McCain will talk the economy next week.
McCain will talk the economy next week.

(CNN) — Kicking off the post-Fourth of July campaign stretch, John McCain will spend a week focusing on the economy with a series of events in key fall battleground states in his first tour organized by his new campaign team.

The presumptive Republican nominee will set the stage Monday with the unveiling of his jobs-first economic plan in Colorado.

On Tuesday, McCain returns to Washington to address the 79th Annual LULAC Convention – his latest attempt to reach out to the Hispanic community in the wake of new surveys that suggest his Democratic rival may hold the edge among that key voting bloc. Barack Obama will also address the gathering that day.

On Wednesday, the focus is energy and jobs: McCain travels to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to highlight his Lexington Project energy plan which calls for an increase in domestic oil production, including a call for a lifting of the ban on drilling in ANWR. He then heads to Portsmouth, Ohio for a town hall meeting.

Thursday the Arizona senator hits another battleground state, holding a town hall on jobs in Belleville, Michigan, with a special focus on small businesses. That evening, he will speak to voters in the newly-competitive fall swing state of Virginia via a long-distance "tele-town hall."

McCain will wrap up his economic tour Friday in one final swing state, with plans to hold a town hall aimed at women voters in Hudson, Wisconsin.

We're on the verge of needing New Deal legislation (employment, economic development, infrastructure) in this country and the republicans will nominate a duffer, a Know Nothing. McCain's advisors should cancel the 'economic talks' and let Johnny play craps like he really wants to. We've had nearly eight years of a president who wont study the issues. Why four more of a man who wont remember them.

McCain is too old   July 3rd, 2008 3:13 pm ET

TOO OLD. TOO OLD. TOO OL.D.

bitterman   July 3rd, 2008 3:11 pm ET

LOL! this man knows nothing about economy, he still needs to be educated. In so many issues too…

judy   July 3rd, 2008 3:11 pm ET

Frankly, Senator John McCain is more experienced in every way, shape and form for the office of the Presidency than Obama. Senator McCain has worked with both Republicans and Democrats in the United States Senate on legislation important to our nation, while the only record Senator Obama has in the United States Senate is that of trying to advance HIMSELF politically.

Greg   July 3rd, 2008 3:10 pm ET

How is the recession blamed on Pelosi and Reid, when every legislative project they have had is filibustered by the crowd who were against filibustering when they were in control. The tax cuts, the war and are blooming deficit are to blame and that blame lays squarely on the republicans

Brian Phoenix AZ   July 3rd, 2008 3:09 pm ET

This next week should be a hoot! Listening to Mr. "outsource" himself telling the American people that sending jobs overseas is good thing.

Tyrone   July 3rd, 2008 3:06 pm ET

Talking about the economy?? Correct me if I am wrong but didn't he, just a few months ago admit that he knows nothing about the economy?

McCain is a joke and who ever votes for him is a Joke also. And if McCain wins the presidency, all of you who voted for him deserve the disaster that you are asking for.

zius   July 3rd, 2008 3:06 pm ET

her goes…1 mccain supports free trade with no concern for american workers …….this leads to loss of jobs and capital invested outside the our country 2mccain supports making bush tax cuts permanent ….making no sense the mcbush tax cut had no economical benifet it only raised our NATIONAL DEPT 3 put health care on the free market ….oh my god.. so that we will be talking next time (god forbid) about the rising cost of drugs and healthcare in the open market and the role of speculators ..just like oil 4 no true intention to invest in the GREEN MARKET something that is hurting our car makers leading us to go behind in investment and market share ..remember dril dril dril 5 finally ill take maccains word ..HE KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT THE ECONOMY ….PLUS A 100 YEAR WAR IN IRAQ WILL BREAK OUR BUDGET AND PUT IN DEBT TO COUNTRIS LIKE CHINA …UGHHH ……OBAMA ALLTHE WAY …… no mc-stupid

Obama 08!!!

Brian from Fort Mill, S.C.   July 3rd, 2008 3:03 pm ET

We already know what McCain's economic policy is. We can sum it up in three words:

"Stay the course!"

Miae   July 3rd, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Please stop attacking the candidates! I couldn't stand Republicans when they tried to impeach Bill Clinton and now, I can't stand you Democrates for attacking John McCain.

You guys are not helping Obama by attacking John McCain. Have some respect for the person who served this country for his entire life wether you agree with him or not.

What has your candidate, Obama, done besides giving prepared speeches? He won't even debate John McCain because he knows that he has no substance and would not be able to debate with John.

The more you attack him, the less I and many of the Indepedents will vote for Obama becasue if this is the "Change" he is going to bring to our country, I don't want it!!

Wake up People!! You people and the media brainwashed because of your hatrad towards Republicans…. Sad…

Is anyone suggesting Obama knows something more about the Economy than McCain? Comeone folks…atleast lets be honest McCain says he has more to learn and Obama says he already has the judgment…

The Republicans have controlled the house and Senate since 1994 and then in 2006 the Democrats took over. You can't undo what has been done in two years. It takes time and work. The reality of it is is no one knows how deep this mess goes that the Republican and Bush's administration has gotten us into.

Accountant Guy   July 3rd, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Only a real departure from the current republican administration can save the economy and countless # of Americans who have lost their homes, their jobs and so on.

Mcain economic package won't cut it, it is more of the same.

We want change.

Obama 08 & 12.

JD   July 3rd, 2008 2:49 pm ET

The US Congress has 435 elected members in the House and 100 elected members in the Senate, and full Constitutional power to enact legislation. Both are controlled by the Democrat Party, and have been since 2006. What in the name of heaven has CONGRESS been doing to improve the economy???

Worst Congress. EVER.

Val   July 3rd, 2008 2:46 pm ET

wanted to comment on the previous ticker "McCain denies grabbing foreign official", but it's closed now. So here we go: Brian, you got a good point there - your reasoning makes sense and this article is actually funny.

And YES I would vote for McCain over Obama in the heartbeat. Better have a president with a temper who can stand up and protect us and our country when necessary (that's McCain), than a spineless empty suit who, without preconditions, will negotiate the fate of our country with the tyrants such as Ahmadinejad and Chavez (that's Obama).

Together We Can! United We Will!

McCain 08! McCain All The Way!

Adam from Memphis   July 3rd, 2008 2:43 pm ET

Here's McCain's economic plan (either I'm psychic or I've just heard the same thing from Dubya over the last 8 years): Drill, drill, drill, and drill some more; fuel economy standards? not a problem - lets drill even more and make sure that "ALL" our beaches are pockmarked with decaying metallic oil platforms. And while we're at it, we should ship a few more of our jobs overseas. What about our ability to manufacture weapons of war? Not a problem. We should ship all those jobs overseas also.

4 THE CONSTITUTION   July 3rd, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Cindy charged over 700,000 this month on one of her credit cards-McMillionaire collects 100% disability and owns 7 homes. He didn't support the Vets bill. I guess homeless vets don't need more money. This is absurd-not patriotic.

This is great. McCain admits he doesn't know much about economics and the economy. Maybe the people who talk to him…. the citizens… can explain it to him. Maybe they can tell him how much gas costs. Maybe they can show him how to pump gas since he hasn't done that in years. Of course, when they talk to him, they will need to use small words…. and make sure he doesn't doze off. The best thing McCain can do when discussing the economy is shut up and listen to people who do understand it…. the hard working people who own only one home…. not 13. He has nothing to offer hard-working people unless they want 4 more years of Bush economics.

obama understands economics.

Anthony, Dallas, Tx   July 3rd, 2008 2:36 pm ET

Economy!!!!!!!! I am 26 yrs old and I am worrying about what this country will look like if McBush become president.

Can we just be American?   July 3rd, 2008 2:35 pm ET

Wow McBush is going to talk to common Americans about the economy… his wife spends 750K <== on credit card… in a month. Now tell me how will he relate to common America? I can not phantom making that much money in a year and the mean income range states the same for the majority of America. With his financial back ground he will never relate to me (common American) I understand him wanting to drill and spoil our land to produce additional oil that may provide some relief years to come… His wife spends 750K in a month so I am sure he has savings that will sustain his family and friends until the drilling that will spoil our land manifest into some sort of relief…. <== Unbelievable… yeah talk all you want the only people that will relate is the big oil companies …

McCain is going to address the economy? Give me a break. The GOP is toast and anyone that actually thinks McSame has a chance, is off their rocker. McCain is going to be crushed and only the Media benifits from pretending this is an actual horserace. A case in point, I notice that a great deal of recent CNN articles on McCain now do not allow comments from the public. The media does this for rating of course. Too bad its not working.

Steve   July 3rd, 2008 2:30 pm ET

Is it just me, or does McCain remind anyone else of a slick used car salesman when he smiles and says 'My friends…'?

There's an obvious fix to the economy….draw down troop levels in Iraq, and get that money back into this country. Foster true energy independence with alternatives to oil (even domestic oil…most of it isn't for us, folks). Reign in government spending and corruption.

Maxine   July 3rd, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Mccain said he knows nothing about the economy. This Country is going to be in big trouble if we listen to Mccain more of the Same Bush

eric   July 3rd, 2008 2:27 pm ET

It never ceases to amaze me that Republicans can continue talking about running an economy when they obivously know nothing about it. After 5 administrations working off of Reaganomics, you'd figure we'd see some, or any, of the benefits of it. We've seen its effects though: 3 recessions with another one on the way or here already and $6.5 trillion extra in debt. The only administration that didn't follow their trickle-down approach was the one that balanced the budget, gave us a small surplus and the longest uninterrupted economic expansion in American history. Based solely on the numbers, Republicans are clearly clueless.

U Will NEVER KNOW!!!!   July 3rd, 2008 2:25 pm ET

McCain……Washington can no longer abdicate its responsibility to act. Our focus must be clear: enact policies to create jobs today…..JUST WORDS……pondering!!!!

Capt. Smash, Salt Lake City, Utah   July 3rd, 2008 2:22 pm ET

We have all been involved in presidential campaigns in the past, but this campaign is special because of the unique honor of working for a candidate like John McCain — a man who never surrenders.

Just think if McCain was the president of the confederacy during the Civil War the South would have been totally destroyed, and millions of men and women would have lost there lives. This man does not know how to cut his losses and move on.

Further, if he was president during the Vietnam conflict we would still be fighting and more than million Americans would have died.

Perhaps Sen. McCain will talk about NAFTA and how Colombia will help USA unemployment to decrease. You know when you are out of touch with ordinary people it doesn't take much creativity to find cock and bull stories to tell. Then big incredible Joe Lieberman will be standing behind like shadow to help tell the full …..
You know when you can charge your platinium card with 50 000 to 100000 dollars in a month or so, and you have the gut to propose federal gas tax reduction of 18 cent per gallon it shows how elitist and lightyears gap between you and ordinary people who are affected by the economical down turn. May I say Dr. Pandering McCain, ordinary people are hurting real bad and cannot afford to celebrate 4th of July, how much more junting around the world for nothing!

What makes you think Obama knows anymore or can do any better with the economy? He has not been put to the "test" in any area that concerns our country. Also, remember the democrats voted for the war and they have had control of Congress and still they try and blame everything on the Republicans and President Bush. At least under President Bush our country has been safe since 9/11 and no scandals with the president chasing interns in the oval office!!!!

Ya' know.. this is the problem with most of the people on these blogs.. on both sides… You start ragging on one candidate or the other before you have even heard what they have to say. It points out a problem with our political system too. People say; "I'm a Democrat" or "I'm a Republican" and never even listen to what the other party or party's candidate has to say. How can you vote based on nothing more than party lines and rhetoric?? This isn't your high school football team you are rooting on here, this is a Presidential election. Open your eyes and ears and be your own person, that's why MOST of our distant ancestors came here in the first place. Freedom to decide for themselves.

Carol, Lansing MI   July 3rd, 2008 1:52 pm ET

I hope you show up in Lansing MI. There are a few of us Independents, Democrats AND Republicans that would like to tell you what we really think about you continuing Bushes failed policies.

Bob   July 3rd, 2008 1:34 pm ET

B Hussein Obama…….

You are correct the economy is bad I think we need to raise taxes……That wont cause small businesses owners to let people go or the economy to really tank. But hey we need social programs and need to help people pay there mortgage because they cant keep there finances in check

I cant complain, I am college educated via way of the millitary did 10 years of sevrvice for my country while getting my Masters Degree and am currently a target for the tax the so called "Wealthy" plan.

Liberals make me sick….Instead of waiting for free hand outs why dont you worry about helping your self. Repeat After Me It is not the Governments job to help me support myself. Tomorrow, I am going to enroll in night school and work 2 jobs if need be to better my self and make a better life for my family. OMG…..ANWAR? Drilling offshore?

First of all, these oil companies already have lots of areas that they own and can explore. DRILL THERE PLEASE!!! Start with that and call us next election PLEASE!!! What’s the problem with getting the oil from areas you already own?

Secondly, remember Exxon (Valdez) fiasco? America does not want another 2 or 3 of those offshore nor in ANWAR. Did you see what happened last week with Valdez? They owed over $5 billion due to there fiasco but that amount was reduced to just a percentage of that. Great example hey? With all the money that Exxon is making they should have doubled the amount not reduced it!

No way McCain. NOT THIS TIME!!!

Michael, Torrance, CA   July 3rd, 2008 1:31 pm ET

I know that McCain knows enough about the economy that he won't go the tax and spend route that Obama is talking! If you’re for much higher taxes and socializing America by having to get everything that the government thinks you need from them, then Obama is your man. But if you want lower taxes and less government in your life then you better vote for the old man!

Obama is the least electable democratic candidate, in a year when a democrat can NOT lose the election.

That is why the DNC and the left wingers worked SO hard to install him as nominee. EVEN an unqualified, ineperienced left wing socialist radical elitist has a running chance in today's political climate.

It was NOW or never for Obama- a country that is in such a bad way that even the worst democrat appears to be better to many people than the best republican.

Winning by default- that is the Obama way since he has no merits and no track record.

Sure keep bring up ANWR when thousands of acres that are under oil leases have not been explored or develped by the oil companies holding the leases, after all why should they develop new fields and even if they did, the oil from the fields if started today would not be avaiable until 2018-2023.

Jobs, what jobs, more service sector jobs, wait we are out sourcing those now, manufacturing jobs, don't think so, pretty soon everyone will be selling insurance and mutual funds to everyone else, a heck of a way to run an economy.

Americans want a viable economy sensitive to environmental concerns–NOT A REPUBLICAN ECONOMY DBA the Bushes, Cheneys, and McCains. The Republican economy just cost another 60,000 jobs this past month alone. The Republican economy has taken gas prices from $1 per gallon to $4, energy prices, and food prices unspeakable. The Republican economy will have caused the appropriation of over $2 trillion to Iraq, a trillion owed to China, a loss of homes to homeowners, college education affordable to the rich only, and likewise for healthcare. The Republican economy has cost the lives of countless people. When Bush "hit the ground running", he
allowed mailing visas to 9/11 terrorists posthumously.

Not only is the Republican economy impervious to the plight of regular American families, it is also impervious to the environment. Republicans especially have fought regulation, environmental concerns and safeguards to increase corporate profits. Now w face verifiable global warming irrespective of the health, safety and wellbeing of people–from Katrina victims to tomato lovers.Under the Republican economy in light of all of the foregoing, regular Americans will simply continue to suffer in order to make the filthy rich richer. But, McCain need not worry–he married money.

Vic   July 3rd, 2008 1:04 pm ET

OH how he fiip -flops!! George Bush the second. Carrying GW's water for him. Wake up McCain. Obama 08!!

Sharon Minnesota   July 3rd, 2008 1:02 pm ET

McCain knows enough to realize we need to start drilling for oil on our own property. Environmentalists will ruin America. China will be drilling 90 miles off the coast of Florida for the Cuban government very soon. Is that who you'd rather have out there off shore drilling? Considering their horrible record on environmental issues I would rather have American ingenuity and know how in those waters?

Franky   July 3rd, 2008 1:01 pm ET

were is my comment !!

Easy Rider   July 3rd, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Perhaps McCain can convince the attendees in his next town hall meeting in Belleville, Michigan, that his trip to promote free trade with Columbia and Mexico is in their best interests.

Hopefully, the people there will be smart enough to recognize a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Does Anyone Know the Truth?   July 3rd, 2008 12:58 pm ET

McCain stated himself that he is “not well versed on” economic issues. How can he be? He is an elitist with an elitist wife who have no clue or don’t care much about the price of anything as they don’t have to worry about paying for what they need to survive.

Back in 2000 I had backed John McCain. I read his book “Faith of Our Fathers” and was quite impressed until I did some digging and realized he never mentioned the man who, during a bombing raid, swam and saved McCain from drowning when his plane crashed in Viet Nam. That man’s name was Mai Van On, a Vietnamese peasant.
What I couldn’t understand is why wouldn’t you mention publically that someone saved your life? Then I did more digging and decided that I couldn’t back Mr. McCain for other reasons.

Beside his personal life running amok, his voting on veterans issues to say the least is bleak. I guess that is why there are some of us that won’t vote for this man. Integrity is what I look for in someone running for President. Self-aggrandizement without end is a characteristic flaw that I cannot overlook in someone running for president.

Having stated that, this year it may be time to vote for the candidate of the third party.

Rick FL   July 3rd, 2008 12:57 pm ET

"The issue of economics is not something I've understood as well as I should." McCain - December 2007

"I'm going to be honest: I know a lot less about economics…I still need to be educated." McCain - WSJ interview

McCain's comments should be heeded by voters, considering the economy has become the number one issue in this election. We need a balanced budget, and I have real concerns that McCain's expansion of Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy will only further our record-breaking debt.

Donald, Canton NC   July 3rd, 2008 12:57 pm ET

As Ronald Reagan used to say, "Here we go again", the "Double-Talk" Express is at is again.

Since McCain has repeatedly said he knows nothing about Economics (sic), I guess he'll have his puppet Phil Graham (Former Senator and current LOBBYIST) whose shenanigans helped ensure the current dire straits of our economy, write his policies and be his voice.

When are both Obama and McCain, as well as the American Public and news media, to the fact that both candidates are full of BS and are saying nothing new or that will improve our lives. Its nothing but campaign rhetoric.

Its high time the new media started holding McCain accountable for his blunders, double-talk, and flip-flopoping, or are they (you all) in bed with him???

Where has McCain Been?   July 3rd, 2008 12:55 pm ET

Where has he been during the last 8 years? He has been supporting and promoting Bush's failed policies and driving the average american into the ground while he buzzes around in his wife's private jet.

McCain has no plan only more of the same … the rich get richer and the rest get poorer.

Pol   July 3rd, 2008 12:52 pm ET

Even as a candidate McCain is a GOP joke, I am not even talking about presidency

Shannon   July 3rd, 2008 12:52 pm ET

Hey McShame, what about your own economy and that brand new shiny jet of yours. According to your tax return you earned less than $600,000 last year, how can you afford a private jet ? Or was that one of Cindy's credit card purchases.

Molly   July 3rd, 2008 12:51 pm ET

McCain is QUALIFIED to lead our country
OBama is NOT qualified to lead our country - SIMPLE FACT!!!

Obama is a FRAUD - he CHANGES his message to suit his political needs. The DNC picked the WRONG WEAK candiate that will never win the white house.

Senator Clinton is the best qualified
McCAin 2nd choice - NEVER obama

Anonymous   July 3rd, 2008 12:50 pm ET

OK, I will repeat again: even as a candidate McCain is a joke, I am not even talking about a presidency of this still great country.

Rudy NYC   July 3rd, 2008 12:49 pm ET

Ya know. Drilling for more oil on domestic lands sounds real good until you take a look at history. Recent decades have shown that when the US tries to expand its own domestic capacity, the current price of oil jumps or the world experiences "shortages" of oil. That is exactly what happened during the proposal, design and construction of the Alaska Pipeline during the 1970s.

paula   July 3rd, 2008 12:47 pm ET

Maybe he will take the 62,000 who lost their jobs in June and try and recruit them for the 100 year war to come…

Rudy NYC   July 3rd, 2008 12:46 pm ET

"Talking" about the economy, huh. I would rather hear what he plans to "actually do" about it. Most of his speeches have been declarations that things need to be fixed. Anyone paying attention knew that long time ago.

I cannot wait for the conventions to come and go so that BOTH candidates will start talking about stuff that has the potential to become actual legislation. For those who don't know that sort of stuff is decided at conventions.

Dennis   July 3rd, 2008 12:46 pm ET

McCain 2000
Obama 2008

David in Dallas   July 3rd, 2008 12:44 pm ET

Here's a brilliant idea: if lack of regulation (housing), lowering gov't income (taxes) while raising expenditures (war), and maintaining reliance on fossil fuels is what got us into this recession….

Then let's deregulate more, lower taxes more, keep the war going, and drill for more oil.

Surely we'll get different results by doing more of the same…..

Susan   July 3rd, 2008 12:42 pm ET

The only thing this man knows is war, war, and more war. What ever speeches he may give will be concocted by Phil Graham, one of the biggest reasons in this country for the mortgage mess. I have no interest in anything McBush has to say!

Suziku   July 3rd, 2008 12:42 pm ET

Maybe the Republican nominee can tell the country how his desire to stay in Iraq for years to come and the money that is necessary to run it will have a positive effect on our economy. It seems that the media is not aware of the connection!

Kelby in Houston   July 3rd, 2008 12:39 pm ET

I think there should be a show about the comments we make on these news article. I think the responses provided on the political ticker gives you a really good idea of what we think. These comments are more accurate than polls

LOL   July 3rd, 2008 12:38 pm ET

He's admitted that he doesn't know anything about the economy. The economy is the number one issue. Considering the fact that most Americans will decide who to vote for the day before the election, Obama is going to win. The Republican brand is damaged. When people wake up on election day and they have to worry about if they have enough gas in their cars to get to work that week, most sane people will never vote for another Republican after 4 years of Bush.

Has anyone seen the latest polls at Real Clear politics? Does anybody else thinks it's funny that he's leading Arizona, his own state, by less than 10 points? This is going to be so much fun!!!

DEMOCRATS '08!!!!

Robert   July 3rd, 2008 12:36 pm ET

I doubt if McCain can spell E-c-o-n-o-m-y, he readily admited that he knows very little about it. He was a key contributor in developing the mess this country is in now…unnecessary war, high oil and gas prices, high food prices and an overall lousy Economy.
Does anyone believe that he is capable of doing anything to straighten out the mess we are now in?…I don't!

Richard   July 3rd, 2008 12:35 pm ET

McCain is a free trader.. thats right he is a trader to our country for allowing jobs to be shipped overseas. I will never vote for this guy.

Rich In Seattle   July 3rd, 2008 12:31 pm ET

I hope he has Senator Graham there to help him with any tough questions (or easy questions). Remember, he isn't very strong in his understanding the economy, oh wait, he is now, Oh no he's not, oh wait he is! Oh wait, he's not. Where does he stand on this issue again?

Obama 08: Female, 60, white   July 3rd, 2008 12:29 pm ET

CNN: What about a story on how the McCain campaign and the GOP are using a loophole in McCain's own election reform legislation to funnel funds over and above the public money he will receive.

No wonder Obama went for private funding….McCain is someone who can't be trusted and is a sneaky politician who the press is not going after because he was a war hero.

Larry, Hazleton, Pa   July 3rd, 2008 12:29 pm ET

McBush will really McScrew us if we let him near the white house.I watched him lie on ABC about really understanding our economy - remeber when he told Tim Russert that he did not understand economics - now wants to say he does - maybe just a lost memory or something.

Tori, Oregon   July 3rd, 2008 12:29 pm ET

And a constitutional lawyer is an economic genuis? Get serious. At least McCain admits his weak areas. Obamits, if he's your messiah have him turn water into oil.

L   July 3rd, 2008 12:24 pm ET

Hey all you hate filled people. McCain said "i admit i'm not an expert on the economy" (i repeat, an expert, just like Obama isnt an expert). At least he is an expert on foreign policy and has spent his time as a politician doing work relating to this.

I bet you were all so upset that McCain got the glory for being in Columbia. I couldnt beleive you all thought there was some conspiracy about his timing of going. Get a life.

shane   July 3rd, 2008 12:23 pm ET

"Jobs First"? I wonder if he is going to tout so called "free-trade" like he did in Canada. If his plan is really a jobs first program he would stop these companies from firing AMerican workers and shutting plants just so they can't get access to third world labor. ANd oh yeah if he's really, really concerned about jobs he would END the occupation of Iraq so our tax dollars can stay here in OUR COUNTRY and not be used to subsidize Iraq healthcare and prisons. But what do I Know? I'm just a regular American who sees value in ending the occupation and closes overseas bases so that taxes can be slashed and more money goes back in to American Pockets.

Mike   July 3rd, 2008 12:22 pm ET

Wow! This is coming from a person who's considered the wealthiest guy in the US Senate! Who's wife's wealth is an estimated 105 million! And now he feels our pain and understands our financial problems! Especially after he is coming back from Colombia pushing more free trade! Yeah, he understands alright!

OBAMA/WEBB 2008!!!

The Surly Scholar   July 3rd, 2008 12:21 pm ET

John McCain's economic policy:

"Make more money, you little jerk."

Ian   July 3rd, 2008 12:20 pm ET

A quarter from 1964 contained about 90% silver and could buy about a gallon of gas. It took about five of those quarters to get an ounce of silver. Look at the value of an ounce of silver today and divide it by five. Ironically (sarcasm) it's about the same as a gallon of gas today. If our money were actually backed by something gas would still only be around 30 cents a gallon.

Wake up!!!

L   July 3rd, 2008 12:19 pm ET

McCain will show that not only does he have huge foreign policy experience, he also is up to date with what is needed in the economy. I dont care that he said he isnt an expert on the economy, neither candidate is (dont think a law degree qualifies Obama to be an economist, its totally different). They will both have good advisers, but if McCain has Romney close by then the election is theirs to win…

And i really dont think raising taxes on anybody in a bear market is a great idea. Those on 250K combined include a lot of small business owners who wont be able to raise salaries or hire new people. its just a crazy thing to do right now

Ian   July 3rd, 2008 12:17 pm ET

Funny coming from the same guy who said he wouldn't rely on the presidents working groups but listed all the members of that group as people he would rely on for guidance. Either the guy is a complete moron or will be just as secretive as the current administration.

Pocketbook over planet-book. There is no call for sacrifice! Not to scare, but all the scientific consensus calls for is immediate action.

McCain can neither solve the economy nor take some bold action on environmental issues.

McCain = Gritting Old Party-man

Earl   July 3rd, 2008 12:13 pm ET

If he's going to talk about the economy it will be the shortest speech he ever made..

For someone that said "I know nothing about the economy", I'm sure the BS will flow out of his mouth til he confuses himself.

By the way did you see him on the plane leaving Columbia?….Lieberman corrected him on his gaffe….he didn't even know when he talked about the prisioner release. Cindy gave him a hand too, it was BEFORE dinner.

Imagine not being able to remember something that happened 6 hours before.

And PUMA are going to vote for this absent-minded guy?…same mentality.

You people are so stupid if you think either of these candidates will wave a magic wand and fix this mess. We are guilty of helping create this mess with runaway spending, over extending our credit cards, buying a house we know we can not afford, buying Humvees, or other gas guzzlers. Put the blame where it really belongs, the government is not there to fix our every mistake…

Belle   July 3rd, 2008 12:09 pm ET

McCain will have advisers on the economy just like Obama has. Obama and McCain will BOTH increase the national debt by billions, according to BOTH of their economic plans.

Uncle Sam   July 3rd, 2008 12:08 pm ET

John McCain did not say that he did not know about economics. He simply displayed his typical humility and candor in admitting that he knew more about national security issues than economic issues. Given that, he still knows more about both than his opponent.

Is this true he is now supporting drilling in ANWR. So much for his 'green' campaign. McCon must have looked at the latest data and decided it not worth going after people who care about the environment. He rather go after the oil people who don't care about the environment and are more than happy to leave the planet a mess for the next generations to have to suffer with. Thank you McCon you are finally showing your true colors if this is true.

This should be interesting.

Ms. Sims   July 3rd, 2008 12:04 pm ET

I think he might wanna wrap up this little tour of his if he can't better shape his message. I don't think going to a town where many have lost manufacturing jobs and saying "your jobs are never coming back and NAFTA is great for the economy"….doesn't really say that he is in touch with the American people as his campaign would have you believe.

The "talk" will go something like this: "Well my friends, these are difficult times, but as I look back over the history of this great country, when I look at the sacrifices, the number of brave Americans who died for you, men and women who gave up their lives for you, service men who were captured and gave the ultimate sacrifice so you can enjoy the liberties this great nation affords, I think every single one of you Americans can get through these tough times when we think of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for you. So we will look to the future with optimism (note; gloss over details as you finish diminishing the misery of these moms, dad, and hungry kids) let's work together for a better tomorrow. A tomorrow that makes America even greater because we, my friends, are courageous Americans, just like those courageous Americans who died for you and made the ultimate sacrifice for you." Now who wants to complain about gas and food prices?

McCain: My fellow Americans, economy is something that I know a whole lot about. To start, I know how to spell it. It is e,c,o,n,o,m,y. Second, it prospers when the spending is more than the revenue. It does not prosper when consumer confidence is low but that will come back. The 'PPI' and 'CPI' are just indexes. They do not mean anything just like the polls. Last but not least, if the economy is real bad, it is the easiest thing to fix. Print more money. Some might say that increases inflation but those people don't know what they are talking about.

McCain has it right. You can trust the medical insurers to look after the public's interest and lower rates, expand coverage. They are sorry for what has happened in the past and are now willing to change.

By keeping the war going in Iraq our U.S. oil companies have had exclusive rights to all their oil and gas prices are bound to start coming down as Iraq can be viewed as our own private supply.

Good Luck John McSame as Bush. McSAME the biggest flip-flopping liar of any Candidate, Republican or Democrat, in the last 30 years.

McCain of 2000 would not even vote for John McSAME as Bush in 2008. How he has fallen!!!

Hey John, 32 of my Republican family members will be voting for Obama and against you in 2008 and we can't wait.

I look forward to seeing your 5th grade speeches on the economy. What a joke!
