President Bush celebrated his birthday on Air Force One with first lady Laura Bush and White House staff members.

HOKKAIDO, Japan (CNN) – It was a birthday celebration in the skies, as President Bush turned 62 aboard Air Force One while en route to Japan where Bush is attending the summit of the Group of Eight industrialized nations.

First Lady Laura Bush and White House staff members gathered in the conference room on Air Force One late Saturday night eastern time, where a steward dimmed the lights as the crowd waited for the birthday celebrant to arrive, White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said.

On the table was a "large" coconut cake with a single burning candle and the words "Happy Birthday President Bush" on it.

The crowd called out "surprise" as President Bush walked into the room and then sang Happy Birthday, Perino said.

Bush "dutifully pretended to be surprised" and blew out the candle, Perino said. It was not known whether he made a birthday wish.

After cutting and serving the cake, the health-conscious president ate a "small" piece of birthday cake, she said.

There was no word on what he gifts he received from family members, but Perino noted the president was sporting a new teal-colored tie.

White House staffers presented Bush with birthday notes and cards — well-wishes delivered in a small wooden box with his initials carved on top.

The box was carved by a Texas woodworker with wood from an old Scarlett Oak tree that grace the north lawn of the White House until it fell last year.

The tree was planted in 1892 by the great granddaughter of President Benjamin Harrison, according to Perino.

Happy Birthday President Bush! I would like to send him a check for $37.

$37 the year he took office is about equal to $62 in today's rapidly devaluing dollar.

Thank you for being a big part of why the entire country has effectively been taxed about 40% on everything they own and all of their savings through dollar devaluation during the president's time as Fiscal Ultra-Liberal-in-Chief.

DJ   July 7th, 2008 9:58 am ET

"It was not known whether he made a birthday wish." That's funny. If I were him, I'd be wishing for January to come just as soon as possible.

DMAC in ID   July 7th, 2008 9:55 am ET

Doesn't seem like he has mellowed with age. Still the bull headed do it my way and to H— with you, Pres. So sad that at his age he still can't see the forest for the trees.
Hope he had his kind of day to celebrate.

Joe said: "We are in the war, gas goes up $4.00… We have to work till 70s to get our retirement?. All because of Bush. I do not think he knows people do not like him as our president."

I find it amazing how small minded people blame Bush for $4 gas. They have absolutely no concept of what is really going on. They just believe all the sound bites from the media. I can't wait to see what Obama does (or doesn't do) if he gets in. Not a thing, I can tell you that right now. You all remember that when it goes up to 5 - 6 dollars a gallon if he gets in. and again, it's bush's fault you have to work til you are 70? Not hardly. YOU my friend, just didn't prepare good enoguh for your retirement. I'll be retiring at 62 because I did my homework and knew what to do in order to retire faily young AND have enough money to live off of comfortably.

RJ, CA   July 7th, 2008 9:52 am ET

Bush failed because he didn't have enough government experience and because he is arrogant and elitist. He ran on "change" both times, primarily with the support of the ultra conservative religious right. Obama is cut from the same cloth, just different party, also arrogant and elitist, also running on "change," this time with the support of the race-baiting ultra liberal left. Neither Bush nor Obama knew/know how Washington works. Only Hillary and McCain are centrists without a wacky "ultra" label. Both know how Washington works — and whether you like it or not, that's what counts from day one.

Frank   July 7th, 2008 9:52 am ET

We have been lied to and are now suffering from years of big government, runaway inflation, endless war, loss of civil liberty, and the consequences of these failed policies which are reflected in our depressed economy. Happy Birthday indeed.

Gas was $1.46 when he took office and there were tens of thousands of people on this planet who are not alive anymore because of the decisions this man made.

'Celebrating' the birth of this man is beyond absurd.

Bruce   July 7th, 2008 9:49 am ET

Sorry Will, but it wasn't Bush's fault for the Social Security system not b eing overhauled. Put the blame directily where it should, on the Senate and Congress.

I wonder how many burial of dead soldiers in Iraq he could have gone to or their graves to honor them for his push to the war that have cost them their lives. I am amazed hes the only US President i know of that is having high flying birthdays when troops are being killed by the false lies that led them to their deaths and injuries.

For all those dead troops who have served their country with honor and wont have a day to celebrate birthday with their children and love ones, may God bless your family and let your birthdays be of joy that you fought for a country you love and not of sadness that you are gone.

Even CNN can push for the truth about the invasion, but have ample time to publish this article…may the blood be on everyone that drum the bells for War.

John Thomas   July 7th, 2008 9:47 am ET

Although I'd like to quip that he probably cried for not getting something at some point, cheap shots at him are kind of like kicking a blind person. Cheney's been the president. Bush is kind of like his agent, press secretary, and puppet wrapped in one package.

To K who said:
"As a millionaire with tons of stock in oil I think Bush is doing a fine job as President, anyone who has anything bad to say about him is a traitor to America and is just jealous they arent rich

God Bless President Bush and make sure to vote for John McCain in November"

I am not a millionaire, and I admit to being envious of people who do not have financial concerns at this present moment. But it is a healthy envy that goes away. I have a family to support, and I do what I can, and make a salary that would have afforded some comfort 8 years ago.

What does not go away is my horror and disgust at the possibility that there are people that really feel, think and act the way you do. That kind of thinking is a childish and short-sighted as it gets.

But in honor of the birthday of this childish and short-sighted administration's leader, I'll indulge. Judgements are a 2 way street - as for you or anyone who as a good thing to say about Bush, you are probably the product of nepotism, inheritance, or extreme insecurity over how your material possessions affect your perception of yourself and others perception of you. If you did not have what you had, you literally and figuratively would be nothing, and would think of yourself as nothing. There's a good chance you have small equipment as well.

ARB   July 7th, 2008 9:45 am ET

Enough with all the bashing of President Bush….the american people have nobody to blame but themselves…..we got him elected into office so now we get to suffer the consequences…..if you people wanna be pissed off at someone look in the mirror.

You know very well that I am not as bad as people have made me out to be and most definitely not as evil as people think I am. So please put in peoples hearts to not think of me that way and not confuse me with Cheney and Rummy. You know they are bad and evil but not me my dear lord. Amen.

Happy B'Day and God Bless you dear President.

David, Silver Spring, MD   July 7th, 2008 9:28 am ET

I'd send him a present except that I was laid off when my job was shipped to China, had my house foreclosed, can't afford the gas to go shopping, have huge medical bills because I lost my medical insurance when my employer shipped my job overseas, and I can barely afford to send my kid to college.

But I hope he has a terrific birthday. Maybe he could hire me to clean up after he's done. Maybe I could sneak out a slice of cake for my kids.

Yippee.

Kevin @ Maryland   July 7th, 2008 9:14 am ET

For all those who believe that we should go easy on President Bush let I remind you of a few "intelligent" quotes that our good president is responsible for saying.

"Most imports are from outside of the country."

“Well, I think if you say you're going to do something and don't do it, that's trustworthiness.”

"There's an old saying in Tennessee - I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee…that says, fool me once, shame on…shame on you. Fool me…you can't get fooled again.”

“It is clear our nation is reliant upon big foreign oil. More and more of our imports come from overseas.”

(Does he know that the word import means to bring in?)

“It's exciting; I don't know whether I'm going to win or not. I think I am. I do know I'm ready for the job. And, if not, that's just the way it goes.”

“I think we ought to raise the age at which juveniles can have a gun.”

“It's clearly a budget. It's got a lot of numbers in it.”

This is just a few. My personal favorite being the Texas/Tennessee one. If you are going to wish President Bush a happy birthday at least do it right. President Bush congratulations on reaching the monumental age of 62 on air force one. There will be a part of me that is sad to see you leave the office, mainly because comedy central will not have any more George Bush material :(

I guess 30% of the people, wish him well. I don't wish him ill, I just wished he had lost the election in 2000. I still don't know how he won in 2004. It will be more puzzling when Obama loses in November. The year that should have been a blowout for Democrats, is not looking too good at this point in time. We had 7 plus years of promised change, and it is all that is left in our pockets. We don't need empty promises and nice speaches, we need solutions. I cannot understand why this race is still too close to call. Could it be, the people are now seeing the real Obama? I will write Hillary on my ballot in November, I will not stay home. I have always voted, and this year is no exception.

Give us the present of your absence REAL soon and take your trained barking seals in this blog with you, "Mr. President"..Gawd, gotta go wash my mouth out with Listerine now..

Happy Birthday, Mr. Bush. I did not vote for you in either election. I respect you as a human being. Many people are blaming you for the economy, high gas prices, and an unpopulare war. I do not blame you. I realize that as with any problem in life, their are many factors that contribute to that problem. The important thing is to be able to elucidate the solutions to a particular problem. And more importantly, one must have faith that the problem will be resolved in due time. I thank you for your role as President and wish you and your family well in your post-presidential years. God Bless you.

President Bush had the toughest job that any President had ever had to do. If Clinton had been there, we would have angered our enemies even more. If anyone other than Bush was there, we would have been worse off. Say what you will about Bush, he did exactly what i would have done, under the extreme situation that was handed to him. He was given a crap plate full of al Quaeda and other enemies which The Clintons did not deal with.
Good job President Bush, you have shown much character, even when you have losers putting you down for what you believe in.

You may not be the best president, or have the best policies, but you do work hard. Even on your birthday, you take no time to rest and have a lavish party. You have one on the way to a meeting, in a conference room, with a small piece of cake. You always care about your health, and you are a hardworking, consistent person. You may not be the role model President, but you are a role model American citizen. Thank you and Happy Birthday!!!!

Tony   July 7th, 2008 8:34 am ET

Us baby boomers will never know what retirement is since we will be working, for as long as we live. There's is no bright future in sight, and far worst for the next generation to come. Come one people at least be decent. Our president did celebrate his birthday and by being petty, partisan, shows exactly your mindset. People love to bash Bush but he has kept us safe with no more attacks on the US soil.

Unfortunately for the liberals, Bush will go down in history as a good President in the way he handled some tough problems (the economy, terrorism, etc.).

Obama is already moving towards some of Bushes policies, with Faith based money for the needy, staying in Iraq until the job gets completed (backing away from his pull the troops out in 16 months), softening his stance on abortion, etc.

You far lefties are going to have to put up with Obama's move to the center if he has any chance of winning in November.

can't we just stop talking about the shrub? he is inconsequential, has always been and will always be…well maybe not always been, i mean we are seeing the worst economy in decades, an endless and endlessly expensive war, the worst decline in the heart of our constitution since the macarthy era (and likely much worse), a couple of supreme court justices who seem like they got their legal degress from barbazon…well, maybe inconsequential is the wrong word…let's try…..

he is an abomination….it's sad that i sit and hope that this is the last birthday i will ever hear about the "shrub" celebrating…very sad….

NW   July 6th, 2008 8:47 pm ET

Yo my friend Mr. President, Happy Birthday to you and yours! Hope you give us a break too on where we are at this time. You probably had a middle good time I don't think you would have a full blown excellent birthday but at least you had one and the last one too. Because who knows where you gonna be after getting out of office. Good lick my fwen.

Happy birthday Doubya. I got a surprise for you, "Chang we can believe in" Hope and Yes we can.

Mildred

If your kids were in Iraq as mine are, you wouldn't be thanking him for keeping America safe - members of the armed forces are citizens also, and he sacrificed 4100 of them so far, for what? People like you with no blood investment, but "patriotism" without substance make me sick.

mike   July 6th, 2008 8:40 pm ET

The Secret Service removes hecklers during his speech on the 4th? Since when is the Secret Service a politically interested organization? The people of America should be very concerned about this issue.

Are those that wish this SOB/AH from the same planet? "We pray you'll make the right decision". I won't start in on the ignorance of prayer, but have these people seen the country recently?

Your devotion to such a horrible person is stupid. YOU. ARE. STUPID.

Being kind to someone who has sunk our country into debt, war, a near-abolished Constitution, archaic ideology on life-saving research, etc, etc should be considered treason. Support for bush is treason. He has committed high crimes and misdemeanors against this Nation. Spat on the Constitution. And Pissed on the People of the United States. Too bad he wasn't aborted.

You were compleatly disconnected from the reality, and waged a war with Iraq, which allowed Iran to dominate the Iraqi landscape. Our country is more important than any political party, and I'm all for NOT changing what our country was founded on.

So, If Obama tells you he wants change, Tell him you don't have any!!!

fred   July 6th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

Happy Birthday President Bush!!! WOW, finally a report about Bush that is a positive one. Thank you CNN.

Here's my 4 reasons why Bush was a great president.

Liberated Afghanistan. (a new ally of the U.S)
Liberated Iraq (a new ally of the U.S)

Appointed 2 great supreme court Judges in John Roberts and Samuel Alito.

To all of those of you who hate Bush and think he will go down as America's worst president…………………..just wait. Once Iraq is a successful democracy, Bush will go down in history as one of America's better presidents. And I know all the liberals want our military to lose more members in Iraq just so they can complain some more. Well, I can't speak for other people, but I hope that our military comes out victorious in Iraq, and that the Iraqi people finally have a free democracy to live in. That is what I hope for. If only all of congress would get behind our military, things would be so much better.

Stac   July 6th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

Yea, he is the worst president ever and has ruined our country. No doubt about that! But, he is human and a Christian. So I will let his disater ways go…..God will forgive him, no reason I shouldn't.

I don't care what the polls say, Americans have a LOT to thank you for, Sir…a resilient economy despite having inherited a dot com crash thru no fault of your own; a war that we are WINNING; unwavering defense for the innocent unborn; and no sexual scandals in the White House for 8 years.

History will be a better judge of your presidency, Mr. Bush, than the prevailing winds of popular sentiment. Thanks for being our leader!

God bless President Bush! Our last president took this nation into the sewer. " Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people." (Proverbs 14:34) Many like to make Pres. Bush the scapegoat for all the ills of America. He isn't perfect, and we aren't either. I believe his actions have kept more 9-11 tragedies from happening. No one likes war, (my son is in Iraq,) but I prefer the war is somewhere other than our shores. Happy Birthday, President Bush. May God bless our nation because of your strong leadership.

Larry - Hazleton, pa   July 6th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

He is so disconnected from what is really going on - if he had any appreciation for he has done to our country he would give us a birhtday present and resign. He should have been impeached for what he has done. I doubt seriously if even he knows what the people of the country actually think of him.

Joe   July 6th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

We are in the war, gas goes up $4.00… We have to work till 70s to get our retirement?. All because of Bush. I do not think he knows people do not like him as our president.

Mr. President, Happy Birthday. You have been great and you have never wavered. Look at Obama. He is now thinking of refining his policy for iraq. He is a fliflopper. We cannot forget such cheap candidate from Democrats. He has Jeremiah Wright to support him. He has a long way to learn something. With just 1-2 years in senate without any accomplishments, do you qualify to be our president. Carmen fropm Colorado is saying who cares? I care for my country and I cannot see Obama to become our president. He is a zero.

Who's policies have kept Al Qaeda out of the U.S. for the past seven years? Pick one:

a) Barack Hussein Obama

b) George Bush

Want to CHANGE that?

Dimitri   July 6th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

In 2000, we weren't in great shape because of the Net bubble bursting, but we were doing OK. Now, in 2008, our country is in the toilet according to every category and indicator available: unemployment is soaring, the Dow is sinking, the war drags on, gas is through the roof, and most importantly, the average American is more depressed about our nation's shape than in a long time.

To the people posting here, talking up Bush's performance and thanking him for a "scandal-free administration" (yeah right)…. exactly what cave in Afghanistan did you just crawl out of?

Monique Manna   July 6th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Let's see what he is doing when he turns "64″

Do you think though now that he is 62 and he will be "retiring" soon that he will be able to get partial social security? Or will he opt to wait until he is 65 to get full benefits? Will there be benefits when he is 65? Golly, lots of questions! Here's another one. I have been paying into Social Security since I started working (16) - I am 42 years old now. Do you think by the time I am ready to collect what is due me there will be any left? If there isn't anything left in the SS Fund, what happened to all my money?

Would I be able to take the Unted States Government to Court and demand that all I put into my retirement fund through our Great Governemt (which I had no choice but to do) be given back to me? After all, I am entitled to it - that's what I was told.

People are responsible for "false advertisement" shouldn't the government be too?

Kevin   July 6th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Bush celebrates his birthday by spewing CO2 all over Japan, a country with a stronger economic system then the US and still has 1/10 of the emissions that the US has.

How appropriate…long live fossil fuels say BUSH

Think BEFORE you ask for change.

Happy birthday to President Bush. Thank you for not only respecting the office of the President of the United States but for extending respect to past occupants of the White House, and always speaking respectfully to others even when they don't speak respectfully to you. May you live to be 120 and see your great-grandchildren. You and Laura are excellent examples of good parents…and leaders.
Too bad so many people have allowed themselves to be filled with hatred for you. No one except ourselves can put hatred or anything else into our hearts. No one can blame you for that!
