Schneider: Men could be the deciding factor

(CNN) - After the long, bruising primary battle with Hillary Clinton, a lot of Democrats were concerned Barack Obama would have a problem getting support from women, but the big surprise is that it could be men who become the deciding factor this election cycle.

According to the latest CNN Opinion Research Corporation Poll Obama is running nearly even with John McCain among men. McCain has a slight edge with 49 percent to Obama’s 47 percent. Meanwhile, Obama leads McCain by 9 points among women 52 percent to 43 percent.

WATCH Why men could be the deciding factor

The support from men has become crucial for Republicans in past elections.

According to exit polls from the 2000 election, 53 percent of men helped George W. Bush get elected in 2000, with only 42 percent of men supporting Al Gore. In 2004 George Bush was re-elected with 55 percent support from men to John Kerry’s 44 percent. Most women voted for Gore and Kerry.

In fact, in the last nine presidential elections going back to 1972, men have voted for the Democrat only twice: for Jimmy Carter in 1976, when the economy was bad and a Republican was in the White House. And for Bill Clinton in 1992, when the economy was bad and a Republican was in the White House.

In the 2008 presidential cycle, the economy is bad and a Republican is in the White House, giving Obama a foothold with male voters.

Forty-four percent of men ranked the economy as their number one concern and among the nearly half of men who say their top concern is the economy, Obama has a 7 point lead, 52 percent to McCain’s 45 percent.

That's the thing about the gender gap. It's usually taken to mean women vote Democratic. But it also means men vote Republican — at least, it used to.

Ummm... so you guys who won't vote for Obama because of "lack of experience". Huh! I guess you wouldn't have voted for Kennedy or Lincoln either. Two of our greatest presidents! That figures...

Polls are best used to motivate rafts especially this time of the year. I'm 63 years old and never yet been asked to participate in a poll of any kind and don't know of any other person who has.

The simple fact of the matter is there aren't enough idiots in America to elect McCain and you don't need a poll to realize that fact.

McCain's campaign has to throw mud and dirt to cover up their policies as their platform goes against everthing the average citizen wants and people are hurting too much to be fooled for a third straight time.

So many of you who probably do not know Obama will knock him down without reason. He is not an empty suit or stuffed suit. I guess you like the way the Republican bosses are running the country.

Sante, your post does not make any sense. And you don't know how to spell and use the word kilometer.

    Very interesting article/post.
    Love reading your posts.

I hope men are smart and will prove they know how to decide who loves their country.

Obama broke his word again today. He had signed a promise re: campaign funds. Now he has flipped on that.
Also is now saying he will not "end" the war and bring home the troops as soon as he had said he would.
Bush gave him advice on that kinda talk and he is now backing off.
I guess old Wright was right. He is just like any other politician.
Just does and says what he thinks the people want to hear. Not truths. He thinks if we tell truths about him its bashing.
He's a dim wit panderer and his lemmings swallow it.
To all you Obama supporters I hope your children have a wonderful vacation in Sunny Pakistan when Obama sends the troops there to catch Bin Laden. Or will he send the NYPD since he thinks its a police matter. Catch him and let some liberal judge let him go for lack of evidence.
As it was written in an article in Real Clear Politics today, Obama makes promises but what are the plans to do it.?
Dems are so upset that the war is going good. They so did want us to fail.
Thank heavens for Bush. I am not into wearing Burkas.

I just listened to the town hall meeting of John McCain at St. Paul MN.

McCain is clueless. He could not even explain his plan for health care to a hurt and concerned mother, a mother concern for her son. He had no comfort for her.

McCain is out of touch and cannot match Obama on explaining plans for this country. A vote for McCain is a vote to send America to hell.

America NEEDS to get over this military mentality! There are tons and tons of people who have and continue to serve this nation:

    1. What about teachers who shape the minds and hearts of our youths for the future?

    2. What about parents who toil each day to keep some of us alive?

    3. What about the factory worker who is there on a daily basis to build things for the nation?

    4. What about judges, lawyers and any law-enforcement agency involved in keeping our laws and communities safe?

    5. What about farmer, without whom we will all die of starvation?

Have all these people not served this nation equally as the military?
Members of my family have lots of military members, but this nation is forgetting ours who have equally continued to serve this nation!

As a Hillary Clinton supporter, I would have a difficult time voting for someone who spent 20 years as a member of a black liberation church where the pastor preached hatred and racism - . Either Obama lied about never hearing Rev. Wright preach any inflammatory sermons or he supported what he said. Where is the truth? It brings to question his honesty, his judgment and his core values. An angry wife does not make me more inclined to vote for him. Obama is no different than any of the politicians he preaches against! The primary is over, but Obama has never answered these questions about his core values. So far they don't look like mine. The news media has pumped and pimped him to the American public - let's see if they will ask him the difficult questions.

  14. Facts Like Them Or Not

George Bush & his policies captured a German citizen and held him in Quatamano for 5 years even though the military exonerated him after the first 2 years. This is a fact and there is a documentary shown world wide on this very incident.

Now Bush & McCain are bring a person to trial who was 15 years old in Afghanistan when U.S. soldiers raided the house he was in and killed everyone except him but they did shoot him in the back twice and then sent him to Quatamano as a illegal combatant. This person is now facing a military trial for war crimes.

Does anyone see anything wrong with these types of events?????

Is there a single Obama idiot out there who can tell us why we've had no terrorist attacks in the U.S. in almost 7 years?

I didn't think so--and that's why you'll have suicide bombers in your neighborhoods and roadside bombs on your streets after Obama appeases Iran, Al Qaeda and the Taliban.

Better order your armored cars now to drive your kids to school.

How is it that I can write a comment and hit the submit comment icon and watch my words disappear?

OK, I'll try again. Guys why would you vote for John McCain when he has been supporting Bush's polices of shipping our jobs to offshore cheap labor? Bush and McCain have been using the Iraq war as a front to grab oil that they can use to get our last dollars.

Haven't the past eight years been enough?

Change, where it is? He is one from the same mould saying one thing and doing another; NAFTA, Copmaign financing, Rev Wright, his church – the list is on and on. One wonders why so many idiots still believe in him. Are they blind? The truth is obvious for people who have their eyes and ears open.

Read the King James version of the bible and it basically indicates a woman is the property of a man as espoused in the shalt not section on coveting.

The reason women vote for Democrats is because they think they are as good as men and have the right to make their own decisions on everything that affects their bodies and their lives.

Men who want to keep women as their property and make their decisions for them only have one course of action and that is to elect John McCain. His voting record on women's issues and his policies clearly shows he stands with men on this issue.
