Quite a few people have said that they don't know who Seymour Hersh is…why not look him up on the web instead of telling us about the holes that exist in their knowledge bases.

Zelda of Pittsburgh   June 30th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

Maybe Bush just needs to prove his manhood by going to war? He's clearly not really thinking of our country. He's a danger to himself and others, especially others. He needs to leave before he starts another world war.

jack   June 30th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Is Karl (the idiot) Rove sending planning e-mails to Dick and George again?

Only Republican desperation could dream up war with Iran as a way to secure the White House for thier party.

Hersh, who gave you all the Top Secret - For Eyes Only
information about the Iraq war planning?

Sammy   June 30th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

Its always difficult to distinguish between facts and conclusions. His articles tend to mesh one with the other. Context is also another problem in reporting if none is available for the information gathered. So while his articles are very informative we must try to separate the two. It is also interesting that info is said to come from current and former officials in the sense that it insulates those currently on the job from whatever kind of penalty. Who knows from which a particular piece of information came from?

Go Obama   June 30th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

Shock and Awe has become lie and decete. Liberman once a Dem V.P candidate is bucking for the same job on the other side of the isle. GW should have his 'declare a phony and tragic war card' taken away from him his last 7 months, 20 days, 23 hrs and 52 minutes (PDT) but who's counting, right.

Isn't there anything, anyone can do, who cares in Washington D.C. to stop this madness before more sons, daughters, fathers and mothers are killed for no other reason than to try and force others to live how we live?

Democracy is all about the freedoms granted under the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights.

If we need to be covert about preventing attacks then so be it, but Mr. Liberman, please stop scaring this country…we're too beat up, losing our homes because of predatory lending from the Bear Sterns type invested in companies that the government rescues, can't afford a gallon of gas because of greed.

At least before GW we only couldn't afford to educate our children but could afford to eat, keep our homes and didn't have to go thru the 'body count days' of Vietnam. Oh, how good we had it and how our morals have been reduced to SCARE and AWE

These power hungry idiots are not going to be happy till we have a war on every piece of soil in the world and it would end winner take all if ant thing is left. I read a report today that Halliburton is already slipping around Iran and has been for a long time. If this is true our war monger leaders are going to get this planet blown out of existence.
Been wondering for yrs is how Chaney got so much power and made Bush his puppet.

Should one American Soldier become wounded or killed as a result of duty performed in Iran, wouldn't Seymour Kersh become a traitor (if not already) and be tried as such? He, and the News Media (TV) that carry his story and tell it to the world all should be tried as traitors .

At some time someone is going to become braver than those we now have in government and these pot shot reporters are going to pay the price, and well it should be.

Jerrold E. Fink   June 30th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

Why has there been no discussion, during the debate concerning intercepts/telecom immunity and security , about the low number of translators competent in Farsi, Arabic, Urdu, etc. who would be able to provide meaningful, real time translations of the millions of intercepts.

All the intercepts in the world will not provide security if:

1. We are unable to translate them in real time;
2. We cannot separate the meaningful/real information from the intentionally false disinformation;
3. We cannot prepare intelligent strategies/effective responses to the real threats; and
4. We cannot execute those strategies/responses.

But, this Administration and its supporters ignore these issues and do not fund translators or "in field" interpreters, even 7 years after 9/11 and the Administration's commencement of an ill-defined, vague and poorly executed "War on Terror". It's simply "feel good" legislation giving a false sense of security, based on the belief that the "enemy" is stupid and will communicate its nefarious plans in English and without disinformation which an all to willing Administration will jump to in response, thereby wasting even more resources.

Donna   June 30th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

You know it's election time when the FEAR MONGERING begins in earnest..it's bad enough that we had to deal with a horrible domestic economy, poor educational system, destroyed environment, etc..now we have to worry about COWBOYS in office declaring war on ANOTHER COUNTRY that hasn't directly attacked us…it's not Bush's job to say what Iran can and can't have..until they do something to us DIRECTLY, we should leave them alone…I guess one UNJUSTIFIED war isn't enough….

Hersh is an idiot!

He gets a tidbit of information and then does not do all of the homework to find out if it is even remotely true.

Those tabloids are always the same, and they kind of sound like the main stream media these days.

After all only about 5% of reporters are doing their jobs correctly these days!!

Phil in KC   June 30th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

After the fabrication this administration concocted to get us into Iraq is there really any doubt as to the validity of Mr. Hersh's accusations? I suspect he is spot-on.
Alas, I won't be submitting a question for Mr. Hersh, though. I must be terribly old-fashioned. I don't have a movie camera. I don't have a camera or microphone on my computer. To the best of my knowledge, my cell phone does not have that capability. And, really, I don't have a burning desire to see a grainy video clip of myself shown on national TV. I would be more than satisfied to let Wolf read any question I might have.

Walt, Belton,TX   June 30th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

Who is Seymour Hersh? Never heard of him…………..

Jason Carter   June 30th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

I'd like to know what his sources are. What are his reasons for coming to this conclusion? Conspiracy theories and rumor mills have been active for the last 4 years about Bush starting a new war with Iran, but most have lacked credibility. Why is this one different?

jeff   June 30th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Why do you think that our covert operations are required to be public information, do you realize that people outside the United States follow our news (including Iran) and how does it feel to compromise our security?

Neal   June 30th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

The nut jobs are trying to start a war with Iran, never mind that it would be a losing fight unless we instituted the draft. It will ensure their guy gets elected.

ron   June 30th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

why is it important that Hersh and CNN alert Iran to the fact that this administration is concerned that the country that support the people that gaves us 9/11 have nuclear power and we need to know to what capacity.he is telling them that we are sending covert operations against them. is this not a way to fuel and accelerate a war against Iran justifying their position instead of ours. what country is this Hersh from anyway. is there no more patriotism in this country if a chance for a story is involved. sick sick sick

So? Hersh does not know what he is talking about. In his comments he says "I think. . .". So why is this news at all? Why does CNN give such credence to newsmen who support Liberal viewpoints but nothing to the conservative side?

Ellie in Aurora, CO   June 30th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

Jimmy Velman - you belong to this administration. Your last comment says it all: "we worry about our enemies capabilities to reduce OUR resources…" Since when did all the oil in the Middle Eat become OURS?? What a backward, arrogant thing to say! We use 25% of current world resources today. That needs to stop. Oil is NOT a good reason to go to war - again!

OK REPUBLICAN FEAR MONGERS–ENOUGH ALREADY.
IF INFO IS TRUE, IT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN LEAKED TO THE SO CALLED "LIBERAL MEDIA", OBVIOUSLY ,BY A REPUBLICAN FEAR MONGERER.
THREAT OF ANOTHER UNNECESSARY WAR WILL NOT MAKE ME VOTE FOR McCAIN—–QUITE THE OPPOSITE WOULD BE TRUE FOR A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF AMERICANS WHO HAVE BEEN BUSH-WHACKED ENOUGH.
WHY ARE DEMOCRATS AFRAID TO IMPEACH??
ANYONE?, ANYONE?—PELOSI? WHAT SAY YOU.

Brian, NJ   June 30th, 2008 1:37 pm ET

@Bob Stephens: probably because Hersh has been saying this stuff for more than 3 years (by my count; maybe longer?), each time indicating the attack is "imminent", and it keeps not happening. I'm not saying he's wrong — it's certainly plausible — but at some point you just stop paying attention to Chicken Little.

Independent-woman-4-Obama   June 30th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

No, I don't have a question. However, I want to convey to Mr. Hersh that we appreciate his reporting on the TRUTH!

When I heard in the news last week that Israel wants help from the U.S., in bombing Iran's nuclear facilities I knew we were in trouble! Do we really want World War III?

Our national debt is $10 TRILLION AND THE WAR WITH IRAQ HAS COST, $650 BILLION TO DATE!

PLEASE PEOPLE WAKE UP! We can't continue killing and bombing! Our nation is in danger of bankruptcy.

THE REPUBLICANS ONLY KNOW HOW TO PLAY THE FEAR CARD, JUST LIKE THE PLAYED THE COMMUNIST-WILL-GET-US CARD DURING THE COLD WAR!

WAKE UP AMERICAN DON'T FALL PREY TO LIES AND MISINFORMATION!

Ron   June 30th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

We need to say out of Iran's affairs and pursue a more open dialog with them. Iran is a nation that does not respond well to threats. Too often, America preaches freedom and democracy at the end of a gun barrel. Perhaps we need to practice what we preach at home before going out into the world and continue losing respect. At first approach, an olive branch does more good and an gun.

When America decided to enter into Somilia (sp) at the end of the Bush administration, he coordinated these efforts through the Clinton team as he knew such actions would carry over to the next administration; wise move of the elder statesman. Before the next Bush makes another fatal mistake perhaps he should involve the two candidates as another "mission accomplished" might takes years, if ever to complete.

Sure hope we are wrong again about those WMDs.

Kelby from Houston, TX   June 30th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

The fact that the Bush adminstation is trying to keep the war machine going is nothing new. That is why it is not getting alot of attention now.
People who connect the dots already know about the intentions of this administration know that they are going to attack IRAN before time runs out

DJ, LA, CA   June 30th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

Sources? Is Mr. Hersh ready to back-up these comments with legitimate sources?

Yes many people have been speculating about another "October Surprise" for some time. Obviously it would create a panic and boost McCain's chances if Iran was attacked. Many people have been claiming that Bush/Cheney wanted to invade Iraq to have a chace to also get access to Iran.

Jim   June 30th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Wow looks like they're really trying to put us in a panic…man if the republicans get away with this fear mongering again I'm saving for Canada.

We do not need to hear speeches on Patriotism.
Americans are patriotic to a fault. we have always pulled together
in times of war.

PaulC   June 30th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

There is no question that the Bush Administration is conducting a very effective campaign to garner support for an attack on Iran before he leaves office. The fact that they can do this after the fiasco of Iraq is nothing short of amazing. This is only possible with the support of the voters preoccupied with the failing economy and the roll-over Congress.

Our government is spending more on defense than was spent at the height of Vietnam with uncounted billions going to cronies of the Administration for overpriced weapon systems. In case we have a short memory this is what brought down the Soviet Union.
If the public doesn't wake up and demand controls we are facing a very sharp decline and bankruptcy.

Brian, Pittsburgh   June 30th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Everything about this buildup looks just like the buildup before the Iraq War. Is this completely politically motivated (to start a war before the election), or is there any other legitimate reasons for the push?

citizen   June 30th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Why go into another mistake like Iraq…thousands killed our own, plus innocent Iraquis, billions spent and counting? This thought is ludicrous, etc…

Your Comments, please Mr Seymour Hersh.

ProundToBeDemocrat   June 30th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

Bush will try to go to war with Iran and Mccain is in support of that , that is why people like Lierburman spreading rumors of terror. Wacht out people the Repulicans are out there to destroy us all. Say no to War diplomancy is the way to go.

D.Johnson   June 30th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

I believe that any war with Iran at this time would be very counterproductive and serve as the beginning and the end of the western occupation of the Middle East. Apart from oil price going up to $ 300 a barrel and $15 dollar for a gas, the world economics would collapse. The United States is already engage in two wars right now in the Middle East and East Asia, and if the Bush administration starts another war, it would most certainly destroy our prestige and ruin any chance of relative peace in that part of the war. For a matter of fact, how are going to pay for a war with Iran and who are we going to send there? I hope NYT and other media outlets seriously question this administration before it leads the U.S on a path of a disaster war. This is troubling, do you think so?

jimmy velman   June 30th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

War is inevitable with Iran given its refusal to halt its Nuclear Weapons program. It threatens to inflict severe damage/retaliation
to any who would attack their country. It is obvious , they would try to block the flow of oil thru the Strait of Hormuz as a first strep….planting
thousands of mines and sinking large ships, even tankers to block shipping thru that strategis water way. The immediate effect of such actions are obvious.. it will throw the global economies into an
unprecendented turmoil. What then is the best solution to Iran's intransigence? Iran has huge conventional ordnance with missiles
to deliver it. Israel and the U.S. have overwhelming forces to deal with Iran, but will it be decisive in a very short and timely manner to prevent global economic chaos if Iran somehow manages to block
the Straits of Hormuz and the flow of oil? we do not worry about our preparedness to deal with any war. we worry about our enemies capabilities to reduce our resources and the economic consequences of retaliations.

katiec   June 30th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

I read an article this weekend about Israel planning to attack
Iran, U.S. backing Israel and Russia backing Iran.
World War III!'
How scary. Can we do anything to stop Bush from making
any critical decisions the rest of his term? Cannot believe
that Congress would back anything that would get us deeper
into war. With what resources? We are broke and have no
additional man power.
Heaven help us.

alone in VT   June 30th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

if the war with iran thing is true, then the media should be held accountable for putting our troops (special operations) in danger. It would be no different than giving out the identity of a CIA agent, and remember that the media had a wonderful day lashing out at Bush for that because of their bias. This is Bush last term, why dont people see that?
