Obama and McCain are in a statistical dead heat.
Obama and McCain are in a statistical dead heat.

(CNN) — With the dust having finally settled after the prolonged Democratic presidential primary, a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll shows Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama locked in a statistical dead heat in the race for the White House.

With just over four months remaining until voters weigh in at the polls, the new survey out Tuesday indicates Obama holds a narrow 5-point advantage among registered voters nationwide over the Arizona senator, 50 percent to 45 percent. That represents little change from a similar poll one month ago, when the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee held a 46-43 percent edge over McCain.

CNN Polling Director Keating Holland notes Tuesday's survey confirms what a string of national polls released this month have shown: Obama holds a slight advantage over McCain, though not a big enough one to constitute a statistical lead.

"Every standard telephone poll taken in June has shown Obama ahead of McCain, with nearly all of them showing Obama's margin somewhere between three and six points," Holland said. "In most of them, that margin is not enough to give him a lead in a statistical sense, but it appears that June has been a good month for Obama."

But the new CNN/ORC polls shows the race gets even tighter when the two most prominent third-party presidential candidates are considered. In a four way match-up that includes independent candidate Ralph Nader and Libertarian candidate Bob Barr, Obama's lead over McCain dwindles to 3 percentage points, 46 percent to 43 percent. (Nader registers 6 percent while Barr gets 3 percent.)

But it remains unclear just how much effect Nader and Barr will have on the election, as summertime surveys often overstate the eventual Election Day showing of third-party candidates.

"A useful rule of thumb is that third-party candidates in November get no more than half the support polls show them having in June or July," Holland said.

Meanwhile, one day after the Illinois senator sharply defended his devotion to America during a high-profile speech in the crucial swing state of Missouri, the new survey shows some voters continue to have lingering questions about his patriotism.

One quarter of all registered voters say Obama lacks patriotism, according to the poll. That breaks down to 10 percent of Democrats, 29 percent of Independents, and 40 percent of Republicans who say Obama lacks patriotism.

But it's likely the issue will not have a significant impact this fall.

"Strategically speaking, the question is not how many people consider Obama unpatriotic — it's how many people consider Obama unpatriotic who would have voted for him otherwise," Holland said "Most of the respondents who think Obama is unpatriotic are Republicans. That indicates that Obama may not have lost a lot of votes — so far — on this matter."

McCain, a former Navy pilot and prisoner of war during Vietnam, is viewed as being patriotic by 90 percent of all registered voters.

The poll, conducted June 26-29, surveyed 906 registered voters and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

"1% or 10% a win is a win"…
It is only if they additionally carry the electorial college. Bush won by 3% 4 years ago, but a 100k shift in Ohio could have elected Kerry. If the race is within a couple percentage points it could go either way.

ben2   July 1st, 2008 9:17 pm ET

not that anyone reads past the first few comments, but if the margin of error is 3.5 points, how would a 5-point lead be considered a "dead heat"?

Matt   July 1st, 2008 9:16 pm ET

I know that others have said this, but it needs to be repeated- this is not a statistical dead heat. Obama's lead is outside the margin of error, which means that the difference is statistically significant.

hey retards at CNN - when one candidate (Obama) leads the other (McCain ) BEYOND the margin or error, it is no longer a "statistical dead heat"… stop carrying McSame's water

I am not saying John Mccaine is unpatriotic. Senator Mccaine flew combat missions against communism in Viet Nam. Served five years as a P.O.W. God Bless him. How could he support an administration that sold out the U.S.A. to communisChina. This I would call UNPATRIOTIC…

McCain will lose the a bunch of Hillary's supporters are still whining about her loss some more of them will come around especially when they find out he knows nothing about our economy or how to fix it. He is too old to be president. Just because he was a war hero does not mean he is entitled to being president. I have yet to see where he is different from president Bush. If Obama would take Hillary as his vp he would win by a landslide. If Obama loses because of Hillary's supporters it will ruin the Clintons and they could hang up ever getting any support from an Obama supporter. We need a dem for president not some senile old man.

If Obama does turn out not to be all he says he is, is there a chance Hillary can be slipped in at the last second? Does the fact that she just 'suspended' her campaign mean we still might be able to get this right?

Annie   July 1st, 2008 8:56 pm ET

Yeah, well I guess it is time for Obama to select Clinton as his running mate if he expects to win this election. Otherwise, several Clinton supports, myself included, will vote for McCain.

harschwarz   July 1st, 2008 8:48 pm ET

The popular vote is not the best indicator for projecting a winner. It's the electoral college. And in that instance Obama is not only winning states that Kerry won in 2004(252),but he's ahead in the western states like NM & CO, as well as red states like Virginia, Ohio and Indiana in the east.

Phil   July 1st, 2008 8:40 pm ET

Now that is spin. One candidate consistently polls 5% better than the other and we are in a statistical dead heat.

Prof Steve, I am not a statistician, but I stayed at one of them express hotels last night. I understand margin of error in polls. However, when multiple polls show the exact same result, and are on the highest edge of that margin of error, the odds of that statistical margin of error actually coming into play go down, don't they? When you combine the results of those various polls, increasing the sample size, the margin of error also reduces, doesn't it?

I think it is now about four months.

How long has Barack been campaigning for the General Election?
Roughly three weeks?

CNN, don't you think the positions should be reversed? Let's just wait and see what the POLLS say closer to November.

If McCain led the poll by 5 points, would CNN report the result as a statistical tie? They never have in the past.
There is 3.5 point margin of error in this small poll.

Paul   July 1st, 2008 8:16 pm ET

This is all we get with our rock star? A statistical dead heat? All those Republicans voted and gave money to Obama so that the weakest person will be the Democratic nominee and now they are withdrawing their money and telling pollsters who they really support, McCain. African Americans and liberals once again fell for Republican dirty tricks!

I believe that people do not have a right to question your patriotism. This is one of the main reasons we are in the stupid war with IRAQ. The American people didn't do their duty and demand that the government be accountable to them. Instead American's stayed in their homes acting afraid and 4,000 plus Americans have lost their lives for what? 20,000 more Americans have lost their limbs and/or sustained grotesque injuries to their bodies; why? They lost their lives and their limbs in a misguided crusade of bringing liberty and freedom to another people in another land while the people of the USA hunkered down in their homes afraid to say this is wrong. Why? Because they didn't want their patriotism questioned… and they were afraid.

In this year with all the dissatisfaction in the current president and administration, shouldn't there be a landslide lead? It isn't because the democratic presumptive is such an unknown quantity. How can the voter make an informed decision on the issues when Sen. Obama's record is so lacking in history? We have only inference and empty words to go on. We have a great obligation to democracy and our nation to pick the best candidate for the job; Hillary is by far the better choice, but since the DNC foisted the lesser on us, the polls are now showing what the rest of America is musing. And, as more time goes by and Sen. Obama shows his weakness in experience the more musing will occur.
Patriotism, separation of church and state, economic uncertainty, 20 years member of a hate mongering - ridiculing church, immoral election practices, numerous "disappointing" relationships, a senatorial voting record of present, flip - flops…. These are facts that linger. The polls reflect the weakness in the candidate.

Brian,
I'm really tired of people like you saying that Obama is the Messiah. I am a Christian and this is very offensive. Obviously you know nothing of the Christian faith or you would know that we already have a Messiah. His name is Jesus.
You are free to take all the shots you want but to refer to Obama as the Messiah is beyond low.
You, and people like you, should be ashamed.

John Johnson   July 1st, 2008 7:37 pm ET

It is truly appalling your shameless pandering to McCain, an absolute abdication of these supposed conerstones of your profession - fairness, balance and truth. On each of the, you have failed miserably. Every headline, analysis and reporting is so skewed that it seems to go beyond a mere professional incompetence. It is looking like a well orchestrated campaign to ensure that by whatever means necessary that Obama's campaign is derailed. You continuously apply a higher standard to him while the old man can make the most ridiculous claim without as much as a comment. A good example is McCain extolling the virtues of the GI Bill that he firmly oppossed, yet you have deliberately failed to highlight the downright lies and hypocrisy. I am certain if Obama shows such reckless abandonment of the truth, ( especially as his mantra is straight talking) he would have been ripped apart as a liar. And the way you and the other friendly journalists pander to McCain at Press conferences is reminiscent of the press in zimbabwe. Are you all that insecure that him being friendly and a stand-up guy is enough for you all to forsake any semblance of professional integrity or is there a more sinister motive?

Obvious   July 1st, 2008 7:36 pm ET

Hopefully you'll start with marriage, something McCain didn't hold onto by his own accord. That's a nice value if there ever was one, especially if you look at the 10 commandments (#7 or 8 is where you should start reading).

NONPARTISAN view: Reagan rebuit what J. Carter destroyed, and as for G. W. Bush, while his Iraq War could remain questionable, he has been unlucky in terms of economy as the high gas price problem arises during his term. The high gas price is NOT his fault. It is the global phenomena based on "supplies-demands" caused mainly by China's and India's strong economic expansions. In Europian countries gas prices are MUCH MUCH higher than what we pay for here. What I disrespect of the Democratic Party candidate's campaign is HE makes voters believe that the high gas price caused by Bush and as if the gas price drops immediately after his inauguration. Some people tend to believe his words blindly and emotionally based on the current situation they face. While such reaction is understandable, emotional reaction will never lead you to the truce. I just want a honest person (regardless of Party) becomes our president, not the person who sells EMPTY PROMISES.

Making Sense   July 1st, 2008 7:27 pm ET

Anyone who is citing the Real Clear Politics average needs to know they included those wacky Newsweek and LA Times polls that have now been proven to be overly loaded with democrats which resulted in faulty polling. So of course Obama's averages are up there with those unrealistic 12 and 15 point bumps averaged in.

Obama polls the highest nationally with Clinton on the ticket. It will be historical and unbeatable.

Tari   July 1st, 2008 7:15 pm ET

I'm so sick of this patriotism crap every presidential election cycle. Both men are Americans and they love America. No one can doubt their commitment to this country and what it stands for. This CNN poll would of been actually relevant if it asked the following: Which candidate do you trust to repair the economy?

Obama would need to have a solid 15 point lead at this point in time in order to pull out a win in November, because as we get closer to November, Obama's lead will continue to shrink. This is terrible news for Obama. Obviously, the more people get to know Obama, the less they like him.

Michael   July 1st, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Obama is in trouble. The teeny-weeny lead he has is coming from big states like California. But it is not about the popular vote…it is about the Electoral College and that is where is has some big problems. In all those battlegrounds with "clinging" voters.

Marco Valdez   July 1st, 2008 7:03 pm ET

I guess it should not shock me how ignorant most Americans are when it comes to the issue of what being patriotic is. Wearing a pin, saying the pledge, flying a flag or singing the national anthem on a daily basis makes one no more patriotic than teaching a monkey how to salute. Outward symbolism is very easy for people to display since all thats required is for one to see another showing some sign supposedly related to what patriotism is. It is a lazy man's way of justifying himself to others without actually having to back up his opinions and what he stands for. The fact that some Americans still question Obama on this issue is a sad example of how stupid people really are. As for these self-righteous McCain and former disgruntled Hillary supporters, keep on in your dream world. The more you chuck out your filth each days shows how full of rage, anger and disillusionment you are. And watch out for calling Obama crooked or dirty; McCain has his own skeletons and has flipped more times than a circus acrobat. Check out his past statements regarding positions he holds now; ts not evolution of positions, its outright lying. As a current Arizona resident, believe me I know and have had a lot of exposure to John McCain and for the rest of you out htere in the country, not as many of us have a kind opinion of him as you are led to believe.

I don't get it. I am baffled as to why this race is so close statistically. McCain has abandoned his brand "independent thinker" or "maverick" which made him so appealling. Now he is doing just whatever the RNC says. That being said, why in the world are people voting for a man who will essentially KEEP the same aweful policies of the Bush Administration.

Walt   July 1st, 2008 6:25 pm ET

This has been a decisive week for many who have loyally supported Barack Obama during the primary season. During this week another Barrack Obama has shown his face. This Obama supports ultra conservative judges on the U.S. Supreme Court. This Obama has become wishy-washy on FISA and far less concerned about our Fourth Amendment rights. This Obama turns on General Wesley Clark who was correct in his statements to appease the McCain campaign. And now this new Obama is making nice with the Religious Right (Senator, you can change the name from Right to Left but…) and supporting religious based initiatives a la G.W. Bush ignoring the fact that many of these groups will discriminate in their hiring practices against those who don't subscribe to their belief system.

The new Obama apparently feels he doesn't need the Liberal wing of his party any more. But he is still depending on us to go to the polls in November and give him our vote as the better, at least on some issues, of two unsatisfactory candidates. Well we may have been tricked into doing just that but as the difference between Obama and McCain decrease so may our likelihood of bothering to vote at all…and then watch the polls.

chris in va   July 1st, 2008 6:12 pm ET

The U.S. is full of idiots and morons. We still have posters supporting Hillary almost a month after she conceeded, 15 % who think Obama is a Muslim the same time they complain of his 20 years in a church, others who think he is the second coming of Christ, and still others who tout the "experience" of someone who cannot explain correctly the religous demographics of Iraq, who sings diddys concerning bombing of another country, and admits the economy is not his strong suit. Geez!

Nicholas   July 1st, 2008 6:11 pm ET

separation of church and state, barack. everyone already knows that the federal money that goes to these faith-based prgrams ends up getting used for their anti-gay and pro-life initiatives.

technically, their not supposed to get involved woth politics, but these religious organizations do. leave it up to secular programs that won't discriminate against the people who wish to volunteer for them and the people who come to them for help.

You people should read your history about the forefathers of this country and how far this country as gotten away from what they wrote and said, You would be shocked !!!! Read and listen to what both Obama and Mccain have said and there actions in the past and now, then compare them to what forefathers said. Where headed down a slippery slope of socialism with Obama and the same old same with Mccain.
Be careful what you ask for, you might not get what you bargained from both of these candidates.
How about this for a CHANGE, read the constitution for once!!!

The undecided and independents will go with McCain in November. It just works that way. And by the way, keep religion out of government. That way true religion will rise up and show itself to all.

True religion is: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your strength and with all your might, and your neighbor as yourself.

Less government and more true religion.

Hey Patriot Woman:

I'm glad you get all giggly because you tell the pollsters that you're voting for Obama but really want McCain. I bet you feel that you're really skewing the numbers. Because I'm pretty sure that the pollsters' complicated formulas don't take such things into account. And I'm almost certain that there aren't Obama voters who are saying that they're going to vote McCain just so they can do what you think you're doing.

Your ploy is insignificant.

One poll showing a 5% lead with 900 polled isn't significant. A string of polls showing about that lead is significant, and that's what we've got. McCain is behind.

CitizenAJ   July 1st, 2008 5:58 pm ET

Polls, the snap shot in time that means very little especially this far away from election day. I am betting on the American people to not be fooled by the republican's propaganda this time and vote for their best interest and the interest of future generations. John McCain is not that best interest.

I supported John McCain for years, but he made a huge shift in 2004 after watching Bush/Cheney scare up votes. He aligned himself to the republican party and Bush policies. Any one who has followed him knows this. I am banking, willing to bet that John McCain will not be the next President. I have faith in the American people that they will vote for Senator Obama, a real candidate offering solutions for the future.

Tjaye in LA   July 1st, 2008 5:57 pm ET

Jazzy   July 1st, 2008 5:57 pm ET

Why isn't Obama's lead greater? If people are looking for a government that is different from the past 8 years, why aren't the polls showing it. Is it because of Senator Obama's race. Society says he is black because that's what history stated back in the slave days–one drop of blood and then you are black. He is a multiracial American. Why can't people see him as the candidate for change. He has two or more nations in him so he will work best for all people. Let's come together and put a stop to this Republican dominated country.

fairelection2008   July 1st, 2008 5:57 pm ET

Obama is trying to pander to the religious right wing with his latest proposal on federal funds for faith-based organizations. Obama knows that there is a reason for the separation of chuch and state - so why is he trying to blur the lines? I thought he supported the LGBT community and their equal rights under the law (according to one of his fundraising speeches)?? There is nothing that Obama won't say or do to try to get elected - what a phony!!

President McCain may we have the inaugural speech before we all go off on vacation?

Brian, NJ   July 1st, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Obama's is more ahead than this poll shows since it only polls voters with a land line and they tend to be older voters. The younger voters who will go overwhemingly for Obama all have cell-phones and are not captured in these polls.

And a 5 point win could turn into an electoral college landslide,

By the way Hill fans, she would only be ahead by a few points as well.

bob in L.A.   July 1st, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Obama is not perfect but what possible reason would anyone have for voting for McCain?
He has said he will continue many of the Bush fiancial programs. I guess if your wife is a multi-millioniare, the econmy is OK. He thinks this war, which is technically over basedon our reason for first going in, needs to keep going because its "winable" despite the fact that the enemy isn't just in Iraq, only our men and money are. He now thinks drilling off the coast is an answer to our energy crises, instead of pushing to do away with oil dependency and power our cars and homes with alternatives.
It seems the line from the song "everything old is new again" should be his campaign slogan.
More than half this country is complaining- how is he statistically tied with Obama?

Michael   July 1st, 2008 5:55 pm ET

This is all we get with our rock star? A statistical dead heat? If the lead is no 5% versus 3% the last time it was taken, doesn't it seem to be incrementally - GROWING?
Uh Patrick, I dont' think Kerry every was ahead in any poll.
By the way, the only ones that really matter right now are the state polls:
New Hampshire - Obama
Pennsylvania - Obama
Ohio - Obama
Iowa - Obama
New Mexico - Obama
Colorado - Obama
Virginia - McCain by less than one point

Here's a little secret McCain fans, if Obama keeps NH, Penn, Iowa, New Mexico and Colorado, he wins. But, to make it legit, he's working hard for Ohio and will ask Rendell to help solidify Pennsylvania.

It's elrly still, but I like where Obama is. Getting a 6-7% lead, especially in these 7 states would really put his candidacy in great shape. Here's to those who haven't gottne involved yet to get involved.
Donate time, money, etc. to the cause. I'm tired of the last 6 years of total Republican rule, and the last two years with President Bush now getting his veto pen a work out. I understand that the Baby Boomer generation is reluctant to change, but think about your kids - their kids. Do you want them paying $10 a gallon for gas? John McCain is the best republican they could've nominated and he's a much stronger opponent than one might think, even in this terrible political climate for republicans. We have to do all we can to get Senator Obama elected to the White House. We've got to keep the pressure on the republicans and force a debate about the issues instead of McCain's biography.

There should be a law that requires all voters to have in their possession a voter card that states who they voted for during an election.

That way, in case there is a draft, the government can't touch the families of those who did not vote for the person who decides to go to war, like Bush did and like McCain wants to continue.

If this law existed, McCain's percentage rate would be in the single digits.

McCain is doing amazingly well! Clark should be ashamed of his remarks. They were disgraceful. Newsweek 15 point lead was nothing
but a biased media stunt and not objective reporting. With all that McCain has to deal with in regards to the Republican Party and such low ratings on Bush, McCain is doing a very good job in showing how different he really is from Bush and how steady he is. Obama has "change" written all over him in his flip-flopping positions lately. It does not look very good for him. I think that the hype that was around him is steadily wearing thin and now, when we have to focus on substance, there is not much there.

There's a long way to go before November. CNN has to do something to keep us riveted. This race is not even in the back stretch. You wait until after the conventions, you haven't seen nothing yet. The "Swift Boat" operators got us Dems the first time because Kerry was to weak kneed to respond rapidly and dirty. Obama is a good man as long as you don't cross him, then he's deadly, he's proven that. Just let Mccains operators start some s–t, Obama is going to step back and call his operators in action. MoveOn and that crowd is going to blow McCain's -ss out of the water. I don't think he has any experience with the military side of things and we will lose our power and countries will laugh at us with how weak obama is going to make us as a super power. The News always says that the are Dems are not coming togther but Mccain was done with his Primary many months ago and the Base still won't come to him or donate. That is the real story the Media doesn't ask about. Maybe they are too much Republican themselves to tell the truth. The truth is there is a real surge behind Obama and the Rally's are only the tipping point. After the European trip and the first debate he will be even stronger and the voters will be ready to go out in full force. Too bad Repubs you scared us Dems into listening to real issues which you don't have. Just scare scare scare.. and he is his and that. Not what you can do to help this country get back right. 5% lead on average in ALL POLLS. It's the trend. I love how the title shows it as if it's tied yet EVERY poll shows a 5% Obama lead. When you break it down by electoral states needed to win Obama's in a very good position. It's all part of the media trying to make this closer than it really is. I know I live in Portland but I have literally not seen ONE McCain sign or bumper sticker. There is literally ZERO enthusiasm for him and I'm hearing this around the country. As far as the poll showing voters questioning Obama's "Patriotism." Hey… some people will never educate themselves. They choose to live in their closed minded world. It's disgusting. It's also disgusting how the media has helped to portray for these people the fact that Obama could be "Elitist." Isn't that HILLARIOUS while McCain OWNS SEVEN HOUSES!

Bill Brown   July 1st, 2008 5:24 pm ET

The question again….why isn't Barry Obama blowing McCain out of the water? Republicans are more unpopular than they've been since the Great Depression and yet Obama has a statistically insignifcant lead despite FREE news coverage for the extra two months it took him to put away the Hildabeast.

At this same point in 2000? Bush led Gore in good economic times by SIXTEEN points. A similar turnabout means McCain would win by 11.

It's something to think about.

Barack “I’ll take any position that gets me elected” Obama does it again with his latest faith based government program speech. Why is every vilified Bush program suddenly all right if run by democrats? His even goes further allowing religious based discrimination. Is this why all we get are puff pieces from his supporters in the media? I guess you really can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, I guess this election will prove if you can fool all of the people all of the time. Or at lease long enough to get elected!

AND REMEBER……..
A lot of DEMS never show up on GE, so McCain will win for sure……

FOUR MORE YEARS…….FOUR MORE YEARS…….
Yeah, thats what we have to be satisfied with.
Good luck all.

I keep reading all of these polls and wondering: who are they calling? Because they've never called our house……
Are they speaking to heads of household or whomever answers the phone? Students? Cell phones?

They haven't called any of my friends or my family.
And we're all voting OBAMA!

If Black can make the comment he did and people think its true why can't Gen Clark say something that is true. You are not qualified just because you were in a war. Does being in a hospital mean I'm qualified to be a doctor. Did John McCain stay in a holiday inn express before he decided to run?

JR, that wasn't the Pledge of allegiance that he didn't cover his heart for, it was the national anthem for which covering your heart isn't a prerequisite unless you happen to be a member of the military. It isn't even remotely tradition for civilians's to do so unless they happen to be running for office or playing baseball apparently.

As a statistician, I get annoyed at the constant mistatement of poll results.

BECAUSE the difference between Obama and McCain is within the margin of error, ONE CANNOT say that "Obama holds a slight advantage over McCain." By definition, there is no evidence of any advantage.

On the flipside, one CANNOT call this a statistical dead heat unless a statistical power analysis indicates that the lack of a difference is not likely due to the sample size.

The only thing these results allow you to say is that one cannot conclude with confidence that Obama (or McCain) has a lead. This is not the same as saying that they are tied.

So much crap is going to come out on both these candidates between now and November. Don't decide yet who to vote for so keep it civil for now. Sit back as though you're at a tennis match and prepare to swing your neck from side to side as each changes positions weekly, if not daily, as they both try to feel the pulse of the American public at that particulat moment.

You know, it's funny how many Americans question Obama's patriotism. A good number of them fly their flags three days out of the year - July 4th, Memorial Day, and Veteran's Day - unless they forgot to take them down and put them away. Yet, our young men and women are fighting and dying every single day of the year. At least Obama was moved to the point of recognizing that any person who puts his/her life on the line in defense of this country has earned at least the opportunity for a college education from the American people - which is mor than I can say for John McCain. As a veteran, that is very disappointing. John McCain thinks you should spend your lifetime being shot at, retire when you're too old/tired to go to school, and then use educational benefits - if you survive the bullets and IEDs. I think our kids deserve better than that from a man who claims to be a military leader and hero. I'm ashamed of him for opposing Webb's GI Bill. And, because of that, I fear that he would continue to erode veterans benefits if elected president. I just can't vote for him under those circumstances.

VETS for OBAMA/WEBB - 08
