McCain ads appeared on several Web sites run by Hillary Clinton supporters.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – John McCain's campaign will stop advertising on several pro-Hillary Clinton Web sites that have attacked Barack Obama for being unpatriotic and, in one case, compared the Democratic nominee-in-waiting to Adolf Hitler.

A spokesman for McCain said Monday the campaign was not aware their ads were running on the offending Web sites, and has taken steps to block those sites from their online advertising network.

"When we find stuff like this, we take care of it," said McCain spokesman Brian Rogers.

McCain has made it known he is reaching out to former Clinton supporters, and there are nearly two hundred well-trafficked blogs and online communities run by former Clinton supporters who refuse to support Obama. But the three sites on which McCain's ads appeared are particularly hostile to the Illinois senator.

One Web site, called Stop-Obama.org, is a group blog comprised of disaffected Clinton supporters, some of whom are now supporting McCain. Three different banners ads, one of which featured McCain standing side-by-side with Sen. Joseph Lieberman, were running on the site until Monday.

A recent post on the blog outlined the "simple parallels" between Obama and Hitler, and accused Obama's audiences of having the same cult mentality that characterized followers of the German dictator.

McCain's ads have also shown up on a pro-Clinton Web site named "Obama WTF" that accuses Obama of being "spineless," having "communist influences," "courting Jew haters" and being "in the pocket of America haters."

SavagePolitics.com, another anti-Obama site that has been targeted with McCain ads, has called Obama a "bold faced liar, a thief, a sexist and a racist."

The McCain campaign pulled the ads Monday evening after they were pointed out by CNN.

Rogers said the campaign often has no control over where their ads show up on the Web. That’s because the campaign uses a third party vendor — in this case, Google — to distribute their banner ads across a broad array of political Web sites by searching for certain key words.

When the campaign is made aware of ads appearing on offensive or irrelevant Web sites, Rogers said, they notify the ad distributor and have the sites added to a list of blocked URLs. He noted the McCain campaign has already blocked "tens of thousands" of such sites.

It's not the first time a campaign has been forced to remove ads from controversial Web sites.

Mitt Romney's campaign found itself in the politically awkward position of advertising on the Web site Gay.com in late 2007, prompting the Web site to pull the ad shortly after it was discovered.

Last September, Barack Obama's campaign removed a campaign advertisement that appeared on the Amazon.com page for the controversial book "The Israel Lobby," which asserts that a network of influential pro-Israel activists hold undue sway over U.S. foreign policy.

I cant believe that mccain ran ads on those web sites to begin with.
I think the people who run those ads think like hitler and are ran by the
same people who voted for hillary because Rush limbrugh (or whatever his name is) told them too. They are not independent and
were never democrates but always were republician swiftboaters.

Michelle, let me first say that I can tell you're one of the Obama camp's overeducated supporters. How can I tell? Your superb grasp of the English language! "pissed off" …"move up there primaries." Stellar language skills!
As for Democrats uniting, has it ever occurred that we democrats that will not support Obama in the fall have reasons other than being angry? We question Obama's motives and sincerity. We believe that Obama has his own best interest at heart and not the best interest of the nation. Obama reminds us too much of G.W. Bush, he is running on nothing but arrogance and rhetoric, much as Bush did in 2000. We will not support a candidate we don’t believe in just because he is of our party. Sorry, some of us don’t care to be lemmings and jump off a cliff just because others do. We will sit back and enjoy the show. And if Obama wins and surprises us by showing us he is able to lead, we may support him in 2012. For now my motto is “anyone but Obama!”

Nate   July 1st, 2008 2:12 pm ET

Clinton supporters are voting for McCain for a variety of reasons. I don't believe any woman who was voting for Hillary because she is a woman would vote for McCain, if they are that's not the reason they voted for Hillary. I believe these people are voting based on brand name, not issues. They knew the Clinton name and now are more familiar with McCain's name. Some people say it's trust. Of those people what is it you trust. You trust the republicans to get us out of the mess their policies have created. You trust McCain even though he's changed his position seemingly to appeal to the far right. It's ok to change your mind but these are things he proportedly staunchly believed in. I think it has more to do with you don't trust Obama because of his name, his race, or his "lack of experience." What kind of experience are you looking for? Our foriegn policy guru's have really hit the nail on the head lately. So have the economic advisers who created the mortgage mess. So have the greedy politicians who sold out to big oil.

to all of the hillary or noone crew: shut up and sit down, everyone is tired of your blab, do what you feel you must and stop yelping about it.
to all of the obnoxious obama herd: shut up and sit down, everyone is tired of your endless arrogance, your slander, and your name calling.
we the people are free to vote for whomever we choose. we choose based on beliefs, ethics, judgement, character, honor, integrity, and whether we think this person will be the best for the job. if we do not support obama it is not because we are racist, stupid, or uneducated. if we dont support clinton it isnt because we are arrogant, elitist, sexists. we support the candidate we believe in and we will not change our minds just because you called us names again. in fact the more names you call us the less we like your candidate.

THIS IS 2004 ALL OVER AGAIN. SENATOR OBAMA HAS IT RIGHT. JOHN MCCAIN IS RUNNING FOR A 3RD BUSH TERM AND HE IS RUNNING HIS CAMPAIGN JUST AS BUSH DID IN 2004. MCCAIN HAS LOST ALL MY RESPECT AND I COULD CARE LESS WHAT HIS WAR HISTORY IS? HE HAS LOST MY RESPECT COMPLETELY. COME ON MEDIA, START TALKING ABOUT THE ISSUES. WE AS AMERICANS DESERVE MORE THAN THIS. michelle   July 1st, 2008 1:46 pm ET

Why doesn't cnn cover some of the disgusting attitudes of the obama supporters on all the blogs and you tube comments, and everywhere else. McCain supporters at least aren't threatning and seem to know more about their candidate. Some of the obama people seem to think their voting for american idol or rooting for a sports team. And their not only arrogant, but rude, and continue to attack hillary supporters. If hillary supporters want to be stupid and beleive what they beleive, let them do it. its called freedom of speech and opinion. why do they blame the mccain campaign?

Also, how about covering how the obama camp is paying people to stand by the computer all day and retort anyones opinion that isn't in favor of obama. Isn't that a little manipulative, and misleading.

Obama is an unbelievable candidate but pretends to be this candidate of change, but behind the scenes he gets his campaign to do all the dirty work.

Chicosez, just because someone voted for Obama does not make them new to the "party". I'm a lifelong dem like you and made a clear choice for Obama. The reason the Supers went with Obama is because they or their constituents wanted to do so. (Note that not all the Supers went to Obama. Some endorsed Clinton.) The reality is that it was a close primary and Sen. Obama came out on top. And don't even start with MI and FL; we all know that Sen. Clinton suddenly became interestd in those states AFTER Super Tuesday when her campaign showed the first signs of trouble. Stay or leave the "party". It's entirely up to you.

Comparing Obama to Hitler is ridiculous and spiteful. The similarity is that both "inspired a cult-like following"? Why don't we just compare Elvis, or the Beatles, or the Pope, for that matter, to Hitler, for their zealous followers? Highly educated people can see right through the tactics that the republican/conservative smear machine is using– high emotion-evoking terms and comparisons that confuse and warp sensible thought. It is a shame that Americans allow themselves to be manipulated in this way.

Justin, Ohio   July 1st, 2008 1:28 pm ET

What's really funny is that McCain's political views are more equivalent to Democrats than BO's very left wing, liberal views. Yet Democrats aren't looking at political views, they're looking at race. I hope the country soon opens their eyes to the views than to the race. And for anyone who calls the Republicans racist, who freed the slaves? You'll find Abraham Lincoln (a Republican) did.

JB   July 1st, 2008 1:27 pm ET

It's funny how during the primaries Obama supporters were saying that Hillary was so much different from Obama on issues and represented old Washington politics, but now that they want Hillary's supporters to support Obama they are saying that Hillary and Obama political issues are the same. Who do you think you are fooling? Nothing New or Fresh here. Obama = same old Washington politics.

"A recent post on the blog outlined the 'simple parallels' between Obama and Hitler, and accused Obama's audiences of having the same cult mentality that characterized followers of the German dictator."

This is probably the most honest statement made recently regarding Obama and his non-thinking followers. Although "cult mentality" with regard to Obama followers is probably a bit of an understatement.

This OPINION is based entirely on the silliness displayed on CNN by said Obama supporters. The typical post is lacking in any critical thought and usually includes immature name calling such as "McBush" or other nonsense.

Vig   July 1st, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Hillary Clinton has become the nation's 3rd choice for President when she should have been the nation's 1st choice. Nonetheless, you can still vote her in by printing her name as a write-in candidate on your November ballot. Clinton got skewed and screwed while Obama was the beneficiary of her trash and bash. Thanks to media men who control the news organizations such as CNN, MSNBC, FOX NEWS, NBC. we now have an inflated smiley faced Obama that we have to hear all about as if he has now become the authority on everything. Women should be outraged.

ML:

The problem with reading BO's policies is that they are "just words".

He has NEVER done anything while in office….mostly because his current office was nothing more than a VERY temporary stepping stone to his next audatious move. He has NO track record of backing up any of his promises. He is a puppet, saying whatever is necessarry to cater to the current direction the wind is blowing. For those of you who are voting for him ONLY because he promises to bring the troops out of Iraq, don't hold your breath. He's already started to waffle big time on that. This election is about a complex web of issues. You'd better base your vote on proven track record instead of a list of promises.

Just let him sit there in his flip-flops and finish his waffle. Then he'll get right back to serving up another hearty portion of "just words".

Michelle   July 1st, 2008 1:18 pm ET

I love how some of the Clinton supporters forget that Obama got 17,869,542 votes in the primaries. Although I don't agree, I do understand the feelings about Florida and Michigan. But be pissed off at your state legislator for breaking the rules. The DNC and Obama did not make Michigan or Florida move up there primaries.

hey Sean from Canada
you are quoting from McCain's strategy not obama, he wanted to pull them out unconditionally as soon as he got into office within 16 months. of course like every thing else about him it's borrowed strategy just like the ones he took from Clinton. now tell me this when he pulls the troops out and al-qaeda returns and he sends the troops back in what will you Canadians do with the deserters who won't go back give them refuge like you do now. how do you work that out, one American deserter allowed for every Canadian killed fighting in Afghanistan

Cathy   July 1st, 2008 1:12 pm ET

That is a gracious move on McCain's part but McCain needs to check himself regarding offensive remarks. McCain fundraiser statement about Hamas supporting Obama was completely out of line.

Second, why can't the Republicans try and win the election on actual issues and not Clinton -Type Kitchen Sink strategies filled with word twisting, hate and fear. I hope the rest of the country sees Obama is already doing the change he speaks of by not doing the personal destruction, smear, lie, tactics of his major opponants thus far. It is a true statement that Hitler made great speeches which brought him to power in Germany. And it is a true statement that Obama makes great speeches that might bring him to power in America.

Hitler had an idea about how the world should work and acted on it. Obama has an idea about how the world should work and is trying to act on it.

Make whatever judgement you want about other similarities but those are historically factual statements.

Um, Ted that can be said for about half our presidents. No the fact remains, Hitler gave speeches filled with hate and blame. Obama gives speeches filled with ideas and issues. And your other "factual statement" is ridiculous, I have an idea how the world should work and I'm trying to act on it, so now I'm Hitler (keep in mind half my family died in the Holocaust). NO candidate (McCain or Obama) is anything CLOSE to Hitler. To say that is spitting on all the graves that Hitler produced. My family was closely divided between Obama and Hillary, but now that Obama is the nominee EVERYONE is voting for him. Not because we are "Obamites" but because we read their policies which are almost exactly the same. Please people think of your ancestors when writing such hateful comments!

I sincerely hope that Clinton supporters know the weight of their actions. If even a fraction of the 18 million Hillary supporters do indeed vote for McCain in November as a means to get her on the ticket in 2012, then they are not only compromising their principles but also dividing the party. They will forget that revenge is best served cold.. Obama supporters won't vote for her in 2012 and that guarantees Republican rule for the next 8 years. McCain seems to be the only person with integrity in this race. Obama sure has none.
——————–

Integrity? Calling Carter the worse president ever – has he ever actually taken a look at the damage Bush has done to this nation? Why is it he can always explain his flip flops and mispeaks off to "he forgot" or some other lame excuse? Apparently he and Rove are in bed together and the things Rove did to him back when Bush was running is forgotten.

The Republican party has NO integrity. It's all about the rich and what's in it for them. They swiftboated Kerry and McCain didn't like being on the receiving end when Clark stated a FACT that Obama should have never apologized for.

I think the best thing that could happen for America is for the Republican party to implode.

Blah Blah Blah, same old same old. I agree about the Brittany Mentality from our media. I'm so disgusted by the media coverage of the entire campaign season. All they wish to report is bickering, hate, and rumors. Here we are only a few short months away from the election in Nov, and we still don't know who the VP picks are yet.

What about the issues? What about the problems we're facing? I bet 90% of journalists can't identify 10 differences between the candidates.

Just for the record, I'm conservative-libertarian, I was a Ron Paul supporter, and now, I'm behind Barr.

I cannot vote for Obama because, he abandoned his post as senator from IL as quickly as he was elected to run another campaign. He has accomplished nothing legislatively for our country. He's too wet behind the ears to take the top job. The policies he's advocating will tear our country further apart. The latest rumor I've heard is that Obama isn't actually a natural born citizen, making him ineligible for the job.

I cannot vote for McCain either. McCain is too old for the job. McCain has continued to pander to the same people who supported Bush. The last thing we need is another 4 more years. If we elect McCain, it's probably only for the VP he picked to ascend to the presidency after McCain kicks the bucket.

I can't believe a word either Obama or McCain says. Nader, Baldwin, and many other third parties won't be on enough ballots to even have a shot at winning. Bob Barr and the libertarian party will be on the ballots in almost all states.

Given my options, it's an easy choice. I'm Behind Bob Barr

The PUMA organization is larger and growing larger every day, but the fact is, the PUMA MENTALITY is sweepingly and overwhelmingly prevalent in our country. The majority of Americans are somewhere in the middle on the "political meter". Obama 's pendulum swings WAY too far to the left. Most Americans are appalled at the thought of handing over the reigns of this country to a man who holds Marxist teachings and philosophy in such high regard (this is his own admission, not an accusation– read his books).

It's so easy to spew hate when you can hide behind some nickname. I would bet my last dollar that 98% of the hate mongerers wouldn't open their mouths if they had the chance to say what they write in a public forum.

If you are such loyal Hillary supporters why are you shunning her now when she is asking you to support Obama? Remember, she and Barack's ideas for the future are very similar and therefore wouldn't it be logical to vote for Barack rather than McCain.

I honestly don't understand you. Please make me understand why you are going to vote for McCain even though you are a democrat. And I don't want the crap about him being a liar, a muslim, unpatriotic, etc. I want to know policy wise why you are going to vote for McCain even though you will not get healthcare, he knows nothing about economics, he is for keeping the troops in Iraq, he wants to bomb Iran, he is going to do nothing about gas prices. Please enlighten me.

ChicoSez   July 1st, 2008 12:19 pm ET

The reason former Clinton supporters are forming groups like PUMA is that we feel that the dem establishment, Dean/Kennedy/Kerry/Pelosi pressured the super delegates to vote for Obama because the could control Obama more than they could Hillary. And yes, I really was a life-long yellow dog dem till this primary season. I have backed the dem party with money and time for decades, and I've got the cancelled checks and autographed pictures to prove it. Have any of you Obama people ever worked in an off year campaign or ever donated money to anybody other than Obama? McCain was quick to accuse Obama in having a role in Gen. Clark's dumb comment (without verifying whether Obama campaign or Obama himself had any role) about his qualification as a President but has so far said nothing about his buddy Joe Lieberman's (a turncoat) stupid comment about expecting a terrorist attack on US next year. It is a shame that someone like Lieberman would say something like this to bring in the "fear factor" since there is no other point on which McCain can outscore Obama in the coming election. It's also pitiful since Lieberman should be aware that the democrats lost in 2004 based on this issue and nothing else. See what we got during the last four years based on this lie!!! There is a limit to how long one can be vengeful for not getting the party nomination for senate election last time. Joe Liebernman you are pitiful!!!

I can't believe so many Clinton supporters won't support Obama. With as much as they have in common it just doensn't make sense. I have to believe that republicans may have infiltrated the Pro-Clinton groups and are fueling this Anti-Obama movement from within those groups. I understand being disappointed, but to throw away your values and beliefs out of spite is ridiculous and dare I say unpatriotic. Clinton supporters: please do not be divisive petty when it come to the direction of our country. The country needs your help to get back on the path to peace and prosperity. Our children need you. Let's put aside our feelings and do what is best for this nation.

If only people would take a step back from their SELF RIGHTEOUS EGO and see that choosing to vote for McCain over Obama since you're candidate, Hillary lost shows you never had true convictions of your own.
You all just flip flop like the candidate you are flocking to, McCain.

Vote your economic interest and for someone that is actually laying out a plan for what THEY will do, Obama. McCain hasn't given substantive or concrete stances on healthcare, economy. Only thing he touts is foreign policy experience of which he voted for a WAR in iraq.
I give McCain credit for the attempt at decency I've seen him run with and great courage and character, I even like some of his ideas on taxes and immigration but the full package is OBAMA..

Why wasn't Obama at the town hall meeting? Oh, right, he's busy hugging people, emailing starlets, riding bikes, bowling, playing basketball, going on vacation, being adored by the MSM, reading speeches while he points his finger and holds his head at what he apparently thinks is a Presidential angle, throwing people under the bus, designing idiotic VERY presumptuous logos, hanging out with criminals, and scared to death of any questions or debate. All he can do well is read a speech and play the race card. He's gonna have a hard time pulling the race card with McCain, though. Poor Obama – there goes his whole campaign strategy right down the drain…..

He is a skunk – pure and simple – black and white and stinks to high heaven

this appears to be a theme with McCain that he did not know the ads are being played in anti-Obama website. He did not know that his advisor charlie black has said a terrorist attack will benefit McCain. He did not know that the fundraiser at Texas is from an individual who says women should enjoy being raped. He did not know that the majority of his staff are lobbiest. He also says he does not know about the economy. Clearly, we should take his word that he does not know anything because he does not vet his staff and his policies are a joke. Thank you McCain for your honesty.

Reagan

Sorry, folks, but McCain has run a far cleaner campaign then either Obama or Clintons–now that Obama and the Clintons have meshed, there will be far more dirty tricks behind the scenes. You people really are deluisional if you think it was McCain in all those ads. Hillary supporters are the ones who smeared Obama every inch of the way in the primaries. Now you are trying to blame McCain who was not even campaigning at the time. Wirght, Rezko , the priest,Ayers, and others were from your own trusted DEMS! Even the racist blabber came from democrats!

Steve   July 1st, 2008 11:44 am ET

Jon,

Patriotism in the United States is speaking your mind and taking action for what you believe in. Mindlessly following the propoganda of the leadership is NOT patriotism. Our country was founded on the principles that you can have an opposing opinion. Read the Constitution (obviously Bush never has, but then again, he can barely read). Read the Bill of Rights. The doctrines layed out in those documents are what patriotism is composed of. What Bush and the rest of that bunch call patriotism is the machinations of people who play to people with simple minds and only a vague understanding of our country's foundations. Don't fall into the trap of wrapping the flag around every agenda you want to promote, right or wrong. The Nazis did that. Their population blindly followed them. Look what happened. Had their been the strong right to protest, perhaps World War II wouldn't have happened.

Calling people unpatriotic simply because they don't see things your way is incredibly stupid. Get a life.

Cathy in MD   July 1st, 2008 11:43 am ET

Hillary Clinton needs to speak out against this! Unfortunately for him, McCain has inadvertently fallen into the dark trenches where the casualties of the war waged by the Clinton campaign hide out. They conspire to undermine and exploit what is good about this country. McCain seems so out of touch, I don’t think he can be held accountable. Watch out, Senator McCain. It's dirty work being a vulture. On the other hand, Hillary IS in touch, and should be held accountable. I think much of this hostility was cultivated by the tone of her campaign. Remember that these disgruntled, one-time Clinton supporters are among those 18 million voters for which Hillary demanded we show respect. Respect them? She, Bill, and all their surrogates should publicly condemn them.

obama is exactly right, and has been from the start of this fiasco. we were called unpatriotic for not supporting a "war" that the administration now freely admits they lied us into, THAT is unpatriotic—and THAT is the neoCON republicans!

the occupation in iraq IS a disaster!

the neoCONs' "war" is unamerican and undemocratic—and soon they will pay the price for it from a parent or spouse who lost a loved one or The Hague, but either way, these criminal neoCONs are going down and i cannot wait to see it. although i'm sure that the cowardly cheney, rummy, bush, etc.. will run off to Dubai the moment their time in the WH is up—COWARDS!!!!!!!!!

Good for you, John McCain!   July 1st, 2008 11:38 am ET

- By the way, Obama has a lot of gall to campaign in Independence, the home of Harry Truman, a man who stood his ground against America's enemies.
- Want some of Harry's "glory" to rub off on you, eh, Obama? Can't be done, ever.
- Harry was a fighter, not a quitter. He weighed all the options, made a decision, and stuck with it.
- NO waffling around for Harry, as is daily the case with you, Obama.
- Think Harry would have "negotiated" with terrorists? Not on your life.
- Think Harry would have stayed in a church like yours for 20 years — or even 2 minutes? Think again.
- Harry demonstrated patriotism through courage and commitment, NOT empty slogans.
- You, Obama, can "posture" in any "symbolic" place you want.
- You're still the emperor with no clothes — and all the kiddies will continue to go "AHHH" isn't he cute! And Harry's having a good laugh.
- What IS symbolically accurate, though, is that gal offering you the shirt off her back
- Because if YOU should become president, We'll ALL need her shirt.

Most of those "SWITFT BOATERS" are scared people, they are afraid that if someone whom they do not agree with is in power their way of life will be threatened! THAT'S JUST NOT TRUE!

I find it rather shocking that these pro-HRC websites accuse Obama supporters of being cult-like when it is actually the HRC supporters who are acting cult-like. There is no reason for these sites to compare a good man to Hitler. Come on that is just crazy!!!

I've said it before and I will say it again this election has really shown what the we the American people are; and I wouldn't call us open minded and progressive. The ignorance is astounding!!

Pumas are Now Republicans   July 1st, 2008 11:10 am ET

Hey Hillary Democrat, there is NO SUCH THING SHE ISN'T RUNNING ANYMORE!

Listen, seriously, REAL Democrats, we need to start paying attention to this, I'm starting to realize a pattern. I think some people are having seriously mental issues, because they still think the primary season is still here; like January 2008, they think she still has a chance of clinching the nomination. They are stuck in the past, and can't move forward and it angers them that some people have moved on (like most of her 18 million supporters). What do they call people in total denial… a PUMA.

So these People Under Mental Anguish, don't deserve our ridicule, they need our help. We should all donate money for their therapy (instead of Clinton's campaign debt) and medication because obviously, this is some type of condition. I am starting to feel badly for you because you are stuck in this grieving process; stuck between denial and anger. I swear I think some of you wake up in the morning being mad about the primary still! I think we should start booking up therapy sessions now, before January 2009, when they are swearing him in as POTUS. We can't have them showing up all crazy a YEAR later, with signs that say "Hillary for President" and "I'm always going to be bitter about something" trying to ruin it for the rest of the country. I think we should be pro-active and help mentally ill citizens. Who's with me?

Readpeople   July 1st, 2008 11:10 am ET

Anyone familiar with how Google ads work? It's not McCain's campaign paying these websites to advertise. It's google placing his ads on certain sites based on key words. According to the article, even Barack Obama has had problems with google ads when his ad appeard on a page for an anti Israel book. If that wasn't his fault then this isn't McCains. It's sad how certain people will react to any story about John McCain with insults and rude comments while claiming to support the candidate who wants to "change" the way politics is done in this country.

And those websites you want to blame him for? They are run by Hillary Clinton supporters who are bitter and angry about the fact that she was beaten by a man.

STOP THE MADNESS. VOTE OBAMA.

Mike - Texas   July 1st, 2008 11:05 am ET

.
Let's face facts.

McCain is trying to run a "FAR CLEANER" campaign than Obama is.

Obama has his cronies come out a make false statements and the comes out 2 – 3 days later to refute those statements just to make himself look above the fray.

Joe the Troll   July 1st, 2008 11:04 am ET

So now it's McCain who sends his minions out to attack and then denying it so he'll look better. Isn't that what the Repubs have been accusing Obama of?

Phil, FL   July 1st, 2008 11:03 am ET

Release all 600 pages of your military record – we have a right to know.

You demanded it of Kerry, now it's demanded of you.

Hey, CNN. His records would keep you all in headlines for weeks. Why can't you go after it?

Bye bye, McCain

Yes we can, PA   July 1st, 2008 11:03 am ET

Sen. McCain,
You are a day late and a dollar short. How timely that your campaign issued this declaration on Monday AFTER Sen. Obama spoke out against questioning anyone's patriotism. Sure you didn't know your ads were running on anti-Obama sites. Sure you are distancing yourself from calling him (and his wife) unpatriotic and comparing him to Hitler….NOW!

You are a war hero, but with regard to this election…You're also a phony.

Independant Woman, Texas   July 1st, 2008 11:03 am ET

I'm glad McCain is doing this, but it is truly a shame that Obama has to deal with smears from the GOP and from Clinton supporters. I know that some of her more hateful supporters are Republicans but some of them really are Democrats. It is disgusting that they are resorting to spreading these lies and rumors.

The Republican Party is now marketing itself to African Americans on the basis of some of the things Clinton and her supporters have said and done in this campaign. You know it is bad when Black Republicans start running ads about how racist the Democratic party is, especially when the Republican Party has done NOTHING to level the playing field for minorities in the last 150 years!

ANGIE   July 1st, 2008 11:02 am ET

so i guess that is where we can find the PUMA website on mccains smearing site for obama i agree with most you think mccain would learn after what BUSH KARL ROVE ETC did to him i thought john mccain said he wanted to run a clean campaign well looks to me not so clean lobbisit smear sites wheres the clean john oh thats right you flip flop so much or did you forget what you said mccain you are pathetic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The hardcore Hillary supporters are not supporting McCain……they are just voing against Obama. Birds of a feather flock together. Amazing how hypocritical humility works.

ms.sims   July 1st, 2008 11:00 am ET

I think instead of the media giving these groups exposure…they should be EXPOSING them for what they are. A number of these groups are ran by republicans whom claim they are lifelong democrats!! Recently the founder of Puma Pac was exposed for donating to McCain's 2000 presidential campaign and voting for him in the primaries. But claims to be a "lifetime dem" Barack wasn't around then so what was your excuse? Oh wait her excuse was she was doing 'everything' in her power to prevent GWB from getting the nomination. But she never says that she supported Gore financially or by voting for him once his nomination was secured…and they call Obama the wolf in sheep's clothing. Please dems look at who you are supporting when your joining these groups!! The vast majority of Hillary's supporters are behind Barack, most of the others were Repubs anyways who crossed over just to vote for a women candidate and now they're tip toeing back over to their side and trying to take the real "lifelong" dems with them…NOt This Time..RUSH!

I don't buy the fact that McCain's campaign was unaware of these websites spewing hatred towards Obama. Don't they vet first ?
It is very scary that there exists such hatred and ignorance towards Obama, comparing him to Hitler ? Insanity at its best. And to Mike who questions Obama's patriotiosm because he did not serve in the military….did you ? I didn't, doesn't make me any less patriotic than anyone else in this country. However, I think Obama has shown his patriosm, serving within this country as a public servant, his service to Chicago and in the Senate. I show my patriosm by being a part of society every day. Patriosm is reflected in many ways.

Clinton, no, wait, McCain Supporter: "Any criticism of BO is met with hate and condescension. "

Really? Actually, I see more initial offerings of hate and outpourings of derision against BO in the first place. A lot of us are just responding to this absolute drivel you people feel the need to "bless" us with. How can you call Obama all of these things (thief, liar, racist, sexist, Hitler?!?!?!) and expect it to be "criticism," but any response is a slander? Bottom line: You shouldn't be running a campaign on hate. Period.

PUMAs, NoBamas, and maybe even a few VotePact people don't seem to grasp the maturity that you have to do what you say before you can tell other people what is what. All those hate web sites are ten times closer to Nazis than anything Obama could say. Like the white supremecist literature that people throw on my lawn at 3 in the morning because they are too cowardly to hate in broad daylight.

Just stop the hate. Period. Read my text: YOUR… ACTIONS… ARE… RIDICULOUS!

Do you really expect me to believe that McCain and his staff had no clue as to those adds. Give me a break, American's as a whole are a lot smarter than that.
On a different note, those so called Hillary supporters that are running those questionable sites; are they or were they really Hillary supporters? I would argue that those sites are truly being run by republicans that followed the "Rush" policy of just voting to build up Hillary's numbers. Or they are actually republicans running those sites pretending to be Hillary supporters, that way the republicans will not have to take any heat for their ugly, hateful, and very degrading sites. This year politics are stooping to a new and very ugly level and the owners of those sites should be thankful they live in America, as this is the only country where truth is not relevent.

It is ridiculous for the McCain campaign to say it is "powerless" to prevent advertising on web sites that include indecent, hateful (of women, blacks, people with big ears), unamerican, or sophomoric content.

Stop being lazy and investigate the media outlet, the web site, BEFORE you give them your ad content and your money, it's that simple.

If you don't, it will only RE-ENFORCE to the general public that you are not computer, internet, google, yahoo, twitter, facebook, or YouTube savvy.

You also said the same thing with regards to public funding restraints for the campaign with Obama. Had you not said, " I can not referee Republican-leaning 527s", Obama probably would have not opted out. You know that was the deal, John. In the end, that was the root cause.

Such weak statements also call into question your actual leadership capability; how do you get things accomplished when you can't ORDER them to be done?

How do you get them done when the people required don't WORK for YOU, John? We're not seeing that in your experience claim.

Being the President IS NOT like the military where you have a chain of command and people have to SALUTE and execute based on your rank.

Judging from the number of voters who supported Hillary and are now claiming to support McCain, it is confirmed that Hillary would have been the wrong choice for the Democrats.

As a previous writer points out, most of McCain's positions on the issues are the exact opposite of Hillary's. Most of Hillary's positions are the same or similar to Obama's.

So explain to me why you "Hillary/McCain" supporters were behind Hillary in the first place? I'm really curious.

Unfortunately, many of these "Democrats" who supported Hillary are now saying they support or will support McCain. How can any informed American, let alone Democrat, seriously contemplate voting for another Bush term in the guise of John McCain?!

Obama fans do, indeed, have the same cult mentality that put Adolph into power, as witnessed by these blogs. Any criticism of BO is met with hate and condescension. Even though Obama has finally recognized publicly the extraordinary contributions of both Clintons, his followers continue their hate-filled remarks. It's coming to the point where he has no control over them – or does he?

His double messages throughout the campaign and his well-placed surrogates make the picture of these followers as genuinely mentally enslaved. I don't which is worse: that Americans should be taken in by this behavior and elect him or that we should not and elect McCain.

A McCain victory may well be accompanied by violence, particularly in the inner cities, where BO holds the image of a demi-god. Well, we have inner city violence down now. We know how to handle it.
But a BO victory will introduce measures of Americans"
"loyalty" to him and make pc critical everywhere. I wonder if we'll see the re-introduction of McCarthy style hearings regarding loyalty.

If you participate in any of them and you "claim" to be a Hillary Clinton supporter you must be lying. If you care at all about politics or the world, you would not support McCain after supporting Hillary.

-What about protecting (rather than destroying) a woman's right to choose?
-What about ending the senseless war in Iraq?
-What about the economy? Do you think McCain has a plan other than a "gas tax holiday"? He doesn't.
-What about the supreme court justices to be nominated by the next president?
-What about social justice and repairing America's damaged image and connections abroad?

A constitution scholar and a pow, who is more patriotic?

Hey Clinton Supporters!   July 1st, 2008 10:17 am ET

Why are you crazy? Are your feelings hurt enough to where you would donate money to attack your fellow democrat, Senator Obama? Is it b/c you're all sore losers? I'm beginning to think they're a bunch of republicans saying they were former Clinton supporters and are now against Obama.

PS Don't call yourself democrats anymore

Down with Obama   July 1st, 2008 10:17 am ET

CNN you are dirty and in the pocket of Obama….how are your ratings?????

pam Eugene OR   July 1st, 2008 10:17 am ET

I am sure McCain stopped right away and never knew it was anti Obama. NOT!

T GUY   July 1st, 2008 10:16 am ET

OBAMA WILL BE PRESIDENT AND THE STUPID HILLARY SUPPORTERS CAN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.

Dave P   July 1st, 2008 10:16 am ET

If there are Democrats that used to support Hillary that feel Obama is like Hitler and now want to support McCain then I say let him keep them! We do not need people like that in the Democratic Party. Our country needs help. It isn't getting it from the Republicans, actually the opposite. We need to get behind Obama and support him and the Democratic Party.

"A spokesman for McCain said Monday the campaign was not aware their ads were running on the offending Web sites"

What a crock. When McCain's campaign does stuff like this, they are patronizing the American public – they think we actually believe this?

Same old tricks…

Charlie   July 1st, 2008 10:16 am ET

Man, some Clinton supporters are a bunch of crybabies. What's going to really be fun is when they vote for McCain, he wins, and then they realize that they just earned themselves at least four more years of Bush.

Danny in Ohio   July 1st, 2008 10:15 am ET

McWho cares… I don't even read these articles when they have his name in them because the topics are always the same… he's just so… BLAH.

KMAN   July 1st, 2008 10:15 am ET

Any group claiming to be pro-Hillary while trying to slander Obama never were truly Hillary supporters … they are simply self-serving foolish and without the mental compentancy to see that McCain in no way actually represents their self-serving agenda! Hell hath no furry like self-serving middle-aged women scorned!

BlayzeKohime   July 1st, 2008 10:15 am ET

I do not like John McCain, but at the very least he has a more civil tone than George W Bush ever has.

bob   July 1st, 2008 10:14 am ET

ya, you thought you could keep saying Obama this Obama that and you won't be attacked or swiftboated? Now I am thinking what makes you more qualified to be a commander in chief. Being a POW, or riding 35000 feet as a pilot doesn't mean you are more patriotic than Obama or more qualified than Obama. He is has a more compelling story than you do!

Vote Nader   July 1st, 2008 10:14 am ET

How come everytime there is a political ticker entry about Sen. McCain it is about action, policy or leadership. But most of the one's about Sen. Obama are about having shirts offered to him, riding a bike, talking to someone on the phone, about how uninteresting he is or something trivial like that? Kind of makes you wonder, doesn't it?

The only "anti-Obama" website you need to visit is vote nader (dot) org. Check it out. It's more useful than any of the ones mentioned above.

No more speeches for Obama only debates.

Bulldog   July 1st, 2008 10:13 am ET

Glad to see McCon pulled his ads, but just like most other things his upfront judgement was bad and he had to go back and correct his actions. Just like New Orleans and the latest Midwest floods, McCon is a day late and a dollar short.

AdamW   July 1st, 2008 10:13 am ET

These Obama haters who now support McCain are nuts. How do you compare Obama to Hitler? Why would you claim to be a democrat and than support a republican just to make a point Obviously they only liked Clinton because she was a woman. If they believed in her ideas they would vote for a democrat.

Loretta from California   July 1st, 2008 10:13 am ET

This is good, for a beginning. Now maybe McCain can do something about all of the LIES that his surrogates are distributing. That "Rezko helped to buy his house" Lie for example. The whitey Lie. Unpatriotic Lie, the he's Muslim Lie. The GOP Lies are endless. I'm so happy that he has taken the time to clear up this misleading information on his website under fight the smears.

DEMOCRATS UNITE!!!

HH   July 1st, 2008 10:12 am ET

The McCain campaign is pure scum. I can not wait until election night when the votes come in and McCain gets pounded 49-40.

This man is toooooooooooo old and senial. Did anyone every think he might have PTSD after his experience in Vietnam. This is one man whos finger should be no where near the red button. God help us all if he is elected, this country will be a third world one.

Roofin Reality, Houston, Tx.   July 1st, 2008 10:12 am ET

Nice of Senator McCain to do so.
Looks like Senator Obama was the trailblazer in this – he took very similar action 9 months ago.

katiec   July 1st, 2008 10:11 am ET

Poor innocent McCain, he didn't know.
One of his chief advisors is an expert on smear
campaigning.
You would think after what Bush/Rove did to him with
smears he would want to run a cleam campaign.
Evidently not.

Pro-choice, pro-dem   July 1st, 2008 10:10 am ET

You know how whacko and extreme the bitter Clinton-istas are if even John McCain is running away from them.

They should all move to Canada. It's cold and bitter up there, just like the souls of the Clinton-istas.

Sue   July 1st, 2008 10:08 am ET

McCain, just let the Americans freely express themselves. They see Obama just like I do: a tragedy for America.

Phil Newton Oregon   July 1st, 2008 10:06 am ET

Pathetic.
