WASHINGTON (CNN)—The AFL-CIO, the nation’s largest labor organization, is poised to throw its support behind Sen. Barack Obama and launch a broad grassroots mobilization effort in support of the Democratic presidential nominee.

Obama’s name is the only one on the ballots which were faxed out Tuesday. The Illinois senator must receive two-thirds of the labor organizations total membership of 10.5 million union workers by the pre-set deadline, Thursday morning.

Sen. Hillary Clinton’s suspension of her presidential bid helped to essentially secure the endorsement for Obama.

According to spokesman Steve Smith, the labor organization stayed neutral during the primary season because a two-thirds majority would have been difficult to attain for any of the candidates given the fact that a number of the unions individually endorsed Obama, Clinton and John Edwards, with one supporting Sen. Chris Dodd.

“Once [Clinton] dropped out it was just a matter of process and getting the votes scheduled to decide on an endorsement,” Smith told CNN, adding that a “very positive” feeling came out of Obama’s meeting last week with all of the union presidents at AFL-CIO headquarters in Washington.

“Everyone coming out of that meeting felt very confident and positive about the direction [the AFL-CIO was] headed…and about running a strong and unified labor program,” Smith said.

The group has been running a campaign against presumptive Republican nominee John McCain since early march, aimed at defining the Arizona senator’s stances on jobs, trade and health care among union members.

The endorsement could help Obama in the critical swing states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota where union voters make up between 25 and 35 percent of the total vote and particularly among working blue-collar voters which Obama has struggled to gain support from so far.

With an outreach of more than 13 million registered voters in 23 ‘top-tier’ states, the AFL-CIO is budgeted to spend $53.4 million via mailers, phone calls, door to door and work site visits and has not yet ruled out television advertisements. Collectively, the 56 unions expect to spend $200 million in the 2008 election between, Presidential, Senate and House races nationwide.

It saddens me to read comments filled with anger and ignorance in connection with the upcoming election in November when the fate of many of the major cities on our planet is in grave danger due to our failure to take climate change seriously. Many more hurricanes will demolish islands and wreck towns, and rising waters will innundate costal cities, including New York. I wish the energy people put into critizing politicians could be directed towards coping with climate change!

Once this endorsement is official, the Republicans are toast.

The power, influence, and financial contibution of AFL-CIO cannot be matched by Republicans.

With their help, Obama's cash collction in July should break all records.

Well guess what sports fans…blog posters are a VERY SMALL minority of American citizens…and guess who is going to get an overwhelming majority of the votes from non-bloggers? There are MANY MANY MANY people out there who a) don't blog and b) are WAY smarter than you, and lots of them are definitely going to be voting for McCain.

Actually, I would imagine most people who aren't in unions are very happy about it. You might try opening your eyes and comparing your wages and benefits, etc. to those of your peers in non-unions businesses. Yours are almost certainly going to be lower. If there was EVER an organization that had as it's ONLY mission its own self-preservation, it is unions. Think about it.

Simba,from Toronto,canada   June 24th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

I really don't trust union, obama was endorsed by one in Ohio during primary and he ended up losing big time to Hillary by 10pts. I hope that the history won't repeat itself. However, i still believe that he might win in November due to his family history:
1) his cousin Odinga from his father side is the current Kenyan vice president.
2) another cousin this time from his mother Dick Cheney is the current USA vice president. Since is surrounded by vice presidents both sides,i think that it is time for him to be a president. No wonder he defeated Hillary. OBAMA 08-12

WWood:

The reason why many don't like unions is because they're inefficient, have poor productivity and lead to poorly made, high-cost products. Pay increases are tied to tenure rather than performance, the union infrastructure only survives to the extent that worker/management conflict exists and therefore does everything it can to continue it, etc. (just like wacko Hamas members try to undermine peace negotiations).

My father-in-law was a union electrician and would often have to wait hours for someone else to just open up a door for him, since it wasn't HIS union that had the job of opening up the door. Does anybody out there like being told that you CANNOT do something because someone else HAS to do it?

As for those of you who talk about Republicans not being in the 21st century, do you understand how laughable it is that your pro-union stance puts you squarely in the 1930s?????

Now the standard for electing our President is based on who raises the most money! So lets skip all the contests and forget who deserves to be the leader of the free world and just "buy" into the White House! For the record, even though the pretentious, deluded Obama spent 4 to 1 on TV ads etc., to promote his weak image, Clinton tied and actually won the popular vote but the Dem., process is flawed and unfair! Forget the "WILL" of the majority, just " buy" your way into the White House with the help of an unreliable, unrealistic Rule system and naive, gullible, short/blind sighted voters! Disillusioned democrat

Hmm lets all put this in order.

1. Democrat for Hillary or McCain ( are you serious or racist?)
2. O'bama has no experience.( Hmm you voted for bush who had
experience and screwed up everything so what's with the experience
thing again?)
3. O'Bama stole the election…(get serious…all those voters? black, white,
hispanic, asian, etc etc. Who held a gun to there heads?)
4. O'Bama is a liar? (Umm Mr…Mrs..G bush voter seems you was
mistaken about Bush (real liar) as you are about O'Bama (not a liar)
5. If you feel Hillary was cheated or if you feel O'bama is inexperienced
then don't vote…I just hoped you enjoyed paying more for gas,
paying more to send your kids to school, helping to save your
relatives from losing there homes maybe yours too and most of all
having your 401k or mutual fund stolen or you maybe had to dip in it.
If this isn't enough for you to vote on change then stay the way you
are miserable.

Keep on bring in the endorsements. O'bama 08-16

1. Hillary ( not running )
2. McBush ( Another bush most likely and I mean most likely, and you
can't separate the two no mater how you see it. )
3. Nader ( hmm 0.05 percent of the vote?)
4. Or O'bama?

Hey Union Member Thomas. You complain about your union but I bet you are more than willing to take the salary and benefits they get for you. I used to be a union president in my younger days and there were a number of complainers like you who slammed unions and bemoaned their dues but more than willingly took anything they could that the union bargained for them and often complained that it wasn't enough. If you don't like what you union does then run for office in it…oh wait, people like you just complain, they never want to participate or put in any off work time.

And this like all the other comments I have made on CNN comment pages won't likely be posted either.

America's conservatives really don't want him. But liberal America is in love with him. He'll do more to damage the relationship of America's whites and blacks than any other candidate in the history of our nation.

All these union and political endorsements get alot of read for Obama, but at the end of the day, it is the voter–behind closed curtains within the privacy of their own judgement that will make the decision as to the nest POTUS.
I will share my decision, and I hope it is the same for the majority of others, and that is NO OBAMA!.
I'd rather have 4 years of MCCain, that one day of OBAMA.
To all you Obama supporters, I just can't believe you are buying of this. Your hopes and dreams do not lie with the election of Obama. He is a say anything politician who has somehow latched onto the weakness in so many, its scary, real scary. Think long and hard about your decision in Nov. Remember what our mothers always told us—if it sounds too good to be true…its probably not !

JD   June 24th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

Thomas, see? he HAS done a lot for Illinois! Don't forget, paying more taxes is good for you, paying more for energy is good for you, paying more for food is good for you, quitting Iraq and letting it plunge into chaos is good for you, treating hate-filled terrorists like ordinary criminals is good for you. Now, don't you feel better?

Raymond Duke   June 24th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

I hope they get him more votes in the general then they did in the primarys. The unions are like the black vote in america . A small minority . Belle1   June 24th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

What Americans seem to forget. We are in TWO wars.

We are winning in Iraq. The surge level will be gone by October. Further troop pull outs will occur because Iraq is taking control of its' own country.

However, we are STILL in a war in Afghanistan. The death toll there is greater than Iraq. We have not defeated Osama Bin Ladin. Senator Obama's SubCommittee was in a position to actually do something about Afghanistan, but it did NOTHING for two years…why? The chairperson was too busy running for President!

What on Earth makes you think he will do anything after he is President?

No renegotiating NAFTA.
No fixing the deficit.
Manufacturing jobs will still leave the United States.

All of those saying Unions killled or caused the death of American Auto Industry need to wake up. GM refused to co-operate with Toyota for the research of Hybrid Technologies. Today they are closing plants not because of the Unions, but because they were stupid enough to think that the oil will always be $30/barrel. So lets get educated before posting stuff that has no merit. If Sen McCain can promise that oil drilled in American will not be sold on the International Market and will only be used in America, I will vote for him; but the truth is when that oil comes out of the ground (May be 10years) oil companies would be looking at India and China to see who can offer them a better price.

I, too, am waiting with excitement to have this very fine young man with fresh ideas and hope for this country to take the oath of office and so brilliantly step into the seat of the President of the United States.

Those of you who seem to feel that there is nothing but an "empty suit" standing before you, take a good long look just to see that he WEARS IT WELL. It is time to acknowledge that, heaven forbid, a MAN OF COLOR is smarter than you and will bring the much needed change to this country that is long over due!!

Question: what does that say for the republican foreign policy agenda and john mcwars'? And he is continuing the gwb foreign policy. Please answer that if you can. And answer how their so called experience has helped us? I'll take Obama's awesome, sound judgment any day over their so called experience.

Folks, those who are Democrat, stay Democrat and support(not necessarily love) Obama. There is no shame in acting from your mind if you heart betrays you. And for all the people who keep telling Hillary to run as an independent, with what money? She couldn't run as a Democrat in the primary without loaning herself millions and still winding up deep in the red. Where would she get the means to run as an independent? As an ex-democrat, I am a believer in unions when they are fair and helpful but not in Barack Obama or a DNC that's lost it's sense of democratic fairness.

I hope when it comes to individual choice in November the members will pay attention to ALL the other issues at stake and make their choice for John McCain a centrist Republican who cares for all people, not just left or right radicals.

Lucas, Nashville TN   June 24th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

"UNIONS KILLED THE AUTOMOTIVE"?

Industry? Is that the word you left out?

No no no… the American auto industry SUCKING is what killed it. Not the unions. If it were not for them, it would have folded up a long time ago.

Sandy Schwartz   June 24th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

I do believe that honesty, intelligence, ambition, generosity, loyalty, and comjmitment always prevails. Great job Barack Obama! We, the American people are extremely proud of your professionalism and love for this great country and ALL the people in it. We will fight honestly, professionally and respectfully along with you on your journey to being the next President of the United States of Amercia!

It's time we Rock with BARACK!!!

M.S. Indiana   June 24th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

JD, oh wait a second, was it not McCain trying to do a immigration bill together with Ted Kennedy ?? considering alot more republicans have companies, they are the ones benefiting from it.. low pay, no human right, slavery, no tax to pay…

Where the democrats wanna make them a part of usa, so they can pay tax, help with their children's education..

SaneTexan   June 24th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

RE: JD, get your facts straight. It's the Republicans who won't crack down on the employers who hire illegal immigrants. That is the real fix to the problem. You know their motto…big business rules!
The Dems need to come back to the working blue collar Americans and quit taking sides with the minorities just for a vote. It hasn't worked out so well for them in the last 40 years. Then they shove Obama down our throats…I've had it with both Parties. No Obama, No McCain.

Unions were obviously an important factor in fair labor practices at one time. Now the union bosses are just in for themselves, their power, and YOUR money. They registered as a 527 yet??you are DISBANNED!!!!!!

Blue Collar in Ohio   June 24th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

The country was built on the backs of unionized workers. They are the home-grown, gritty, patriotic counterpart to our American soliders. They fought and even died for fair wages, safe conditions, and humane hours. Period. Before you start spouting off Republican big business talking points, do your homework. And we will be out in force for Obama, keeping that great American engine humming.

We need everyone everywhere to help us put new leadership in the white house. President bush has ran the country like Senator Clinton ran her Presidential bid.. In major debt…..

Dems be dopes   June 24th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

While I'm at it…….

The first change we were told to expect was when the Dems took over Congress in 2006.

We saw change!

Unemployment is up, gas prices are up, food prices are up, jobs are scarce.

What went down?

Congressional approval rating……now at 12%, 10 points lower than Pres Bush approval rating.

I just can't wait to see what happens if we elect this empty suit with no experience and the Dems control everything.

But we will feel good about ourselves.

If not Hillary....then McCain   June 24th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

His name is the only one on the ballot?

Hummmmmm, sounds like Chicago Politics at it's best.

He must feel right at home with only his name on the ballot.

Perhaps, some of these endorsements should wait until after the convention. Last I checked, his official title is….
PRESUMPTIVE NOMINEE

Roofin Reality, Houston, Tx.   June 24th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

This will certainly help Senator Obama in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan.
This can't help Senator McCain in those states and further puts his camp in negative attack mode. Which in turn goes directly towards what Obama said a couple of weeks ago when he said "they'll try to make us out to be scary."

Down with Obama   June 24th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Unions aren't what they were when they were created. Now they are just like Obama….Money in their pockets (leaders) is all they are interested in…they don't care about the people anymore.

Unless you are rich any working benfits you got came yuo got because of the union.

This is a huge victory. Expected? Yes, but still huge. Sen. Obama's policies are definitely aimed at giving aid to those who are part of these unions. Good for them!

Grampy Mcsame and the republicans do not like unions. Every large company that I worked for always discouraged unions. Why do you think that is?

Go get a life , your madam is $20 million in debt due to her ego and lying nature.
All the McCain's sidekicks…by the general elections McCain is due to be admitted to some Phsyciatric care with his brainless skull bolted to a bed. So you too sit and weep or vote for Obama.
No matter how much you want to stay corrupted, Obama will not let that happen.

NO UNIONS DIDN'T KILL THE AUTO INDUSTRY! THE AUTO INDUSTRY KILLED ITSELF BY NOT GIVEN US, QUALITY CARS; BY NOT HAVING A 'VISION' AND SEING THE COMING OIL SHORTAGE (WHICH IS ON ITS WAY!).

In 1988, we decided to support the American auto industry and we bought a brand new Ford van and a brand new chevy Beretta! Within 5 years, the paint was peeling, the Ford had been in the shop several times….. after the warranty expired, of course! This taught us a lesson……. never again would we buy a domestic car! Add that to the miserably poor gas mileage and we had two lemons on our hands! We have bought foreign ever since. Our first Toyota, lasted 20 years before we TRADED it for a new one! Sorry the U.S. auto industry shot itself in the foot! We have to face REALITY, and LEARN for our mistakes! Something the American Auto Industry knows nothing about!

A VOTE FOR MCCAIN IS A VOTE FOR MORE WAR, MORE FAILED POLICIES, MOUNTING NATIONAL DEBT….. ISN'T OVER $10 TRILLION WE OWE TO THE SAUDIS, DUBAI & CHINA ENOUGH???
THANKS GEORGE W. BUSH! NO SIR, WONT BE FOOLED AGAIN!

Farrell, Houston, Tx   June 24th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Unions should not support either party it should be up to the employees on who they want there money to go. I wonder what there going to do once Obama starts taxing the corporation. More UNION jobs are leaving the USA. O Well.

axt113   June 24th, 2008 3:50 pm ET

No what killed the American auto industry was they forgot that you don't just build cars you build a relationship, why do you think people buy toyotas and Hondas over and over, its because they know hey are getting a quality car each time, America taught the japanese how to build a reputation but then forgot those lessons for themselves, now the Japanese are drinking their milkshakes
