In this May CNN interview, Hagel won't rule out joining an Obama ticket.

OMAHA, Nebraska (AP) – Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel said Friday he would consider serving as Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's running mate if asked, but he doesn't expect to be on any ticket.

Hagel's vocal criticism of the Bush administration since the 2003 invasion of Iraq has touched off speculation that if Obama were to pick a Republican running mate, it might be Hagel. Hagel said in an interview with The Associated Press that after devoting much of his life to his country — in the Senate and the U.S. Army — he would have to consider any offer.

"If it would occur, I would have to think about it," Hagel said. "I think anybody, anybody would have to consider it. Doesn't mean you'd do it, doesn't mean you'd accept it, could be too many gaps there, but you'd have to consider it, it's the only thing you could do. Why wouldn't you?"

In a book published this year, Hagel said that despite holding one of the Senate's strongest records of support for President Bush, his standing as a Republican has been called into question because of his opposition to what he deems "a reckless foreign policy … that is divorced from a strategic context."

Hagel wrote in "America: Our Next Chapter" that the invasion of Iraq was "the triumph of the so-called neoconservative ideology, as well as Bush administration arrogance and incompetence."

He said Friday that he and Obama also have differences.

"But what this country is going to have to do is come together next year, and the next president is going to have to bring this country together to govern with some consensus," Hagel said.

He hasn't endorsed Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the presumed Republican nominee, whom he calls a friend. Hagel said Friday he hasn't thought about who to vote for in November.

In a March appearance on ABC's "This Week, he said he and McCain have "some pretty fundamental disagreements on the future of foreign policy," including the Iraq war.

McCain has said his goal is to reduce U.S. casualties, shift security missions to Iraqis and, ultimately, have a noncombat U.S. troop presence in Iraq similar to that in South Korea. He has said such a presence could last 100 years or more.

Hagel served as an Army sergeant in Vietnam and was twice wounded in 1968, earning two Purple Hearts. He was the only member of his party on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to support a nonbinding measure critical of Bush's decision to dispatch an additional 30,000 troops to Iraq.

"There is no strategy. This is a ping pong game with American lives," Hagel said at the time.

The rhetoric drew the public ire of Vice President Dick Cheney, who told Newsweek in January 2007 that Ronald Reagan's mantra to not speak ill of another Republican was sometimes hard to follow "where Chuck Hagel is involved."

It really doesn't matter who Obama chooses for VP, as he won't win the election. A lot of the "kids" may not remember George McGovern, Michael Dukakis, or even John Kerry. You would think by this time, the DNC would pick the right candidate, but no, they still haven't learned. Like the drooling fans and fawning media (CNN this means you), they fell for the hype and have backed the wrong horse.

I am a life long Democrat who just joined Citizens for McCain. This is a coalition of people not based on party registry. We are all certain that John McCain is the best choice in these troubled times, Those of you just coming of age who belittle him, should be ashamed of yourselves. While you were wetting your pants he was fighting for his country and being tortured for his efforts. What have you done lately besides watch You Tube? Senator Clinton worked hard for the nomination and almost had it, but was stabbed in the back by traitors and party lap dogs. We warned you we would vote for McCain and now we are! Fellow Dems join me and thousands of others at Citizens for McCain!

58 Old White Ladies or Obama — WE KNOW you're really either ONE big, black Dude for Obama, or 58 old ladies on the cusp of Alzheimer's. But don't worry — we love you just the same — we just don't take you seriously.

MBW   June 20th, 2008 10:01 pm ET

I vote for SEN. BLANCHE LINCOLN for VP

Desmond Sequeira   June 20th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

There you are - a high profile republican going honest.

Annamica, OH   June 20th, 2008 9:57 pm ET

I will never vote for Obama. I thought I could, but his flip flops are disgusting and you can't trust him. He is a TYPICAL politician.

disgusted   June 20th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Bishop - you are stupid.

Educate yourself before you vote in November.

You must be one of those that go around saying "Barack the vote".

Kyu Reisch, Radcliff, Kentucky   June 20th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Bishop, you are sick man, take some medicine, will you?
Obama supporters want Obama-Hagel, go ahead, they will get only 10 States, may be only Illinois.

Obamacan from Texas   June 20th, 2008 9:45 pm ET

Good choice. I was welcomed into his campaign and really believe he WILL change the way Washington is run. That would be an amazing start.

Carrie USMC   June 20th, 2008 9:30 pm ET

It would be great if Hagel Switched from Repuiblican to Independent

Tim, Nashua, NH   June 20th, 2008 9:27 pm ET

I voted for Hillary in the NH Primary and am not all that eager to vote for Obama at the moment. If he selects Hagel as his running mate, I would be very tempted. I certainly identify myself as a Democrat, but I also think there is way too much partisanship in politics today. A joint Dem/GOP ticket would go a long way in eradicating that. I know the two have major policy differences (abortion for example), but i think it would be a very powerful ticket.

Can't wait till November   June 20th, 2008 9:21 pm ET

Hagel, the real Republican maverick. McCain just has unresolved anger issues due to not seeing someone about his PTS disorder.

Jen, CA   June 20th, 2008 9:15 pm ET

By the way, Obama — YOU ARE a scary guy! Very, very scary!

Bishop   June 20th, 2008 9:13 pm ET

Another sensible Republican.

can we stop, with the Hilary for VP!!! She's NOT getting it!!! Go to the Republicans, sit home, or just give it up and support the Democrat…

Bayousara   June 20th, 2008 9:08 pm ET

Most likely the vice president will be a "he."

Let's just get on with it, Obama, and choose someone so we the voters can make up our minds if we want to support you.

I am still not sure.

James   June 20th, 2008 8:59 pm ET

Chuck Hagel should be President… not McCain or Obama.

However, since Obama has the Democratic nod… I think he should just stick with General Wesley Clark and leave Hagel in the Senate. We need good senators, too.

KE   June 20th, 2008 8:57 pm ET

The DNC campaign has hit the height of the primary season already.

Frances   June 20th, 2008 8:52 pm ET

But he's opposed to abortion. He'll lose all those who support a woman's right to choose. Not to mention the differences in other areas. Obama is a progressive. Hagel is a conservative.

Dori in AZ   June 20th, 2008 8:50 pm ET

Every time they mention a possibility of another good man or a good woman for the VP slot, I smile. Senator Obama will have more than enough high quality stock from which to select.

Franky   June 20th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

You know, I don't expect either that he can be on the ticket but like I said before, he's my choice. In my opinion, I think he would be the bomb…

Matt, Manchester, CT   June 20th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

Why would it be a shocker to see this senator join Obama's ticket?? Have all the RINO's you want Obama, we've had enough of them.

McCain=the draft   June 20th, 2008 8:19 pm ET

I totally trust Obama to pick the right running mate for himself ,and if it's Hagel, that's fine with me.

Donald from SC   June 20th, 2008 8:14 pm ET

I am a Democratic Party supporter. Senator Hagel might be a republican, but he thinks for himself and about the people. This is a major point of interest for me. I could seriously consider voting for a republican like him. However, if Songbird McCain were to choose Hagel as a running mate I will vote against them both. Hagel is one of the few republicans who puts objective leadership first (Jindal is another).

albert griffith   June 20th, 2008 8:10 pm ET

iam a big fan of chuck hagel myself but i pick wesley clark or kathleen sebelius, chuck hagel definitely sec of state!!!!!

Tom   June 20th, 2008 8:09 pm ET

"Bush administration arrogance and incompetence." So you'd be willing to back Obama??? On the positive side, if Obama gets elected the only thing reporters will have to change in that sentence fragment is the name. That is, if we still have a country left by then.
"But what this country is going to have to do is come together next year, and the next president is going to have to bring this country together to govern with some consensus," Hagel said. Again I ask, So you'd be willing to back Obama??? Have you happened to take a look at what he did to the democratic party with his race baiting and manipulation in FL and MI???? He's already accusing the Republicans of racism for what they're supposedly GOING to say. That's how you think someone brings the country together??? The squirrels are sure going to be chasing you around cause you are certifiably NUTS!

Helen, NY   June 20th, 2008 8:08 pm ET

This guy is another idiot like Barack. Who cares what he says. He will lose even in Nebraska as a democrat. They are fools and they want to make american people fools. It is not going to happen. CNN watch out.

Tony, Miami   June 20th, 2008 8:06 pm ET

John in Iowa seems to look at his picture in a mirror and automatically the word LOSER LOSER,,, strike him.

A Nightingale Sings in Berkley Square   June 20th, 2008 8:03 pm ET

That's about exciting as warm vomit. Give me a break.

What would Hagel bring to the table? Obama will bring out a new rope a dop a day just to get the crowd excited. No harm done, he would say but cause some excitement in an otherwise dull news day. Give me a break another idiotic attempt at levity.

Either Obama is the world's biggest fool or a complete idiot for putting a neo-presidential seal on his podium. If he can change the seal of the president, what makes you sure he won't change the name of the president's house. Give me a break! I like the name of Our White House. No change please.

I, for one, hope the closest he gets to the White House is the outhouse. He doesn't belong there as he is a serial quitter and a girlie man.

Second, did you see his gloves? Nice and frilly don't you think? What a comical cartoon character he is becoming.

How can anyone take him seriously. He is a clown. I saw new pictures today of sand baggers. I noticed not one was wearing gloves or girlie gloves like Obama likes to wear.

Give me a good old fashioned candidate with our values.

Bill, Streamwood, IL   June 20th, 2008 8:01 pm ET

Great, Obama/Hagel sure beats McCain/Lieberman.

Bob   June 20th, 2008 8:00 pm ET

Thank god I have a good accountant if this yahoo gets in……. For all us so called "Rich People" 250K or above . Come Jan 1 I will be upping the old defered compensation package and using every tax loop hole known to man to get below the magic number. I refuse to let my hard earned money go to some fool who cant afford his mortage or some BS social programs for the inner city.

Call me racist or selfish if you want ……. This is suppose to be the country where hard work pays off. I dont call getting taxed at %40 a reward. Democrats breed laziness, no responsibilty and no accountability.

For all you uneducated whining about not having the oppurtunity to go to college join the military they will pay for it.

Terry   June 20th, 2008 7:54 pm ET

I'd prefer Ted Strickland, Webb or Nunn. But if Hagel were a running mate, that would still be powerful ticket.

Bluesky   June 20th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

Having Senator Chuck Hagel on the VP Ticket is still NOT going to change my vote. I'll be voting for McCain in Gen Election.
NOT even if Obama put Hillary as VP on the ticket, I still WOULD NOT
vote for him!!!! Obama DOES NOT have the credentials and NO accomplishments in the Senate, to qualify to lead our Country as
President!!! Much less, Obama's wife, Michelle, has a mouth that
always criticizes America and "the whiteys" , therefore, does NOT
qualify to be First Lady of our Country.
An Ex-Democrat voting for McCain!!

Jan, Ohio   June 20th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

I really like Chuck Hagel & have said for MONTHS now that this is probably one of the most efficient ways to prove Obama really DOES stand for change in US politics.

Either way you look at it, after the House's & soon the Senate's support of bu$h's illegal & unconstitutional FISA Bill, they're ALL republiCON's any way!!! (Except for Bob Wexler, Dennis Kucinich, Feingold, and an arm-load of other "democrats".)

Texas Trail Dog   June 20th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

THAATS EXACTLY WHO YOU NEED OBAMA. BUT YOU GOT TO REMEMBER HE'S WHITE. HE JUST MIGHT NOT UNDERSTAND YOU SOMETIMES.

Jenna   June 20th, 2008 7:36 pm ET

Hagel, your doomed in politics if you do, Obama has not represented change, he represents a many other things that are hurtful to many Americans. Play into his 20 year history and all of his lies, you will be labeled as such.

There is now way that Hagel is going run with a socialist like Obama.

NoMccain   June 20th, 2008 7:33 pm ET

If Lieberman can turn his back on the Dems, then Hagel is allowed to join the winning team. In fact, all of the Republicans who want to switch, come on over. There will certainly be right wing conspiracy theorists to fill the seats when you switch.

That's an absolutely retarded idea. If he chose Hagel, won re-election, and went out with a bang, it would make a lot of the democrats want to vote for the Republican Hagel. The DNC would blast Obama for that.

That, and Obama would be selling out even more than if he picked Clinton.

Some of us in Nebraska really hated to see Chuck leave the Senate. We loved his honesty, loved his guts, loved his intelligence, but then there is no place in Congress for someone like him, now is there?

Tony   June 20th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Not a bad idea… Lincoln did it… and I'm sure Lieberman is on McCain's short list… would be interesting…

Personally I would prefer Gen. Wesley Clark (Ret.), but Gen. Clark might not have as much name recognition…

And to all you Clinton supporters spewing your hate: 1st, I truly hope you don't actually believe the tripe that you're posting, cause if you do, I feel sorry for you. 2nd, I'm a Republican and at this point I don't care who he chooses as his running mate, I believe in Obama, and he has my vote… even if, and I hope not, he chooses Clinton.

Leah DiMarco, Texas   June 20th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

NO Hagel.
The VP is one heart beat from being the president and we don't want the Republicans to have control of the White House again. Just say NO to Hagel as VP. He can be in the cabinet but not in the oval office!!!

Joseph, Los Angeles   June 20th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

I like Senator Hagel a lot, but he is still a republican. I'd perfer a Democrat as VP. Hagel in Obama's Cabinet would be a better alternative.

I think that this is a great idea! Go Obama 08!

TonyInKentucky   June 20th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

Webb is a better choice but this would be a very powerful GE ticket and anyone that pretends it's not is burying their head in the sand.

Hagel would pretty much wrap up the war of words for Obama.

Obama/Hagel is quite possibly an overwhelming landslide.

have hagel as secretary of defense.

Russell Hammond   June 20th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

Regardless, picking Hagel as VP would almost seal the Presidency for Obama. McCain would have to counter by selecting a very moderate (almost liberal) VP and that's not going to happen.

Americans want a centrist government and want out of Iraq and elsewhere. Most of us have had it with extremism.

Richard   June 20th, 2008 6:40 pm ET

I still like the idea of an Obama/Hagel ticket. It would coincide with Obama's message of new politics, unity, and transcendence.

I would also be happy with Clinton, Webb, Bloomberg, Sebelius, Kaine, or Nunn as VP.

Although, I still think Hillary would make a great Supreme Court Justice and Edwards for Attorney General.

Unless Sen Obama could somehow guaranty that he would not die in office this would be a very bad idea. For Hagel would be the one appointing justices if Obama were to die.

people of nebraska take note - next election you need to send him packing or let him run as a democrat which is what he is!!! now all we need is for mccain to put lieberman on the republican ticket and we can forever confuse the electorate . this year promises to be a barn-burner with nobody knowing which way to vote! whichever team they need to be re-named and run as dumacans!

Jim Sedberry   June 20th, 2008 6:01 pm ET

Marxists for Obama!

Saad from NJ   June 20th, 2008 5:59 pm ET

We have suffered so badly in the last eight years and our future generations will suffer due to pure incompetence as well as malicious acts from some individuals in the Bush administration but we can't blame the entire republican party for it. There are good people as well as bad people in both parties.

I think Senator Hagel is a good man and him on the ticket will be a step towards uniting a country that is more divided today than anytime I can think of. Thanks to Mr. Cheney and Mr. Rumsfeld…..

MICHAEL J JIMENEZ   June 20th, 2008 5:58 pm ET

Yeah don't pick Hillary…I dare you

Clinton 2012

Kenneth M   June 20th, 2008 5:57 pm ET

CHUCK IS A GREAT AMERICAN. I AM NOT SURE OF HIS VIEWS ON HEALTH CARE BUT I AM SURE HE WILL ACT AS A GOOD COUNTER WEIGHT TO THE DEMS ON THE ECONOMY. HE CAN GET SUPPORT FOR DEM ISSUES AS HE KNOWS WHO FEELS HOW ON THE HILL. PLUS, THINK OF ALL THE GOP VOTERS WHO WILL FEEL VESTED IN OBAMA. IT IS SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT, I WOULD MUCH RATHER SEE HIM IN THE CABINATE THEN THE VP SLOT.

Nova   June 20th, 2008 5:57 pm ET

NOBAMA!

Mike   June 20th, 2008 5:56 pm ET

The main issue with Hagel as VP is that the vice president is generally going to run for president in the future. If Obama is a successful President, it could land a Republican in the white house in 8 years.

Susan - TX   June 20th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

Sen. Chuck Hagel is a free thinker. I came to admire him as one of the only Republican Senators that had the guts to speak up and tell what he believes to be correct and true.

Both Senators Clinton and Obama, when asked if they were to choose a Republican running mate, who their choice would be. Sen. Chuck Hagel was the response from both.

Yes, it is hard to believe there is a decent Republican out there. Sen. Hagel is not another Bush butt kisser.

You owe it to yourself to find and listen to some of the new clips of Sen. Hagel giving speeches about our troops. He has my complete admiration.

I'm voting for Barack Obama and to have Chuck Hagel as his running mate would only sweeten it.

Rob   June 20th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

Scary. Very scary. Very, very scary. Goodbye America. Hello Obamaland, where history begins the day he's elected.

CHANGE   June 20th, 2008 5:50 pm ET

Anita from Arizona ………….. I would be totally excited for a Obama/Hagel ticket. I hope he is on Obama's list. Now, that's change we can believe in………DITTO!!!!

Eric in MN   June 20th, 2008 5:49 pm ET

Wesley Clark should be the VP candidate. But Sen. Hagel, you are welcome to come over from the dark side now that you have seen the light. We need more Democrats!

C.Jones   June 20th, 2008 5:49 pm ET

I DON'T think that Obama is so "short-sighted" as to take a republican as a running mate. It certainly doesn't take a rocket-scientist to figure out that……HEY!…..a repub. is just one ACCIDENT away from having another term in office! Just look at how well the last 8yrs. have been…..(or are you one of the 17% that thinks the U.S.A. is going in the right direction?)

ROTFL! Obama supporters who'd rather have a pro-life, pro-gun evangelical on the ticket with Obama than Hillary! Talk about hypocrisy!

Andrea. California   June 20th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

boo.

canuta   June 20th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

I've always had the utmost respect for Sen. Hagel. This life-long, 3rd generation Chicana Democrat would welcome him.

Phil, FL   June 20th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

Smart man - someone needs to ask him if the Republicans plan a "war or terror emergency" in order to sway the voters in November.

Politics of fear have ruled too long - it's time for it to end.

Interesting   June 20th, 2008 5:42 pm ET

first time a Republican wants to side with a Democrat - talk about watching your back Obama

You would be safer with Clinton

LOL

Marissa Calumno   June 20th, 2008 5:42 pm ET

I really don't know why there is such a tremendous "cross over" to the Obama bandwagon. Me, I just registered to the Republican party this week as my cross over gesture and distaste for someone who is good with words but empty on achievements. Like Obama's "presidential seal" the presumptive presidential candidate is just full of flair and projection of grandeur and hot air but I have yet to see something solid that he has done or has promised to do for this great nation. Being a junior senator from Illinois is really not that kind of experience and credential I am looking for in a man who I vote to lead this nation.

david,baltimore,mamryland   June 20th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

Nothing against Chuck Hagel but the only policy position he has in common with Obama is opposition to the Iraq war.If he were to become president his economic and social positions are diametrically opposed to the positions most democrats. Why would they vote for him? A cabinet position perhaps but th esuccessor to Obama? I dont think so and I dont think he is even being considered.

pam Eugene OR   June 20th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

HUH?
Isn't he a Republican? I agree Bush is not too bright but there are issues other the the war this election.
Does he support universal health care?
Lower taxes for working poor?
Equal opportunity for women and a host of other issues.
We all need to remember the VP is a heart beat from being President! There is a reason I am a registered Democrat.

Phil-Little Rock   June 20th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

Mimi De La Cruz for OBAMA   June 20th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

WE LOVE HAGEL AS A REPUBLICAN OR DEMOCRAT.

CHUCK HAGEL IS AN AMERICAN FIRST.

WE SHOULD SPEAK ILL OF ALL EVIL, BE IT

REPUBLICAN, DEMOCRAT OR FAMILY MEMBER.

THAT USED TO BE CALLED INTEGRITY.

WE NEED TO START GROWING SOME OF THAT

INTEGRITY IN OUR POLITICS AND HOMES.

Left Brain ... Please Speak   June 20th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

I could get behind Hagel as VP … he'd be on my top 5 list.

Anonymous   June 20th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

I think adding Hagel to the Democratic ticket would be as erroneous a judgment call as a Clinton supporter voting for McCain. It just doesn't make sense when you consider core values.

Darth Vadik, CA   June 20th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

Of course he would,
he's the one good Republican

Well...   June 20th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

I like the idea of Chuck Hagel. if there was every a true "unity" ticket, this might be it. What better way to unite the blue states and the red states of the country.

Herman in LA   June 20th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

Not a bad choice change your affiliation to democrat and your in…lol…

Patrice E. Oakland, CA   June 20th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

I think that Sen. Hagel would make a great VP. He has a good relationship with Sen. Obama, even though he is a Republican. It would be a great way to show bipartisan….it will scare the mess out of the GOP.

Republican for Obama   June 20th, 2008 5:32 pm ET

I guess it won't come as any surprise that as a Republican, a veteran and an Obama supporter, I just found my favorite VP running mate for the Obama ticket. And yes, just found it, sue me! Nobody has stood out as a strategic advantage and/or diverse enough selection until now.

Make no mistake, I will vote for Obama regardless, but this ticket would be my absolute dream team.

Good man, great American.

A Democrat.

NoMccain   June 20th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

This is either political suicide, or a surreptitious Republican tactic to get on the inside of a real winner.

LBowie   June 20th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

Wow!…. This is becoming so interesting. It is like a loud scream when a republican expresses his position to consider running as a VP on a democratic ticket.

Enlightened Voter   June 20th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

I am an avid Obama supporter but I would welcome him, think of all the repub votes we'd get cause Hagel is a dem in sheeps clothing.

JIM...TX   June 20th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

NOT a good idea. Thats a stretch to the "reach across the aisle" ideal. There's too many talented an smart Democrats that could lend themselves well to the ticket. If after Obama's in the White House an wants to appoint a Republican to a position that would be fine but as for now their agendas and any influence they might have on policies of the President are something we don't need or want. Their influence the last 7 + years has done nothing good for the country!

Anita from Arizona   June 20th, 2008 5:27 pm ET

I would be totally excited for a Obama/Hagel ticket. I hope he is on Obama's list. Now, that's change we can believe in.

Jaun   June 20th, 2008 5:27 pm ET

This is one of the most unifing ticket…more than any Obama/Clinton ticket. THIS MOVE WILL DOUBLE THE SUPPORTERS OF SEN OBAMA ANY DAY. BECAUSE I'M A REPUBLICAN AND I AM VOTING FOR SEN OBAMA.

Jaime   June 20th, 2008 5:24 pm ET

Do not overlook the fact that he, Hagel like Hillary are/were Republicans and can not be trusted…
