(CNN) - One of the members of John McCain’s new Truth Squad - which his campaign says was launched to respond to unfair attacks on his record of military service –- was a member of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, and appeared in an attack ad for the group in 2004.

The group was created to attack 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry’s military service record.

"How can you expect our sons and daughters to follow you when you condemned their fathers and grandfathers?" asked former Air Force Col. Bud Day, who was a prisoner of war with McCain in Vietnam, in a 2004 Swift Boat Vets spot.

McCain has said that he opposed the group’s efforts.

On a campaign conference call Monday, a Politico reporter asked Day if there was any similarity between former Gen. Wesley Clark’s controversial Sunday comments about McCain’s military service and his own remarks about John Kerry during the last presidential campaign.

Day dismissed any equivalence. "The Swift Boat 'attacks' were simply revelation of the truth. The similarity does not exist here," he said. "…One was about laying out the truth. This one is about attempting to cast a new shadow on John McCain."

Haha! That is pretty funny. McCain just got knocked off his high horse about was Wes Clark said, which really wasn't an attack, it was just saying that being a POW doesn't mean you have executive experience. Anyone who knows what "executive" means understands that to be true.

You all can just leave Bud Day alone. He is a renowned hero not only in the military service of his country but also in civic responsibilities in NW Florida. Anyone who opposes Bud Day is lacking in civil and national patriotism.

Seems like his tactics and views are 100 percent the same as George W. Bush..... and look what THAT brought us!

not this time....not this year....someone needs to call up McBush and make him aware that he is running in 2008 and not 2004

    HYPOCRITE.

Actually I shouldn't be so hard on McBush. He probably can't remember that far back in time, without Joe Lieberman or a teleprompter feeding him his lines. He so reminds me of my crazy old grandpa in his nursing home, only let loose on the public.

Well, I'm not suprised. Looks like John Mccain has jumped on the Karl Rove, lie-and-do-anything-you-have-to, bandwagon.

    Shame on you John Mccain.

Greg from NY: Ironic? Not even. Pretty much expected at this point. :-P

Frankly, the GOP's desperation is showing, and they're going to pull out every dirty trick, slander and slur they can think of to try to tarnish Obama's image. Will they do irreparable damage to their own party in the process? Likely.

The 2004 Swiftboat debacle was just proof positive that even a lie, a blatant, disgusting, baldfaced lie, even when it is dragged into the light of day and exposed as a lie for all the world to see, can still do damage to a candidate. I hope that the American people have matured to the point that they will see past this nonsense and do the right thing.

I've never been a supporter of John McCain, but his putting this guy on his campaign is revolting.

So much for "truth" and taking the high road on the campaign.

Being in the military does not make you "better" than anybody. You can't compare a person that goes to war as a career and someone that feeds the homeless as a career. They both have purpose.

FORMER PRES. JIMMY CARTER DESERVES AN APOLOGY FROM JOHN MCCAIN BEFORE HE STARTS CRYING ABOUT WHAT SOMEONE SAYS ABOUT HIM. PEOPLE 45 YEARS OLD AND YOUNGER DON'T KNOW NOTHING ABOUT VIETNAM AND DON'T CARE TO KNOW ANYTHING. WHEN IS MCCAIN GOING TO GET THAT THROUGH HIS THICK SKULL. STOP THE IRAQ WAR, THAT'S WHAT THEY CARE ABOUT.

If this is what straight talk truly means, count me out for good. The Swift Boat attacks were orders of magnitude more disgusting than what Clark said. They ripped apart a vet for nothing more than political gains for Bush. Wow, isn't that what McCain is trying to fight against? I guess Bud Day is a flip-flopper too...

  25. It's a done deal

Nice guy. If he likes the presidential candidate he bolsters the perception that they are a patriot, if he doesn't he makes them look unpatriotic. McCain needs to denounce this guy at once, before he loses the handful of people who think they will vote for him.
