Does it bother any of you Obama supporters that Obama supports ethanol (that drives up food prices and takes more energy to produce than you get out of it when you burn it) b/c he takes money from ethanol lobbyists? The man is against safe zero emitting nuclear energy, won't let us drill in our own country, and is for more coal...the same coal that is mined in his home state hmmm. McCain while not perfect in his energy voting record, is clearly superior to Obama for at least this independent voter.

John Mcbush has voted against EVERY energy efficiency policy since he has been in office, over 30 yrs. Believe me people he could care less about energy, conservation or the environment. He is just jumping on Obama's bandwagon. Mcbush will drop these issues if he is elected. Look at his voting record and see for yourself! BTW Obama has a comprehensive energy plan on his website. Check it out.

Nader is speaking the truth. That's why you're all appalled. The Emperor has no clothes. Are you all so silly as to believe Obama's not playing on white guilt in America of all places? Where do YOU live???

And black voters, don't hold your breath for help with issues facing urban America and YOU. You all were thrown under the bus all through the primaries, and you fell for it! Bill Clinton was the best thing that ever happened to you, as you will learn starting in January, 2009.

Nader doesn't expect to be elected. Unlike Obama, Ralph has nothing to lose here, that's why he can afford to speak truth. Don't forget you're only hearing from rabid party supporters until November.

Obama's brilliant! The nay sayers are just jealous that the nation is excited about someone who is pandering, who thinks, who tells the truth....... though some of you wont believe it.

I would love to ask McCain & his supporters a few important questions:

WHAT ABOUT THE $10 TRILLION IN NATIONAL DEBT, THAT BUSH IS LEAVING HOW WILL YOU PAY FOR IT?!

HOW WILL YOU PAY FOR THE WAR IN IRAQ THAT IS COSTING OUR NATION...... $1.38 BILLION A DAY?!

WILL YOU ATTACK IRAN? IF SO HOW WILL YOU PAY FOR IT?!

AND ONE MORE THING, MCCAIN SUPPORTERS, ARE YOU BETTER OFF FINANCIALLY TODAY THAN YOU WERE 8 YEARS AGO?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm?

You people don't know what you are talking about. Cap and trade system is not intended to solve the energy crisis. It is to fight global warming, and the only other solution would be a carbon tax. Neither are meant to help consumers but to limit emissions. If you don't believe in or care about global warming or its effects, then you're better off really... but don't bring this into energy politics.
The problem with energy (and high gas prices) is three fold: 1. world demand is increasing; 2. a lot of oil producers and consumers wish to switch from using dollars to euros as oil currency (Russia, Venezuela, Kuweit or they already did: Iran, together - 25% of world oil production!); 3. low investment rates (to stimulate the US economy) encourage oil speculation but more importantly negatively affect dollar standing as international currency in the world. You have to have dollars to be able to buy oil. If oil trade is switched to another currency, you could still use dollars for high investment returns provided investment rates are reasonable. If neither works dollars are trash, which can become a serious problem considering that half to 2/3 of all dollar money in circulation is outside the US. By the way Saddam Hussein switched Iraq's oil trade to euros and got the war... Iran is doing 80% of its oil exports in euros now... anybody? But I digress.
The ways out of the crisis are uncertain. Maybe to somehow stimulate economic growth, stabilize markets, to convince the world to keep using dollars as oil currency (right, lets shake up the Middle East again Mr McCain, bully everybody into liking dollars). The perfect solution would be a switch to alternative energies which McCains wants and Obama promises. If only it was that simple. US off-shore drilling is not going to affect world prices in any noticeable way. Gas holidays are silly. Prizes for fuel efficient cars have been already offered. They will go to a big corporation such as GM, not an 'individual' who we are kidding. Nuclear energy might have a chance. Under any scenario oil prices are not going down significantly... ever. At least Obama has decency (or aide's smarts) to acknowledge that.

There are things we can do to make the transition to a more energy efficient sustainable society. Some, like simple conservation, will have immediate benefits. Others, like the development of viable alternative energy sources, will take longer.

The real impediments to making the changes we need to make as a society aren’t technical. They are educational and social. People first need to understand that the decline of oil will have an impact on every aspect of the way we live. It already is. And secondly – and this will be the hardest part – we have to accept the fact that we simply can’t continue to live as we do.

Not long ago Dick Cheney pronounced with great fervor that “changing our lifestyle isn’t an option.” Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who applauded his comment. The only real choice we have is whether we will go kicking a screaming into the second half of the fossil fuel era, or whether we will do so with a comprehensive plan and a commitment that reaching a sustainable energy future is a global imperative. IF we continue to think that our energy security is predicated on getting the last drops of oil out from under other peoples lands, we are doomed. We will squander the opportunity that we still have to make the transition to a sustainable future fighting wars over who gets to turn the lights out at the end of civilization as we know it.

If the worst should happen I will get no solace from Obama in the White House, but I will certainly enjoy seeing tens of millions of Americans eager to toss him out of office in 2012 after they've had four years of energy shortages and extraordinarily high prices from his naive and foolish policies. He may get the 2012 votes of those who owe him for their "green" bureaucratic jobs" but he'll lose the votes of everyone who gets stuck paying the bills with nothing to show for it in return.

Of course, Obama may have invented a perpetual motion machine - but I doubt it. Then again, his supporters believe he can turn water into wine, so perhaps he can turn vapid speeches into a new source of energy!

Do you people actually read real stuff, or have kneejerk reactions to what CNN says?

Obama has one of the best energy plans anyone has ever put forward. It probably scares the crap out of Republicans and big oil companies because of how quickly this country could get off oil. They'll probably find a way to charge you for sunlight and wind, though. :P

McCain and the Republicans are only offering you more of the same crap that got us $4 gas and oil over $130 a barrel.

I am tired of listening to Obama. Of late, he has started to come off as arrogant, as well as his staff. Instead of talking like the politician of old, knocking down your opponent so the words you use to talk about yourself sound grand, Mr Obama, why not change. Why not JUST talk about what you will do, allow me and millions of others to listen to McCain talk about what he will do and then make our decisions.

You still have to win me over. I am not alone in this. Be the candidate of change. Be the candidate that will not knock but will show the world that we can all work together. At the end of this race whether you win or not you will have to look McCain in the face and work with him. How can you after you say so many of his decisions and policies are bad and ill-conceived. I can understand McCain doing it but he never said he was the candidate of change, you did!

If it's proven that a diesel car can run off used canola oil, I repeat Used Canola oil think McDonald's used canola oil thrown away in a year, why grow food to use as transport energy.

NO MORE NUCLEAR PLANTS!

NANOSOLAR is the future right now and if the candidates, either one of them, is serious about getting America free of it's oil dependence and cleaning up the environment, they better sink their energy, so to speak, into new, cutting edge technologies that can do it safely!

I am laughing at all these people saying they want results RIGHT now. It isn't going to happen, the oil companies are going to continue raising prices because THEY CAN.

you want what you want when you want it and you refuse to change your own habits or adapt.

Europe can do it, so can we. More public transportation and smaller cars - and help the environment at the same time.

My husband & I are riding our bikes to work once a week now and to run errands close to work. That will save us almost $100 over 4 months (while it's nice out) Much more than the gas tax holiday would've done.

People can change, they CHOSE not to!

Amazing how everyone points out that drilling will take years (4, 6, 8+) to help with prices but ignore the idea that even if we created a source of alternative fuel that was cost efficient (without billions in subsidies, sorry ethanol) and still maintained performance and convenience for the average American. How long do you think it would take to test it fully, produce new vehicles, and get them to market? Don't be so naive Obama supporters, there is no magic answer to this very real problem. Oil is the only near future way to keep America running, we need to establish our independence by opening the opportunity to explore our areas offshore and in Anwar. Not to mention building efficient refineries, etc... I would guess less than 5% of cars around today were in existence the last time we built a new refinery.

Can Sen. Obama guarantee that the 150 billion he is going to spend on alternative will find the answer? The answer is no. We need an energy strategy that focuses on what's proven and known and not on a dream .. and yet we can't stop the dream because of what's proven and known. That is exactly what Sen. McCain is proposing. We will need more domestic oil, more nuclear, cleaner coal and conservation to help until the next energy source can be discovered.

Obama's site clearly shows where he and McCain differ, but it doesn't adequately cover the near-term conversion and requirement for increased oil supplies that our nation will need for the next 10-20 years. Remember, people are not going to suddenly throw their old cars away and buy a new one that doesn't require gasoline or their homes which burn fuel oil and natural gas. This is where the democrat model falls short. We need increased oil supplies for the short-term while we transition over. This is where McCain has the advantage over Obama. That, and he was first with a detailed plan, and the public has already registered that in their minds eye. Obama now needs to come up with something that will realistically cover the next generation's energy needs.

Its hard to make sense when trying to be a maverick and Bush wannabe at the same time....it just doesn't work

And McCain now all the sudden 'cares' about the environment.

Obama has big oil and corn ethanol producers pushing his agenda be careful what you wish for. Ethanol is not the answer it is actually a bigger problem in the equation. Carbon taxes profit taxes capital gains taxes waking up in the morning taxes it will never end with this guy. The people who are blinded by rhetoric and call this nonscence visionary need to look at the ultimate cost of his trillion $ spending spree. If spending that much to get minimal job increases cuz 5 million is a joke is worth it to you by all means vote for the tax and spend guy. Clinton had a great economy because he was fiscally responsible not spend happy.

I have a vision like the Dali-bama except if we don't start drilling now OPEC can cut off or charge us enough to pay $10 a gallon gas. The dali can't control our economy and his only plan is to tax us until we bleed oil..

As a scientist working in the energy sector for the past decade, I have to say that anyone who thinks McCain has a clue here is oblivious or in denial. Remember when the British Empire kept denying that her influences were waning during the early part of the 20th century? This is McCain's energy policy in a nutshell.

Amarissa, it's called networking. He's getting the information out in as many media outlets as possible. Obama commands a mastery of using the internet and the media to aid in supporting his campaign. Something McCain is sadly out of touch with. You will change your mind, Amarissa, and so will the millions of others. If you take the time to research all the issues McCain stands for, and how closely aligned he is with Bush, you will change. Change we all can believe in. Obama '08.

Nancy Pelosi says we need a new President in Washington, who is independent, and has no past ties. Well, what about congress ... who the majority of America dislikes ... and who didn't do anything they promised when reelected 2 years ago. Let's take Nancy's advice, and let's start by replacing the old congress ... and, first of all, let's replace Nancy Pelosi.

Obama's level of proactivity in getting his message out is admirable. It makes me hopeful that the bob-and-weeve game of posturing through saying nothing definitively might be ending. McCain seems to be doing the same, but maybe not as effectively.

Overall, this campaign feels far more substantive than any in recent memory.
