Sen. John McCain's campaign nicknamed Obama 'Dr. No' Tuesday.
Sen. John McCain's campaign nicknamed Obama 'Dr. No' Tuesday.

(CNN) – In the ongoing back-and-forth between John McCain and Barack Obama over energy policy, the Arizona senator's campaign gave Obama a new nickname on Tuesday – Dr. No.

“It’s just very clear at this point that Senator Obama is Dr. No on energy security,” McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said on a conference call with reporters. “Today it was ‘no’ on the $300 million for a new kind of battery. Before it was ‘no’ on further exploration or possibility of further exploration of our coasts. It was ‘no’ on gas tax relief that can help this summer families that are hurting. It’s ‘no’ on expanded nuclear power investments that we can make.”

“So, we think we’re seeing a pattern here,” Rogers concluded.

Watch: McCain discusses his energy plan

On Capitol Hill, Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tennessee, echoed the list of energy initiatives Obama has disagreed with, adding, “It's a new law we might call Obamanomics. It would repeal half the law of supply and demand.”

Earlier in Las Vegas, Obama called McCain’s $300 million prize for a car battery that would “leapfrog” current electrically-powered cars a “gimmick,” a word he often uses to describe McCain’s summer gas tax holiday proposal.

“I commend him for his desire to accelerate the search for a battery that can power the cars of the future,” said Obama. “But I don't think that a $300 million prize is the way to go.”

He added, “When John F. Kennedy decided that we were going to put a man on the moon, he didn't put a bounty out for some rocket scientist to win. He put the full resources of the United States government behind the project and called on the ingenuity and innovation of the American people.”

Obama also went after McCain for admitting Monday that offshore drilling might not provide immediate relief but would have a “psychological impact that I think is beneficial.”

“In case you're wondering, in Washington-speak what that means is, 'It polls well,'" he said. "It's an example of how Washington politicians try to convince you that they did something to make your life better when they really didn't.”

Obama calls everything a gimmick if he didn't think of it. When Obama was in the IL senate, he voted three times to give his state a gas tax holiday. I guess they deserved a break and we don't. He voted for the Cheney Energy bill that gave huge tax breaks to big oil, now that he's in the spot light, he's calling their profits obscene. He didn't think they were obscene when he was voting to give them more of our tax dollars with his vote. The guy is a fraud, he will say and do anything to get elected. What is his plan to reduce the price of gas, he says no to everything, but offers no solutions. He is a senator now, couldn't he introduce legislation to help us out. Fast Eddy hasn't got a clue how to help us reduce the price of gas.

Glenn   June 24th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

Roger's pattern is the ridiculous policies and ideas coming out of McCain's head and mind. The most prevalent indicators showing how out of touch McCain is are his lack of vision, imagination and intelligence to deal with the complexity of 21st century problems and issues as well as his age..

Enlightened Voter   June 24th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

Terrorism has risen sharply since gwb took office. So the republican (john mcwar) foreign policies aren't actually working despite their so called 'experience'. Let's try someone who has proven sound judgment for a change and not the big companies in their back pocket - that man of course would be Obama.

Mccain is confused from old age again and he can't tell apart the tv show Dr.Who and and Obama's name. You should check your facts yourself instead of listening to your lobbiests' ideas. When was the last time, you get a check up with a real doctor?

Judgement requires the ability to say "no" to bad ideas and "yes" to good ones and to make difficult choices among priorities. Saying "yes" to all ideas does not yield a good result.

I would love to see a "bad idea jeans" commercial done with some of these ideas being batted around…

Real options with measurable goals/objectives–are a lot better than hope and pie and rhetoric laced with blue-sky and vague promises–like Mr. Obama.

Guess what–no where has John McCain ever even suggested we might have to "tighten our belts", "give up our accumulated wealth", or subjugate our liberty–for a better union and the common good.

Why would a leader create expectations of the necessity for his fellow citizens to suffer and give up the wealth they have sacrificed to make themselves–for vague promises that carry the tone of blatant socialist ideology?

The Democratic Energy Policy explained:
NO new oil exploration/drilling - just use less, silly!
NO nuclear energy - 'cause "nuclear" is a scary word.
NO coal - uh uh, don't EVEN go there!
NO Hydroelectric - why you thoughtless brute, think of the fish.
NO wind farms - bad for birds, and Babs don't like 'em.
NO solar farms - ugly; plus they cover up desert habitat.
NO big batteries - full of lead, plus ya still gotta charge 'em somehow.
NO hydrogen cells - how do you crack the h2 w/out other power sources?
NO tidal electric - c'mon, get serious. what about the estuaries.
NO wood/cow chip burning - tut tut, think of your carbon footprint.
YES - Magical Mystery Fuel! First conceived of at woodstock, it evokes the spirit and power of the 60's and 70's! Totally edible and organic, its combustion emits only water and friendly UV-free sunshine and rainbows!

The crypt keeper himself.

You lost your soul in South Carolina in 2000 John.

Rick FL   June 24th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

Ahh, isn't that funny? Let's see here….

- McCain said he was "against" pork-barrel spending/earmarks. What do you call a $300 million sweepstakes? Free?
- McCain portrays himself as an "environmentalist," yet he is willing to backtrack on protecting our fragile coastline areas from drilling. Note: there are currently 68 million acres available and not being used.
- Most economists agree McCain's gas tax holiday would save consumers very little or not lower gas prices at all. That is a gimmick.

Our energy security requires long-term solutions, so we should say no to Dr. Smokescreen-McCain.

Ula Nejad- Sacramento Ca   June 24th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

McCain defines reality and bring hope. Innovation is what we want to see in a leader. He stands true to his belief in reform, prosperity and peace. Reform on immigration, energy, healthcare, foreign policy.

The Best McCain can come up with is a $300tho to anyone who can come up with a good battery. Are you kidding me! Obama is Dr. No to all the feel good ideals that the GOP keeps throwing out there. It seems like McCain and his people get up every morning watch the news to see what the people are saying, then they come up with a gimmick trying to get people to pay attention. It is funny how the old bate on hook is not working for the GOP any more.

It did have an impact, OPEC met this weekend and are talking about releasing more oil….that is what he meant….psycholigical impact on the people we buy from, telling them that we have had enough and we will persue our own avenues, we will make Americans and America rich instead of buying from the Middle East and making them all rich.

Why is it that all Republicans like to do is give our money away to corporate america. We have given billions to the oil firms for them to develop alternative energy over the last 10 years but we have not seen any progress. It is time for Americans to wake up and see that the only thing that Republicans care for is making corporate america and their wealthy friends even richer at the majorities expense. Maybe you do not like him but he might be our only choice left in going up against the greed of corporate america and the wealthy that own it and taking this country back for the people. McCain campaign full of lies   June 24th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

Spin, manipulation and yet more packs of lies by the GOP. Obama says "no" to gimmicks like contests for batteries and caving in to API lobbyist to pollute the ocean with oil.

Obama has ALREADY CLEARLY stated his energy policy 50 times. McCain's people are just spinning the facts and playing games. The truth is that McCain is bought out by the big $ lobbyists that are professional con-artists and liars.

There are some true partisan hacks in this forum, McCain actually has an energy plan, and people call it "gimmicks". Obama has a plan to study things and partisan hacks call it "the future" open your eyes McCain is on the right track with his energy policy, it's time for Obama to jump on board and offer something other than speeches and the poitics of fear he accuses the other guy of doing.

Darrel from Denver   June 24th, 2008 4:58 pm ET

Grasping at straws, McCain is.

He is cooked and can only try to run a negative attack on Obama to have any chance. This presumes, of course, the general public are total fools and idiots - which has won the day in previous elections as we are now painfully aware.

The Republicans are morally bankrupt and intellectually exhausted.

Bomb, bomb, bomb McSame is short on energy policy and long on WAR. This is the repubs goal to shift the campaign to fear instead of an energy, education, health, jobs and infrastructure policy that America needs. 'Dr. No' is NO for gimmicks like drilling that won't see any appreciable oil for 10 years and YES for an energy policy that can change the habit of America and bring alternatives for the 21st century. American cannot survive on an addiction to OIL! Republicans are very short sighted.

sometimes you have to tell who gets everything, "no". you can't spoil the child all the time. why drill for more oil when we have oil rigs not producing? why give big oil more area to drill when they have 80 million acres sitting there already? why throw money at auto makers to produce an electric car, just cut the red tape, and get it done. mcbush, needs to think of an original plan, that does not include big oil, that his largest contributers belong to. put on a diaper, and please be quiet, for 5 more months.

R.I.F.   June 24th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

Mr. Magoo,

That's because all of your "solutions" are gimmicks. There are no quick fixes to gas prices. Have you ever watced CNNMoney or read any of the 1000s of articles from intellegent economists. Every time you say you have a quick fix it is 100% gimmick and pure pandering.

It's like saying you have a quick fix for AIDS. There are none.

Kaye- Jacksonville FL   June 24th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

And McCain is Dr McCrazy…..Obama is willing to take a stand against proposals that are short-sighted pandering…sometimes it's a very good thing to say "No"….remember Nancy Reagan!! "Just Say No!"

Mike   June 24th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Dr. No says no to Flipper McBush and his stupid ideas. No to off shore drilling because we do not have the refinery capacity to handle the oil if we do drill it. McBush knows we are scared of high gas prices so he pretends the off shore drilling which he has always opposed in the past, might help, it won't. No to the silly pandering gas tax holiday that McBush thinks we are stupid enough to think is an answer. No to the 300 Million Cash Prize that McBush plans to award to one of his Corporate Crook Buddies. And while we are at it. No to four more years of wastefull war that has ruined our economy and put us a Trillion Dollars in debt to China. No No No!!!

Michael   June 24th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Dr no? Seriously. His campaign cannot come up with a single, more appropriate contemporary reference? First a Jimmy Carter analogy and now this.

Sherman, turn the WAY BACK machine to 1950. good lord.

JJ from Arizona   June 24th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

I don't know, I like Obama, but that $300mil. is a good start. We should be gathering up the nation's smarties to fix this problem, but it doesn't mean we shouldn't encourage it in other ways as well. Desperate times call for desperate measures, my friends.

bridgette   June 24th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

That's just sounds real stupid. What does that even mean. This is the same man that says he wants to cut spending by the government but wants to give $300 million to something that exists already. Has he heard of Hybrid.

Franky   June 24th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

Ohhh trust me Senator, I know how the unconscious mind of a Conservative works…LOL!!!!!

fairandstraight   June 24th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

McCain was Dr. No until he started running for president. He now says yes to Dr. King when he voted against the Dr. King Holiday. He now says yes to offshore drilling when he said no all along. He says yes to public financing only because it would be to his benefit if he could have convinced Obama to continue to be fooled by him. He also. People need more than a psychological impact, they need reality.
With all the experience Sen. McCain is claiming, America should be on top of the world had he exercised that experience during his career. It is that type of experience which has this country headed toward a recession.

I am sick of McCain and hope he loses by a landslide in November.

Obama 08!!!!

Ganesh   June 24th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

Isn't this whole thing kinda farce, stupid, mindless… both McCain and Obama agree on the need for good car battery technology and yet they argue and attack each other… though to be fair at least Obama commended McCain for his willingness to promote better battery technology research. When campaigning there is this need to state disagreement with ur opponent strongly no matter how small or trivial the disagreement is …

Perhaps it's not an issue of being against new ideas, just your bad ideas Mr. McCain. Good God the new contest? Are you kidding? Are you next going to suggest that we make it into a reality TV show, what "The Next American Battery"? Mr. McCain you need to stop with the gimmicks and get down to real solutions; this is ridiculous!

Sen. McCain really needs to look at his staff and make some changes.

Obama and Democrat policy is wrong people! If you don't agree with their policies then the only choice is to not vote for Democrats. Did I mention that they lie and spin each issue to acheive their goals of strangling a fair and balanced system. My RI Democrat Senators/Congressmen all vote for the things I am against. Check out your Democrat Senators/Congressmen to see if you agree with their votes….if you don't agree….don't vote for them!!!!!

You gotta love this part of the article:

"Obama also went after McCain for admitting Monday that offshore drilling might not provide immediate relief but would have a “psychological impact that I think is beneficial.”

“In case you're wondering, in Washington-speak what that means is, 'It polls well,'" he said. "It's an example of how Washington politicians try to convince you that they did something to make your life better when they really didn't.”

Who is Dr. No? McCain needs to stop referencing characters from 1852.

Anita from Arizona   June 24th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

McCain's ideas are gimmicks. He's going in the wrong direction. Treating our energy crisis with band-aids.

Obama said “When John F. Kennedy decided that we were going to put a man on the moon, he didn't put a bounty out for some rocket scientist to win. He put the full resources of the United States government behind the project and called on the ingenuity and innovation of the American people.”

Add the end to the Iraq war, there's the money to fund it. Sign me up.

SS   June 24th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

Richardson has it right, RIGHT! You can't drill your way out of the high cost of gas.
I'd rather be a NO man, than a YES man for the current administration.
Doesn't the McCain camp have some work to do in orchastrating a propogandized terror plot, which apparently would be good for his candidacy???
WHATEVER IT TAKES, EH MCCAIN?!?

Pete   June 24th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

Well, it's normal for someone to say No to policies that won't work or help. The gas tax holiday is laughable. Drilling is the antithesis of what we are trying to accomplish; No dependancy on Oil, foreign or at home. $300 million prize for a better battery? Why not throw $300 million into research to get better cost effective batteries for EV's. The prize will then be for all Americans. He may be Mr. No to republicans, but sometimes you have to say no to the fluff.

Evangelical for Obama   June 24th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

Actually, the words McCain is searching for are "Yes We Can." But I suppose Dr. No is kinda sorta close?

Obama just isn't a member of the old Gimmick of the Week Club. Yes, we all know McCain wants to become president, and yes, we realize that a lot of people can get fooled by gimmicks. But honestly, campaigning for president isn't a sweepstakes. McCain, you aren't Ed McMahon or Simon Cowell.

We all know that America's Got Talent, but we don't need the president to become a reality TV host. Is it just me or is McCain starting to get as crazy as Howie Mandell??

Enlightened Voter   June 24th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

Obama is Dr. No when it comes to your crazy schemes (gas tax holiday) he doesn't lie to us or tell us stuff he thinks we want to hear, he tells the truth which is much more than I can say for you Dr. WAR.

The ENERGY crisis is being purposefully confused with the GAS PRICE crisis. The two are only related in that the failure of the Bush administration to address the ENERGY crisis created the GAS PRICE crisis.

Solving the immediate problem of high gas prices is simple: SLOW DOWN!!!

That is funny. He is actually Dr. "YES" to taxing the oil companies, making the government richer and bigger, and making our energy more expensive. Where is his solution? His solution is to Bash, bash, and bash some more, complain about how long drilling would take, and spout off about clean and renewable sources. What ARE those sources?? Please tell us? If he means coal, nuclear, woodwaste, drilling for our own oil and natural gas then I am with him!!
