After having read all the comments on this article I am extremely disapponted. Only two or three comments are worth reading- the others I am surprised that CNN feels appropriate to share. All the name calling and discrimative comments would indicate that the majority of these voters are not selecting their candidate on the basis of their ability to lead and to effect the change we need in this country that we all love. I am an avid Democrat but do not like the comments and laughs about McCain's age. I can only imagine what hurt some of these comments are to the mature individuals in this country and also to those who have illness or body failures that require them to need depends, etc. Has nothing to do with McCain's ability to lead or his contributions to this country. As far as those that feel it appropriate to speak disgracefully about his military service they should have to serve and live as a POW - no matter what the conditions, it couldn't have been pleasant. I have to agree with one of the comments above that said Obama's following is mean spirited. Michelle Obama is right this is a mean country. Young people should think about their parents, grandparents and elders before throwing such blows-it doesn't speak well of their judgement to do otherwise. Let us knowledgably and intelligently discuss the issues and expect that the candidates do the same. I am a Hillary follower who has changed over to Obama's camp - after the above comments I may reconsider. Discrimation has changed from gender to age-this is sad.

I have equal respect for both candidates, but happen to agree with Obamas' opinions over McCain's. I think McCain does have an advantage in foreign policy, but for years what has that mentality done for our country? If you are fluent in world history you will find that violence only begets more violence and history repeats itself. I did notice someone mentioned "why vote for a politician whos going to raise taxes?", the answer is simple, it will generate more money to put into programs to build up the economy, the less tax the less money the gov't has to implement new ideas, i don't think it will cost each individual much of a difference out of their pocket, the brightside is together, with each person paying more, it will have a huge impact on the US ability to spend and improve conditions. Also, Obama has stated he is planning on raising taxes in the higher tax brackets, so people already suffering won't notice much difference.

Talk about an unfortunate statement! McCain implies that his word can be trusted by saying that Obama's cannot. This is rather terrifying given how McCain had to make deep promises to the far right in order to secure the Republican nomination. How can he now look moderates in the eye while saying, "I will represent you as President." ???

This lifelong Arizona Republican refuses to vote for Juan McSame, the pandering Depends clad friend of illegal alien employers. He fought hard for amnesty and lied to Republicans about how he was going to work on it. He pulled every trick in the book with Ted Kennedy to get it slammed through before the public would know about it.

However there are plenty of us that watch Juan's every move because we know that he cannot be trusted.
His $300Million "prize for a new battery for cars" is a perfect example of his pandering. Today the cost per mile for a plug in car is extremely low, and the first company that comes up with a new battery that takes mileage out far will become extremely rich in the "free market" that Juan McSame ignores.

Just a pandering old fool!

This seems like a risky strategy for McCain. Obama's change on campaign public financing came because Obama basically invented a new form of public financing with his small-donation-driven internet fund-raising machine. McCain's flip-flop on torture, and a host of other issues seem far more serious.

The other thing to bear in mind is that while we'd like our leaders to be right all the time, the next best trait is to recognize their mistakes and fix them. This is surely the most significant criticism of Bush is that he's never been willing to admit that Iraq was a mistake, and thus never been willing or able to make reasonable corrections. I think Obama wins this battle on flip-flopping and honesty. But else does McCain have?

All politicians are liars and are only in office to enrich themselves.....The people thought that the Republicans where the problem so they gave the Senate and the House to Democrats. What did we get: pork barrel spending over $600 million--$4.00 gasoline-and a house speaker that complained that her private jet was not suitable because it had to stop and be refueled. Obama says he is for change---lets tax the oil companies--did that in the 70's and we all waited in lines for gasoline-CEO's make to much money----hmm---I wish one of those high paid CEO's was running Social Security.......it would probably be solvent. When will the people learn--anytime government is involved things go to hell in a hand basket......Hey Dems you got your Congress---can't wait for $8.00 gas.

simple facts from recent BBC documentary ( Daylight Robbery) on american money in Iraq:
28 billion USD , thats public money is unaccounted for till now
un qualified and single contracts given to favourites( dick cheney etc) who made billions on cost plus contracts
qualified and big compnaies ( bechtel, parsons, haliburtons, KBR) make a nonsense of their reputation in earning good bucks in Iraq and claiming billions of dollars by doublijng their expenses shown , expenses added by sham companies in panama, luxomberg etc

Without Iraq govt approval hunt oil gets billion dollor contract with Kurd state in Iraq, Mr hunt was put in by Bush as a memeber of advisory committee which had special access on inside Iraq info.

The lady in pentagon who questioned the KBR deals was demoted and superceded

just see it and you will have an idea what has been going around for years...please be informed and choose what u want for your future

What a laugh. Mr. McCain has flip flopped on issue after issue. And he has the nerve to talk about trust and honest????? Either he has a short memory or he has alzheimers because he changes his views every day. And why won't he talk about solutions rather than about Obama? He has nothing new to offer.... he has no new ideas for America. All he has to offer is 4 more years of Bush ideas.

Dear John McCain,

Just do one honourable thing, vote for Barack Obama.
you will see that he is the only candidate that could be trusted because he will do whatever he says he would do.
Just cast your vote for him.

No more so than any of the other hundreds of captives who were each and every one tortured until they signed the documents put before them by the North Vietnamese.

The whole "John McCain betrayed his country in North Vietnam." campaign is the kind of low-grade, cheeseball tactic engaged in by political opponents who can't find anything legitimate with which to go at him head-on.

Voters with brains in their heads ignore smear campaigns like this one. Voters without brains in their heads get the government they deserve.

The day you get tortured for almost a decade and DON'T break is the day you can say John McCain betrayed the US in Vietnam.
Until you have been tortured as he was, you have no room to talk on what he did in Vietnam.

National Defense - who are you to tell me or any Democrat that we don't defend our Nation.

My father died for this country in Viet Nam, my brothers have served, my husband served during Desert Storm and MY OLDEST SON IS IN IRAQ NOW ANY MY YOUNGER ONE JUST ENLISTED!

I know the Republicans have painted a picture during Bushes regime that only Republicans are Christian and that only Republicans have the courage to serve in our armed forces.

You sir or madame are ignorant. The US Military is just as diverse as the US population.

I honor and respect and quite frankly expected each of my sons to serve when they came of age, and they are doing that. But don't you dare take away the honor and courage my sons and all the men of my family have showed with your IGNORANT PARTISAN CR*P!

This is rich, coming from a guy who has changed positions on all kinds of issues, most recently on offshore oil drilling. Frankly, I wish we could trust McCain's word on the issues. I trust Obama more because the campaign finance decision made a heck of a lot of sense, and was a good strategic decision.

I guess we are now at the point of the campaign when John McCain will say just about anything in order to gain political advantage.

It's fair for him to call attention to his opponent's changes of position -- but a potentially dangerous maneuver for McCain -- since the man has taken one seemingly principled stand after another only to vacate it when perceived political necessity seemed to demand it.

A politician hypocritical?

Tell me it ain't so.

At this point, it's become hard to believe I actually gave John McCain money in his 2000 primary run. He has REALLY been a disappointment over the last 8 years.

I have to laugh he says Obama is not getting public financing. His entire campaign is being paid for by people like me (the public) a small amount at a time while McSame is getting around the system and being bankrolled by Big Oil and Big Corporates. This man has gone from a respected Maverick to a foolish old sellout in about 2 years. Very sad.

Still waiting for my comment to appear. Will add another message now. McCain has a long way to go to catch up with Obamas flipflops.
If you want to go back to all years of McCains Senatorship to count his flips, then also give him credit for taking an unpopular but correct stand against the Bush policies and stop the misguided spin that he's another Bush! Who can ignore that being FLEXIBLE WHEN THE NEED ARRIVES is an important strength in a Leader?! McCain has the maturity and wisdom to know the difference. The whishy washy, Rookie Obama is the Strawman who takes a fickle stand and swings as is politically expedient and /or to enrich himself! He speaks with fork tongue! Disillusionist Democrat

SO McCain can't trust Obama's word?? Wasn't it McCain who opted for public financing during the primary, then ILLEGALLY used that money to secure a multi million dollar loan for his primary campaign? The committee could not get a forum to vote on the legality and whether McCain shoul face punitive action because there aren't enough committee members at this time. Guess who chairs the board to decide who can be committee members? McCain!!!

The democrats took over congress in 2006 with words of change and Pelosi and her group has done nothing in 2 years! Obama will be the same.

Thanks for this comment, it proves that the state of the country is a direct result of the Republicans without ONE veto for 6 YEARS of the Bush administration. Now, if we can get a Democrat president, things will get done in this country.

This coming for the biggest flip flopper ever. This man has gone against his own word on a consistent basis.

By the way McCain, how have you been paying for your campaign for the last three months? How have you paid for the new plane? Private funds, that's how. If you were truly interested in public financing, you would have pursued it consistently instead of flip flopping on the issue before deciding to go with it only AFTER Obama made his declaration.

I have to say that I don't mind a leader who can change with the needs as they present themself. I know that both parties like to send out the flip flop thing on each other, but I don't understand why. Times and needs of people change. As for Mc Cain saying Obama's word can not be trusted. I believe there are a few incidents where Mc Cain has been involved in some shady dealings. I'm sorry, maybe that is the "years of experience he is claiming".

Your comment is awaiting moderation.

You people who are judging McCain on the basis of his wavering political positions seem to be making a saint of Obama. You're in for a terrible disappointment if you think an electable politician will stay any direct course. They each generally move on a political course, and slightly alter that course in light of the polls. They have to be electable, and have an electable position before they can carry out a larger vision for the country. It's called politics. Don't imagine your hero Obama doesn't play this game masterfully. And his years as a politician aren't seasoned enough to be as scrutinized as McCain's. With McCain, we simply have a longer track record on which to judge him. Bottom line, they each have sufficient character and integrity to become president. Choose the direction you want for our country. Do you want a more conservative laissez-faire system of government (rely on the system more, less on the government) or do you want a more socialist one? Is a stable and free Iraq achievable and in our best interest as a nation or should we just get out? These and other major issues will decide the race, not flip flop count.

In making this statement, McCain also underlines his greatest weakness, his stubborness. Metaphor time: if you're on a train, planned to take a certain track, but it is currently blocked and there is another open track, do you switch? I fail to see how adapting to changing scenarios is a weakness. I know of another president that has paved the road to hell with stubborn, blind, good intentions.

This coming from a man who talked about protecting the environment in New Orleans only to vote AGAINST a bill helping the Everglades the very next day? This from the same man who years ago was against torture and now is for it? This from a man who had originally spoken against Falwell after 9-11 yet in recent years supported his statements?

No, Senator McCain, it is YOUR words that cannot be trusted. You have shown time and time again how you are willing to do and say anything if you think it will get you votes. You never cared about the environment until Obama started getting votes based on that. You never cared about the economy (and why should you with your 2nd wife's inheritance - the same woman you had an affair with while still married to your first wife who helped you through your time in Vietnam) until Obama started getting votes for it.

Obama has show he believes what he says and says what he believes straight through - far more than can be said about McCain.

I am a 45-year-old woman who has been reading some of the comments from Clinton supporters who will vote for McCain.

Well it was McCain's supporter who had a video on youtube that said "How do we beat the "bi_ ch"?

McCain's son is a member of a Country Club that bans women from a grill room.

During an interview with Las Vegas reporter asking why McCain did not ask Jim Gibbons to chair his Nevada Campaign.

Maybe it's the governor's approval rating and you are running from him like you are from the president?

McCain: (Chuckling) "And I stopped beating my wife just a couple of weeks ago"

Will likely change Supreme Court to the right to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Voted against equal pay for women.

According to Elizabeth Edwards, McCain's healthcare bill will discriminate against women. Edwards explains that health care insurers “‘rate-up’ my insurance bill for not only my status as a breast cancer patient, but also my gender,” noting that women are forced to pay more for health insurance

He voted against requiring health care plans to cover birth control (3/22/03).

He voted against comprehensive, medically accurate sex education (7/25/06).

He voted against international family planning funding (3/14/96).

He voted against funding to prevent teen and unintended pregnancies (3/17/05).

He voted against public education for emergency contraception (3/17/05).

And he voted against restoring Medicaid funding that could be used for family planning for low-income women (3/17/05).

A supporter of John McCain's Texan Clayton Williams once joked during his failed 1990 campaign for governor against Democrat Ann Richards. Williams compared rape to the weather, saying, "As long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it." He also compared Richards to the cattle on his ranch, saying he would "head her and hoof her and drag her through the dirt."
McCain ended up cancelling the fundraiser but kept the $300,000 Williams raised for him.

The list goes on and on, there is not enough room, judge for yourself. They are all from major networks reports.
