Sen. Barack Obama had to show his identification at the gym.
Sen. Barack Obama had to show his identification at the gym.

(CNN) - He may be running for the most powerful job in the world, but Sen. Barack Obama still has to flash his gym ID like the rest of us.

Wanting to get a quick treadmill session in before his first public event with Sen. Hillary Clinton Friday morning, the Illinois senator headed to the newly-opened Washington Sports Club in the Columbia Heights neighborhood.

But the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee did not get far when he and his entourage of Secret Service agents tried to walk past the front desk without stopping, according to the gym's general manager, Gonzalo Perez-Tamayo.

Perez-Tamayo told CNN the club trains its employees to adopt a strict policy of asking every member for his or her gym ID upon entry, even if they happen to be seeking the Oval Office.

The employee manning the front desk at the time, Takehia Wheeler, immediately stopped Obama as he was breezing past.

"It's always a rush in the morning, everyone's trying to come in quickly," Perez-Tamayo said. "She asked him for his last name and he said 'Obama,' then she asked him for his first name."

"It was very funny, she then realized who he was and said, 'Oh I am so sorry!" Perez-Tamayo added.

For the record, Obama is a member at the Washington Sports Club gym network.

The Illinois senator did not appear frustrated by the inconvenience, Perez-Tamayo also said, but he probably realized he needs to get a gym card if he wants to avoid the mix up in the future.

"If he doesn't want to get stopped he needs a card," Perez-Tamayo said. "It's the same for everybody."

obama probably just kept quiet and played all nice and then after he left the gym that day his crew from the magnolia projects in new orleans came in and everyone got dealt with

John Corboy   June 29th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Obama is not arrogant, he is a firm believer in the possbility of change for all people. Of course people are going to have argument to that, since change doesn't happen very often and most of us are afraid of it. The support of everybody working together towards important goals will influence change and it is possible. I notice so many postings on this website where people take this propanda they see on tv and let it morph their own beliefs, values and opinions. I am not going to let that happen to me, I really hope we elect a president who wants to try things differently, and who is open minded enough to take a peaceful approach with world issues over violence.

Linda iowa   June 29th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

Why the dissing on this employee just doing her job. Obama supporters should take a cue from him and stop being nasty. Racial profiling, Pleeeze!!!!!! Enough, I am so sick of everything that happens being racist, it is not.

mike obama   June 29th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

Does he list his full name in his ID or is he ashamed of his middle name. He admonished democrats not to take his middle name because he is ashamed of his muslim roots. He was also ashamed to have two muslim women wearing scarf on his dias for phor-op for he will be labelled a muslim. Are you ashamed of muslim community who gave you stong religious fundamental values when you were growing up with your ste-father in Indonesia. You also altered your bio-ad by telling that you were raised by your white grandparents in Kansas and forgot to mention your early childhood upbringing. You can fool the naive college kind and some gullible folks once not all the time.

It's ok. No need to dramatize and get into bitter words against Obama for nothing, The lady did her job; and I haven't read that Obama tried to push things badly. Humility is as a sign of maturity is in him. I'm sure that he dealt with this simply fine. It's ok.

Why was this ticker reopened? Cute story, but the ones that really foster discussion are always close after 80or so comments.

Shannon   June 29th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

he should wear his fake presidential seal on a lapel pin, maybe people would recognize him then. His arrogance knows no bounds, and his elitism shows in everything he does, no matter how hard he tries to hide it. He makes me so ashamed of my party, that I am no longer a Democrat. It's anyone but Obama for me, the only way he can win is to smear his opponent with the help of the press. He labeled a great woman a racist, and now is forcing her to help him win. She has no choice, they are already floating the story that if he loses it will be her fault. Fast Eddy is responsible for nothing!

Emma, San Jose, CA   June 29th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

Obama – Always a gentleman. Who else could be friendly toward the female opponent who slammed him at every turn. That is why she lost the nomination and he won.

That gym clerk probably thought they being robbed.

Peter E   June 29th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

I don't care what gym Obama belongs to. I don't care what he ate for breakfast. I don't care how much he spent on his suit. I don't care what he gave his wife for her birthday.
None of this stuff is relevant to him running for president.
What I care about is what his plans actually are to fix problems facing the country, and if he has a record in politics of carrying through such plans. That is all.

oldben   June 29th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

"Belle2 June 28th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Arrogance thy name is Obama!"

...that's what you took away from this? Have you ever actually been to a gym, Mrs Belle? It is a fairly common occurrence for people to walk in and out of a gym when they are in fact members =\. This gym has a slightly stricter policy apparently, and he had to 'flash his id.' how this is news is beyond me.

bigben1986   June 29th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

It's amazing how Belle2 is too cynical.. how can Barrack be arrogant?
If that was McCain or any other politician that girl will hear an earful.
Yesterday during the Q&A at the Latino conference. I watched at C-SPAN. McCain was telling the mayor of one of the counties in California that California was stealing water from Arizona and he wasn't kidding when he said it. What a jerk.

Peter E   June 29th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

And exactly how does this say anything about today's political issues and what the candidate's stance and record on them are?
And people complain how the public is zombified... THIS is why! Because the main stream media gives 95% of their attention to irrelevant events!

Vig   June 29th, 2008 1:11 pm ET

The media has stuffed so much Obama cotton candy down our throats, just the name Obama is starting to make our stomachs queasy. We have already had a belly full of Obama.

affirmative action   June 29th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

Obama's success as a candidate has nothing to do with putting to rest inequalities in the state of race and justice in America – it has more to do with how exceptional he as an individual within a politically active portion of America. There is pleanty of ugliness that prove that society has not yet matured enough to remove structural protections on equal rights.

Well, hardly newsworthy, but I guess it gets some blog attention. Just another day on the job for the gym. Doesn't prove anything except the worker was doing her job and Obama is a gracious person and understanding. At least Obama works out...McCain just sleeps on the weekends.

mitchell hussein martin   June 29th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

this country is turning into a police state.i am sure many other gyms would love to give obama a free membership, with no need for such a well known, american hero, to have an id.soon,he will have his own gym,and gop wont be allowed in ,and will all get fat.

Independent Voter   June 29th, 2008 12:45 pm ET

Grace and style? Please. Arrogantly walking past the person who checks id cards is hardly an example of grace and style. And we're all so relieved he didn't throw a hissy fit when his last name was not sufficient That makes him an adult, not a special person at all.

Why is this considered news by CNN?

Eric   June 28th, 2008 6:00 pm ET

Typical of politicians (both parties) and celebreties. "oh, they'll know me, and I can just walk right in". It's called arrogance people, and Obama has it just like every other senator (and rep).

If he is going to be a leader, he may want to lead by example.....

Byron Watson   June 28th, 2008 5:57 pm ET

This is a nice human interest story from cnn.com. Thanks.

I wonder if I am the only one to think, given W's low popularity rating and financial destruction to the country we are all experiencing right now in his disastraous term in office, that if W wobbled into that gym in the same predicament that the cute little gym attendant would send him back for his card and not practice the nice discretion she did for Obama!

Hanky   June 28th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

I have no problem with them asking for his ID. We are all equal citizens and although I am voting for Obama, he is not a king and should have been asked like anyone else.
"Have no Respect of Persons!"

Eileen Rizo-Patron   June 28th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

A candidate is still a citizen. I don't understand why this event is newsworthy. Not every gatekeeper at a gym is obligated to know a presidential candidate. Humility is a sign of maturity. I'm sure Obama dealt with this just fine.

Paulette, Cincinnati, Ohio   June 28th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

Who gives a S..... about Obama and what he does during the day or the night?????

Sam   June 28th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

No big deal. I'm more concerned about sensitive issues such as high gas and food prices, the mortgage meltdown and the high cost of school loans.
When those things seem to have been placed under control, then I can talk about less sensitive issues such as someone being stopped at the gym to produce his or her I.D.

Sam,

Brad   June 28th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

That's excellent, just shows that Obama is exactly like the rest of us. This is miles away from McCain who is so far removed from the American people that he is only vaguely aware of the internet and deems himself "computer illiterate." Remember when the world got pissed that George Bush Sr. didn't know how much a loaf of bread cost? That, my friends, is an elitist attitude that McCain shares. We need a president who is willing to at least make an effort to understand the lives of the people whom they vow to represent on the world map.

Obama thinks too highly of himself, or has a sense of entitlement, that he is different from others and will get a VIP treatment.

Why?

Peter Damoah_Afari   June 28th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

I was talking to my friend on phone today, and I got to know from him that millions of Americans are even not aware that there is going to be a general elections in the country. It shows the calibre and the sort of people living in such a country. No wonder the "gateman" in the GYM could not even identify Obama. .....Shame on him or her!!!

We can say that they were working strictly according to their rules, but this act is a silly one. People should not live in a country and pretend they do not know what is going on in there.

I will not attribute the action to insurbodination, but if it was then the manager of the GYM should know the ethics of his job and how to hundle special people.

Latina   June 28th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Del, you said that a bunch of "spics" are robbing a banck. The last time I open a History book, it was Caucasians robbing the wealth and land of those "spics" you call robbers. They are the indigeneous people of this land, and do not forget that Spanish was spoken before English in America. Who robbed Mexico of half of its territory just 150 years ago? They were armed illegals in Mexican territory. You are an ignorant racist. Do not forget, that your ancestors came in a boat, without visa from the people that owned these land.

Folks, it's called the Ticker for a reason – it is full of news items that aren't always worth putting on the first page of the website. Or even get a mention on the Politics page of the site. It's for everything, including silly, goofy things like this.

It was obvious that the woman at the front desk was so busy, all she saw were bodies heading into the gym and did her job. Just so happened that she did it when it was Obama. Cute story with a happy ending. I've heard of stories and seen in person incidents where the famous person not getting VIP treatment blew up at the help, so it's nice to see that Obama had the grace and patience to treat it like a gentleman.

Rich   June 28th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

How is going to the gym to work out elitist, Ula? I think lots of people go to a gym, even it if is the Y. So you are saying that the millions of people that go to a gym, including going to the Y are elitist?

I think you are very mistaken. Maybe instead of spewing repub catchphrases and hoping they stick, you get out in the world and maybe go to a gym and see who is there. In my gym every age, sex, color and nationality. Oh, but we were elitist.

I think it is funny and Obama handled it with ease. The clerk is only doing her job. The viewers that think she should lose her job for doing her job need to get a dose of reality. I'm sure that the Senator would be the first to step up and defend her. Come on people, get a life.

I am very proud of the employee for sticking to her guns and asking who he was he not the president yet he is just a person going for the job and he might not get it. I hope and pray that he doesn't get it because he scares me to death and that is a fact.

Sam   June 28th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

This is a guy who will surely rule the world. He knows what security means to Americans so there was no need for him to be worried. He will go through such events before he mounts the thrown. As for the poor guy, he was just doing his job and am glad Obama saw it that way.

Pennsylvania for Obama'08   June 28th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Obama is a gentleman and a scholar with an even temperment. Good for Perez too.

Tony   June 28th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

Obama has a way with people in any situation and I can think of some past and current presidents that would have handled that alot worse. Go OBAMA!!

Pennsylvania for Obama'08   June 28th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

...what a guy! No red carpet treatment, treated just like any other ordinary citizen and he didn't have any anger management issues. Awesome!

Apparently he doesn't feel that the world revolves around him. How cool is that!

dian   June 28th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

How could she not know who he was????

Mirta   June 28th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

No, he is just a person like everyone else. The fact that he didn't attempt to stop at the desk only shows me he level of arrogance. He acts like he is the President. He isn't and God I Pray he never will be! At this point he is just a junior Senator....

jery   June 28th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

all same brother, no bad feelings

Andrew Owens   June 28th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

I think everyone in this country has forgotten who politicians work for: Us. Does Obama's position make him any more special than you or I? No. Just remember something people, the government works for us, not the other way around. Obama's position in our government entitles him to one thing: to be at our disposal. After all, we are paying his salary. Don't be so naive as to think of him any more than the first among many public SERVANTS.

Brian from Iowa   June 28th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

I don't quite understand how this is news ...?

Sharon in Florida   June 28th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

That's funny... should make a commercial out of it. *chuckle* As for Obama and Clinton, the simple fact is that a truly unified political party doesn't need a unity rally. Flash a few more pictures around so people believe what they see in pictures instead of listening to common sense.

It's over   June 28th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

Obama '08

Justmyopinion2008   June 28th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

Some people tend to be over ambitious. I wonder how many Americans who have never seen the presidential candidates on the MSM or hur many ordinary coloured people in America who can afford to have secret service people with them when they are going to the gym? I was a similar type of treatment Oprah got in a shopping center in Paris. I also wonder how many people who will do that to Sen. McCain, Sen. Clinton or any other colleague of theirs.
I am glad that Sen. Obama handled it gracefully as usual giving the employee the benefit of doubt! If it were me, I am not sure I would. There is a thing call commonsense or basic intellegence, which helps you to see that a banana is ripe so you need not peel it to ensure that it is ripe!

It's a done deal   June 28th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

What gym does McCain go to?

pb   June 28th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

elitist

Cynthia   June 28th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Cute. Just goes to show you he's and everyday kinda of guy instead of an elitist that the Republicans and the PUMA's are trying to paint his as. By the way, the PUMAs need to get a life. Senator Obama won the Democratic nomination and Senator Clinton has moved on and his supporting him and so should they.

john ANI   June 28th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

Does anyone notice without H.R. Clinton, no one cares what happends to either of these candidates and the number of responses on blogs without her name is pratcially nil .

Come and visit and join PUMA PAC

Obama In the House   June 28th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

... but this isn't news.

NORA, FLORIDA   June 28th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Sure it is the same for everybody. I'm sure that it is. ***rolling eyes*** In the next few weeks, you will see the media with his I.D. plastered over websites. Hidden cameras anyone. Do you know how much money people would pay just to see his real I.D., Driver's License, or Birth Certificate.

This is just the reason why our country is in the shape that it is in now because Americans are so noisey and are worrying about the wrong thing. We should be questioning and looking at Obama's policies and intents. I don't care about his I.D

Jeanine G   June 28th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Enough already!!!

Drew   June 28th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

@Peter E:

my friend, in any case he won't be raising taxes as much as they probably ought to be raised. Voodoo economics have ruled Washington for nearly 30 years, and will continue to do so no matter who's elected.

Regarding this story – it's kind of surprising that not everyone in the country can recognize Obama by now. I guess there are still people who need to get to know him over the next four months. But if they miss their chance now, they'll have plenty of time over the next 8 years!

NObama   June 28th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

John, you obviously don't know anything about the DC area. Columbia Hgts is not exactly a high crime area.

But, nice try!

Kudos to Obama for supporting another worker for doing their job correctly!

Obama things he's special   June 28th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Obama isn't raising MY taxes or anyone of the 98% of Americans who will save on average over $1000 under his plan. If you are the 2% making over $250,000 then you will have higher taxes yes.

McCain's plan will, based on a study give the most benefit to people making over $2.5 Million and almost nothing to people making under $100 thousand.

McCain = Tax cuts for people who don't need it and the shaft to the people who do.

Obama 2008

"If he doesn't want to get stopped he needs a card," Perez-Tamayo said. "It's the same for everybody."

How about Perez-Tamayo and his employees pay more attention. I would think a presidential nominee is memorable enough to not need a card. He is brining them free publicity.

Obama the Messiah   June 28th, 2008 3:44 pm ET

Well, I guess the country really is just STARTING to get to know him, but how can the clerk miss those ears? Definetly Barrack Obama

Capt. R.A.Shoemaker   June 28th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

He should have had the courtesy and the understanding that the person at that front desk had a job to do and that NO ONE is above the LAWS set down by all the different establishments. Just because he happens to be running for president and takes for granted that he can go ANYWHERE, DO ANYTHING, etc... at ANY TIME he wants and thinking that ALL people SHOULD KNOW who he is and what he is all about and ALLOW HIM SPECIAL PRIVELIDGES is WRONG!

For example- let's say he was driving a car and speeding ( say through a school zone during the school posted times 15 miles over the limit ! ) should the officer that stopped him let him go just because of WHO he just happens to be? It's actually WORSE that he did speed as HE is supposed to set the example!

And this very thing happened to me- I was a cop shooting radar at a school zone during the hours the kids are getting out of school- when along came ANOTHER COP ( in uniform & late for work at the airport but speeding 20 OVER the limit! ) and I wrote him up! He was astonished as cops don't usually give other cops tickets- usually! All I said was ' How would you have felt if you had HIT one of those kids and it just happened to be YOURS as well??? End of argument !!!!

So I say NO- he SHOULD have stopped at that front desk, signed in or whatever he had to do – thus SHOWING RESPECT for that ladies position who was manning the desk at that particular time just like the everyday 'man in the street' would have had to have done!

Park More, New Orleans   June 28th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

I am glad that Senator Obama had a good disposition in this situation. It shows that he understand that EVERYONE has a job to do. I guess this incident debunks the elitist label. However, I am scared to say if it was Dick Chaney, he would have demanded that Ms.Wheeler is fire or forced to go duck hunting.

Bryan Stewart   June 28th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

Why is this news? This article is an insult to my intelligence. What criteria deems an article to be appropriate for the politics section? Anything in the world that involves a politician? What's next? "Obama makes boom boom in Capitol Hill restroom"?!

why is it a news story to start with?
Obama is still a human being, a citizen, a family father, a customer and a taxpayer.

Ellie in Aurora, CO   June 28th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

Oh, for heaven's sake – how silly! Plus it's bad customer service. When you recognize a client (particularly one that might be your next president), you shouldn't make them go through hoops (no pun intended!). Also, not sure this qualifies as "news" for the ticker. A slow day, CNN???

Conie   June 28th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Good for you tamayo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What's good for the goose,is good for the gander!!!!!!!!!!!!

Morshed, Houston, TX   June 28th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

I think Perez-Tamayo and his staffs did this intentionally because they wants to be famous by doing this. Barack Obama is such a high profile person and typically no needs to verify his identity. Because he is filtered and very very well known person. Rules should apply equally to everybody but may not be apply all the time. Then world leaders needs to show their ID on every steps wherever they goes and they gonna ruin their valuable time by showing ID. Shame on Perez-Tamayo!

Ula Nejad- Sacramento Ca   June 28th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

He is an "elitist" for pete's sake. I hope that sends a message home...lol. What an egocentric fool.

Amy King   June 28th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

Ouch. That's pretty bad that she couldn't recognize the man.

Mark, B'ham., Al.   June 28th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

He should have to show his ID just like everyone else unless he is an elitest like Congresswoman McKinny. I have to show my ID even though I have gone to the same gym and talk to the desk staff regularly for the last 4 years. He has only been in DC 1 1/2 years!

Mary   June 28th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

It is good that the rules of the gym applies to Barack Obama. It is a shame that the rules of the DNC did not. He was selected dispite the rules.

He didn't get mad or frustrated because he's one of us and doesn't hold an air of superiority or outrage that someone like Naomi Campbell would have displayed. I can see her now, "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM!!??" *slap*..

Morshed, Houston, TX   June 28th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

I think Perez-Tamayo and his staffs did this intentionally because they wants to be famous by doing this. Barack Obama is such a high profile person and typically no need to verify his identity. Because he is filtered and very very well known person. Rules should apply equally to everybody but may not be apply all the time. Then world leaders needs to show their ID on every steps wherever they goes and they gonna ruin their valuable time by showing ID. Shame on Amigo Perez-Tamayo!!

Smith   June 28th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Mr Obama, we know you are a brother but Columbia heights is not the safest place for you to be exercising. Last time i parked @ that neighborhood, my car radio vanished in thin air!

HEIDI   June 28th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

I DON'T THINK HE WOULD HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT. HE IS STILL A MAN.

Can we unite please!   June 28th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Make sure you get a gym card Pres. Obama.

Membership has its priveleges – or NOT! I guess this proves that Obama is still not a Washington insider!

That is why I am voting for him!

Sebastian   June 28th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

Senator Obama ....

I think I can take you to the hoop ... one on one ... me and you.

John   June 28th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

Columbia what? Is this not the part of DC where you get shot while getting shot! What if he got involved in the cross fire of one of those Spanish gangs up there?

Pat Va   June 28th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Boy...I can just imagine the little hissy fit that would have been thrown had this been any other of the Washington elite who had been stopped by one of the "little people" just performing her job. Senator Obama...such a gent.

Bubba   June 28th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

He needs a gym ID card, like everyone else...priceless ! ! !

Del   June 28th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

Mr Perez-Tamayo you should know that in every organization, there is something call a VIP list meaning VERY IMPORTANT PERSONALITY! Senator Obama is not only running for presidency but is a junior senator of the united states. These are people that the nation relies on to make decisions that affect each and everyone one of us including you. So the reason why they get the whole entourage of secret service and body guards is because of the importance of their safety and their value in society. Yes he is just an ordinary human like everyone else but he has been voted into power to command and make critical decisions which makes him a target. That is why he moves around with an entourage of secret service. He should be able to get in to the gym without flashing an ID because of the risk involve in stopping to provide an ID. I also think Mr Obama picked a very unsafe location to go for exercise. Columbia heights does not have the best security of the Washingtonian neighborhoods. He should rather go somewhere safe where if he is to stop to provide an ID, he should not worry about sniper fire or a bunch of "spics" robbing the bank across the street.

Desmond   June 28th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

I am sure some humourless individual is going to say some thing nasty about OBAMA's "presumptiousness", even though the attendant took it with a sense of humour.

It is very good that everybody is treated equal, including the future President of the USA

Peter of Oregon   June 28th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

I really don't know how the news media industry works I'll admit. But... if you don't have a real news-worthy national story on a given day, why not discuss current events in local or state politics? Sometimes CNN feels like a tabloid media agency instead of a reporter of the news.

Ian M   June 28th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

I'm an Obama supporter, but come on, this isn't news.

MD   June 28th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

You gotta love the "equality" in America.

Natalie Ward   June 28th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Good for him! He didn't get all bent out of shape by having to follow the same rules as everyone else. Quite a change from the group we currently have in the White House.

Ernie   June 28th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Thank you Mr. Perez-Tamayo for enforcing your policy. You should have been the judge for Paris Hilton and others who think they are so special.

Bibek   June 28th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

That's funny.

It is very good to know, and I am sure OBAMA will agree, that everybody is treated the same, including the next President of the USA.

Abdul   June 28th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

That seems to be the case with Obama in general. He does not appear frustrated even the face of a barrage of nuisances. I think it shows a great deal of maturity.

Jesse Abrams   June 28th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

I'm surprised that Obama didn't accuse the person of being RACIST.

Houstonian   June 28th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

Ha! I'm amazed at anyone who woulgn't recognize Obama at this point. It shows that more people need to plug in to the sign of the yimes.

Colorado Democrat   June 28th, 2008 2:22 pm ET

One time in LasVegas when they were on alert for bogus $100 bills, a woman tried to intimidate a little change lady into giving her change even tho her bill did not clear the hand-held bill checker instrument she was holding. I stepped in and told the change lady, "Always follow the rules and you will never be sorry." The woman was then referred to Cashier for change. It is great that this person at the health club followed the rules. We all have to follow the rules. It was handled well by all parties. What a neat story.

The Change Express   June 28th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

Peter E   June 28th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

Yes. And they require everyone, including senior citizens to flash their ID to get a beer at Chicago's O'Hare airport... And yet CNN doesn't talk about that. You know why? Because NOBODY CARES!
Now the article about the details of how Obama is going to raise taxes THAT's a political issue. THAT's what people should be talking about.

Moon over San Diego   June 28th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

What's wrong with us? These government "officials" WORK FOR US.
Obama is our employee..nothing more, nothing less.
Government officials are paid with our tax dollars, their insurance coverage is better than ours and yet it is paid for with tax dollars, they live in better houses than most of us..AND YET, we treat them like they are "special"
THEY ARE OUR EMPLOYEES !!!!!

A Democrat No More, California   June 28th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Gee, the rock star style politician with an out of control ego and the wannabe president had to identify himself at an elite gym.......very newsworthy!

Farrell, Houston, Tx   June 28th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Obama is Americas chance to improve our economy, end the war and improve our image around the world. Why, we have no bargaining power. We borrow money from China and India and then we turn around and put sanctions on other countries. That worked when we had a strong economy. GWB put us in worst harms way than we will ever realize and McCain is not the solution to continue on the same path. PEOPLE WAKE UP OUT THERE.

Obama donated $4600 to Hillary's campaign. Hillary turned back around and gave Obama his $4600 back as a donation, which equals huh 0.

Politics at it's finest.

Jazzy   June 28th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

That's OK for now. He is used to it since, after all, he is a black man. If he becomes president, he will probably have to do the same thing. Even when all is said and done, why should he be exempt from showing his ID if the rules require it. Find something more interesting to write about. Take for instance: Is John McCane a POW or a Criminal of War. I want to know the story.

Jackie Brown   June 28th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

It just shows that Obama is an elitist by going to the gym! He is going to try to push his healthy ways on all of us. No thank you – I am going to stick with my beer, potato chips, and all american hot dogs and hamburgers! I REFUSE to exercise and be an elitist like him. Just put me in front of a TV and I'm happy!

You say he will never beat McCain – I say again let´s just wait and see !!

I think this article further illustrates that Obama is much closer to a regular person than Mccain is. Yes he is rich, but he knows what it is like to be a real person and have real struggles. Mccain on the other hand is this stiff old guy who keeps calling everyone his "friends" and hasn't opened a door for himself in months. The closest Mccain comes to being an everyday person is when he breathes the same air as the rest of us.

NORA, FLORIDA   June 28th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

Sure it is the same for everybody. I'm sure that it is. ***rolling eyes*** In the next few weeks, you will see the media with his I.D. plastered over websites. Hidden cameras anyone. Do you know how much money people would pay just to see his real I.D., Driver's License, or Birth Certificate.

This is just the reason why our country is in the shape that it is in now because Americans are so noisey and are worrying about the wrong thing. We should be questioning and looking at Obama's policies and intents. I don't care about his I.D.

fred   June 28th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

Barack Obama right now seems to think he's the most powerful person in the world. I remember quite the opposite happened with McCain when he was in Arkansas campaigning with Mike Huckabee. The restaurant owner was going to give them free food, but instead they said that they would rather pay for it just like any other person would have to.

And all you liberals think Obama is "one of us hardworking Americans?" You guys are wrong. He's got one of the worst pride problems in Washington. I mean someone has to think they're a king to just walk into a gym without stopping at the front desk. Wake up people. If you think having a president who thinks he's the king of the world is the "change we need" then Obama's your man.

Obama-Man   June 28th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Did she ask his Secret Service Agents too?

NoMccain   June 28th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Why is this news?
This is precisley why our political system needs to be overhauled. Voter's decision making is actually persuaded by these sorts of things [i.e. what the Media purports], making me very skeptical of our past and current political system. Some people are going to read into this as Obama being a elite... when this is not an accurate portrayal of his demeanor. I trust he handled it very well, but none of us were there to say.

Karl Clark   June 28th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Good for her. i would have him flash his ID as well.

The problem with those idiots at McCain's event today and others of the same ilk, is that they never ask the question what would happen if we departed?

We need a public discussion on what may happen, if we leave Iraq, covering all the advantages and disadvantages.

If we would have had this, maybe bush and the neo's wouldn't have invaded. But we are there and we need a national discourse with some of our bright people.

Colin Powell said it's like the guy in the china closet dropping a cup. If you break it, you buy it.

So let's get Powell, some others and Shinsecki and try to find an intelligent, honorable way out of this mess. I think McCain can do that and I don't think the empty suit can.

Cue the all caps comments about how this makes McCain better in some way.

Just another sign that Obama thinks he is better than those that have to show their membership card.

I am just another disabled veteran that has no job, and I am tired of seeing people that think they are better than others. My GOD made us ALL EQUAL!

Obama, Next time follow the rules and show your membership card!

To cute, is all I got to say. I do have to ask myself though where is she at when she is not working. Seems like a pretty detached young lady.

@wolfblitzercnn: Redskins-Giants always exciting. Both teams have a lot to prove. And Giants can still salvage playoffs. Skins just need a win.
