The Obama family celebrated July 4 in Montana. (AP Photo)

BUTTE, Montana (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama celebrated the Fourth of July with his family in Montana.

Cheers greeted Obama, his wife, Michelle, and their two daughters as they arrived to watch the town parade. The crowd also broke into song, singing a rendition of "Happy Birthday" for Obama's oldest daughter, Malia, who turned 10 on Friday.

Obama joked that he told the birthday girl not to get caught up in all the fuss.

"All the fireworks and stuff are not just for her," he said to laughs.

After the parade, the Obamas were hosting a "family picnic" for hundreds of people — part campaign rally, part birthday party for Malia.

They also were to spend part of the afternoon sitting for interviews with such family friendly magazines as People, Essence and Parenting. Aides were seen carting Hula Hoops, coloring books and whiffle balls so the girls could be photographed while playing.

At the parade, Obama praised Montana's beauty, saying he was making a play for every state in November, including reliably Republican ones like Montana. He delivered a shorter version of his campaign speech, and asked the audience to remember those suffering amid all the Independence Day celebrations.

He shook a few hands afterward and then sat in the stands to watch the floats pass by.

Obama apologized for not walking the parade route, citing security concerns that would have required everyone to show their hands to Secret Service agents along the route. He said that might have ruined everyone's fun.

He is such a hypocrite, along with his wife. VOTE 4 John McCain. Does Obama and his wife know what the flag stands for? Probably NOT!!!
VOTE NO OBAMA!!!

true Democrat   July 4th, 2008 7:37 pm ET

This is WAAAAAY bigger than Obama or Hillary.

This is about saying NO, when a democratic candidate is treated hatefully and unfairly and disrespected.

It is about saying NO to strong-arm tactics to secure a nomination.

It is about saving the party from future corruption by tacidly approving the corruption that occurred this year.

If it costs the democrats the election in a year when a democrat CAN'T lose, then the new democrats will think twice before they try to sway, influence and coerce the vote to their candidate by using division, hate and race baiting.

Dirty tactics deserve to back fire.

Sorry for the young women if Roe vs Wade gets overturned… Us bigoted, racist, stupid old women secured that right for you. Now we will turn the fight over to you. I would not recommend using insults and denigration to win your point in the future.

Sorry to the young men who might be drafted- again maybe it will show you the price of hatred (Bro over Ho), and (redneck inbred cousins who are nothing but dirty trailor trash morons). Maybe serving your country will teach you some respect for others who disagree with you.

I marched for civil rights, against the vietnam war, for women's rights, i burned my bra in NYC and I marched against the Iraq war.

Old and racist and stupid and ignorant as I am- I will march against the hatred and bigotry that has infiltrated the once democratic party.

Yes they are a good looking family but so are other families. Of course they don't have the worries of most families. Gas prices, food prices, utilities, how to pay for the mortgage and they got a break on their mortgage. It's all about the votes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He needs to go back to his day job and get some experience.

Obama: "Sponge Bob represents a change for the typical kind of vice presidents this country has had in the past. And in a poll of polls we found that our supporters, who get their news from South Park, Saturday Night Live and the Cartoon Network, related well to Sponge Bob's message of hope."

Sounds good to me Mark. Actually, our future Presidents name is spelled B A R A C K!! That will be President Obama to YOU! BTW, I'm almost 49 years old and think Sponge Bob would be a much better VP than Hillary. My kids love all of those shows as do I. Young at heart and full of hope, I am, I am.

Let ask this question was it very American for Cindy McCain to spend $750,000.00 on her charge cards last month when the average American can't pay the high price on gas, food and loosing their homes. How can McCain know what we feel when his owm wife has no shame.

I would MUCH rather Obama refine his stance on the Iraq war and listen to our generals.

Do you understand how we got into this mess? GW and his cronies started this war and waged it in a manner that was completely against the advice of our generals. Go ahead, do some research.

So, I think Obama's understanding that you have to listen our generals is very wise, more wise than making campaign promises he can't keep.

Give me a break — for all those nitwits who think he'd make a good president — Obama may be a lawyer on paper but he has never practiced "law' — he'd have a hard time arguing a case in any open court — because he'd lose and he knows it. That's why he won't debate McCain on television in a town hall meeting. He's just another 8×10 color glossy. What makes me sick are people who actually think he'd make a good "commander and chief" of our armed forces. Wake up and smell the coffee. Our armed forces deserve the best — and he's not "it" — not even close. Maybe he should try enlisting in a branch of the armed forces. That would be a real measure of the man he thinks he is.

I read all the these blogs and some of the blogs I have never read so much hatred, jealously, bigotry for one person. You people who writes with some much hatred need JESUS(GOD) in your life. Yes everyone has an opinion but why have a opinion with some much hatred, jealously, vindictiveness in your hearts. Why are you afraid of this man? We are all Americans we all built this country and have a right to run for any office in this country and we as Americans have a right to vote for whomever you chose too. Some of you say because he has no experience well I have live to see so many politician with experience run for office and win and have created wars for no reason for political gain and have so many lives of men and women murdered because of greed in a senseless war, many people facing foreclosure and homeless. Veterans can't get the medical treatment they need. Gas is so high you can't afford to work. Well I tell you what if you happy the way America is and where it stands then vote for McCain or don't vote at all that your American right. So don't hate someone whom you say don't have enough experience or lack of or is that the true problem? Don't hate on someone who says they wants to bring our men and women home and stop financing Iraq . Apparently you haters never had someone died in war, not homeless, not facing foreclosure, don't have a gas prices issue and financially stable.
We need a change and we need it now!!!

Obama Hussein is out to help himself and he will hurt this country.
If he is elected, remember this message……….
He should do the right thing and reject the nomination..if it is offered.
If you think Bush hurt America, you ain't seen nothing yet.

Shawn (Lexington, KY)   July 4th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Eam: Don't be a reckless idiot. Obama's stance on Iraq has never changed, as he wants to get out of there. What is changing, or could, is the method at which he gets our troops out. There's NO harm in listening to the advice of the people on the ground on how to best execute that, rather than going gung-ho and just yanking our troops out of there carelessly without listening to anyone (i.e. how Bush has run his administration).

BC FOR OBAMA   July 4th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Gorgeous Family! Everyone seems to forget that Obama is now in the game, therfore he has to play it and sometimes you have to alter the game plan and take what the defense gives you in order to win. Winning is the only way he will be in position to carry out his campaign philosophies and if his fans are going to boo him for every play that he makes then they're not real fans, they're just band wagon supporters because his real fans knows that any great coach has to adjust his game plan during the game to be successful. If he has to please every fan on every play, it will be a lost cause.

4 THE CONSTITUTION   July 4th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

I love this country but not what is happening to it. War for oil is not pro-life. I love my country and I don't say the flag salute. "…under God, with liberty and justice for all" I think it is sacreligious. I care enough to want to stand for the constitution-not what is becoming a facist/corporate state. God bless America. I want our country back. I'd die for it but not for a corporate agenda and killing innocent people for profit and addiction to power. The days of "love it or leave it" are over. Love it and reclaim the good and change what is not for the better.

Obama has a nice family but he is not fit to be President.

New York Times editorial board is finally waking up.
Referred to Obama as "New but not Improved."

The Times also questioned his slogan of 'change."

LA Times also ripped on Obama.

For those of you who think Obama will magically make your life better and make gas 99 cents again–guess again.

Obama is very ambitious and power-hungry. But it's for his ego and not to help the average American. He is pandering for votes everywhere he goes.

He is not qualified and his views change with the wind. He DOESN'T know what he is doing.

Phantom of the Oprah   July 4th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

With regards to flip-flopping on Iraq:
Its because the language he used in the morning speech was very reminiscent of Hillary's position in the primary (which Obama tore into her for).

When he was the underdog he promised to run a publicly financed campaign. Now that he is the heavyweight he changes his mind claiming he needs the 1/4 billion to fight republican pac's and 527's (even though democratic pac's and 527's outspend the republicans by 10 to 1).

He blasted NAFTA as the scourge of the midwest but now its not so bad.

He claims to not take money from lobbyists but takes regular max donations from their spouses. (Last count I saw McCain Lobbyist money was approx 650k Obama 425k).

Also someone commented on McCain's travel. You do realize he is the chairman and highest ranking member on the armed forces committee. So you want to blast McCain for doing his job but its OK that Obama has done nothing as the head of a committee for our policies in Afghanistan. Columbia and Mexico are important allies.

But what would I know, Im just an intelligent, socially liberal, fiscally conservative voter that actually reads.

And I voted for the BEST candidate, Hillary Clinton.

I will now vote AGAINST the WORST candidate- the installed, Obama.

Darla (Edmonton, Canada)   July 4th, 2008 3:44 pm ET

What is the obsession of Americans with their flag? Loyalty to one's country and the demonstration of one's patriotism is more than wearing a flag pin … holding a flag on a national holiday … or flying it in front one's home. It is through words and ethical actions that one demonstrates the depth of their loyalty and patriotism.

I am a loyal and patriotic naturalized Canadian (who was born in Idaho). I don't have to have the Canadian flag, a maple leaf, a hockey stick or a beaver in my face all the time to remind me of faith, loyalty and patriotism to Queen and country.

DMAC in ID   July 4th, 2008 3:44 pm ET

For each of you saying Obama hasn't changed his position I ask you to remember how he mocked Hillary. Obama said her Iraq position of having a measured safe withdraw by not committing to a specific timeline was wrong. Seems he now is saying Hillary was right, and he was wrong. Face it folks you were blinded by his rock star show ignoring his inexperience and his past relationships. Each of you kept giving him the benefit of the doubt, just like so many did for Bush and look where that got us.

Barack and Michelle have a beautiful family. Happy Birthday Malia. Next year you will celebrate your birthday in the Whitehouse. It is so good to see Barack and Michelle celebrating the 4th of July on the campaign trail.

McCain has been in so many countries you have to wonder what country he is running for in!! Well you can tell it is the week-end he is at home. We have a part-time campaigner. I guess he is running to be a part time President! He has to rest every week-end when he is in the USA. I guess Joe will run the country the rest of the time!

Barack Obama is going to be one of our greatest Presidents' ever. He is going to turn this nation around.

Marie Canada   July 4th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

Your American style politics is really weird compared to how our politicians conduct their campaigns here in Canada.

When our politicians are running for election they campaign for votes within Canada.

How come one of your candidates (McCain) campaigns in different countries and for the most part ignoring the U.S. voters while his opponent (Obama) only campaigns in his own country ignoring the people in the other countries?

If someone can rationally explain this I would be truly amazed.

The president should not be dictating to the military as is done under GW Bush and what Mc Cain wants to continue. The president sets the mission and the hard working men and women with decades of experience design build and carry it out. Why haven't we seen any of this with John McCain? Why aren't his older children backing him?
I haven't seen one picture of him with his family and I've not seen a picture yet, although I may have missed it, of him even holding his wife's hand. He doesn't even hold her hand while coming down the steep jet steps.
He seems arrogant, cold and void of affection. Leaves me with a chill.
Why isn't he showing some patriotism over this holiday and in this country? If Obama had shut himself up with his family over this holiday Senator McCain and his group would have been all over him. Where's Obama's Patriotism????

It is because of people like you that he has to prove his patriotism with little things as a flag pin, because you don't understand that someone who is ready to give his best to improve his country is a true patriot. When the opposition starts attacking their opponent's patriotism, it's a sure sign that they're trying to deflect the discussion away from something meaningful.

You know, just after 9/11, I had a flag on my car. But then you started to see people co-opt the flag for their own political purposes, and frankly, it denigrated the flag.

So I took it off my car, much as Senator Obama took it off his coat. I wanted no part of such a shameful use of our country's flag.

Today, we see the Republican's once again wrapping themselves in the flag.

Shame on you all!

He blames McCian's camp for the confusion in what he said or was it that you (as always) just say yes to everything. i have some bad news for Obama-nazi he does not have a clue as to what waits for him, he is under the impression that he has unlimited power just like his mentor BUSH. why won't he tell us what he wants to do, you know why he isn't capable of doing so.

The Wild West is turning Blue. Barack should seriously consider Sen. Test of Montana for his VP. Tester is the type of centrist that would really help solidify the ticket and is very popular with moderates/independents.

Now he makes sure he is holding an American flag for all to see. Why do you keep having to prove your patriotism? Next he'll walk on stage drapped in an American flag. Sorry, but this issue isn't going away and shouldn't.
