Barack Obama and wife Michelle famously fist bumped when the Illinois senator captured the Democratic nomination.
Barack Obama and wife Michelle famously fist bumped when the Illinois senator captured the Democratic nomination.

(CNN) — Is Obama ditching his signature fist bump?

According to Tuesday's press pool report, the Illinois senator refused to bump fists with a boy as he was touring the Eastside Community Ministry in Zanesville, Ohio.

As the boy outstretched his first, Obama said no and added, "If I start that …"

His voice then trailed off.

The presumptive Democratic presidential candidate popularized the move last month when he and his wife Michelle bumped fists on the night he formally captured the party's presidential nomination.

Watch: The famous fist bump

Video of the duo fist bumping became widely popular on the internet, leading the Washington Post to declare it “the first bump heard ‘round the world.'”

CNN, I'm watching you………I saw you block my comments, yesterday; but let more divisive ones; be posted today. 'Fist bumping" isn't that big of a deal! America……….You shouldn't use this as strictly, a "black thing" phenomenon…………………………….

Were NOT your friends!   July 2nd, 2008 10:40 am ET

Retarded is what this "controversy" is, it must be a slow news day. If you go to ANY high school, ANY sporting event or ANY social interaction you will see people dong this. It's been a part of younger culture for 10 years. IM just not understanding how in ANY this could be conceived as inappropriate.

James Carville, how much money did you get from BO to respond to this article? Do you have to split your take with Hillary?

PEGGY   July 2nd, 2008 10:37 am ET

Alice in Florida and neVER Obama

You people must be real old, because if you notice the young peoplel of today do not shake hands, they just bumb each other.

Give me a break, It seems to me you old folks will NEVER get out of your old ways.

Obama is young and loving while you people are hateful and scary

Sue - FL   July 2nd, 2008 10:36 am ET

BO is much too good to fist bump the young boy and maybe have to take time with several people who wanted to touch the hem of his garment. BO doesn't even know who he is; how can any of you believe he can lead this country?

JenMonster   July 2nd, 2008 10:36 am ET

Fist bump!? Obama!? You must be kidding, we are suppose to be living in democratic society. Elect Obama and you may as well be casting a vote for Socialist government! Please get real people.

OMG, I also heard Obama stopped flossing his teeth with dental floss aka "terrorist beheading wire"…

And I heard people don't like Michelle Obama - oh no, maybe she won't be liked when she visits schools, etc in her non-policy making capacity as First Lady…….

Focus on the issues please!! If we want useless spin, lies and observations, we'll tune into Faux News (like the brainless Repubs do)!

No wonder we end up with guys like Bush!

I miss Hillary   July 2nd, 2008 10:33 am ET

The first fist bump with Michelle was a cute moment but put it away now. It's not presidential.

AgathaX   July 2nd, 2008 10:28 am ET

So what would the talk have been if Michelle and Barack had greeted one another on stage with a nice professional handshake? This is all context. The playful way in which you greet your husband or wife, or even your own child, is not appropriate for a presidential candidate to greet someone–particularly a child– on the campaign trail. Fortunately, Obama knows this.

Good to see the media on top of the important issues and the malcontents out for a rant.

Wonder Twins, Activate!

America for Obama   July 2nd, 2008 10:27 am ET

CNN you are pathetic. With anchors like Glenn Beck and Anderson Cooper it's a wonder how CNN stays in business. Anderson is a high school girl's volleyball coach at best and Glenn Beck couldn't get a job selling ice cream because of his sex offender status. Please, when CNN posts stories like this they make FOX NEWS look respectible, which is outrageously pathetic. This is exactly the reason why I only watch MSNBC or C-SPAN, because CNN has become FOX NEWS's little red headed side kick.

MD FOR OBAMA   July 2nd, 2008 10:26 am ET

"sexism favoritism reverse racism" & "Surge"

Shut up! Your candidate lost because she and her campaign got their a@#es handed to them in Iowa, then trounced bigtime in 12 straight primaries by the better candidate, then changed their strategy to "get tough" and appear manly, then bancrupted their campaign, now you're claiming victim status hiding under sexism. Read a phucking news paper please…and vote for McTeleprompter if you feel that's going to make America stronger. I'm tired of you whiners anyway! Begone. The Keating Five needs you (ya retards!)

What does this clown believe in? No one knows, apparantly not even Obama.

Let's see here…the economy stinks, gas and oil are at record highs. The housing market is in crisis and the Taliban is back. Does the right wing have anything better to do than talk about a fist bump? Is one supposed to laugh or cry? Wait a minute…if i cry does that mean i support the terrorists?

Codan   July 2nd, 2008 10:21 am ET

This "ticker" is a joke. All the time you waste discussing these non-issues. Fist-bumps/ flag-pins / what some old general said. CNN–you are dumbing down the common person. Of course you won't report on Carl Linder Jr. and his ties to the Colombian terrorist group AUC, and how Mr. Linder raised 2 million dollars for John McCain last week, because this is real news. This is the news people need splashed on your homepage. Why don't you start doing your job and report the news, or just rename yourself something like "the Rag" or "the Trashcan"
Of course, I have no hope of this post making past your censors.

steve dillon   July 2nd, 2008 10:21 am ET

there is nothing misleading about a fist pump or closed high five. it is a recognition between people 'EVERYTHING IS GOOD' whether it be about sports, polotics or anything else in general. the reaction by the woman commentator on the fist pump between barack & michelle obama was one of stupidity and ignorance. the fist pump is used every day in business, sports or any general environment of people.

i would urge barack obama to continue using the fist pump-it is natural to him as it is to millions of other people from all walks of life.

Anonymous   July 2nd, 2008 10:20 am ET

This happens every election cycle — the candidate moves far to the left (or right) during the primaries and then has to move to the center during the generals in order to get elected. Call it pandering, call it what you will — but the reality is that in order for anyone in this country to get a enough electoral votes in a Presidential election in this country, they have to espouse some pretty centrist views. It's two party politics at work.

I'm just crossing my fingers that Obama has moved toward the center for the primaries and then once in office will move back towards the left. In the meantime, the most important thing that this country needs is right now is some inspiration and unity — and Obama is the man for that.

jpc   July 2nd, 2008 10:20 am ET

The "bump" is stupid and pretentious. Obama is smart to stop doing it.

CTP   July 2nd, 2008 10:19 am ET

YES WE WILL, BARACK OBAMA!!! And all of you naive people who are talking about all this pandering…please remember that the Dems haven't had the White House in quite a long time because there are a lot of stupid people in this country to which we must pander. We're gonna have to pander a little bit in order to get into office - then we can make changes. Think about this rationally.

YES WE WILL!!!

LAM   July 2nd, 2008 10:19 am ET

This is sad: watch Obama lose this election big time. It may look like a non-issue, but it says a lot about character. Where is Obama's backbone? He also should have defended General Clark's comments, which were very clear re McCain. These actions are painting him as a weak, flip-flop candidate. Wake the hell up, Obama! Stand by some convictions!

PUMA = NUTS   July 2nd, 2008 10:19 am ET

So let me get this straight? There is an ever increasing gas price, there are people dying in hospital emergency waiting rooms on the floor, there are people getting run over by bulldozers in Israel… and the best CNN's political ticker could come up with is the fact that Obama didn't fist bump (or whatever its called)? Way to go CNN you have finally proven that the MSM is a joke and that we Americans do not care in general about important issues. People care about flag pins. Stick to the important stuff!

Rhiannon Brown   July 2nd, 2008 10:18 am ET

Can we perhaps report on real issues instead of this minutiae? Jeez louise. I can't imagine something this inane being reported on in Europe.

Dave   July 2nd, 2008 10:17 am ET

The "Alice in Florida"s of the world are so transparent…they throw tantrums about inconsequential things like "fist taps," then accuse the same candidate of being a chameleon when he reacts to their response. Who do they think they're fooling? If Barack Obama saved a baby from a burning building these people would still find a way to criticize him for it.

Will   July 2nd, 2008 10:15 am ET

Some people just can't identify why they don't like him….so they always come up with some off the wall excuse with no evidence just unknown sources that have been proven incorrect.

He's a secret radical terrorist.
A secrete radical raciest.
He's a secrete radical fundamental Christian.

PLEASE PEOPLE. So basically if I use the internet and say that McCain is from the planet Zomburg where lizard people live and are attempting to take over the planet, people would probably believe it?

katey smith   July 2nd, 2008 10:15 am ET

CTP   July 2nd, 2008 10:15 am ET

"Alice in Florida" is just the sort of racist fascist conservative with whom you must bump fists - she's clearly a dirty racist, don't want to touch the palm of her hand. Yuck.

Amy   July 2nd, 2008 10:14 am ET

Please report something with substance. The fist bump is a hip-hop generation thing. It amazes me that he has to be so careful so that Old, outdated and "Ultra Conservatives" aren't scared to death.

This is so stupid, teh "Ultra Conservatives" and Crazy Right will read anything negative into whatever he says or does. It really makes people numb to there ignorant rants….Even my 10 year old mocks Hannity.,,, with his holier than thou comment "The unrepentive Terrorist William Ayers".

Barack is going to be the next president, because the US and entire world is tired of old stuff shirts trying to keep the wolrd stuck in the past.

Get real people. First this is such a non story that it shouldn't be on here, but in reality it didn't say anything about him "abandoning" the fist bump or being told to stop doing it. He was in the company of a bunch of kids and didn't want to get stuck having to do it reapeatedly for each and every one of them. Try actually reading a story before you post ridiculous comments.

Jon   July 2nd, 2008 10:12 am ET

Just thinking   July 2nd, 2008 10:10 am ET

I figure the rest of his sentance might well have been…..

I'll have to do it with everyone as I walk past this crowd, and then my fist will hurt. Try bumping your own 2 fists together 5 times. THEN, add in that its gonna be another person whose speed you cannot control - and who might have a big ring or whatever.

I agree it stinks to have to leave the kid hanging. BUT, I really don't think it would work well to bump fists into a crowd instead of offer out an open hand for a handshake or quick grasp.

SDunn   July 2nd, 2008 10:09 am ET

CNN how about reporting REAL NEWS!!!! For example the fact that one of McCain's financial backers is linked to financing a terrorist group! How about digging into McCain's background like you've been doing with Obama and watching his every move just like you've been doing with Obama. How about being real journalists!!! How about non-biased reporting and treating each candidate equally instead of being biased towards McCain and not reporting his gaffes???? How about earning your paychecks by doing your JOB!

Tammy - KCMO   July 2nd, 2008 10:08 am ET

Obama or WWW111. Seems simple to me.

Jean   July 2nd, 2008 10:08 am ET

I don't think he is ditching the fist bump as the article said:
As the boy outstretched his first, Obama said no and added, "If I start that …"
He has said the same or similar about signing autographs or giving hugs. Maybe he was in a hurry -he does draw big crowds.
From these posts though, some might think CNN posted this "story" to give racists like Alice in Florida a chance to call the future President derogatory names.

Ariana   July 2nd, 2008 10:07 am ET

To Mendemoi: Your post does not make any sense. Flip-flopping is a part of politics. Please tell me how many presidents actually keep their promises. Bush promised to bring integrity back to washington. If integrity means lying to the public about a war then he as done it. His top aide might end up in prison infact he as already had to commute a sentence of one of his people. You say that dems are falling for this stuff. God, most of you fellas are so… naive.

Like this one dude(tte) who likes to think that since Barack refused the fist bump, he is doing what is politically beneficial.

Or another one saying Barack is too inexperienced and he is just trying to act presidential.

I am not even American, but I still follow this race quite closely.

The comments from some of you people are just so full of hate that your judgment seems severely impaired.

The comments are fun to read, though.

Kay   July 2nd, 2008 10:04 am ET

Poor little kid. That could have been a memory he'd talk about to his grandkids, but now he just has to tell them that Obama was so controlled by his handlers, he couldn't do one little gesture to make a child's day. That's far less presidential to me. Someone who disappoints his public and lets handlers tell him what to do constantly.

I think the big thing for some Americans is that Obama is smarter than they are. He and his wife attended the best colleges, they are well educated, determined and black.. and that scares many PEOPLE…………. whay would you want a president that isn't smarter than a fifth grader, to make yourself feel better……….

Those that voted Bush in office should not complain about gas prices, he was an oil man before he was president and will be after he is president………. I do not think its a mistake that gas prices are going up as he is going out…….. I think it's his retirment plan that he is thinking of not you and me.
SO I GUESS MY BIG QUESTION IS DO YOU REALLY THINK A 76YEAR OLD MAN HAS YOU, YOUR KIDS AND COMMUNITY IN MIND????????????

aS AN AFRICAN AMERICAN I KNOW HE DOES NOT UNDERSTAND THE ISSUES THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO ME…..i MEAN THE MAN VOTED AGAINST A KING HOLIDAY IN HIS STATE, AND HAD THE NERVE TO SHOW UP AT A KING EVENT IN ALABAMA TO APOLOGIZE……… INCONSIDERATE, IGNORANT, RACIST………..

The sad thing is the rest of us wouldn't really care about the stupid decisions you make if it didn't affect everyone else. It's a pity the rest of the world didn't get to vote in your election because if we did probably Mikey Mouse would be the President and the economy would be in a much better condition.

You guys would be stupid to put the same party in power again, but then again you DID put that Moron back in as president for a second term…

"Black people are just SO funny! Lookatem! Lookatemthere! He done jabbed that there boy's fist with his own fist! Must be how they say howdy! Whoo doggy!"

I hope Obama continues to take the higher road by not allowing himself to get bogged down in the scum-ridden swamp that is CNN.

sim   July 2nd, 2008 9:57 am ET

You want for more of the last eight? Forget "the bump," nitwits. If Obama changed his mind everyday on every issue until election day, he still couldn't complete with McCain on that score. Johnny McPain should be sitting in a Clearwater resthome, complaining about the creamed corn and talking to the television.

Craig   July 2nd, 2008 9:55 am ET

I too will vote for McCain because I would love to see him finish us off. George Carlin was right Ameicans are not given enough credit for being stupid.

To all the extra stupid Hillary supporters that are voting for McCain, I invite you people to research Bill Clinton's policies and Presidency. Thats if you guys are capable of research. The policies that made the Clinton years prosperous are the same ploicies that Obama is proposing. So vote McCain if you want the next eight years to be like the previous.

Jennifer   July 2nd, 2008 9:55 am ET

Senator Obama is extremely arrogant. Although, this entire story is pretty lame. He didn't make up the "bump." Of all this country has to focus on, you, CNN focus on a personal gesture between a man and his wife and make it into something spectacular. My boyfriend and I do that all the time. My brother and I have a "fist bump" similar to that too. So come on and give us REAL news.

Mervin   July 2nd, 2008 9:55 am ET

Not Relevant whatsoever!

bill in pa   July 2nd, 2008 9:55 am ET

Why don't CNN and the rest of the news media try to focus on the ISSUES instead of this type of nonsense. Nobody would even know about it if you jerks in the media wouldn't get your panties in a wad over it.

Gas, building materials, food and the rest of the necessities of life are doubling in price almost every year. Americans are struggling to stay afloat and the news media is concerned about a fist bump?

Where is Walter Cronkite when you need him?

Dianne   July 2nd, 2008 9:55 am ET

That whole fist bumping thing reminds be of Zan and Jane, the Wonder Twins from the old Superfriends cartoon that used to be on Saturday mornings. It's always been a pretty rediculous way of saying 'hello' or 'way to go' or whatever else it means these days. Makes sense that someone like Obama would use something so lame.

And BTW, Howie Mandel may use the fist bump on Deal or No Deal, but it's because he's a huge germaphobe. Things like shaking hands and hugging make him wig out.

JWM   July 2nd, 2008 9:55 am ET

"Fox news said the fist bump was a terrorist gesture"
Actually, no, they repeated the words of someone else who postulated that. Get your facts straight instead of repeating hysterical rumor.

As for the "white enough" comment by someone comfortable with their own racism:
The fist bump has been used for quite a while by people of all races. Just because you were not aware of it does not mean it was an exclusionary racial thing. Otherwise, Steve Spurrier has been black for a while and just not known it or shown it.

Sungu   July 2nd, 2008 9:54 am ET

Sean   July 2nd, 2008 9:54 am ET

Paula, this is a campaign for the Presidency of the United States of Amercia of course Obama has to prove himself. Did Obama and his supporters really think that he could just repeat his catchy slogans over and over and no one would question him at all about the issues or his recor?.

Sad in Ohio   July 2nd, 2008 9:54 am ET

Wow - You people are simple. We are voting for a President and somehow the conversation is about what the press has termed "fist bumping" b/c obviously no one ever did it before. Let's make up other equally important and relevant headlines:

1) Barack Obama has trouble moving bowels - will he have similar trouble moving nation?

2) Barack Obama baby kissing cause for concern?

3) Is Michelle Obama's right hand wave technique a sign to the GOP?

Patrick   July 2nd, 2008 9:54 am ET

"WE lifelong democrats"

If you don't vote for him… frankly you never were a democrat… and I don't particularly want you in my party anyway. Most likely you were always a Bush apologist.

Susi   July 2nd, 2008 9:53 am ET

The First Bump? Seriously? I mean really…..is every move this man does going to be scrutinized like some new found cell or galaxy? That was a private moment between him and his wife despite the fact that it was in a hugely public forum. Anyone ever heard of the high 5? That 'bump'…consider it a first cousin.

So what's next………OMG! Barak Obama scratched his nose with his left hand…….quick! That must mean he's satanic! Because everyone knows anything done with the left hand……..

The first bump….hahahaha.

Raoul   July 2nd, 2008 9:52 am ET

What's next CNN? "Obama Eats Funnel Cake At County Fair"?

Dem in CA   July 2nd, 2008 9:52 am ET

Obama probably said this while laughing–this whole thing is such a joke.

The fact that you report this trivia as news shows he is probably wise to avoid fist-bumping, yet now you make NOT fist-bumping a story?

You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Can we please have some real news?

Lester from Huntsville, Alabama   July 2nd, 2008 9:50 am ET

Mr. Obama is not "changing" by not "fist bumping" the young boy. He stated that "I don't want to start….." and then according to the article trailed off and started talking about something else. I fist bump with my wife and dear friends but not with people I really don't know and lets face it….the right wing media may be inclined to try and convince those ignorant among us that this is a terroist gesture. Mr. Obama is focusing on trying to win the presidency and I'm sure doesn't want to be distracted by having to constantly defend non-issues. Why doesn't the media scrutinize every little gesture of John McCain? Why does the first black candidate that actually won the nomination have to explain a "fist bump"? Why is he being so demonized? Is it because he's black? Is it legitimate that I ask such a question? Where is all this good press coverage that fox news continues to say Barrack Obama receives while by and large that cheer John McCain?

STILL FOR HILL   July 2nd, 2008 9:49 am ET

I personally would like to thank all the students, blacks, and latte liberals for delivering our democratic nominee for the DNC to select. I guess all those college educated people figured out that they can't buy common sense at the university.

This college educated individual learned common sense in a small town and knew all along that Hillary Clinton should have been our nominee.

Still for Hill, but voting for a patriot, John McCain.

5millers   July 2nd, 2008 9:49 am ET

CNN, you are sad and pathetic and it's very upsetting that you would stoop to such reporting. What is this even news.

If a person would or would not vote for a candidate because he or she did or did not do a "fist bump," then our country is in even more trouble than I realized. This campaign will come down to three things RACE (first and foremost), RELIGION, and the ISSUES, not a "fist bump."

I agree. Ditch it. It is stupid and a turn off to older voters.

Jon G.   July 2nd, 2008 9:44 am ET

Only the media is making an issue out of this. People don't care and probably wouldn't have even noticed. I'm beginning to wonder whether high schooler paper editors are running the media.

David   July 2nd, 2008 9:43 am ET

The more I see "news" like this being reported, and the comments in response to such a non-event as if it were as significant as a world war the more I realize democracy no longer works in this country. Our voters react emotionally and are easily led. Such a shame.

JCB   July 2nd, 2008 9:42 am ET

Obama is just an image — we have not seen the real man yet. Or, maybe he is just shallow. He sure does not seem to have much substance. That is why he constantly has to work on polishing his image and changing himself to fit in with the public that is present at every stop. He just needs to name Hillary as his VP and get on with it. She is solid, and she doesn't have to shape shift.

Bob   July 2nd, 2008 9:42 am ET

Why is this news worthy CNN? This is just another distraction piece that you in the MSM want to use to keep from talking about high gas and food prices, the war in Iraq, mortgage crisis, global warming, floods in the Midwest, etc. All of these would be better suited and what you should be talking about. Next it will be who's on American Idol.

Mary   July 2nd, 2008 9:41 am ET

Many of the comments here sadden me as much as the acts of politicians. Come on people. Exercise some discipline in your speech.

STILL FOR HILL   July 2nd, 2008 9:36 am ET

Is it too late for Hillary to get back in this race? Hillary, help!!!!

The American Idol voters delivered our nominee, Obama, and I guess we are stuck with him…

If only they would have voted for the candidate with experience, brains, common sense, real policies that she could explain.

Now we are stuck with a flip -lopper who is wanting to give federal funds to churches (expanding a Bush policy to pander to evangelicals). Blah..

I'm voting for someone who loves this country with all their heart… I voting for John McCain!

saga4obama   July 2nd, 2008 9:36 am ET

DO NOT BE FOOLED AMERICA….
although Obama has and will raise more money that McCain from 1.8 million everyday Americans, dont think for one second think John McCain does not have his big oil people working for him….i would not be surprised if some of the people who post ANTI OBAMA bs on this site are not the American public but apart of the GOP, BUSH and MCCCAIN machine:
i dare you to go to sites like :
dumpmccain.com
realmccain.com
John McCain is more of a criminal than a hero…

who are you PUMA,NOBAMA,NEVEROBAMA? are you real people or one of the lobbyist McCain took $1,069,854.00 from…uh?

McCain ad visors:WAYNE BURGESON [lobbyist Chevron], ERIC BURGESON [lobbyist forBP], NANCY PFOTENHAUER [ LOBBIET FOR KOCH INDUSTRIES] AND OF COURCE HIS WAR WOULD BE GOOD MINION AND TOP ADVISOR CHARLIE BLACK [LOBBIEST FOR OPC]…McCain is big interest in BIG OIL…
why wont Mr. Transparent release his military record? well, if my "show boating"and bad temper were the cause of 167 crewmen's death i would not release them either…MCCAIN HAS SOMETHING TO HIDE…A LOT TO HIDE. ask him about "wet starting" his plane…thats hoe those 167 men died. and btw solitary confinement is not being help up in a hotel with 2 hookers McCain…i shutter to think how you have disgraced our Nation..giving up military information, wet starting your plane killing 167 men, NO WONDER YOU WHERE SO UPSET ABOUT CLARK…just another smoke screen so Americas wont look deeper…but we are and we will…SKELETONS WILL FALL FROM THE MCCAIN CLOSET!!!!

no dignity for presidential material in this sort of flip gesture.

Robin   July 2nd, 2008 9:34 am ET

The "Real" issue here is not the stupid "fist bump", what really bothers those who are offended by it is the color of this man's skin. Not his fist bump, not his politics, not his religion. It is the color of his skin and the REAL content of his character that has these people frightened and threatened!

If not Hillary....then McCain   July 2nd, 2008 9:34 am ET

Once again, he stands by nothing he does! What a pathetic excuse for a candidate for POTUS

TRUTH   July 2nd, 2008 9:33 am ET

"Another attempt to make BO appear "presidential." Too bad he didn't know enough to knock it off on his own, but that's why he and Michelle have a crew of "handlers." Boy, do they need handlers!"

I see where you are coming from, but it's not funny. In your statment you are trying to reduce the Obama's to animals. How sad. It's showing you and should put it away now so the rest of the REAL DEMOCRATS can fix the country.

RT   July 2nd, 2008 9:32 am ET

This is absolutely the stupidest story CNN has ever posted. CNN is so out of touch thinking that this thing belongs to Obama. People I know have been doing it for YEARS and we call its "pounds" and not a "fist bump". Get in touch and get caught up CNN.

Me   July 2nd, 2008 9:32 am ET

He can't "bump" with just anybody.

My thinking is then that would take away from the real meaning of the one he shared with Michelle.

None of us will ever know what the true meaning of that was but you can bet his refusal to do it with anyone else signals that it didn't mean what he tried to get us to believe it meant.

Another Obama mystery! I am starting to not like this guy so much.

Chipster   July 2nd, 2008 9:31 am ET

Geez, I think the media has gone completely nuts - all of them. There is REAL news out there! Why isn't someone reporting it?

24 hours a day, we have cable news and yet so much is being done that will impact our lives for years or even decades without ever being reported or maybe a brief mention. Nothing gets in-depth coverage except this sort of garbage. How many of you know that the Bush Administration and North Korea agreed on a treaty, strangely similar to the one the Clinton administration made and Bush broke, in late 2007? It made the news for about 3 seconds.

You can bet Brad and Angelina's twins will be covered ad-nauseum!

David   July 2nd, 2008 9:30 am ET

He nixed it because it makes him seem TOO black. As if Dr. Wright hasn't accomplished that fact already.

John in Ohio   July 2nd, 2008 9:30 am ET

Great, yet another Democrat candidate who fights on the defensive.

Who cares?   July 2nd, 2008 9:29 am ET

Honestly, I don't care whether Obama fist bumps or not. All of the STUPID hype made of this by the right wing is just scare tactic racism. Whathisname on FOX (oops, NeoconFox) News calls it a terrorist bump. Hmm, so I guess Miley Cyrus is a terrorist, too. Scare tactics and nothing else. My six year old daughter loves to do this with me…I guess we're terrorists, too. And just so you know, I'm from Central Iowa, I'm white, and I will be voting for McCain. But I vote on issues, NOT stupid things like this. This is what is wrong with the US. My only disappointment is that McCain didn't step in and say knock it off.

CitizenAJ   July 2nd, 2008 9:29 am ET

Some of the stories that news agencies publish just floor me. Is this news to report? I guess so because quite a few of us read it and left comments. Ridiculous article. Wow, I am done reading CNN for the day.

Nikki, Florida   July 2nd, 2008 9:28 am ET

It's unfortunate how the ridiculousness of the press (and especially fox news) can affect something like this.

Debbie,Ewing,Nj   July 2nd, 2008 9:27 am ET

The media makes a big deal about everything. In the African American community this is no big deal. We all do it. Leave it to the media to try to make something out of it. Its just what we do to say I'm with you, ok, good job.

Obama-Junkie, IL   July 2nd, 2008 9:27 am ET

Obama is right to not get caught up in public fist-bumping. Fist-bumping is usually done in the sports arena after a good play is done. I've seen some basketball players and golfers do it. It was "cute" when Michelle did it with her husband, but not when everyone else wants to do it.

Slow news day for CNN Politics. Instead of focusing on the national issues, CNN Politics is happy to engage is "pop culture" issues.

Give me a break.

It's sad really. I like Obama but he is acting more and more like a politician. Some advisor must have told him to stop doing the fist bump thing because of the whole ridiculous "terrorist fist jab" remark put out by FAUX news aka FOX. It seems like every week Obama loses his non-politian charma that got him the democratic nomination.

Fitz   July 2nd, 2008 9:21 am ET

Tennessee Tuxedo, you hit the nail right on the head. Everything Obama does is a big deal to CNN and it needs to be discussed at length daily for weeks upon end. One of his guys gets a mortagae at a good price and it's an everyday discussion. McCain's people lobby for terrorist organizations and recently it was found one actually made payments to the same group the US lists as a terrorist organization and do you hear about it here? NO

They talked about Michelle Obama and the "patriotic issue for how long. What she said and how it causes problems for Obama.

Did they ever show the video of McCain saying the same thing?

But a fist jab is a big deal because Obama did it. Hey G.W. Bush just did it, I saw the pic, why don't they report on that here too

What we people of color are taught is that, no matter what you do, you will always have to do it twice as good just to be considered equal.

Good gosh, get real. "Wah wah, she has a big butt throw her under the bus." THIS is the type of nonsense that the Obama-haters complain about? The size of Michelle's butt? Way to go, brainiac!

Why waste time on this nonsense? We are in serious trouble in this country and need a strong individual to lead us in the next 8 years. Please concentrate on the issues and not this downright "silly" stuff. It is indeed unfortunate that Obama cannot express himself without controversy. People who dislike him will jump on anything to disrespect him. No matter what the issue or who supports Obama, those who hate him will continue to hate him and will not change their minds. Conversely, those who like him will continue to do so, and won't change their minds, either. So its a stalemate. Can we move on and not cover these foolish "stories" so the candidates can be themselves without pretense? Go Obama!!!

Julianna   July 2nd, 2008 9:11 am ET

I suspect this is not at all what it seems. How many children were there? He probably meant that if he fist bumped this little boy he would have to do it with every single child there….
I seriously doubt this is any more than that.
I just wonder why on earth is this news???
I think CNN is becoming as bad as Faux News.

Cheryl   July 2nd, 2008 9:10 am ET

My gosh, Don't we have more pressing issues to think about? I am taken back by what topics seem to be the most noteworthy, while others of a more serious nature are ignored. Can you spell PRIORITIES…….

RH   July 2nd, 2008 9:08 am ET

Obama thought it was a bad idea from the very beginning. The footage clearly shows his reluctance to 'bump fists' at his wife's suggestion. I certainly understand his hesitation - it is a somewhat sophomoric gesture. Being that it has reached the level it has in the public consciousness, however, with some even ascribing 'signature' status to 'Obama's' fist bump, he probably ought to roll with it lest he risk the seemingly obligatory accusation of compromising his character for the sake of appearances. In fairness, I would challenge anyone who would level such charges against Obama to honestly deny that they themselves engage in such behaviour on a regular basis to benefit their social, business, or family relationships, or, at the very least, to accompany their admonishments with some substantive argument against his candidacy.

Does anybody see something a little wrong about any man who has no clear ideology or belief system where he will draw a line and actually state: " here is where I stand and I won't be swayed".

Just another desperate ploy for republicans to use since they have nothing promising to offer from thier side.

dont be bitter   July 2nd, 2008 8:54 am ET

I do not understand why Hillary supporters are so bitter, I mean if you are a serious voter you should pay attention to your candidates stand on the core issues; no not that she is a female making history or that he is a black man (he is as much white as he is black by the way).
If you truly paid attention to what the candidates are saying, what you would do is vote for the candidate whose stance best resembles your original choice, if you decide to throw your all important vote away, then you never really paid attention to the issues and should educate yourself a little more. The differences between John McCain and both democratic hopefuls are like night and day, so I do not see how after Hillary lost, her camp is rallying behind McCain. I vote issues, and I must honestly say of the 2 candidates currently running for office, the one I tend to agree with the most is Barack Hussein Obama. That is not saying I have anything against McCain, because to me politics is not about making best friends but should be about the one who can steer this country in (what I believe is) the right direction. That is why I have the right to vote, to express my desire that the next person in office will not run me ragged as the current administration has; so I can travel abroad without hearing a whole bunch of anti American sentiments.
If you vote for someone who does not mirror what you believe, you have no one else but yourself to blame if the country takes a path that you are not in agreement with, so while you line up to pay for your $15 gas, think back to when you wanted to vote on principle, rather than the issues, think back to when you where bitter because you felt that Hillary was not treated fairly (when we know that both camps slung mud). Take heed, vote along the issues you hold dearest to your heart so you can hold your head high regardless of the result of the election, or do not and let some deep seeded (or planted) doubt cloud your mind/heart on what is really going on in this country these days, let it not be said that you where not warned.
P.S. All politicians are inherently lairs, it is what they are paid to do, they pander, if they did not they would not get elected; you have to pray and hope that of the choices you have, one most closely resembles what you would do if in office, my two cents.

Another do as I say Liberal, that's all…

On average, women working in Obama's Senate office were paid at least $6,000 below the average man working for the Illinois senator. That's according to data calculated from the Report of the Secretary of the Senate, which covered the six-month period ending Sept. 30, 2007. Of the five people in Obama's Senate office who were paid $100,000 or more on an annual basis, only one — Obama's administrative manager — was a woman.

The average pay for the 33 men on Obama's staff (who earned more than $23,000, the lowest annual salary paid for non-intern employees) was $59,207. The average pay for the 31 women on Obama's staff who earned more than $23,000 per year was $48,729.91. (The average pay for all 36 male employees on Obama's staff was $55,962; and the average pay for all 31 female employees was $48,729. The report indicated that Obama had only one paid intern during the period, who was a male.)

McCain, an Arizona senator, employed a total of 69 people during the reporting period ending in the fall of 2007, but 23 of them were interns. Of his non-intern employees, 30 were women and 16 were men. After excluding interns, the average pay for the 30 women on McCain's staff was $59,104.51. The 16 non-intern males in McCain's office, by comparison, were paid an average of $56,628.83.

Spell check clearly working, word checker is clearly not.

First is not the same as Fist. One is an ordinal number, the other a position the hand is in when the fingers are contracted.

Does anyone read this stuff before you publish it????

COME ON PEOPLE!!!!! You have the first candidate ever to be the coolest person around. No more old guys. He has the coolest wife and they love each other and have the best rapport on stage. Stop with the stooooopid views on what the bump means. Move into the new century and elect Obama. Hey we'll vote for him as Prime Minister of Canada if you don't vote him President. We are a bit more open minded in Canada.

This is what he has going for him, give me a break, a HUGE break. He is not the one to lead this country and these kind of articles prove that point. It is all about personality and his rock star image, nothing substantial. The one thought I keep going back to is the no backbone people who elected Bush TWICE are now running behind Obama like he is the saviour of the country. What is that sayin
