whom he married one month after his divorce was finalized. Cindy thought nothing of messing around with a married father of three.

So fake like her husband. It's ironic she does not support the war, but her husband does. And to all the Hillary supporters.

This is copied, because its great words !ENJOY!
10 Things Hillary Needs To Tell Her Supporters:

1. I accept that I LOST fair and square.
2. The nomination was NOT STOLEN from me.
3. I did NOT WIN the popular vote based on the rules.
4. The DNC did not "select" Obama. Obama had more pledged delegates and the popular vote, so the DNC went with the will of the people.
5. Neither I nor Obama had enough pledged delegates to win the nomination, so we BOTH NEEDED superdelegates to put one of us over the top. In fact, in order for me to have won, I needed twice as many superdelegates as Obama.
6. Obama ran a superior campaign to mine.
7. The better candidate won.
8. Anyone who votes for McCain despite the fact that he is against everything I stand for is no supporter of mine.
9. Anyone who votes against Obama because he is black is no supporter of mine.
10. Barack Obama will be the next POTUS.

Pablo   June 19th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

'ALWAYS proud of her country?'…Even the last 7 years? Even when the Bush machine took on the McCains in 2000? Very interesting.

for the first time   June 19th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

I still feel that Obama is not a legitimate nominee- he won by cheating and with the help of a biased media and a DNC that deliberately knocked HRC out of the race to advantage him. To me, that will always amount to a fixed - for - Obama primary.

So…For the first time in my adult life, I am ashamed to be a democrat.

OR For the first time in my adult life, I am REALLY ashamed to be a democrat.

Really… what is the difference between those 2 statements? You Obama supporters are just as full of it as he and Michelle are.

Michelle Obama said what she said and really meant what she said.

No matter what type of political spin Obama's campaign puts on this… Michelle Obama said exactly what she meant… or what she's been hearing for 20 years at church.

It's not about a misstatement of words. Everyone mixes up their words now and then.

But when she makes statements - very similar to those she's been hearing every week in church for the last 20 years - you have to start to wonder how much that has influenced her and her husband's views.

Eric   June 19th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

This Stepford wife is as dumb as she looks. Old little rich girl who dresses like a 25 year old and thinks she can give us lessons in patriotism. She should stick to baking her Betty Croker cookies.

Margi   June 19th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

It is really not a good idea for Cindy McCain to critize Michelle Obama and then expect a cakewalk herself.

Kerri   June 19th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Is she equally as proud of her drug addiction?

cevans, tx   June 19th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Of course Cindy McCain always been proud of America. After all, she's benefited the most. Has she ever been denied anything because of the color of her skin? Has she ever been belittled because of the color of her skin? NOT!!! If you haven't walked in the shoes, how in the HELL can you know exactly where Michelle Obama is coming from.

I can stand hypocrites who see and hear what they want to. It is what it is…And, furthermore why is she still on the subject anyway…

For the first time in my 50+ years of being an American citizen, I too am becoming proud of this country!!

cheryl   June 19th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

WOW! Who cares what this woman says about Michelle, she should worry about explaining how proud she was to still John McCain from his injured 1st wife. How about that Cindy?

Shoe Sale   June 19th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

Hey Miss Cindy, I hear there's a shoe sale at Neiman Marcus. Why don't you go shopping, and leave politics to Americans who actually have to deal with real life issues, like gas prices.

Eric   June 19th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

This woman, who stole drugs from a charity organisation to sustain her drug addiction, who broke a marriage and commited adultery, who always manages to look like a cheap "forgotten in the sandbox" barbie doll, should stick to do what she does best. Look like an empty entity beside her husband.

dukeboards   June 19th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

Cindy McCain really should be careful. She has way too many skeletons in her closet to be criticizing Michelle Obama. Drug addiction, forging prescriptions, using her charity to obtain drugs, stealing another woman's husband and using her money to buy the first wife off.

"McCain is in Vietnam, where her husband spent more than five years as a prisoner of war, on a humanitarian mission."

He wasn't Cindy's husband then. McCain's wife at the time was faithfully waiting for him at home. Until she was disfigured in a terrible car wreck. Then he dumped her for a woman 18 years younger than him.

voter   June 19th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

I thought McCain said spouses were off limits. I guess this is another flip flop moment from the McCain camp or she did not receive the message. Get a grip cindy because you don't want the democrats to discuss your colorful past.

ALLBAMALLTHETIME   June 19th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Cindy is a LIAR–she knew what she meant when she said it. She is not woman enough to stand her ground. What a mealy-mouthed disappointment.

Voter turned 4 Obama   June 19th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

To the Hillary backers, or shall I say them Log Cabin Repugs. Gov.Sebelius and others have a better shot then Hillary. Sorry wake up, you'll are dreaming. This country have done the Clinton's and Bush's it time for a change a real change. And for the once that having problem with the gas price. The gas will drop very low when Bush is out of the White House. If you listen to what other country are saying about the problem and it not the Americans people it the Bush and McSane policy. The Kings in the Middle East told Bush to got to hell. And you can tell how other country think about the next guy, and if you look and listen stop being blind to the fact. That person isn't McSane. Look he can't remember what he said yesterday, is he C-Nile for real and his wife just have the sticky fingers. And I'm sorry but someone need to ask Cindy to take an drug test to make sure that she is off the drugs. Because the saying goes like this. Once and Crack Head Always an Crack Head!!!!!!!!!

Turnabout is Fair Play   June 19th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Whatever Mrs. Druggy McVein..if you keep pushing, you're going to get pushed back and hard too. I REALLY don't think you want to get caught up in a fight against Mrs. Obama, she will row your head into the ground with an excellent comeback. You HAVE been warned.

ps   June 19th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Cindy McCain did explain that she had an emotional reaction and said what came to her mind. Remember that at that time her son was serving in Iraq.

David Axelrod is just doing old politics by trying to attack Cindy McCain and trying to drive up sympathy for Michelle Obama.

Patrick Henry, Fort Myers   June 19th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Cindy–chill.
It took her 20 years to realize her pastor was a racist, bigoted, hate mongerer.

Even with the cadre of highly paid consultants the DNC is writing the check for to "brush her up on political savvy" it would probably take her at least 1/4 of that time to graduate from the Dean et al Finishing School.

Relax.

Theresa in Minneapolis   June 19th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

I find it funny that Cindy wants to put Michelle in a bad light. Or to make herself appear to be "the better woman".

Cindy has skeletons and is VERY lucky that the Obama's don't resort to dirty politics. She may want to keep her botoxed mouth shut, IMO. Just in case the Obama's don't treat the McCain's as kindly as they treated the Clinton's.

The Bush Twins : George and John   June 19th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Excuse me Cindy, but lets not forget your husband was married to his first wife when he was serving in Vietnam. You know, the wife he had when he was fooling around with you, the wife he left for you, after she had a car accident that left her crippled. You didn't even know him when he was in Vietnam.
Oh, and your comment about always being proud of America, please, you played on Michelle's comment. As I said before anyone with half a brain could understand what Michelle was saying.
Go away puppet you are annoying !

God bless Barack and Michelle

I respect you as a citizen but not as our first lady. You give our enemies too much to use against us.

John Smith   June 19th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

This woman, like some "blind and bitter" Hillary supporters, give Blond women a "bad name!"

The dictates and laws of God are bigger and better than the laws and rules of nations! Not everyone has and continues to be ALWAYS proud of America. I can never be proud of a nation that:
1. goes to war, and disrupts the lives of others in the name of …..
2. practices 'bigatory, racism, sexism…
3. has no regard for the poor and the weak…

There are alternative ways of serving a nation– teachers teach our youth on a daily basis; they are part of our present and future.

When Cindy MCain learns to speak "good English" and not "emotional language," maybe I might listen to her!

Stepford Wife, surgically enhanced, plagiarizing "housewife", lying homewrecker and husband stealer from a sickbed first wife, drug-stealing addict; all the qualities of a amphibian-looking, outdated Barbie Doll and a First Lady to be.

Brendan   June 19th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

This is just another sad attempt by the McCain campaign to gain any ground in this race. The Obama movement is just that, a movement, not a political campaign. The McCain campaign is failing to include the real "people." It's time the Republicans stopped using patriotism as an excuse.

Rose - Baltimore, MD   June 19th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

As Michelle said on "The View" yesterday, Laura Bush is a one of the nice people, she doesn;'t fan the fire out of nothing to try to make something. On the other hand Cindy you are a a wicked woman, and ugly at heart. You are the one who started all this and are still going on with it. No amount of charity can erase your wickedness. You keep faning the fire, it will bring both you and your husband down. It is a pit you have chosen to dig and will burry both of you. Keep on fanning.

He Said It First   June 19th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Careful there, Cindy-

Do you REALLY want America to go through your baggage?
Yours may be Louis Vuitton, but you have an awful LOT of them-

You may want to take the high road on this one, before the addictions and the stealing from charities and the adultery jumps out of your skeleton-filled closet

Audrey Fryer   June 19th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Isn't this woman's husband the one that just finished saying "it's tough to be proud of America". Run with this statement for a while to contrast with the one you run of Michelle Obama all the time.

What a bunch of malarky–Michele Obama put her foot in her mouth–let her take the heat for her misguided comment. Couple her comment with her graduate dissertation and I think her PR group is feeding the fanatics a lot of propaganda. Go McCain!

Ms. Cindy I really don't think you want to start talking about Michelle, then people will start bringing up your past. if i had to chose between what Michelle and what you have done ??? I would rather be Michelle.

Cindy, should back down. All those skeltons in her closets are fighting to get out.

Cindy do you recall John McCain was married when you met him?
Cindy do you recall you destroyed the McCain's marriage and this is why your step-kids wanted nothing to do with you? ( I know he was separated from his first wife…whatever)
Cindy do you recall saying you would never ever release your tax filings?

She makes Laura Bush look like Hillary Clinton. lol

D Murray   June 19th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

I really didn't want to go there with Cindy McCain but it looks like I'm forced to do so; tell us Cindy how proud are you of stealing another woman's husband? didn't John meet you while still married to his first wife? didn't he marry you just a month of divorcing his first wife? didn't you abuse drugs and stole from from an organization you started? So, who would I like for my daughter to be most like? you or Michelle Obama? and the winner is? you guessed right, Michelle Obama.

Ben   June 19th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

cindy..come on..you should know better as your husbands 2nd wife. Why dont you hold it against him for not being loyal to his first? vindictive you are!!!

David   June 19th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

This is just more rhetoric. This is just more political manuevering by the McCain campaign to distract from the important issues. Any normal thinking person knows she is not unpatriotic. his is more of the fear tactic being used and anyone who doesn't agree with Republican policies and speaks out against it is unpatriotic. Just another example of John McCain fully endorsing Bush policies.

Gnomepark   June 19th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Generation X   June 19th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Cindy McCain better stay quiet before all hell breaks out about her affair with John and her drug history and stealing. Ms. money bags needs to shut the hell up!!! LMAO

Why try 08   June 19th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

I have been observing alot this election. It is funny to me how the most patriotic people seem to care more about the country than the people of this country. And label people unpatriotic who care more about the People of this country than the country. Forget worrying about a symbol why don't you care about your neighbor.

How can you talk America the beacon when your willing to tare up our Constitution. We are one step away from marshal law. Why are we trying to rebuild Iraq when New Orlean is still wrecked. What is so patriotic about helping the poor everywhere else but letting citizens starve on your own streets.

Welcome to the two America's. One is rich and beatiful and never has to fight for rights. Because they are given freely and other our sent to die for your this America.

The other America is not so rich and has to fight for the right just to be recognize as american. And is sent to fight for wars it doesn't even believe in. But they do it proudly.

Depending on which America you live in may determine how you view America.

True patriotism is not whether you agree with our country but are you willing to fight for it.

Venus   June 19th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Molly Weasley   June 19th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

I wonder if she felt proud of her country when she was stealing drugs from her family's charity. I guess if I were the richest woman in Arizona and the wife of a U.S. senator, thus able to reach a plea agreement instead of serving time in jail, I would be proud, too.

Student for OBAMA 08!!!   June 19th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

First of all I guess it’s easy to be really proud of your country when you were born with a platinum spoon in your mouth and this country glorifies people like that. Michelle Obama has literally worked from the bottom up to get where she is today. To be the first African American women to be standing where she is and seeing her husband the first African American Presidential Nominee, that is quite a milestone for this country and something that should fill her with pride like never before.

I am a 21 year old African American college student and I too feel a pride for this country I have never felt before. That does not make me any less patriotic than Cindy McCain or any other American. Not only the fact that Barack is an African American is something to be proud of but young people are getting so involved with this election like never before, turn out (at least on democratic side) is historical, the amount of people donating to his campaign is historic. This is absolutely amazing to be watching and I am truly blessed to not only witness this but be active in it.

So Cindy McCain can shove her comments where the sun don’t shine for all I care. I am sure she would not appreciate people bringing up her scandals like being an adulteress, a drug addict, then stealing drugs.

Her inability to see where Michelle Obama was coming from shows to me her inability to accept that people grow up with different experiences in this country that leads them to different perspectives. Does not make one person right and the other wrong. And does not make someone more patriotic than the other, it makes this America.

RyVA   June 19th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Cindy loves the USA.
Where else can you have an affair at 24 with a married 42 year old, start up your own charity to illegaly steal prescription drugs, plead guilty to multiple felonies, and not serve any jail time because you're rich and pay off the sentence?

Craig Nazor   June 19th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

So is Cindy McCain proud of they way our country tortures prisoners? Is she proud of America's use of napalm and agent orange in Vietnam? Is she proud of the way European Americans sometimes have treated Native Americans and African Americans? I love America too, but sometimes America does things that I am not proud of - as a matter of fact, I am ASHAMED of. If a candidate (or his wife) can't admit that publicly, how can there be change? Look at George W. Bush - he won't even admit that we tortured people! I am ashamed that America tortures people, and I will not vote for anyone who doesn't get and can't admit that fact!

Barbie Lives   June 19th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

This Barbie Doll will never be my first lady. She looks as if she is afraid of her husband, and afraid to open her mouth. The only reason John married her is so he could tap into her millions, and she doesn't seem very bright. No, Barbie is not for me. No way–not when we have Michelle as an alternative.

T. Stephen Cody   June 19th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

If Cindy keeps harping on her interpretation of Michelle's statement, perhaps Michelle should ask Cindy if she's equally proud of her role as a home-wrecker.

Ula Nejad- Sacramento Ca   June 19th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Why should she?. Michelle had time to air her views amongst a bunch of feminists yesterday. Michelle took "a while" to write to Madam First Lady……give me a break! Sarcastic? And yet she has the gall to say that 'Laura Bush does not add fuel to the fire'. Just the other day Obama's campaign decides to deny a 25 yr old Muslim woman a seat behind Obama at a event in Michigan. She gets a chief of staff like no other candidate because they fear she will be attacked. If the question of race arises its because Michelle Obama started it and the public will end it. It was her platform from day one. Too bad!

Speechless   June 19th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Of course, when Michelle Obama said (repeatedly) that she had not been proud of her country until her husband's candidacy, it is obvious that what she really meant was that America is a downright mean country.

David   June 19th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Really? Who cares? Cindy McCain is just about the most vacuous, insignificant public figure on record. Let's move on.

That is right.

McCain was not force to served in the military but he did.

Obama did not even try to sign up for the Reserv Force of perhaps join the ROTC.

The only thing that I have seen so far, Obama wrote a book and made lots of money. Well the speeches, that is all.

Obama is blowing smoke.

Miss Cindy Lou   June 19th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Why should she back down? Miss Cindy has nothing else to say. Her husband is losing big time and she can't for the life of her, understand why. "Isn't my hair blond enough, aren't my eyes blue enough, maybe if I put on some more lipstick America will see that I am the true first lady" –NOT.

Cindy bores me to tears. She's a washed up junkie who happens to have more money than the rest of us. This does not give her the license to waltz into the White House, which by the way is our house.

Independent Colorado   June 19th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Cindy McCain is ok knowing that she and her husband can say anything they want about Michelle Obama because the Obama camp won't stoop so low as to insult Cindy. He won't talk about her drug habbits, stealing from sick children, stealing recipes, or stealing another woman's husband. Nor will the Obama camp discuss how John McCain left his wife to be with Cindy after his ex wife was disfigured after a bad accident or the Keating scandal that would test McCain's "experience and judgment". Obama is better than that….But maybe the independent groups will expose this is another ad…

If Obama supporters do not want to drag Michelle into the fray, why do they ask her to campaign and give speeches for him? If you speak in public, if you endorse your husband for the highest public office in the land, be prepared to be applauded or criticized for waht you say. If you make a mistake, apologize and learn from it. I wonder why this is so difficult for Obama supporters to do, and why Michelle can't just apologize (instead of trying to rationalize the slip) and move on.

I am sick of Cindy McSane, If I was worth $100 milliond Dollars and didn't have to lift a finger for it "I WOULD LOVE MY COUNTRY " too, She is a poor excuse of a woman and a mother she needs to HOOK up with Michelle Obama and learn how to be a strong WOMAN and not allow her husband to call her the "C" word be voicefull about that put him in check. All I want to know is was Cindy Mc Cain proud of America before the Civil Rights Act of 1964? Or, was she proud of America when it led us into an uneccesary war in Iraq? Or, what about the government's response to Katrina?

I think that it can be said that there are many things to proud of America for, but there some things that we should be ashamed about.

Cindy; saying that this wasn't a planned attack is bogus….you know what you did and your advisers know what they advised you to do.

Michelle Obama who grew up in the South Side and went to Harvard should have more to be proud of her country than a beer heiress anyways.

Chipster   June 19th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

This pettiness reflects badly on Cindy McCain and she should be more gracious and understanding. It's the same kind of pettiness as those who compare her to some sort of Stepford Barbie. It makes them look foolish and childish, not Cindy McCain.

It is clear that most Americans understood how much more proud Michelle Obama is, as we all are, that our country has finally is moving beyond race and gender in the selection of our top leaders. It's incredible that it took us this long and that we still have far to go. The United States should be the shining example of equality and opportunity for the world Why has it taken over 200 years? Perhaps because of the sort of pettiness that Mrs. McCain has shown. I hope she will open her mind, especially since she has also misspoken or had her words misinterpreted and will most certainly do so again in the future. We are all human.

I find Cindy cold as ice and not very likable and I guess she has no problem with saying negative things even though Barach has said he would not about her. Michelle is very down to earth and I can see why Laura came to her aid. Good for Laura!

Sharon   June 19th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

I think most Americans understood exactly what Mrs. Obama was trying to say and Mrs. McCain could take some lessons in grace and humility from Mrs. Obama. After so many years of negativism in politics, it's time someone said something honest, and she shouldn't be criticized for it.
