Poll shows Connecticut is Obama country

CNN's Electoral map breakdown.

CNN's Electoral map breakdown.

(CNN) - John McCain has the backing of Connecticut's Democratic-turned-Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman, but a new poll out Wednesday shows the state is decidedly Obama country.

According to a new poll from Quinnipiac University, Barack Obama is leading McCain in the state by more than 20 points, 56 percent to 35 percent. Much of that lead stems from the Illinois senator's 16 point advantage among independent voters in the state. He also pulls in 16 percent of Republicans there.

Connecticut has long tilted Democratic in presidential elections, and recent Republican White House hopefuls have often spent few resources there. It voted for John Kerry in 2004 by a margin of 10 points, and for Al Gore in 2000 by a 16 point margin. CNN considers the state's seven electoral votes safely in Obama's column.

The poll also provides further evidence that Lieberman, who bucked his former party late last year by endorsing McCain, holds little sway with voters in his home state when it comes to the presidential election. Even if McCain chose Lieberman as his No. 2, a prospect that most political observers agree is highly unlikely, only 14 percent of Connecticut voters said they would be more likely to vote for the Republican ticket.

Lieberman also appears to be hurting his own approval rating in Connecticut as he increasingly becomes one of McCain's most visible surrogates on the campaign trail.

Watch: Lieberman touts McCain

In a Quinnipiac poll released earlier this week, the Connecticut senator's job approval rating stood at 45 percent, the first time his it has dipped below the 50 percent line in that survey. Sixty-two percent of Connecticut Democrats now hold a negative view of their party’s Democratic vice presidential candidate.

Good. Even though the true poll is Nov 4, I want to see McCain sweat. Now if the MSM would do its job by reportin on McCain's backer's firms ties to U.S. designated Colombian terrorists, I might smile more. No wonder he's down there now.

When you buy bad food off the shelf, you don't reward the company that made the food with a repeat purchase. The Republican Party has messed the country up. Its time for Democrats 'to take over and return the economy to the prosperous state it was when Bill Clinton was president.

He went from Dem VP to supporting a Republican because of the war in Iraq for Israel. The only countires to benefit from our invasion of Iraq: Iran and Israel. Now he wants us to go after Iran so we can scrafice more US troop for non-existent WMD threats.

Is anyone really surprised by this news? If the poll had shown Obama having a 20 point lead in Texas then it would be surprising. A 20 point lead in state that historically votes democrat? Big deal.

And to the genius above who is proclaiming a 16 percent lead among republicans in CT...try reading. Obama is getting support from 16 percent of republicans polled....quite a difference.

  9. Lieberman is a TRADER

Between their former CROOK Governor and Lieberman the TRADER, I have lost a great deal of respect for Connecticut.

I didn't like Lieberman in 2000 and I despise him now. I have zero respect for this man who turns his back on the party which would have put him in the White House. He was Gore's biggest mistake.

Regardless .... this will be his last term in office.

I'm sick and tired of reading all of this banter from Obama supporters who say they don't understand why us PUMAs are not voting for Obama – and plan on either writing Hillary in or voting for McCain. It isn't about Obama – its about taking back our party. There was injustice done by the DNC. You do not strip the votes of Millions of Americans and then expect us to jump on the broken band wagon. Our votes, however we choose to make them are in protest to THE DNC; not Obama. Sure, many of us feel he isnt qualified – but it's not about that anymore. It's about preserving the most precious right we have – our vote (and not 50% of it).
