Edwards recently said that while he is not interested in the vice presidency, he hasn't ruled it out if asked.

WASHINGTON (AP) — There's new information about the hunt for a running mate for Barack Obama.

A member of the Congressional Black Caucus who's met with Obama's vice-presidential screening team says she offered the names of former senators John Edwards and Sam Nunn — and was told they're on the list. Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick of Michigan says when she mentioned that Al Gore is her favorite, the two members of Obama's team smiled.

Kilpatrick wouldn't say which names Obama's team brought up.

Lawmakers who've been briefed say there are about 20 names on the prospective vice-presidential list, which is said to include current elected officials, former elected officials, and retired military generals.

look, if you EVER voted for bush, then you have zero credibility…so stop pretending to be a hillary supporter who will vote for mccain "just like all [your] life-long demorat friends."
anyone who is a life-long dem and has lived through the last 7 years would never vote for mccain. that simple.

Lenore Z.   June 20th, 2008 11:09 am ET

I agree with some other comments that Obama is such a smart man in every respect that he knows how to pick the best V.P.

John, Las Vegas, NV   June 20th, 2008 11:08 am ET

Edwards and Gore would both be fine VPs. Obama could set either one of them up to head a special effort on global warming. Either one could start by turning off about 90% of the things in their mansions because both have mansions that gobble up about a dozen times the energy consumption of an average American family. Or make them co-VPs, thereby cutting global warming even more by having them BOTH turn off some things in their mansions.

Annoyed in Ohio   June 20th, 2008 11:08 am ET

I wouldn't mind an Obama/Edwards ticket but I think the smartes thing to do would be to go with someone with military/foreign policy experience. The would really shut a lot of folks up.

@Denise P Quinton-

"Obama better choose a smart national security VP as he has no experience nor the ability to lead our country. I personally do not care who he picks as I will cast my vote for MCCAIN 08, as will my entire lifelong Democrat family"

If you don't really care why comment? That didn't add anything to the discussion at all.

Gadissa   June 20th, 2008 11:08 am ET

NO Hillary please.

GOP supporter   June 20th, 2008 11:07 am ET

Edwards has repeated many times that he didn't want it….but…"I'll take it anyway". Typical Democrat…wishee, washee.

pjo   June 20th, 2008 11:07 am ET

Hillary is too good…to accomplished…to smart to be VP to this Obama. For those of you who are Obama supporters, if you get what you want…you deserve it. Just like those who voter for Bush. I hope you're following Obama moves.AND decisions…"WHAT A JOKE"

Shawn - GA   June 20th, 2008 11:07 am ET

If he want to win for sure he needs to choose Gore. Without Gore it coult go to either Obama or McCain. With Al Gore, Obama/Gore would be unstoppable.

Kaitlin   June 20th, 2008 11:06 am ET

I thought John Edwards made it clear he was not interested in VP? Hmm… Well, I don't care I like Edwards - so if he changed his mind, awesome.

yardstylze   June 20th, 2008 11:06 am ET

Dan Abrams showed footage he uncovered of a Fox News interview with John McCain on March 13, 2008, in which McCain said, "I didn't really love America until I was deprived of her company."

Abrams thinks McCain's comments could undermine the "right wing's steady attacks against Michelle Obama."

Chip Pudims   June 20th, 2008 11:05 am ET

Once again the Democrats will nominate a candidate based on popularity and electability, while the GOP nominations are typically contingent upon qualifications! Hopefully voters will recognize the reality of politics and vote for the most qualified and not the most attractive or likeable.

The other day a video clip was shown of Sen. Obama seated with various security advisors — seated next to him was Wesley Clark.
It took my breath away! I love John Edwards and would support any choice (except HRC). BUT……Clark is "the man!"

OBAMA/CLARK '08!!

Mark Cary, NC   June 20th, 2008 11:05 am ET

I like Edwards but he wasn't that great of a Senator for our state and is labeled a very unpopular one here in NC. Why do you think they waited to announce his endorsement after Obama won NC?

whatever   June 20th, 2008 11:05 am ET

I think he should pick the man in the yellow hat!!!

Mike   June 20th, 2008 11:05 am ET

Edwards already said he is not interested. As much as I like him, he adds more fodder to the "not eough experience" argument that the repubs keep throwing out there. he can still choose from Webb, Biden, Richardson, Hagel, Sebelius, Gore (?), Clinton, Clarke, the list of good dems goes on…he'd be wise to pick governor or someone with good foreign policy and/or national security experience (bill richardson maybe?)

Andy   June 20th, 2008 11:04 am ET

Al Gore is the best choice. He is young enough that in eight years he can run for President again.

In addition, as the Veep, Al can travel the world as the Nations Green Czar.

Big gator   June 20th, 2008 11:04 am ET

Pick Hillary and then go "Sike". Go with Kathleen Sebelius.

Independent Fred   June 20th, 2008 11:04 am ET

This one is a virtual no brainer Senator Obama has but two legitamate choices.

If he wants the strongest ticket it's Joe Biden. Who is btw more knowledgable than Obama, McCain & Clinton.

However If he wants the Slam dunk he'll pick Senator Clinton.

Edwards (whom I respect) is too liberal.
Gore's a good man but he's a bit too preachy for my tastes.

Steve   June 20th, 2008 11:04 am ET

Al Gore is doing to much now. If he was the VP he would bogged down with to much politics to really accomplish anything when it comes to Global Warming and the environment. Everything would be argued for 8 years until the next election before anything positive was done. The right would filibuster and vote down every bill presented just because Al is a dem, and who he is.

No Al stay out of it you are doing way to much positive now.

The choice of VP on both sides will be a major determining factor for a majority of voters. I doubt if Obama will choose Hillary, it would be a nice payback if the DNC forced her upon him as they forced him upon us. It is not unusual for the party to strongly suggest a running mate to the nominee. Time will tell. I will write Hillary Clinton on my ballot, unless she is his VP, then I will gag and vote for that ticket

NObama   June 20th, 2008 11:02 am ET

If Obama is even considering Edwards, then most democrats must be rejecting the invite. Says something about the disaster even the die-hard dems see coming.

Hey Kyu - 9:47

Trust. . . . .you used the word trust in relation to Hillary Clinton. I think you menat liar, hypocrite and race baiter.

Liar= I was against NAFTA always. . . .sniper fire in Bosnia
Hypocrite= It is clear MI and FL won't count. It is the Superdelegates job to pick the best candidate, no, wait, the SD's are anti democracy (of course after realizing they were siding with Obama)
Race baiter= Bill saying, EVEN Jesse Jackson won SC, or white hard working americans won't vote for Obama

So, how is it that trust came up in this converstion. And by the way, those 18 milllion that you all harp on. . . . LONG GONE. I know many HRC supporters who voted for her early on, but then changed allegiance based on her deplorable actions throughout the PRIMARY.

GO AWAY HRC SUPPORTERS. We don't need you, and your irrational views!!!!!

Nina, DC   June 20th, 2008 11:02 am ET

He should have the GAO look into the contractors that the Govt is hiring to fill vacant spots. They are all over the place, spying and pretending they're working for the people's interests, when they are really getting info so they can sell to the Govt down the line. It's shameful.

It would be his biggest mistake if he does not pick Hillary as VP. Atleast 30% of Hillary supporters will vote for McCain if she is not on the ticket. You pick the person not the party in this election. By the way, I am one of 30% Hillary supporters who will vote for McCain if Hillary is not on VP ticket.

Obama/Hillary or McCain

Jason Carter   June 20th, 2008 11:00 am ET

The main qualification that an Obama running mate needs to have is a clean record that is consistant with Obama's campaign message. Obama can win on his own, as long as his VP pick doesn't pull his campaign off-message. This makes his choice easier, since most of those on his list don't fit his message. My guess is that Obama will choose Claire McCaskill, who has good personal chemistry, is a southern Democrat, has high approval ratings among democrats, and has, along with Obama and McCain, renounced earmarks for pet projects. I also like Sebelius for much of the same reasons, but she is relatively unknown to Obama, so there is less personal chemistry there.

pjo   June 20th, 2008 11:00 am ET

Edwards is a BAD idea. His interest is only in moving up as quickly as possible with little care to the people he is supposed to represent!

The best thing to come out of Kerry/Edwards campaign is that we in NC were able to get rid of this ambulance-chaser. Did everybody forget Kerry/Edwards did not carry NC in last election.

It is possible that NC will turn blue in November but, I doubt it will if Edwards is on the ticket!

My 2 cents from High Point, NC.

In most blogs there a lot of folks who are using the "18 million Hillary voters" as an excuse to say whatever nonsense they wish to say, but the truth is: that number is no longer factual (majority have already joined the movement, so you have a choice to join them if you can not beat them) if it ever were, is debateable. The train has driven past you! Hang on to the past if it makes you happy. For some of the voters out there who might not understand thinking that Sen. Obama is seeking this highest job due to self interest, I can tell you that should he change his mind or loose this election, I can bet you that there would be many large corporations that will be offering him at least 100 million dollars per year to serve as CEO. Who do you think will be the loosers? American people and the world!

Teariki   June 20th, 2008 10:48 am ET

1. Edwards has already said twice he does not want the position and to remove his name from consideration.
2. Gore did not even have the guts to make an endorsement until he found out who was going to win
3. Without Hillary (whether you like her or not) the Democrats can not take back the White House.

For all of you who say Obama can win without her, i would love to know what you are going to say when he doesnt. If he makes great decisions and does what the voters and majority of people are saying then he would select Hillary. Why doesn't the media give the Nader/Gonzalez team more attention. I think the public should now their views. Maybe the polls would change and America would wake up and know this not a two party race.

If Barack Obama picks Hillary, He's lost.

John Edwards would be great, but apparently (at least as of two weeks ago), doesn't want it.

Al Gore would be great too.

How about Bill Richardson, or Joe Biden, or Bob Casey?

NO HILLARY!!

Steve   June 20th, 2008 10:39 am ET

I agree with NG in DC this is going to cost him the election if he continues to ignore Hillary Clinton. I was watching Fox and CNN and they had a delegate for Clinton on there. I think this will be a rude awakening if he doesn't pick Clinton. I know this for a fact I will and agree with her vote for McCain. I am an Independent Voter by way. So no matter how much the press says he won't be hurt choosing someone else he will I guarantee it. The thing that puzzles me is why would #1 ignore the second best candidate on the ticket. Seems to me unity was the word. Not splitting the party. This makes me wonder especially with his choices for VP how he will do in office. Independent in the South. Specifically Georgia a battleground state!

That's Reality   June 20th, 2008 10:39 am ET

It doesn't matter who the VP is. The Democrats are weak on national security and a vote for them is a vote in the wrong direction. Keep America free and vote McCain-tried and true patriot. Obama will appease the enemy. Then our children will have to go back to war once this one is over.

Susan   June 20th, 2008 10:39 am ET

Nick   June 20th, 2008 10:39 am ET

He lost the nomination in '04. He couldn't deliver either North or South Carolina for Kerry. (The primary reason he was on the ticker) Cheney wiped the floor with him in '04 VP debate. Lost Iowa in '08 despite retaining all his support from '04. Lost badly in his home state of SC in '08. Why could anyone consider this a "dream" or even winning ticket?

Ijaz   June 20th, 2008 10:39 am ET

HRC is too polarizing, as are her supporters… just listen to them here…they are loosing sight and are ready to vote for McCain…sheeesh. Now if Chuck Hagel could be tapped, an Obama Hagel ticket will not only garner the independants but a lot of the republicrats also.

How do any of these potential VP candidates fit into Obama's rhetoric that he is the change in Washington needed because he does not represent what is old guard Washington. Don't these candidates for VP smell of old guard Washington. I mean come no, Gore was Clinton's VP for eight years. Yeah he has done some stuff for the environment but please, Al is not as green as everyone thinks. If he want' to change the future of the environment maybe he should start with his own home. Sam Nunn, that guys been in Washington forever. So does that mean that Obama is okay if only he is not old guard Washington but that he does need those he calls firmly entrenched in the old ways to beat McCain.

I' m confused about the change I am supposed to believe in.

Charlotte   June 20th, 2008 10:37 am ET

The choice of VP on both sides will be a major determining factor for a majority of voters. I doubt if Obama will choose Hillary, it would be a nice payback if the DNC forced her upon him as they forced him upon us. It is not unusual for the party to strongly suggest a running mate to the nominee. Time will tell. I will write Hillary Clinton on my ballot, unless she is his VP, then I will gag and vote for that ticket.

Anti-Obama   June 20th, 2008 10:36 am ET

Obama is a liar and he's not going to win. So it doesn't matter who he picks. Even if Jesus returned to Earth and Obama picked Him as his VP, he'd still lose.
He's a loser. Plain and simple.

DemocracyNow2008   June 20th, 2008 10:36 am ET

I also want to see Obama look at Kathleen Sebelius the Gov. of Kansas she is a very popular Democrat in a State that has been Red in the past elections and she is a Women without any Political baggage that would bring down the Obama campaign.

She would be my first choice Edwards second .

It will be a tough choice for Obama alot of good Democrats on that list.

Obama take you time and choice wisely.

RallyGrrrl   June 20th, 2008 10:36 am ET

Gore for VP
H. Clinton - Supreme Court
McCain - Secretary of Defense
Wesley Clark - National Security Advisor
Edwards - Secretary of State
and Sebelius - Chief of Staff

That's my dream ticket & entourage! If Obama could just "leak" the names of who he'd appoint to Supreme Court, SoD, NSA, SoS, CoS- maybe that would bring more people on board.

Matt from VA   June 20th, 2008 10:35 am ET

Edwards, Gore, Webb or Clark are all great choices for VP.
I think Senator Clinton would be an excellent choice for Secretary of Health and Human Services. That way she could work on what is near and dear to her and that is reforming the Health care industry and insurance.
To all the "still bitter" HRC supporters your canidate lost. She ran a long tough campaign but it is over and if the only way you vote for Obama is for her to VP, then you are not an Obama supporter anyway.
If you support the Democratic party and care about improving the lives of many Americans you will vote for Obama but if you are so spoiled and childishly self centered not to care about what is best for most Americans but only that your team wins, you need to seek professional counseling. If HRC would have won I an Obama supporter would have had no problem voting for Clinton.
I guess that is were Obama supporters and HRC supporters are different, we want whats best for America and that is definaetly not John McCain.

I realize this is an Obama site–and I seldom get posted–Can't figure out why Obama does not have a strong lead in the polls with the hundreds of millions he is throwing around. He almost looks as rich as Edwards now–smooth and shiney! Nurse for McCain–my taxes are high enough, thank you.

HRC4VP   June 20th, 2008 10:34 am ET

It's not blackmail to say "HRC for VP or I vote for the other guy" - that's an ultimatum. Blackmail would be "HRC for VP or I leak to the press that you accepted bribes to get elected."

Mike in TX   June 20th, 2008 10:33 am ET

Reading these comments really makes me fearful for November. Are this many voters really that petty and deluded? "Me and my mom and her 14 Democratic brothers and sisters are voting McCain!" Way to focus on the issues, America.

HRC was not robbed of a nomination by the DNC or the media, or the Illuminati or Skull and Bones or anyone else for that matter. There was a system that's been in place for years, and the delegates weighed heavily in favor of Obama. Michigan and Florida didn't get stolen from HRC, she would've lost with or without them.

If you're a conservative Republican at heart, or you TRULY do believe McCain is a better candidate based on the issues, then vote for him. If you're bitter about Hillary not getting the nomination or you have a secret fear of an African-American in the White House, please, for the good of the nation, grow up.

Butch   June 20th, 2008 10:33 am ET

This is news? They are on a list of 20? Let me play- Hillary Clinton and Bill Richardson. CNN, give me credit for coming up with 2 names on the list.

Patrick, St. Louis   June 20th, 2008 10:33 am ET

Leah,

Do you realize the danger in your words? Saying you will vote for McCain if Obama doesn't put Hillary on the ticket undermines every dire situation our country faces today. You will vote for an endless war in Iraq, two crucial Supreme Court appointments that can eventually overturn roe vs. wade (among other consequences), a continued dependency on oil instead of finding alternatives, and an extremely relaxed approach to global warming, all because you think Hillary got a raw deal in the primary? It was her poorly run campaign that cost her the largest lead ever in a primary election, not the media, Obama, or anyone else you want to blame. But nevermind that. Go ahead. Vote for McCain and then reap what you sow. Genius.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

Renee   June 20th, 2008 10:33 am ET

I wouldn't do it if I were Edwards. If Obama doesn't get elected this would make Edwards a 3 time loser, eliminating any future chance he has of becoming president.

I kept saying and I'm still saying that OBAMA/GORE would be a strategic move, not only for this term (4~8) but also for the next. Gore has helped champion lots of things that have revolutionized our society; he's currently in the proceess of doing one.

Just look up all my comments on these blogs about OBAMA/GORE, you'd know now that I kept saying this long time ago… people are beginning to get the drift just now..

Joe in NJ   June 20th, 2008 10:32 am ET

Are people serious when they say Joe Biden? I have no idea who to vote for as I'm not crazy about Obama or McCain. Who I choose will depend a lot on who they pick for their VP. If Obama picks Hillary, Gore, or Biden, there is no way I am voting for him.

Wake up democrats. Obama needs someone with successful executive experience. Ideally someone from the midwest who can help him deliver everything surrounding IL, which is realatively up for grabs. That is the formula for a landslide. Its pretty simple.

Beverly, NYC   June 20th, 2008 10:31 am ET

Edwards and Biden are my two top choices. I don't think he can choose another woman without the Hillary fanatics going nuts.

As for the campaign finance item. I think Obama is smart not to limit himself to a spending cap. We have all seen how the republicans play, they will use 527 to swiftboat him the same way they did Kerry. I recall a lot of negative talk about his wife Theresa as well, same thing they are now doing wth Michelle. If Kerry didn't have to waste time against the swiftboat attacks, the white house would not be the Bush families private foundation where the family idiot has been parked for 8 years. Now Barrack has the team and money to fight these smear and defend ads. If John McCain had gone back on his word, all the hot air political hacks would be touting it as a great strategic move. How come no one is upset that he used public funds as collateral for a campaign loan. The hypocracy continues! When your home is foreclosed see if you can get a sweetheart loan deal with your tax dollars.

Dem 08   June 20th, 2008 10:30 am ET

On the economy Obama is beating John McSame in the polls.

McSame is beating Obama on matters on national security and foreign policy. Obama need not pick Edward, rather he should look for some one with great national security credential for example, Sam Nunn, Wesley Clark or Jim Webb. That would neutralize McSame advantage as a war hero and lead to landslide victory for the dems.

The discussion of who Barak Obama is considering for Vice President should be done within his group and his group only. Vetting through the media and through leaks from our legislators is not going to give this country balanced leadership. All of them (member of Congress), and to a great extent, the general public, have too many axes to grind from the last 20 plus years of lack-luster top-down leadership.
A trail of leaks, I believe, should not give sway to the final decision Mr. Obama must make. While recognizing the need for political support from the power groups, he must also remember who it is he is asking to vote for him in the general election. The American electorate is looking to him and his potential administration to change our grid-locked, lobbyist controlled form of government.
Let him decide…what have we got to lose?

Tom for Hagel   June 20th, 2008 10:29 am ET

Chuck Hagel would bring the most to strengthen an Obama ticket. Who better than McCain’s “buddy” to counter his positions and broaden the tickets appeal in the purple AND Red states..

LD in Brew City   June 20th, 2008 10:26 am ET

Obama could pick Carter as his running mate, and it would still be a winning ticket.

Just to get the facts straight…Obama never signed a contract that he would accept public financing. He merely filled out a questionaire. He even went further than that and gave an explaination on the questionaire that he would only accept public funds if he had a discussion with McSame on the terms of public funds. That discussion never occured, and McSame then waited to accept public funds after Obama opted out of public funds. McSame knew this would happen, and waited for the cheapshot on Obama because he has nothing else to run on.

I have always felt that Senator Obama and John Edwards would make the best team. I see them being abe to be the most aligned in governing the country. I would most prefer John Edwards as president if anything were to happen to Senator Obama.
Sorry can't stand the possibility of Clinton. That just doesn't work. I do not want Clinton as president period. In my opinion if this race had been between Clinton and Edwards, Edwards would have won.
I know that there are people out there who love Hillary. Based on her actions, her behavior in the Senate, the way she ran her campaign… I have absolutely NO desire o see her in the white house. She and Bill were despicable and outrageous and were way out of line during the campaing. Their propensity to lie is huge. Bill Clinton was disbarred and impeached for 'lying' under oath. The Clintons DO NOT need to be given more power and rewarded for their behavior. I won't vote for a ticket with Hillary on it. To me it would feel like voting for George Bush after all that we know about him as a leader.
Obama/Edwards if the BEST leadership for our country. I didn't know he was still being considered but I hope he will accept if asked because he would be a great president and they would make a great TEAM FOR CHANGE.

One question. Why do people always say Obama is lying to us? Or that he is untrustworthy? What actions has HE taken, (not somone who he happens to know) that would be deemed untrustworthy? Someone answer my question. He did not steal any election. He won it smartly and fairly. Hillary ran a bad campaign. Those combinations proved detremental to her campaign. Nothing was stolen from her by the DNC or anyone else. If you want to blame someone blame her campaign team.

VP: Edwards already said he would not accept it didn't he? I think Wesley Clark may be a good option, or Biden.

It think that would be good for the country but the Repubs would take too much advantage of that since they can't act like adults about these things. Richardson is good too but I think someone with military or foreign policy credentials would be best to counteract John McCains fear mongering.

Obama has run a smart, savvy campaign. I trust him to pick the perfect running mate…whoever that might be.

As to the Clinton supporters still threatening to vote for the Democrat nominee…your choice, but please realize that Clinton can't be elected President-EVER- by just 18 million voters. If you wont' support Obama, do you think that the Obama supporters will support Clinton in another run? Wake up, if you EVER want to see her run again, and stand a chance at winning, you will vote for Obama so that you can expect that when her time comes, his supporters will support her. Otherwise, if you don't vote for Obama, and he loses, you and Hillary will be blamed, and she can kiss her future political plans goodbye forever.

Does it really matter? Obama leans farther LEFT than ALL of them. He's too LIBERAL for America. He will lose.

California Voter   June 20th, 2008 10:15 am ET

For me to even consider voting for Obama, he would have to have Hillary on the ticket. He's sounding more and more like the "typical politician" who does anything to get the votes — oh, that's what he said about Hillary. Anyway, I am finding is dishonesty and his core values (black liberation church member for 20 years with a minister that preached hate and racism) very difficult to stomach and making over Michelle is not going to help. if Clinton is not on the ticket, I'm voting for McCain. Not bitter and not a racist!

life long dem   June 20th, 2008 10:15 am ET

he better pick hillary or he wont get my vote. and that's a promise.

Joe   June 20th, 2008 10:15 am ET

Edwards as VP, I would have to vote for McCain….

William, from Cali   June 20th, 2008 10:14 am ET

I"m not all that concerned about , who will be VP. It's just a "Slot"position, to try and get ; "the other side, to rally around me". A strategy of politics; who can bring in the most votes, that I don't have? Can this person, lead the Country; and keep us safe , from our enemies……….Now thats the real question, to be asking yourselves!

Theresa in Minneapolis   June 20th, 2008 10:14 am ET

I'd like to know why Obama should choose Hillary when such a large majority of her people are going to vote for McCain based on the dirty politics she played during the primary season. I'll vote for him no matter who he chooses but all you guys make me hope he does NOT choose her.

You guys and your PUMA crap and all of the nasty blogging ruined that for her.

Congrats…

Who Cares!!!

Jay   June 20th, 2008 10:14 am ET

Hahahaha! Yeah, pick Gore or Edwards, Obama. Let's remind America again of what losers they are. YAWN! Boring ticket….

Kris   June 20th, 2008 10:13 am ET

Not a bad ticket at all…Edwards is strong in debateing the issues. A tough Dem. I think it would be a great Administration.

JJ   June 20th, 2008 10:13 am ET

Neither Gore nor Edwards will bring strength to that ticket. He needs someone with a military background to help him with this war mess. Nunn would be a good choice. But didn't Edwards already turn down the VP slot????

Cheryl   June 20th, 2008 10:13 am ET

Obama and Edwards……sounds good. Obama is smart, as any great leader would do, you surround yourself with the very best from both parties for the good of the country. I am so proud of Obama's strategy, what a smart man, I can see him reaching back into the pool of smart politicians, common American and the brightest economists to get us out of the mess that we are in and put us on top. But the most important thing that Obama can do is to put God first in this campaign and all things will be given unto us as Americans. PUT GOD FIRST MR. OBAMA…….We can do this….Obama 08!
