MISSOULA, Montana (AP) — Sen. John McCain may be the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, but supporters of Ron Paul in Montana refused to abandon their candidate.

The group led an impassioned fight Friday at the Montana GOP convention, shaking things up in a failed effort to secure the state's 22 national convention delegates for Paul — who suspended his presidential bid earlier this month.

While the battle jazzed up a normally dull delegate selection process, Paul supporters could not muster enough votes to trump McCain's backers. In the end, McCain received all 22 delegates
despite a close vote, party officials said.

Earlier in the evening, Paul told the crowd that his support in Montana was the best he had received anywhere.

"Montana's been treating me quite well," he said. "The spirit is alive here."

The Texas congressman praised the Montana GOP for letting him speak at their evening dinner and for giving his delegates a chance.

"This is has been one of the best — if not the best — in the way we have been treated," Paul said.

Paul was not a typical GOP convention headliner. He criticized nearly as many Bush administration ideas, such as wartime spending and No Child Left Behind, as he did Democratic ones.

But he received a warm reception from the crowd anyway with a message heavy on cutting government.

"We are talking about the fundamental beliefs of the Republican Party," said Paul, in what he characterized as likely the last speech of his suspended campaign. "These are issues that are
important to me."

Paul's supporters said they would continue to fight for delegates at the national convention to honor the principles of the campaign, and as a way to continue pushing their ideals.

Paul finished second in Montana's Super Tuesday caucus — behind Mitt Romney and ahead of McCain, who came in third.

Nuts don't just write blogs. Some of them run for president! This is not a hate comment, because I like Paul. Actually he is the only real republican that was seaking the office. But honestly his continuing
Don Quijote charge is kind of nutty

Dr. Paul should be McCain's runnng mate. What a duo they would make.

saul, texas   June 21st, 2008 2:51 pm ET

Dr. Paul and his supporters need to pour themselves a stiff drink and face facts. The Republican party is gone. It belongs to the neocons and they are not giving it back. The neocons are counting on the misguided and ignorant American neo-nationalism sparked to life by 9/11. It is a block very easy to manipulate and that they will to their full advantage.

The welfare-state of the democrates is no better though certainly no worse, than the visions of Empire that animate the neocon GOP. Certainly, from a fiscal perspective, the neocons visions of Empire will be at least as costly as any welfare-state managed by the Democrats, except that instead of infrastructure and social programs, there'll be military spending and wanton American agression around the world. And for this what the American people will get will be for a few of us to get to call themselves "patriotic" and claim we are "defening freedom" — though it should be scant comfort while standing on the unemployment or been forced to live with relatives after a foreclosure.

Dr. Paul's effort was in the end a half-way try. We need a full try. We need is to have the free and the brave embody once again these characteristics and have a true break with the status quo — the dems and reps have become the two sides of the same coin and the coin must be discarded. It will take work. Certainly a lot more than sending our young men and women to kill and die around the world and claim that "we" are "defending freedom", or bankrupting the country by holding to the alternative fantasy that government can absolve people of every reponsability for their lives and communities.

It is sad that McCain is the nominee. Republicans were supposed to slect some one with brain like Ron Paul not war lords like McCain. Never mind they even elected Bush.

This is nothing compared to the mounting opposition from Clinton supporters, which will be unleashed at the Democratic convention in Denver.

What a shame that the Republican Party refuses to update its agenda and try to appeal to a broader base.

John McCane was a bad idea in 2004, he is even a worse idea now.

It's such a shame that Ron Paul, who really believes in keeping government out of our private lives is considered a gadfly. I too thank The Montana GOP for treating him decently and letting him speak.
I told Senator Obama's office that if he votes in Support of this disgusting FISA bill that I will vote for Bob Barr.
I mean it, Senator Obama!

A true PATRIOT.I agree with him on constitutional issues but his hands off approach allows big business to run over us.We need the EPA.etc. and others to keep us safe.Just look at the TOMATO FIASCO,TOYS FROM CHINA,BAD MEDS AND PET FOOD.

Obama/Ron Paul '08?????

Charlotte   June 21st, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Ron Paul is still making waves and must be a thorne in McCains side.
We have Obama, who is a liar and everyone should know that by now. He has lied about NAFTA, Campaign Finance, Rev. Wright, Tony Rezko, Father Pfleger, Selma, Trinity Baptist Church and the list keeps growing. The new Logo was the most arrogant display yet. Who does he think he is? I won't vote for him now, even if Hillary is his VP. He scares me more everyday. I wish the real Obama would please stand up. Hilter won his election by one vote! I do not trust him or his hateful wife. They listen to that hate filled church for 20 years and only left when it became a liability to his desire to rule this country. After the way Bush got away with everything, this congress scares me even more then he does. They will allow him to do as he pleases without oversight. I don't need the GOP to scare me, Obama scares me all by himself. I will write Hillary Clinton on my ballot in November unless he scares me even more, then I will vote for McCain

Jack in ND   June 21st, 2008 1:09 pm ET

Montana (along with North Dakota, Indiana, and Alaska) has been added to Obama's swing state target list.

I invite Montana voters to write in Ron Paul or cast a vote for Bob Barr rather than vote for McCain.

ARE-YOU-FOR-REAL   June 21st, 2008 12:57 pm ET

If is don't work out move on over to the Obama side. We will welcome you.

MaryL- Ca   June 21st, 2008 12:44 pm ET

Ron Paul does have a right to campaign for the election but will there be other states besides Montana that would take away votes for either Obama or McCain?

andrew mclaughlin   June 21st, 2008 12:16 pm ET

and we thought hillary supporters were in denial

Patrick of Canton, Ohio   June 21st, 2008 12:07 pm ET

Ron Paul needs to run as an independent. Neither John McCain or Barack Obama seem to want to uphold my rights above their personal ambitions.

Independent   June 21st, 2008 12:07 pm ET

TheTruthHurts   June 21st, 2008 12:02 pm ET

I couldn't vote for him, but ya gotta like this guy. He tells it straight, no chaser. Our economy is screwed and he knows it. He knows that all this fiscal and monetary policy from the rate cuts to the stimulus are just postponing the inevitable. He knows we should have crashed hard in 1991, but instead we dropped rates and created a housing bubble. Now we've dropped rates, killed the dollar and created an oil bubble in less than 6 months. Our debt-loving society will now have to pay up and it won't be pretty. We know it's true, but are too scared to face it.

America is not ready for his tough love, no intervention ways, but at least the guy is telling the truth.

Both McCain and Obama know most of this truth also, but they wouldn't dream of trying to win an election with gloom and doom pronouncements unless the doom was coming from overseas and not our own greed, arrogance and stupidity. No matter, the next president no matter who s/he is, will be in a world of hurt in the first 24 months.

Rich, Andover, MN   June 21st, 2008 12:01 pm ET

I am not sure what the fundemental Republican values are. The ones held by the cons or the Neo-cons? The ones of restraint or the ones of excess. The ones that respect individual rights or the one spys without warrants. The one that believe in the constitution or the ones that think the republican party is the more important. I could go on…

Harry   June 21st, 2008 11:59 am ET

What a great alternative to McCain. I wish people would take Ron Paul seriously. Doesn't the constitution, smaller government and fiscal responsibility matter to people any more? That's all he runs on and people would rather have someone like McCain. It's truly amazing!

Brian   June 21st, 2008 11:48 am ET

They need to get behind Barr 100%
Conservatives for Barr'08 It could happen!

Patrick   June 21st, 2008 11:47 am ET

Well at least this guy has some good ideas. McCain will just promise to fix it then pull a Katrina style failure.

M.S. Indiana   June 21st, 2008 11:46 am ET

Way to go Ron Paul !!!! Dont ever give McCain a inch of space, this is dead serious!

independent   June 21st, 2008 11:35 am ET
