The Obama campaign debuted a new logo Friday that bears a striking resemblance to the presidential seal. Photo credit: AP, White House.

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) – Presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama sat down in Chicago Friday morning to discuss the economy with visiting Democratic governors, but all eyes were on the Illinois senator’s podium bearing, what might be described as, a quasi-presidential seal – a new Obama campaign logo.

The seal includes the same bald eagle as the actual presidential seal clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons, but instead of a shield covering the center of the eagle’s body, the Obama version displays the campaign’s trademark “O.” Unlike the Presidential seal, which includes the words “Seal of the President of the United States” around the circumference, “Obama for America” and “www.barackobama.com” grace the top and bottom of Obama's.

Finally, just above the eagle, in Latin, are the words – “vero possumus” – which translates to “yes we can,” the oft-heard chant at Obama rallies.

It remains to be seen how the new seal will play in the campaign’s quest to win over working-class voters.

What do you think of the logo? Your comments below.

Rudy NYC   June 20th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

At least they were smart enough not to make it green, so that video artists could have a field day like they did to McCain. Blue is an easy color to work with, but not as flexible as green.

I think it needs a second color in it though.

M. Dodds   June 20th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

I think the "fake seal" is totally inappropriate and in poor taste.

Freida, NYC   June 20th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

This is scary, he even wants to change the American logo-seal, by replacing it with his name. Americans please wake up and do not vote for Obama. Are these the kind of changes you really want.?He will turn this country into a Muslim sect, Just wait and see.

Brenda of Saginaw ,Michigan   June 20th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Obama can win those battle-ground DEM states without the help of Hillary.
Hillary needs the help of Obama to pay her sagging bills, loans etc. This is how terribly Hillary managed her campaign. I guess Hillary and her bitter followers need to beg Obama to come their help!!!

Bottom line, call on McCain to help retire Hillary's debts, loans…!

Sara   June 20th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Wow! He might as well announce his Extreme Makeover team and reveal his remodeling plans for the White House! America has never seen such an arrogant candidate in its nation. Most men have a desire to lead and feel honored to do so … BO thinks he's entitled to it and knows better than anyone else. What has the leadership of this nation come to???

Supporter   June 20th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Jose Gonzalez   June 20th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

I think it is very creative and also has some sort of subliminal message, it is like preparing the people to get used to see the Presidential Seal when when Barack Obama is giving a speech. Personally I believe that reinforces the perception that he could be the next President of the United States.

Mrs. Rayford   June 20th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

I love it!!!! Yes we can!!!

NObama   June 20th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Rather than an eagle, Obama should have an ostrich or chicken on his seal. This man is a joke.

Gabrielle, SC   June 20th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

I like it… No big deal to me though. I'm sure the comments are going to pour in about how arrogant he is for having it, but honestly I like it. I think its cute. I don't see how a seal is supposed to impact your decision to vote or not vote for someone. I don't even think that that is the purpose of it….

Kirk, DC   June 20th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

I have voted for him in the Primaries against the advise of a friend on the hill who knows him and tells me he is condescending and arrogant. Ihave tried very hard to listen to him and believe in what he has been saying and promising but…. when I saw the seal, I had an almost visceral negative reaction. It is not only premature but gives me quite the perception of elitist. This time, he may have gone a little too far.
I guess I am back to being undecided.

So what is the presidential seal patented or something?

Cue the PUMA Packer and their "isn't he arrogrant rant 3…2…1…"

CNN, what happened at the conference, anything ideas of substance exchanged or was the new logo so mesmerizing?

Narive -- San Diego   June 20th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

This is a brilliant move by the Obama campaign. Everything about this campaign is fresh and new. I can feel the Change all ready.

Peter E   June 20th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Arogant, pretentious bumm.

Delldude   June 20th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

I'm surprised it hasn't a Muslim Caracture of some kind instead of an Eagle, and letters printed in Arabic on top of that. But you know how the UPPER CRUST has to be a bit different.

Besides he DID SAY "CHANGE" and you'll get plenty of CHANGE that'll be the only money you'll have too.

George M. Allen   June 20th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

The seal is terrific. The Obama campaign is a Mac to McCain's very early PC.

Telluride, Colorado

Mary from Westport CT   June 20th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Bob   June 20th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong thing but the article says the circumference reads "Barack for America" where the photo clearly shows "Obama for America". Perhaps CNN is trying to get their articles up a little too quick…

Peter E   June 20th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

So, when Hillary talks about winning she's being 'arrogant' but when Obama jumps the gun and pretends to be president already it's called 'visionary?'
There is no change… it's the same old hypocrisy!

Beltway Insider   June 20th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Nice logo. Not really a news story, but whatever.

Let's see how all the Hillary/McCain crazies try to twist this around into something more than it is.

Let the pathological lunacy begin…

Ruth Bell   June 20th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Comment about the Logo. The Logo is just a logo and should not resemble the Presidential Seal. This is another Obama attempt to belittle the traditions of the United States of America, our Nation under God, and he should develop something entirely different.
He doesn't like our National Anthem and is making every effort
to undermine our traditional American beliefs.

Tommy N   June 20th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

"Vero possumus" is intense! Latin is a totally retro language, I hear.

JT   June 20th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Seems like the same old political tricks as usual from Obama. I thought he was supposed to be above typical politics. This guy is the quintessential politician. When are people going to realize that??

Stop Obamunism '08

G12   June 20th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

This is kind of a non-story.
If I were Obama and this turns into a big deal I'd just stop using it.

There are bigger issues like a war that is killing and maiming people,
an economy spiraling out of control,
inflation,
people losing their jobs,
rich people get richer while poor people get poorer,
loss of civil liberties,
people flooded out of their homes,
hurricane victims in Louisiana who still haven't been paid,
no national strategy on energy that the american people can point to,
government officials that have tortured people in our name and refuse to take responsibility for it,
and a government/economic system/culture that places making a buck over anything else in the world.

I think a seal on a podium pales in comparison.

Senator Obama, President wanna-be is going a bit far I think with his new campaign logo. His approval of this new "logo" tells this voter that he thinks he has it wrapped up, and has started packing his bags for 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue! The Presidential Seal is unique in itself, and is reserved for the sitting President and NOBODY else!
To authorize a close facsimile of the Official Presidential Seal and to appear as a candidate in front of it, simply put is shameful to say the least! Senator Obama should know better!!!!

Lisa   June 20th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

I think it's presumptuous, arrogant, and disgraceful. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but it seems there are just some icons and symbols that shouldn't be altered or personalized in that way, especially for a presidential campaign, unless it's intended as satire.

Peter E   June 20th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

You know, if Hillary did this the Obama supporters would scream foul, talking about how arogant she is, pretending to have won already, not waiting for people to cast their votes. "Ooo, but it's Obama. Look how presidential he looks. He's being a visionary!"

Again, I say - cockiest most arragont person I've ever seen. He is totally unbelievable. I cannot believe people white or black or whatever fall for his lie after lie after lie. You people aren't interested in what happens to the US - you just want a half-black person in there. And i reiterate - he is half black/half white - just doesn't have his head on straight. More and more his true colors are showing and they aren't pretty.

ANd one more thing - all you Obaminators have said HRC supporters were idiots, crazy, etc for saying they would not vote for Obama and would vote for McCain if Obama did not choose her as VP. Now I can't tell you how many posts I've seen that you Obaminators have said that if he does choose HRC you'll vote for McCain. Now get it straight - you talk out both sides of your mouth just like he does.

Now CNN - go moderate (or claim that comments have closed) You're as pathetic as he is.

pallas   June 20th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

This is has been an election where the issues are bigger than ever (war, economy, housing crisis) and the talking points have been more trivial than ever.

I support Obama, think that the seal logo is a little over the top. If he keeps doing what he is doing he'll get the real deal so why improvise?

I can just see this logo getting dissected six ways from the middle…

oh yeah and the fact that the political system allows corporate interests to inject so much money into political campaigns that no candidate really represents the people when he or she sits in front of a presidential podium to speak to the people or a gaggle of reporters.

Diane   June 20th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

The logo doesn't represent who Obama is. He's not for all Americans.

JD   June 20th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

All hail Barackus Obamus Maximus. Or, just "possum" for short!

Anonymous   June 20th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

I think the logo is great. It's what Obama represents, change.

Jokiro   June 20th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Thats really cute strategy. Obama for President 08

kingsley   June 20th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

He changed his Logo because McSame stole his previous Logo. is the media trying to spin this?

JB   June 20th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Don't like it. Seems presumptive. And I am a fan.

Drop it.

And now HRC is asking Obama to pay off her campaign debts?

Why? This woman is nuts. And unfortunately he is going to cave. The Clintons are a disease. Ah ha, you have the Clinton dude!!!

Love it. Although I believe "vero possumus" would be closer to "in truth we can"

Toni   June 20th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

You have got to be kidding me!!! I think it is very presumptious, and quite frankly, it offends me. I'm undecided, but I think this shows a candidate that is quite full of himself and that the race is over. It sends me a little more the other way now.

Gee, Barack, I really like you, man, but this thing sucks!

Sandro, Alexandria, VA   June 20th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

It is a powerful logo which subconsciously reinforces the inevitability of Barak's presidency. In general he has top-notch visual image coordination / graphic design team, among many other things.

More importantly, I think it part of a well-planned motif that Obama is not just another presidential candidate, but rather game-changing leader who is on his way to redefine the US politics, leadership style and yes, presidency itself!

bye bye freedom   June 20th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

The democrats have outdone themselves this time.

This guy and his insidious propaganda is downright scary.

People are following this manipulative man, as if he were the messiah himself.

Such tactics are slick and sleazy and errosive.

linda hemmingsen   June 20th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

I think it is pure arrogance of him .He sure thinks he is great!but he is just another political flip flopper who takes people to court and then does the same thing with public financing.

Maroun B.   June 20th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Sounds a bit fishy… reminds me of that propaganda era in the early years of the twentieth century in Europe, or maybe of that movie "V for Vendetta". Now that the seal is tempered, I wonder what's next ?

Reggie - Texas   June 20th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

I love it. His campaign strategists understand how important it is to look presidential especially when so many ignorant people out there "can't see" a black man as POTUS. As a first time young voter in college, this election season has been extremely exciting. I can't wait to cast my third vote (I did the Texas two-step in March) for Barack Hussein Obama.
God Bless America and the Obamas (including Sasha in Mahlia)!!!

OBAMA '08

DB   June 20th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

The Obama campaign has used the Eagle in a lot the imagery on the campaign website: at top of the "National Voter Protection Center" link, in ther background of pages before they are fully loaded, and in other places as well. I think it's smart to incorporate American symbols into the campaign imagery, and other campaigns have done it as well. Almost all campaign colours are red white and blue (at least the good ones, NOT green), and stars and stripes are frequently used as well.

Linda Esen   June 20th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Freida, NYC; I guess u dont know much about anything; if he is a Muslim what ignorant thing do you have to say about Rev. Wright ????

Liz from Atlanta, GA   June 20th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

That is so awesome! I have never seen a more creative and smart campaign. His "get to know me" spot started today here in GA and I can't wait to see what he'll come up with next.
The clash between McCain and Obama can be easily seen from the footage of the two when they visited the flood victims in Iowa this week. McCain walked around the town, just like President W did. Obama rolled up his sleeves and filled sand bags with the people who were on the verge of losing their town. I like the idea of a president who is not afraid of hard work.

Obama '08

Jeff D, South Bend, IN   June 20th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Deny the arrogance? Hardly - he'll have the real thing in January 2009. Stating a fact doesn't necessarily make it arrogant.

Ray   June 20th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

I think it's very clever and stylish. Leave it to the Repubs and others to over analize this completly.

Then the one true leader is savaged into oblivion.

Then the path is clear for the takeover.

Independent LAWYER for Obama   June 20th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

I like the fact that when I saw vero possumus, I thought "truth in possums?' EXACTLY what we were looking for in a presidential candidate.

Actually though, I think we should be more concerned about how bored my candidate looks in that pic!

NCrich   June 20th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

What's latin for "empty your pockets"?..that is what should be above the eagle.

Jim in Muskegon, MI   June 20th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

You've got to be friggin' kidding me!

Jennifer C.   June 20th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

INSPIRED - the logo is packed with meaning and well designed.

Becky   June 20th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Obama is allowed to change his logo, and the colors are extremely different so he's not trying to fool anyone. Just giving himself a more Presidential Look. I'm sure people against Obama will jump at any opportunity to say, "Oh my gosh I can't believe his group is being creative. That's absurd!" Anything is better than McCain's green-screen from earlier in the campaign.

Chris   June 20th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Mark Webb   June 20th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

But why not keep "Yes we can"???
English has taken Latin place as universal language!!
Is there any linguist in the team?
If there is any, Obama should fire him as quickly as possible.

Speechless   June 20th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Can he get any more arrogant?

WMH   June 20th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

I like it, too! Obama 2008

Peyton Lingle, II   June 20th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

The Obama seal is "over the line." He is running for the highest political office in the land, not on the set of Saturday Night Live! It comes across to me as presumptive and arrogant. Please have a presidential historian research which past presidential candidates used a seal that was similar to the presidential seal before becoming president.

I think it is making a mockery of the presidential seal.

Ambika   June 20th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

That guy Barrack Hussein Obama thinks very high of himself in a very snobbish way. Hope all the worthy Americans feel he is light weight and teach him a bitter lesson by voting for Mccain and send Obama back to where he came from!! Enough is enough.

Jane   June 20th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Why did I first think of a dead possum when I read vero
possumus?

Barbara Ellman   June 20th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Many will find this seal presumptious and could very well present a real "elitest" image even for those not believing the description for Obama before. Bad thinking. We've worked too hard to present the "peoples man" to have some dumb P.R. idea to pull it down. Get rid of it!

David   June 20th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Well, I certinly do not like it.

Angela   June 20th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

this is TOO much! obviously Obama already has way too much money to spend on nonsense such as this . how about spending some money and effort to win the vote of the Hillary supporters such as myself. also, please explain your vote for the Bush- Cheney energy bill- Clinton and McCain voted no.

Doug   June 20th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

I am big Obama fan, but somehow this doesn't seem right.

Ula Nejad- Sacramento Ca   June 20th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

hahahahaha…….its getting really hilarious. Next would be finding his face replacing Lincoln or squeezed into rushmore…boy oh boy!

John Alexander   June 20th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

I think this is enormously disrespectful of the office of President.

It ridicules the seal by arrogantly inserting Obama's name and campaign logo into a symbol that has always represented the
dignity of the office of President, not the person who occupies it, let alone the person who aspires to it.

I've never seen such a stupid, sophomoric maneuver. He'd better
hold on to this seal because it's very unlikely that he'll ever stand behind the real one.

Rickey Camp   June 20th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

I voted for Obama in the primary. But now it seems that his campaign is becoming more of a personality cult. I will vote Libertarian this November. As for his new logo, old politics - an attempt at manipulating people.

Dems   June 20th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

He should have a logo with dollar signs flying out of a wallet because that's what we're all going to be looking at if he becomes president.

Rob   June 20th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Vero Possumus meaning "Yes We Can".

OK, this is cute and all, but just a little bit ridiculous. Obama is my man. Love 'em and all that. But you gotta stay humble. This is a little overly presumptuous for some to take. He needs to tone it down and get in office first. Leave the cutesy teen and 20 creativity at the campaign office.

Ian   June 20th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

He won't have to change it much come November.

Jools   June 20th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Love it! It's hilarious, actually.

Zach   June 20th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

I have been consistently impressed with Obama's design team. On his website, he has a different design for each constituent group's page under the "people" tab. I cannot remember the last candidate with such a recognized logo!

Mark   June 20th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

kingsley - I could ot agree more, since McCain took Barack's old logo, I wonder why all these people who say its arrogant, or they don't like think about that…

Was it not arrogant for McSame to take Barack's old logo?

Gee I wonder..

and personally I would like to see the logo in Color, although I like it.

I LOVE BARACK AND MICHELLE. MCCAIN AND CINDY DON'T HAVE ENOUGH LIFE IN THEM. WHERE'S THE ENERGY AND EXCITEMENT AROUND THEM? NOTHING

a presidential seal looks good on obama.

Bob Indianapolis, IN   June 20th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Nice logo! This country needs a rebirth after the slide towards facism that clowns like Steny Hoyer and the Blue Dogs have been perpetuating by caving in to Dumbya, the Clown Prince. The reign of terror is finally coming to an end!

Louis   June 20th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Obama and his antics looks like people are rooting on another would be hero who would later turn out to be obsessed with power.
Does the name Robert Mugabe ring any alarms?

generationsane   June 20th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Pretty gutsy.
His campaign is re-writing all the rules.
America needs everything new. Go Obama!

VERY OFFENSIVE   June 20th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

THE SEAL IS A SYMBOL OF AMERICA; OF THE OFFICE THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. IT IS NOT A BRAND. OBAMA CONTINUES TO NOT ONLY INSULT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, BUT OUR INSTITUTIONS AND NATIONAL SYMBOLS. IT IS OFFENSIVE TO MARKET THIS GREAT AMERICAN SYMBOL AND USE IT AS A CAMPAIGN MARKETING TOOL. THIS GUY IS NOT ONLY STUPID, BUT HE OFFENDS ALL THAT WE HOLD DEAR TO OUR HEARTS. VOTE MCCAIN AND WE CAN END THIS SELLING OUT OF AMERICA.

Sweetie   June 20th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

It is deceitful on many fronts……. Starting with the use of the official eagle from the presidential seal. Your not the President Yet Mr. Obama…….. Oh Excuse Me that should be Senator Obama Right……… Hope you all get the point here……… from the play on words……….. but thats it isn't it, it's a play on Senator Obama already being as good as elected president.

Emma   June 20th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Great idea! Senator Obama is turning out to be quite the campaigner. He has a very creative group around him and it shows that he is so far ahead of John McCain.

I don't know who would not support Senator Obama. He has shown that he is able to "think outside the box," a quality few people posses. Isn't it great to have a presidential contender who fits the bill?

Peter E   June 20th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

DeeJam - Los Angeles   June 20th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

This is what he's supposed to do. We have to be able to envision him as a president in order for us to make him our president. Some people still don't think he is capable. What makes any American capable? I believe it's leadership ability and the desire to make America better. Obama has both of those qualities. The seal only helps to send the message that he is ready.

Ray   June 20th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

People are starting not to like him now because he's too cocky? Please–enough with all the bickering. Obama has a better education than McCain, exercised better judgement on the iraq war, and has better family values. Obama is a man of substance. It's the media's obsession with him that's making him out to be a rock star. Dag, can he live (without you covering every single thing he says or does)?

Obama 08!

Here we go again...   June 20th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Oh how lovely, a phony baloney seal for a phony baloney candidate. Is this more of that "change" I keep hearing about?

Up next, changing other irrelevant stuff! Now let's take a look at the brand of varnish on this presidential podium…

Go Hillary   June 20th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

I wonder how much it costs? Oh that's right money is no object for the big O. I wonder where he gets all his money ??

Peter E   June 20th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Let the hypocrisy-fest of Obama supporters begin! If it were Hillary chosing such a seal they'd all be crying foul and telling everyone how arogant she is, pretending to be president already.

katiec   June 20th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Just like the person it represents.

JO   June 20th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Just shameful. A knock-off of the real thing. Why did he do it?

If he's so arrogant even before he's president, just think of how arrogant he'll be a year from now. Scary.

California Voter   June 20th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

A little presumptuous . . . . however, also a reflection of his whole campaign. . . and the media bashed Hillary Clinton by saying that she felt she was "entitled" to the presidency. Something about this whole election smells.

Joan Q.   June 20th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Oh enough with the "cocky" comments. He's taking an American symbol and using it for his campaign to show change for a better America. Also Freida, do you actually think Obama is going to turn America into a Muslim sect once he gets elected (and he will)? Everyone just needs to take a breath, look at the issues, and take a look at who has a better stance on the important issues.

Concerned   June 20th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Dear Freida, NYC,

Senator Obama is a Christain and you know it!. He is not, has never been, and will never be a Muslim. He is not trying to change the American logo-seal. What is displayed is his campaign seal.

Knoxville, Operation: NObama   June 20th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Vero Possumus, eh? "Yes, we can" use mindless gimmicks and empty slogans to deceive a country… well, maybe not the whole country… maybe only a little less than half of one of the two major political parties.

"Vero Possumus" wasn't even enough for the Obama campaign to close the deal in the Democratic Party. He paid off… er, needed supposed leaders of the party to carry him over the finish line.

Axelrod, if this is the best you got, then it will be easier for us–the true Democrats who know what the principles of our party are and will never forget them–to stop you than I thought.

We're coming to take our party back. Count on it.
