Nader is taking heat for his latest comments.

(CNN) — Ralph Nader's presidential candidacy has received little media attention, but his latest critique of Barack Obama has come under fire for it's seemingly racial overtones.

Speaking with Colorado's Rocky Mountain News, Nader accused Obama of attempting to both "talk white" and appeal to "white guilt" in his quest to win the White House.

"There's only one thing different about Barack Obama when it comes to being a Democratic presidential candidate. He's half African-American," Nader told the paper in comments published Tuesday. "Whether that will make any difference, I don't know. I haven't heard him have a strong crackdown on economic exploitation in the ghettos. Payday loans, predatory lending, asbestos, lead. What's keeping him from doing that? Is it because he wants to talk white? He doesn't want to appear like Jesse Jackson? We'll see all that play out in the next few months and if he gets elected afterwards."

Obama's presidential campaign called those comments disappointing, and his communication's director, Robert Gibbs, said Tuesday they were "reprehensible and basically delusional."

"I don't think he's spent a lot of time looking at the record of Barack Obama," Gibbs said on MSNBC.

Nader, the longtime consumer advocate who was blamed by many Democrats for Al Gore’s loss in the 2000 presidential election, said Obama's top issue should be poverty in America, given his racial heritage.

Nader is about as old as McCain and about as nutty. Can't understand why he tries to get into every election. What's his purpose in this? GET REAL!!

newbies don't know any better   June 25th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

ONLY PRO- Obama comments are allowed and seen as truth.

Any other comments or critcism are disappointing at best or RACIST at worse.

The hypocritical pandering of the Obama campaign for their lying, divisive candidate who HAS literally done nothing for his country.

Yet he presents himself as having perfect judgement and perfect insight.

Obama is the only DEMocrat I have not been able to vote for in the last 35 years.

That is how UNappealing his tactics of filthy lies and vulgar untrue attacks has been.

Ken Pittsburgh   June 25th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

First there is Karl Rove saying that Obama is a county club snob little to forget that Pbama up to a few years ago would have to enter a counrty thur the back door and now we have Nader saying something this dumb, this must be the only way that h e can keep his name in the news so far you can not find in this election cycle without a flashlight,a map, both hands and radar.

Nader, you are not relevant. so please hush!
Is it a really slow news day CNN?
On another subject: I just made my first and last contribution to Hillary Clinton. It actually felt pretty good. I did it because Barack asked me to. I still sent an equal amount to Obama. I have no interest in helping Hillary repay her personal debt but the vendors must be paid now.

Teri   June 25th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Nader has a right to say anything he wants- remember free speech?
Obama supporters- you are supposed to disagree but not try to shut him up- that is the American way.
And, why are you so afraid of a little criticism? You say your candidate is tough- so, can't he handle it?

Okay, I really get upset at this taking white/black business. How about the man is speaking like himself. Maybe, just maybe you need to meet more African American people Ralph Nader. Then you might find out that their really is no one type of "talk". And you want to be President? Why? Because you talk white???

Obama is speaking about issues that affect the AMERICAN PEOPLE and that means all of us.

Nader is an IQ test. If you voted for him once, you're stupid. If you voted for him twice, you should be deported.

If you vote for him now, then you, your brothers and sisters, your parents, and all of your children should be executed. Because having your genes around are a long-term threat to humanity.

Mary   June 25th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

Ralph Nader is a politician I would not vote for and seldom believes but I do believe that Obama is playing on the White Quilt of some Americans. I will not vote for Obama because I can not believe him and he is a far left radical, a socialist.
CNN has done America a disservice for promoting Senator Obama and not telling the truth about him and his policies.
CNN should just report the news, not try to influence it.

Stacy   June 25th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

Nader needs to make such kind of comment to be in the spotlight.
With all the problem this country is facing we are going to be worried if Obama is talking white or black.
Nader needs just to talk about how he is going to fix thing in this country.

Well for a candidate trying to get the black vote,,,he called everyone else a racist trying to knock out Hillary. Now he is trying to get the white vote. People who can "see thru his little capers". So what did you expect him to do with white voters…TALK WHITE.

Obama has not been rich all his life so he understand the inner city problems probably better than anyone who has ever ran for President. I think too say he is talking white is just a silly thing too say. How do you speak white or how do you speak black. There are two ways too speak. One is with correct grammar and the other is uncorrect grammar.

Obama will win because he understands white, black, dogs, cats, parrots, asian , mexican, bahamian, jamaican, i think you get it. WE ARE ALL HURTING NOW!! And who is ralph Nader??

Greg   June 25th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Ralph Nader, in my opinion, is someone who just refuses to just… go away. It seems as though once every four years he rears his little head in order to recapture his 15 minutes of fame. Okay we got it: Nobody drives Corvairs anymore!!! Now just go away.

patricia   June 25th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Not only are Nader's statements totally wrong, but he's an idiot if he doesn't see how good Obama as president will be for this country. He has "sour grapes". He knows he'll never be president so he tries to ruin the other guy's chances. He does it every four years.

Bendo   June 25th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Kiah   June 25th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

I also find it amusing that a WHITE MAN can give advice to a BLACK MAN on how he should be appealing to people in order to win. As if appealing to one group has EVER helped any minority running for office become successful. Mr. Nader your advice explains why you're running as someone with NO CHANCE of winning.

Why is it that Obama's opponents are the ones that continually bring race into the election instead of discussing issues?
Guess they know they can't beat him based on issues so they need to find something else to try to get voters to listen to them.

Mark Anthony Adams   June 25th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Hey, Nader – It's quite obvious to me that not only are you a sore loser, but you are what would be defined as the "old school generation in America" – whom just can't quite understand this 'CHANGE' phenomenon that's going on in America and throughout the world. NEWSFLASH: We eliminated the demeaning and racially based overtones of the phrase 'talking white' – It's now called being an "effective and well educated communicator" – WAKE-UP OUT OF YOUR SLUMBER!

I can't wait until everyone over the age of 50 bites it, so we can finally move past race and this stupid divisive BS that continues to divide small groups against one another instead of banding together to solve the problems we all share.

True   June 25th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Just because Obama is half black he should be only concerned with helping black ghetto's? Why not help all of America? which Obama is proposing. Barack has spent half his life helping the communities of the south side of Chicago, which IS primarily black and rough.

Ralph, get your head out of your bum and stop trying to play the "Man" or dictating "White Guy".

Joe, Austin, TX   June 25th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

Nader says the number one thing an African American candidate should do is describe the plight of the poor. Why? Because black = poor in Nader's mind? Actually, Obama was never poor. And many poor are white, hispanic, asian, and others. Why is it upon Obama being black to carry the banner, and not John McCain to do so – which he doesn't. It's Nader that is letting his racism show here.

J.N. Atailya   June 25th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

Nader has obviously given up on his decades-long attempt at self-fellation. Ralph, your closest advisers already have explained that back surgery — particularly at your age — is necessary to achieve this most important goal. Either get the operation or untuck yourself from that ball. You look awkward in that position.

Benjamin   June 25th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

I wish Ralph Nader would stick to the consumer activism that made him famous. He did some actual good for the country in that capactity. Now he's just wasting that talent as a third rate presidential candidate with no real platform other than, "Look at how radically different I am!". He's complaining about the substance of the other candidates' platforms, but I have yet to hear anything substantial about his own platform.

Really people, lets be honest on Obama. If he was white and running on the exact same platform (whatever that might be since he really doesn't have any solutions to anything), and had been in the Senate a whole 3 years with no experience what-so-ever …. would he really be the Democratic candidate?? I think not!!!!! I am a Democrat but how can I vote for a guy who has done NOTHING in his political career and is such a complete unknown. I hate to say this, but I am going to vote for McCain. He is an honest man who has a history (be it a longggggggg history lol) of working accross the isle.

What's really sad is Mr. Nader's total miss regarding that any candidate should make it a priority to rectify the causes for rampant poverty in this country regardless of the candidates political affiliation or ethnicity.

Mr. Nader's comments smack of racism in their over simplification and sweeping generalization.

Question: Is Mr. Nader trying to speak "desperate"?

More of Obama hypocrisy   June 25th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

That is what 50% of the Democratic Party has been saying all along.

This race baiting that Obama does has destroyed the democratic party.

It is only the fact that HRC and Bill are both loyal democrats and will work for unity… that the hateful damaged done by a reckless Obama MIGHT get repaired.

If there were a better alternative in NOV- none of the HRC supporters would bother to vote Dem this year.

Obama is lucky that ANY dem is better than NO dem in the white house. That has regained him some- but not all of the democrats that he appalled in the primary with his blatent race-card playing and cheating tactics of hate and division.

Substance not Rhetoric   June 25th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

As for those who don't understand what is racist about this. Why does he presume that this is the way Obama is all the time. He was raised by his white grand parents in KANSAS. I doubt if he will talk like someone from montgomery alabama. Especially after going to Harvard.

But evidently if you are a black man you have to placate to the BLACK people so you can be down with the hood. Well maybe he expects it because HIllary started her feminis,t line that Obama needs to become the great BLACK LIBERATOR.

John McHenry   June 25th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Well Mr Nader, I'm a Republican but I'm Voting for OBAMA because we need to turn the page from OLD POLITICIANS who have been in legislating for a longtime but could not gforsee that the IRAQ war will destroy ouy economy and end the LIVES of OUR YOUNGMEN. This youngman saw it and said we need to fight BIN LADIN and you saw nothing wrong with going to IRAQ to fight there.
You should realized by now that majority of Americans do noy buy your kind of ideas. OBAMA is a new FRESH AIR for the country and now I'M an OBAMACAN and will never vote for anybody but OBAMA. Thank you. He OBAMA is not black per say but also he is part WHITE , so he does have part of my caucasian genes so how can he be only black. Shame on you

Anonymous   June 25th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Didn't Obama say that he would be accused of being too black and not black enough? Well, here's the latter, and the former has been out there from the beginning.

Yet, when Obama says this will happen he's accused of playing the race card.

It doesn't take a genius to know where these attacks will come from; Obama is doing the right thing by getting out in front of them. He's acting just the way I wished Kerry and Gore had acted. Had they done so, imagine how different things would be now.

I like Obama more every day.

Debra Cahalane   June 25th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

I just have to laugh on this one. Ralph Nader has become ridiculous. He should go back to being a consumer advocate and stay out of politics. Perhaps that way he could get his white foot out of his mouth.

Justin   June 25th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

I wish all the people that so openly hate Nader would actually take a look at all the amazing things he's done for this country. Seriously – do a minute of reading on his life before writing him off. Nader has a point about the politicians in this country avoiding talking about meaningful change. Or, doing anything meaningful. But, more than ever, our politicians represent ourselves, I think. I see a lot of complaining about the state of the country, and absolutely no effort (by most) to do anything about it. Other than throw $$$ at a politician. That's not enough.

Rob Robbins   June 25th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Apparently, in Ralph Nader's liberal, racist world, an African American speaking intelligently is seen as "talking white." God forbid because an intelligent African American may decide to no longer reside on the plantation white liberals have created for African Americans and other minorities.

It's no wonder liberals such as myself are sick and tired of the politically correct stupidity coming from white liberals and, in general, the Democratic Party.

The last time I checked, Obama is doing a pretty good job without Nader's advice.

That said, I've often heard Obama talk about cracking down on unfair lending practices, more transparency in credit, a more public early childhood education system, affordable healthcare, etc., all of which helps lower income households.

It appears to me that Nader isn't really paying attention to the Presidential race that he's a part of. Wake up Nader!

JUST WHEN PEOPLE LIKE NADER KNOW THE HEALING OF RACE ISSUES IS IN THE MAKING THEY ATTEMPT TO TEAR DOWN INSTEAD OF BUILD UP. I agree that Nader is a fool, but what is it that you have to be African American to talk about thoses issues???? That is dumb. Going by that rule Obama could only half speak to those issues.

Kristy   June 25th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

Maybe Nader needs a couple of obvious pointers here:

Obama isn't only concerned with what black, white, hispanics etc. need, he is looking at the big picture for this country.

If Nader could step back and look at the direction this country is headed in and our very immediate problems (trillions spent on a war is not going to aid efforts to increase funds for impoverished communities) I don't think he'd be asking why Barack isn't just talking about helping to solve the issues poor people face in this country.

His comments were more stupid than they were racist.

Erika   June 25th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

Just a note, if you read Obama's blueprint for change, he outlines not only his legislative accomplishments in addressing poverty, but also a plan to lift more Americans out of it. I sometimes notice that many issues addressed by both Obama and McCain in their respective proposals are not highlighted in the media, such as their education plans. I would recommend that Nader check out each of the major party candidate's websites to see where they stand on a number of issues that do not come up everyday in the political news.

David   June 25th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

David   June 25th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

Nader, at this point, is desperately irrelevant – trying hopelessly to have an impact.

Not to throw around labels, but Mike is a supremicist. And by the way, Mike, it's not because he's old that I won't vote for him. It's because he's wrong – about everything.

He's wrong if he thinks that Vietnam can be won in Iraq.

He's wrong if he thinks that he can continue to pander to big oil and help the environment.

He's wrong if he thinks the U.S. economy will sustain a one hundred year war ( I know that this is hyperbole – an ongoing war) with tax rates at their current levels.

He's wrong if he thinks that he can fuel a green economy and continue to subsidize big oil companies that don't need our tax dollars anyway.

He's just wrong, Mike, and I'm sorry that you're too narrow-minded/fearful/racist to see that. Barack Obama is about as racist as you are intelligent – sorry if you're too dumb to know that's not a compliment.

In closing, go to hell.

I am sitting here somewhat amazed at the heated back and forth of the responses and it is only June and neither candidate has actually been formally nominated by their party. Let's wait until after the conventions are over, we know you the VP candidate will be and hear a few debates before we make a decison. Such strong opinions based on so little information about the issues from either candidate. I guess it is easier not to think about things too much. Just draw that line in the sand now.

As one of the "angry Clinton supporters", I'm starting to come around to Obama. I really like what he said about finding a long term solution to our oil crisis instead of throwing a bandaid on the issue.

The Clintons still need to be a major part of his team – I imagine we are going to see a lot of good things in the next few years.

I can't believe I'm going to say it, but go Obama! I'm not 100% sure I trust you but yet, that's what you get with all politicians. Don't forget Clinton and her supporters. You are doing all the right things so far.

Do alll politicians not self-promote themselves? That would include your "liberal guilt" candiate Sen. Obama.

You people think Mr. Nader is a nutjob because the only time you hear from him (because you won't do research yourself) is when he says something that is true, not what you want to hear and/or "shocking".

The hatred towrads Ralph Nader from the Democratic Patry is ridiculous. Your party couldn't get enough votes. It's that simple. Maybe you should try to figure out why so many people found Ralph Nader better qualified than the Vice President and a popular Senator.

Franky   June 25th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

What has Obama accomplished, NOTHING!"

Atta boy Ralphy. You were already seen as a joke for trying to run again, so now why don't you make yourself look like a racist on top of that.

The good news is that this should be the last election in which we have to put up with this clown.

nader should be tried for the ills of the US, the war in iraque and the list goes on. How does this prick sleep at nights? Nada can u honestly be at peace with yourself after what u did in 2000 and the consequences are being felt now.

Just typical Obama hypocrisy   June 25th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

It is called using race as both a shield from criticism and as a sword to do damage to your opposition.

Look at how he managed to get the racist label to stick to Bill and Hillary Clinton.

They have both been working for Civil rights and women's rights since BEFORE Obama was born.

Patrick   June 25th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

Obama is the most typical politician I've ever seen. I'd like someone to tell me what bi-partisan piece of legislation he has worked on with the Republicans that wasn't popular with his own party? Because I can name you about 20 pieces of legislation that McCain defied his own party to work with the democrats on. Nader (someone I could vote for if McCain wasn't running) speaks the truth, Obama is courageous only in the fact that his supporters claim him to be so.

Edgar, Texas   June 25th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

Nader has always been an ignorant quack, and his Green Party has always been an alternative to SANITY!

Jon, Pittsburgh, PA   June 25th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

Anyone that makes a truthful statement that reflects negatively on Mr. Obama – they are a racist. This is the gist of the Obama campaign. It's a shame the Democratic party has been taken over by the left-wing this time.

Proud to be a middle-of-the-road Independent (just changed from Democratic) that will vote for the most qualified Commander in Chief in November. McCain wins in this regard.

This is not a popularity contest. Obama supporters ought to stop being so vindictive and insulting on these blogs. You are turning people like me far away from your saviour.

Michael   June 25th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Ethnocentric idiot.

Sean   June 25th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

So then Nader believes that if you're a black politician, then clearly, you need to focus your energy on ghettos? Why is that, Nader? Because you think that if you're black, then you must have come from a ghetto? I won't accuse Nader of being racist because I reserve that label for those who truly deserve it….but these comments are certainly ignorant at best.

On the up side, Nader will probably take less votes away from Obama in November based on these idiotic comments.

rick   June 25th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

YES WE CAN!!!!

OBAMA 08

Brian   June 25th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Ralph who?

Jose Lopez   June 25th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Choosing an Hispanic from California born in Texas clearly shows that Mr Nader wants to split the Hispanic vote of two of our largest states. As an Hispanic myself, I do not see where this ticket has anything to offer the Hispanic population except that it will bring us back to the Bush Era by trying to take votes away from Obama. Nader is just another candidate trying to keep America from moving forward. We need change in America and he offers solutions of the 60's and 70's. He is just another candidate that clings to old ideas and solutions.

amt, Fresno,CA   June 25th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

Nader I used to think you were borderline ok, now I am convinced you are a COMPLETE FOOL!! These remarks are off base, & have no place in modern day American progress, you need to retire & stay out of politics. Obama will be a Pres. for ALL the people. Obama for Pres 08.

Silvia Hall   June 25th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

I used to have respect for Nader (and I still believe this country needs at least another political party), but he just lost my respect by making that stupid comment. Any citizen born in this country has the right to be part of the political process regardless of race, gender and sex, so why are we still paying attention to this? Can the media concentrate on the the presidential candidates programs to inform the people instead of playing this "race" game? I am getting tired of this. We should just ignore these comments.

Obama 08

OBAMA 08!!!   June 25th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Mike stay focused gosh. This post was about Nader not McCain and his age.

Naders comments are racist. To say an African American person be it presidential candidate or whomever "talks white" when they don't sound like what stereotype people portray African Americans is insulting. Barack is not running to be President of all the black people in the country. He is reaching out to all Americans.

Both you and Nader need a reality check.

OBAMA 08!!!

IT IS TIME TO UNITE   June 25th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

I guess Obama has to start talking like how 50 cent raps so he can be considered as "talking black".

John   June 25th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Ralph nader really shoots straight from the hip.
I would never vote for the guy but it's hard to deny that he is pretty much always right on the money with his comments.

These are the kinds of things that americans are thinking about but would never say.

We all know Ralph won't win but he will keep them honest (at least as close to honest as a politician can ever be)

David   June 25th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Words can't explain what I'm feeling about you right now.
Obama is just being Obama and apparently there's something about him you like and it's very disturbing. Get over it, the man is a very smart, intelligent, man wheather he be black/white. It does not matter, it's about the issues for all races. Get over it!!!!!!!

President Obama 08 – name sounds real good!

James   June 25th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

It just goes to show you that no matter what their political leanings are (Republicans, Independents, Reagan Democrats 'whatever that is' and evangelicals) these OLD white guys (55 and over) by and large are uncomfortable with a black man being in the White House…simple as that…

They can't seem to wrap the idea around their minds that someone from some another community besides WASP would be able to be the front runner for the president for The United States of America…

What is wrong with how someone talks? I have known alot of Colored people talk more like a white person without all the color slang alot of times. ITs nothing new. It has alot to do with upbringing and surroundings… taken of the fact Obama was raised by his white grandparents it shouldnt suprise anyone that he doesnt have the common color slang. WHO CARES!!!???? What else can CNN come up with for NEWS?

KMAN   June 25th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Does anyone else have a problem with the declining copy editing standards of this and other media sources? To wit: "…it's seemingly racial overtones." Since when do we use the apostrophe after it for the possessive case? CNN shan't be "the most trusted name in news" if it keeps this up.

Thats exactly the problem with people seeing others as their gender, race, sexual orientation, first. As if every black persons number one problem is payday loans. Disgusting.

mol   June 25th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

It's not CNN's fault that the Ticker has been about Obama lately Catty. They tell it like it is and the American people have spoken- We Want Obama!! No educated, reasonable person would want to waste any time talking about McCain and all the whining he does.

Brian   June 25th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

I say Ralph Nader is single handedly responsible for the war in Iraq!!

Cindy   June 25th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Nader unfortunately his color is an issue for many in this country. The fact that he hasn't completely focused on the issues that plague the poor doesn't mean that he doesn't understand their plight and that he doesn't intend to address their specific problems but the reality is that there are still many whotes in america that are waiting for him to speak the "black talk" to give them a reason to not vote for him— it's the reality in America and he does need to be careful on how and when he approaches these topics!!

The man (Obama) is in a very tough spot— he can't appear to be too black and he can't appear to be too white— there's no other candidate is in this position!

Brandon   June 25th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Obama is not a different politician.

Susan, PA   June 25th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

I always wanted to say this loud becuase my boss is names Ralph. Thanks to the Nader dude, he is a big-time water-cooler topic.

Doc   June 25th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Interesting that Nader is the one who "plays the race card." Why would Nader care how Obama was talking – unless Nader himself had nothing new to say? Nader has run so many times and said the same things every time. *Who cares what Ralph Nader says!*

please   June 25th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Nader is obviously judging Obama without getting to know him, like a lot of people are. Obama chose to go to Chicago and work in the community instead of taking a high paid Washington job. He did do work to protect people from asbestos and lead. Ignorance is so disgusting!!

Moreover, I am an African American woman who went to one of the top 20 colleges in the country. What does "talking white" mean? I am so sick of racist bigots trying to put educated African Americans in a box. I love my family and my community less because I am an intelligent black woman? Raise your children to be tolerant, caring individuals. This type of prejudice needs to die out.

Yes We CAN!   June 25th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Jeff   June 25th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

I used to respect Nader, but now he's talking like an idiot. The first and foremost thing that Obama needs to do is get elected, period. Yeah, its great that Nader can take on all of these issues and rant and rave, but he has no chance of ever getting elected. Obama can't do anything to make any change if, like Ralph Nader, he doesn't get elected. I really don't understand Nader and think that he should get out of this race and get behind Obama and understand that change can only come by getting into power in the first place.

independent chris   June 25th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

As far as spoiler contests go, Bob Barr will outspoil Nader by 3 to 1. I was a bit worried about the Nader spectre until Barr got into it. Thank goodness the old crank will be cancelled out.

I THINK THAT IS ONE OF THE MOST RIDICULOUS STATEMENTS I EVER HEARD MR. NADER SAY. I AM A OBAMA SUPPORTER WHO LIKE MR. NADER, BUT THAT COMMENT WAS APPLAUDING. MR. OBAMA IS RUNNING TO HELP ALL AMERICANS AND SUGGEST OTHERWISE SICKENING. I THINK MR. OBAMA REALIZE WHAT 95% OF ALL AMERICANS ARE GOING THROUGH. IT IS PATHETIC THAT ALOT OF PEOPLE ARE GRASPING AT STRAWS WHEN IT COME TO MR. OBAMA, IF YOU DONT LIKE THE GUY FINE, BUT TO GO AROUND JUST TEARING HIM DOWN IS A SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS. WE ALL HAVE TO START LEARNING HOW TO WORK TOGETHER SERIOUSLY, BECAUSE I THINK WE HAVE BECOME THE LAUGHING STOCK FOR THE REST OF THE WORLD.

NADER '08 - SAY NO TO OBAMA   June 25th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

NADER = TRUTH

OBAMA = FALSE HOPE

L.V. from Minnesota   June 25th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

As an African American Barack Obama supporter I would really like to see him address one issue. The fact is that 90% of us blacks voted for him. Now even though it helped him win the nomination, I would really like him to address the fact that blacks are voting for him solely because he is black. I am supporting Obama because I happen to be informed and I agree with where he stands on most issues. I think it would be great if he addressed our community and tell us that he doesnt want us to vote for him simply because he is black. I understand that there is an extremely strong desire to see one of us in the White House but if we vote for this guy solely based on his race, then we are no better than the whites that vote for McShame because of Obamas race.

Ralph I love you, but you are dead wrong…. but I do understand that you need to bring exposure to your campaign. I encourage that all Americans give serious consideration to all candidates including 3rd party, and vote for the one who you believe will best address and deal with the issues that concern you.

For me… that candidate is Barack Hussien Obama!!!!

OBAMA SUPPORTER IN IOWA   June 25th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Ralph,

Put your hearing aid in your ear. You obviously haven't been listening to anything Obama has said. You also (obviously) haven't read either of his books.

He's already changed politics in America, just by being a candidate. What have you done?

Nicole H.   June 25th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Oh, my… public figures and politicians are always putting their foot in their mouths and then appologizing later, saying that they didn't mean it the way it came out, or "maybe I should have said it this way, or that way…" But this is absolutely irrevocable. It's pure stereotyping by a privleged white man. No way to take that back, but then who cares – no one even knows he's running anyway. What a bigot.

Didine - Maryland   June 25th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Ralph Nader, please give us a break. Why are you playing the race card? You don't have no chance to win this election. You are nut with your comment, please go home!

Disgusted   June 25th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

It's kind of sad to watch a man at the end of the trail. Instead of offering wisdom and insight to a younger generation, his discussion appears to be out of touch and irrelevant

Bob Shore   June 25th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Please Mr. Nader, retire while you still have a shred of reputation left.

" the number one thing that a black American politician aspiring to the presidency should be is to candidly describe the plight of the poor"

Only if he wants to be elected as the president of black America. But he's running to be elected as everyone's president. That's one of the many things he should do, yes, but not necessarily the first thing.

George   June 25th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Is racism so ingrained in the American psyche that folks seem unaware of when they are making idiotic racist comments?

Anna   June 25th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Isn't the whole point of a truly integrated society that one must not do *anything* simply because of the color of one's skin? The fact that Barack Obama is half African-American should not automatically determine which issues he chooses to focus on during his campaign and potential presidency. And anyone who says that Senator Obama isn't focusing on the living wage debate clearly has not been paying attention. Furthermore, Senator Obama isn't running for president of the United States of African-Americans, he's running for president of the United States. His attention should be helping citizens of all ages, genders, ethnicities, and sexual orientations. His past experience as a community organizer and the remarkable response and rapport he's seen on the campaign trail put him in a unique position to have perspective on issues facing all kinds of Americans – as it should be. I look forward to hearing from a candidate so in touch with communities that are not generally focused on in campaign seasons. I value Senator Obama's connections to the African-American community, and to communities of all kinds that are not getting the kind of help and support that they need. But I do not think his attention should be strictly limited to only issues challenging those communities. As a nation, we have many issues and concerns that need addressing and a good candidate, and Senator Obama is a good candidate, should be able to speak to both kinds. Nader's comment is ill-advised, slightly racist in tone, and the hallmark of a candidate who's forgotten the real reason to run as a Democratic nominee for the office of President of the United States of America. I'm disappointed in Mr. Nader.

celene   June 25th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Get ready cause there is no way if he wins that race will not be an issue on both sides.
There will be misunderstandings, angry and upset people over the most ridiculous things.
Cause thats all we have had for years..Misunderstandings based totally on the race of the person making the comments.

Rick FL   June 25th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Who cares what Nader thinks with this misguided race-baiting? He seems to be too much of a Republican lackey anyway.

It will not work this time.

For goodness sake! HE'S HALF WHITE! I don't understand the rationale that says that if you are dark complected, you are considered black. I don't personally agree with him politically, but I don't understand why his race has to be an issue. He is a well spoken, educated, intelligent candidate. Focus on the issues people!

ftljeff40   June 25th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Ralph Nadar needs to go crawl in a hole and stay there. He is the biggest egomaniac out there and he needs to stay out of the election and just shut up. This guy has failed at everything he has ever tried to do since his one victory concerning auto safety 40 years ago!

Another bitter old white man who needs to just fade away.

How about talking about the poverty that exist in the suburbs too. The inner cities may be worse off than other communities but poverty exist in other communities too. It is longer restricted to an Area, Mr. Nader.

These days, I see people of different races, in different communities struggling to feed their families, struggling to keep a roof over their heads, struggling to buy the essentials. So let's discuss ways in which we might eliminate poverty altogether.

If I may finish dear Ralph's quote in a way I would hope someone of his standing might consider:

"act irrespective of colour".

Ralph, out of context or not, you sound beyond racist – you sound ignorant.

The greatest enemy is not red or blue, democratic or republican, it is ignorance.

keep it simple   June 25th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Nader, I used to think highly of your efforts for the 'good'. I still do. But it would be the higher road if you proclaimed those isssues for your self rather than bringing them up by claiming to know if they are important or not for another. Our lives will be better if poloticians would stop complaining about other poloticians and just let us know what they stand for…. then we can choose who to support instead of who to hate.

Not being fooled   June 25th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

Obama is talking white because the words he uses are not his own. The majority of his campaign people are white so thats why he is talking white. The words are not his own as he is a black man being used as a puppet and the strings are being pulled by the white man. Obama is a fake and should not be taken seriously and that is why McCain, who seems to be a more genuine person, will win the presidency and the dmocrats will have nobody else to blame but themselves. They selected their nominee rather than take the choice of the voters who clearly voted for Clinton and who had the majority votes. Clinton should have been the nominee but I suppose because she is a woman and the male ego among the DNC and the superdelegates were too much to get the right candidate as the nominee.

Nader is an idiot   June 25th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

Former Republican supporting Obama   June 25th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

I am absolutely baffled and stunned by Nader’s comments, comments that I believe are dead wrong and shamefully racists at their core!

Nader is utterly irrelevant this election cycle, and perhaps this is why he feels the need to unnecessarily inject race into this election. I don’t have a problem discussing racial issues in a Presidential Election; however, I do have a problem with unfounded and spurious racial arguments. Nader ought to be ashamed and should apologize to the Obama campaign and the American people for these ridiculous comments!

There are many things different about Obama than simply his racial/ethnic heritage and skin color. He represents exactly the sort of change that needs to take place not only in the ballistic mind of Nader, but in the minds of so many other Americans who insist on maintaining blind racial ignorance. The fact that Nader has made these comments provides stronger evidence for me that Obama is exactly the kind of President that we need.

MD in Oklahoma   June 25th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

Ralph, remember he worked as a community organizer on the south side of Chicago; do you even know what it's like there? What have you done lately to help out in these types of comminities?

You politically correct a holes are so annoying. This article is exactly what Nader was talking about- you can't point out a fact, let alone refuse to vote or support Obama, without being a racist. He's a got a good personality, so what's wrong with him? How could you not vote for him? You must be racist.

"When Ralph Nader decides to change his race to African American then he can talk about what an African American politician should be concerned about?" — When Obama decides to change his race to White then he can talk about what a White American politician should be concerned about.

Felice Judkins   June 25th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

What a stupid guy! I'm African-American and it has always boggled my mind when people accuse an African American of "talking white" Please tell me what does that ignorant statement mean. Give me a break! It's sad and amusing at the same time to hear so-called educated people say dumb stuff. What a sad commentary is that the cover is being lifted off of the vile and insedious poison of racism in this country. Simply because of the color of Obama's skin should not be why you vote or not vote for him. This country is in crisis and I want to know what are the policies of the candidates and how is it going to affect change in my life , my daughter's life and us as a nation. I will say this, at least the Klan says how they feel and stands up for what they believe in, but it is the low life cowards who are wearing a mask and have a racist heart and tries to pretend that they are tolerant of others. Nadar is simply an idiot!!!!!!

Kat, Huntington, West Virginia   June 25th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

wow–who are the obama supporters going to blame for "playing the race card" now that Bill and Hillary aren't available, or is this their fault too? Barack…pick hillary for your VP or wave goodbye to the white house. Over 50 % of Democrats voted for HER…and this one will not support you unless she is on the ticket. For the first time ever I will vote for the Green Party.

upstate NY woman past 50   June 25th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Nader seems to think all African Americans are poor and have to be protected and "educated" by people like him. Nader reveals more of himself than he probably thinks.

Janet   June 25th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Nader is part of the disgruntled old white past, and he knows it. He gained prominence with the EPA and has failed five times to win the presidency. He is one of the pathetic whites that grew up seeing blacks portrayed as buffoons or household workers and that's what he expects of Barack Obama. His statement about Barack talking white shows his racism. He is probably against miscegenation. God I can't believe there are still people in the United States like this, let alone running for president. Anyone seen David Duke lately?

Jeff D, South Bend, IN   June 25th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Ralph, you are a sad man desperately grasping for the spotlight again, when you are long past your prime. Just like Clinton did during the primary.

Come to Chicago and see the work he has done for real people in this community, before you spout off about something for which you haven't a clue.

Let's put his record of helping this community against yours.

I rest my case.

Ed, Santa Fe NM   June 25th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

CNN do you have to print EVERY stupid, moronic thing said about Obama? They crawl out from under their rocks and start yapping abou racist crap and religious crap and ethnic crap and you print every word.

I don't know who's worse: Nader or CNN.

Ariana   June 25th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

I can't stand Nader, but I think he has a good point. Obama doesn't want to appear too black or too comfortable with Muslims.

Dylan   June 25th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Well, I understand what Ralph is saying, it's not politically correct so everyone pretends like they don't get it. Our society has losers for a reason – so at least somebody can speak the subconscious truth that is not allowed into mainstream thinking (possibly for good reason as it is not becoming to speak in racial terms in the polite world. However, what Nader is saying is not inaccurate).

I thought Obama was accused of being too black, or was that too Christian, or not Christian enough, or was he too Muslim? This gets confusing; there are too many groups who want to call him names for attention. Here is one name we can all agree on; Ralph Nadar is an idiot.

karlie   June 25th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Nader is sucha moron. Do what politicians focus on the poor trailer park residents? The plight of the poor white people in the hills? Obama will be the president of the USA, not just the president of the african american population. I guess that Nader will say anything to get some attention. I hadn't actually seen him in the news for a few weeks.

John from LA   June 25th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Great comments Ralph-FINALLY someone is telling the truth about what's going on in this country during this political season!!!

And for Jim-who just posted-Stop comparing BO to JFK-All the young in this country and some of the boomers are sooooo desperate to compare BO to the Kennedy Clan. I thought BO was his own man-not the politics of old!

Tjstelten   June 25th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

WHATS THE SURPRISE ABOUT OBAMA TALKING WHITE. HALF OF HIM IS WHITE. NADER IS A JERK, AND FRANKLY NO-ONE CARES WHAT HE THINKS. IF YOUR TRYING TO FILL SPACE-CNN-GO FOR THE WEATHER–AT LEAST WE MAY LEARN SOMETHING….

Jose Lopez   June 25th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

Mr. Nader talks as if he was rally concerned about the poor in America but every time that he has made a bid for the White House he always goes after the Democrats for not doing enough when it is the Republican party that has never wanted to deal with America's poor. His remarks about Obama being half African-American are in poor taste and I find them to be racial to say the least. I used to think that Naders Raders were really concerned about America's future but all I see is that Ralph Nader is just another candidate that wants to keep America from moving forward.

Ray   June 25th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

The more Nader talks, the more idiotic he sounds. He's already revealed himself to be nothing more than an egomaniac by embarking his futile campaign once again this year when the Democrats have a great chance of actually beating the GOP. Now he's trying to play the race card in the most bumbling, offensive manner. What a moron.

Stephen H   June 25th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

Why would anyone pay attention to this nutjob? This is absolutely unbelieveable that he would command any media attention whatsoever. What a moron and complete idiot!

SHIRLEY-OHIO   June 25th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

When Obama came out and said "Oh and they are going to say did I mention he was black", and everybody got their underwear tangled up you know where and say Oh he shouldn't have said that. Well this is the very reason he said it. Obama is brillant. He knew the race card would be coming.

As flava-flav would say wooooooooooooooooooooooow.

Richard   June 25th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

Of all the things Nader could focus on why focus on race. I mean I haven't heard him mention Hillary Clinton's race let alone gender or John McCain's race. Is it that for Ralph race is only relevant if it is a non white candidate? Ralph I had admired some of your efforts and opinions over the years but it is interesting that all of a sudden these race views start emerging. Could it be that they have been there (a focus on race) all along and just now started to surface?

saga for Obama   June 25th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

CNN Please post
"I mean, first of all, the number one thing that a black American politician aspiring to the presidency should be is to candidly describe the plight of the poor, especially in the inner cities and the rural areas, and have a very detailed platform about how the poor is going to be defended by the law, is going to be protected by the law, and is going to be liberated by the law," Nader.
is Mr.Nader implying that because Mr. Obama is black his main platform should be the plight of all the poor Blacks livin in da ghetto? that is raciest in its implication, poverty is not just a Black issues especially when over 50% of the people on welfare are whites. Mr. Nader as an African American i am so disappointed in you but too i am hardly surprised. when 65% of whites polled they said race is an issues regarding America, the land of the free…indeed!
some of you feel justified in your fear, hate and ignorance….well, so did Hitler!!! we see how wrong he was too.
Mr. Nader, what sickens me the most is YOU ARE A PUBLIC OFFICIAL.

Peggy - Tx   June 25th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

“The number one thing that a black American politician aspiring to the presidency SHOULD BE… ”

Nader you are so full of yourself.

You have zero authority to tell anyone what they should be, let alone to divide politicians by skin color and say what agenda each should have based on skin color.

windu   June 25th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

Another supposedly liberal person that wants to keep black people in the box. If you're black, you have to talk a certain way, be concerned solely about "black issues," etc. Otherwise, you're not "authentic." A potent combination of idiocy and gall.

Frank   June 25th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

When is Nader going to shut up? His endless mantra – "there's no difference between Republicans and Democrats" – is idiotic, yet it continues to form the only plank of his platform.

He made great waves with that mantra in 2000, and many Americans were fooled into believing him. And now, 8 years later, does anyone actually think it's true? Does anyone think that if Gore had won in 2000, we would have withdrawn from Kyoto, denied science about global warming for 7 years, invaded Iraq, tortured prisoners, turned the Justice Department (and just about every other gov't agency) into a tool of the permanent Republican campaign, put Alito and Robertson the US Supreme Court, etc………?

I am ashamed that Nader's running mate is a fellow San Franciscan for whom I once had some respect.

senior white female   June 25th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

Nader is wrong. Obviously he knows nothing about Barack Obama. Does he even try to inform himself? Again, I say if you have not taken the time to inform yourself about someone's message and platform you have no right to criticize. Read his books, watch his interviews, go to his web site. Everything he has worked for his whole life is for those who have no voice, the inner cities, the rural areas, the poor (black or white). White guilt? Sounds like Nader is showing his own inner feelings.

Vote Nader   June 25th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

Why has his presidential campaign received little media attention? It's not like he isn't campaigning. So the media could report on his rallies. He's getting on ballots, at least until the Democrtic Party starts blocking and filing lawsuits again. He consistently polls around 5-7% (when he is part of the poll).

Good for Nadar. He's the only one so far who has the guts to say it like it really is!! Everyone else thinks it, but are cowards. Barack has never called any blacks out for their racism towards whites, Hispanics, American Indian. Makes you think what he really feels.

Joe   June 25th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

CNN: Why don't you write something in your "ticker" that talks about policy, or– for a change– McCain's recent and frequent gaffes?

Or how about do some due diligence and cover the Iraq War better?

Bring it up a notch, CNN.

obamacrat   June 25th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

I guess the lesson we've all learned during the campaign season is that if you want to go from being irrelevant to being relevant, even if for just a single news cycle, then say something about Obama regarding race (ala Nadar) or religion ( ala Dobson).

Linden   June 25th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Nader, you used to be relevant. This just proves you are no longer relevant to anyone. It's time to step aside.

Jim in Atlanta   June 25th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Thanks Ralph for telling it like it is. You speak the truth; however, since you dared to breach the topic of race as a white man, you will immediately be labeled a “racist” by the Obama camp. It is clear that Obama is willing to throw the race card at both friend and foe alike. He did it to the Clintons, Gov. Rendell, and Geraldine Ferraro for stating the obvious, and now you are next in line.

People, please stop this insanity and join the millions of former Hillary supporters by voting for John McCain for president. This problem will only get worse if Obama is actually elected.

Still for Hill 12’

JeffRob   June 25th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Inconsequential is right. Who are we talking about again?

Dave, denver co   June 25th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Obama is not "half african american". His father is an African born in Kenya. His mother was born in the U.S. Making him one hundred percent African american, the very definition of. Nader should shut his trap. If it wasn't for him, W never would have been within striking distance of stealing the 2000 election. He is a disgrace.

Pat Va   June 25th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

Talking "white?" What does that mean? I'm an African-American baby boomer and have been accused of this all of my life. If in fact you're meaning using proper English ( nouns, verbs, adverbs, etc.) in a sequential and meaningful order, then perhaps Senator Obama is guilty of that. I happen to believe it is the essence of the man.

Nader…you need to sit down and perhaps, at your leisure, peruse "The Audacity of Hope" and "Dreams Of My Father" in order to make a more informed (less biased) statement.

James Alder   June 25th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

Catty,

You are absolutely right about CNN's bias. CNN is no longer a trusted news network in my household.

But on the subject, by making this kind of comments Nader is trying to cut into McCain's constituency. Nader may be a spoiler for McCain in November.

wow – that is ridiculous that he said that!

I think a lot of people have been pointing fingers and talking about racism a lot lately, but there's only one way to move forward – change YOURSELF. That's the first step.

What is WRONG with trying to help bridge that gap? That is what Obama is trying to do I feel.

What better person to do it then someone who is half white/ half-black?

Obama Supporter   June 25th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

I love how Nader is such an expert about what a black American politician trying to be president has to do. Certainly I want my president to care about the poor, but not because they are black or white or green – because they are American.

Nader really isn't doing himself any favors.

Greg, NY   June 25th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Catty June 25th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

Anyone notice that the ONLY topic on this ticker thus far is Obama???

CNN, your bias is showing!

You know Catty, you're absolutely right. They should post an article on how just last night John "Where'd I leave McCain" said that a draft would be ok if we were in World War 3.

In 2006 he was quoted as saying we are in the beginning stages of a WW3.

Mike   June 25th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

It's amazing to me!

If anyone speaks ill of the "Great One" (Obama), they are being racist, if they respond to his comments in return, then they are being paranoid.

Racism still exist in this country, and for those of you who do not believe this, you are simply fooling yourselves.

Once in that polling booth, people will vote for their respective candidate (yet may post favorable comments here simply out of guilt).

It is a disgrace that Obama supporters slam McCain with such disrespect simply because of his age. McCain is a GREAT hero who has endured.

What has Obama accomplished, NOTHING!

I will NOT vote for Obama, and I'm proud to admit it, he is racist, his wife is racist and if this makes me racist, so be it.

I personally believe that I'm not racist, simply voting for the most qualified candidate.

Lots of people feel the same way, though they are too PC to admit it.

Sharon   June 25th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

He is right and had the guts to say it. It wasn't racial overtones, it was just the truth. Obama knows how to play the game. But as always if you disagree you are a racist. CNN you probably won't show this.

Now hold on fellas…he might have a point here. I am an African American. I am one of Obama's strongest supporters. While I don't believe that Obama is 'TALKING WHITE', I strongly believe that most of the issues affecting the inncer city, ghettos, trailar parks and low income earner, should be brought to light. I think we've heard enough of the lofty rhetoric from both candidates. They should also include the small man. That being said, Nadar needs some huge. I mean really, does he think he'll win?

These are statements without any stated conclusion. To what conclusions is Mr. Nader trying to lead us?

Susan from Scotts Valley   June 25th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

Obama will be a president for ALL the people of the United States, not just African Americans. There are issues he is addressing that deal with poverty and inequality but if they were the only basis of his campaign why even run because he couldn't get elected. There are OTHER issues like energy, taxes, health care, education, and national security that he must also address.

Nader is just trying to get media attention.

Women for Obama   June 25th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

As an educated African American I am really disappointed in Nader's comments. Maybe he feels black people should talk like they just came out of th latest Jay-Z video or something. It's not about talking "white" Nader, its about being educated and speaking intelligently on issues that you obivously lack and pretend to know about the black community. The black community has bigger problems than "payday loans". How about gas, home forclosure, healthcare, and violence in the urban communities. Nader, just sit this Presidential year out and slowly take your foot out of your mouth.

nikki in atl ga   June 25th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Wow!! Last time I checked both white and black ppl supported Obama for various reasons. This has to go down as one of the most ridiculous comments I've heard in a while…(at least since 3rd grade). While I'm not suprised at Nader's comments, I can relate. As a african-american, college graduate, growing up in Northern Ohio, I experienced the same kind of talk…"you talk white"….ummm, what exactly is talking white?? LOL!! I thought it was English doo-fiss!!!

How is this anything but racist?

Wow this guy just sealed his fate, most of the U.S is going to hate him now, what an idiot, seems everyone wants their 15 minute's of fame saying something about Barrack Obama be it good or bad because they know he will make history and he will fight for the people! Obama is my generation JFK, but who the heck does this guy think he is!?!

Anyone notice that the ONLY topic on this ticker thus far is Obama???

CNN, your bias is showing!

Nader, can you read?   June 25th, 2008 1:11 pm ET

In Obama's memoir, Dreams from My Father, he talks about the inner city projects and how he got the city to inspect the building for asbestos, etc. and demanded that they show proof! Nader, how about doing your research before opening your mouth? Obama worked to register voters, gather protests, meeting, etc. with the people of Chicago.

Stop trying to remain relevant, Nader, and please read and think before you speak.

It strikes me as odd that one presidential hopeful would tell the other on how to run their campaign. Especially one with absolutely no chance of winning.

THANK YOU RALPH NADER!!! YOU'LL BE HELPING THE OBAMA CAMPAIGN BY TAKING A PORTION OF THE REPUBLICAN VOTE WITH THESE COMMENTS!
