Bush gets high-flying birthday party

President Bush celebrated his birthday on Air Force One with first lady Laura Bush and White House staff members.

President Bush celebrated his birthday on Air Force One with first lady Laura Bush and White House staff members.

HOKKAIDO, Japan (CNN) - It was a birthday celebration in the skies, as President Bush turned 62 aboard Air Force One while en route to Japan where Bush is attending the summit of the Group of Eight industrialized nations.

First Lady Laura Bush and White House staff members gathered in the conference room on Air Force One late Saturday night eastern time, where a steward dimmed the lights as the crowd waited for the birthday celebrant to arrive, White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said.

On the table was a "large" coconut cake with a single burning candle and the words "Happy Birthday President Bush" on it.

The crowd called out "surprise" as President Bush walked into the room and then sang Happy Birthday, Perino said.

Bush "dutifully pretended to be surprised" and blew out the candle, Perino said. It was not known whether he made a birthday wish.

After cutting and serving the cake, the health-conscious president ate a "small" piece of birthday cake, she said.

There was no word on what he gifts he received from family members, but Perino noted the president was sporting a new teal-colored tie.

White House staffers presented Bush with birthday notes and cards - well-wishes delivered in a small wooden box with his initials carved on top.

The box was carved by a Texas woodworker with wood from an old Scarlett Oak tree that grace the north lawn of the White House until it fell last year.

The tree was planted in 1892 by the great granddaughter of President Benjamin Harrison, according to Perino.

Bush guy set up 9/11 but with the goal of intercepting the planes and being hailed as a hero; but the participants had their own secondary plan to actually crash the planes. They double crossed Bush! All because he wanted to be spared the shame of being a 1-term president like his father. Shame. "War on Terror" is a fake shame!

I can't help but think of the many who won't be celebrating birthdays ever again, because of you.

So happy to share the same birthday as you, President Bush - especially since you're a president who believes that every human life, unborn as well as born, deserves the chance to see the light of day and to live. GOD BLESS YOU!

Nice that he is spending his birthday in Japan rather than in the field with our troops either in Iraq or Afghanistan. Some of the posts on here amaze me about how wonderful a president he is, safer against terrorists, removing an evil dictator, etc. I'm too busy trying to figure out how I'm going to pay my bills rather than thinking about how secure Bush has made the world. They need to pull their non thinking heads out of the holes they've stuck them in or just got ahead and fall on in.

Because of George Bush, tens of thousands of people all over the world will not be celebrating a birthday. I hope the 'health conscious' president lives long enough to fully realize the magnitude of his errors.

Now that Bush is 62 he can apply for social security, the system he promised yet failed to overhaul. A future example of Bush being a part of the problem and not the solution.

Before he leaves office, George Bush will "stick it" to the American public who have handed him one of the lowest approval ratings this country has seen. Paying 4 1/2 dollars a gallon for gas? George Bush sticking it to the American people. Wait and see, before he leaves he will start a war with Iran, sticking it to all of us and the wimp Congress will just roll over and play dead.

President Bush wastes more fuel to celebrate his birthday on Air Force One than most of us will use in a year. Meanwhile, most Americans can't afford $4 a gallon gas to see our families during this 4th of July weekend.

    To Janey/Michigan:

What alternate universe are you living in?

Item: Through most of Bush's reign we have had a rubber stamp Republican congress that did exactly what King George asked them to do. So whatever you think congress did wrong, that Bush is getting blamed for, odds are it was exactly what Bush wanted. Even now, with a dem congress, we have a large enough minority of Republicans in the Senate so it's still impossible for the congress to do much of anything unless its what Bush and the republicants want.

Item: What safety from terrorism? Report after report shows that Al Queda is reconstituted as strong as ever, while homeland security is a joke that serves only to inconvenience airline travelers without actually protecting them.

Item: Sure, we got rid of "a brutal murderous dicatator" but at what cost? By diverting attention from where the real problem was, in Afghanistan, we let the Taliban come back strong, while degrading our own military strength and strenthining Iran's hand in the Middle East. This is not something to be happy about.

Item: "Respect fot eh right or religious groups to practice their religion" Huh? You mean in the US? Since when has that been a problem?

I cant wait til he is not traveling on our ticket any more. No more Bush administration policies. No more G.W. Bush...No more Chaney. They put us back a couple decades...Now it is time for a democrate to bring us back to being a positive role model to the world. Bring balance. God bless America. Home of the free. Regardless of what party you may belong to we are a proud poeple and unite when the going gets tough.

he should be shame. he is publicly celebrating his birthday, while his soldiers in iraq can't share or celebrate the birthdays of their children due to his war. he should really be careful of what he says and does. he looks very detached from reality and waving thank you's from a plane on his birthday looks rather elitist to me. give me a break. mr. not much of a president.
