From
McCain adviser Charlie Black.
McCain adviser Charlie Black.

FRESNO, California (CNN) — Sen. John McCain distanced himself Monday from comments made by a senior campaign adviser suggesting that McCain would stand to benefit politically from a terrorist attack on U.S. soil.

In an interview with Fortune magazine, McCain senior adviser Charlie Black said that the Arizona senator demonstrated his fluency in foreign policy and security matters following the assassination of Benazir Bhutto in December of last year.

Bhutto’s killing, Black said, was an “unfortunate event.” But, he argued, McCain’s “knowledge and ability to talk about it reemphasized that this is the guy who's ready to be Commander-in-Chief. And it helped us."

Asked if McCain would stand to benefit from a terrorist attack on the United States, Black answered: “Certainly it would be a big advantage to him.”

Campaigning in California, McCain shook his head when asked by CNN about Black’s comments.

“I cannot imagine why he would say it,” he said at a press conference. “It’s not true. I’ve worked tirelessly since 9/11 to prevent another attack on the United States of America. My record is very clear.”

McCain cited his work on the Senate Armed Services Committee and his role in creating the 9/11 Commission in describing his efforts to stop terrorist attacks on American soil.

“If he said that, and I do not know the context, I strenuously disagree,” McCain said of Black.

On the day Bhutto was assassinated, McCain seemed to suggest the calamity could offer him some political benefit.

“I’m the one with the experience, the knowledge and the judgment," he told CNN's Dana Bash on December 27. "So perhaps it may serve to enhance those credentials.”

Why do the Republicans want us to Die…be afraid….be ATTACKED?
ALL for an election? It not just okay that 3,000 people died on 9/11..it's not just okay we've gone to war and 163,000 (+) of our young people stand in harms way and 4,000 (+) have died for a war that should not have been authorized, it's not just okay for these people to get on TV and mislead us, its not just okay that so many people died in flood waters in New Orleans, Its not just okay to introduce people like Rev. Wright to the public based on a few sound bites, that may not reflect his views, but can be controversial if taken out of context….IT JUST NOT OKAY FOR THE LAST 7 Years that have put us in a recession, caused a major housing problem, and put over 300,000 fellow Americans out of work.

What do these people want from us? Why do they continue to target our biggest concern another Attack to change our perception on he can lead us better? THIS IS JUST A JOB.

carlo   June 23rd, 2008 8:45 pm ET

I don't see how anyone can justify these comments. Obama's advisor Samantha Powers was fired for calling Clinton a monster, even though a lot of people agree. What Black said is what a lot of people agree with; however, the media called for Obama to fire an UNPAID ADVISOR. Black is McCain's SENIOR ADVISOR, yet the calls for his firing have yet to surface. McCain has had more gaffes, misstatements, blunders, flip flops, and out right lies since this election started, yet the media seems hypnotized by his baby back ribs or something, because he's never called on any of it. Then Obama detractors accuse the media of being in the tank for Obama. I don't understand how anyone could say that after the media spent a month discussing Obama's pastor at a church he rarely attended.

I just wish people would just come out and say why they're really not voting for Obama. I'd feel better. I appreciate honest bigots, racists, and rednecks. I'm from the South, so I guess I'm used to honest racists.

Vig   June 23rd, 2008 8:45 pm ET

Gee, maybe he was taking a tip from Bush's play book.

John G   June 23rd, 2008 8:44 pm ET

It was a trick question.

if he said no it would seem like he doubted McCains abilities in a crisis and if he said yes it gets spun into McCain wants another terrorist attack.

The only correct answer is "No one benefits from terrorist attacks, however, if one were to occur it would simply be another means by which Senator McCain could prove his experience trumps Senator Obama's blind, naive optimism."

Jamie   June 23rd, 2008 8:42 pm ET

Leslie Sanchez is so one dimensional she is the worst annalist CNN has. If someone like Charlie Black says something as crazy as he did and then apologizes for it he should be commended, but if someone from the Democratic side said anything like that the world would be coming to a end. I like to pride my self for listening to every side, even though i am a die hard Democrat, most Republican annalists get there point across with out demonizing the other side. but Leslie Sanchez represents all that is evil with the republican party AND SHES ONLY A ANNALIST!! its people like Leslie Sanchez, Charlie Black, and McCain that help the people really see what the Republican party represents. BIG MONEY, BIG BUSINESS, LIES LIES LIES!

Brian   June 23rd, 2008 8:41 pm ET

"how many terrorist attacks have the us suffered since bush went after them. how many sleepless nights have you lain awake wondering if the will attack again.like it or not if some unfortunate terrorist attack should occur i sure wouldn't want obama trying to talk them to death give me a man not someone who rides other people's coattails"

How many American's died from terrorist attacks on the Democratic watch? How many more Americans died in Iraq compared to 9/11? Why hasn't Bin Laden been caught??? Bush has all the might and power of the greatest country on Earth and our allies and we can't catch one man????

Dark Side   June 23rd, 2008 8:32 pm ET

Here we go again………Fear - Let the good times roll. No wonder this election of 2008 won't be like the others were. SHAMELESS!

James, Redlands, CA   June 23rd, 2008 8:28 pm ET

It's amazing how few McCain supporters have logged on to make comments about this insight into the Republican mindset. Maybe it's because Black did in fact tell the truth. It relates so well to all of the terror alerts we had with Bush.

People wake up. The Republicans want you to live in fear.

The people trying to excuse Black's comment would have been calling for Obama's head for not firing the guy 2 seconds after the comment was made.

This is insight into the people that McCain has surrounded himself with.

Sad. But true.

Sally from Cali   June 23rd, 2008 8:23 pm ET

Why not frighten Americans into keeping the Republicans in power.

Domestic terrorism has been used to oppress Americans for centuries: immigrants, women, Blacks. Why not use it to control other voting groups: Whites, men, West Virginians, Ohioans, Floridians, etc.

Why not?

Brian   June 23rd, 2008 8:08 pm ET

awww John don't be to harsh he is just speaking the truth…… you would benefit from Americans dying just like Bush did…….. That is why you want to keep our boys and girls in Iraq right? So they can die for your advantage!

If only you can convince people stying in Iraq is for the good of everyone.

seanm   June 23rd, 2008 8:04 pm ET

Wow, the McCain campaign has really lost its marbles lately. He just can't seem to do anything right anymore. This quote is absolutely disgusting. Black should be immediately fired!

Julie   June 23rd, 2008 8:03 pm ET

Mr. Black - I doubt you're truly sorry. I think you're sorry your words weren't taken as they would have been in 2000 - or 2004.

Fear mongering - just one of the many reasons I won't vote gop.

Glenn   June 23rd, 2008 8:01 pm ET

So typical of McCain and the people he surrounds himself with. Black is a disgrace and now McCain has disgraced himslef by not firing Black as a senior advisor. The longer the Presidential election goes on, McCain will more clearly show himslef for what he is….a warmonger, a flip flopper, a man who cheated on his first wife, a Senator who used his power and influence to keep Cindy out of jail for stealing drugs, and an old man who has lost his bearing. McCain is totally ignorant in matters of the economy. His Viet Nam POW hero status and military experience do not equate at all with the abilty and intelligence to be Commander in Chief. We have a history of Presidents who were failures who had military experience. With McCain, you continue four more years of Bush's eight years of failures both at home and at war.

Canadian for Obama, Toronto   June 23rd, 2008 8:00 pm ET

I just don't understand how mcsame could benefit from terrorist attack? can someone explain this please!

Linda31   June 23rd, 2008 7:46 pm ET

Are you sure you don't know why he said that? Maybe because that's something you guys discuss in our senior advisor meetings. Please, we all know that you think something like that would benefit you. I'm sure this too will go away, because all things negative against McCain doesn't stick.

The New Karl Rove is Born   June 23rd, 2008 7:37 pm ET

We've had 5 years of this crap. Terror Alerts hyped when a political agenda needed to be accomplished. Is Charlie Black, the new Karl Rove and Friends that like to use the American real fear of being attacked against us to win this election.

NO NOT THIS TIME. NOT THIS YEAR. BUSH HAD HIS TURN.

John McCain should fire this man along with Phil Graham if he wants to show he can break from Bush tactics.

Obama 2008 is now my man.

Chris, American in London   June 23rd, 2008 7:32 pm ET

Charlie Black career ender! Pack yer bagz & go home, you just lost your job for telling the truth. Or at least what you thought was the truth. How could someone so well paid be so…. THE EMPORER HAS NO CLOTHES ON. Bye Bye Republo-bots, we won't miss you, you left us w/a lot of work to do so get out of the way now.

not a bitter hillary supporter. just a staunch one.   June 23rd, 2008 7:21 pm ET

wow. The raving idiots really are out today.

Eric   June 23rd, 2008 7:18 pm ET

The reporter asked the question. The answer was merely pragmatic.

Had It been a democrat asked if Barack would do better if an attack occured the answer likely would be no. Why? because he has no understanding of terror and no understanding of poor policy dealings with our lurking enemies. Barack buys his favors. He learned from Rezko how to do that.

California Girl   June 23rd, 2008 7:06 pm ET

This is what they do (Republicans)! This is why John Kerry lost, the Republicans will lie just to get back to the White House and put fear in the American people. Democrats will unite and beat those war mongering evil doers. Charlie Black should be fired. 4,000 plus of our innocent young men/women have been killed by these lies that the Republicans have brought forth. No more lies, no more Republicans! It's time for our country to be led by a democratic administration for the people; not just the rich and well-connected.

Abe Schenck   June 23rd, 2008 7:06 pm ET

So, he's castigated for being honest? Republicans are the party of terror, is this news to anyone?

RYAN   June 23rd, 2008 7:04 pm ET

Republicans and politics of fear. It is not going to work this time around.

obama=underhanded liar   June 23rd, 2008 7:00 pm ET

I'm still voting for McCain. NOTHING is as BAD as obama.

Me   June 23rd, 2008 6:54 pm ET

"Asked if McCain would stand to benefit from a terrorist attack on U.S. soil" The key word is he was "asked" by the reporter if it would benifit him. He wasn't calling for an attack. The fact that you can read so much into so little is humorus. And yes if attacked it would be an advantage because he has the experiance to deal with it. I'm a true Bush hater but we need experiance with McCain to deal with and change the US and not some fairy tale of change with an idealogogy that just won't work..

Johnny   June 23rd, 2008 6:50 pm ET

WOW the GOP has officially hit rock bottom. So lets rephrase this for folks living in "the deep south" . According to this guy death of innocent Americans would greatly benefit the GOP Presidential Candidate.

Shame on you McCain!!!!

Voting for fear   June 23rd, 2008 6:47 pm ET

There you have: the fake patriots are wishing that some of their brothers will die, so that their right wing man keeps the power.

Well, Bush surely profited in 2004 from the 9/11 attacks in 2001…
PNAC even told in 2000 that a new Pearl Harbour would transform the army for the better…well, they got what they hoped for…

G. Gabelli   June 23rd, 2008 6:40 pm ET

If, god forbid, there were a terrorist attack before the fall elections it would only demonstrate what a failure the Republicans have been at the helm of this country for the last eight years.

We Americans understand that Bush/Cheney et. al. have NOT succeeded in capturing Bin Laden, did NOT pursue the terrorists in Afghanistan, and have made us LESS safe by waging a destabilizing war in Iraq!

Americans cannot be fooled any longer by the Republicans playing the "fear" card.

We are no longer in the paralyzied mind set post 9/11 in this country. And YES we folks out here understand a new political reality when it comes to "who can keep us safer; McCain or Obama?"

The answer is simple, obvious, and not as complicated as pundits are making it; a Democrat will keep us safer.

An unfortunate terrorist attack before the elections will vividly show that Republicans cannot be trusted to keep us safe. A Republican President only created more terrorists around the world because of the Iraq war, and McCain and his party have failed miserably after 8 long years!

Quincy   June 23rd, 2008 6:33 pm ET

I hope the American public has gotten a little smarter and won't fall for the same tactics used from 2001 to 2008.

Marc PDX   June 23rd, 2008 6:31 pm ET

Dude, you fell for it! Let it be a lesson for both campaigns - ambush journalism will be a prevalent tactic through November. Mr. Black, you are the poster child for being a pidgeon now.

Upon Further Review   June 23rd, 2008 6:28 pm ET

McCain has some real cockroachs in his camp,he may as well resign now.

Sickening   June 23rd, 2008 6:25 pm ET

You all notice that McSame's "criticism" was more of a touting of his resume. Why doesn't he put politics aside at a time when his advisor summons the images of 9/11 all over again and just say, "I strenously disagree, I am sorry he said this, and he will be fired." It's not always about you McBush; sometimes it is about the American people.

Trotamundo   June 23rd, 2008 6:24 pm ET

Why is John McCain a hero? For having survive his plane going down? What or how that enhanced his fellow comrades in arms or benefited the US war effort? For having lived out the war, without risk to his life in the Hanoi Hilton were they even wanted to release him for being the son of a US navy almiral? How did they learned that? For having said he only came to love America when was deprived of her? he said it several different times.
The real heroic thing to have done was to accept release and go back to fight, but I guess it was safer been in protective custidy.

Mcshame   June 23rd, 2008 6:21 pm ET

there you are mccains supporters this is the typ of president you will vote for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tigerakabj   June 23rd, 2008 6:19 pm ET

I knew someone in the rethug party was going to slip sooner or later. Folks, we are fighting a war on terror indeed. It is the repugs, always has been. Bush calling everybody the axis of evil, when he has demonstrated that he is who he condemns.

I can't wait until President O initiates Nuremburg trials Round 2 against these war criminals and puts them away permanently. After all, he is a civil rights lawyer.

kim   June 23rd, 2008 6:19 pm ET

To think that a comment like that is OK is beyond comprehension to most outside of politics.

It show's how out of touch they are. Hillary did it last month with the Bobby Kennedy statement.

We Need God on our money and Prayer in our hearts

OBAMA 08   June 23rd, 2008 6:18 pm ET

ANYONE TALKING ABOUT A TERRORIST ATTACK ON THEIR NATION SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. AFTER WHAT WAS EXPERIENCED, THIS MAN SHOULD NOT BE TALKING LIKE THIS. IT IS VERY SUSPICIOUS.

William   June 23rd, 2008 6:17 pm ET

Everyone knows that a terrorist attack would benefit McCain. That doesn't take a great deal of genius to understand. However, no one thought the McCain campaign would be dumb enough to come out and say so. When you need the tragedy of a terrorist attack to inspire people to vote for you it signals how pathetic your stance is on the issues.

bravedave   June 23rd, 2008 6:17 pm ET

Thanks so much Charlie for motivating me to send another contribution to Obama.

Cathy   June 23rd, 2008 6:17 pm ET

I'm an Obama supporter and I don't think Black meant anything negative by his comment. The question was a leading question and I understand what Black was trying to say even though I may disagree that McCain is better for our country. Don’t let fear tactics win this election for McCain.

Needless to say OBAMA '08!!!!

bill pike   June 23rd, 2008 5:57 pm ET

i just cannot get over the fact that you have missed the point. WE ARE IN AN ILLEGAL WAR THAT IS KILLING U.S. TROOPS FOR NO REASON. Progress??? Have we solved the religious aspect of the cause and effect of this country, or the entire middle east??? didn't we have the crusades a few years ago and did england solve these religious factors??? MAKING PROGRESS in what??? we should get the hell out of there and let the country manage itself. when they kill each other after we are long gone is that progress???

i am a vet. my dad was an officer in WWII, uncle tommy jones a west point grad and war hero in korea. and i say—there is no pride in winning a criminal offense and to talk about progress is like bank robbers talking about how they help their families and even some scraps to the poor.

this is out of whack that you would write about progress when bush and the entire administration needs to face a Nuremberg trail just like after WWII–why were the german's on trial–they invaded places they had no business doing and tortured prisoners and and and, but there was progress??? they invented the Volkswagen for all of us. our space program. DON'T WE EVER LEARN.???

final note, a thousand years from now these countries will be at war with each other and also religious wars within their own country. AND SOME IDIOT WILL WRITE ABOUT THE PROGRESS IN IRAQ, OR IRAN, OR WHEREVER.

Like Bush, Only Older   June 23rd, 2008 5:57 pm ET

Charlie Black, who is a renowned lobbyist for the worlds worst dictators is conjuring up this fear-tactics?!

It just shows that at this time when the american economy is in the tank, gas prices skyrocketing and morgage meltdown is on the upswing, the republicans cannot run on the issues, but would rather invoke another terrorist attack!

the republicans feed off of evil terrorist attacks & wars that do us nothing but misery and pain at the gas pump!

Danel   June 23rd, 2008 5:49 pm ET

If McCain demonstrated his fluency for foreign affairs issue: How come he can't even diffirentiate Shiite and Sunnis? Forgot what country he was in? Voted for the war in Iraq? If that's foreign policy experience to you I'll go with common sense and judgement anytime.

Independent-woman-4-Obama   June 23rd, 2008 5:48 pm ET

What else is new from the far-right-fear-and-hate-mongering Republicans, sadly, that's what they REALLY think but only Black was honest enough to say it.

Of course, we wont see this story talked about 24/7 like the Wright story was! And what Black suggested IS HIDEOUS COMPARED TO THE COMMENTS OF WRIGHT!

Disgusting comment, but no surprise!

gl   June 23rd, 2008 5:46 pm ET

Rea, Obama is only scary to you becasue he is black. I would like your comments better if you told the true why you are scare of Obama.

SC   June 23rd, 2008 5:46 pm ET

How can half of you even say anything? Half of everyone's comments are unintelligible and lack proper grammar, not to mention spelling is horrendous. Many of you uneducated Americans are putting down McCain for what? Putting down Bush for what? Because it's the POPULAR thing to do, do any of you even have any idea about any of the candidates' policies? Haha I doubt it. All you so called DEMS…do you have any idea what Mr. Obama really wants to do? Raise your taxes? Hmmm, maybe many of you should do some research before you open your mouths. You just don't want McCain because he's a REPUBLICAN, not for what his voting history is or his proposals on social and economic policy. You just want to get on the DEM wagon. RESEARCH first and then post something that's worth while to read.

Chris Lee   June 23rd, 2008 5:44 pm ET

The question asked was: Would your campaign be helped by a terrorist attack? Yes. Obviously, would have been the appropriate answer.

Would you WANT an attack?
"I’ve worked tirelessly since 9/11 to prevent another attack on the United States of America," he answered.

But this is curious: the second question was not the one asked.

Things that make you go hmmmm.

TerryDo   June 23rd, 2008 5:42 pm ET

Mr. Black was asked a dumb question to begin with.

"Asked if McCain would stand to benefit from a terrorist attack on U.S. soil,.."

CORRECT ANSWER: No One Would Benefit From Another Terrorist Attack on America.

What a stupid question to ask someone in the first place!

Kenneth   June 23rd, 2008 5:42 pm ET

John McCain had nothing to do with The murder investion of Mrs Bhutto so why bring it up. Oh by the way Obama would not nor his poeple would try to benfit from that sitution . Bringing a knife to a gun fight means that if you come to a fight with us then we will bring stronger means to fight you off. that is keeping it real.

I do not understand why it is a double standard for McCain and Barack cannot didtance himself from people he disagree with and it is talked about it for months. Dont youidots know that McCain is a war monger that is why he stated we could be in Iraq for a hundred years. He looks like a pretty comfortable POW in the pictures I saw. I wonder if he said cheese when his picture was taken. Cindy should keep her mouth shut about Michelle , dont open your closet door. Once and for all I wish these hypocrits would lay off her for I am 76 years old and this is one of the times since John Kennedy I have been proud of this country. How soon we forget the picture of Emmet Till hanging from a tree, those little children burned in the church , dogs attacting people whehn they were just askinf for their equal rights, Medgar Evers little children and Martin Luther kings children w weeping at their fathers funerals. My Great Grand mother's mother was sold as a slave and the white plantation owners raped our women. Were you peoud of your country Miss cindy? yes your husband went to war it was his duty same as my father and brother did many of my frinds ans relatives did John you were one of the lucky ones all we have to remember are the dog tags that were given us. I still ont think that qulifies you o be president of anything , Maybe the liars club. Brack never said he would take money from lobbyist he only sad he would take under consideration. Dont be so quick to call names you have been flip floping since you started this vendetta of yours. You dont need any money any way your wife is loaded.stick to the facts unless you cannot remember what they are.

Lamont in Detroit   June 23rd, 2008 5:37 pm ET

Hmmm….

Typical republicans. The notion that an attack would help is very similar to when Reagan made sure the hostages weren't released until after he beat Carter in 1980. He used american hostages for political gain. Of course more war would benefit McCain. His party knows this - his advisor was too stupid to let it slip.

The real issue is that the White House is the last great bastion that white males have controlled. They are fearful that anyone else that doesnt fit this persona will dilute the latent supremacy in this country. What they don't understand is that all Americans want is equality remiss of skin tone. The fear conservatives will continue to propagate is the notion of fear - us (white) vs. them (non white). That is what they have always ran on and always will.

Mike   June 23rd, 2008 5:37 pm ET

Yes McBush did not want his advisors to say it out right. Just allude to it like he has been doing all along. Playing on Americans fears is all McBush has got. McBush says he has the experience. Unfortunatly his experience is all bad.

Jim   June 23rd, 2008 5:36 pm ET

How does one "distance himself from his senior advisor" if not to dismiss him from duty? McCain probably planned the comments himself. Textbook fear mongering. Let me ask you this America: are you ready to show some spine and elect someone who will tell us the truth and lead without scaring us into submission? I sure hope so.

Jason of Indianapolis   June 23rd, 2008 5:32 pm ET

This is one of the reasons I can't vote for McCain, it's easy to see that his policies are that of a war monger.

Bob Barr is a true fiscal conservative who believes in small government and states rights.

I need a true conservative, that's why I'll be voting for Bob Barr.

Well thanks John, you kept us safe. The average Amreican is going to be broke and homeless but thanks solely to your efforts, we will be safe.

Sad but true…that people are so gullible that they would be intimidated by political propaganda to vote based on fear

Roofin Reality, Houston, Tx.   June 23rd, 2008 5:09 pm ET

Oh yeah, and to those Senator Clinton supporters (voters),
this is what you want when you vote for Senator McCain, right?
Come on PUMA voters, it appears now that the Iraq war was somewhat, shall we say, made up?
And now we have a critical campaign manager saying that an attack on us would be beneficial to McCain?
Wow. If you really want that, I just hope you aren't part of any attack because it would be unfortunate for your family members to have to pick up the pieces from you being hurt by an attack that in an indirect way, you voted for.

Get off the pot and understand what's at stake here people.

Rick FL   June 23rd, 2008 5:08 pm ET

I have never cared for uber lobbyist, Charlie Black, on McCain's staff and do not trust them either with our national security. Their warmongering mentality is bound to cause more of the same problems we've seen these past 7 years.

I want a smarter efforts with our military this time.

Republicans UNITE AGAINST LIBERAL MCCAIN! VOTE BARR. PLEASE FOR GOD SAKES VOTE BARR LOL

Sick and tired of being sick and tired   June 23rd, 2008 5:05 pm ET

It's just like that little slip of the tongue when McCain said the Iraq war was about scuring oil supplies…..i.e. the war was for oil…..which has gone up by over $111 a barrel since we invaded Iraq. Then McCain said he was talking about the First Gulf War, then he said he didn't mean to be talking about either Iraq war.

Doesn't anyone question this stuff? It's so friggin' obvious it makes me sick. McCain is a liar, and a fake….and now his campaign thinks that terrorists help them.

Ok, so here's the slogan: McCain's campaign would like help from some of his terrorist 'friends'. Bush, that's your cue to set the wheels in motion.

TPH   June 23rd, 2008 5:05 pm ET

Charlie Black… Looks like the stuff they discuss internally slipped out to the public. Woops!

Anyone would be crazy to think that the reminders of terror will get stronger as the election draws closer. Of course John McCain is going to inject fear into the population any way he can.

Jason   June 23rd, 2008 5:04 pm ET

I can't believe any Hillary Supporter envoking McCain. Yuck. I think we should just ignore the ridiculous whining. The primary is over. She lost the POPULAR and Electoral vote. If we counted popular vote in those caucus states she would have lost too. And MI, who knows the actual totals.

I totally forgot about the primary. Beating McCain and the racist war mongers is much too important for this country.

Scott   June 23rd, 2008 5:01 pm ET

Republicans require fear to block peoples logic. Republicans = fear votes, Democrats = logic vote. Choose where your mind stands.

The GOP is trying to play the fear card, but Americans are starting to fear the desperation and reckless nature of the GOP.

jim in DC   June 23rd, 2008 4:59 pm ET

why would you put Obama 08/12? Wait until he actually serves a term to decide if he deserves a second. It just shows that you are immature and dont pay attention to the issues.

JustAnObservation   June 23rd, 2008 4:59 pm ET

It was his answer to a pointed question:
"Asked if McCain would stand to benefit from a terrorist attack on U.S. soil,.."

He probably should have answered it more diplomatically. Then again, if he were an adviser Obama and said Obama would stand to gain from an attack, Obama supports would be yelling, "telling it like it is" or "keeping it real" or some other biased comment.

Rea   June 23rd, 2008 4:58 pm ET

In the Chicago Tribune today: June 23 2008
Obama made an outrageous statement:

He meant it as a joke, but when Barack Obama recently parodied a famous line from "The Untouchables" he also dredged up the reputation of his longtime home as a place that is rough, raw and unlikely to breed reform.

"If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun," Obama said during a Philadelphia fundraiser, explaining the Chicago-style approach to hard-nosed politics.

Obama is risky and scary.

If this is McCain's Senior Advisor all better be wary. I thought McCain was War Hungry, now I've learned he also has Advisors who are also War Hungry and likely have the same ideals! MORE than Scarry~!

Remind me as to why some Americans are voting for McCain?

joe hollins   June 23rd, 2008 4:55 pm ET

well how about that, so should we think they care about the 4000 plus killed in Iraq when they think it would benefit them to see 3000 U.S. citizen killed in an attack? this is the worst thing i ever heard how could i vote for some one with this mine set.

Shawn, Takoma Park, MD   June 23rd, 2008 4:54 pm ET

McCain can only run on fear because he personifies stagnation, failed policies and a past that we don't want.

Obama personifies genuine hope, progress and he represents the future and a better America.

This election is a no-brainer. Anybody who wants more GOP insanity is mentally deranged.

Celeste   June 23rd, 2008 4:53 pm ET

Americans have been fed the potion of fear and most of those have fallen into a state of lethargy. They need to wake up before its too late. ENOUGH ALREADY!!! Stop feeding on the hype. The Republicans will stop at nothing to win. And this is coming from someone who whole-heartedly supported G. W. Bush - I am no longer under any illusion, my eyes are wide open.

REPUBLICANS USE FEAR TO WIN DONT LET THEM DO IT AGAIN DO THE RIGHT THING VOTE OBAMA

Mark, B'ham., Al.   June 23rd, 2008 4:49 pm ET

If we did have another attack from Al Quada is Barrack silling to invade Pakistan to get OBL. I doubt it more than I doubt Barrack being a fiscal conservative. If we rely on Law Enforcement to go after terrorist not treat it as a real war than we do lose. They want to kill us so we should want to oblidge them by killing them so they can get their virgins. If we do not use special ops tactics against the terrorist we will not defeat them. The only way the Republicans benefit from a terrorist attack is if it happens while the dems control the White House, the Senate, and the House. Then there will never be democratic control of any part of government again because they will treat fighting terroist as their hero Bill did as a law enforcement issue.

CLINTON 08 VP   June 23rd, 2008 4:47 pm ET

TO MCCAIN: TOO MUCH VIETNAM IS WHAT MAKES YOU TOO MUCH IGNORANT TO BE PRESIDENT FOR LOSING TO MANY BRAIN CELLS WHILE YOU WERE A PRISONER, PRETTY MUCH LIKE YOUR DADDY BUSH ONLY THAT I THINK THAT HE WAS BORN WITH ONLY A FEW BRAIN CELLS… THE POINT IS THAT YOU CAN'T BE PRESIDENT BECAUSE YOU'RE WAR-SICK AND THAT MAKES YOU THINK ONLY ON WAR, DEATH, WAR, WAR, WARWARWARWAR…

Nina De Ponca   June 23rd, 2008 4:47 pm ET

Oh John … you know what he is saying ….

Namely that some Americans, wrongly give you points for having been a prisoner of war and a long tenured senator.

They don't take the time to evaluate whether either of those have any bearing on what you know, how well you've demonstrated good judgement, how proactive you are in addressing national security threats.

The sad thing is, if there were an attack, there is a segment of the population that would run to embrace you despite the fact that you've never really done anything, from a proactive, leadership perspective to mitigate a terrorist attack.

You'd get voters for Sizzle … not Substance.

Patriot   June 23rd, 2008 4:41 pm ET

Keep Americans under educated and ignorant.
Make Americans cynical about government.

In this way, it is so easy to prey on Americans' fears.

Americans, stop allowing your lives to be govern by fear!
No third term for Bush!

A leader with vision would know that oil execs can be asked to BE PATRIOTIC, and roll back their excessive over pricing, which is harming low income working Americans.

If young Americans can be investing lives, limbs and mental health in Iraq and Afghanistan, the SURELY oil execs can ALSO demonstrate some PATRIOTISM and roll back some of their exorbitant profits.

Who said oil execs and other business people cannot also be PATRIOTIC?

blgeorgia   June 23rd, 2008 4:41 pm ET

It's beyond my understanding why anyone would think that McCain is a maverick or capable of being commander-in-chief. As Senators Hagel and Webb both said recently, he really has no idea about military matters. Anyone with his record at the Naval Academy would never have been allowed to be a pilot if it were not for his family connections. And after he got the chance, he had several accidents that demonstrated he should have never been there.

Use your brain   June 23rd, 2008 4:40 pm ET

I am pro-Obama and anti-McCain, but really, does anyone seriously believe that John McCain doesn't have the best interest of the country at heart when it comes to matters of national security? It is really stupid to try and use this against John McCain, he is many things, but his patriotism can't be seriously questioned. George Bush was the last (and maybe only) President that put America in harms way just so he could get re-elected.

mike   June 23rd, 2008 4:39 pm ET

we know the same now that we did in 04. fear worked then, why is everyone thinking it won't work in 08? i think we got what we asked for in Bush, we will stay the course with McCain, or we will have to make some serious deep rooted changes (which we won't like) with Obama.

The comments that this guy made have been made all over the media by the plethora of commentators, democratic analysts, republican analysts have all said that McCain is presently "the underdog" but that things could turn around if there was a terrorist attack.

The republicans are counting on this type of thinking by democrats that is based on emotion rather than logic or facts like the people who say that they are going to vote for McCain because Clinton lost. That's not logical and neither would be voting for McCain just because there was an attack. He has no more experience in foreign affairs than Barrack and has proved to be far less knowledgeable about the facts surrounding the war on terror. Service in Vietnam make for a man who deserves respect as a serviceman. It does not make for a expert foreign affairs experience

StacyGA   June 23rd, 2008 4:34 pm ET

The troubling part of Senator McCain's response is that he didn't say "I;ll speak to Charlie Black about this immediately, and until further notice, he's not speaking for my campaign."
That would've sent a clear msg, but I'm guessing that McCain is looking for all sorts of advantages since he's down 6% in most polls (discounting Newsweek because 15% is just way too much in my opinion).

Course, now, didn't former President Bush meet some Iranians in London in 1980 and had them hold the hostages until after the election that fall where Jimmy Carter got blown out by 8 million votes?
So, would anyone put it past the Reps to "orchestrate" such a devious plan for politcal gain?

Frank   June 23rd, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Looks like John McBush is geeting advice from Karl Roves operatives. So, it's not just Bush / Cheney people that rely on such extremes. Just another reason to drive a stake into the heart of Republican, neo-conservative dogma in this country.

Remember McCane saying a few weeks ago that American casualties in Iraq were ok as long as we have them under control and win the war?
This is blatant corroboration of McCane and his warmongers finally accepting again that the loss of American lives means nothing to them as long as they win the White House.
Look McBush can be the straight talking express but I know it was no mistake from his campaign spokes person who echoed their plans publicly for about the 3rd time in 6 months.

“I’m the one with the experience, the knowledge and the judgment," he said on December 27. "So perhaps it may serve to enhance those credentials.”

wow that statement sounds almost evil

On US soul………..

Bad comment………… right ideology.

BARACK THE VOTE PEOPLE……………….. :)

Chris from NY   June 23rd, 2008 4:24 pm ET

Isn't that what they are hoping for. It may have worked for them in the past. It may not actually work for them this time around.

LB   June 23rd, 2008 4:23 pm ET

I guess McCain forgot to tell his advisors that what they discuss in private is not to be told to reporters. McCain may secrectly want another attach but the American people don't. So does that mean that McCain will knowingly try to provoke an attach from terrorists, just to try and prove a point that he is the next God? That man does like his wars.

Brian, Pittsburgh   June 23rd, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Who's unpatriotic now?

Yasriel   June 23rd, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Charlie Black and McCame are showing their true color. For how long has Charlie profited from the blood of innocent people around the world? Now he is calling for the same fate on us.
Time to say NO to FEAR and YESSSSSSS to HOPE!

lil   June 23rd, 2008 4:21 pm ET

It is a shame that someone would want to win so bad that they would
wish for a torrorist attack so that innocent people can get hurt just to
try and make a point and get votes. Mr Black You should be ashame
of yourself.
We expect you would say most anything to win but never that.

58 old white ladies for OBAMA   June 23rd, 2008 4:19 pm ET

WELL THERE IS A MAN THAT HAS BLOWN

THE WARNING WHISTLE ABOUT THE

REPUBLICAN MIND SET.

IF WE HAD AN ATTACK HERE IT WOULD BE PROOF

POSITIVE OF THE ADMINISTRATION'S & MCBUSH

INCOMPETENCE IN THEIR HANDLING OF OUR SECURITY.

AND BOTH WARS. THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WOULD HAVE

TO BE MORONIC IMBECILES NOT TO GET THAT.

Hammerhead   June 23rd, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Yeah, I can't imagine why he'd say it either. Except that maybe he thought it would get you some votes, McCain. Duh.

P.S. Nice band-aids.

Mary wa   June 23rd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

So would an attack on Iran. Wouldn't put anything past the Republican/corporate machine.
