Former Republican Rep. Bob Barr
Former Republican Rep. Bob Barr

ATLANTA (AP) — A fiery former GOP congressman who gained national prominence for doggedly pursuing impeachment of President Clinton has some Republicans worried he'll play spoiler in a tight presidential contest.

Bob Barr's Libertarian Party bid for the White House is the longest of long shots, but political experts say he may be able to exploit the unease some die-hard conservatives still feel about Sen. John McCain, the Republican nominee-in-waiting. Combined with the surge in turnout among Democrats during the primaries and a difficult political climate for Republicans, they see what could be a recipe for trouble for the GOP.

"Bob could be the Ralph Nader of 2008," said Dan Schnur, a GOP consultant in California who worked on McCain's 2000 campaign but is not involved in this year's contest. Consumer advocate Nader is
the third-party candidate many Democrats blame for helping George W. Bush narrowly win in 2000.

Rep. John Linder, a Republican who defeated Barr in 2002 after Georgia's Democratic-controlled Legislature redrew congressional boundaries to put the two lawmakers in the same district, said he
didn't think Barr would top 4 percent of the vote.

"But in some states that may be enough," Linder said.

Democrats seem gleeful at the prospect. Tad Devine, a Washington-based Democratic strategist, said Republicans "are crazy if they aren't worried about Barr."

"Undoubtedly any votes he gets come out of McCain's votes," Devine said. "He hurts them."

Barr, a former federal prosecutor, was swept into Congress with more than 70 other House GOP freshmen in 1994. An articulate, sometimes outspoken orator, he gained attention as the first
lawmaker to call for Clinton's resignation over the Monica Lewinsky scandal and was one of the House prosecutors who pressed the impeachment case in the Senate.

Barr also was known during his four terms in the House for his opposition to softening drug laws, including the medical use of marijuana, and his support for gun rights. He tried unsuccessfully to bar military bases from according witchcraft adherents the same accommodations as other religious worshippers.

Even after Clinton left office, Barr continued to pursue him. He asked congressional investigators to study the extent of White House damage done by departing Clinton staffers and tried to build
a "Counter Clinton Library" in Little Rock, Arkansas. He filed a $30 million lawsuit against Clinton, adviser James Carville and Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt for causing him "emotional
distress" in retaliation for the impeachment proceedings.

Some Republicans aren't worried about Barr's candidacy. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said voting for Barr is the same as voting for Democrat Barack Obama, and said he's confident most GOP
voters will understand that.

"No reasonable conservative is going to vote for anyone except McCain," Gingrich said.

Even so, Barr campaign manager Russell Verney said he expects Republicans to mount challenges to keep Barr off the ballot in a number of states, much like Democrats did to Nader in 2004.

Verney was campaign manager for H. Ross Perot, who rocked the political establishment with his 1992 independent presidential bid that drew 19 percent of the vote.

The Libertarian Party hasn't cracked 1 percent of the national popular vote in a presidential race. But it bills itself as the third-largest political party and is already on the ballot in 30 states, with petition drives this summer aiming at 20 others.

The toughest obstacles are likely to be in West Virginia, Oklahoma, Illinois and Washington, D.C., where ballot access rules are prohibitive, said Libertarian Party political director Sean Haugh.

Democrats also have had success knocking third-party candidates of the ballot in Pennsylvania, considered a swing state.

But Barr may have the most impact in his home state of Georgia, where he is still well-known.

In recent years, Barr has earned a reputation as an iconoclast.

A National Rifle Association board member, Barr has joined with the liberal American Civil Liberties Union against the Bush administration-backed Patriot Act and reversed himself on medical marijuana use, now lobbying in favor of it.

He said it is the unchecked growth of government that led him to abandon the GOP two years ago.

In the coming weeks, Barr plans to open a campaign headquarters in Atlanta.

"I think John McCain is going to have to battle for Georgia, a state that was a gimme for George Bush," said Matt Towery, a former Republican state lawmaker in Georgia who runs a political
media company.

Georgia and its 15 electoral votes have been expected to go Republican on election night, and McCain spokesman Jeffrey Sadosky said he remained confident they still would.

Still, the enthusiasm Obama has generated among Georgia's large black population continues to worry McCain strategists. Far from writing off Georgia, Obama has a campaign team registering voters and is airing a TV ad in the state.

Barr scoffs at talk that he will play spoiler, saying he is in the race to win it and it won't be his fault if McCain loses.

"If Senator McCain is not successful, it will be because his message and his vision did not resonate with a plurality of the voters," Barr said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Barr also hopes to tap into the zealous grass-roots network of Rep. Ron Paul, who recently dropped his bid for the GOP presidential nomination and pledged to support "Libertarian-leaning Republicans." Paul, a Texas Republican who ran for president on the Libertarian Party ticket in 1988, drew
hefty campaign contributions online, but did not win any primaries.

Paul supporters said they're giving Barr a look. Some are skeptical.

"We're waiting to see if he's deliberately moving toward Ron Paul's principles to be politically popular," said Marlane O'Neill, a Paul supporter in Atlanta.

Barr is an idiot. , why is he even allowed to be on the ticket.

Just what we need another nut, we already have one in Obama.

The Republicans are worried about spoilers NOW? Hell, they ran pro-Nader ads across the country in 2000. Hypocrites.

Hey, conservatives… Vote Barr… Please! :)

Milo   June 22nd, 2008 12:36 pm ET

Barr is half the reason Georgia will be close this election. The other half is the approx. 600,000 African-Americans that are currently eligible to vote in the state but are unregistered. Bush won the state in 04 by 600k votes, and with enough Republicans jumping ship, it could prove to be an expensive election season for McCain, especially if he has to buy adds in a "solid red" state like Georgia.

Hans-Erik Iken   June 22nd, 2008 12:37 pm ET

I wonder if Barr is also going to see if he can get GWB indicted for his crimes as vigorously as he tried to pursue Clinton.

Lets see if this guy has real principles or if he only plays for the stands when it suits him.

As for his program: he is more of a conservative then McCain, but I seriously doubt if that is what the people want ot need right now, another conservative in the White House to mess the country up more.

Charlotte   June 22nd, 2008 12:38 pm ET

He failed to impeach Clinton and cost the taxpayers millions of dollars in the process. He and others will no doubt effect the out come of this election as a lot of people are unhappy with the choices available on both sides. I wish Hillary would run as an Independent, that would really make this year, up for grabs.

Go Bob Barr. If not for Obama, I would have voted for you!!! You are way better than McCain in my opinion.

I wanted to comment on a post I saw in an earlier thread from Bill in Fl.

I have been doing a lot of research on John McCain and also on
Obama.

I can tell you without hesitation I will Be voting for John McCain since
Hillary is no longer in the race.
Obama is a two faced lying piece of crap. This may seem harsh words, but is what I truly believe. I work in an industry where I see and
talk to hundreds of people everyday and 99% agree with me.

Ok Bill, so Obama is a lying piece of crap??? I have seen your ranting postings all over the blogs. You have convinced me now that Senator Obama is a piece of crap because you say so, no facts, but I know you are a well informed voter. I'll be sure and show it to all of the people I know that are leaning towards Obama. I'm sure they will be just as swayed
as I am, piece of crap indeed.

In defense of Senator Obama, I heard that he was under sniper fire when he became a lying piece of crap, and that he was so traumatized by that sniper fire, that he went to the hospital, and they turned him away as he didn't have insurance, thus turning into a piece of crap. I'll send him a copy of your post so he knows what you think, I'm sure he'll drop out.

McCain has no bid to spoil. He's such a pathetic candidate, even the republicans don't want to talk about him! They're just setting Barr up as a fall guy for McCain's loss instead of blaming it on the most boring, uninspiring, no-themed candidacy in the past 50 years.

Indeed Barr should spoil McBush's bid. Barr is a true conservative. He would end the war in Iraq and he is not in the pockets of the big corporations like McBush. The Republican party does not like or respect McBush for very good reasons. He is not a respector of the Christian voting block. He will continue to send good jobs to China to please his corporate masters, one of whom he is married to. He has no clue how to deal with our sinking economy. McBush is more popular with female Democrats who are mad at Obama ( for no reason), than he is with conservative Republicans. All true Republicans should vote Barr to send a clear message to the GOP to return to their base of support.

FactCheck   June 22nd, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Ridiculous… McCain's bid is spoiled by his own flip-flopping on critical issues, his ridiculous compliance with the failed Bush policies of the last 8 years and a complete lack of understanding of modern economics policies. Joe Biden once famously said that every sentence Guliani said consisted of "a noun, a verb and 9/11″. Well, McCain's talking points can be summed up by a noun, a verb, and "I was a POW".

Newt Gingrich is a sad, sad man who has his head buried deep in the ground. There are a ton of dissuaded and disillusioned conservatives who are quite upset that Ron Paul was not the supported GOP nominee. And, many aren't willing to deny their integrity just to keep Obama from the White House.

This is going to be sweet for us dems indeed! Go Obama!

I Used To Be A Democrat   June 22nd, 2008 1:58 pm ET

First off, any Democrat who blames Nader for Bush's victory is just plain stupid. You can't blame a third party for your own candidates loss. Not every one believes in the two-party system and those people who say that, are in fact fascists.

Secondly, Democrats better be concered about libertarians like Ron Paul and Bob Barr, because these candidates are appealing to liberals as well. Not everyone who is inclined to vote Democrat believes we should have a bigger government and more taxes. Lots of Ron Paul supporters are former Democrats too.

Even though Bob Barr is not the ideal candidate like Ron Paul, I say give the libertarians serious study and thought. This country was founded on libertarian ideals, not socialism.

Hillary should find some way to get herself on the ballot- and a NEW party. God knows the democrats are now the raving lunatic left wing fringe. We need a party of the people and for the people.

Not a socialist agenda nor a neo-fascist agenda.

STILL… now with NO HRC on the ballot… McCain will do less harm over 4 years than the lying, hypocritical Obama who presents himself one way but actually does exactly the opposite.

In short, regardless of his lofty oratory, change and hope or unity has nothing to do with it. Obama will and does trash and bury anyone or any ideal JUST to steal his way to the presidency.

In short, regardless of his lofty oratory, change and hope or unity has nothing to do with it. Obama's words or pledges or promises or statements of conviction mean nothing. Time and again he simply shifts positions and does a complete turn about. And he makes a new speech casting his lies as a principled stand, cloaking his backtracking in a mantle of evolving rhetorical justification.

Obama will and does trash and bury anyone or any ideal JUST to steal his way to the presidency. His campaign has been the best at doing a hatchet job on the competition. NOT honestly, on the issues… but by using hatred and race to agitate his supporters.

They aren't spoilers! There are millions of us who've opened our eyes and mind and seen the demopublican establishment for what it is: a corrupt, self-serving, dirty, greedy system. We aren't voting for candidates that don't represent our values.
Don't believe me? Look at Obama's short record of voting FOR the reauthorization of the controversial Patriot Act, FOR continued financing of the Iraq War. But is that how we vote? For he who campaigns best…even if dirty is the best way to steal the nomination ?

Or do we vote for the best leader… which, by the way is HRC.

And Obama is hard to beat in the pretend arena.

These blogs were full of Obama worship and Hillary hate from the Obama camp. No HRC supporter ever got posted…even though we did not resort to vile, filthy, vulgar, personal insults and ethnic or gender put downs. CNN never posted us until it became clear that the obvious bias was hurting Obama and just unifying the HRC supporters AGAINST voting for him.

Not so smart or educated as you think you are if you cand not see that Obama is using every psychological tool at his disposal to sway, influence and control you people.
He uses pre-emptive strikes- puts it out there before "they" do, to diffuse their critism and then twist and spin to make "them" the bad guy.

His followers then buy into it because it works… not because it is true. The Clintons are racists. Right, and I am the post-racial man of change.

HRC is a war monger. Right ,and I am the prince of peace.

Hillary is responsible (?) for NAFTA so she can't be for changing it and making it better. Right, and I will kill the hateful NAFTA and free trade with it.

Quick the race card…. I'm losing ground.

We saw him do this with Hillary and now he is doing it to the Republicans.

Race card as sheild and as weapon. This is marketing at it's best, it is up to the consumer to decide if this hype of hope will kill the hope of a true leader.

I see that Obama will bring out a new rope a dope a day just to get the crowd excited. No harm done, he would say, but cause some excitement in an otherwise dull news day. Give me a break another idiotic attempt at levity.

Either Obama is the world's biggest fool or a complete idiot for putting a neo-presidential seal on his podium. If he can change the seal of the president, what makes you sure he won't change the name of the president's house. Give me a break! I like the name of Our White House. No change please.

I, for one, hope the closest he gets to the White House is the outhouse. He doesn't belong there as he is a serial quitter and a girlie man.

Second, did you see his gloves? Nice and frilly don't you think? What a comical cartoon character he is becoming.

How can anyone take him seriously. He is a clown. I saw new pictures today of sand baggers. I noticed not one was wearing gloves or girlie gloves like Obama likes to wear.

Give me a good old fashioned candidate with our values.

Symptoms of the Obama sickness sweeping the land:
The symptoms are:

Inability to think clearly.
Inability to differentiate reality from illusion.
Feverish activity boardering on mania.
Paranoia of any criticism of Obama.
Hearing loss (the truth gets lost somewhere)
Hallucinations.

I clap and want to jump up and down. This is the best news that I have heard all morning!!! This. . .this. . .mental patient is going to run for office. This is a tribute to what makes America great. Just when I was starting to think that I would have to endure "four more years of Douchebag," here comes Turdburger to give the insane asylum that is the ignorant portion of the GOP - who are truly afraid of the future - a candidate to believe in. Thank you, Barr, for throwing your hood, um, hat, in the ring.

Obama is king,
this I know
because the great Obama told me so.

The nation rejoices
this I know
Obama eliminated all our choices.

Gingrich, you need to sit down and observe what's going to happen. We do not think America is ready to stay in Iraq for hundred years. We strogly desagree with the idea of killing our sons and daughters in Iraq for OIL.

"No reasonable conservative is going to vote for anyone except McCain,"

I guess that makes me an unreasonable conservative, a conservative who thinks we have no business in meddling in the affairs of other countries. A conservative who thinks we, a a nation, ought to live within our means. A conservative who thinks that the Federal government ought to respect the Constitution that expresses the political philosophy upon which the country was founded, and respect the rights guaranteed by that document to the country's citizens.

Actually, no reasonable real conservative is interested in voting for anyone except Ron Paul or those who think like him–which is why, absent a return by John McCain to real conservatism, the conservatism upon which the Republican Party was founded, I do not intend to vote for him.

its a good thing   June 22nd, 2008 3:17 pm ET

All I can say is it is a good thing that all those ignorant, stupid, uninformed, inbred racist, old geezers, white old ladies, redneck blue collar workers are not needed by the "new" democratic party of hope and unity and change.

For a while there I was worried.

I think the haters for Obama sent them all the message of exactly what they were worth and what they could do with their ballots.

Monica for Obama in Indiana   June 22nd, 2008 3:26 pm ET

It don't take Barr to spoil McCain's chances. McCain is doing a good job of that by himself. Who said "Wisdom comes with age"

Go get UM! Obama

The fact the Libertarian Party would run this hack shows that even a third party run would be bought and paid for courtesy of the Corporate Oligarchy. I guess gun lobbies and the neocons, will be funding his campaign. You think somebody with an inkling of intelligence buys any of this tactless charade anymore. We have no real choice anymore, about our elected officials. They are tapped by the old rich families; aka Committee of 300, Club of Rome, Opus Dei, Bilderberg, Trilateral Commission, ect before we ever get to see on them on center stage. Secrecy, Profiteering, and back door dealing with Secret Societies, Big Banks, Think Tanks, and the Military Industrial Complex have completely stolen our system of government. They've already looted our coffers, now they want complete autonomy in every aspect of our life. Your House just voted to allow Big Brother to see every financial transaction you'll ever make in your life. Here's something to ponder.
In 1934 the .18 ounces of silver, roughly the amount of silver in a quarter back then, was worth $0.25, interestingly enough the same price for a gallon of gas . That same amount of silver is worth $4.09 or the average for a gallon of gas today. Now the Fed wants to use cheaper metals to back our currency, because it costs too much? Fiat currencies kill economies by design. Wake up people. Check out G. Edward Griffen's: The Creature From Jekyll Island it is a must read book for any American, without a clue.

Hopefully Nader will run and play spoiler for the liberal side of the ticket to balance out the election.

Barr is everything nasty about the far-right all rolled into one person.

Let him rant! he will just remind conservatives that they have moved on and do not want to go backwards with Barr! :(

BV   June 22nd, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Go Bob!!

aware   June 22nd, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Come to think of it Barr might remind Americans that they don't want an extremist of any stripe - far-right or far-left. :)

DT   June 22nd, 2008 4:00 pm ET

I'm really sick of this implication that voting for Barr (or any third party candidate, e.g., Ralph Nader) is somehow "stealing votes" from a Democrat or Republican candidate.

Can't we credit those voters for truly knowing what they want from a Presidential candidate, and being unswerving in their desire to choose whom they believe is right? So the candidate may not be elected –that doesn't mean that a voter shouldn't choose the candidate closest to their ideals.

It's time to stop treating American voters this way, and time to treat their choice as sacrosanct. Independent views are one of the great things about this country –unlike many other places (e.g., China, Zimbabwe) we have the privilege of being allowed to hold those views without fear of reprisal.

Kris In Atlanta   June 22nd, 2008 4:02 pm ET

I think the GOP is pretending to not be afraid of the serious challenge they face with Bob Barr, specifically in fast-growing Georgia. Barr doesn't give in to pressure very easily, and he could care less about the Republican party that helped him lose his House seat a few years back. Bob Barr could potentially swing Marietta/Cobb county in suburban Atlanta his way, due to him still being popular in that conservative-leaning area. Not a big deal? Marietta/Cobb Co. has about 8-10% of Georgia's population. That could sway any election.

Obama 08

Cornel Scor   June 22nd, 2008 4:07 pm ET

Barr (with 6% in a recent state poll) is already hurting McCain in Georgia, where Obama is now competitive.
In the end, Barr will probably only get 1 or 2% nationally; but his votes will all come at the expense of McCain.
Remember, McCain is now only getting about 85% of the GOP vote; the remainder will most likely split this way: vote for Barr, stay at home or even some will vote Obama.
