When the Obama logo and presidential seal collide

ALT TEXT

The Obama campaign debuted a new logo Friday that bears a striking resemblance to the presidential seal. Photo credit: AP, White House.

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) – Presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama sat down in Chicago Friday morning to discuss the economy with visiting Democratic governors, but all eyes were on the Illinois senator’s podium bearing, what might be described as, a quasi-presidential seal – a new Obama campaign logo.

The seal includes the same bald eagle as the actual presidential seal clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons, but instead of a shield covering the center of the eagle’s body, the Obama version displays the campaign’s trademark “O.” Unlike the Presidential seal, which includes the words “Seal of the President of the United States” around the circumference, “Obama for America” and “www.barackobama.com” grace the top and bottom of Obama's.

Finally, just above the eagle, in Latin, are the words – “vero possumus” – which translates to “yes we can,” the oft-heard chant at Obama rallies.

It remains to be seen how the new seal will play in the campaign’s quest to win over working-class voters.

What do you think of the logo? Your comments below.

    People, please stop.

It is not offensive to have a symbol that plays off of the presidential seal. These two candidates are not even the nominees of the party yet, but since it is obvious, we let them "pretend" until the convention.

One of these two candidates will be present. Saying that he is "faking it" is just absurd.

And to be fair, the seal is not a great seal of America. It is a great seal of our highest office, which is mostly unrecognizable by the rest of the world. We do not seem to complain when candidates (all of them) use the stars and stripes in a fashion other than the flag, and the flag is clearly more of a sacred symbol that the presidential seal will ever be.

If i ever needed more evidence that people are just looking for reasons to be angry, I have my second major fact. The first is that people were trying to use Obama's lack of a flag pin as a sign that he is unpatriotic. I'm totally sure that someone who uses a symbol, and doesn't wear a flag pin, is running for president just to piss us off and deface the process (note the incredible sarcasm).

Stop trying to nit pick candidates on issues that do not matter. A flag pin will not save our economy, and a seal is not going to have an effect on any of the other issues that our country is dealing with.

I'm begging you; if you are going to try and participate in the political process, drop the BS that does not matter. If you are going to obsess over this kind of stuff, please feel free to stay at home on voting day. I want someone who votes based on real issues, not superficial ones.

Brandon Hillary, that is an extremely racist comment. That's fine if you happen to prefer McCain, but, really, if Obama really had an extremist muslim agenda, don't you think that it would have been exposed in detail by now?

I am and have been an Obama supporter since January of '07, however I think the adoption of this seal was a misstep. I hope he realizes that this appears pretentious to a great many people and he decides to revamp it. I can't help but imagine a staffer asking Obama what he would want for a logo, and he says "Something Presidential." Well, I guess he got what he asked for.

Obama is the most egotistical maniac I never wish to see or hear as President of this country. He is mocking the seal in the worst possible way.

Several things recently have made me question if this is the right man. This logo is not appropriate. My love for my country comes right behind God and my family, and I do not appreciate anyone using symbols for their own betterment.

He is a pompus idiot who does not deserve to be the president of a country his wife in just now starting to be proud of. Was she not proud of America before when he was just a senator? was she not proud of America before when she had all the freedoms and rights that our military lays down their lives for every day? She does not deserve to be the first lady if she can not say she has always been proud to be an American. The fact that he has ripped off the presidential seal is a load of crap. What next a fake flag?, a liberty statue of his wife?, People are all upset about the Mrs. McCain cookie "scandal", lets get real cookies???? This is a much more of a Plagiarism than a cookie recipe.

    Vote McCain

Brandon Hillary, that is an extremely xenophobic comment. That's fine if you happen to prefer McCain and Hillary, but, really, if Obama really had an extremist muslim agenda, don't you think that it would have been exposed in detail by now? In reality, Obama and Hillary are much more similar than McCain and Hillary.

Brandon Hillary, I doubt you are democrate. It seems you are diciple of Rush Lumbah. You only know how to divide, scare and demonise people. But this time it is not going to work. We are sick and tired of division and scare tactics.

Well, a little over the top, self-aggrandizing, and presumptuous is my the impression. Bland and lacking in "pop" for a logo professionally created is the second.

I hope I don't end up voting for anyone based on their logo though.

Neither guy is much of a fashion plate either. Another reason to vote for one or the other down the tubes.

Perhaps one day we shall her substantive debate between the two of them on a wide range of issues. Then logo-gate can go where it belongs, straight to the bowels of the news cycle.

I am so proud to be affiliated with the Obama campaign intellects.
Have you ever seen such thought processes. They know what to
do. The seal is very nice. We are all waiting for someone to say
it's illegal. If God is for you Mr. Obama, who can be against you?
One person said that they hated Obama. Isn't that sad? Jesus
said, " love your enemies"..and Obama is not an enemy. He just
happens to be by his own account African-America. As you try to pray tonight, just tell God about the man he made and his mom named
him Obama. No demon in hell can touch Mr. Obama if God is
for him. We love you Obama!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
