WASHINGTON (CNN) — Presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama made a private, last-minute stop at Walter Reed Army Medical Center Saturday morning where he presumably visited with wounded veterans, though campaign aides both on and off site would not confirm, and a press pool was not allowed in the facility.

While the Illinois senator was inside, Obama's campaign simultaneously announced he would be making trips to both the Middle East and to Europe shortly this summer.

3 FOR a DOLLAR!!!!!

arnoldray   June 28th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

He can't. Because when he does the new Iraqi leadership is going to tell him,

"Thanks a lot for nothing, we have safety for our women and children and you are such a pansy Obambi (HAHAHA), spineless, heartless weak little man that you would leave us to be slaughtered. We are almost ready to defend ourselves and secure our future and secure a supply of free-market oil but you are willing to throw all of this progress down the toilet, just to gain power, thanks a lot you evil heartless gutless wussy of a half man. You don't even care that we are so close to success. You must really hate us that bad. And just what sect of Muslim are you anyway? You must be Sunni that is why you want us to be destroyed. Your name is Hussein just like the dictator that killed our people. He was Sunni too. That is why you want to see us fail. We are now living in peace but you want to ruin all that. We HATE you, get out of our country and never come again. You are not welcome here".

saga for Obama   June 28th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

you see this was for the Vets not the cameras. get off of the photo op trip. not every thing is for the image, at least Obama knows how to do things for the betterment of the soul.
all McCain does for the soul is…SELL IT OUT

Willow, from Iowa   June 28th, 2008 2:58 pm ET

Obama visited Iraq in 2006. He says he won't go back until nearer the convention.

I think its great that he's visiting with wounded soldiers at Walter Reed. He always did care more for the CARE of the military soldiers than the other nominee.

virginia nielsen   June 28th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

Yes,he did in 2006 and probably he is going there this summer to see ,personally, the stupid killing in a stupid war that is a result of a unauthorized stupid invasion ruled by a stupid and arrogant president called George W. Bush !!! I wish good luck to Senator Obama on his plans for our future. God bless America !!! OBAMA 2008-2016 !!!

Remy   June 28th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

Willy
Iraq is not part of USA and Bush invaded Iraq after telling LIES …LIES..LIES..LIES.

But I am sympathetic with the soldiers who are dead or wounded. Sen. Obama will save more young American lives.

Debby, NJ   June 28th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Mr. Change is doing the important thing by taking look at those here on the homefront suffering to…Where the hell is McShame, why hasn't he visted Walter Reed?

2Set   June 28th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Hey Willy, Obama is not an oil pimp like the Bushes. He doesn't need to make sure his company is getting the right amount of oil. He just needs to bring the troops home and let the Iraqis take care of themselves and focus on taking care of our own dam country.

virgin islands princess   June 28th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Good Obama. Show that warmonger who really supports the troops. And don't forget about Schip, Medicaid, and SSI for the territories. Our boys shed blood in Iraq too.

P.S. Willy: he's been to Iraq. You're the one who hasn't left the country.

Sebastian   June 28th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

Talking to troops … away from superior officers … is THE BEST WAY to get the unvarnished truth about Iraq and Afghanistan ….

Forget John McCain's trip to the sanitized Green Zone.

Larry Buchas   June 28th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Hey Silly Willy,

Barack's visiting Iraq & Afghanistan in a couple weeks. As for the comparison to Jimmy Carter, I think Barack will be compared more to John F. Kennedy.

Either way, it's better than a 3rd term of Bush policies.

And guess what? Barack will take care of our Iraqi veterans than John McCain. Barack's got my support & my vote.

Rusty, Portland   June 28th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

Let's see, is there a group left that Obama has not pandered to ?
Has he been to a midget convention or should I say a small people's convention? Surely he has something for them too.

george   June 28th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

mccain has visited more foreign countries than american states. his priority should be to govern this country, to pay attention to the multitudes in social and economic poverty in American urban areas. mccain's criticism of obama for not being as well-traveled as himself is shortsighted and somewhat revealing about where his priorities lie.

Ben   June 28th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

why is evryone down on Jimmy Carter? Was it because the nation went into finacial probles during his reign. Something like we are suffering now? Or is it because he didn't send troops to bomb and destroy Iran when they took Americans hostage? Maybe?
Let me remind you not one American young man died, and all the hostages were released unharmed.
A far cry from Bush or McCains philosophy to bomb and destroy every thing in sight. Which included over 4,000 of our finest sons.

JIMMY   June 28th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

Barack doesnt show-boat. He had a private conversation with our brave men and women. No fanfare, just Barack sitting down with our brave troops. No fake photo-op. Just Barack and the troops, no media.
I respect that.

Paula Diane   June 28th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

Willy..give him a break!!! He has 4 months to run an election campaign and he can't go everywhere at once!! geeze..he isn't president yet and his duties don't begin yet! McCain went over because he had a year to kick back while the primary for the Dem's was happening.. get real. You go to Iraq.. you don't need months of security planning…

Jermaine   June 28th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

As an Officer in the US Army, OBAMA has the ARMY's support. Most of us Soldiers want to leave IRAQ, we R just foing our job and go when told too, but we want it to END. OBAMA is a transformational leader and he has shown a deep undestanding of the PARADIGM shift that is needed in America and that the rest of the world has already shown. He was the one Senator who outed and did something about Walter Reed last year, he push for the Veteran G.I. Bill from the jump, and has been a true friend to Veterans. OBAMA does not just talk about change, he is change, he brings about change, he work for change and he has the judgement to ensure AMERICA adapt to the times and catch up with the rest of the world. As an officer, Soldier and Leader in the US Military, I look forward to November when in a President OBAMA we will have a National Leader in the mold of Lincoln, JFK and Reagan who make up believe., and reach for heights unknown. It is time to stop the fear mongering, it is time to be concious about the world issues and it is time America leades with soft Diplomacy. It is time to turn weapons into plow shares, it is time to rise to the potential as a people and as a nation. It is time to CHANGE AMERICA and in doing so we will CHANGE THE WORLD. One Army at a time ARMY STRONG, AMERICA STRONG! OBAMA-HAGEL 2008,/2012; OBAMA-GORE; OBAMA-WEBB; OBAMA-ZINNI! The possibilities are endless! A UNITED AMERICA

OBAMA-LINCOLN!

DJ   June 28th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

Willy, the american people has listen to every gimmick, lie, terrible policy the Republicans has offered. I can not even beleive there is one person on the planet that believe the republcans have the ability to repair the damage they have cause. The Republicans inherited a great economy with prosperity, low trade deficit, surplus for the government and he couln't even maintained it. So why would any reasonable person even think another Republican John McBush would do anything different. Matter of fact his positions are 95% in line with Bush. If another republican is elected this country will become a third world country. George Bush is ranked by the world leaders as one of the most dangerous person in the world below the ranking of some top terrrists in the world.

Michael   June 28th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

Perhaps you should read the next blog post. He announced plans to visit Iraq.

LaTreetha E. Sharpley   June 28th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

Today, the first day in all my 66 years that I really saw and felt what this great nation is about. I attended an Obama, meeting in my county. I saw people of all ages, ethic backgrounds and political parties. This is truly a wonderful time in America. All people coming together to say "yes we can". Then to see that Senator Obama vistied the veterans and no press allowed, only reinforces this great feeling I have for my wonderful country and the change that is in the air.

Fed up in Washington   June 28th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

What took him so long? He should have visited when the scandals broke about how poor the care was at Walter Reed.

willey
you dont even know who jimmy carter is. he was great
so till you grow up you should not talk about your elders

YES WE WILL   June 28th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

So Willy are you going to vote for McCain? Do you want our military in Iraq for another 100 years? McCain is a nasty old man with a hot headed temper. McCain speeches seems like he is at a funeral. Do you like the way he laid in the bed when he was being held captive asking for his wife. The wife he dumped after he had an affair with the rich one he is married to now. Wow he is a great guy! A lot of moral values!

Barack is going to Iraq and the Middle East this summer. We must have someone that can work towards lowing gas prices, creating jobs, work on housing and health care. Barack Obama is that person.

I know the soldiers Barack visited this morning were proud to see him and he was proud to see them.

Michael, Lorain, Ohio   June 28th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

Hey Willy since you're a republican, why haven't you visited Iraq? Speaking of Iraq, we attacked Iraq because we thought they had WMDs. In 7+ years we've spent $1 trillion on a false claim of WMDs yet NO ONE HAS TAKEN responsibility for the now proven false accusations. Oh, and don't try to pretend you're a rogue Clinton supporter, when really all you are is a Operation Chaos Ditto head.

Why does a candidate need to go to a war zone to campaign??

Clay in Texas   June 28th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

I can understand the right-wingers apparent anger towards Barack. After all, he is eating their proverbial lunches, both politically and personally. People (even in Texas) are tired of Bush and Company. Barack will bring much needed blood, policy and integrity to the White House. I haven't had this much fun since Ann Richards was elected governor of Texas!

Or the other Political Ticker : Obama plans trip to Europe and the Middle East

Pay attention McCain followers. Some of you guys are like lemmings… :(

And besides what Sen. McCain and the other silly rightys say to compare Sen. Obama to Pres. Carter, what do YOU know that could compare the two?

Using Wiki doesn't count…

Brenda   June 28th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

You know willy, it's comments like yours that make me wonder where your head is besides up your… No one has been able to change Iraq except for the worse. If we think that it is worth the lives of our young men and women then we should continue to expose them to the dangers that lurk in the Middle East. They have been fighting ages due to the bad blood between sibblings. We have sought to force our ways and our thinking down their throats. By your statement, which says nothing by the way, you appear to be for McCain and are making your comments in this arena for some sort of point. However, you know what they say about opinions. They are compared to something every one has. And yours stinks to high heaven.

Phil, FL   June 28th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Bush Jr. voted against helping Vets. What does a photo-op in Iraq do for the troops? (Oh, it diverts their attention )

READ SLOWLY. YOU JUST MIGHT GET IT.

AT LEAST JIMMY CARTER NEVER ROBED ANYONE.

CAN'T SAY THE SAME FOR MR. & MRS SLEAZO.

Dealt   June 28th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

Point 1 - Iraq is probably the place where more top-grade american personnel is posted. So he's not helping anyone (apart from his campaign) if he goes there and resources have to be diverted to guarantee his security, etc.). I presume he can get trustworthy information from plenty of people on-site. Why the rush??

Point 2 - Americans want to get out of Iraq and not to get a presidential candidate and a whole bunch of FBI agents in just to parade around. I'd suggest, if necessary, a quick in and out, unannouced in and out just to show the soldiers he cares (and he can best show he cares by bringing them home safe and guaranteeing them some compensation for services rendered).

Point 3 - Obama can best help by securing good relationships and a sane peace with the rest of the world and that he seems prepared to do.

William, from Cali!   June 28th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

It amazes me, why so many; are against the "War effort" in Iraq, now. Wars and rumors of war; have built the "character" of this Nation. Someone, must "fight and die, and be injured". in these Wars; that's what war is…………its not "a pretty picture, to see". Our "enemies" are hoping; that "we", haven't the "stomach" or "will" or "fortitude", to "stay the course", after them. You can deal, with "them" now; or you can deal with "them" later…….the choice is your's, alone. I hope, America makes; the "Right Choice!", always……………………God Bless America!

willy you idiot he has BEEN TO IRAQ!!!!

Farrell, Houston, Tx   June 28th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Obama sincerely cares about our veterans votes for bills to improve benefits for them. McCain has 30 plus years in the Senate to issure better benefits for veterans and still he does nothing. McCain wants Obama to visit Iraq to see the progress for his selfish political purposes but hasn't supported anything for the returning veterans.

David Peter   June 28th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Obama beat McBush to Walter Reed, just like in Iowa! Also, Barrack is more concerned about the American people than the Iraqis, unlike McBush the warpig.

MD in GA   June 28th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

I like that he chooses not to make everything a photo op. Somethings should be out of the camera's view and our vets deserve their privacy while trying to recover and heal. Besides these are the folks that have been closest to the fighting. The Senator should be listening to the opinions of the "Average Joe" as well as high ranking advisors.

LaShanda   June 28th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

I respect the fact that this was a visit that was NOT a photo op. He is determined to give our troops the care that they deserve. What is Bush doing about the homeless vets that served in his "war" based on lies? He invaded a country by creating false accusations. Our soldiers are KILLING themselves! McCain has not addressed these issues. Just because he is a vet does NOT entitle him to the presidency! He has failed to address the pressing issues that are affecting our veterans.

OBAMA 08

Monica for Obama in Indiana   June 28th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

A nightingale Sings in Berkley Square   June 28th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

So the guy who shunned the military is out on a photo op. Whoop di do. Some people will use other's backs to get somewhere.

The problem with those idiots at the McCain's event and others of the same ilk is that they never ask the question what would happen if we departed?

We need a public discussion on what may happen if we leave Iraq, covering all the advantages and disadvantages.

If we would have had this, maybe bush and the neo's wouldn't have invaded. But we are there and we need a national discourse of some of our bright people.

Colin Powell said it's like the guy in the china closet dropping a cup. If you break it, you buy it.

So let's get Powell, some others and Shinsecki and try to find an intelligent, honorable way out of this mess. I think McCain can do that and I don't think the empty suit can.

It's a welcome sign for presidential candidates to visit military hospitals. McCain, being a naval officer and POW, did not stay in Walter Reed, an Army hospital, but he must have stayed at Bethesda Naval Hospital after his return from Vietnam. In other words, he has seen it all.

Senator Obama needs to see the results of a president's decisions, especially when a candidate has never served in uniform. This is serious business. There are times he or she has to send men and women in harm's way in order to prevent more casualties later.

Politically Speaking   June 28th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

Exactly Obama. He showed true respect for our American heros and did not allow it to become a photo-op.

For a vote

All for a vote.

Obama has to keep his appearance up like he cares.

His wanting to push through the GI bill through shows he knows nothing and does not care about our military or the vets.

Our Military and out Vets deserve more than any of the social programs he wants and has pushed through.

Military and Vets should be top priority…………………………………..

Other wise draft all those who want the free ride and welfare bums into the military to serve for what they get.

Linda   June 28th, 2008 11:52 am ET

How many chance encounters with military men and women other than family do most of us have? It was a wonderful jesture on Senator Obama's part to recognize and remember these hero's who have defended this country to kept us safe. Thank you, Obama   June 28th, 2008 11:24 am ET

I am so proud to support Obama. My husband is an Iraq war vet and I am a caseworker in social services and we have been proud to donate what we can to this man. I have read both his books, been registering voters for him, and am excited to have someone who speaks from his heart as our president.

Thank you, Obama and Michelle. We love Michelle Obama!

"Barack Obama made a private, last-minute stop at Walter Reed Army Medical Center Saturday morning "

OK. It was private and last minute and at the same time his campaign announced his trip overseas. Sure that was not all planned out for the media.

Once a cheat, always a cheat   June 28th, 2008 11:20 am ET

Knowing how Obama backs us veterans and our benefits, his actions without all the pomp and fanfair doesn't surprise me in the least.

I have looked hard into Obama's past, much like I am looking now into McCains and at least, to me, McCain has some issues in his past which includes his "Songbird" status when he was a POW and his treatment of POW/MIA famillies when he got back.

I cannot support anyone who is a mirror of those in the current administration. The way those veterans from this war have been treated after coming home is a crime.

Just a few months left, I hope.

PUMA can do all they want but Obama will still prevail. I am surprised that most people think Obama was selected, how about his big big lead in delegates? how about his millions of supporters?

People need to grow up and realize that Obama is where he is because of his supporters and he will continue to do that as long as he gets their support. I personally believe that Obama will have enough support from republicans who will switch to support the first black president. For the PUMA people, what are you going to do when Obama wins in november? move out of the country?
