(CNN) – Both Barack Obama and John McCain have issued statements responding to the latest job's report to that showed 62,000 jobs were lost in June.

“Our economy has now shed 438,000 jobs over the past six months, while workers' wages fail to keep pace with the skyrocketing cost of gas, groceries and healthcare," Obama said in the statement "The American people are paying the price for the failed economic policies of the past eight years, and we can't afford four more years of more of the same. That is the essential issue of this campaign because Senator McCain has fully embraced the Bush economic agenda. I believe it has to change."

"Americans across this country are hurting and today's job numbers are just the latest indication. From rising gas prices to home foreclosures, families are struggling to meet economic challenges that become greater every day," McCain said. "Washington can no longer abdicate its responsibility to act. Our focus must be clear: enact policies to create jobs today."

Full statements after the jump

Obama:

“As we head into the 4th of July weekend, today's report that our economy has lost another 62,000 jobs is a stark reminder that far too many Americans will spend this holiday out of work and struggling to provide for their families because of the failed policies of the last eight years.

“Our economy has now shed 438,000 jobs over the past six months, while workers' wages fail to keep pace with the skyrocketing cost of gas, groceries and healthcare. The American people are paying the price for the failed economic policies of the past eight years, and we can't afford four more years of more of the same. That is the essential issue of this campaign because Senator McCain has fully embraced the Bush economic agenda. I believe it has to change.

“But, as these numbers demonstrate, the American people can't wait another six months. We need action now.

“That's why I'm calling on Congress and the President to enact real, immediate relief with energy rebates for working families this summer, a fund to help families avoid foreclosure, extended benefits for the long-term jobless, and assistance to states that have been hard-hit by the economic downturn.

“As President, I'll move us in a new direction with policies to restore broad-based, bottom up growth that benefits all Americans. I will provide working families with a middle-class tax cut; fight for affordable health care and college tuition; work to help raise workers' wages, and invest in infrastructure, education and a clean energy future to create millions of new jobs. That's the change the American people need.”

McCain:

"Americans across this country are hurting and today's job numbers are just the latest indication. From rising gas prices to home foreclosures, families are struggling to meet economic challenges that become greater every day. Washington can no longer abdicate its responsibility to act. Our focus must be clear: enact policies to create jobs today.

"To get our economy back on track, we must enact a jobs-first economic plan that supports job creation, provide immediate tax relief for families, enact a plan to help those facing foreclosure, lower health care costs, invest in innovation, move toward strategic energy independence and open more foreign markets to our goods.

"The American people cannot afford an economic agenda that will take our country in the wrong direction and cost jobs. At a time when our small businesses need support from Washington, we cannot raise taxes, increase regulation and isolate ourselves from foreign markets. These are the same old siren songs that have failed the American people time and time again."

Another Depression? Nope, a McCain presidency would only deepen the current economic crisis we find ourselves in. How dare the oil companies and the current administration tell us to curb our consumption? It's our consumption that keeps things going. We should be drilling on our lands and putting those who are sticking it to us right outta business. Send them back to their desert tents. STAND UP, AMERICA!!! Our wages haven't kept up with the cost of living, goods, services, health insurance, or much else for at least 20 years. Hmmmm, I feel something trickling down, but it's not some pseudo-intelligent Republican's idea of smart economic policies.

See Europe… unemployment rate is over 10%… in the US, it's between 3-6%… depending on how bad the economy is doing.

So, by electing a far left liberal talking about change and complaining a job loss, he will then institute policies similar to europe, where they have a very high unemployment rate because why work when the government can take care of you through taxes.

Val   July 3rd, 2008 1:57 pm ET

I wanted to comment on the previous ticker "McCain denies grabbing foreign official", but it's closed now. So here we go: Brian, you got a good point there – your reasoning makes sense and this article is actually funny.

And YES I would vote for McCain over Obama in the heartbeat. Better have a president with a temper who can stand up and protect us and our country when necessary (that's McCain), than a spineless empty suit who, without preconditions, will negotiate the fate of our country with the tyrants such as Ahmadinejad and Chavez (that's Obama).

It is going to stay this way as long as we keep depending on this WTO that is NOT working at all for the everyday person. The only way we will get back on the right track is for us to start getting more self sufficient. The American know how has done it before and it is time to do it again with all the talent we have out there in the USA. And we get leaders with the insight that Ross Perot had because he sure was right about that big "Sucking Sound" . He scared a lot of people in very high places.
Google him. Very interesting.

tigerakabj   July 3rd, 2008 1:41 pm ET

McCain:

1. "The American people cannot afford an economic agenda that will take our country in the wrong direction and cost jobs." – so why are you proposing the same Bush tax cuts for the wealthy during a time of war? And why do you support a lopsided trade deal like NAFTA and CAFTA that ship our jobs oversees and imports lead toys from China?

2. "At a time when our small businesses need support from Washington, we cannot raise taxes, increase regulation and isolate ourselves from foreign markets." – Who said anything about isolation? We live in a global society that cannot be reversed. And trade deals like NAFTA need to be regulated in America's favor, otherwise we get lead toys from China for example.

3. "These are the same old siren songs that have failed the American people time and time again." – The entire platform you stand on (i.e. Bush tax cuts, privatization of health care, off-shore drilling, no help on education, continuation of the Chinese-funded Iraq war) has been proven a failure. No matter how much you try, 2+2 won't equal 5.

Bring on the debates so Barack can dismantle McCain's baseless argument for all the country to see. A young, brilliant, and coherent top-dog lawyer v. senile, lobbyists-loving, Bush-hugging old coot.

"same old siren songs"…?
Oh McCain, you make it sound like an ancient fairy tale – one that you've had a leading role in for the last eight years.

Time to put this story to a close – and pick up a new book.

McCain will have no credibility with the economy or security, while he 'enacts a plan' wrapping the same old book with a 'change' dust cover.

shame on the DNC   July 3rd, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Obama is the least electable democratic candidate, in a year when a democrat can NOT lose the election.

That is why the DNC and the left wingers worked SO hard to install him as nominee. EVEN an unqualified, ineperienced left wing socialist radical elitist has a running chance in today's political climate.

It was NOW or never for Obama- a country that is in such a bad way that even the worst democrat appears to be better to many people than the best republican.

Winning by default- that is the Obama way since he has no merits and no track record.

MurphyMorseJohnson   July 3rd, 2008 1:21 pm ET

Americans want a viable economy sensitive to environmental concerns–NOT A REPUBLICAN ECONOMY DBA the Bushes, Cheneys, and McCains. The Republican economy just cost another 60,000 jobs this past month alone. The Republican economy has taken gas prices from $1 per gallon to $4, energy prices, and food prices unspeakable. The Republican economy will have caused the appropriation of over $2 trillion to Iraq, a trillion owed to China, a loss of homes to homeowners, college education affordable to the rich only, and likewise for healthcare. The Republican economy has cost the lives of countless people. When Bush "hit the ground running", he
allowed mailing visas to 9/11 terrorists posthumously.

Not only is the Republican economy impervious to the plight of regular American families, it is also impervious to the environment. Republicans especially have fought regulation, environmental concerns and safeguards to increase corporate profits. Now we face verifiable global warming irrespective of the health, safety and wellbeing of people–from Katrina victims to tomato lovers. Under the Republican economy in light of all of the foregoing, regular Americans will simply continue to suffer in order to make the filthy rich richer. But, McCain need not worry–he married money.

Erika, KS   July 3rd, 2008 1:21 pm ET

Blah, blah, blah Obama. Is that all you have? Ragging on McCain because he's "embraced the Bush policies?" What is YOUR solution? What are YOU going to do about? What steps are YOU going to talk to improve anything? Nothing? Just talk. Admit it, you're out of your league buddy. Go away.

Jeffrey Allen Miller NY   July 3rd, 2008 1:18 pm ET

Only Pres. Bush increased employment by directly/indirectly hiring 2 million at the federal level (the greatest payroll increase in the history of the country.) Presidents have no business hiring to boost the employment numbers just to make it look as though our economy is shot. Ours has truly never recovered since 9.11 on the employment front.

Cut the losses now with one large dump — fire 72.5% of the federal workforce and reward business for tapping-into "our" talent with real jobs to compete in the global marketplace. That is what I want these candidates to say. (And I believe Ron Paul was on board.) That is how we grow this economy, through innovative businesses, and without government intervention.

McCain can not bring American jobs back.
Obama can not bring American jobs back.
Hillary Clinton would not be able to do so nor any other future President.

The only people who can do it are us. But we don't want to! What we want is to shop, shop, shop for the piles of a very cheap stuff we really don't need.
Every time you buy a piece of sophisticated electronics for $29.99 or anything costing 99 cents, ask yourself how this product could be made so cheaply?! Don't want to? Well, don't complain that American jobs go offshore. We are the ones who send them there.

Obama-Junkie, IL   July 3rd, 2008 12:56 pm ET

The average American does not know that so far under GW Bush's presidency that America has gained 5.1 million jobs under Bush's last 7-and-a-half years. Under the Bill Clinton presidency America gained 22 million jobs over 8 years, and gained 5.1 million jobs in the last two years of Clinton's presidency.

Also under GW Bush the US national debt has gone up from 5.8 to nearly 10 trillion dollars. That is a $4.2 trillion increase in 7.5 years!!!! Under Bill Clinton the national debt only went up $1.6 trillion in only 8 years.

And McCain wants to continue the Bush economic policies? NO THANK YOU!

Rudy NYC   July 3rd, 2008 12:55 pm ET

I agree with everything the McCain statement said. Even Obama’s statement was similar when you overlook the Bush bashing.

But, neither one of them proposed any concrete solution to actually fix anything. “…calling on Congress and the President” is not concrete. “…enact a job-first economic plan..” is not concrete either. They are both telling people what they want to here, but which one has real answers?

Your postings have NOTHING to do with the issues.

Why aren't you asking HOW both candidates plan to turn the economy around when BOTH candidate's current plans will only increase the national deficit by Billions of dollars?

Nether Obama nor McCain have sound economic plans. Neither!

Obama's plan will increase taxes, increase inflation, and the national deficit. McCain's plan will cut taxes to the wealthy and increase the national deficit. Obama's plan calls for spending the "War" money at home, but that is borrowed money from China! Obama and McCain BOTH are for NAFTA and WTO. Obama just flopped on renegotiating contracts…McCain will veto every pork barrel bill, which is a start…but how is either candidate going to create jobs if it is more lucrative for corporations to send them overseas?

Ian   July 3rd, 2008 12:24 pm ET

A quarter from 1964 contained about 90% silver and could buy about a gallon of gas. It took about five of those quarters to get an ounce of silver. Look at the value of an ounce of silver today and divide it by five. Ironically (sarcasm) it's about the same as a gallon of gas today. If our money were actually backed by something gas would still only be around 30 cents a gallon.

You need to look at the whole picture and not be one sided Please don't think I am for McCain either. If I vote in November, I will try to figure out who will do the worse damage and vote for the other person. After having not missed a election in my adult life and always voted for Democrats, I am ready to stay home on this one. I don't like either candidate. Why – I could write pages of reasons.

Though I hate the thought….John McCain has a pretty good shot at being elected president (not dog catcher like I hoped). Has anyone seen the National Polls? Obama up by 2% and of course withing the margin of error. How could this be? Does America dislike Obama so much as to want to continue the Bush legacy for another 4-8 years.

Yess …I said 4-8 yrs. Because there is the strong possibility that Jeb will be his VP. How about that America? Let's see 16 year's of Republican rule. Bombs away Iran …say hello to $10 a gallon gas.

I say to Obama and his supporters, look and learn what it takes to be "presidential" from McCain because all your candidate knows is to say NO. Mccain, who will do your job for you when or if you became #1 person in America?

You don't have idea on how economic work, but that is why you should not run for the office.

Mcain Presidency is not chief of defence, you need to compete for a position in security, not presidency.

Ohhh I forgot you can't even target a spot without bombing our service men and women's position.

So, to command s unit won't be appropriate either for Mccain.

You know Mccain never get no target when he was flying the aircraft.

Getting shotdwon ehhhh!!! we have to question whether you know your job or if you qualify to pilot that plane.

Mccain you have no clue about the economy so butt out. How are you going to speak about what you have no idea about?

Mccain is a joke, he can't keep lobbyiest's money, and jump on every thing that you has no idea how it works.

How can we trust your words when it often change?

MCCAIN CAN NOT KEEP HIS CAMPAIGN'S MEMBERS' PERMANENT.

HOW WOULD YOU CREATE JOB WHEN YOU HAVE FIRED YOUR EMPLOYEES 2 TIMES IN 9 MONTHS?

It is a tough one. They will respond but that's just respond-op, just like a a photo-op, you have to do it for political reasons.

There is no quick fix to this. It is capitalism. Supply and demand. The effects, whether good or bad come out after years and years. Today's situation is because of 8 years of faulty policies. It will take years to fix for either of the two candidates.

I am insulted when people call us sore losers. We are true patriots dedicated to the principles of fair politics.

We are neither angry nor upset that Hillary lost. We are dismayed, appalled and incensed by HOW and WHY she lost.

She lost due to unfair electoral processes, anti-Hillary bias, outright sexism, a pro-Obama media, a corrupt DNC, AND… the ugly, negative strategy of agitating intra-party hatred used by the Obama campaign and Obama supporters.

We are not racist. We do not think either gender or race are legitimate factors in choosing the best person to lead our Country.

But we do oppose and despise the way Obama used race as an issue to divide not only fellow democrats, but all Americans.
Obama uses race as a shield and as a sword against his detractors. Obama repeatedly injects race into the campaign.

It's interesting how OBAMA actually wants to act NOW and is very specific on how to address the issue.
While McCain is very broad and not critizing the current government.
Notice he never actually talk about the plan, but just says he will enact one.

And he's accusing OBAMA of all rhetoric and no substance?

I find that very ironic.

brenda   July 3rd, 2008 11:40 am ET

you obama fanatics need to look and listen. the cost of everything is getting out of hand because of the high cost of oil. obama doesnt want to drill for oil, doesnt want nuclear plants and really has no problem taxing people to death. how does this heklp the economy? it doesnt. he wants you to remain depoendent on the governement,…that way the government gets to control you (sort like obama is doing now with his followers).

Allies of Sen. John McCain have found new loopholes in the campaign-finance law he helped write — and they're using them to reel in huge contributions to help him compete with Sen. Barack Obama.

Obama has no clue on the economy except "It's all Bush's fault!"

Obama offers no solutions.

You know what McCain. The first step to stopping this bleeding of America's wealth is to start withdrawal for Iraq. Simple economics, by us borrowing money we don't have to fund a war instead of investing in America, we(no the gov.) is weakening the dollar which affects all company and their ability to compete with the world. Employees becoming more expensive and companies start slashing jobs.

Florida for OBAMA!   July 3rd, 2008 11:25 am ET

McCain has absolutely no idea how to fix all that is now broken in our country. He just rambles in his statements and doesnt offer any clear solutions to anything.

Yea, right McCain you really think you understand and can relate with us, hahahahahahahahahahaha.

You tried to be President in "2000″, you didn't win, was it because you didn't know anything about the economy then and now we are to believe in "2008″, you has had to live with the type of day to day, month to month struggles we have had to endure since "2000″? ………I thoughts so…….nothings about you have changed.

The only help O'Bama has offered is more jobs paid for by the Government. He has no plan, only talk. He cannot make companies hire when he increases taxes, companies will not be able to invest or hire. He is a man who only talks a good game for whoever he is pandering to this week.

He has no plan…… He is a NOVELTY being used by the left to forward thier agenda. That is sad for him and this country.

LT for Obama   July 3rd, 2008 11:15 am ET

McCain just finished telling Mexico and Columbia that he supports more jobs there. What about here John? How are you going to tell all these displaced families that you will support more jobs going to foreign countries?

Also, talk about out of touch, I heard this morning that he said that us little people should not take vacations if we are struggling to put gas in the car or pay for groceries. In 44 years, I have gone on vacation only twice. I have never been able to afford to go on vacation. So what is your solution for people like me?

Joe the Troll   July 3rd, 2008 11:14 am ET

The tax relief for families McCain speaks of is for just a few, extremely rich families. And what good does it do to be open to foreign markets when we're not manufacturing nearly as much as we were?

As for jobs, McCain wants to create jobs by opening drilling in Alaska. Obama speaks of investing in infrastructure across America. Not only is that a sounder plan, it's also necessary, and a legitimate use of tax dollars.

Brad - California   July 3rd, 2008 11:13 am ET

"Americans across this country are hurting…"Blah, blah, blah, mumble, mumble.

Are YOU an American? Are YOU hurting? Do YOU have plenty of money? Do gas prices affect YOU? Do food prices affect YOU? Senator McCain, YOU ARE PATHETIC. You have absolutely no right to speak for me or for any other American, especially when your answer to everything is more trade.

The people of Arizona ought to be ashamed of themselves at having given you the national stage for so long.

Here's the REAL PROBLEM with a McCain Presidency. I'm a psych nurse and individuals who have been war prisoners, tortured etc. have significant psychological issues, anger, depression, anxiety etc. They can suddenly "break" and require emergent psychological treatment. A sudden "break" can be triggered by increased stress or other personal issues. No thanks, no way should we elect a potential "time bomb" as President of our country.

It was not $700,000, was it? $700 g's?
That is so typical of middle America (insert smirk here).

My question to Senator McCain is this
IF your party had control of the entire government (House, Senate and Presidency) from Jan 2001 up to Jan 2007, why is it that we're in the trouble we're in? After all, it was under full Republican rule that this downfall has taken place.
Now, the Dems have a majority in the House, and barely a majority in the Senate, even though one could argue that with Senator Lieberman working hard for you, it's really a 50-50 split.
So, again, with all the power, with all the control to set the agendas and then take away filibustering rights from the Dems, why are we here today? And if it happened under Rep watch, what specific issues are you going to do totally differently than the past 7 years?

Let me know when he gets around to that.

Meantime, Senator Obama is advocating a tax for middle income families – the ones who will turn around and spend it on food, fuel and other necesseities as opposed to the super rich who will spend it abroad on vacations or sock it away in tax free municipal bonds.

Dave, Illinois   July 3rd, 2008 10:56 am ET

To bad that two years of Democrat control of Congress has led to this. The economy was humming along fine before they took over. Oh yeah, and gas was over a dollar cheaper. Pelossi, Reed, and Obama will do for this country what the terrorists could not – destroy it from within.

Let’s see what he’ll say when he finishes reading ‘the Greenspan’s book’.

Vote for a candidate like U   July 3rd, 2008 10:52 am ET

I am voting for McCain because he understands my problems. Like last week my wife charged over fifty five dollars on her Kohl's credit card and now I have to log in extra hours at the factory to cover it. I feel your pain McCain. John McCain understands America and he will get my vote…in sixteen years!

Charlotte   July 3rd, 2008 10:49 am ET

saga4obama, Where do you get the knowledge to make statements such as, "Cindy McCain spends $750,000 on her credit cards?" Do you just make stuff up? Cindy McCain was not dating John while he was with his wife. They were seperated for months before he met Cindy. Cindy had a drug problem, which she overcame. Obama, according to his book, also had a drug problem which I hope he has overcome. Cindy is not my main concern, nor is Michelle. I would prefer to not ever see either one of them again. When Bill Clinton was running for office they drug Hillary through the mud. It is called politics and it stinks. We love to hear the nastiest things said about people, it is called news and it also stinks. People without money love to hear people who have it aren't happy either. It is called jealousy and it stinks as well….

Patrick Henry, Ft. Myers   July 3rd, 2008 10:49 am ET

Create more government jobs to police the big industrial polluters and that will help out people that need a job. Especially high risk and porr people. I agree, relax environmental restrictions and other obstacles that contunue to make it more difficult to do business and hurt job creation. Junk this foolish idea that we are responsible or can control climate change. It is a joke and we will pay for it with our economy. Start utilizing our natural resources of oil and gas AND develop alternative energy sources. We can do these things AND protect the environment. I don't care if it is a dem or repub, I would support anyone who opens their eyes and contributes to a REAL solution.

The McCons have nothing to worry about. John McCain hasn't had to put gas in his own car for years. In 2007 alone they paid almost $300,000 cash for housekeepers (make sure they were all legal). What does McCon know about the economy. NOTHING, he said it himself.

McCain was apart of the "same old siren songs", and still cuddles Bush's failed agenda. We won't see no positive change with McCain, just the same old crap.

Obama is the person who will take charge and work hard to put his agenda's into action.

Obama for President !!

Sally   July 3rd, 2008 10:38 am ET

Notice no specific numbers in McCain's statement. You cannot perceive the gravity of a situation if you cannot recall details like a half million jobs loss in six months. This information puts his support of president Bush's failed economic policies in an unfavorable light.

Moe, NY   July 3rd, 2008 10:36 am ET

McCain's plan sounds like more of the same to me! Jobs-first economic plan? People cannot afford the gas to get to work. Immediate tax relief for families? Won't hold my breath. A plan to help those facing foreclosure?…A bit late in coming…if it will be coming at all…the Democrats already have a plan and the Republicans shot it down…again, won't hold my breath. Lower health care costs?….McCain just doesn't get it…people still will not be able to afford coverage and millions will still go without health insurance. Open more foreign markets….a repeat of NAFTA? That is part of what got us into the situation we are in now along with the greed and corruption of the GOP. I will not vote for this man….can't afford more of the same! Change is what is needed! McCain is just out of touch with America and her people. The only thing I do believe McCain will do is continue to promote war at every turn.

Lee   July 3rd, 2008 10:36 am ET

Sounds like the same old policies that have hurt this country for the last 8 years to me Mccain…

Jay   July 3rd, 2008 10:34 am ET

I wish even if it was just for a day, that I could experience living among the wealthiest of the wealthy so that I can fully understand why people like John McCain-Bush and others can't forsee there distruction of the economy due to there greed! When news comes that 62,000 jobs have been lost, all they can do is structure a sentence with a lot of commas that appears to paint a picture that they really know the answer to poverty. Unless you know John McCain personally and know he will change a few details for you, I can't see him as our next president. It would be disastrous! He has no idea!

Substance not Rhetoric   July 3rd, 2008 10:32 am ET

It is funny how more and more McCain is started to say government needs to intervene. Isn't that Socialism? Now who is following who when it comes to policies. Obama has been talking about stopping the war and investing in the infrastructure since day one of his campaign.

BTW, For all those wh say Obama is not qualified, please tell me what are the qualifications to be President. Because it is not if you are qualified to be a leader it is do you have the qualities of a leader. And Obama through this campaign, his organization, his ablity to inspire, and confiict resolution skill has clearly proven to be the best leader out of this bunch.

Being a fighter (HRC) doesn't make you a leader. It makes you a fighter. Being a hero (McCain) doesn't make you a leader. It makes you a hero. Being a leader (BHO) makes you a leader. This country needs a leader.

Man on the Street   July 3rd, 2008 10:32 am ET

boered1   July 3rd, 2008 10:31 am ET

Hmm one of these two men has a plan the other speaks of a desire to enact a plan a desire to lower health care cost and to FINALLY move towards energy independance (something the republicans have managed to prevent since Carter enacted his plans to do so.. don't you all wish we ahd listened to Carter back in the 70s? I sure do!) Yep one has a plan one has a speech abpout making a plan.. guess Obama is more than an empty suit since HE is the one with the plan.. another lie/distortion discarded the crap that Obama has no plans and is just an empty suit Good job Mr. President Obama!

Tim Hutchins   July 3rd, 2008 10:31 am ET

It is not "failed policies of the last 8 years" as Obama put it. Our problems are caused by people who bought houses they could not afford and also Arabs who are trying to control us. Obama has not offered one solution to either of these problems. His only response has been "that will do no good for 10 years". He's a loser; knows nothing except how to talk/talk/talk.

Common Sense   July 3rd, 2008 10:29 am ET

"…workers' wages fail to keep pace with the skyrocketing cost of gas, groceries and healthcare…"

If Obama truly believes this, then why is he considering and proposing increased government spending on non-vital programs while considering raising taxes? Does he believe people with less money in their pockets will be more able to pay their bills?

It boggles the mind that people think raising taxes in bad economic times is a good thing. This is why the concept of the balanced budget amendment is a disaster waiting to happen. Most of the amendment proposals don't call for Congress to cut expenses when revenue levels drop. It just says that revenue income and the budget must be in line. That leaves increasing taxes as the only other option. So, people who can't pay their bills will now have to pay more taxes just so Congress can balance the budget without cutting unnecessary programs and possibly alienate part of their voting base? Seriously. These politicians have no real concept of economics.

Sarah, 23, FL   July 3rd, 2008 10:29 am ET

McCain, Don't Blame Washington!!!! Blame the billions of dollars spent on this ridiculous war instead of the American people and that's why the economy is going down.

Obama wants to invest the American people again. We need jobs, we need to feed our children, we need to go to college, we need our homes, we need affordable gas, grocery bills, and healthcare—America is tired of investing in the world. Bush invested in Iraq and Afganistan and these nations still HATE us. America has been forgotten and OBAMA is here to bring a change, A CHANGE THAT IS MUCH NEEDED.

Isn't this exactly what McCain wants as he is a strong endorser of NAFTA and free trade and shipping jobs overseas? He wants the blue collars to loose their jobs as to force them to go back to school and get higher paying jobs that are more "acceptable" for Americans.

So this is great news for the McCain camp. The axis of evil, the GOP agenda is working out perfectly.

h sutherand   July 3rd, 2008 10:26 am ET

Obama and the Democrats need to look back to 1999 and 2000 and see the same thing happening with the Clinton administration. They might learn how to help the situation and that does not include taxation.

jane in CA   July 3rd, 2008 10:21 am ET

If alternative energy initiatives would be started now, that will ignite the economy through jobs, and public awareness in conservation that will affect the gas price.

John in Columbus Ohio   July 3rd, 2008 10:20 am ET

"The American people cannot afford an economic agenda that will take our country in the wrong direction and cost jobs. At a time when our small businesses need support from Washington, we cannot raise taxes, increase regulation and isolate ourselves from foreign markets. These are the same old siren songs that have failed the American people time and time again."

So are these the "siren songs" that have been in place over the last 7.5 years to get us where we are now? I mean, I could have sworn that since January of 2001 we've been lowering taxes, decreasing regulation, and opening ourselves to foreign markets. And now the economy is screwed. So it would seem, with a simplicity that a child could recognize, that the siren songs that have failed the American people are those of the Republicans, and of Bush and McCain. Easy enough to understand, 8 years of a Democrat president and we were doing great, 8 years of a Republican president and our nation is locked in an endless war, owing hundreds of billions of dollars to China, and our economy is about to collapse. Hmm.

They surely weren't going to pay $20,000 for a Chevy !!! We as a nation have to get back on course. Thanks Obama for being realistic and caring. Hey john, question for ya – Why do you all of a sudden care now? And why do you continue to staunchly support bush's tax cuts for the rich and big corporations? The trickle down theory doesn't work and the economy has proved that. John Mccain, why don't you care?

McCrazy   July 3rd, 2008 10:15 am ET

Johnny sure is good at spelling out the fact that American's are hurting, yet doesn't seem to address fixing it.

McCain: My friends, i know American's are hurting, high gas prices, homes lost, jobs lost, lives lost. I know my friends.

Reporter: How do you suggest fixing it if you are president.

McCain: Uhhhhhhh, gotta go, I am late for my meeting with the Sunnis or Shiites, I can't remember which one is on our side. Bomb Iran my friends…
